Zee Theatre's Gunehgaar is a must-watch, psychological thriller

Gunehgaar, a teleplay that is high on suspense and intrigue

Akarsh khurana weaves together a tale of crime and retribution in his latest teleplay gunehgaar.

Directing a teleplay can be challenging. However, having directed quite a few of them already, filmmaker and theatre practitioner Akarsh Khurana believes he has now found freedom and flexibility within its challenging format.

Initially, Khurana was attracted to the format for its hybrid quality. “Traditionally, plays are shot in a very boring manner. There is just a regular camera set-up while the play was being performed. The level of engagement is a little distant,” he shares. Khurana has taken it upon himself to elevate the format to make it more engaging for the audience. “I have worked with the camera and I have worked on stage. So, it is about marrying these two,” he adds.

His latest teleplay Gunehgaar is a suspenseful drama that explores the themes of crime and retribution. With an interesting cast including Gajraj Rao, Sumeet Vyas and Shweta Basu Prasad, the plot reveals how an event buried in the past impacts the present and future of three intertwined lives.

Although he has delved into some aspects of the genre in his earlier works, it is for the first time that the director is attempting a full-fledged suspense drama. Khurana recalls an incident from when he was shooting sequences for the web series Jugaadistan , when someone remarked that he should be doing more of the suspense genre, since he seemed to be enjoying it so much. “When Zee Theatre approached me to make something in this space, I told them I would love to,” he adds.

Directing a teleplay in this genre has come with its own set of challenges, Khurana reveals. “You are putting a limited number of characters in one room. It’s not like a suspense movie where you can build up the tension with visuals. Here, it is all about conversation,” he explains. Keeping the dialogues fast-paced and unravelling some new piece of information every few minutes is the trick, he shares.

He had to look for a cast that would be able to hold the audience’s attention with their performances. Khurana has been keen to work with Rao for some time now and this gave him the perfect opportunity to cast him as Mr Bansal, a dubious man who invites journalist Mrinalini (Basu Prasad) to his flat on the pretext of discussing an important matter. As for Basu Prasad, her name kept coming up in meetings and having heard good things about her work, the director cast her as the female lead. Vyas and Khurana , on the other hand, go a long way back, having worked together in various films and web series.

It’s the first time that Vyas has done a teleplay. “Ever since Akarsh started making films and I got busy doing series and films, he stopped casting me in plays. I have been pestering him for a while now to do so. Gunehgaar gave us the perfect opportunity,” he says.

Khurana also feels that people living away from the metros might not always have access to live theatre. Teleplays give them the opportunity to watch a play from wherever they are. "The long term outcome I hope for is that people get drawn to theatre. These things are symbiotic. One may lead to another,” he says.

Zee Theatre’s Gunehgaar will be aired on Tata Play Theatre on 24 September and on Airtel Spotlight, DishTV and D2H Rangmanch on 25 September

Handsome hero Siddharth is now back with a film named Takkar. Divyansha Kaushik played the female lead, and the film is directed by Karthik G Krish. The film hit the screens today and let’s see how it is.

Distressed by the poor economic status of his family, Gunasekhar (Siddharth) decides to make it big in life. He goes to Vizag and starts doing petty jobs but faces bullying wherever he works. When life offers him a chance to become rich, Gunasekhar decides to grab it despite the unlawful nature of the work. But he fails to do it and lands in problems. What did Gunasekhar do next? How did the entry of Lucky (Divyansha Kaushik), a rich girl, into Gunasekhar’s life change his fate? This forms part of the crux of the story.

Plus Points:

The movie starts on an interesting note, with Siddharth trying to commit suicide. Then the flashback portion begins, and it establishes the role of the protagonist neatly. Scenes featuring workplace bullying have come quite well, and they help us connect with Siddharth’s character. Hence the wrong path he chooses to earn big seems justifiable.

Siddharth carries the film all the way on his shoulders. He is seen throughout the movie, and the actor gives a sincere performance as a youngster who wants to get rid of poverty. His comedy timing is neat, and the actor still has that charm in him. Divyansha is okay in her role that focuses more on skin show. A couple of action set pieces and a few comedy scenes offer the respite.

Minus Points:

It is surprising what made the talented cast choose this script which doesn’t have enough meat. Neither the film has a good love track nor any thrilling moments. Siddharth and other actors try hard to infuse life in this lifeless action thriller, but ultimately they can’t save this ship from sinking.

As there is hardly any story in Takkar, it is important that the narrative must be highly engaging to hook the audience. Unfortunately, the storytelling is even weaker and is sure to test the patience levels big time. In order to keep the proceedings going, the director adds comedy portions involving Yogi Babu and Munishkanth. The entire episode in the first half featuring Yogi Babu is irritating and unbearable. The bad dubbing for Yogi Babu adds to the woes.

A couple of comedy scenes are okay, but the rest of the fun portions are pretty annoying. The first half was a bit bearable, but the entire second half was a complete mess with many boring scenes. Abhimanyu Singh is absolutely wasted in a poorly written role. The length of the film is one more drawback, as close to fifteen minutes should have been chopped off.

Technical Aspects:

Nivas K Prasanna’s songs are forgettable, and the background score, too, doesn’t help the film. The cinematography by Murugesan is decent. The production values are okay. The editing is below-par as the movie is dragged out for no reason. The VFX works are substandard, especially in the chase sequences.

Coming to the writer-director, Karthik G Krish, he did a poor job with Takkar. He gets it wrong completely with the story and screenplay, and hence even the skillful actors couldn’t do much. The movie is filled with many boring and dull scenes, which just add to the length. Had the director concentrated on the storytelling, the film could have at least been a watchable fare.

On the whole, Takkar is a forgettable outing that barely has any engaging moments. The weak plot and the dull narrative tests the patience levels big time. Siddharth performs well, and there are a couple of good action set pieces. But apart from that, the movie is a disappointing fare. You can skip it.

కరోనా తర్వాత సీనీ ప్రేక్షకుల్లో మార్పు వచ్చింది. ఒకప్పుడు స్టార్‌ హీరోహీరోయిన్లు ఉంటే చాలు.. ఆ సినిమాను ఆదరించేవారు. కాని ఇప్పుడు హీరో హీరోయిన్లను కాకుండా కంటెంట్‌ ఉన్న  సినిమాలను ఆదరిస్తున్నారు.  కథలో కొత్తదనం ఉంటే చాలు.. చిన్న పెద్ద సినిమా అని చూడకుండా థియేటర్స్‌కి వెళ్తున్నారు. అందుకే ఈ మధ్య కాలంలో టాలీవుడ్‌లో వరుసగా చిన్న సినిమాలు విడుదలవుతున్నాయి. ఈ నెలలో ఇప్పటికే పలు చిన్న సినిమాలు బాక్సాఫీస్‌ వద్ద సందడి చేశాయి.  నేడు(నవంబర్‌ 26) మరో చిన్న చిత్రం ‘రణస‍్థలి’ ప్రేక్షకుల ముందుకు వచ్చింది. ఈ చిత్రం ఎలా ఉందో రివ్యూలో చూద్దాం. 

కథేంటంటే..  బసవ( ధర్మ) అమ్ములు(చాందినీ రావు) ఇద్దరూ బావామరదళ్ళు. చిన్నప్పుడే తల్లిదండ్రులను పోగొట్టుకున్న అమ్ములు.. బసవ ఇంట్లోనే పెరుగుతుంది. బసవ తండ్రి(సమ్మెట గాంధీ) వీరిద్దరికి పెళ్లి చేస్తాడు. అయితే అనూహ్య పరిస్థితుల్లో అమ్ములు హత్యకు గురవుతుంది. చక్రవర్తి తోటలో పని చేయడానికి వచ్చిన కూలీలు..అతనితో పాటు అమ్ములును కూడా చంపేస్తారు. అసలు చక్రవర్తి ఎవరు? వీరిద్దరిని కూలీలుగా వచ్చిన కిరాయి గుండాలు ఎందుకు హత్య చేశారు? వారిని పంపించిదెవరు? భార్య హత్యకు కారణమైన వారిని బసవ ఎలా చంపాడు? అనేదే మిగతా కథ. 

ఎలా ఉందంటే..  'రణస్థలి'.. ఒక రివేంజ్‌ డ్రామా సినిమా. ప్రేమించి పెళ్లి చేసుకున్న భార్యని హత్య చేసిన  ముఠాని ఒక సాదాసీదా వ్యక్తి ఎలా మట్టుబెట్టాడు అన్నదే ఈ సినిమా కథ. దర్శకుడు పరశురామ్ శ్రీనివాస్ ఎంచుకున్న పాయింట్‌ పాతదే అయినా.. కథనం మాత్రం ఆసక్తికరంగా నడిపించాడు. చిన్నచిన్న లాజిక్స్ అక్కడక్కడ మిస్ అయ్యాయి కానీ ప్రేక్షకులందరినీ ఎంగేజ్ చేయడంలో కొంతవరకు విజయం సాధించారు. హీరో ఫ్రెండ్ కిడ్నాప్ ఎపిసోడ్ ఆకట్టుకుంటుంది. మాస్ ఆడియన్స్ ను సర్ప్రైజ్ చేసే విధంగా ఆ ఎపిసోడ్ ను డిజైన్ చేసుకున్నాడు. అయితే సినిమాలో హింస ఎక్కువగా ఉండడం ఓ వర్గం ఆడియన్స్‌కి ఇబ్బందిగా ఉంటుంది.  సస్పెన్స్, రా అండ్ రస్టిక్ మూవీస్ ఇష్టపడేవారికి ఈ చిత్రం నచ్చుతుంది. 

ఎవరెలా చేశారంటే...  బసవ పాత్రకి  ధర్మ న్యాయం చేశాడు. యాక్షన్ సన్నివేశాల్లో చక్కగా నటించాడు. అమ్ములు పాత్రలో నటించిన తెలుగు అమ్మాయి చాందిని రావు ఒదిగిపోయింది. ఈశ్వరిగా అమ్ము  తనదైన నటనతో మెప్పించింది. హీరో తండ్రి పాత్రలో సమ్మెట గాంధీ జీవించేశాడు. . విలన్ గా చేసిన శివతో పాటు మిగిలిన నటీనటులు తమ తమ పాత్రల పరిధిమేర నటించారు. కేశవ్ కిరణ్ నేపథ్య సంగీతం సినిమాకు ప్లస్‌ అయింది.  ఫైట్ మాస్టర్ డ్రాగన్ ప్రకాష్ యాక్షన్ ఎపిసోడ్స్ ని తీర్చిదిద్దిన విధానం బాగుంది. సినిమాటోగ్రఫీ పర్వాలేదు. నిర్మాణ విలువలు సినిమా స్థాయికి తగినట్లుగా ఉన్నాయి.
