Google Slides is usually amazing! But, when it comes to adding mathematical symbols and equations in Google Slides, it just feels like a hassle! If you are new to Google Slides, especially if you are a teacher or a student, you will definitely be left wondering whether you can add equations in Google Slides!

You can use the “Special Characters” option to insert equations in Google Slides. First, click on “Insert”. Then, select the “Special Characters” option from the dropdown. A new window will open up. You can either choose the category or simply search for the symbol by name and build the equation.

In the rest of this article, I will explain how to use the built-in feature and add-ons to add equations in Google slides. I will also discuss adding chemical formulae in Google Slides. So, stick around till the end with me to learn the basics of adding equations in Google slides !

Can you Insert an Equation in Google Slides?

Preparing a slide is nothing complicated If it contains normal text and images. The problem arises when you have to include any mathematical equations or chemistry formulae in your slides. The normal keyboard doesn’t contain any keys for math symbols. Furthermore, the sheer number of these symbols used makes it impossible to add any keyboard shortcuts either.

Luckily Google Slides has an inline feature that allows the users to add symbols. You can write pretty much any math equation and formula using symbols provided as part of the “Special Characters” feature in Google Slides . There was a time when you could write equations in Google docs and add that to your Slide but Google has removed that feature.

Another way to add equations in Google slides is using third-party add-ons. There are a few handy add-ons in the Google workspace marketplace for writing mathematical symbols with ease. These add-ons are full of features and very user-friendly. I shall be discussing a couple of the most useful ones later in the article.

For now, let’s understand how to insert a math equation in Google Slides.

How to Insert Math Equations in Google Slides?

As I’ve mentioned above, there are two methods to insert math equations in Google slides. you can use either. You can use mathematical symbols from the built-in feature or you can use add-ons.

Here’s how you can insert math equations in Google Slides using the built-in feature:

  • Insert a “ Text Box ” on a blank slide. Then, double click inside the text box to be in edit mode.

  • Click on Insert > Special characters
  • A dialogue box will appear.

  • Select ‘symbol’ from the left drop-down menu and ‘Maths’ from the right drop-down menu.
  • You can also search for the symbol directly in the search bar. For instance, if you want to add a “greater than equal to” sign, just type that in the search bar.

  • Insert the necessary symbols to write the required math equation.

Pro Tip! To superscript text in Google Slides , simply click on “ Insert ” and choose “ Special Characters ” from the dropdown menu. Then, in the window that pops up, search for “ superscript “. Choose the text you want to superscript.

How to Write Fractions in Google Slides?

When making a presentation on mathematics, writing fractions is inevitable. Writing fractions on Google Slides is one of the easiest things to do. Google has made this feature so easy that you won’t even need to use the special characters feature.

To insert fractions in Google Slides, simply use the oblique (/) sign on the keyboard between the numbers to convert them into a fraction. You can find the oblique key usually located to the left of the right “SHIFT” key on your keyboard.

Let’s take a look at the detailed step-by-step process –

Let’s say we want to write ‘half’. Do do that, just type one (1) from the keyboard, then oblique (/), and then two (2).

Now, press “Space” or “Enter” and it will be automatically written in fraction form and look like this: ½.

Similarly, if you want to write three-fourth or two-third, write the corresponding numbers and symbols sequentially and they will appear in the fraction form.

If you have add-ons and want to use them, you can do that too. Go to the add-ons tab and select the one you want to work with. But I highly recommend just typing in with your keyboard considering how convenient it is.

Is There an Equation Editor in Google Slides?

Currently, there is no built-in equation editor in Google Slides. However, there are multiple equation editor add-ons that are available. Simply go to Add-ons menu>Get add-ons. In the pop-up, search for equation editor (or Math editor), choose the add-on you like and click install.

Most of the equation editors are third-party and free to use. You can find them on Google workspace marketplace by clicking on the ‘plus (+)’ icon from the right-side panel. You will have to sign in with a valid Gmail account. The add-on will seek permission to see various information or data on your account.

But, you won’t have to worry about that. As they are on the Google workspace marketplace, they are verified by Google and usually safe. They are very user-oriented as well.

Best Equation Editor Plugins for Google Slides

There are several add-ons for writing mathematical terms in Google slides. While all of them are quite good, some are the absolute best. Following are the two best equation editors that I’ve found to be the most useful:

1. MathType

MathType is by far the king of equation editor plugins for Google slide. It’s super easy to use. Even if you are a new user, you can easily write any equation you want. There is a separate section for writing chemical formulas. So, if you are a lab geek, MathType has got your back.

It also supports a touchpad. If you are on a touch-enabled device, you can write any equation using your fingers and MathType will recognize it.

2. Hypatia Create

Hypatia Create is loaded with features. It is user-friendly and publication-quality math can be added to your presentation. It has both Google docs and Google slides add-on. It has integration with MathType and Mathpix for a better user experience. You can also use the LaTeX commands to insert equations.

For using add-ons, do the followings:

  • Open or start a new presentation.
  • Click on the plus (+) icon on the right-side panel.
  • Google workplace marketplace window shall appear.
  • Search for your desired add-on from the search bar.
  • Install the add-on.
  • Now go to the ‘Add-ons’ tab.
  • Click on the one you want to work with (if you’ve installed multiple add-ons)
  • Insert equations.

How to Write Chemical Formula in Google Slides?

There isn’t any built-in feature in Google slides to write a chemical formula. However, you can do that easily by using the MathType add-on. follow the steps below:

  • When selecting MathType, go to ‘Insert/edit chem formula.’
  • You will see various chemistry symbols.
  • The symbols are categorized under different tabs such as Symbols, Arrow’s tab, Matrices, and elementary tab, etc.
  • The first tab has a dedicated periodic table.
  • Use the periodic table and the symbols to write your desired equation.
  • You can use the touchpad to write formulas as well.

2 Easy Ways to Insert Equations in Google Slides

While there are no templates to insert equations in Google Slides, you can use the available menu options to do it. And if you’re not up for manually adding the maths equations in your documents, you can also use add-ons from Google Workspace Marketplace to achieve this task. Let’s have a closer look at how to do it.

Note: Ensure you’re signed in to your Google account before proceeding with the steps.

1. Add a Math Equation in Google Slides Using Menu Options

Google Slides come with a set of useful menu options. Using these, you can access the special character’s option to add simple equations and fractions to your presentations. Follow the below steps to do it.

Step 1: Open Google Slides and click on the relevant presentation.

Step 3: Then, click on Special characters. This will open the Insert special characters window.

This will insert the equation in Google Slides. Additionally, if you want to add simple fractions in Google Slides, use your keyboard to do it. Here’s how.

Step 2: In the document, type the upper numerator of your fraction. Then, add the / symbol using your device’s keyboard.

Step 3: Next, add the lower denominator, followed by either the space or the enter key.

2. Use Add-Ons to Add Mathematical Equations in Google Slides

Apart from using the special character option, you can also use the Hypatia Create add-ons to add a math equation in Google Slides. This will allow you to get access to extra features and functionality that might not be available in the native Google Slide menu. Here’s how to do it.

Step 1: Open Google Slides and go to the presentation you wish to add the equation.

Step 2: Then, from the menu options, click on Extensions.

Step 3: Here, click on Add-ons and select ‘Get add-ons’. This will open the Google Workspace Marketplace window.

Then, follow the on-screen instructions and give all the necessary permissions to finish installing the Hypatia Create add-on. Once installed, follow the below steps to use it.

Step 7: Now, click on Extensions. Then, click on Hypatia Create.

Step 8: Here, select ‘Insert/Edit Math’. This will open a separate window.

Step 9: If the pop-up appears, close it and click on the menu options to insert mathematical equations into your presentation. Using this, you can add roots, symbols, and more to your equation.

Here are the steps you need to follow to enter a square root in Google Slides:

2. Now write the square root on the search bar. You will see the square root symbol at the top of the list.

Formulas in Google Slides

Several weeks ago, I had to prepare a presentation. So as I have been running Linux distributions for the last few years, which usually do not have native support of the Microsoft Office packages, I have been using Google Slides to prepare slides for my presentations. In general, I was happy with the functionality provided by this service, but, in the last presentation, I had to add a lot of formulas, and I found out that there is no equation editor provided by Google Slides. Although recently Google has introduced markdown support in its office tools, unfortunately, MathJax , a JavaScript-based display engine, which is usually used to render equations, has not been added as a part of this update.

Of course, as this is such a common task, I thought that it should have been solved. Indeed, there are several Chrome extensions that allow rendering LaTeX equations into figures. However, when I tried to install some of them, I was shocked by the number and criticality of the permissions they requested. Moreover, these extensions do not usually allow you to choose the resolution of a final image. That can be crucial if you try to produce hi-res adapted presentations. Therefore, I developed a custom tool for transforming LaTeX equations into figures. In this article, I describe how to do this. In the Internet, you can find similar solutions, and mine is not a perfect one. However, it fits my needs, and I am writing this article as a memo for future me. Still, I will be glad if my instructions are helpful to somebody else.

Prerequisites

If you follow my articles, you probably already know that I use Kubuntu 20.04 as my operating system. Therefore, all instructions should work on this operating system. If you use other operating systems, you may need to adapt the approach correspondingly.

In Google Slides, you can add formulas if they are rendered to one of the supported image formats. Personally, I prefer png format, therefore, all the instructions will be for this image format. To write equations, we will use LaTeX notation.

To create a formula image from LaTeX, I rely on three utilities:

  • pdflatex - to build a pdf document from LaTeX code;
  • pdfcrop - to crop white margins around a formula;
  • convert - to convert a formula from pdf to png format.

Therefore, you need to install these utilities to use the approach described in this article. pdflatex and pdfcrop utilities are usually a part of a LaTeX distribution. Personally, I use MiKTeX , but you can make use of other LaTeX distributions as well (e.g., TeX Live ). convert is a part of the ImageMagick package.

The following two instructions should prepare your machine for using the approach described in this article:

There are two constituents of the approach: 1) the LaTeX template document where you write a formula; and 2) a bash script that makes use of the utilities described in the previous section to render a formula written in LaTeX into a png image.

At first, let us consider a bash script that is used to do the magic. The source code of the script is provided below:

The code is pretty well-documented. In the “Checks” block, I check if the required utilities are available. Then, in the “Prepare” block, I get the path to the tex file with the formulas, provided as an argument, and store it without extension in the filename variable. Then, we create a temporary directory with a random name where we will store the results of the intermediate conversions.

In the “Conversions” block, we perform the job. First, using pdflatex we convert a file with the formulas into a pdf document. Then, with pdfcrop we remove all whitespace around the formulas. Finally, the convert utility is used to convert the pdf file with the cropped formulas images into a png format. Note that I add - a density option to make the resulting image of high quality.

In the “Cleaning” section, we remove the created temporary repository.

I store this script in the tex2png file, put it into the directory defined in the PATH variable ( ~/bin/ ), and make it executable.

LaTex Document

Now, let us consider how to write formulas. Below, you can find a LaTeX template that you modify with your formulas:

This template is based on a minimal document class and uses three packages: amsmath and amssymb - to write math formulas and use different math symbols, and the preview package - to extract “certain environments (most notably displayed formulas) from LATEX sources as graphics.” The latter is loaded with two options: active - to activate the package (in this case, it will produce previews) and tightpage is necessary to output every formula to a new page so that all formulas in a document can be processed with one shot.

The preamble command \PreviewEnvironment{align*} of the preview package defines an environment used to generate a preview. Note that in this case, only formulas inside the align* environment will be rendered (the formula in the equation* environment will not be rendered). It is possible to configure preview package so that it renders every math formula defined in the equation-related environments (see displaymath option) and even text (see textmath option). For instance, we can modify the previous example to output all the formulas (probably, this LaTeX template will be used the most often):

Stitching Bits Together

Now, using the tex2png script, you can render the formulas from the formulas.tex file into png images. Just run the following command from the directory where you’ve stored formulas.tex file.

As a result, in the same directory, you should get every formula rendered in a separate png file.

Insert Google Sheets Into Google Slides [Easy 2024 Guide]

When you have to give a presentation at work or school, you must remember that making a presentation entails effectively communicating your ideas. The ability to use spreadsheet data in a slideshow, especially one that you can easily update, can certainly help.

Now, if you want to do that, you must learn how to navigate through Google Sheets. So in this article, we will go over how to insert Google Sheets into Google Slides presentations , along with other valuable tips to take advantage of the easy integration.

Why Insert Google Sheets into Google Slides

Among many other platforms, Google Slides has proven to be an instrumental presentation program that only requires a Google Drive account. Although the program itself is straightforward, it’s still packed with many features you can utilize to your advantage, and just like Google Sheets, these features can sometimes be a bit complicated to understand.

You can easily display existing worksheet data without manually entering it by linking a spreadsheet to your Google Slide presentation. This integration has the added benefit of automatically updating the presentation whenever the spreadsheet is modified.

Brief Overview

Adding a Google Sheets chart to your Google Slides presentation is a simple process. There are various ways you can embed a Google Sheet in a Google Slide you have created.

If you end up with a linked table, you can change the data range included in it by clicking on it and then clicking on the link icon in the upper right corner.

By selecting Open Source  from the Linked Options Menu , you can edit the worksheet from Google Slides.

You’ll be prompted to do so if the Google Sheets file has been updated, whether through Google Slides or directly in Google Sheets. A small Update button will appear on the table’s upper right. In order to update your data, you must click on it.

Note, Before You Move On

While a table is linked to Google Slides, anyone with access to the Google Slides file will also have access to the Google Sheets table. It doesn’t matter if the users don’t have permission to access the Google Sheets file. As long as it’s linked, they’ll be able to see it.

You can also add a chart made in Google Sheets when you insert a spreadsheet into Google Slides for your presentation.

Step-By-Step Guide on How to insert Google Sheets into Google Slides

Let’s jump right into the action of adding Google Sheets to Google Slides!

Here are the two methods you can use to import a Google Sheet table or a chart into your Google Slide presentation:

Add a Table

Step 1: Go to the Google Slide you wish to import your table.

Step 2:  Click on Insert, then click on table.

NOTE:  You can select the 1×1 dimension even if your table is larger than that, Google Slides will adjust the size automatically.

Step 3: Go to the Google Sheet from which you want to import the table and select the cell range with the table, right-click, and copy it.

Step 4: Go back to the Slide and paste the table copied from Google Sheets into the 1×1 table in Google Slides.

NOTE:  Remember to click inside the table before pasting. You can either right-click and select paste from the menu or press CTRL+V or CMD+V on a macOS device.

Now, let’s add a chart to this document.

Step 1: Go to the Slide where you want to import the chart.

Step 2: Go to Insert > Chart , and click on From Sheets .

Step 3: Select the Spreadsheet.

Step 4: Select the chart and click on Import.

NOTE:  If ticked, the Link to Spreadsheet box will link the chart in the Google Slide to the chart in Google Sheets. As a result, any changes made to the chart in Google Sheets will also be reflected in Google Slides. If you do not want that, click on the box to untick it, otherwise, click on the box to activate Link to Spreadsheet .

And done! You have successfully added a chart.

Additional Things to Know

Now that we know the ways you can insert Google Sheets into Google Slides, there are still a few things worth noting, the reason a linked Google Sheets file is beneficial is because it allows you to display relevant information on your presentation without the hassle of manually copying data.

The updating option ensures that such data is always up to date in the file itself. The ability to display accurate information will significantly contribute to a well-delivered presentation.

Importing spreadsheet data into a slideshow eliminates the need to copy all that information manually. Furthermore, because Slides does such an excellent job of formatting it, you don’t even need to create the table or chart yourself; it’s all done automatically in seconds and looks exactly like it does in Sheets.

Also, copying and pasting an Excel spreadsheet  may not work as well as a Google Sheet; for one thing, you won’t be able to update the copied version instantly.

Some third-party services will let you link an  Excel spreadsheet  into Slides. However, it’s easier (and more secure) to first paste the Excel sheet’s data into a Google Sheet and link from there.

The next step is to select the spreadsheet containing the chart you want to add. After that, go ahead and Select the chart you want to include. Uncheck Link to spreadsheet  if you don’t want the chart to be linked to the spreadsheet, and lastly Select Import .

How Do I Merge a Google Sheet Into a Google Doc?

If a user wants to merge a Google Sheet into a Google Doc, they must click on a Google Sheet, and then select the Google Sheets file you created earlier from the drop-down menu that appears.

How Do I Fit a Spreadsheet on One Slide in Google Slides?

If you want to fit your Google spreadsheet, On your computer, open a document or presentation in Google Docs or Google Slides. After that, Click Insert Chart. Then click on From Sheets. After you have done that, Click the spreadsheet with the chart you want to add, then click Select. Click the chart you want to add. If you don’t want the chart linked to the spreadsheet, uncheck Link to spreadsheet . Then Click on Import. Thes you should be able to scroll the spreadsheet inside the slide

After going through all the necessary steps on how to insert Google Sheets into Google Slides, and knowing just how and why it is beneficial, you can independently upload your Google Sheets into your Google Slides.

It is also worth noting that because Google Sheets spreadsheets are online, updating what you see in the slideshow is as simple as updating the spreadsheet. Any changes you make to this type of document are reflected everywhere else it’s accessed from, including your Slides files, when you link it.

This means that even though Sheets is being accessed in your slideshow, you can still benefit from its structured format, helpful formulas, and so on. And as mentioned before, whilst you cannot directly copy-paste your Excel file onto your Google Slides, you can still use third-party applications.
