When speaking about the effects of noise pollution, it is necessary to highlight some fundamentals of the issue. So, first of all, it should be pointed out that noise is considered to be a negative phenomenon both at physiological and psychological levels.

Generally, one is to keep in mind that noise seems to be one of the most important threats to the quality of a person’s life. The modern technological developments are recognized to be the basic reasons of noise appearance. Moreover, the effects of noise pollution are especially harmful for urban areas where industry and transportation are developed.

Some fundamentals of noise pollution

A sound pressure, which exceeds 70 dB, is recognized to be harmful for human ears. In most cases, “continuous exposure to such high level noise higher than the acceptable values can lead to a progressive loss of hearing and/or an

increase in the threshold of hearing” (Roba 2). It should be pointed out that such high sound levels are mostly associated with noise from factories, motorcycles, etc.

Noise pollution studies

The impact of noise pollution on people was also observed. For instance, those adults, who were annoyed by traffic noise (trains, air and road traffic) had hypertension; while for children, it was extremely hard to lean and to differentiate between the words under high sound levels.

Those people, who live in high traffic areas, have more health problems (higher blood pressures and lower heart pulse rates). The employees of some factories in Turkey also took part in the investigation. The results of the studies showed that approximately 50% of employees suffered from NIHL.

In other words, one is to keep in mind that noise-induced hearing loss seems to be the most widespread disease in industries. Lane is of the opinion that “Noise has numerous health effects, making noise pollution a public health concern; although, it has not been well addressed. To name a few, these effects include elevated blood pressure, noise-induced hearing loss, sleep disorders, and irritability” (1).

It is obvious that noise pollution is really a great problem, as there are not only adults, but also children who show the signs of noise-induced hearing loss. For instance, it might be noted that 15% of children (6-19 years old) in the USA suffer from NIHL.

Mental diseases, however, should also be taken into account, as certain studies have shown that children’s decreased attention, oppositional behavior, etc. mostly depended upon noise levels, which exceeded 55 dB. Certain difficulties with social adaptation because of high sound levels should not be neglected too. Isabelle Lane states that “Noise pollution via community noise also causes annoyance and disturbance among those with depression and anxiety and may make their

symptoms worse” (4). Generally, there are many unpleasant consequences, which noise pollution causes. A person’s ability to work well, his or her memory, concentration and motivation depend upon the conditions he or she works within.

The effects of noise pollution seem to be really destructive, as they deteriorate people’s quality of life. Various accidents in the workplace also occur because of noise pollution. The employees’ effectiveness and accuracy depend upon sound level they work within. Increased negative reactions are also caused by high sound levels; so, to prevent negative social and behavioral effects, one is to think about his or her hearing protection.

Our town of Winnetka, Ill., has had a summer-month ban on gas-powered leaf blowers for many years that has been largely ignored by landscapers. This past spring, local residents decided to change that. By June, our police department had secured voluntary pledges from 35 landscapers to obey the ban. The pledge wasn’t perfect, but our town was quieter and the air cleaner than it’s been for years.

When people learn about how these antiquated machines harm people and the planet, there’s a strong pull to do the right thing.

As someone who has loathed these obnoxious, deafening, exhaust-spewing machines for years, all I can say — loudly, because of the noise — is: Yes!

Our greatest artists, over hundreds of years, have struggled to convey the most frightening image of the horrors of Hell. This imagined virtual world in which we will “socialize,” buy and play, where we will have nothing to fear but hackers and the effects of Facebook’s moderation and A.I., is likely to trump them all.

To me these signs are a lovely antidote to the reasons they exist — the increase in overt racism, misogyny, science denial and a disregard of the truth.

And the sign’s kicker — what Ms. Hess calls the “sanctimonious final line” — “Kindness Is Everything”? Bring it on!

Noise Pollution is regarded as a form of environmental pollution brought on by excessive noise from various sources. The term "noise disturbance" also applies to noise pollution. In addition to being unhealthy, excessive noise can disturb animal or human life. Although there is a significant environmental problem in India that requires adequate attention to be resolved, noise pollution is less dangerous than pollution of the water, air, and soil. Machines, transportation systems, poor urban planning and other factors contribute to outdoor noise.

Among the sources of indoor noise include domestic appliances, construction activity, loud music, etc. The most frequent disability brought on by noise pollution is irreversible hearing loss due to ear drum damage.

The government may use a conditional or permanent order to eliminate a public nuisance under Section 133.

Limits for noise exposure in the work zone are outlined in the Factories Act Reduction of Noise and Oil of Machinery.

The Motor Vehicle Act deals with changing faulty engines and using the horn.

Preventive Measures For Noise Pollution

Public awareness should be raised to regulate the hazardous sound level in the environment, and everyone should take the regulations seriously.

Reduce the usage of high-pitched sound generators inside and outside the home, such as at parties, clubs, pubs, and discos.

Planting trees can reduce the noise generated by moving from one location to another, which is another helpful measure.

We must take responsibility for refraining from needless honking. We can reduce noise pollution if strict measures are implemented against those who break this regulation.

Additionally, constructing soundproof walls, windows, and flyovers in homes, buildings, and overpasses can reduce noise.

As noise pollution levels rise, there is an urgent need for greater public awareness of its sources, effects, and preventative measures. In workplaces, schools, neighborhoods, hospitals, etc., excessive noise levels should be prohibited. The issue of noise pollution should be covered in textbooks, and lectures and discussions should be held in educational institutions to create more informed and socially responsible future generations.

We know that a sound is a form of energy. Sometimes the sound can be soothing to listen to and, at times, loud to hear. Sound can travel in the air and is produced by the vibration of objects. Regular exposure to a higher sound level that impacts humans and other living organisms is known as sound pollution. This article will help us understand what noise pollution is, the types of noise and pollution, and its causes and examples.

What is Noise Pollution?

The word noise is derived from the Latin word ‘Nausea’, which means sickness in which one feels the need to vomit. Noise is the unpleasant and undesirable sound which leads to discomfort in human beings. The intensity of sound is measured in decibels (dB) . The faintest sound that the human ear can hear is 1 Db. Due to increasing noise around the civilizations, noise pollution has become a matter of concern. Some of its major causes are vehicles, aircraft, industrial machines, loudspeakers, crackers, etc. When used at high volume, some other appliances also contribute to noise pollution, like television, transistor, radio, etc.

Types of Noise Pollution

Following are the three types of pollution:

Transport Noise
Neighbourhood Noise
Industrial Noise

It mainly consists of traffic noise which has increased in recent years with the increase in the number of vehicles. The increase in noise pollution leads to deafening of older people, headache, hypertension, etc.

The noise from gadgets, household utensils etc. Some of the main sources are musical instruments, transistors, loudspeakers, etc.

It is the high-intensity sound which is caused by heavy industrial machines. According to many researches, industrial noise pollution damages the hearing ability to around 20%.

Causes and Sources of Noise Pollution

Following are the causes and sources of noise pollution:

Industrialisation: Industrialisation has led to an increase in noise pollution as the use of heavy machinery such as generators, mills, huge exhaust fans are used, resulting in the production of unwanted noise.
Vehicles: Increased number of vehicles on the roads are the second reason for noise pollution.
Events: Weddings, public gatherings involve loudspeakers to play music resulting in the production of unwanted noise in the neighbourhood.
Construction sites: Mining, construction of buildings, etc add to the noise pollution.

Noise Pollution Examples

Following are the examples of noise pollution:

Unnecessary usage of horns
Using loudspeakers either for religious functions or for political purposes
Unnecessary usage of fireworks
Industrial noise
Construction noise
Noise from transportation such as railway and aircraft

Effects of Noise Pollution on Human Health

Noise pollution can be hazardous to human health in the following ways:

Hypertension: It is a direct result of noise pollution which is caused due to elevated blood levels for a longer duration.
Hearing loss: Constant exposure of human ears to loud noise that are beyond the range of sound that human ears can withstand damages the eardrums, resulting in loss of hearing.
Sleeping disorders: Lack of sleep might result in fatigue and low energy level throughout the day affecting everyday activities. Noise pollution hampers the sleep cycles leading to irritation and an uncomfortable state of mind.
Cardiovascular issues: Heart-related problems such as blood pressure level, stress and cardiovascular diseases might come up in a normal person and a person suffering from any of these diseases might feel a sudden shoot up in the level.

Prevention of Noise Pollution

Some noise pollution preventive measures are provided in the points below.

Honking in public places like teaching institutes, hospitals, etc. should be banned.
In commercial, hospital, and industrial buildings, adequate soundproof systems should be installed.
Musical instruments’ sound should be controlled to desirable limits.
Dense tree cover is useful in noise pollution prevention.
Explosives should not be used in forest, mountainous and mining areas.

Nearly 10 million Paris region residents are exposed to noise and air pollution exceeding recommendations

The first cross-mapping of noise and air pollution, affecting around 80% of the region's population, greatly surpasses the guidelines of the World Health Organization.

Nearly 9.7 million people in the Paris region, i.e. 80% of the population, are exposed simultaneously to levels of air and noise pollution that greatly exceed the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO), Airparif and Bruitparif, the two organizations responsible for monitoring air and noise quality, said in a first of its kind report published on Tuesday, May 28.

This is the first time the two observatories have produced a cross-mapping of air and noise pollution within France's most populous region. The Greater Paris metropolis concentrates 86% of people in situations of highly degraded exposure owing to transport-related noise (major roads, airports, railroads), air pollution or both.

This mapping reveals that 487 municipalities (38% of municipalities in Ile-de-France, the Paris region) are particularly exposed to these two pollutions: More than half their population is simultaneously exposed to air quality deemed poor and noise levels considered significant. A large proportion of these communities are located in what is known as the dense heart of the Paris conurbation: Paris and its inner suburbs, particularly those close to Charles-de-Gaulle and Orly airports.

It's a double disadvantage that's easy to explain: The closer you live to a major traffic artery, the more exposed you are to both noise and pollution (emissions of fine particles and nitrogen oxides) generated by automobile traffic, still largely dominated by combustion engines (gasoline and diesel). With over 40,000 kilometers of roads, including more than 1,000 kilometers of freeways and expressways, the Paris region is criss-crossed by the largest road network in France.

Regulatory limits exceeded

The most critical situations (red zones) are mostly located in the direct vicinity (100 to 200 meters) of major roads. In Paris and surrounding areas, the ring road is obviously a major source of pollution, but other roads in the capital are also bright red: the gateways, the main squares, the large boulevards and the embankment roads still open to traffic.

Charles-de-Gaulle and Orly airports are also a major source of nuisance for local residents and the areas over which they fly. In addition to aircraft, all airport activity is a source of disturbances.

In a study published in February, Airparif revealed that the area around Paris-Charles-de-Gaulle airport was as polluted as the Paris ring road in terms of ultrafine particles, the most dangerous to health. The new air-noise mapping shows that the areas around airport access roads are also zones of highly pronounced co-exposure.

This study proposes a novel approach to understand tourist perceptions of water quality in Laguna de Tres Palos, using social media analysis. Utilizing methodologies such as keyword frequency, word cloud generation, sentiment analysis, semantic analysis, semantic networks, topic analysis, opinion mining, influence analysis, spam detection, trend analysis, and emotion analysis, we examine public discussions and sentiments regarding the physicochemical quality of the lagoon’s water. Preliminary findings reveal diverse perceptions, which may influence tourism and local ecosystem management strategies. This analysis is part of a broader study, which involves the implementation of a real time, remote water quality monitoring network at the lagoon, highlighting the intersection of social media data, environmental monitoring, and tourism management.

For instance, in cities like Tokyo and New York, rush hour congestion can lead to significant delays and even pose health risks during events like heatwaves or pandemics, exacerbating the discomfort of dense, confined spaces. A practical solution is the implementation of demand-responsive transport systems. By adjusting the frequency and routes of buses and trains based on real-time data, cities can better manage passenger loads and reduce congestion. Additionally, promoting off-peak travel through reduced fares could incentivize users to travel at less congested times, thus evening out passenger distribution throughout the day and enhancing overall transport efficiency.

Another critical issue is the environmental impact of traditional public transport, which often relies on fossil fuels. This reliance contributes significantly to urban air pollution and broader environmental degradation, compounding the global challenge of climate change. Transitioning to greener alternatives, such as electric or hydrogen-fuelled vehicles, could significantly mitigate these effects. In conclusion, while public transport is essential for sustainable urban living, its effectiveness is hindered by issues like delays and overcrowding. By adopting smart traffic technologies and enhancing service capacity, these problems can be addressed, making public transport a more reliable and attractive option for commuters.

In the day and age of interconnectivity, public transport has become not only complicated but also essential for daily lives. This essay will explore some problematic areas of it and the potential solutions to alleviate their impacts.

One major problem due to modern-day public transport is the destruction on the natural environment. In order to widen the roads, trees along the roadsides may be cut down and this, in turn, will disrupt the local wild life of small creatures and birds. Building new expressways sometimes require clearing out large areas of forest and this may put an already fragile ecosystem into a further peril. Some other unfavourable aspects of public transport include problems such as noise pollution and overcrowding. One can easily imagine that living near a busy international airport will not bring peaceful quiet nights and the peak-hour subway trains are the ticking time bomb for the next pandemic.

There are a number of options to tackle these issues. First of all, the governments should place stricter regulations to include sustainability measures in the transportation development projects, such as setting up conservation areas to protect the local flora and fauna. They should also mandate for multidisciplinary committees with experts from various sectors to review the existing city blueprints and identify areas that are due for reforming, for example, relocating large-scale transportation hubs away from the general public housing areas. Last but not least, governments should add more buses and trains and introduce reliable schedules to bring down the crowd density on public transports.

In conclusion, public transport is one of the most important features in our lives and we cannot live without it. While there are multiple problems and inconveniences that are posed by public transport, there are also a myriad of solutions available to tackle these problems.
