Nam Vo Says This $1,750 "Liquid Surgery" Serum Is Worth the Hype

You only have to go onto Nam Vo's Instagram for half a second to start envying what the New York City-based makeup artist calls her "dewy dumpling" glow . Luckily, she often shares the secrets to her luminous skin on her Instagram stories. Recently, she posted a picture of the MBR Liquid Surgery Serum she's been slathering on lately, noting it's the most expensive product she owns (it's $1,750). She even joked that she was "accused of being a 12-year-old yesterday and a 16-year-old today."

The pricey serum with a wild name was gifted to Vo by one of her favorite New York City-based aestheticians, Aida Bicaj. So I asked her how she discovered the product. Turns out, MBR found her first. In 2015, she met the company's CEO and was introduced to the serum. The same year, MBR launched in the US, and Bicaj loved the products so much that her namesake spa was the first place in America to sell it.

The Liquid Surgery Serum appealed to her as it's spiked with a proprietary complex that contains synthetic perfluorocarbons, which help carry oxygen to skin. As the serum absorbs, oxygen is said to replace the excess carbon dioxide in dermal tissue to purportedly help "produce a youthful, radiant, ageless complexion" Bicaj says.

"Generally, the oxygen content and the skin's ability to deliver oxygen to the dermal tissue decreases gradually starting at the age of 20, and by the age of 50, it reaches only half of the original value," she further explains. "The percentage of carbon dioxide increases proportionally. A lack of oxygen at the cellular level causes aging, increasing lines to wrinkles and the forming of age spots."

As much as I wanted to take Bicaj's word for it, I was still skeptical about how a serum could possibly give your skin plastic surgery-like results without added pain or downtime. I took a closer look at its ingredients and how much it takes to actually make the product.

As someone who finds joy in reading the ingredient list of skin-care products the way some people do about their favorite basketball player's stats, I looked forward to checking out what makes up the Liquid Surgery Serum. The list was surprisingly short but just as mind-boggling as its price. Many of them had trademark symbols and registered signs next to them and fancy proper names, like Pentavitin, CroNoline, and Syn-Ake. The only ones I recognized were ceramide, shea butter, and hyaluronic acid.

To learn more about how the serum is supposed to smooth skin and iron out wrinkles, I sent the ingredient list to a couple of cosmetic chemists, as well as a dermatologist. Many pointed out that I probably didn't recognize most of the ingredients because the trademarked ones are raw materials from outside manufacturers that MBR combined into its formula.

• Ceramide III: Like the ceramides that spike some of the latest and greatest skin-care products on the market, this form is "a human-skin identical fat molecule that is a vital part of our skin barrier," explains Arash Akhavan, a New York City-based cosmetic dermatologist. "It helps to repair dry and sensitive skin."
• Shambrilla oil: Derived from a flowering plant native to California and Oregon, shambrilla oil is an emollient that "makes the product feel slippery and soft on skin," says cosmetic chemist Perry Romanowski.
• Shea butter : A better-known emollient that also has occlusive qualities.
• Hyaluronic acid
• Pentavitin: Cosmetic chemist Ginger King calls this simply a "moisture magnet."
• Liquid Surgery Complex (perfluorocarbons): "Perfluorocarbons are a class of man-made compounds made of fluorine and carbon that increase oxygen delivery to the skin," says Akhavan. King says they have healing potential. Akhavan adds: "No significant benefit has been proven scientifically, but it is said by some to increase collagen production and skin hydration."
• Golden Collagenine: This one is "a peptide containing precious metals like gold and platinum," Romanowski explains. "There's little evidence it does much when put on the surface of skin."
• Complex from Syn-Ake: This synthetic peptide works as a muscle relaxant. When applied topically, "this compound can help to relax facial wrinkles," Akhavan says.
• Trylagen: This combination of peptides and proteins is said to boost collagen production, according to Akhavan. There's little evidence to back that claim up, though, Romanowski adds.
• Cyclopeptide-5: This particular peptide has been shown to decrease sagging and wrinkles, says Akhavan.
• CroNoline: "This ingredient is a mystery to me," Akhavan admits. "I can't find anything on it."
• SYN-HYCAN: The last peptide on the list is moisturizing, notes Romanowski. It supposedly "boosts hyaluronic acid production in the skin and strengthens collagen fibers," Akhavan adds.

Now that the science lesson is over, let's talk finances. All the trademarked ingredients are what hike up the price of the serum, the experts conclude. Although none of them know just how much of each ingredient is used in the final formulation, in Romanowski's opinion, "there is no serum on Earth that would be worth $1,750." He suggests instead using a product like the $29 Olay Regenerist Regenerating Serum instead as he says you'll likely get similar wrinkle-reducing benefits from it.

Regardless of how much of each of the expensive ingredients are added to the serum, King is doubtful that your skin could absorb all the actives in it. "Cosmetics, by definition, should not penetrate deep into the skin — or it's a drug," she explains. "So, it's like spending $1,750 versus $100 for a pool cover. It may make you feel fancy but it's not necessarily doing you any better than a $150 product — that's my limit that I am willing to pay, as a cosmetic chemist, for a good [skincare] product."

Picking which skin-care products you used on your face every morning and night is completely a personal choice. Spend $10, $100, or $1,750 — as long as the product isn't irritating your skin and making it break out, feel free to do whatever you want. Skin-care polices don't exist.

This serum most likely won't replace the wrinkle-reducing results of Botox or the skin-tightening benefits of a face-lift . But if you're terrified of needles and getting surgery and happen to have the money to spend, this is an incredibly luxurious way to treat your skin.

Znakomity peeling kwasowy do wrażliwej cery.

Beta enzym był drugim produktem z kwasami i pierwszym kwasowym peelingiem, jakiego używałam. Po raz pierwszy kupiłam go sporo po trzydziestce, mając wielkie oczekiwania że względu na renomę firmy, obietnice zawarte w opisie kosmetyku i moją wrażliwą, mieszaną, miejscami naczynkowa cerę. Od pierwszego użycia byłam i nadal jestem nim totalnie zachwycona. Preparat świetnie nadaje się do pielęgnacji cery wrażliwej, przepięknie ją oczyszcza nie wywołując żadnych podrażnień. Może nie działa od razu ani uderzeniowo, ale suma summarum gdybym miała wybrać jeden jedyny produkt z kwasami byłby to bezsprzecznie beta enzym. Uważam, że oczyszczanie jest podstawą pielęgnacji i nie ma bez niego możliwości uzyskania pięknej, młodej skóry, toteż kładę na nią ogromny nacisk. Beta enzym z każdym dniem wydobywa coraz piękniejsza, delikatniejsza wersję mnie dodatkowo wspomagając wchłanianie stosowanej następnie pielęgnacji. Nie wywołuje żadnych, nawet najmniejszych skutków ubocznych. Jest idealny i z całego serca szczerze go uwielbiam.

najlepszy enzymatyczny peeling

Beta-Enzym poleciła mi konsultanta w Douglasie, kiedyś cos mnie wysypało na twarzy (jakieś podskórne krostki, paskudne) i ni jak nie mogłam się tego pozbyć. Do czasu... :) Generalnie - wystarczył mi tydzień :) od tamtego czasu skóra była IDEALNA: żadnych nie chcianych i nie kontrolowanych wysypów, dopóki nie zaczęłam próbować 3enzymów Tołpy... Po 3enzymach - znowu mnie wysypało, ale MBR BETA-ENZYM jest na to idealny! :) poradził sobie - również w kilka dni! Produkt ŚWIATOWEJ klasy, wart swojej ceny. Przy długim stosowaniu - poprawia kondycje skóry i jej ogólny wygląd. Można wyjść bez żadnego makijażu! :) Polecam! UWAGA - mnie on trochę piecze przy nakładaniu na twarz, ale warto wytrzymać. To też nie jest takie pieczenie jakie miałam przy 3enzymach - jakby mi ktoś skórę żelazem wypalał....

To nie jest zwykły peeling to jest kosmetyk ktory działa kompleksowo a efekty są oszałamiające i widoczne natychmiast . Stosuję codziennie wieczorem ,trzymam na twarzy 20 minut , nakładając pierwszy raz trzymałam godzinę, tak poleciła mi pani w Douglasie mówiąc ze to prawdziwy wysysacz syfów i rzeczywiście miała racje :-) Wszystkie zmiany skórne i stany zapalne wygoiły się dosłownie po pierwszum użyciu, z dnia na dzień skóra jest piękniejsza ,znikają przebarwienia ,zmarszczki się wygładzają. Po tygodniu stosowania skora wygląda młodo i tryska zdrowiem . Uzywam z przyjemnością bo po kazdym zabiegu skora jest jeszcze ładniejsza . Znika porowatość ,cera jest gładziuteńka. Polecam bardzo ,niesamowite jest to że efekty są od razu widoczne . Zdecydowanie jest wart swojej ceny, jesli masz problem z niedoskonałościami ,przebarwieniami ,bliznami lub twoja skóra jest zmęczona i szara nie zastanawiaj się to jest prawdziwa petarda ! ;-) Pozdrawiam Joanna

Są kremy, dobre kremy i jest... MBR

Tą pielęgnacja to Lamborghini z siedzeniami i tapicerką na zamówienie! Naprawdę, używałam mnóstwo produktów z niższej jak i z tej wysokiej półki ale czegoś takiego jak MBR nie było!!! Beta enzym to kluczowy produkt który "otwiera" naszą skórę dzięki czemu każda pielęgnacja którą później stosujemy jeszcze lepiej przenika do skóry i skuteczniej działa. Przebarwienia- a co to? Suche skórki- serio był taki problem? Rozszerzone pory- nie dotyczy mnie już! Niedoskonałości- jak wyglądają bo nie pamiętam..? Zaskórniki i zatkane pory- serio? Maseczki z glinką już mi niepotrzebne.. Konsekwentnie używany sprawia że cera pięknieje z dnia na dzień i z miesiąca na miesiąc. Lubię Sensai i Sisley ale WYZNAJĘ MBR!!!

I Tried a $3,000 Facial in Search of Supermodel Skin

The spa at Manhattan's Peninsula Hotel offers high-end treatments by Medical Beauty Research. BAZAAR.com's Features Editor decided to take the most expensive facial for a test drive.

For $3,000, I was about to undergo 90 minutes of age reversal and cell transformation with the spa’s new Medical Beauty Research facial that would, with the help of its medical-grade active ingredients, leave me looking "exceptionally smooth, flawless and youthful"—aka the skin of a supermodel.

After I sank into a heated bed that automatically propped my knees up for comfort, my facialist, Lucy, offered me a choice of music: "Classical, new age, Asian-inspired, or Ayurvedic?” she asked softly, while peering at my skin under a bright light to determine how best to customize my facial.

Known for its innovative treatments—like the new Vedic Aromatherapy designed by Australia’s Subtle Energies —the Peninsula's spa prides itself on combining traditional therapies with the latest technologies. For its 30th anniversary this year, the spa introduced several new, extremely indulgent treatments—the most extravagant (and results-driven, they tell me) being this $3,000 facial by German skincare brand, Medical Beauty Research (MBR).

Created in 2001 by a group of dermatologists and plastic surgeons, MBR promises revolutionary ingredients in concentrated formulations. “Their products work on a cellular level down to the dermal layer of the skin,” explains Lucy, who quickly establishes that my skin is sensitive to touch (I suffer from rosacea), so she forgoes extractions and instead focuses on cooling my skin with an algae mask.

Each MBR product (free of mineral oil, parabens, phthalates and artificial fragrances) is manufactured in small and exclusive batches, which is reflected in its prices. As Lucy slathers the brand’s Liquid Surgery Serum ($1,730), Bust Up Concentrate ($250), and Executive Gel Mask ($380) onto my skin through Ayurvedic massage, with an added hand and foot massage to relieve hyper-pigmentation and swollen joints, the cost of the facial starts to make more sense.

The facials are best suited to those looking to reduce wrinkles, sun damage and sagging skin

Building on MBR’s $500 Age-Defying Customized Facial, the $3,000 treatment includes an four added enhancements that deliver deeper, instant results. The Liquid Surgery Serum is touted as a revolutionary product “for a complete rejuvenation of the cell metabolism, revealing an exceptionally perfect complexion,” states the website. Meanwhile the Bust Up Concentrate "stimulates the microcirculation, rejuvenates the cell structure and promotes the skin's elasticity," and the Executive Gel Mask aims to "improve the lipid barrier on the skin and smooth its surface". To ensure the facial’s results continue outside the spa, I’m given a complimentary bottle of Liquid Surgery Serum to take home.

For those who don’t have a spare $3,000 to blow on a facial, the spa also offers MBR's Age-Defying Customized Facial which promises to "revive and hydrate the skin’s natural cell functions, restore firmness and elasticity and regenerate collagen and elastin fibers". Your face, neck and décolleté receive equal love, with an enzyme peel and a final moisturizing seal to "maximize your skin's resiliency". Both the $3,000 and the $500 options are extolled as an excellent accompaniment to pre- and post-surgical procedures—and both are best suited to those looking to reduce wrinkles, sun damage and sagging skin.

After my own 90-minute experience, Lucy explained that through MBR's products, my cells were left with increased levels of oxygen, and the skin creases on my décolleté were reduced through microcontractions. Collagen was stimulated and fibroblastic structures (used in wound healing) were strengthened in my face. Essentially, my skin was plumped from the inside out.

But as a 30-year-old woman with only the beginning stages of surface wrinkles, Lucy admitted that I'm not really the prime customer for such a collagen-focused facial. Women in their 40's and 50's who receive this treatment monthly, she said, will see lasting, drastic results.

As for my transformation into Miranda Kerr? I certainly left the spa feeling more relaxed and refreshed than I had in months. My skin looked dewy and replenished—like I had just spent a week in the Bahamas—and was smooth to touch. But unfortunately, not even a $3,000 facial can turn you into a supermodel.
