Malaysian University English Test or commonly known as MUET is used as one of the minimum requirements for students to enrol into local tertiary education level . As for now, MUET Malaysia is only accepted in Malaysia, Singapore and some universities worldwide.

With the current format changes , there may be a positive chance that MUET will be accepted and recognized globally. The Majlis Peperiksaan Malaysia MUET is established to evaluate four language skills, which are listening, speaking, reading and writing .

MUET Preparation

MUET Malaysia Marking Scheme

To tackle high marks for each paper, you need to know the marking scheme for them. There is no official marking scheme released at the time this article is being written. But, do not worry. Let’s take a look at the general information that we have gathered about each of the papers.

Currently, each of the MUET papers highest mark is 90 marks . They make up an aggregated score of 360 .

Each of the papers has an equal weightage which is 25% . These equal changes provide a great opportunity for students who have different strengths and weaknesses in the four assessed skills.

The MUET result is graded in a nine-band with Band 5+ being the highest and 1.0 is the lowest. Below is the table showing the aggregated score and respective bands.

We break down the marks, assessment weighting and the number of questions for each paper below.

MUET Listening Paper 1 Marking Scheme

The listening paper consists of five parts . Each part consists of recording audio that you will be listening to.

You will be allowed to read the questions when the test begins. Then, you will be listening to the audio recording twice. You can answer the questions as you listen to the recorded audio. Be sure to mark your answers in the answering sheet.

The highest mark you can obtain for this paper is 90 marks . It carries a 25% assessment weighting of the overall MUET result.

The latest MUET listening paper is solely assessing your listening skill because all the questions are in form of multiple-choice questions . You have a time limit of 50 minutes to complete all parts.

It is wise to have a MUET listening practice at least once a week before the examination day. It will help you prepare and get used to listening to English conversations.

MUET Speaking Paper 2 Marking Scheme

In the MUET speaking test, there will be two parts - Part 1 and Part 2. Part 1 is for the individual presentation and Part 2 is for group discussion .

There are not many changes in the MUET speaking questions except that in Task 2, you will be given points to help you with your group discussion. You will also have an extra minute of preparation time for Task 2.

MUET Speaking Test

The total mark for this paper is 90 marks . It contributes 25% of the whole MUET examination result.

The current speaking test MUET format will focus on the language, discourse and delivery of your speech . The time allocated for the speaking test is 30 minutes .

You may want to read further on the new MUET 2021 format to get used to them.

MUET Reading Paper 3 Marking Scheme

The MUET reading paper relatively looks similar to the old format. There will be 7 parts in the paper which includes 10 texts and 40 questions.

The texts provided in the test booklet can be short texts of the same text type and thematically linked, amounting to a total of 100 to 150 words. Some of them can be independent texts based on the same theme, amounting to a total of 700 to 800 words.

The total time for you to answer all MUET reading questions is 75 minutes . The highest mark that you can obtain is 90 marks . The marks you gain from this paper carries a 25% weighting assessment of the whole MUET marks.

Although the format for this paper has changed a bit, you can practice your reading comprehension using past year papers or other MUET assessment papers that you can find on the internet.

MUET Writing Paper 4 Marking Scheme

The MUET writing paper consists of two parts - Task 1 and Task 2 . Each of the tasks contributes 30 and 60 marks respectivel y. The maximum mark you can get from this paper is 90 marks . It has an assessment weighting of 25% of all MUET marks.

The time allocated for this paper is 75 minutes . You are advised to spend 25 minutes on Task 1 and 50 minutes on Task 2 .

In this paper, you will be evaluated on the task fulfilment, organization, structure and also lexis . There is no exact format to follow . As long as you answer the question accordingly and write your essay using appropriate writing requirements.

Usually, the hardest part to score is the writing paper. This is where a tutor could be helpful. Having a tutor will assist you to gain the best outcome in your coursework. He or she can offer you guidance, advice and feedback that you can use to improve your MUET essay writing .

Where to find a tutor, you ask?

Looking out for a tutor is super easy these days. With the advance of technology, everything is at your fingertips. You can find your English tutor on an online tutoring website such as Superprof.

Superprof offers a wide selection of tutors in various subjects. With more than 16 million tutors available in over 1000 subjects , you will be sure to find your ideal tutor .

Online learning

Since many students and parents are opting for online lessons these days, you can take advantage of this too. Going for an online lesson has so many benefits.

  • Believe it or not, online learning sessions cost you less than a traditional in-person lesson . Why? Because you can avoid transportation expenses such as gas for cars or public transport fares.
  • You can avoid other unnecessary expenses when you go out such as buying snacks and other impulsive expenditures.
  • The teacher can charge you less because they do not have to pay for premise expenses.
  • Bonus tips: Most of the Superprof’s tutors offer their first 1-hour lesson for free .
  • Online learning sessions let you be flexible with your timetable . You can have your online learning session just about anytime - before going to school, during lunchtime, after school or late at night. Just discuss with your tutor regarding your availability.
  • With online tutoring sessions, you can save time too. You don’t have to go out and stuck in a traffic jam to physically meet up with your tutor. You could just set the time, turn on your computer and immediately connect to your tutor.
  • You can learn from the comfort of your own bedroom .
  • Superprof provides wide options of tutors to choose from worldwide . So you have a broader option to work with just about any tutor that has high expertise and experience.

Having a great tutor to help you out with your MUET examination is nothing if you do not prepare yourself enough. You should have a strong understanding of what is MUET all about to get you started. When you understand the MUET examination thoroughly, it is easy for you to tackle each paper.

Do take note that there will be different minimum MUET requirements for a different selection of courses and tertiary institutions . Whatever course and local university you are planning to pursue, try your best to score the highest band in the MUET test.

How to score in your MUET

share image

Read our new updated and comprehensive guide to the MUET Exam

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

*Please note that this content relates to the MUET exam before the 2021 format update and change.

MUET tests you on your English language proficiency covering several key areas including writing, speaking, listening and reading. To score the highest band possible, use our top tips:

MUET Writing

Having a wide vocabulary doesn’t guarantee that you’ll do well in writing. You must know how to use those words in the right context. Of course, grammar is just as important. If you’re weak in grammar, it’s best to use short succinct sentences instead of using flambouyant language. Use grammar books, read more English materials and notice how sentences are structured. Then, practice your writing and ask someone to correct your work.

online learning essay muet

MUET Speaking

To improve on your speaking, watch a lot of English TV shows. Avoid reading the subtitles. Be very careful not to use slang which most Malaysians are used to. If you try not to speak Malaysian English from now, you’ll find it easier when sitting for the MUET Speaking section. Don’t be embarrassed – ask friends to speak to you in English, start conversing at home and with family members and you’ll find yourself improving along the way.

MUET Reading

Many dismiss this paper as easy. But, this reading paper is tough. It requires students to analyse the questions and familiarise themselves with data. A lot of practice helps so get cracking on all the questions online and from MUET reference books.

MUET Listening

You may be well prepared for the listening test, but find yourself struggling to decipher what’s being said during the exam. This could be due to the sound system and nerves. Stay calm and if you’ve done it a few times before the actual day, you’re less likely to clam up if you missed out on certain bits. The audio is played twice – the trick is to write down the answers first in pencil and then the second time in pen. Another thing you should know is that MUET sometimes test your general knowledge. It could be topics surrounding Malaysia, sports and education.

What you need to work on

Merely reading the dictionary will not help hone your English. You can understand a bombastic word and fairly know how to use it, but it still doesn’t equate to having a good grasp of English if your grammar is all over the place. Master your grammar first, then go ahead and memorise those fancy big words. Simple grammar rules like present and past tenses and when to put an S after a word must come naturally to you. To practise, pick up an exercise workbook on grammar and practise hard till you get there. Start reading lots of English materials as they’re grammatically correct. Take notice of how they’re written and slowly, you’ll get used to the grammar being used.

Get rid of ‘rojak’ English

Get rid of the habit of speaking in ‘rojak’ English. It may be widely spoken in Malaysia, but you’ll be heavily penalised if you do so in your speaking paper. Avoid using words like lah, mah, wah and eh when you speak. Do this long enough and you’ll naturally speak without all the bad habits.

Learn to scan

Of course you should read carefully and thoroughly for your papers, but it’s also important that you learn to scan huge chunky paragraphs of information. This will help you with information search and limit the time spent going through an article over and over again in search for answers.

Underline as you read

Train yourself to underline important words and points when you read articles or questions. Carry this habit into the exam hall and you’ll realise that the act of underlining words helps to engrave the points in your head and at the same time, allows you to pick out the gist of information.

Train your ears

You must be able to differentiate words that sound similar such as soup and soap, hard work and hardwood, and lame and lamp. It’s also important that you can tell the different meanings of words like limp and lymph, nodes and notes, and trip and tripe. Although you may not have heard some of these words, listening carefully and relating it to the context will enable you to identify the accurate word.

Be prepared for the worst

In some instances, you may be unlucky and end up doing your listening paper in a hall filled with echo. Or the sound system may sound a bit too muffled for your liking. The trick is to stay calm and not panic. Train yourself to listen carefully, write down your answers in pencil first, or write more than one answer when you’re not sure and finalise it using a pen.

Everything You Should Know About MUET

July 31, 2023

muet

The Malaysian University English Test (MUET) is an important exam for Malaysian pre-university students who aspire to pursue higher education or secure better job opportunities.

Administered by the Malaysian Examinations Council (MEC) since 2001, this English examination is required for public university admission.

By conducting the examination, institutions can gauge the readiness of Malaysian university students, particularly, for academic coursework.

It also serves as a standard benchmark for assessing their English comprehension in different tertiary education contexts.

As such, Malaysian pre-university students who plan to sit for the MUET are advised to prepare thoroughly, as it is notably more challenging than Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM).

What Is MUET?

As mentioned earlier, MUET is a prerequisite for admission to public universities, so you must understand the examination structure before registering for it.

It comprises four English assessments which are Speaking, Reading, Writing, and Listening.

To provide an overview of the MUET exam structure, here is a breakdown:

1. Speaking

The speaking test is split into two parts which are individual and group interaction, and last 30 minutes.

For Task 1, you will have to give a presentation on a particular topic, with 2 minutes of preparation followed by 2 minutes of speaking.

Moving on to Task 2, you will be grouped with three other candidates and given 3 minutes to prepare.

The group will then have between 8 and 12 minutes to discuss a question provided by the examiner.

2. Listening

The listening test lasts for 50 minutes and comprises 30 questions.

The questions may be in the form of information transfer, short-answer, or multiple-choice questions (MCQs).

The candidates will hear each recorded dialogue twice, so paying close attention to the details is crucial.

3. Reading

The reading test is 75 minutes long and consists of 40 multiple-choice and matching questions.

The writing test is 75 minutes long and comprises two tasks.

The first task is guided writing, and the MUET candidates must write at least 100 words.

The second task involves extended writing on a given topic and the minimum word count is 250.

Usually, these assessments are conducted on different days. For instance, the speaking test differs from the Reading, Writing, and Listening tests.

Below is the table of the MUET 2023 calendar:

Therefore, as a Malaysian pre-university student, you need to keep track of the examination date and month as it is based on the registration session.

However, if you are unable to make it for any of the dates, you may opt for MUET on Demand (MoD).

In addition, MUET may not affect grades in pre-university programs.

However, it is an essential examination for students who wish to pursue higher education in public universities.

MUET Registration 2023

Pre-university students in Malaysia can register for their MUET examination through an institution or Malaysian Examination Council portal website .

They must fill in their details accurately and pay the required fee; RM100.

This fee can be paid through online banking, buying a MEC PIN at the nearest Bank Simpanan Nasional (BSN) branch counter, or using a credit card.

If a student wishes to take the exam on a different date than the scheduled one (MoD), they can register online through the same web portal.

However, the MoD’s fee is RM250.

MUET Band Score

The MUET band score is categorized into five levels which are A2, B1, B2, C1, and C1+.

Here is an overview of each level:

(The table above retrieved from Official Portal Malaysian Examination Council )

For MUET candidates, there are two ways to access their examination results.

They can obtain the results from their institution or MEC (if they are private candidates) or check their results via the MEC portal or SMS service.

It's worth noting that the results maintain their validity for five years from the date of issuance.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: Who has to sit for the MUET examination?  A: STPM, matriculation, diploma, and pre-university students who wish to pursue a first-degree program in a local university.

Q: When is the MUET examination scheduled?  A: Starting in 2012, MUET will be held thrice; March, July, and September.

Q: After the MUET registration, how do the candidates check their status?  A: Candidates can check their MUET registration status through the MEC portal or SMS MUET INFO <space> Identity Card number and send it to 15888.

Q: What to do if the candidate is misspelled and the Identity Card is wrong on the MUET registration slip? A: The candidates can inform the MEC via a letter with a copy of the identity card enclosed. However, the amendments will not be done on the registration slip but on the MUET result slip.

Q: Why do the candidates get an X in the MUET examination? A: The candidates are required to attend ALL the MUET tests. If a candidate fails to sit at least one of the tests, they will get an X for the MUET result.

We wish all the best to the MUET candidates of 2023. Good luck and do your best!
