  • After completing the first year (normally four courses per semester, including Advanced Microeconomics I and II, Advanced Macroeconomics I and II and Econometrics), students then take qualifying examinations in Microeconomics and Macroeconomics.
  • After completing field courses, usually in one or two years, students take examinations in two fields of specialization.   Current areas of specialization are Applied Methods, Finance and International Economics.
  • In the first year, all PhD students also enroll in ECON 399  PhD Dissertation Workshop . The workshop provides opportunities for advanced students to present papers and define thesis objectives.
  • In the third year, the PhD candidates begin to  work on the dissertation , prepare initial work on the thesis, and submit a 3rd year paper.
  • In the third year and beyond, the thesis takes shape and a formal committee is assembled. Once a thesis defense date is scheduled, the student presents the core of the thesis work, and once completed, the degree is awarded during the next degree period.
  • PhD students are required to work as either a teaching or research assistant at Brandeis International Business School in years 1-5 of the program.
  • Students receive the Master of Science degree upon successful completion of 13 courses, passing their 2nd year qualifying exams, and at least one of two field exams.

Doctoral students in international business have a close working relationship with the faculty, often participating in joint research projects. Students also have the opportunity to become involved in research at or through South Carolina's Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER).

The objective of the doctoral program with emphasis in international business is to prepare students for academic careers. In addition to extensive course work in international business, students are required to develop a cognate or area of functional specialization. Students often select cognate course work in areas such as sociology, psychology, anthropology, international studies and management. Students are encouraged to use the cognate to develop a program of study that establishes a strong multidisciplinary foundation supporting their functional specialization and individual research interests. Quantitative methods courses complement the international business and cognate courses to develop a strong foundation for academic research.

New Ph.D. Scholars Program provides financial support for underrepresented minority groups.

The international business concentration consists of at least 48 hours of course work. The courses offered in the international business area are:

  • IBUS 801 Ph.D. Seminar in International Business I
  • IBUS 802 Ph.D. Seminar in International Business II
  • IBUS 811 Ph.D. Seminar in International Finance I
  • IBUS 820 Ph.D. Seminar in International Marketing
  • IBUS 830 Ph.D. Seminar in International Management
  • IBUS 850 Ph.D. Seminar on Cultural Frameworks and Research

We are interested in equipping students who have strong interest in international finance to become leading scholars in this field. We encourage students to pursue research topics applying core finance concepts to the international arena. We also encourage interdisciplinary research with a focus on global finance.  

Building on the strengths of the international business and the finance faculties, the international finance concentration incorporates doctoral courses in international business and finance areas as follows:

To equip students to research and publish in top finance and international business journals, the doctoral core also includes a substantial background in econometrics, mathematical statistics and stochastic processes, along with other statistical techniques applicable to extending the theoretical and empirical understanding of international finance.

Research and Teaching Support

Doctoral students in international finance have a close working relationship with the faculty, often participating in joint research projects. Students also have the opportunity to become involved in research at or through South Carolina's Center for International Business Education and Research. When doctoral students present papers in major academic conferences, financial aid might be given to cover some of the costs.

Within the international business department, there is a computer room and an international business library for students’ use. The Moore School has a business library with an extensive collection of books, magazines and academic journals. The school subscribes to many useful electronic databases such as Datastream, Worldscope, Bloomberg, CRSP, COMPUSTAT, LexisNexis Academic, Wall Street Journal (Pro Quest Direct), EBSCO Business Source Premier, JSTOR and more. Students can download data and articles easily.

Doctoral students are required to teach one or two undergraduate business courses within their program of study. The intention is to let them gain some teaching experience before they enter the academic job market. The students will not be asked to teach many courses since their primary focus is academic research.

Besides examinations in the regular courses, students are expected to take a comprehensive examination at the end of the second academic year. In the fall semester of the third year, students are required to make a presentation of an academic paper they have written in front of the faculty and fellow doctoral students. The purpose is to encourage students to work on high-quality research papers early in the program. In the third academic year, students are expected to defend their dissertation proposal. A formal defense of the finished dissertation is made before students graduate from the program.

Curriculum Overview

SLU's international business and marketing Ph.D. program consists of 54 credits. The curricular objective is the intellectual development of students through the advancement of research skills as well as the acquisition and application of knowledge. The combination of coursework, teaching, research seminar and dissertation experience is designed to provide students with a sound foundation for productive careers as business school academicians.

In addition, international business and marketing Ph.D. students at SLU are encouraged to participate in academic and professional conferences and work with faculty to develop their research and teaching skills further.

A primary objective of this Ph.D. program is the training of students in the design and conduct of rigorous research. A distinguishing feature of SLU's Richard A. Chaifetz School of Business is our focus on preparing students to be effective teachers and mentors for the academic profession. Theoretical and methodological sophistication is achieved through coursework and research conducted with faculty and individually.

Fieldwork and Research Opportunities

Chaifetz School of Business Ph.D. students are provided the opportunity to teach undergraduate courses as part of their graduate assistantship. They are expected to complete the requirements for certification in University Teaching through the Reinert Center for Transformative Teaching and Learning.

SLU's Ph.D. in international business and marketing offers students an intensive educational experience designed to prepare them for academic careers, typically as business school faculty.

Admission Requirements

A master’s degree in business or a related field and introductory coursework in calculus and statistics is recommended. New students with limited backgrounds in business may be required to take specific coursework to ensure sufficient preparation before progressing into required courses toward the doctorate.

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis once all application materials are received. All materials are due January 15. Application files are reviewed holistically (considering the applicant's undergraduate and graduate work, professional and/or academic experience, test scores and professional goal statement).

Requirements for International Students

  • A letter of financial support from the person(s) or sponsoring agency funding the student's time at Saint Louis University
  • A letter from the sponsor's bank verifying that the funds are available and will be so for the duration of the student's study at the University
  • Courses taken and/or lectures attended
  • Practical laboratory work
  • The maximum and minimum grades attainable
  • The grades earned or the results of all end-of-term examinations
  • Any honors or degrees received.

Financial assistance for Ph.D. students in the Richard A. Chaifetz School of Business usually is available to all admitted applicants, including international students. This is primarily in the form of half-time graduate assistantships. Graduate assistants typically work 20 hours per week in teaching and/or on research. These assignments are made based on the instructional needs of the department and the requirements of the current research projects. Any student who receives an assistantship receives tuition support for a normal doctoral load (nine credits for each of the fall and spring semesters and four credits in the summer), individual health insurance, in-state status and a monthly stipend.

Accreditation

The Richard A. Chaifetz School of Business is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), the world’s largest business education alliance and accrediting body of business schools, ensuring continuous quality improvement in terms of curriculum, instructional resources, student selection, career placement and intellectual contributions and qualifications of the faculty. Approximately 5% of business schools worldwide have achieved AACSB accreditation. 

SLU's international business and marketing Ph.D. program, comprising 54 credits, aims to foster intellectual growth by advancing research skills and knowledge application. Our curriculum blends coursework, teaching, research seminars, and dissertation work, laying a solid foundation for successful careers in academia.

Furthermore, our Ph.D. students are encouraged to engage in academic and professional conferences and collaborate with faculty to enhance their research and teaching abilities.

Students must complete a set of required courses, a research minor, courses in a support area, and a dissertation that includes 12 credits of dissertation research.

Students in our PhD programs are encouraged from day one to think of this experience as their first job in business academia—a training ground for a challenging and rewarding career generating rigorous, relevant research that influences practice.

Our doctoral students work with faculty and access resources throughout HBS and Harvard University. The PhD program curriculum requires coursework at HBS and other Harvard discipline departments, and with HBS and Harvard faculty on advisory committees. Faculty throughout Harvard guide the programs through their participation on advisory committees.

How do I know which program is right for me?

There are many paths, but we are one HBS. Our PhD students draw on diverse personal and professional backgrounds to pursue an ever-expanding range of research topics. The PhD in Business Administration grounds students in the disciplinary theories and research methods that form the foundation of an academic career. Jointly administered by HBS and GSAS, the program has five areas of study: Accounting and Management , Management , Marketing , Strategy , and Technology and Operations Management . All areas of study involve roughly two years of coursework culminating in a field exam. The remaining years of the program are spent conducting independent research, working on co-authored publications, and writing the dissertation. Students join these programs from a wide range of backgrounds, from consulting to engineering. Many applicants possess liberal arts degrees, as there is not a requirement to possess a business degree before joining the program

The PhD in Business Economics provides students the opportunity to study in both Harvard’s world-class Economics Department and Harvard Business School. Throughout the program, coursework includes exploration of microeconomic theory, macroeconomic theory, probability and statistics, and econometrics. While some students join the Business Economics program directly from undergraduate or masters programs, others have worked in economic consulting firms or as research assistants at universities or intergovernmental organizations.

The PhD program in Health Policy (Management) is rooted in data-driven research on the managerial, operational, and strategic issues facing a wide range of organizations. Coursework includes the study of microeconomic theory, management, research methods, and statistics. The backgrounds of students in this program are quite varied, with some coming from public health or the healthcare industry, while others arrive at the program with a background in disciplinary research

The PhD program in Organizational Behavior offers two tracks: either a micro or macro approach. In the micro track, students focus on the study of interpersonal relationships within organizations and the effects that groups have on individuals. Students in the macro track use sociological methods to examine organizations, groups, and markets as a whole, including topics such as the influence of individuals on organizational change, or the relationship between social missions and financial objectives. Jointly administered by HBS and GSAS, the program includes core disciplinary training in sociology or psychology, as well as additional coursework in organizational behavior.

Frequently Asked Questions - Ph.D. in International Business

The following are frequently asked questions about the Ph.D. in International Business  program at SNHU.

SNHU is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education, which means that your degree carries with it international recognition.

This program is for individuals who want to earn a Ph.D. with a focus on doctoral-level scholarship in international business and research. Applicants are expected to hold a Master’s degree and may come from a variety of related fields. The campus-based program is designed for domestic and international students who wish to engage in learning alongside faculty as full-time students. Classes are typically held in the evenings and during the week.

This program has one admittance date which is the Fall term. The application deadline for this is June 30. Applications received in full after the deadline may be considered for admission into the program on a case-by-case basis.

Applications are typically reviewed by a committee of faculty. If approved in this initial review, applicants may be invited to interview for acceptance into the program.

Domestic Students :

  • Related master's degree from accredited university or college
  • Transcripts from previous universities or colleges
  • $40 non-refundable application fee (applicants may petition for a waiver)
  • 3 letters of recommendation

International Students (in addition to domestic student requirements):

Test scores are required for immediate acceptance. Prospective students can be offered conditional acceptance without test scores, converting to full acceptance upon successful demonstration of academic ability.

Due to the nature of the program, transfer credits are not accepted.

Yes, financial aid is available if a student is taking three (3) credits or more per term. A graduate student must be accepted to our program to be eligible for financial aid.

Note: International applicants must provide documentation of their ability to meet the costs of the program. These costs are indicated on the I-20 form. The costs may appear to be somewhat higher than the total of tuition and room and board because they also include such general expenses as health insurance, textbooks, pocket money, etc.

Within the program, there are opportunities to focus on specific topics of personal and professional interest. Examples include fields such as Business Analytics, Finance, Marketing, Leadership, or Information Technology.

After successfully completing comprehensive exams, students enroll each term in the doctoral dissertation colloquium. The dissertation is based on a student's research and is expected to contribute to their area of study. Each student has a dissertation committee, normally consisting of a minimum of four faculty members.

Doctoral colloquiums provide a forum for students to discuss their dissertation research and help monitor their progress in completing their dissertations. Once a student completes the research and the final draft and receives approval, they will give an oral presentation. A student must receive approval from all members of their dissertation committee in order to successfully complete the doctoral program.

The program is designed to take approximately 4 years. You have eight years to complete your program from the time you begin the first course. This includes the completion of the required course of study, comprehensive exams, and the dissertation.

On campus: Classes typically meet at night but may be scheduled during daytime periods. All classes are structured to meet face-to-face with faculty members of Southern New Hampshire University who hold a terminal degree.

9 credit(s) from subject(s): FIN IT, MKT, OL, BUS, INT, or MBA within the range of course numbers 500 - 999. Students and faculty mentors may design an area of specialization related to business fields such as Business Analytics, Finance, or Marketing to name a few. Upon successful completion of coursework, students must take a comprehensive exams and complete a dissertation. The time allotted for preparation for comprehensive exam and finalization of dissertation work vary from student to student, and may add some time to the overall duration of the program.

During most academic terms, students in this doctoral program will take two to three 3-credit courses. After the successful completion of comprehensive exams, students enroll in dissertation colloquium courses each term.

Applicants are encouraged to read articles about the field prior to applying for the program. Articles can be found in many journals including but not limited to the Journal of International Business Studies, available at the Academy of International Business website.

The answer depends on your interests and your career goals. Both degrees represent the highest level of academic achievement, and both degrees are highly respected in both the academic and business worlds. Additionally, both the PhD and DBA are advanced research degrees that involve conducting original research, analyzing data, and producing important findings.

But there are differences. The DBA is considered a professional doctorate, and the PhD is an academic doctorate.

PhD research is focused on developing theories, addressing a gap between theories, or addressing a gap in the general body of knowledge. The PhD may be more appropriate if you are focused on a faculty career in higher education or a career as a researcher in a research center.

In contrast, DBAs focus on real-world organizational and business problems and involve original and secondary research to explore, examine, and address those problems. The DBA is primarily for those focused on a career in business and consulting. However, many DBAs do teach in colleges and universities.

It’s important to note that students in either program can study real-world problems.  PhD students might use a different set of methodologies or look at the problem from a broader scope in contrast to DBA students who may focus their research on a particular industry or company with a narrower lens.  However, any topic of interest in the international business field including but not limited to, multinational companies or managers engaged in international business is likely to be a viable research area for a SNHU PhD student.

Many of SNHU PhD graduates are enjoying careers in both business and academia.  Make sure you give serious consideration to which degree best suits your needs and career aspirations.  SNHU does not currently offer a DBA.

Who's It For?

The PhD in Strategy and International Business focuses on scholarly research on topics pertaining to strategic management and international business, as well as their interfaces. Offered through the Department of Management, topics examined include corporate strategy, corporate governance, management of multinational enterprises, international entry strategies, strategic alliances, and strategy in emerging economies, among others. 

The program emphasizes student involvement in research early in their doctoral studies. Students have the opportunity to be involved in ongoing research projects under the mentorship of experienced faculty, Close interaction with faculty members enables students to quickly learn to identify and develop research ideas and create their own research agenda. Students also develop teaching competence under faculty mentorship by teaching undergraduate classes.

When applying, you need to carefully review the requirements for submitting all of your transcripts and student records. These include all post-secondary educational institutions you have attended, including technical and professional schools.

There is not a limit on the number of international students who will be accepted into the Doctoral Programs each year. Acceptance is based on academic history, test results, recommendations, and personal statement.

Financial Aid

International students who are accepted into the Wharton Doctoral Programs receive the same financial package as domestic students. Please see the Expenses & Financial Aid section of this site for additional information

Language Proficiency

The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is required if you are an international applicant whose native language is not English. Please carefully review all the requirements for the exam explained in Standardized Test Scores .

International students who are accepted into the program and whose first language is not English may be required to take the SPEAK test offered through the English Language Programs office.

This test is used to determine/confirm a student’s fluency in English. If test results indicate a student would benefit from additional language instruction, arrangements will be made for summer class work and tutoring. Students will be expected to complete this additional work to ensure their proficiency in written and spoken English in professional settings.

Immigration and Taxes

In order to maintain legal student status in the United States, international PhD students must be enrolled for a full-time course load, which means a minimum of three courses per semester. Full-time enrollment does not include audits or incompletes. Once you have completed your coursework and are working on your thesis or dissertation, you must maintain your full-time status by registering for doctoral dissertation tuition or registration.

Begin your doctoral journey by identifying and exploring a major business challenge that's directly relevant to you and not currently addressed by contemporary theories. Your research will lead you to create rigorous tools to address that problem and improve the practice of management long-term. Candidates for the Doctor of Business Administration program will receive support to generate new knowledge and become scholar-practitioners who can enhance their organizations’ performance through evidence-based practice. In addition to learning statistical methods and learning how to write three publishable papers, which can be further published in academic or practitioner outlets, you’ll also conduct two practicums. These practicums will guide students, clients, and peers from your own company and industry in recognizing, and solving, the business problem.

Conceptual Paper

This publishable paper builds upon the concepts of systematic literature reviews and theoretical foundations of researched business problems to derive novel, testable propositions from the author’s experience and extant literature.

Practicum 1

DBA students will lead a workshop to teach non-DBA students, corporate peers, and clients from their organizations. The purpose of this presentation is to strengthen students’ ability to synthesize several research phases and communicate them to non-academic audiences in a thoughtful, persuasive, and effective manner that can drive impactful change.

Quantitative Paper 1

The second publishable paper is a result of a four-course series focused on statistical analyses, data collection, visualization, and academic writing. Students build upon the conceptual framework laid out in their first paper to produce a full publishable academic paper detailing their primary research methods as it relates to their problem of practice. Students are encouraged to submit this paper to academic conferences.

Practicum 2

DBA students will lead a second workshop focusing on their conclusions from the execution and evaluation of their applied research on a problem of practice. Like the first practicum, the goal of this workshop is to drive change through impact-driven research presentations.

Quantitative Paper 2

This key program assessment is a result of a three-course sequence that trains students to identify and plan the execution of their data-driven solution. Students are also encouraged to submit this paper to academic or practitioner conferences.

Dissertation

The final dissertation is a result of a two-course sequence where students collaborate predominantly with their supervisors to update and integrate the three major academic papers into a single dissertation. Students will be required to present the written document along with an oral defense (viva) to the Dissertation Committee.

Where is the program accredited?

The Hult DBA is a US degree, accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE), a regional accrediting organization recognized by the US Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). Regional accreditation is considered the most prestigious form of accreditation in the US. As a US degree, the Hult DBA can be attested anywhere.

Can I become a professor with this DBA?

The DBA is a terminal degree and academic equivalent of a PhD, EdD, etc. DBA graduates are qualified to begin or continue a career in academia as professors and scholars. Therefore, you may apply to academic positions that require terminal degrees. Note that the Hult DBA does not offer content courses or specializations in business and management. Candidates who require postgraduate course credits to teach in this field may take additional courses separate from the DBA.

Can I choose which campus I complete my residencies on?

No. Hult DBA residencies operate in a rotational format and in a specific order.

Can I still apply if I have a master's in a non-business-related field?

Candidates without a business-related master’s degree must provide evidence of at least 12 postgraduate-level credits in business. This could be in the form of a postgraduate certificate or diploma (note that the content must be appropriate and cover all areas of business). Alternatively, you may take courses in one of Hult’s part-time MBA programs.

What is the difference between a PhD and a DBA?

A DBA, like its PhD counterpart, requires advanced research skills that lead to a dissertation or thesis and the conferral of a doctoral title. However, DBA programs often focus on the application of theory to a real-world business problem and are aimed at working professionals with years of extensive managerial experience. When will my supervisor be assigned?

Supervisor-student matches are communicated to new students immediately after matriculation.

Can I get a scholarship?

Currently, Hult does not provide scholarships for its DBA programs. Note that Hult alumni are eligible for a 10% discount.

Will I need to publish my dissertation to get my degree?

No, we do not require the publication of research output in journals. The Hult DBA requires all research output to be of publishable standard—that is, of a standard that is acceptable by top-tier journals and conferences. While you are not required to publish, students are strongly encouraged to present at prestigious conferences such as the Academy of Management (AOM) annual meetings.

What is the cost of the program? What are the payment options?

The program costs $99,000, inclusive of the confirmation deposit of $5,000 due two weeks after notification of acceptance. Students are responsible for their residency travel costs. Installment plans are available for up to six payments throughout the program. Please speak to an enrollment advisor during the application process to explore what plans are right for you.

How often will I have lectures? When are they held?

The Hult DBA is offered in a hybrid format, with a mix of live Zoom classes and three in-person residencies per year. Hybrid courses will meet once a week on Zoom along with a five-day in-person residency in one of Hult’s global campuses. Courses without a residency will meet twice a week on Zoom. Please note that course schedules are subject to change.

Can I transfer credits from a previous or current doctorate program?

Transfer credits from a previous or current doctorate are not accepted into the program.

Offered by the School of International Service   , the International Relations (PhD) program enables students to produce knowledge for careers in university teaching and research, government, and non-governmental organizations both in the United States and internationally. The curriculum provides training in international relations that is both multi-disciplinary and policy-relevant. The core courses in international relations, comparative social theory, comparative and regional studies, and methodology provide a foundation that allows students considerable flexibility to pursue additional coursework, research, and writing in international affairs. Major emphasis is placed on research and all students are required to successfully defend an original dissertation of their own design that makes a contribution to knowledge in their chosen area. In addition to completing the dissertation, students are encouraged to present conference papers, engage in collaborative work with faculty members, and submit articles to refereed journals.

Admission to the Program

Applicants for the PhD degree program must hold an accredited bachelor’s or master’s degree, or its equivalent, in a field related to international relations. Applicants must have a prior cumulative grade point average that is substantially above B (3.00 or higher on a 4.00 scale) for coursework relevant to international relations.

The program is designed for study on a full-time basis. Applicants for the PhD degree are considered and admitted only for the fall semester each year. The school does not permit students to begin their doctoral work in the spring. Deferral of matriculation in the PhD program is not permitted. In order to be considered for fall admission, applications and all supporting materials must reach the SIS Graduate Admissions Office no later than December 15.

All applicants are required to submit results of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Non-native English speakers are required to submit results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) unless they hold a degree from a US-accredited institution before enrollment at SIS. The minimum TOEFL score for full admissions consideration is 100 on the Internet-based test (iBT) or 600 on the paper-based test (PBT). The minimum IELTS score is 7.0. Applicants should plan to take the appropriate test well in advance of the December 15 deadline.

All applicants must submit at least three letters of reference which evaluate their suitability for undertaking doctoral study in international relations. At least one of those letters must assess their academic performance. Cultural factors are considered in making admissions decisions and in evaluating transcripts and examination results.

Doctoral students may transfer up to 6 credit hours of previous graduate coursework earned at accredited institutions with a minimum grade of B in each course. Such credits must have been earned within five years of admission and must be relevant to a student’s program of study. Requests for transfer of graduate credit are considered during the student’s first term.

Degree Requirements

  • 39 credit hours of approved graduate work
  • Minimum 3.00 cumulative GPA in all graduate work is required to remain in good academic standing and to earn the degree
  • Proficiency in a modern foreign language: Research competence in English and another modern foreign language relevant to the student’s career objectives must be certified
  • The first or qualifying examination is normally taken at the end of the first year. The qualifying exam requires the demonstration of competency in theoretical, epistemological, and methodological literature and issues in international relations, comparative social theory, and comparative and regional studies. These areas are addressed in the core seminars that students normally complete during their first year of residence, although the scope of the examination is not limited to topics covered in the seminars
  • A second examination, the Field Comprehensive Examination, is in a student’s chosen field of specialization. This Comprehensive Field Examination is a scholarly paper in which students must demonstrate knowledge of the scholarly literature related to a research question approved by their Field Concentration Chair. With the permission of the SIS Director of Doctoral Studies and the advice of at least three qualified scholars, the student may also construct a special field
  • The SIS Director of Doctoral Studies chairs the prospectus defense. The examiners also include the student’s dissertation committee, which is comprised of a minimum of three members, one of whom serves as chair and as the primary supervisor of the dissertation research. It is the responsibility of the student to secure the agreement of a full-time tenured member of the School of International Service faculty to serve as the chair of his or her dissertation committee. At least two members of the dissertation committee must be full-time, tenure-line members of the American University faculty. The members of the committee must be approved by the SIS Director of Doctoral Studies and the American University Doctoral Council
  • Students are normally expected to complete their prospectus defense no later than the end of the sixth semester after entering the program. For details on scheduling comprehensive examinations and examination procedures, consult the director of the PhD program or the SIS Graduate Office
  • Advancement to candidacy: To be advanced to candidacy, students must remedy any deficiencies specified at the time of admission, complete all graduate work, be certified as proficient in a modern foreign language in addition to English, have passed their written and oral examinations, have submitted certification of completion of Responsible Conduct of Research training, and have successfully defended their dissertation prospectus
  • Students must present a completed draft of their dissertation for defense. They are responsible for ensuring that the final draft of their dissertation meet university style requirements. Dissertations must be approved by the dean of the School of International Service
  • Statute of limitations: American University’s academic regulations provide that all graduate work for the doctorate must be completed in no more than nine years after the date of first enrollment as doctoral student. Prior to the expiration of that time limit, a student may petition for an extension of candidacy. Under compelling circumstances, students may apply for one-year extensions beyond the expected time to degree, with a maximum of three extensions. Students must petition the SIS Director of Doctoral Studies for each one-year extension; each extension must also be approved by the SIS Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Graduate Education and the Vice Provost for Graduate Studies and Research

With approximately 50 students engaged in coursework or research, the PhD program is an integral and vibrant component of the Fletcher community. Working alongside our world-renowned faculty, Fletcher doctoral candidates acquire the theoretical and practical skills needed to produce research that will help shape future discourse on international relations. After completing their degrees, graduates go on to successful high-level careers in academia and research, and in the non-profit, government, and private sectors.

After completing their degrees, doctoral graduates go on to successful high-level careers in academia and research, and in the non-profit, government, and private sectors.  They make their impact on an array of fields, often maintaining a presence in both academia and practice.

Fletcher PhD students move through three program phases on their way from admission to graduation. They start with classes, arranged within a structured curriculum that still allows significant flexibility in course selection. When their class requirements are complete, students take comprehensive exams, and then move on as PhD candidates to research and write a dissertation.

Shaping Your PhD Through Coursework

In shaping their curriculum, students start with a primary field of study, through which they develop a depth of expertise unique to their interests. The primary fields of study that support PhD studies are:

  • Comparative and Regional Studies
  • Gender and Intersectional Analysis
  • Human Security and Humanitarian Affairs
  • International Business
  • International Development and Environmental Policy
  • International Security

Students build on their primary field of expertise by developing a breadth of foundational knowledge in a second field of study, which can be any of the  fields offered at Fletcher  or might be a self-designed field. Regardless of their choice of field, all students also pursue foundational courses in international relations theory and in research methodology. The two fields of study later become the basis for comprehensive exams.

Students seeking additional opportunities to individualize their studies may cross-register for up to a quarter of their classes at another graduate school at Tufts University or at Harvard University.

Students who have received their master's degree at another institution generally pursue twelve courses at Fletcher, with limited opportunities to have prior coursework applied to their degree. Those who possess a MALD generally pursue an additional four courses, for a total of twenty courses for the two degrees.

Demonstrating Knowledge Through Comprehensive Examinations

Students demonstrate mastery of their subjects through comprehensive examinations, composed of a written exam in each of the two fields of study and an oral exam that integrates the material from the two areas. Students generally sit for their comprehensive examinations within a year of completing their coursework.

Developing and Writing a Dissertation

Once they have passed their comprehensive exams and achieved PhD candidacy, students move on to propose, research, and write a dissertation. The completed dissertation should bear evidence of independent research and constitute a substantial contribution on the subject. When the dissertation is complete, the PhD candidate participates in a public oral defense of the dissertation.

Additional Graduation Requirements

In addition to the steps detailed above, students in the PhD program:

  • Demonstrate proficiency in a second language.
  • Submit a master's thesis for evaluation by a Fletcher faculty member. This could be a master's thesis written prior to enrollment at Fletcher, or a thesis written during the first year at Fletcher.

Length of Time Required to Receive the PhD

Once they have completed their coursework, PhD students generally take about five years to complete the degree, but the exact time varies according to the scope of each candidate's research, the amount of time devoted to PhD studies, and the time needed to research and write the dissertation.

Professional Development Opportunities

Fletcher's Office of Career Services  works with PhD students interested in a career in international relations practice. Our graduates have pursued careers at a wide range of institutions and organizations. For those focused on the academic job market, Fletcher offers support at a variety of levels. Fletcher faculty and the Office of Career Services support job candidates with career advice, professional development, and general assistance.

To develop teaching skills, students can participate in Tufts University’s three-week summer intensive  Graduate Institute for Teaching  and then to co-teach a class with a faculty mentor. Many students have also developed and taught classes in the University’s  Osher Institute  or  Experimental College .

PhD-Program: DIBT / Doctoral Program in International Business Taxation

We are proud to announce that the WU has a “Doctoral Program in International Business Taxation” (DIBT) that is going into its 12th year. This is a 3-year PhD program offered in English only, and it is open to outstanding students from all over the world who are interested in an excellent doctoral education preparing them for doing research in international business taxation. The Doctoral Program provides high-quality interdisciplinary training for graduates in the field of international taxation, including and combining the disciplines of public finance, international tax law and cross border tax management. Although students will write their doctoral thesis in their own discipline (law, business, public finance, economic psychology), they will be exposed to intensive interdisciplinary discussions during their stay in Vienna. The opening of traditional tax training to other disciplines, such as economic psychology, history, political science, ethics and legal philosophy (always in the context of taxation), promotes a broadening of horizons and a more comprehensive approach to research questions. Best possible standards in both research and teaching are guaranteed by a faculty of renowned scholars, who have published in the most prominent journals of their respective research fields and have proven willingness and ability to do interdisciplinary research. The most distinguished professors in tax law, business administration and public finance are either on the faculty of this program or have agreed to teach courses, give workshops or to discuss research ideas and preliminary research results with the PhD students in Vienna. Students will be integrated into the research activities of the WU institutes dealing with taxation issues. During the first year, students will be required to attend many comprehensive courses to provide the basic knowledge necessary for research within their own discipline as well as for interdisciplinary research. The second and the third years will be dedicated to seminars on theories and methods and perspectives on taxation, a research stay abroad, additional optional workshops, and especially to research on the thesis. Throughout the three years, a research seminar will supplement the students’ training. We will admit a very limited number of students every year. For them tuition fees will be waived and they will be provided with the best possible conditions for conducting research. The DIBT continues to be supported by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) and for a certain number of students we are therefore able to provide funding for their three-year stay at WU in Vienna! RIT graduate pursues Ph.D. across time zones

Nastaran Nagshineh is one of the first Ph.D. candidates to bridge RIT’s Rochester and Dubai campuses. Her accomplishment creates a path for future students at the university’s international campuses.

Nagshineh completed her Ph.D. in mathematical modeling while working full time as a mathematics lecturer at RIT Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, teaching as many as five classes a semester. She described her Ph.D. journey as “an exercise in perseverance” due to competing demands and long days. Rochester is eight hours behind Dubai, and the time difference meant many late-night classes and meetings.

“I saw this collaboration as an opportunity, rather than as a challenge, because my primary adviser, Dr. Steven Weinstein (RIT professor of chemical engineering), and my co-adviser, Dr. Mohamed Samaha (RIT Dubai associate professor of mechanical engineering), both have the same area of research interest,” she said. “They both worked toward my success.”

Nagshineh is one of 67 RIT Ph.D. students who defended their thesis this academic year and who will earn their doctorate. RIT awarded 63 Ph.D. degrees in 2023.

In 2020-2021, RIT’s Graduate School met and surpassed the university’s goal of conferring 50 Ph.D. degrees during an academic year. That number will continue to grow as students cycle through the seven new Ph.D. programs that RIT has added since 2017, said Diane Slusarski , dean of RIT’s Graduate School.

Meeting these goals puts RIT on a path toward achieving an “R1,” or research-intensive designation, from the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Learning. RIT is currently ranked as an R2 institution . Many factors go into changing a university’s status, including research investment and maintaining a three-year average of 70 Ph.D. degrees awarded per year, according to Slusarski.

“We have met the goals of the strategic plan, and now we look forward to contributing to the research innovation in the future,” Slusarski said. “We want to help the new programs thrive and win national research awards.”

RIT’s emphasis on high-level research is seen in Nagshineh’s Ph.D. work. She applies mathematical modeling to the field of fluid dynamics. Her research has been published in top-tier journals and has gained notice, said Weinstein, her thesis adviser.

Weinstein describes Nagshineh’s accomplishments as “a testament to a fantastic work ethic and commitment” and is inspirational to younger students at Rochester and Dubai.

“The collaboration between RIT Dubai/Rochester has continued,” he said. “Another paper was submitted a few weeks ago with Mohamed Samaha and Nate Barlow (RIT associate professor in the School of Mathematics and Statistics) as co-authors, as well as Cade Reinberger, a younger Ph.D. student in my research group.”

Mathematical modeling is one of RIT’s newer Ph.D. degree programs, and Nagshineh is among its earliest graduates. The program has doubled in size since it began accepting students in 2017, Slusarski said. This past fall, the mathematical modeling program had 35 students, with two graduating this year.

Altogether, RIT has 13 Ph.D. degree programs currently enrolling 438 students, with computing and information sciences accounting for the largest with 117 students. RIT’s other Ph.D. programs include astrophysical sciences and technology , biomedical and chemical engineering , business administration , color science , electrical and computer engineering, imaging science , mechanical and industrial engineering , microsystems engineering , and sustainability .

New programs in cognitive science and physics will launch in the fall.

The growth in RIT graduate education—with more than 3,000 master’s and doctoral students—reflects a demographic change in the student population, Slusarski said. “We have a higher percentage of women in the graduate programs than we have for RIT undergraduate programs.”

RIT’s graduate programs enroll 42 percent women, according to Christie Leone , assistant dean for the Graduate School.

Nagshineh, who also holds an MS in electrical engineering from RIT Dubai, welcomes her role as a mentor to other women students on both campuses.

“As a young woman in an Arabic country, the power of women is often underestimated and undervalued, and I hope to serve as a role model to female students, especially those that question their path,” Nagshineh said.

She plans to continue in her career as a professor and a researcher. “I would like to pursue a research program where I can advise my own students and teach them more deeply.”

USI online Master of Business Administration Program earns top 20 ranking by Fortune Education

The University of Southern Indiana Romain College of Business Master of Business Administration (MBA) Program has been ranked 20th in Fortune Education’s Best Online MBA Programs for 2024. The USI MBA Program has earned consistent accolades for its online program and affordability by Fortune, U.S. News & World Report and multiple other outlets.    

“We are thrilled our faculty, staff and students have earned this recognition for the transformational work being accomplished through the USI MBA Program,” said Dr. Jack Smothers, Master of Business Administration Director. “Most importantly, students are learning to lead motivated teams in the workplace, create valuable products and services and implement ethical solutions for sustainable operations. We are proud of our impact on business practice and thankful for the opportunity to work with leaders of today and tomorrow.”      

Dr. Michael Dixon, Dean of the School of Graduate Studies, added: “Interest in USI’s MBA continues to increase. Prospective students from across the United States and from countries around the world regularly submit inquiries and applications to our MBA Program. The program's faculty, students and graduates are generating this interest. Recognition by Fortune Education underscores that quality.”   

USI’s MBA Program is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), considered the “gold standard” for business accreditation. The affordable program can be completed in as few as 12 months with six start dates each year and is offered fully online or with a mixture of online and on-campus classes. We often hear from our graduates that the experiences they gain while pursuing their USI MBA greatly increase the pipeline of opportunities available to them.
