Evolution of underground residential architecture is largely dependent on the environment in which the buildings were constructed (climate, geographical area ...), but also of the materials and technologies used during the construction. Most residential un derground facilities were built in areas where the climatic characteristics are high heat and rare rainfall, while they are rarely present in colder, mountainous areas with snow. Researches indicate that the underground dwellings were built in many Mediter ranean countries, Asia and Africa, North America and Europe, with a greater or lesser extent, through all historical periods. From prehistory to no wada ys , man adapts to the conditions and environment in which he resides, gradually raising the quality of li fe and the function of the community he acts as an individual. Caves, mountains, and desert ambients offered opportunities for different forms of underground habitats. From the man's exodus from the cave, he is struggling with the problems of overcoming na ture and choosing the most functional and most suitable form of physical structure for the fulfillment of his own needs. Underground objects as a specific form of structure for meeting the needs of housing, appear in all parts of our planet. The underground architecture is linked to the history of human beings as it was the first architecture to resort to it in the early days of human life for housing and protection within the ecosystem. However, life soon developed in various technological and construction fields with many disadvantages that contributed to influencing the ecosystem. Including architects to the need to preserve the ecosystem and return to such a kind of architecture ,but in line with the progress of urban and technology ,to address this research to study the underground architecture as an architectural and environmental concept through the most important trends and ideas an architecture that has been advocated by many architectural movements , and the possibility of applying such kind of architecture as a technique in the future to reach a number of conclusions and recommendations to work on the rise of this type of research to serve the life humanity as a whole .

The use of the land as a location of the architecture project is an issue that originates from the beliefs and history of world architecture. Human, since the beginning of creation, has used utilization of underground levels as one of the best places to live. Rapaport’s studies (1969), emphasized the importance of the use of the underground levels in the primitive`s houses. This issue has a long record in the traditional architecture of the East, especially Iran's traditional architecture; so that many brilliant and valuable architectural projects somehow have used the underground levels. The techniques that have been used in those buildings, in addition to saving the energy, have significant aesthetic aspects. Many of these techniques can be used in architectural design in the contemporary era. Hence, the main questions of this study are: 1-what are the most important lessons of traditional Iranian architecture about the use of sustainable technologies? 2-How can be applied the lessons from traditional architecture in contemporary architecture as well? To answer the research questions, logical reasoning analysis methods is used, with descriptive - Analytic techniques. As a sample, the Aqa Bozorg School and mosque in Kashan, an innovative example of traditional Iranian architecture, has been selected for analysis. For this purpose, primarily based on objective observation and the existing documents, design criteria of this magnificent monument that leads to beauty, durability and sustainability this building, has been extracted. The strategies using and applying these criteria to the guidelines and policies on the use of sustecture in contemporary architecture have been investigated. Results of the study indicate that traditional Iranian architecture is full of significant innovative lessons, which can be used in the field of contemporary architecture also.

A copy of every Oxford Brookes PhD and MPhil thesis is deposited with the Library in print format (also known as a 'hardcopy'), online format (also known as 'electronic' theses or eTheses), or in both print and online formats. Oxford Brookes theses submitted from 2021 onwards are only available from the Library in online (or 'electronic') format.
Format of the thesis. 19.1 The submission of the thesis for examination should be electronic, by email, directly to the Research Degrees Team. Students must submit their thesis for examination by emailing one electronic PDF copy of your final thesis, and the completed, signed RDC-Sub submission form, to the Research Degrees Team.
A PhD is a higher level research degree, and you would normally be expected to have a Masters degree or relevant professional experience before starting a doctorate. Doing research for a doctorate is a unique and personal experience. You are becoming an expert in your chosen field and making a contribution to that field by creating new knowledge.
Dissertations. A dissertation is a longer research project on a topic that (hopefully) interests you. It is an opportunity to demonstrate the research skills you have developed throughout your degree. Being in charge of a longer research project can seem overwhelming, but breaking it down and working on it regularly will make it manageable.
