Pokemon GO 2023 Festival of Lights: All Field Research Tasks & Rewards
The yearly Pokemon GO Festival of Lights celebration is back for 2023, and it has brought a number of new Field Research Tasks for players to pick up and complete!
The new Field Research Tasks for this year’s celebration have some great rewards, including a trio of light-themed Pokemon.
Spinning a PokeStop or Gym Photo Disc from 10 AM local time on November 7 to 8 PM local time on November 12 could give you one of the event Field Research Tasks for the 2023 Festival of Lights.
These are all of the limited-time Field research Tasks available during the 2023 Festival of Lights event:
Out of the Pokemon you can catch from completing Field Research Tasks, you can encounter the shiny versions of Darumaka and Morelull. However, the odds of you finding either of these shinies are very low.
Meanwhile, shiny Tadbulb has not come to Pokemon GO yet, so it is not available.
Despite this, you’ll still want to catch as many Tadbulbs as you can. After all, you don’t know when it will next return to the game after the end of the event!
It’s important to remember that even if you can only pick up these limited-time Field Research Tasks until 8 PM local time on November 12, when the Festival of Lights ends, you can complete them at any time!

All Pokemon Go Fest 2023: New York City Special Research tasks and rewards
Some players may have expected Pokémon Go Fest 2023: New York City to be a copy and paste of the previous in-person events this season, but that is not the case. A decent chunk of the Special Research available has changed at least a little, and the featured Pokémon won’t be the same either.
While players are out and about in New York from Aug. 18 to 20, you can expect to see rare Pokémon like Kangaskhan and Aerodactyl popping up during the Habitat Rotation.
That pairs perfectly with some of the rare raids like Xerneas and Yveltal—without taking into account Mega Rayquaza descending into Mega Raids . And, this is all content you will want to pay attention to if you want to complete the Special Research offered for this event.
While splitting time between the park and city experiences, as listed on your event ticket, you will have different research tasks to complete that will reward you with things like an encounter with the Mythical Pokémon, Diancie , and items to Mega Evolve your Rayquaza.

You will see two distinct lists of Special Research here for the event itself. That is because the Park Adventure and City Sights research is based on the content players are most likely to encounter during those specific hours of play.

There is no limitation on when you can complete them during the event, just that they are separate and have unique rewards based on their themes—that being Diancie and Mega Rayquaza.

There's also the Rediscover Kanto and World of Wonders quests to complete! Don't forget to try out Routes , Gift Exchange and Party Play while you're hunting down rare Pokémon , fighting in the Go Battle League or competing in PokéStop Showcases .
Diancie originally debuted in Pokémon Go as part of the Go Fest 2023 celebrations. It first became available to players who attended the Go Fest 2023 event in Osaka or London on Friday 4th August. Diancie could then be caught by players who attended the in-person Go Fest 2023 event in New York and finally worldwide on Saturday 26th August during the Go Fest 2023 Global event.
During all of these instances, catching Diancie was pay-to-play content. Players who purchased tickets for Go Fest 2024 Global can catch Diancie once they're completed Step 4 of Fascinating Facets . If you were one of these players, then, instead of a second Diancie, you'll receive additional Candy for this Pokémon.
Mega Diancie was also released alongside Diancie - appearing in Mega Raids during both the in-person and global Go Fest events. To help players attending these events complete this Mega Evolution, you could not only earn additional Mega Diancie Energy through specific field research tasks but by catching Carbink.
Nearly a year later, like certain mythical Pokémon in the past such as Shaymin, Diancie has been made available to all Pokémon Go players for free via the Glitz and Glam special research quest.
Good luck catching Diancie in Pokémon Go!

How to get a Master Ball in Pokémon Go, and when is it best to use one?
Years after the game first arrived, a Master Ball can be obtained in Pokémon Go .
The Master Ball is perhaps the most iconic Pokémon-catching device of all time. First appearing way back in Pokémon Red and Blue of the main series, the Master Ball has a very special trait — a 100% catch rate on any Pokémon you use it on.
Long-time players of Pokémon Go will be very familiar with that sinking feeling of finishing a raid and failing to catch the subsequent encounter, and with the Master Ball, this is one way to ensure the Pokémon will definitely be yours.
However, know that Master Balls are very rare, and should be used sparingly. With that in mind — how do you get a Master Ball, and when should you use one?
How to get a Master Ball in Pokémon Go
New Master Balls are added to Pokémon Go as part of seasonal or timed research quests.
The next opportunity will be with the Masterwork Research: Catching Wonders research quest , which debuts on Tuesday, May 14 part of Season 14: World of Wonders.
Not only will this be free for all players, but it’ll be classed as a special research quest — meaning once you have started the quest, there is no time limit for completing each step.
This is not the first time a Master Ball has been added to the game. Previous releases include:
- Let’s Go Special Research as part of Season 10: Rising Heroes , after completing the fifth step. This is when the Master Ball first debuted, and if you logged into the game before the season ended on June 1, 2023, the opportunity to complete the quest and earn a Master Ball will still be available in the ‘Special’ quests tab.
- Timed Investigation: Master Ball as part of Season 12: Adventures Abound . This was time-limited research which ran until Dec 1, 2023, and involved a variety of lengthy objectives, including catching 1,000 Pokémon, spinning 300 PokéStops and completing 150 Field Research tasks.
Here’s how the Master Ball is introduced as part of the Let’s Go Special Research as part of 2023’s Rising Heroes season:
Can you get more than one Master Ball in Pokémon Go?
Unlike the main games, where the Master Ball is often a one-off item, it’s possible to acquire more than one Master Ball in Pokémon Go.
To date, it has debuted in three seasons so far - Season 10, Season 12, and Season 14, as a mix of free Special and Timed Research. The current track record suggests a new Master Ball will be available every other season — meaning we can expect a fourth Master Ball as part of Season 16 sometime between Sept. 1 and Dec. 1, 2024.
And yes, you can carry more than one Master Ball at once — so if you’re not sure what to use it on, there’s no rush in keeping a few in your inventory.
Either way, Master Balls are rare — so earn them while you can! When you finally get your hands on one - what is it best used for?
Master Ball best use: When should I use my Master Ball in Pokémon Go?
Master Balls are very rare, and with a 100% catch rate, should ideally only be used in very specific circumstances.
What you decide to use it on is entirely up to you — however, we have some recommendations for the best use of a Master Ball:
- Galarian Articuno, Zapdos, or Moltres found when using Daily Adventure Incense, which currently have a 0.3% catch rate and a 90% flee rate, and are arguably the most difficult Pokémon to catch in the game.
- A high IV legendary encounter following a raid that you want to level up, such as Mewtwo . We recommend using your regular set of Premier Balls first, then using a Master Ball as a last resort.
- Incredibly rare wild encounters such as the ‘Lake Trio’ Uxie, Mesprit or Azelf, or Unown — the exceptions for Unown being a letter/form you already have, or if it spawns during an event, when they are far more common.
- A shiny Pokémon in the wild . Some exceptions to this include the encounter following a raid (when the catch is guaranteed with your first Premier Ball, provided you land it), and during events such as Community Day, when shinies are far more common.
Ultimately, it’s your call what you decide to use a Master Ball on. If you decide to use it on a Pidgey, go ahead — we’ve all been there — but we recommend saving it for an encounter with a Pokémon you would not want to live without.
Can you miss with a Master Ball in Pokémon Go?
Finally, one question that might come to mind is — can you miss with a Master Ball?
The good news is no, as a special animation will play as soon as you activate the ball. This not only means you will definitely catch it, but brings a little more fanfare to the occasion of putting the Master Ball to use.
You can watch this in action via PokeMiners on Twitter :
Additionally, as shown in the above video, you will get a prompt before you use the Master Ball — meaning it will be difficult to throw one by accident.
