Introduction

My pet cat, Jersy is a Maine Coon Cat. It is dark brown and black in colour. She is quite active and playful. She spends most of her time with me and is therefore more affectionate towards me than any of my other family member.

Why we brought Home a Pet Cat?

Many of my friends and neighbours had pets at their home and I also longed to have one. I often told my mother to get home a pup or a kitten and she always dismissed my wish saying she doesn’t have time to look after it.

When my brother went to the hostel for higher studies, I felt quite lonely. My father went to the office and my mother was engrossed in the household tasks most of the times. I did not have anyone to play and felt the need of having a pet all the more. I again requested my parents to get me a pet. Looking at how lonely I had grown ever since my brother had gone to the hostel, they decided to fulfil my wish. I was overjoyed at hearing this. It is then that Jersy came into our lives. It has been with us for over four years now.

My Pet Cat is Playful Yet Disciplined

Jersy is extremely fond of playing while at the same time it is also quite well-behaved. Many cats run around the house breaking things. However, Jersy makes sure she does not cause any such damage. She also takes instructions. My mother serves her lunch at sharp every day. Jersy goes and sits near her feeder around the same time every day. She finishes her food and makes sure it does not spill around.

Jersy has won the heart of all my family members. She awaits my return from the school every afternoon and is delighted to see me back. I am also eager to meet her. We love and enjoy each other’s company.

My Pet Cat Essay 3 (400 words)

I have a pet Siamese cat. I got it as a present from my mother on my 7 th birthday. I had always loved cats dearly and often expressed my wish to pet one. My mother gave me a pleasant surprise by fulfilling it. I have named it Misty. It is cream in colour with grey shade around its ears. It has a fine furry coat that renders beauty to it.

Feeding Misty

Misty is a foodie. It loves eating fish. My mother especially goes to the market twice a week to get fresh fish for my adorable cat. Misty does not only eat raw fish but also relishes fried fish that we often prepare for ourselves. Buying cat food is a fun activity for me. There are many options to choose from and I always accompany my parents to the supermarket to choose different packs of cat food.

Misty loves cat food as much as it loves fish. It especially loves cat food when we mix it with milk. It also loves gulping bowls of plain milk. Milk is something that it can never say no to.

Besides, fish, cat food and milk, Misty also has an eye on what we eat and often demands the same in her own unique way. I love sharing my food with it. Bread dipped in milk and chapatti with butter are some of the other things it relishes. My mother is very particular about giving it food at the right time.

Cleanliness and Hygiene

Siamese cats look beautiful however it takes a bit of an effort to maintain their look. Me and my mother conduct Misty’s bathing session once a month and it is complete fun. My mother also makes sure she combs its coat twice a week to remove dead hair and ensure her hygiene. We also brush her teeth once a week. In winters, we cover it with a coat to protect it from cold.

I love playing with Misty but we mostly play indoors only. When I take it out, I mostly carry it in my arms to protect it from the dirt and dust outside that may cause allergy.

Misty gelled along well almost immediately with me as well as my family members. We had set up a small cat house for it at a cosy corner in our house but it sneaked into my bed the very first day it came home and since then it sleeps besides me. I love spending time with Misty. We are extremely fond of each other.

I told my father about the same and he agreed to bring one home. Molly is 5 years old and has been with us since it was just 2 months. We are all extremely fond of her and she loves us all too. • Its cheeks are chubby and it has small rounded ears.
  • Its eyes are big and full of innocence.
  • It is generally quiet however it also enjoys playing.
  • More than anything it loves sitting in my lap.

Molly has a Pleasant Disposition

Persian cats are considered to be the most beautiful cats in the world and Molly is no exception. It is a treat for the eyes. Her behaviour is as good as her looks. She is very warm and friendly. She did not take long to mingle with me and my family members. She does not detest the entry of anyone in the home. However, she is often quite indifferent towards our guests. She creeps into a quiet corner in our house when some unfamiliar person arrives.

My mother never wanted to keep a cat as a pet however she is glad that we brought Molly home. She has grown quite fond of this tiny little creature over the time just like my father and grandparents. She takes care of all her needs.

Molly’s Grooming and Feeding

Molly has long white hair which make her look beautiful but we also require taking care of it. We make sure we bathe her once a week to keep her hair clean and tidy. My Pet Cat Essay 5 (600 words)

I have a black coloured cat as a pet. We call it Brenda. It has short hair and a glossy coat. It is five years old and has been with us ever since it was born. It loves having milk and bread. We treat it with fish occasionally and it simply loves its taste. Brenda is very playful and loving.

How Brenda (my pet cat) Became a Part of My Life?

I had always been a big admirer of cats. I always thought that I would pet a couple of cats when I grow old. However, I had never planned of keeping one as a pet in my childhood years. Keeping Brenda as a pet was not planned.

My mother always kept a bowl of water in the garden to quench the thirst of birds and animals during summers. Besides a number of sparrows and pigeons, a few cats also came and drank water from that bowl quite often. One of these cats gave birth to four kittens under our cooler that was kept in the garden. The cat as well as kittens stayed at that place for around ten days. We placed a bowl of milk to feed them every day.

One morning we saw that the cat and three kittens had gone and only a black coloured kitten had been left behind. I kept some food and milk for it. The cat never came back to take its kitten and it continued to live under the cooler. I and my brother soon grew quite fond of it. We decided to pet it. We took permission from my father and got its vaccinations done. My mother allowed it inside the house after the vaccinations were done and it became a part of our family.

Special Cat House in My Garden

As much as I had fancied having a cat, I had been equally enthusiastic about setting up a beautiful cat house at my place. I often saw pictures of cat houses on the internet and wished to install one of those at home some day. So, when we decided to keep Brenda, I expressed my wish to bring her a beautiful cat house. I already had a good idea about the different types of cat houses available in the market. I sat with my brother to shortlist the best one for our loving Brenda. It was delivered to our place in two days and we placed it under a shady tree in our garden. Brenda was quite excited to see her new shelter. It loves the colourful house and enjoys sitting inside it for hours.

Black Cats are not Ominous

Many people consider black cats are ominous. People usually do not like to pet black cats. This is not only because these are considered ominous but also because these cats don’t look as beautiful as the white and fawn ones. My mother was also quite sceptic about keeping Brenda initially. However, I convinced her and she agreed.

It has been five years that Brenda has been with us and we have not faced any uncanny experience as we should have going by the myths. This is a proof that black cats are not ominous. We must not disregard them because of the myths that have been around for centuries. Black cats need our love and affection as much as any other cats.

Brenda came into our life by chance but is now an inseparable part of our family. I and my brother are especially fond of it. Brenda eagerly awaits our return from the school every day and also looks forward to our holidays. It seems quite delighted and cheerful during our holidays. We love her company too.

My Favorite Pet Essay:

‘ve always been an animal lover, but there’s one pet that holds a special place in my heart – my furry little best friend, Max. He may not be the most exotic or unique pet out there, but to me, he’s one of a kind.

Max is a small brown and white mixed breed dog with floppy ears and big, soulful eyes. He may not have the majestic appearance of a lion or the rareness of a hedgehog, but what he lacks in looks, he more than makes up for in personality.

I remember the day I found Max at the shelter like it was yesterday. His tail wagged excitedly as I approached his cage, and when I knelt down to pet him, he licked my face with eager affection. I knew right then and there that he was the one for me.

Since that day, Max has been my faithful companion through thick and thin. Whether I’m happy or sad, he’s always by my side, ready to offer a cuddle or a lick on the cheek. His goofy antics never fail to make me laugh and his unconditional love is a constant source of comfort.

As cliché as it may sound, Max has truly become a member of my family. He’s more than just a pet; he’s my confidant, my therapist, and my partner in crime. I couldn’t imagine life without him.

I may have had other pets before Max, but there will never be another like him. He’s my favorite pet, and I know that no matter how many years pass, he will always hold a special place in my heart. So here’s to you, Max – thank you for being the best companion a person could ask for.

I couldn’t resist picking him up and taking him home with me. From that moment on, Whiskers became a part of my family.

As a kitten, Whiskers was very playful and mischievous. He loved to pounce on anything that moved and chase after toy mice. I had to baby-proof my house to keep him out of trouble!

But as he grew older, Whiskers mellowed down and became more affectionate. He would curl up on my lap and purr contently, enjoying a good cuddle session. He also loved to follow me around the house, always curious about what I was doing.

Whiskers is now a fully grown cat, but he’s still full of personality. He has his own preferences when it comes to food and toys, and he loves to make his presence known by meowing loudly when he wants attention.

Having Whiskers as a pet has taught me so much about responsibility and unconditional love. He may just be a cat, but to me, he’s my best friend and companion.

I can’t imagine my life without Whiskers by my side. He brings so much joy and laughter into my home, and I am grateful to have him as a part of my family. I hope our bond will continue to grow stronger with each passing day.

If you’re considering getting a pet cat, just remember that they may be small in size but they have big personalities and even bigger hearts. They truly make the best companions and can bring so much love into your life. So go ahead and give a shelter cat a forever home, just like I did with Whiskers. Trust me, you won’t regret it

Essay On Cat

There are three different types of cats: domestic cats, farm cats, and feral cats. People all across the world love to pet house cats. In various customs and cultures, such as the Japanese culture, cats are revered. Cats are smart animals. They are expert hunters of snakes, rats, etc. Cats are extremely slothful pets; they sleep for lengthy periods of time each day and are kind to those they know and trust. Cats are not particularly sociable. Its child is known as a "kitten." The same family as tigers and panthers includes cats. Cats are omnivores because they eat both plants and animals for food.

The face of a cat is lovely, with a little nose, a large mouth, and some whiskers under the nose. Although they can also be brown, black, grey, cream, or buff, cats are often white in colour.

Food Habits | Cats are omnivorous. They consume fish, meat, fowl, mice, rice, milk, and other vegetative foods in addition to these animal foods. Cats can therefore eat both sorts of food.

Hunting Skills | Cats are not only smart and affectionate but also skilled hunters. They kill creatures, including snakes, mice, and small birds, using their sharp, pointed nails and canines (teeth).

Offsprings | Cats’ offsprings are referred to as ‘kittens’. Cats are incredibly nurturing and guarding of their young. The kittens are raised and fed by them. Kittens are incredibly cute and tiny. Sometime after birth, their eyes open. They have a lot of energy, and they enjoy playing with one another and cuddling with their parents.

Good Pets | Cats are beneficial to their owners because they keep rats out of the house. This is one of the reasons why cats make good pets. Cats are extremely slothful animals. They typically spend their days sleeping and taking naps in warm locations. The pace of life for cats is leisurely. They are not particularly spirited animals, and whenever they are exhausted, they yawn quite cutely. If cats trust people, they can make excellent buddies with them. Cats want to sleep near people because they are warm.

There were 480 million stray cats and 220 million owned cats in the globe as of 2021, according to estimates. With 95.6 million domestic cats owned and 42 million households having at least one cat, domestic cats were the second most common pet in the United States as of 2017. In the UK, 10.9 million cats are thought to be kept as pets, with 26% of adults in the country having one. I keep a fluffy white pet cat as a pet.

Features Of Cats | Although all cats appear to be the same, there are more than 55 different cat breeds. They have excellent night vision, and their flexible bodies make it simple for them to leap from one place to another. They can easily locate the milk because of their keen sense of smell.

Domestication Of Cats | Cats were revered in ancient Egypt starting around 3100 BC. Therefore it was long believed that the domestication of cats started there. However, more recent discoveries in archaeology and genetics have revealed that the domestication of cats actually started in Western Asia around 7500 BC. Later on, Egyptian wildcats contributed to the domestic cat's maternal gene pool.

Breed Development | Cat breed development began in the middle of the 19th century. According to genomic research of domestic cats, the DNA of their wild ancestors underwent significant change during domestication as particular mutations were chosen to create different cat breeds. Most breeds originated from household cats that were randomly bred. These breeds' genetic diversity varies by area and is lowest in purebred populations, which have over 20 harmful genetic illnesses.

My parents made the decision to bring me a pet because I am a single child. I immediately decided on a cat when they asked if I wanted a dog or a cat. My heart raced as my father drove me to a pet store because of this adorable white kitten with grey ears. Since we brought it home, it has been my closest companion. Its name is Rosie.

Rosie has been living with us for the past two years and has integrated herself into our family. I enjoy using it for play. Every evening I play with it in the house and also take it to the park. With my mother's assistance, I bathe it twice a month. Rosie and I both have a lot of fun when we take baths. Every day, my mother makes a point of combing Rosie's hairy coat. Rosie has her own set of combs, brushes, shampoo, and soaps. Her diet is likewise well-cared for by us. For her, we bring a special cat meal home. I cherish my beloved cat.

Although we cannot completely replace humans, my cats still adore me, and I adore them. We play together and engage in a variety of activities that bring joy to both of us. If you've ever kept a cat as a pet, as I did, you'll understand. I adore and appreciate being around my cat. Rosie is lovely, playful, and happy.

Best Tips On How To Write An Essay On My Pet For Classes 1, 2 & 3

Shaili Contractor

Key Points to Remember When Writing an Essay on ‘My Pet’ for Class 1, 2 and 3 Children

Few lines on ‘my pet’ for children, short essay on ‘my pet’ for kids, long essay on ‘my pet’ for kids in english, what will your child learn by writing an essay on pets.

Growing up with a pet is the most wonderful experience. Having a constant buddy around to play with, children are most excited about having a pet at home. In fact, it is often the children who plead with their parents to adopt and bring home a pet. The pets, too, form a close sibling-like bond with the children of the house. So when it comes to writing about their pets, children will have several ideas to pen down. Let’s help them organise their thoughts and feelings and write an essay that will be engaging for the reader. Most children will be confident about this topic but may need a structure to help them articulate their ideas. There may also be some children who don’t have pets of their own and may have to write this essay from their imagination. These tips will help children write a few lines, small compositions and long essays on the topic of ‘My Pet’.

Children who have a pet may be full of ideas in their minds. But those who don’t have a pet at home will have to write based on their experience with someone who has pets, maybe a friend or a relative. When guiding a child on how to write an essay on pets, there are a few things you can ask them to incorporate in the write-up. Here are some key points that could help them write an impressive essay:

  • Start with an introduction about how animals are important to humankind.
  • Progress to the next step by stressing how bringing home a pet can be a different experience and contribute to one’s well-being.
  • Go on to describe which animal would be ideal to have as a pet.
  • Describe the qualities of the animal and how they came into your life.
  • Elaborate on the pet – name, behaviour and qualities.
  • Mention how you look after them and care for them.
  • Speak about how you spend time with the pet and the facilities you have made for the pet to feel safe at your home.
  • Speak about how popular the pet is in the neighbourhood.
  • Write about who the pet is closest to.
  • Conclude by stressing the importance of the pet’s presence at home and how it completes the family.

A short essay on ‘My Pet’ for a first-grader would entail writing a few descriptive lines about the pet. Here’s is an example of how to help your child write a few lines on the topic:

  • The pet I have is a dog, a man’s best friend.
  • We call him ‘Rafa’.
  • Rafa is a Labrador and white in colour and has a bushy tail with a black tip.
  • He eats pet food that we buy especially for him from the supermarket.
  • We have trained him to perform some actions like “Sit”, “Fetch the Ball,” and “Shake hands.”
  • We have a small kennel for him where he rests during the day when we are all away at school.
  • Once we come back home, we take him for a walk around our apartment complex.
  • He is the star of the apartment as everyone loves him. He is also playful with them.
  • Rafa is also our watchdog as he keeps a close eye on strangers who enter the apartment.
  • My dog is a part of my family, and we love him very much.

Students of class 2 are expected to display a higher level of writing proficiency. By now, children are familiar with linguistic aspects of English like grammar, punctuations and spelling. When asked to write about their pet, they would be required to compose a paragraph on the topic that would carry more weightage in terms of marks or points awarded. Here is a sample of an essay on ‘My Pet’ for Class-2 students:

A pet is like a family member. Having a pet is more like looking after a child, but pets cannot speak. If you shower them with love and affection, they will be most affectionate and loyal to you. My family and I always wanted a pet, so we got a cat. We call him ‘Tom’. Black and white in colour, Tom has a long tail that he curls when he’s hungry or wants us to cuddle him. We feed him pet food from a small bowl that we got for him. We take him for walks around our small bungalow, during which he loves climbing on our walls. Tom loves chasing mice and is scared of the dogs around our house. We love spending time with Tom, and he loves us too.

Children in the third grade will generally be expected to write a long essay on their pets. This might sound challenging but let’s make it simple for them. Guide them to split the topic into various points and then elucidate their thoughts to compose a long paragraph. Here’s a guide that will help your child write a long essay on ‘My Pet’.

Dogs are a man’s best friend. It is indeed true as dogs are the most loyal and friendly animals. My parents also love dogs. They both have had dogs as pets when they grew up. So, when we moved into our new home, the first thing that we did after setting up the house was to go and get a puppy.

We reached the animal rescue centre, and our eyes fell on a little puppy who was just two weeks old. It was a Golden Retriever, and we got him home immediately. We named him Marco and set up a kennel for his home. We placed him there and looked after him for the next few weeks till he became comfortable. Once he started moving and jumping around, he followed us just like every other puppy. He would wag his tail if he wanted to go out or just jump on us if he wanted to fall asleep.

Every night my father takes him out for a walk. Marco enjoys this time with my father and eagerly looks forward to it. Just when I am going to be back from school, Marco waits behind the door for me. As I enter, he jumps all over me to welcome me home. He gives my mother a cuddle when he finds her relaxing on the chair when she is tired. Marco is a part of our family, and we love him very much. He has made us better human beings by showing his affection through actions and words.

Writing an essay on ‘My Pet’ will help children understand how to express their thoughts about a pet and write in a manner that will make an impact. Expression, writing creatively, and structuring are the most important takeaways from this essay. Children will also get a deeper understanding of caring for animals. The ones who don’t have a pet at home will be encouraged to think creatively and write based on their observations and imagination.

Encourage your child to follow these tips and read through these essays before writing their own essay on their pet. This beginner’s guide will help children channelise their ideas and ace the skill of essay writing. Children will learn the depth and nuances of creative writing, which will help them not just in the English subject but other subjects too.

250 Words Essay on My Pet Cat

My pet cat, Whiskers, has been my companion for the past five years. She’s a British Shorthair with a thick, plush coat of bluish-grey fur and large round golden eyes. Her presence has significantly impacted my life, teaching me about companionship, empathy, and the intricate balance of nature.

The Bond We Share

Whiskers and I share an unspoken bond. She seems to understand my moods and emotions, offering a comforting presence when I’m feeling down. Her soft purring and gentle nuzzling act as a soothing balm, helping me navigate through stressful times. This bond has deepened my understanding of empathy, making me more aware of the emotions of those around me.

Lessons from Whiskers

Observing Whiskers has taught me a lot about the natural world. Cats, being both predator and prey in the wild, have evolved unique survival strategies. Watching Whiskers’ alertness and agility, her instinctive hunting behaviors, has given me a profound appreciation for the complexity of nature and the interconnectedness of life.

Whiskers and Responsibility

Having Whiskers has also taught me responsibility. She relies on me for food, shelter, and care. This dependency has instilled in me a sense of duty and commitment. It has taught me the importance of caring for others, a lesson that extends beyond just pet ownership.

In conclusion, my pet cat Whiskers is more than just a pet; she is a teacher, a companion, and a reminder of the beautiful intricacies of life. The lessons I’ve learned from her have shaped my perspective, making me a more empathetic, responsible, and nature-conscious individual.

500 Words Essay on My Pet Cat

Cats, known for their mysterious yet endearing nature, have been companions to humans for thousands of years. As a college student, my pet cat, Whiskers, has been an integral part of my life, providing companionship, emotional support, and countless moments of joy.

Whiskers: A Unique Personality

Whiskers is not just a pet but a family member with a unique personality. She is an orange tabby, with a coat that gleams like the setting sun. Her green eyes are always full of curiosity, reflecting her adventurous spirit. Whiskers is independent, yet affectionate, embodying the paradox that often characterizes the feline species. She spends her days exploring the house, hunting for imaginary prey, and taking long, luxurious naps.

The Emotional Bond

The bond I share with Whiskers transcends the usual pet-owner relationship. She has been my confidante, my stress-buster, and my silent companion through the ups and downs of college life. When I’m swamped with assignments, her presence by my side is a calming influence. Her purring is a soothing sound that helps me focus and her playful antics provide much-needed breaks.

Life Lessons from Whiskers

Observing Whiskers, I’ve gleaned several life lessons. Her independence has taught me the importance of self-reliance. Just as she navigates through life with a sense of curiosity, I’ve learned to approach my studies and future career with the same attitude. Her hunting instincts remind me of the importance of perseverance, while her ability to find joy in simple things, like a stray beam of sunlight or a crumpled piece of paper, inspires me to appreciate the small joys in life.

Responsible Pet Ownership

Being a pet owner also comes with responsibilities. I’ve learned to balance my time to ensure Whiskers gets the attention she needs. Regular vet visits, a balanced diet, and plenty of exercise are essential for her well-being. I’ve also made efforts to create a safe environment for her, which includes making sure that common household items that can be harmful to cats are out of her reach.

In conclusion, having Whiskers as my pet cat has enriched my life in ways I couldn’t have imagined. It’s not just about the companionship she offers, but also the life lessons she imparts. As I navigate through the complexities of college life, Whiskers remains a constant source of comfort, joy, and inspiration. She is a testament to the profound bond that can exist between humans and their feline companions, a bond that is built on mutual respect, shared experiences, and unconditional love.

That’s it! I hope the essay helped you.

Essay On My Pet Cat

  • Post category: Essay
  • Reading time: 4 mins read

Animals and birds are the friends of mankind. We get milk from animals like cows , buffalo, goats,s, and sheep. Dogs guard our fields and our houses. Pets like parrots, pigeons, rabbits, and cats give us joy and happiness. We like to keep pets as per one’s needs and likings. All my friends have some of the other pets.

I also have a pet cat . She is a cute little bundle of white and black color. Her eyes are blue and shiny. We all call her Rani. She comes running to me whenever I call her. Rani is purely vegetarian. Every day I feed her bread, milk, and biscuits. I. bathe her regularly with soap and lots of water.

She is very obedient. I take her to the garden every evening. I play with her. We run, we jump. She expresses her happiness by shaking her tail and by making various sounds. Rani wanders freely inside the house. But she never spoils the eatables. She becomes conscious whenever she rings, then she runs towards the main door to welcome us.

Sometimes she catches a mouse and then runs out of the house. Usually, the dog is an enemy of a cat. But Rani is so brave that she threatens the dogs. During winter she goes to the terrace and licks herself with her tongue. During summer she rests either Sien below the sofa or the bed. I like Rani very much. She is very calm and quiet. I usually take her with me whenever I am going out. I miss her very much if I do not see her for a day or two.

Essay on Cat | My Favourite Pet & Animal

March 19, 2018 by Study Mentor Leave a Comment

Cats are most popular pets in the world. Cats have been nearly 10000 years as a pet animal.  Cats help us with more than 1000 species of animals, including snakes, rats and other animals. It is very easy to train the cats because they are quick learners. The cat sounds like meow.

According to one survey in America 69 million cats are there as pets. Cats take second place as pets where dogs have the first place. The origin of the cats is African wild cat.

Few people kept cats to help them to find the mouse in their farms. Where others kept them as friendly and good companions. The Egyptians kept cats as their main pet animal. They believe cats as gods.

The English word ‘cat’ is a Latin word Catus. A group of cats is referred to as cloud or glitter, a male cat called tom or comet, a monotonous woman called the queen. We call small cats as kittens.

Different breeds having different types of hair, like long hair, short hair, and hairless breeds. Nowadays special foods are available for cats in all developed countries. Right food will help to cats live longer.

Table of Contents

Cats have excellent night vision and can only see the one-sixth level of human need for human vision. Cats have excellent hearing and can detect the most extensive frequencies. Can hear more-pitched sounds than dogs or humans.

Cats have relatively few taste buds compared to humans (470 or more than 9,000 in human language). Indigenous and wild cats share genetic mutations to contain sugar molecules, including their sweet taste buds, which do not have a sweet taste. Instead, their taste buds react to amino acids, bitter taste, and acids.

The average lifespan of pets has grown in recent years. In the 1980s, it was seven years, rising 9.4 years in 1995, and in 12-15 years in 2014.

Several kinds of health problems, including parasites, bruises, chronic disease, can affect cats. Many diseases are available for vaccines, and indigenous cats regularly provide treatments to eliminate parasites such as worms.

The pet cats are similar to other members of Felice, usually with 4 and 5 kg weight. Some species occasionally more than 11 kg. On the opposite, very small cats, less than 2 kg, have been reported. The largest cat to the world record 21 kg. The officially recorded smallest cat is weighed 1 kg.

Outdoor cats are active in the night, the time of kittens activity is quite simple and varied, meaning home cats are more active morning and evening, in response to more human activities at this time. The daily duration of sleep is typically between 12 to 16 hours and the average time is around 12 to 14 hours.

Some cats sleep for up to 20 hours. The term cat nap refers to the sleeping cat’s sleep for a short period of time (lightly) sleeping. When falling asleep, cats sleep rapidly with sleeping eye movements often with muscle holes, which suggest they dreams.

Communication

Tail and ears are important social signal systems, especially in cats. For example, the increased tail deals with a friendly greeting, and the flat ears represent animosity.

The development of a basic advantage as a signaling mechanism between mother and cats and nursing kittens emerged. The cats breaking mechanism is unclear. The cat does not have a specific body structure that is clearly responsible for the sound.

Cat

Domestic cats, especially young cats, are known for their love of play. This behavior varies in hunt and kittens are important to help kill the twigs, the capture, and the hunt.

Cats engage in fighting the game with one another and with humans. This behavior may be a way of achieving the skills needed for a real war, and they can reduce any fears when launching attacks on other animals.

Due to the close similarity between drama and hunting, cats like to play with animals such as small fur-dolls, but lose interest in the toy they have played quickly (they get used to). Toys are more common when cats are hungry.

Cats can bite humans when induced, during play or aggression. The cat bite is different from other pets. This is because cat teeth are sharp and deeper.

Cats can transmit viruses, bacteria, fungus, protozoa, arthropods or mites to humans. In some cases, the cat does not show any symptoms for this disease, although the same disease is clearly visible in man.

The risk of a person being infected depends on the age of the person and the immune system. Most of the infections occurring are salmonella, cat scratch disease, and toxoplasmosis.

His colour is golden and his tail is bushy as he is a golden retriever. Chandler is very energetic and likes to play a lot with all of us. He runs extremely fast when chasing cats. He is very playful. We take good care of his diet. I give him foods like eggs, meat, fish, bread, rice, etc. Whenever I return from school, he wags his tail in joy and jumps and hops all around me as if celebrating. Chandler knows everybody in our family and whenever he sees a new person, he barks at them, but he is sweet and does not bite anyone. He is very intelligent as well and gives us handshakes with his paws. He understands whatever we tell, and on command, he sits and rolls over too. He is an essential part of our family and we all love him very much.

Essay on My Pet in 250 words

My pet dog is a Golden Retriever and his name is Cheddar. He is named after a dog seen on the famous sitcom “Brooklyn 99”. Cheddar is a very energetic and playful dog. He likes to go on walks a lot and play with frisbees and balls. My dad brought him home a year ago. Although I somewhat wanted a cat, now I love him the most. Bella, my sister is crazy about dogs, she wanted a dog since time immemorial. At first, our mother was sceptical about getting a pet, but now Cheddar is her favourite. She treats him just like the way she treats us.

My sister is particular about his timely vaccinations, eating habits, cleanliness, etc. She bathes him twice a week and every evening, we take him out for a stroll in the neighbourhood as well as the park. As mentioned before, Cheddar is quite active. Hence, we play with him in the park a lot. We throw a ball or a frisbee and play a game of fetch with him. He likes to roll in the leaves and it is fun to watch him do so. Along with being active, Cheddar is smart as well. At home, when his food is served, as long as we don’t say the word “go” he patiently waits. On command, he jumps and shakes hands with us using his paw. When told, he can roll over too. He amuses us with his daily fetching of random things like slippers, or one of his toys. We love him with all our heart and he has become an essential member of our family.

Essay on My Pet in 300 words

My pet’s name is Mario. He is a two-year-old German Shepherd. I was in 6th grade when my father brought Mario home when he was just 45 days old. His cute little face was so fluffy I could just hug and kiss him all day. I bought a soccer ball, with which he and I used to play all day long. Being in school, I used to think about what is he doing right now or today I’ll take him for a walk to the park, where we will play soccer, etc.

His unconditional love has always been there as a stress reliever. His loyalty, unwavering support and companionship have been with me in my good and bad times. Now that he is an adult, I have taken all his responsibilities like feeding him, bathing him, taking him for walks, etc.

Mario once fell ill due to a cold, and whatever he was eating, he was not able to digest it. I got s worried that I took him to the vet, where he was given a penicillin shot as an antibiotic treatment. I was so scared that I held him with my hands and he was lying there, unconscious. Two hours later, he gained his consciousness and started licking my face. All my sorrow and sadness vanished away in a second, seeing his beautiful eyes and fluffy tail wavering all over the table.

Now that he is completely healthy, I take him for his walks every day, where he is always filled with excitement to explore the other world. As a loyal friend, my dog, Mario, has never demanded anything except for 3 times of meals and a walk. Whether it’s a game of fetch in the backyard or a stroll in the park, every shared moment is a treasure that adds richness to my life.

I have a pet dog and his name is Chandler. He is named after my favourite “Friends” character and has been with us for the last nine months. He is an essential part of our family and we all love him a lot.

Both cats and dogs make wonderful pets, each offering unique qualities that appeal to different people. Cats are generally more independent animals. Dogs are social animals that thrive on companionship. They usually need more attention, exercise, and social interaction.

Dogs are known as the best friends of humans because they bring loyalty, joyous moments, unconditional love and life-teaching lessons. Some of the best dog breeds for domestication are German Shepherd, Siberian Huskey, Golden Retriever, Labrador, Beagle and Boxer.

My Pet Cat Essay 1 (200 words)

I have a white coloured, soft and furry pet cat. It is a Himalayan Cat. These cats are known for their soft furry coats and that is what attracted me too.

Since I am a single child, my parents decided to get me a pet. They asked me if I wanted a dog or a cat and I instantly chose the latter. My father took me to a pet shop and my heart went pounding for this cute little white kitten with grey ears. We brought it home and since then it has been my best friend. I have named it Rosie.

Rosie is there with us since the last two years and has become a part of our family. I love playing with it. I play with it in the house and also take it out in the park every evening. I bathe it twice a month with the help of my mother. Bathing sessions are super fun for me as well as Rosie. My mother makes it a point to comb Rosie’s furry coat every day. We have a separate set of combs, brushes, shampoo and soaps for Rosie. We also take good care of her diet. We bring home special cat food for her. I love my pet cat.

My Pet Cat Essay 2 (300 words)

Introduction.

My Pet Cat Essay 4 (500 words)

I have a Persian cat as a pet. We call it Molly. I had seen one such cat at my neighbour’s place and just loved the way it looked. I also wanted to pet one. I told my father about the same and he agreed to bring one home. Molly is 5 years old and has been with us since it was just 2 months. We are all extremely fond of her and she loves us all too. She is particularly fond of me.

The Features of My Pet Cat

  • Molly is pure white in colour.
  • It has long hair that are super soft and a delight to touch. However, its furry hair requires a lot of grooming. It needs to be combed gently every day.
  • It has a small, round face and a snub nose.

I love shopping for Molly’s bathing products. My mother conducts her bathing sessions and I also love helping her with it. Molly remains quiet during this time and lets us clean it thoroughly.

We comb its hair everyday to keep them smooth. It is done with the help of a special wide-tooth comb. Molly loves it when my mother runs comb through her hair. It sits in her lap to get it done.

Molly loves eating fish. We give her fish twice a week. On other days, my mother gives her cat food. We have fixed her lunch and dinner time and serve her food at the same time every day. Molly also loves having milk. She finishes her bowl of milk very quickly and often demands for more.

Molly is an inseparable part of our family. I love spending time with it. We also take her along on outings. She is well-behaved and thus it doesn’t seem difficult to take her along on holidays.

My Pet Cat Essay 5 (600 words)

I have a black coloured cat as a pet. We call it Brenda. It has short hair and a glossy coat. It is five years old and has been with us ever since it was born. Loves having milk and bread.

500+ Words Essay on My Pet Dog

Pets are a great blessing in anyone’s life. They are the only ones who love us unconditionally. Pets always offer us everything they have without asking for anything in return. The main aim of any pet’s life is to make their owner happy. Nowadays, even the term ‘owner’ is changing. People prefer their pets as kids and to themselves as parents. This is how the relationship between pets is evolving. People treat them no less than humans. For instance, they celebrate their birthdays; get those matching outfits and more.

In my opinion, I feel the pets rightly deserve it. The most common pet you can find at anyone’s place is dogs. A man’s best friend and the most faithful animal, a dog. I also have a pet dog that I love to bits. We got him when he was a little baby and have watched him grow into a beautiful dog. All my family members love him with all their heart. We love his silly antics and cannot imagine our lives without him. We named him Sasha.

Sasha – My Pet Dog

My father adopted Sasha when he was a little baby. His friend had given birth to puppies and they decided to put the puppies up for adoption. We convinced our father to get one for us. Considering they knew our family well, they immediately agreed. Little did we know that our lives would change forever after his entrance.

Essay on My Pet Dog

Sasha came in like a blessing for our family. He belongs to the breed of Labrador. Sasha was black in colour, pure coal black. He came in as a puppy with his cute little paws and eyes. We couldn’t stop gushing over this beauty. My siblings used to fight with each other as to who will get the maximum time to play with Sasha.

As and when Sasha grew up, he learned various tricks. We trained him to follow our instructions and he even learned a few tricks. We loved showing him off to our colony friends and relatives. I always took Sasha out with me as he loved taking a walk on the road.

Furthermore, my siblings and I took on the responsibility of keeping Sasha clean. Every week, we took turns to bathe him and brush him nicely. I remember I even got a bow for him from my pocket money. Sasha loved it and wagged his tail in excitement. Sasha has been with us through thick and thin and we will forever be indebted to him for his loyalty.

A Changed Life

Before having a pet dog, we didn’t know what all we would experience. After Sasha came into our lives, he changed it forever. Sasha changed the meaning of loyalty for us. We learned how this faithful animal always worked for our happiness and safety.

Certainly, Sasha made us better human beings. We are now more compassionate towards animals. There was one instance where the stray dogs were going to harm a kitten, and to our surprise, Sasha saved that little kitten and got her home.

In other words, we have learned a lot of things from Sasha. He protected us when we slept at night. He tried to cheer us up whenever anyone of us was sad. Sasha’s obedience inspired me a lot to be kind to my parents. Therefore, all the credit for changing our lives goes to Sasha.

Bird flu can infect cats. what does that mean for their people.

Raw milk, raw meat and dead birds may all be sources of infection

A calico kitty holds a dead bird in her mouth and doesn't look like she's one bit sorry about it.

Cats are well-known predators of birds, but catching a wild bird may expose kitty to H5N1 bird flu, which can be deadly to felines.

Cats are getting — and dying of — bird flu. That’s sparking worries about the risk that the ongoing outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza poses for these feline furballs and their owners.

This outbreak has been sickening and killing wild birds and poultry in the United States since 2021 ( SN: 5/16/24 ). H5N1 has also jumped into a wide variety of mammals , including farm animals such as goats, dairy cattle and, most recently, four alpacas in Idaho ( SN: 3/6/23; SN: 4/3/24 ).

When bird flu viruses infect mammals, the viruses can get random mutations that help them replicate better in mammalian cells. That raises the possibility that the avian influenza could adapt to spread easily in people.

There’s no sign that the virus has developed the type of changes needed to transmit easily from person-to-person yet, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported May 24. Most people who have gotten infected so far have been those with close contact with poultry or cattle.

But having bird flu show up in domestic cats might give the virus a more intimate route for infecting people. After all, people don’t usually cuddle chickens and cows the way they do kitties.

Here’s what is and isn’t known about H5N1 bird flu in cats and other common pets.

How do cats get bird flu?

Outdoor cats may get infected after catching wild birds, says Meghan Davis, a veterinarian and environmental epidemiologist at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. “Whether they eat them or not, that could be sufficient contact.”

The diet people feed their pets could also put cats at risk. “Raw meat diets, and specifically raw poultry diets , have been associated with some of these cases,” she says.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has found viral particles in muscle and other tissue from a dairy cow that was being culled, the agency said May 24. None of the meat entered the food supply, but the incident highlights that raw beef might contain the virus. (For anyone worried about their summer cookout, cooking burgers spiked with H5N1 to 145° Fahrenheit (medium) or higher was enough to inactivate the virus, the agency says.)

Water, footwear or equipment contaminated with bird droppings also might be potential sources of infection, according to the World Organization for Animal Health.

And now, raw milk — milk that hasn’t been pasteurized to kill bacteria and viruses — has become an avenue for infection after H5N1 showed up in dairy cattle. Raw milk, some of which is labeled for pet use only, could be a way that indoor cats that don’t have contact with wild birds or poultry could get infected, Davis says.

Some evidence suggests that cats might be able to pass the infection to each other, she says.

Can cats die of bird flu?

Yes. Death rates from H5N1 infections in cats appear to be high.

This year alone, more than 16 cats in the United States are known to have contracted H5N1 bird flu, most of them on dairy farms, according to the World Organization for Animal Health. At least four have died. In 2022 and 2023, at least 13 cats got bird flu and about half died. Some were cats on poultry farms or that had contact with backyard chicken flocks that were infected with the virus, but some were domestic cats that somehow got sick.

The virus has also killed at least 22 mountain lions and sickened at least 10 bobcats, killing at least seven of them. A captive leopard in New York and a captive tiger in Nebraska also died of bird flu.

The numbers of infections likely is higher. For instance, about half of two dozen cats that were fed raw milk from infected cattle on one Texas farm earlier this year died, researchers report in the July 2024 Emerging Infectious Diseases . Those cats were not included in the World Organization for Animal Health report.

The image shows a grid of four squares, each a pinkish tissue sample from a different organ of a cat that was infected with bird flu. Small arrows point out where the virus damaged tissue in the brain (upper left), lungs (upper right), eye (lower right) and heart (lower left). Insets in each image show the virus, which appears dark brown, in each kind of tissue.

Symptoms before the cats’ deaths included stiff body movements, wobbliness, circling, runny noses and blindness. Researchers examined two of the dead cats and found evidence that the virus had infected their whole bodies. But it may have been brain infection that killed the cats. “Unfortunately, it’s not great news if we get to that point,” Davis says.

Can people get bird flu from cats?

It’s possible, but the risk is probably low. In 2016, after working with cats sickened with a different type of bird flu, a veterinarian in New York City became ill , researchers reported in Clinical Infectious Diseases in 2017.

It’s rare but possible for people to catch bird flu from pets, farm animals or wild animals, the CDC says. A dairy farm worker in Texas and one in Michigan both got mild eye infections this year after contact with infected dairy cows ( SN: 5/16/24 ). In the Michigan case, the worker got splashed in the face with raw milk containing the virus.

On May 30, the CDC announced that another dairy farm worker in Michigan got sick after contact with infected cows and developed respiratory symptoms, including a cough and watery eyes. That case was from a different farm where the person with the eye infection worked. The coughing dairy worker is isolating at home and their family and coworkers have not developed symptoms, the agency said.

Farm workers may be younger and healthier than the average person, Davis says. Less clear is whether really susceptible people, such as older people or ones with weakened immune systems, who live with cats might have a higher risk of getting infected, she says.

The exact odds of catching bird flu from animals hasn’t yet been established, even for workers exposed to large numbers of sick cattle or poultry. But public health agencies stress that the risk of getting bird flu is low for people who aren’t exposed to infected birds and their droppings or to infected animals.

Can dogs or other pets get bird flu?

Yes. Dogs are probably susceptible to getting bird flu, Davis says. Their canine cousins red foxes have frequently been victims of H5N1.

In one study of dogs, four of 194 hunting dogs that had retrieved waterfowl developed antibodies against H5N1 bird flu , researchers report in the June 2024 Emerging Infectious Diseases . That suggests that dogs can get infected with bird flu. None of the dogs got sick and they didn’t pass the virus to other dogs in their households, the team found.

Other small mammal pets, especially ferrets or mink, are also vulnerable.

How can pet owners keep their cats safe?

Keep cats inside away from birds, Davis advises. For cats that go outside, limit their exposure to bird feces, she says. “Keep the bird feeders out of the catio.”

A gray tiger domestic cat stalks white bird on a window ledge with only a closed window keeping the cat inside and preventing the cat from getting closer to its prey.

The World Organization for Animal Health advises cleaning shoes after walking in places where there are bird droppings, disinfecting surfaces where shoes are stored and keeping shoes away from cats.

Don’t feed cats food, especially raw poultry and milk, that might contain live bird flu virus, Davis says. “The bottom line is not feeding raw milk products to pets is as important as not consuming them yourselves.”

There are no bird flu vaccines available for cats right now.

What should I do if my cat brings home a dead bird?

Don’t touch the bird if you can help it. If you have to move the bird, put on a mask and gloves and goggles, Davis says. If you don’t have protective equipment a stick and a box will do. Wash your hands after handling the bird.

Monitor the cat and notify your vet if symptoms appear. The incubation period in cats tends to be short, with symptoms appearing two to three days after infection.

If you notice large numbers of dead birds or other animals, Davis advises notifying animal control authorities. “Many states will have either a state wildlife veterinarian or other reporting hotlines for dead wild animals,” she says. Those agencies can do testing to see if H5N1 is present and can dispose of the dead birds or animals.

My cat went missing for over nine years, we still laugh at where we found him

Leo the cat

Lucie Warrington had just finished a client call when she got a text from her husband a year ago, telling her she’d better sit down.

The vet, unable to contact Lucie, had called to deliver the news that they had found her long-lost cat Leo ; missing-presumed-dead since 2014.

His disappearance happened after Lucie moved to Rome temporarily with her husband Stu, leaving her pet cats, brothers Leo and Lewis, with a friend’s sister.

‘Four days after we got to Rome , my friend Helen rang me and said her sister was devastated; Leo had gone missing after a day,’ remembers Lucie.

Knowing Leo was a wanderer, she reassured the catsitter that he’d soon be back. However, after a week, he still hadn’t returned and her friend’s sister was so wracked with guilt and distress, that Helen decided to look after the remaining cat, Lewis.

Lucie, a film producer from Leeds, tried to convince herself that Leo had simply gone off to live with a little old lady somewhere, but deep down she thought her beloved pet had probably been hit by a car.

Then, a week later, she received another heartbreaking call from Helen – Lewis had been run over .

‘Within two weeks of being in Rome, both cats were apparently dead. It was horrendous ,’ remembers Lucie, 44. ‘I spent a whole day crying. I also felt guilty; we’d gone to live in Rome and left someone else to look after the cats. We swore immediately that we would never have a cat again. We couldn’t cope with it. It was just too upsetting’.

The years went by and the couple wanted another pet, but not wanting to repeat history, they decided to get a dog and in 2020, after months of gruelling lockdown misery, the couple got a Romanian rescue, followed by another one six months later.

‘Dogs stay with you and you take them on walks . But cats up and leave ; we wouldn’t want to keep a cat inside the house or face the risk of them getting run over,’ she reasons.

But then last year, Lucie got the call to tell her that Leo was still alive.

She says: ‘My husband said: “They’ve got Leo”.’ I said: “No they’ve not. He’s dead.”’

Brothers Leo and Lewis cats

A quick call to the vet revealed otherwise and it emerged that Leo had been living as a female cat under an assumed name at Lancaster Park petting farm near Oldham.

The farmer’s dad, who has since passed away, had a cat called Jess, who went missing. When she never came back, Leo apparently took her place and the farmer’s daughter was none-the-wiser, until she took ‘Jess’ to the vet about a limp.

While there, she asked them to scan Leo’s microchip so her father’s details could be removed, but Lucie’s information appeared instead.

The vet asked Lucie if she wanted Leo back.

‘I thought “God, no”. Our rescue dogs are scared of everything – including cats. And Leo is 14 – it wouldn’t be fair to re-home him. We live in a different house from the one he left.’

Happily, the farmer wanted to keep him and Lucie was invited to visit.

Leo on the prowl

When she went to see him after nine years, Lucie was overjoyed to see Leo coexisting happily with sheep, goats and tortoises – and bedding down with the rabbits each night – and immediately burst into tears.

‘The farmer initially thought I was crying because I wanted him back. It was all very emotional. Then Leo just followed us around while we explored the farm. He was always a friendly cat, but I like to think he recognised me.’

Lucie learned Leo had probably arrived on the farm in 2019, but she still doesn’t know how he turned up at a location 20 miles away from where he went missing, or what happened in the five years between.

‘What did he do during that time? Where did he go? That little old lady I told myself he’d gone to live with must have been involved at some point. Was he adopted by someone who moved or died? What adventures did he have?’

While Lucie will never know, she says she was relieved to see her cat back from the dead, looking healthy and happy, and enjoying his lovely home life on the farm.

‘He looked so young still; really healthy and happy. It was so cute. I couldn’t wait to tell everyone I knew. They were all in tears. It was just an amazing turn of events.

Lucie's reunion with Lewis.

‘It’s like a children’s story where you say a pet has gone to live on a farm, rather than admit they’re dead. But this actually did happen, which still makes us laugh.

Even though we haven’t seen him for a while, I hope Leo is still around and living his best life.’

After finding out her much-loved cat was still here – and that she was allowed to visit whenever she wanted – Lucie left a message with Helen, who burst into tears and told her sister that Leo was alive and kicking.

‘When I left I didn’t feel sad leaving him there,’ she says. ‘Because of the set up; there were so many other animals to play with; he just seemed really happy. It didn’t feel weird to leave him; it felt right.’

How to find your lost cat according to an expert

Louise Davies, from Animals Lost and Found in Gloucestershire, has years of experience reuniting lost pets – helping owners find one cat that had been gone for more than a decade.

  • Firstly, check your own home, garden, and the immediate vicinity thoroughly. Cats seldom stray far, but some of them have a positive genius for getting shut in sheds, garages, cars, greenhouses.
  • Knock on neighbours’ doors and ask them to checksheds/garages/outhouses while you wait in case your cat has got shut in. Ask them to prop open doors.
  • Your cat recognises the smell of home. Spread hoover contents around the outside of your house. Put your cat’s dirty litter try outside too. Hang dirty washing on your line, put smelly trainers in your garden with any cat bedding.
  • Go out looking at night to check, when it is quiet and there is less traffic. Work your way back towards home as you call them, so not to inadvertently lead them further away
  • Repeat these steps. Scared cats go into survival mode and may not even respond to their owner at first.
  • Make posters/fliers and put them up anywhere and everywhere
  • Alert all vets in the area and give them a description of your cat and ask them to display posters
  • Share your cat to any local lost and found pets’ pages, on national lost cat pages, on the Facebook pages of any local cat rescue groups, on local vets and larger community groups. Always include your post code and a mobile contact number.
  • Contact your local vets weekly. If your cat is chipped, contact the chip company to ensure they have your correct and up to date contact details, especially your telephone numbers. Don’t wait for them to come to you.
  • If your cat is pedigree (or looks like one!), check Gumtree and other ‘free’ selling sites just in case your cat has been stolen.

June deadline for cat owners to microchip pets or face fine - what you need to know

The deadline for cat owners to microchip their pets is fast approaching, with a law making it compulsory coming into force on 10 June. Here is what you need to know about the new requirements.

Cat owners could face a fine of up to £500 if they fail to microchip their pet under a law coming into force on 10 June.

There are more than nine million pet cats in England - but as many as 2.3 million are unchipped.

Microchips mean lost, stray or stolen cats can be reunited with their owners.

The government is introducing new rules to make microchipping compulsory in England.

Here is what you need to know.

What do cat owners need to do?

Cat owners must have their pet microchipped by 10 June.

After that date, it will be a legal requirement to have cats microchipped before they reach the age of 20 weeks.

Make sure you keep a note of your cat's microchip number. If you don't have it, call your vet to see if it is on their records, or take your cat to the vet to have them scanned.

What happens if you do not microchip your cat?

If you are found to have not microchipped your cat, you will be given 21 days to get it done.

If you still have not done it after this point, you will face a fine of up to £500.

What are the rules across the UK?

The new law only applies in England.

Microchipping cats is not compulsory in Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland - but there have been calls from animal charities for the nations to follow suit.

How much does microchipping cost?

Microchipping your cat costs between £10 and £30, according to the RSPCA.

Some animal charities and organisations also offer microchipping and may be able to do it for a reduced rate, or for free.

If you adopt a cat from a rescue centre or animal welfare charity they should be microchipped, and the organisation should give you the information you need to update the details on the microchip.

What happens if you need to update the microchip details?

You should contact your microchip database to update your details if you change your phone number or move house.

You can normally do this by phoning them or going to their website.

There may be a small fee to update your details on the database.

If you are rehoming your cat, you will need to complete a transfer of ownership document so the new owners' details will be on the microchip database.

If your cat dies you should report this to your microchip database so their files can be updated.

What is a microchip?

A microchip is a tiny computer chip about the size of a grain of rice. It contains a unique code that is registered on a database with the owner's contact details.

The microchip is inserted under the cat's skin, usually around the scruff of the neck, using a needle.

Once the chip is implanted, it stays there for life.

If a cat is found away from home, the microchip can be scanned so the owner can be contacted.

Does the microchipping rule apply to all cats?

Cats that have little or no human contact will not need to be microchipped.

This includes farm, feral and community cats.

The information is current and up-to-date in accordance with the latest veterinarian research.

Watching a beloved family pet get old can be hard. As cats age, they will grow weaker and skinnier. Their behavior might change. They might not be the same cat that you used to know when they were younger. In these situations, it is natural to start contemplating the future. Should you euthanize your cat? When do you need to start considering end of life care? Who ultimately makes that decision? These aren’t fun things to ponder, but they are necessary and natural to think about in the presence of a sick or aging pet.

This guide will help outline the things to consider before making a decision on euthanasia, how the conversation usually starts, and who makes the final decision about your cat. In these emotional situations, knowledge is power, and it is good to be armed with this information before the moment arrives.

3 cat divider

  • The Euthanasia Conversation

The euthanasia conversation is one of the hardest things any pet owner has to go through. Unfortunately, it is often inevitable at some point in your cat’s life. A veterinarian will often broach the subject of euthanasia by having a quality-of-life conversation with you about your pet. Euthanasia is often suggested for pets that have a deteriorating quality of life or ballooning care requirements.

Your veterinarian will talk about your cat’s daily life. Are they having more bad days than good days? Are they in frequent pain or discomfort? Are they behaving normally during the day? Are they eating and drinking? The answers to these types of questions will help guide you toward a decision on euthanasia. My wife is a veterinarian, and she has to have the quality-of-life conversation frequently. It is always given in the interest of the pet and the owner. Owners typically don’t want to see their pets suffer.

Euthanasia is often considered in the following circumstances:

  • The pet is old and has an incurable disease that is likely to get worse.
  • The pet has suffered a severe injury that will be too expensive or too difficult to overcome.
  • The pet is having more bad days than good days.
  • The pet is in constant pain or discomfort.
  • The pet is not eating or drinking properly and is unlikely to recover.
  • The pet is not acting normally (i.e., pooping inside, biting family members).

If your veterinarian finds these things in your cat, they are likely going to bring up euthanasia. But who gets to make the final decision about your cat? What if you are not ready to say goodbye?

  • The Owner Always Makes the Decision

Even if a veterinarian believes that euthanasia is the best course of action, they do not get to make the final decision. The decision of whether to euthanize your cat will always be the pet owner’s to make. Sometimes animals can live much longer than people realize if they are given the proper care. No one can force you to euthanize your cat if you are not ready.

I once had a beloved dog that had a splenic mass that was very concerning. We were given two options: do an expensive surgery that was risky due to my dog’s age or euthanize the dog. I elected to go ahead with the surgery. My dog recovered just fine, and the mass was benign. He lived another 3 years after that. There were risks and financial contributions involved with the surgery, but we opted to do that instead of euthanizing.

In another similar situation, my roommate had a cat that was very old, over 20, and it eventually needed a feeding tube put in. The vet recommended that the cat be euthanized, but my roommate could not bear to let the cat go at that moment. The cat died at home shortly after, but the extra few days with her cat gave my roommate time to process and grieve the situation, which is what she needed at that moment.

In both of these situations, euthanasia was recommended and decided against, with varying outcomes. Veterinarians will not recommend euthanasia unless they think it is in the best interest of the pet or the owner, so they do not recommend it lightly. Still, you always get the final say regarding a euthanasia decision.

  • The 4 Important Factors to Consider
  • 1. Quality of Life

One of the most important things to consider before euthanizing your cat is its quality of life. As much as we love our pets, it is selfish to keep them in a state of pain or illness because we are too scared to say goodbye. This is especially true because animals do not know that they are sick. They don’t know their prognosis. They don’t understand why they are hurting. Sometimes the most loving thing to do is to help ease your cat’s pain by euthanizing them before they can suffer any longer. If you think that your cat is suffering or languishing, it could be time to consider euthanasia.

  • 2. Daily Care Requirements

Another thing to consider is daily care requirements. Modern veterinary medicine has progressed rapidly in the previous decade. Vets can confidently keep animals alive for far longer than they used to, but sometimes that comes at the cost of routine care. Some animals will need numerous treatments to keep them alive. This can mean additional trips to the vet, daily medicine, special foods, and attention. Not everyone is equipped to deal with this kind of care, and that is okay.

Cats are particularly finicky because they are difficult to administer medication to, and they are very hard to get to go to the vet. This can make caring for them over long periods of time very difficult. Depending on the long-term prognosis, admitting that you cannot keep up with the necessary daily care is okay. We are only human, after all.

  • 3. Financial Costs

One of the more pragmatic and dismaying things to consider is financial costs. Some procedures and medications can be extremely expensive. Not everyone can afford to drop thousands of dollars on a sick cat, especially if they are old and have lived a good life. There is nothing wrong with that. You can’t be expected to put your family in a precarious financial situation to try to eke out some extra time with your beloved feline. Like the quality-of-life discussion, it can be selfish to harm your long-term financial future in exchange for a few more good days with your cat.

Sick cat, IV, dehydration, dropper

  • 4. Long-Term Outlook

Lastly, you need to weigh the long-term outlook for your cat. When I decided to opt for surgery instead of euthanasia for my aging dog, it was because the outlook was good if he survived the procedure. A successful surgery potentially meant multiple extra years of life. Not all prognoses are that good. Some outlooks are more dire. It is okay to weigh the long-term outcomes with the short-term choices. A surgery that only gets you an extra couple of months with your cat might not be as valuable as one that can net you multiple extra years with your cat.

  • Make the Decision You Feel Most Comfortable With

In the end, you need to make a decision that you feel comfortable with. If you do not feel comfortable making a decision on the spot about the fate of your cat , you can take time to ponder it. Do not feel pressured or shamed into making a decision you don’t want to make. In many cases, euthanasia is the best option, but not in every case. If you don’t think you can feel comfortable with the decision a week down the road, you shouldn’t make it in the moment. It never feels good to say goodbye to your cat, but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t the right decision for your animal at the time. Remember, you always have the final say over euthanasia decisions .

The same is true in reverse. If you believe that it is time for your cat to go and your vet wants to try more treatment options, you can still opt for euthanasia . You spend the most time with your cat, and you know them the best. You know when your animal is not thriving. That is why vets defer to the owner’s decision in these important matters.

Euthanizing a cat is never an easy decision , but it is yours to make. When the time comes, you will likely have a conversation with your veterinarian about your cat’s quality-of-life and daily routine. In some cases, it might be best to euthanize your cat to end their suffering. That is often one of the hardest moments of a person’s life, but it is one that most pet owners will, unfortunately, be faced with at one point or another. It is important to know the circumstances and your rights before making a final decision.

When should I put my pet down? Struggles of dealing with a sick cat

my cat pet essay

The past four days have been the longest year of my life.

OK, so it's only been less than a week, but boy have the past few days seemed like one long nightmare.

On Friday, we found out our oldest cat Emma has end stage kidney failure. Before we get into Emma's sickness, let me tell you about her. You're gonna love her!

Emma trained two complete idiots on how to be cat owners. Emma was born on the streets of Philadelphia, where she lived for a year. She wound up with the Philadelphia Animal Care and Control Team after she was discovered with two kittens during a massive, pre-Christmas blizzard in 2009. Her kittens didn't survive, but she did.

My wife had just gotten involved in animal rescue and wanted to foster a cat. We went to the shelter on a cold Sunday during the NFL playoffs. I had no interest in going, I wanted to watch the Ravens play the Patriots (I still remember the game I missed!), but it was the best trip I ever made.

When we got to the shelter, the cat my wife wanted to foster had found rescue. But there was a whole room of kitties who needed a home. All of them were sick with upper respiratory infections, but other than that, all they needed was a home.

I suggested we "just pick one!" but my wife was very careful about who she picked. Boy, did she make the right choice.

Emma came home with us and she only lasted a few weeks as a foster. We quickly adopted her because she was perfect for our family.

My wife needed a cat she could baby, give kisses and mother.

I wanted a cat who would play with me, and watch wrestling and football.

Emma checked every box and loved doing it.

But she was much more than a playmate or friend.

Since Emma came into our home, we've probably had 20 other cats come through our doors.

Two are Emma's sisters, Matilda and Muppet, who couldn't be more different. Muppet likes very few people and even fewer cats. Matilda loves everyone and everything. But both have bonds with Emma. The other cats were all fosters. And with the exception of one cat who would attack our girls every time she was let out into general population, Emma has been the perfect mentor. She is the leader of our pack, and the only cat everyone and every cat loved.

Emma is the perfect girl, but she also lived a perfect life.

No matter where she goes, she has the ability to find the most comfortable pillow, blanket and bed and will quickly claim that spot as her own.

She loves being pet. She's completely trained my wife into getting pets on demand, and she has me pretty programmed to. Emma knew we were rookies and she did whatever she could to make sure we knew what the heck we were doing.

She also had the kindest demeanor. You can say all cats do, but that's not true. I think Muppet would be an evil dictator if she could find the way to carry out her mission, but not Emma. She loves all creatures, even bugs that she refuses to kill. No matter what's going on, no matter how scared she is, Emma is always gentle and kind.

Emma was the perfect pet until last Friday when we found out she was at end stage kidney failure. When asked if she had months to live, the vet replied "maybe weeks."

Not at all what we wanted to hear.

We had taken Emma to the vet in February because she had a cold and her numbers were normal. So within three months, she went from completely healthy to being in the on-deck circle of the rainbow bridge.

The worst part is not knowing what's next, and it's what I've been struggling with since Friday.

We are told we'll know when it's time to end her pain, and I certainly don't want to keep her around for me. She's been too great of a friend to do that. But I also don't want her to miss out on a day of life.

Emma loves life.

She still loves life.

She might not be eating as much, but she's still eating small amounts, drinking, doing all the other things a cat would do, and she's enjoying the extra attention.

But when is it time?

When should we say goodbye?

I've dealt with loss of pets before and loss of people, and every circumstance blows. But this is bad because the only thing we know is our time with our girl is limited.

Every time she stands up, I worry. Every time she looks at me a certain way, I wonder if she's trying to tell me something. Every time she does anything, I worry. I also wonder if it's the last time she's ever going to do that.

Having covered animal rescue in the past and having great friends who deal with animals all the time, I've been lucky to get a lot of advice, and I know every situation is unique. Anything can happen, she could live a few months, but today could also be our last day together. I'm really struggling with the unknown.

Plus, your mind plays tricks on you. Is she coming over to tell me something? Is she coming over to say goodbye? Or is she coming over because that's what she's done for the past 15 years, she's acting normal but you're the idiot worried about everything?

It's nonstop.

Still, I'm glad she's the one training me.

Emma has been the perfect starter cat for us because she's been patient and did everything she can to let us know how to take care of felines. I guess this is the final lesson, but it's not one I'm ready for.

We are spending the bulk of our days making sure Emma has everything she wants, making sure the other cats are leaving her alone while we make sure they know they're still loved, and crying. It's been a strange four days, but I think we're starting to adapt.

While we're not eating, crying and wondering, Emma hasn't really noticed. She's too busy enjoying the extra food, pets and love.

I'm trying, but really struggling, to stop worrying about the future and just enjoy the present. It's hard when you know your time with your best friend is running out.

But it's not hard for Emma.

I need to be more like her.
