In an academic environment, individuality and expressive freedom are paramount goals. We understand that units desire a distinct visual presentation that captures their uniqueness. However, each unit of the University is an important segment of a greater whole. Therefore, in an effort to present a unified presence, a number of templates were created for Howard University properties.

The design samples are intended to demonstrate a look and feel that can be applied to any form of University communications. These designs illustrate the use of consistent elements and easily identifiable Howard identity. 

Design Request and Approval Process

The Office of University Communication (OUC)  is charged by the Office of the President to review all promotional and marketing materials created for Howard University. OUC is entrusted with ensuring that all market-ing materials represent the University brand well. OUC will review the design, photography, copy, and adherence to the University’s Identity Guidelines in all promotional materials.

Types of Materials

All items used to promote Howard University, to either internal or external audiences, should be submitted to OUC for approval. This includes, but is not limited to:

• advertisements,
• newsletters,
• annual reports,
• recruitment materials,
• invitations,
• postcards and
• promotional give-away items (i.e. mugs, pens, t-shirts).

Promotional materials distributed in an electronic format, such as e-newsletters, should also be submitted.

Approval Process

Email all promotional materials (both for internal and external audiences) for approval prior to being produced or distributed.

Submission Deadline

Largely distributed projects and large publications such as newsletters or magazines should be submitted no later than one week before printing. Items can be emailed to the approvers.

Prior College Approval

Each department, school or college (or other campus equivalent) is responsible for the promotional materials generated within its area. Marketing materials should be approved at the college-level be-fore submission to OUC for final approval. Colleges should ensure that materials have been thoroughly proofread, accurately reflect the University and meet the University’s Identity Guide Standards before submitting. 

Approvers Feedback

OUC will provide approval or feedback within three to five business days of receiving.

Approval must be given prior to printing, manufacturing or distributing. Any use of logos, seals, names or other university marks must be in accordance with policies established by Howard University. The logo or seal may not be used for personal use, e.g. graduation invitations, personal business cards, etc.

Design Checklist

• Howard University Logo or wordmark must have a higher resolution and/or the correct version was not used. Contact OUC for images.
• The University’s logo or wordmark must be added to the front/back cover.
• Photographs must have a higher resolution (300 dpi). It is recommended to contact OUC to obtain higher quality photos.
• Contains multiple grammatical, spelling and/ or punctuation errors. Please revise.
• Too many and/or inappropriate fonts have been used.
• Contact information is missing or formatted incorrectly.
• The  University’s Web site needs to be prominent.
• Does not meet University standards for quality. Contact the Office of University Communications for more information.
• Pages appear cluttered and/or not enough white space.

Oral Presentation Guidelines

• Please arrive 10-15 minutes before your scheduled presentation time.
• Bring your visual presentation on a USB flash drive and be prepared to upload it ahead of time. Do NOT count on retrieving it from the Internet.
• Presentations will be limited to 15 minutes, with an additional 5 minutes for Q&A after each presentation.
• Timing is critical to evaluation. Moderators will notify presenters when there are 5 minutes remaining and when time is up.
• If you plan on using videos, you need to download them on a USB port data stick, as you cannot count on getting on-line. Caution: the use of video footage, including the opening and closing of the link, can take up several minutes of your presentation; make sure you plan for that time in your presentation, and rehearse what you will need to do.
• Keep visuals clear and simple.
• Contrasting colors work best.

Poster Presentation Guidelines

Posters have become an increasingly popular method for presentation of research at scientific meetings, as they promote greater interaction between the researcher and other scientists. A properly constructed poster can be used repeatedly, and become part of a long-term display.

Size Guidelines

The boards being provided are meant to be shared by two presenters on each side. Therefore, please print to no larger than 4 feet wide by 3 feet high. Posters that are larger than this size will be folded to fit and only the visible portion will be eligible for judging.

• Include the abstract title, author name[s], and the institution where the work was completed in large letters at the top of the poster.
• Use headings: Background, Methods, Results, and Conclusions
• Posters should stimulate discussion. Therefore, keep text to a minimum.
• Emphasize graphics and ensure that every item included is necessary.
• Pay attention to the overall visual design of the poster.
• Place related materials (e.g. photo with accompanying text) close together, and group them by framing with blank space or borders.
• Space your information proportionally: divide your poster either horizontally or vertically into three or four sections, and place your materials within those spaces.
• Type size should be at least 36 points for text and at least 20 points for captions. Materials must be easily read at a distance of 4 feet. Small type or carelessly prepared handwritten copy is unacceptable.

Poster Hanging

Thumb pins will be provided for hanging posters.

Presentation Time

Presenters must be at the assigned space during the designated time to discuss the work presented.

Posters that do not have a presenter present during the designated time will be ineligible for judging.

Poster Removal

Please plan to keep your poster up until 4:00 PM on April 26th, 2024.

Interviewing at hucm.

Each year, the Admissions committee conducts interviews with about 300 applicants.

About Interviews

• Interviews are by invitation only.
• Invitations to interview are sent email, approximately three weeks prior to the desired interview date.
• Interviews usually take place between late September through April, usually on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
• A typical interview day will include presentations detailing the HUCM history and mission, an overview of the curriculum, tours, financial aid seminar and lunch with students.
• Interviewees will have at least one 30–45 minute interview with member of faculty.

It is important to us that prospective students “get to know Howard.” Therefore, interviewees should anticipate spending most of the day on campus.

About the conference.

This annual conference brings together scholars, policymakers, business leaders, civil society activists, and Pan-African advocates of various fields of interests and expertise. From the United States to Africa and to the rest of world, researchers, practitioners, corporate and civil society leaders, as well volunteer Pan-African advocates who care about the present and future of Africa and its Diaspora are invited to participate in various ways in the event.

Conference Format

The Howard African Studies International Conference is a hybrid forum that provides an opportunity to explore and reflect on the challenges and opportunities facing Africa in terms of the continent’s economic and sociopolitical development, peace and human security, environmental security, and its relations with the African Diaspora.    There will be a virtual component via Zoom, so that participants based in Africa, Latin America, Caribbean, Europe, Asia, and elsewhere in the global community will be able to take part in the scholarly presentations and discussions. The in-person component will be held on the campus of Howard University in Washington, DC and is expected to further deepen the engagement of scholars in the quest for solutions to key problems facing Global Africa in the 21st century.

Media coverage and streaming of the conference proceedings will help further broaden the engagement of the global audience and sustain the critical reflection on the issues discussed during the conference.

Call for Paper and Panel Proposals

For the 2024 conference, we welcome proposals that are in alignment with the theme of the conference. We are particularly interested in the following sub-themes and welcome proposals on topics related to them:

• Major challenges facing Africa in the twenty-first century.
• Political instability, foreign intrusion, and the quest for peace and security.
• African unity and regional integration toward strategic sovereignty and collective self-reliance.
• Substantive opportunities and prospects that Africa can/must leverage to fully succeed and become a world power in the twenty-first century.
• Women’s self-empowerment and the holistic advancement of the African community.
• The double-edged sword of Africa’s massive youth demographic: How to avoid youth bulge and attain youth dividend.
• Youth empowerment through innovation and entrepreneurship.
• Out of the ivory towers and in the grassroots community: Academic education for effective development in twenty-first century Africa.
• Africa and its multilayered Diaspora: Global Africa in theory and practice.
• The African Union’s Sixth Region in theory and practice.
• Effective people-guided and development-centered leadership and governance in twenty-first century Africa: From aspiration to realization.

We invite individual paper proposals that are in alignment with the sub-themes listed above. Accepted individual papers will be assembled into panels and the corresponding panelists will be informed accordingly. 

Panel propositions should include the sub-theme of the panel and a one-paragraph summary of the panel’s presentation, the list of panelists with their institutional affiliations, the topic on which each panelist will be presenting and a summary of the presentation that each panelist will be making.

The deadline to submit paper and panel proposals is January 25, 2024 .

Acceptance notifications will be sent out by January 31, 2024.

Publication

Papers presented and discussed at the conference will subsequently be peer reviewed and those that will be accepted for publication will be published in the second issue of the Howard Journal of African Studies , the first issue of which is coming out in March 2024.

New Student Orientation (NSO) is designed for all incoming first-year and transfer students to be introduced Howard University, and to provide students and their families the opportunity to learn more about academic support services, student development

All new students are expected to participate in and complete New Student Orientation, which includes Bison Prep, Virtual Howard, and Bison Week.  Our goal is to facilitate a seamless transition to Howard University, so that you immediately acclimate and become a part of the Bison family! Required Placement Exam

Math placement exam.

The Math Placement Exam (MPE) is REQUIRED for all new students who are attending college for the first time (FTIC). Your results on the MPE will determine the math class you will be registered to take in your first semester.  Follow the intructions provided to successfully complete the pre-assessment and exam to ensure that you are placed at the appropriate level of math. 

NOTE: Students who took the MPE as a part of the Karsh STEM Scholars Program (KSSP) requirements are not required to retake it. Your scores have been recorded.

Language Placement Exam

The Language Placement Exam (LPE) is administered in the following languages: Arabic, Chinese (traditional and simplified), Spanish, French, German, Japanese, and Korean. It is administered through AVANT's Placement Assessment program, a web-based test-taking platform. Every student who has studied a language and is planning to take the same language at Howard University is REQUIRED to take the LPE.

Farewell mr. howard: spotlighting a 2024 graduate and changemaker.

Mahlon West, the 47th Mr. Howard University, reflects on his evolution from ‘Baby Bison’ to alumnus as a member of the Class of 2024

As a member of Howard’s COVID class of 2024, Mahlon West, like many other students, has had an untraditional Howard experience. The societal disruption of COVID-19, in which freshmen like West spent their first year at Howard in virtual learning, caused many students to fight for their experience in the time they had left on campus. 

The 2023-2024 Mr. Howard University hit the ground running upon his arrival to campus during his sophomore year. West was unsatisfied with the lack of community at The Mecca fueled by social distancing and virtual classes. 

As a student at Booker T. Washington High School in Atlanta, West was captain of the football team and founded the debate team along with other extracurricular activities. He graduated in 2020 as the valedictorian of his class.  

“When I got to Howard and didn’t have any of these things that I was used to having, I knew I had to do something to make that change,” said West. “I saw a difference in myself because of a lack of community, so I started to look for one on campus.”  

Through his programming as a University representative on the Royal Court, West has hosted a basketball tournament for student entrepreneurs, created Mecca Market – a collective of student owned pop-up businesses – and turned his clothing company ‘Basement Boy’ to a popular student brand on campus.    

“I didn’t have my own room so I used my mom’s basement as a get-away. Me and my best friend would be in the basement making art, music and clothes before we even had the name,” West recalled. “I grew up in an urban area where a lot of my friends didn’t go to college and usually ended up dead or in jail, so Basement Boy was my way to connect with my peers.” 

While West’s job as Mr. Howard University may include perfectly posed photo opportunities, and a good amount of campus celebrity, it has centered around dedication to serving and connecting the Howard community.   

“You can call it popularity, but at the end of the day, students are voting you in a position which is them putting their trust in you,” said West. “If you think you’re going to win a student leadership position of this caliber without being known then that’s doing yourself a disservice...you have to be known in your community for them to trust you enough to put you in this position.”   

West majored in health management and pursued a double minor in business administration and sociology. In addition to his studies and position, West interned at various companies during his time at Howard, including Cricket Wireless, Cerevel Therapeutics, McMaster-Carr, a hardware equipment company, and Gucci.  

West welcomes the next Mr. Howard, Gregory Allen Jr., to continue the legacy this position brings to the school. His advice to future Mr. Howard Universities resonates as advice to all.  

“If you want to make everybody happy, don't be a leader. Sometimes you have to make tough decisions, but it should all be in good faith. It should all be about the entire student body. Lean on your community, be a listening ear above all, and be as creative as you can with solving issues.”

A graduation ceremony for nursing students at Howard University ended abruptly and in chaos after angry family members chanted “Let us in!” and pounded on the doors and smashed a window after being locked out when the auditorium hit capacity.

Loved ones of students in the College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences packed into the Cramton Auditorium in Washington, DC, on Thursday, but not all relatives made it inside the building before the ceremony was abruptly canceled during the keynote address.

Chaotic video footage shows dozens of people standing outside the auditorium chanting “Let us in! Let us in!” as the ceremony began.

Pictures showed a glass door had been shattered during the commotion as people banged on the doors and tried to push past security to go inside.

“While they were doing the keynote speaker, there was, like, loud banging, even before that, for like 10 minutes straight,” graduate Bria Flowers told NBC Washington. “Just like boom, boom, boom, boom, boom.”

School officials told students and their families mid-ceremony that the fire department had come to shut things down.

“Because of the size of the room and because our relatives sometimes do not know how to act, the fire department is now here to shut us down,” Dr. Gina S. Brown, dean of the College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences, said to a roaring response of boos.

However, D.C. Fire and EMS denied shutting down the graduation.

“D.C. Fire and EMS did not shut down tonight’s event,” the department said. “At 6:42 p.m., we responded to the Cramton Auditorium for a medical local at the request of campus police. The patient was evaluated and refused transport, and D.C. Fire and EMS departed.”

Students and their families were left shocked and upset by how quickly things got out of hand.

“I’m confused why it got so crazy, how it got so quick, so bad so fast,” graduate Kiana Hamilton said.

Fellow graduate Halle Ragoonanan said the incident was especially heartbreaking for her and her family because she didn’t get to walk during her high school graduation in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“I didn’t even get to walk,” she said. “I didn’t get to walk. I graduated magna cum laude and I didn’t even get to walk. I’m the class of 2020. I didn’t get to walk for my high school graduation and I didn’t get to walk for my college graduation.”

Other graduates lamented over how much money their families had spent to be there for their special day just for it to be canceled.

“All the money we spent,” an unnamed student told the station. “My father and grandmother came down from North Carolina.”

Howard said security removed someone from the building before the ceremony who returned and smashed the glass door outside the auditorium.

One student was found with cuts on their hands from the broken glass.

“This incident led to a disturbance among guests outside of the facility, resulting in a disruption of the program,” Howard’s statement said. “Guests in attendance were immediately dispersed following this incident.”

Some of the affected students were able to walk in the university’s main commencement ceremony on Saturday, while individual awards were given out to students on Friday.
