Interior Architecture Masters Theses

• Master of Arts (MA) in Adaptive Reuse, a one-year+ program

• Master of Design (MDes) in Interior Studies / Adaptive Reuse, a two-year+ program

• Master of Design (MDes) in Interior Studies / Exhibition + Narrative Environments, a two-year+ program

Both programs take an innovative and progressive approach to addressing design issues intrinsic to the reuse and transformation of existing structures. US News & World Report and Design Intelligence have both ranked RISD’s Interior Architecture programs among the top in the country.

Each MA candidate produces a final project that begins with a research component in the fall and evolves into a studio/design project in the spring. MDes candidates demonstrate competency through self-directed Degree Projects that include a seminar on theory, a research component and a studio component. Each DP focuses on the transformation of an existing structure of their choice in the city of Providence. All MA and MDes candidates also participate in the RISD Graduate Thesis Exhibition , a large-scale public show held annually.

A detail of Patrick McNaughton work

Master of Fine Arts in Interior Design | Thesis 2011

Focused design research on an aspect of the interior design field that is most significant to each individual student is the focus of graduate thesis. With the guidance of thesis faculty, research and investigation aim to advance the theoretical, technical, material and/or formal state of knowledge in the field of interior design. Thesis projects, which culminate in both a design proposal and a supportive written text, involve rigorous analytical thinking, critical questioning and coherent project development. These explorations synthesize some of the most important issues relevant to the field today. An acute understanding of environmental impact, human health, behavior and perception, social responsibility, historical precedent, theoretical understanding, material investigation and artistic methodologies are explored. Innovative methods and designs result in these first thesis projects.

Master of Interior Design practicum projects

The practicum is a final project that is required for the first-professional degree. Students work in consultation with an advisory committee to formulate and develop the design project. Students must demonstrate a high level of achievement in design, critical thinking and communication skills as well as an ability to work independently.

Practicum projects include four stages:

  • Project proposal: A description of the theoretical basis, method(s) of inquiry, site, client and precedents.
  • Investigation: Development of the groundwork for the practicum gets underway on approval of the project proposal by the department's graduate program committee.
  • Intermediate review: Public presentation of highlights from the written document, the design programme and the preliminary stage drawings for review by the advisory committee. On successful completion of the intermediate review, students proceed to detailed design development.
  • Oral examination: Presentation of the completed practicum project to the examining committee (the former advising committee).

The Best Home Improvement Tips

What Do You Need To Write a Great Interior Design Thesis?

If you are an interior design graduate student, you most likely have plans to further your studies in this field.  One of the best ways to do this is by writing a superb thesis for your graduate level. This will not only show the faculty about your seriousness in this profession but also prepare you for the tougher tasks ahead.

Writing a thesis is not easy and before you get started, you need to identify and understand all the requirements. This article explores different things you need to write a superb interior design thesis including choosing the best topic, outlining your paper, reading sample papers from ThessisHelpers , among other things.

Read on and learn how you can ace your thesis project.

Start With The Project Requirements

It is true you have an idea of what to write about but this should wait first. The most important thing you need to write a great thesis is to understand the rules and guidelines. Every college has its unique writing philosophy and you need to follow the set requirements to avoid intermittent revisions. Discuss the project requirements with other students and seek clarification from your professor before you start writing.

1. A Great Topic

Your thesis is only as great as the topic you choose. Many MA students rush to pick the topic while this task is the most important in the writing process. Now that you know the writing guidelines start brainstorming for project ideas from different sources including family and friends, your teachers, other students, online writing services among other sources.

Choose an interesting topic that will engross you during research and which readers will also enjoy. Don’t choose a very broad topic because you have neither the time nor the space to exhaust it all. Your topic should also benefit the interior design industry and the academic community.

2. Create A Writing Schedule

You have to reorganize your life when you start working on your thesis to avoid stress. You can do this by creating a writing schedule. Poor organization is one of the main causes of stress in college according to a survey by College Parents and to overcome the challenge; you have to plan your writing and other responsibilities.

3. Write Down Your Thesis Objectives

The rule of thumb in writing is always to have a goal when you start writing. If you have no idea what your thesis will achieve, there’s no need for writing it. Set clear objectives and goals for your paper as these will act as the yardsticks to guide you. If you write without any objectives, you will not only struggle during research but readers will get confused along the way and lose attention.

4. Set Your Thesis Within The Interior Design Context

interior design master thesis topics

If you want your thesis to have a great impact, then take time to observe the contemporary interior design world and write something that provides a solution or provokes new thinking in your chosen profession. For instance, you can talk about the impact of interior design on the environment or such a mind-provoking idea. Avoid academic topics that add no value to your profession.

You should consider using an essay writing professional to augment your thoughts. With these few ideas, you can write a great interior design thesis with an impact on the industry.

Two-year master in English, starts in September

Master Interior Architecture: Research + Design, MIARD at the Piet Zwart Institute is an international post-graduate programme that is part of the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam. MIARD is a two-year multidisciplinary course with a focus on practice-based research and spatial strategies in the field of interior architecture. We invite you to visit our digital archive and explore the work produced in the programme.

Interior architects face a shifting planet enmeshed in new realities, technologies, socio-political, environmental and economic challenges; consequently, practice today calls for different means, for practitioners to be adaptable, resourceful and seek out future forms. At MIARD, design is a form of research that circulates across spatial dimensions with numerous pathways and scales —from local issues to global changes, from objects to architecture and beyond. The interior is an emergent and multilayered site of research, cultural analysis, critical reflection and space of conjecture. By merging spatial practice and research with critical strategies in the programme , students develop their self-directed, practice-based research positioned amongst cultural and environmental urgencies.  The programme engages with a range of topical themes, methods, tools, and formats to think critically about practice and modes of production in the context of the (built) environment amid a theoretical and historical framework. Our multidisciplinary and imaginative approach to the development of a creative practice produces a learning environment that welcomes diversity, originality, and conversation amid intellectual and professional rigor.

Throughout the two-year programme, students work with a community of professionals — architects, designers, artists, researchers, curators, editors, publishers, graphic designers, interaction designers, writers and educators. The international expertise and varied disciplinary backgrounds enrich our education and directly connect students to a global research and professional culture. Our faculty provides a stimulating learning context in the development of diverse creative practices and professionalisation.  They work closely with international students that join us from around the globe with different professional, educational and cultural backgrounds. Together, teachers, students, and external professionals create a vibrant and respectful community where we learn and work with each other, engage in conversation, and exchange ideas, which is an aspect of our dialogue-based learning approach.

We make things  public  and engage with broader communities through a mix of activities – guest talks, studio visits, workshops, and intimate conversations coupled with excursions, collaborations, and exhibitions. We invite people to join us at MIARD from diverse practices to talk about their projects and work with our students.  These activities enrich our community, a student’s professional network, and educational experience.  In recent years, we have participated in national and international professional events and fostered collaborations with;  Het Nieuwe Instituut ,  Lisbon Architecture Triennale ,  Salone del Mobile Milano ,  Kunstinstituut Melly ,  Flevoland Art Weekend ,   deSingel Internationale Kunstcampus , and  Dutch Design Week , amongst others. The work of students and alumni has been recognized and published by  e-flux Architecture ,  Metropolis M ,  Domus ,  Dezeen ,  DAMN Magazine , and  Archinect , to name a few. These experiences allow one to make informed decisions about the circulation and communication of their work across different contexts and formats to professional and general audiences.

MIARD is located in a modern building with a wide selection of academic, production  facilities , and resources in the center of Rotterdam: a culturally diverse and creative city with vibrant communities — recognized for its dynamic cultural production in architecture, design, and the arts. Programme structure, programme description.

MIARD is a nationally accredited course with a focus on practice-based research and spatial strategies in the field of interior architecture. Research is multifaceted and self-directed in the program. Practice-based research at MIARD aims to develop the bodies of knowledge, contextual framework, resources, and methods of a student’s spatial practice, which is learned by  doing  research. The program identifies research  in and through the arts , also known as “artistic research,” which is research by designers and artists that is produced in and through their work and collaborations. The research activity requires a strong sense of curiosity, analysis, and diligence to formulate positions, scrutinize assumptions and cultural systems.  In the program, students identify their subject matter and methods to formulate a distinct area of study, design, and writing. They critically reflect and analyze issues within their field of practice and across a broader social-cultural, historical, and theoretical context. They make informed decisions about the impact of their work with the work of others and its circulation and reception across broader (professional) communities.

The curriculum is multidisciplinary and integrated. We explore a range of topical themes, methods, tools, and formats to educate students to think creatively about practice and modes of production in the context of architecture, interiors, design, and art amid a theoretical, cultural, and historical framework. Writing, reading, and dialogue are viewed as forms of research. Navigating media and technologies imaginatively as a way to materialize and circulate projects to broader audiences. These creative explorations influence and shape a self-directed methodology. The first year of the course establishes relevant research and design skills that prepare students to work on their Graduation Project in the second year. All classes are taught in English.

Curriculum modules include —  Thematic Design Projects, Critical Strategies, Multiple Media, and Graduation Project.

Graduation Project & Thesis

The  Graduation Project is a yearlong, self-directed exploration composed of a design project and thesis. By merging practice and theory in a multidisciplinary process, students develop a self-directed, critical viewpoint and construct a unique body of work that confronts existing spatial ideologies and expands notions of space. The thesis encompasses the theoretical framework of the design activity: the methods, contexts, questions, and critical and analytical approach of the student. The design project and thesis influence each other throughout the process, creating reciprocity between the two endeavors. During this time, students achieve a level of maturity and autonomy in their practice and professional network; in parallel, the work embodies its own identity with a distinct methodology that guides and illuminates a student’s voice and its broader socio-cultural impact. The final body of work is the accumulation of the two-year educational and professional trajectory at MIARD.

The final projects are exhibited publicly during our annual  graduation exhibition , which is planned with the Piet Zwart Institute and Willem de Kooning Academy graduation events in Rotterdam.

20 Types of Architecture thesis topics

interior design master thesis topics

An architectural thesis is perhaps the most confusing for a student because of the range of typologies of buildings that exist. It also seems intimidating to pick your site program and do all the groundwork on your own. While choosing an architectural thesis topic, it is best to pick something that aligns with your passion and interest as well as one that is feasible. Out of the large range of options, here are 20 architectural thesis topics .

1. Slum Redevelopment (Urban architecture)

Slums are one of the rising problems in cities where overcrowding is pertinent. To account for this problem would be one of great value to the city as well as the inhabitants of the slum. It provides them with better sanitation and well-being and satisfies their needs.

20 Types of thesis topics - Sheet1

2. Maggie Center (Healthcare architecture)

This particular typology of buildings was coined by a cancer patient,  Margaret Keswick Jencks,   who believed that cancer-treatment centres’ environment could largely improve their health and wellbeing by better design. This led a large number of starchitects to participate and build renowned maggie centres.

20 Types of thesis topics - Sheet2

3. Urban Sprawl Redesign (Urban design)

The widening of city boundaries to accommodate migrants and overcrowding of cities is very common as of late. To design for the constant urban sprawl would make the city life more convenient and efficient for all its users.

20 Types of thesis topics - Sheet3

4. Redesigning Spaces Under Elevated Roads and Metros (Urban infrastructure)

A lot of space tends to become dead space under metros or elevated roads. To use these spaces more efficiently and engage them with the public would make it an exciting thesis topic.

20 Types of thesis topics - Sheet4

5. Urban Parks (Urban landscape)

Urban parks are not only green hubs for the city, which promotes the well-being of the city on a larger level, but they also act as great places for the congregation and bring a community together.

20 Types of thesis topics - Sheet5

6. Reusing Abandoned Buildings (Adaptive reuse)

All buildings after a point become outdated and old but, what about the current old and abandoned buildings? The best way to respond to these is not by demolishing them; given the amount of effort it takes to do so, but to enhance them by restoring and changing the building to current times.

20 Types of thesis topics - Sheet6

7. Farming in Cities (Green urban spaces)

With climate change and population on the rise, there is statistical proof that one needs to start providing farming in cities as there is not sufficient fertile land to provide for all. Therefore, this makes a great thesis topic for students to explore.

20 Types of thesis topics - Sheet7

8. Jails (Civil architecture)

To humanize the function of jails, to make it a place of change and rehabilitation, and break from the stereotypical way of looking at jails. A space that will help society look at prisoners as more than monsters that harm, and as fellow humans that are there to change for everyone’s betterment.

20 Types of thesis topics - Sheet8

9. Police Academies (Civil architecture)

Academies that train people to be authoritative and protective require spaces for training mentally and physically; focussing on the complexity of the academy and focussing on the user to enhance their experience would work in everyone’s favour.

20 Types of thesis topics - Sheet9

10. High Court (Civil architecture)

Courtrooms are more often than not looked at as spaces that people fear, given the longevity of court cases. It can be a strenuous space; therefore, understanding the user groups’ state of mind and the problems faced can be solved using good design.
