Business Model of Airtel

Airtel showcases an exemplary business model for others to follow irrespective of the industry that each belongs to. Airtel focuses mainly on two things: customer acquisition and servicing (retention) and business development or expansion. Their vision and mission clearly state that their ultimate goal is to be a globally admired telecom service and to mainly focus on customer satisfaction and provide them innovative services that tend to be cost-efficient products.

The other functions that include hardware, network management, backend applications (billing, etc.), and other services are outsourced. This business model has been pioneered by Airtel and inspires many newcomers in the game.

What is unique in the business model of Airtel?

As we have already mentioned, Airtel believes in outsourcing everything else apart from their marketing , sales, and finance operations and the 'minutes factory' model of low cost and high volumes.

Airtel is widely recognized as the pioneer of such a strategy, inspiring tens of thousands of other brands and entrepreneurs . The equipment of Airtel is also provided and maintained by other companies namely Ericsson, Huawei, and Nokia Networks; and US-based Amdocs provides Airtel with the IT support that the brand requires.

JioFiber Plans vs Airtel: The Ultimate Showdown

Jiofiber vs airtel fiber: internet speed.

When it comes to speed, JioFiber offers plans with speeds ranging from 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps. The basic plan, which costs Rs 399 per month , offers a speed of 100 Mbps, while the top-end plan, priced at Rs 3,999 per month, provides a Jio internet speed of 1 Gbps.

In terms of speed, both JioFiber and Airtel Xstream offer similar plans with comparable speeds. However, it is important to note that the actual speed that you get may depend on factors such as your location, network congestion, and the type of device you are using.

Airtel Xstream Fiber vs JioFiber: Price

Pricing is an important factor to consider when choosing an internet service provider. JioFiber offers plans starting from Rs 699 per month, while Airtel Xstream offers plans starting from Rs 799 per month.

The basic plan of JioFiber offers a speed of 100 Mbps with a data limit of 100 GB, while the basic plan of Airtel Xstream offers a speed of 100 Mbps with a data limit of 150 GB. When it comes to pricing, Jio Fiber appears to be more affordable than Airtel Xstream.

However, it is important to note that the data limits on Jio Fiber plans are lower than those of Airtel Xstream. If you consume a lot of data, you may need to opt for a higher plan, which could make Jio Fiber more expensive than Airtel Xstream.

Jio Broadband vs Airtel Broadband: Data Limits

Data limits are an important consideration when choosing an internet service provider. JioFiber offers plans with data limits ranging from 100 GB to unlimited , depending on the plan that you choose. The basic plan offers a data limit of 100 GB, while the top-end plan offers unlimited data.

On the other hand, Airtel Xstream offers plans with data limits ranging from 150 GB to 3.3 TB , depending on the plan that you choose. The basic plan offers a data limit of 150 GB, while the top-end plan offers a data limit of 3.3 TB.

When it comes to data limits, Airtel Xstream offers higher data limits than JioFiber. If you consume a lot of data, you may need to opt for a higher plan on Jio Fiber, which could make it more expensive than Airtel Xstream.

Fair Usage Policy (FUP)

Most internet service providers in India have something known as Fair Usage Policy (FUP) which means there is a fixed or pre-defined amount of data that is closed to the maximum given speed shown on your plan. After this data amount is exhausted, the internet speed provided by the broadband reduces significantly until your billing cycle is completed.

Airtel Fiber vs JioFiber: Customer Care Service

Customer service is an important consideration when choosing an internet service provider. Both JioFiber and Airtel Xstream offer customer support through various channels, including phone, email, and chat. However, the quality of customer service may vary depending on the company.

JioFiber is known for its prompt customer service, with a dedicated customer care team available 24/7 to resolve any issues that customers may have. Jio's consumers can contact Jio customer service by calling 1991 (toll-free) from their registered cellphone number if they have any questions about recharge plans, data balance, validity, recharge confirmation, or promos. Jio's consumers can report any complaints by dialing 198. (toll-free).

Quarterly Results: Bharti Airtel adds 9 million customers in the fourth quarter of 2024

' src=

Airtel’s customer base in India rose from 397 million in the previous quarter to 406 million in the fourth quarter of the financial year 2024 (January-March 2024), marking a quarter-on-quarter growth of 2.4%. Within its overall customer base, 352 million come from mobile services. The average revenue per user (ARPU) for these services came to Rs 209, only a slight increase from the previous quarter where its ARPU stood at Rs. 208.

Insights from the data:

Rise in data customers: Of Airtel’s total mobile customer base, 74.1% or 260 million are data users. Of these, 252 million are using data on 4G and 5G networks. The 4G/5G data customers rose by 7.8 million this quarter.

The company saw a consolidated data usage of 17,391 PB [ 1PB= 1 million GB] marking a 6.2% rise from the previous quarter. The company also saw a 2.9% increase in average data usage per customer, with it going from 22 GB in the previous quarter to 22.6 GB this quarter.

Performance of Airtel’s digital segments:  The company reported a customer base of 220 million monthly active users across Airtel Thanks, Xtreme, and Wynk, adding another 10 million to their collective customer base this quarter. Within these, Airtel Xtreme Play has five million paid customers.

Airtel’s Homes business sees 4.5% growth in its customer base: Airtel added 331,000 subscribers to its Homes business (this includes home broadband, direct-to-home subscription, and fixed-line services) this quarter. This took its overall customer base from 7.3 million last quarter to 7.6 million. Average revenue per user from the Homes business stood at Rs. 577, a 1% decline from the previous quarter where it was Rs. 583.

Airtel’s financial performance:  Airtel India’s revenue stood at Rs. 28,513 crore this quarter,  a 12% year-on-year rise in revenue. The company’s earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) were Rs 59,009 crore; its EBITDA margin stood at 53.8%. The company incurred capital expenditure of Rs. 8,491 crore.

Consolidated revenue across all countries that Airtel serves stood at Rs.37,599 crore, marking a 4% year-on-year rise. However, net income (after exceptional items) declined by 31% year on year as of March 31, 2024. It stood at Rs. 2,071.6 crore compared to March 2023, where net income was Rs. 3,005.6 crore.

Operational highlights from the quarter:

Airtel argues against multi-telco agreements for virtual network operators:  In March the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) came out with a consultation paper proposing that virtual network operators (VNOs) should be allowed to enter into agreements with more than one telecom company to provide access services. Airtel responded to it by saying that “there have hardly been any requests from VNO (Access Authorisation) seeking such an arrangement.”

It also pointed out that the VNO model makes sense in markets where telecom companies have spare capacity and are unable to reach customers directly, which is not the case in India’s wireline telecom industry.
