Key Information

The National Eligibility Test (NET) for research fellowships is conducted by the University Grants Commission (UGC) . Students of Social Sciences and Humanities , including the Languages and Sciences stream, are eligible to participate in the doctoral-level scholarship program. Moreover, as per the JRF scholarship eligibility, candidates who have scored 55% (50% for SC/ST/PwD and Transgender) in their master's degree can also apply.

The NET JRF scholarship amount of INR 37,000 is provided to students who are pursuing an M.Phil / Ph.D. degree . The NET JRF scholarship 2023-24 last date is September 5, 2024 (tentatively) .

NET JRF Eligibility Criteria 2023-24

Students must clear the required eligibility criteria to apply for the scholarship. The general conditions of eligibility for the National Eligibility Test- Junior Research fellowship are as follows.

Candidate must have passed post-graduation from a government-recognized university or institute.
General (E.W.S.) category applicants must have secured a minimum of 55 percent marks or equivalent grade in a master’s degree.
O.B.C., ST/SC, P.W.D., or Transgender category students must have obtained 50 percent marks in the master’s program.
Degree holders who have completed their master’s examination by 19th September 1991 are eligible for appearing N.E.T. with 5 percent relaxation in the marks percentile.
Applicants waiting for P.G. results and those pursuing master’s degrees are eligible to apply for the UGC NET exam.
In such a case, the candidate will only be considered for the admission of J.R.F. and Assistant professor once they pass the master’s degree with the required percentile within 2 years from the N.E.T. result date.
General category applicants should not be more than 30 years old .
There is no age limit criteria for the Assistant Professor program.
Age relaxation of 5 years will be given to candidates of O.B.C., ST/ SC, P.W.D., Women, and Transgender.
5-year age relaxation is also given to applicants with 5 years of research experience and candidates from the Armed Forces.
Applicants with an L.L.M. degree can avail of the age relaxation of three years .

NET JRF Rewards and Benefits 2023-24

The fellowship amount and duration can be extended if the research work has been observed as satisfactory by the concerned department of the college or university. The UGC revised rates of fellowship amount are as follows.

INR 37,000 per month will be given to each Junior Fellow for the first 2 years.
INR 42,000 per month will be given for remaining tenure (SRF).

Contingency A - Humanities and Social Sciences

INR 10,000 per year for the first two years (JRF).
INR 20,500 per year for the remaining tenure (SRF).

Contingency B - Science

INR 12,000 per year will be given for two years (JRF).
INR 25,000 per annum for the remaining tenure (SRF).

Reader Assistance/ Escorts

For blind candidates and physically handicapped, INR 2,000 per month shall be granted as a special allowance.
In case the accommodation is provided by the host institution, rent paid by the candidate shall be reimbursed as per the government of India norms.
The fellow may be entitled to draw HRA on the basis of the categorization of cities if they make their arrangement of accommodation.
HRA is not permissible for hostellers. However, candidates are only eligible to draw hostel fees, excluding electricity, water, mess charges, etc.
No separate medical assistance is provided.
In addition to public holidays, 30 days of leave per year will be granted to each fellow.
Maternity/ Paternity leaves will be given as per government rules.
Intermittent Break of one year will be given to eligible women candidates; this can be availed 3 times during the fellowship.
One year of academic leave without fellowship is permissible throughout the tenure.

Note : Expenditure on any foreign visit in connection with research work will not be reimbursed from UGC.

NET JRF Application Process 2023-24

Detailed steps on how to apply for UGC NET-JRF are given below.

Visit the official National Testing Academy (NTA) .
Click on UGC NET in the Quick Links section.
Fill up the online application form.
Enroll in all the required information.
Get the application number for future reference.
Upload the scanned image of the applicant’s photograph (It should not exceed 200 kb)
Upload the signature in a scanned image (The signature size should be between 4 kb – 30 kb)

Note : All the scanned images must be in JPEG/ JPG format.

Pay the fee through SBI/ HDFC/ ICICI/ Syndicate or Paytm payment gateway through net banking/ UPI/ debit card or credit card.
Print 4 copies of the confirmation page after the successful fee payment.

Selection Criteria for National Talent Hunt Examination for Junior Research Fellowship

NET JRF candidate selection process is based on the following criteria.

Applicant should qualify for the UGC NET Exam with minimum marks of eligibility percentile.
It is mandatory to secure minimum marks in both papers 1 and 2.
A merit list shall be generated for qualified candidates.
The top 6 percent of fellows will be entitled to the Assistant Professor post.
The remaining candidates are eligible to avail of the NET Junior Research Fellowship.
In each UGC-NET exam around 3200 fellowships are being provided by the commission.
NET JRF slots are categorized and allocated among different subjects.

UGC NET-JRF Mode of Exam

The exam will consist of two papers, paper 1 and paper 2, consisting of 100 and 200 marks, respectively. Students can refer to the details below for more information regarding the questions and mark allocation.

Paper 1 is of 100 marks with a duration of o ne hour.
There will be 50 objective type questions with 2 marks each .
The paper will cover the research and teaching aptitude of the candidate.
It will test the general awareness, comprehension, reasoning ability and divergent thinking of the candidate.
There will be a total of 200 marks in paper 2 with a test duration of 2 hours.
There will be 100 objective type questions with 2 marks each .
Paper 2 is a subject-oriented test, it is based on the particular subject selected by the applicant.

Exam Timing

Paper-I: 09.30 AM to 10.30 AM
Paper-II: 11.00 AM to 01.00 PM

(09.30 am to 01.00 pm first shift and 02.00 pm to 05.30 pm second shift)

Note : The total duration of examination is 3 hours (180 minutes). No break time will be given between paper 1 and paper 2 examination.

Fellowship Terms and Conditions 2023-24

The terms and conditions listed below have to be adhered to during the tenure of the fellowship.

Selected candidates must join the fellowship program within 6 months from the date of the award letter.
Applicants are requested not to send any documents or completed application forms to NTA.
More than one application from a candidate is not entertained.
Admit cards for the UGC NET examination should be downloaded from the NTA website.
A minimum of 40 percent marks in both the papers of the NET examination is required to be eligible for the research fellowship.

While we can’t find information on who said these words, we can’t help but laugh! You, a student pursuing your doctoral degree, may even laugh at it because there’s a grain of truth to it. Your doctoral dissertation, after all, will likely be about creating new knowledge or building on old knowledge because “nobody knows anything” in a manner of speaking.

But why are you pursuing a doctoral degree when your master’s degree will suffice for most jobs? There are even people who believe that it’s a waste of time and money for many reasons. Some people push for it because of the numerous benefits that it brings.

So, which one’s a better perspective? A doctoral degree is about contributing to the existing body of knowledge through original research. It is considered an introduction to independent research in your chosen field, with your doctoral dissertation as the first of many intellectual masterpieces .

Let’s first take a look at the unfavorable view because there’s also some merit to it. For one thing, there’s the cost of doctoral education that, in U.S. universities, the average is $133,340 . In Ivy League universities, the cost can be higher – at Harvard University, for example, the full tuition needed for the first two years of study is $54,032, exclusive of health insurance, housing, books and supplies, and food expenses.

Yes, indeed, it isn’t cheap to get a doctoral degree in the United States , not even in one of the lesser-known universities!

In addition, there’s a sense of dissatisfaction among doctoral students. You may feel, at one point, that you’re doing slave labor, no thanks to the 10-hour workdays and low pay during your research.

Your employment prospects may also seem uncertain, considering the competition due to the oversupply of Ph.D. holders. The number of Ph.D. holders exceeds the number of employment opportunities for them, too! ONS Foundation Josh Gottheil Memorial Stem Cell Transplant Development Award

The Rotary Foundation Global Grant Scholarships

The Rotary Foundation Global Grant Scholarships program is open to full-time Ph.D. students involved in peace and conflict prevention or resolution, disease prevention and treatment, and water and sanitation. Applications can be made via a local Rotary Club chapter, and the chapter must sponsor non-Rotarians applying for the scholarship. The chapter creates the applicants’ initial application, and the latter then completes the online scholar profile.

The amount can be used for various costs, including passport/visa, travel expenses, tuition and other fees, vaccinations, school supplies, room and board, and household supplies. Application is year-round. However, scholarship applications for August, September, or October studies must be submitted by 30 June.

YIVO Dina Abramowicz Emerging Scholar Fellowship: Intended for post-doctoral research focus on Eastern European Jewish Studies.
YIVO Aleksander and Alicja Hertz Memorial Fellowship: The Fund supports research on Polish-Jewish history, including modern relations, the Holocaust, and Jewish contributions to Polish literature and culture.

Every fellow is also required to deliver a public lecture regarding their research. The research period should be between 2 and 3 months only. Interested applicants should submit a written summary of their respective research on acceptable topics.

YIVO – Fellowship in East European Jewish Studies

Amount: $18,000 stipend

The combined Professor Bernard Choseed Memorial Fellowship and the Natalie and Mendel Racolin Memorial Fellowship come with many benefits. Aside from the financial stipend, three months of free access to the YIVO Library and Archives are also offered for research. They, on the other hand, will be required to deliver at least two public lectures on Jewish studies.

The NEF/Johnson and Johnson Health Equity Scholarship program promotes the research, advocacy and clinical practice of nursing professionals interested in underrepresented groups and addressing the health inequalities and disparities in these populations.
The AJN/Thelma Schorr Scholarship program has a preference for nurses with nursing leadership potential.

ACS, the nation’s largest private, not-for-profit organization funding scientists and doctorates studying cancer, offers grants and fellowships managed by the Extramural Discovery Science (EDS) team. The Post-doctoral Fellowships are designed to help new investigators in research training programs, preparing them for independent careers in cancer research. Program funding includes

progressive stipends of up to $70k for up to 3 years,
an annual fellowship allowance of $4k, and
a $1,500 travel fund.

The application is open to U.S. citizens or non-citizens with an appropriate visa and within four years of obtaining a doctoral degree.

Granted in partnership with Eugene P. & Clara M. Smith Mathematics Education Research Fund, the Early Career Research Grant accepts applications from doctoral candidates pursuing math education degrees. The grant must be used in supporting their doctoral research project, preferably projects that bridge research and practice.

Note that early career math educators or those who have completed either an EdD or PhD in math education or other related fields within the past five years are eligible to apply. Doctoral students will only be considered if they have advanced to candidacy status in accredited programs.

Newberry Consortium in American Indian Studies Faculty Fellowship

Amount: $5,000/month (Long-term fellowship for 4-9 months); $5,000/month (Short-term fellowship for a month only)
Deadline of Application: November 1, 2024 (Long-term fellowship); December 15, 2024 (Short-term fellowship)

The American Indian Studies Faculty Fellowship is intended for scholars in the early stages of their careers who are involved in American Indian studies, specifically research in the Newberry Consortium collections. Doctoral students are welcome to apply. The monthly stipend can be used for a wide range of education-related expenses, too.

Fellows receive the NCAIS research carrel and other fellowship privileges, as well as perform responsibilities related to their research. These include research presentations, seminar participation, and consultation with other NCAIS Graduate Student Fellows.

AIA Fellowship for Study in the U.S.

The Archaeological Institute of America (AIA) offers post-doctoral research fellowships for archaeologists working at Deutsches Archäologisches Institut (DAI) or its project collaborators. The fellowships are for either fall 2024 or spring 2025 in selected universities, including the University of Cincinnati, the Joukowsky Institute at Brown University, or the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA).

Fellows are provided with financial support for travel expenses, a stipend for living expenses, and residency at a university housing or rental housing, as well as library privileges. The residency lasts for 2-3 months only, during which time the Fellows are expected to give a minimum of one lecture at their respective host university.

Applications should include a duly filled-up online application form, a curriculum vitae, and two references, among others.

National Gem Consortium Ph.D. Engineering Fellowship

Amount: $16,000 living stipend for the first academic year plus a paid summer internship

The National GEM Consortium in Engineering Fellowship is open to Ph.D. students belonging to the minority, and who have been accepted into a doctoral program straight from a bachelor’s degree program or who have earned a master’s in Engineering. Fellows can be enrolled in any of the participating GEM member universities.

The above-mentioned stipend applies to the first academic year of fellowship for a Ph.D. Engineering/Science Fellow. After that, the fellow will enjoy a continued living stipend up to the fifth year of Ph.D. studies through a combination of alternative funding sources. The fellow will also have his tuition and fees paid for by the GEM university member.

American Association of University Women American Fellowship Summer/Short-Term Research Publication Grants

Amount: $8,000–$50,000
Deadline of Application: November 30, 2024

The Summer/Short-Term Research Publication Grant is the oldest female-specific scholarship program for graduate students. Of course, only female graduate students are considered, and they must either be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Applicants should also be available for eight consecutive weeks during the summer.

The American Association of University Women’s selection committee applies strict criteria in choosing the annual crop of scholars. The criteria include academic excellence, project originality, project design quality, project scholarly significance to the discipline, and project feasibility. Patty and Paul Levi Research Award

The Patty and Paul Levi Research Award, offered by the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation, grants a predoctoral student or students annually. Norman S. Baldwin Fishery Science Scholarship

Norman S. Baldwin, the inaugural executive secretary of the Great Lakes Fishery Commission, guided the organization for 15 years until his untimely passing in 1971. The Norman S. Lawren H. Daltroy Preceptorship in Health Communication

The Lawren H. Daltroy Preceptorship in Health Communication from the Rheumatology Research Foundation supports student, researcher, and clinician training in rheumatology. You need to have a relevant master’s degree to be able to apply for this scholarship by Apr. 1, 2022. Besides the scholarship application, you have to submit a 500 to 1,000-word essay or a two to five-minute video that describes your aspirations to conduct projects, research or other opportunities to increase intercultural understanding.

PhD Scholarship 3: Vanderbilt University

Qualified PhD applicants can apply for the University Graduate Fellowship by Jan. 15, 2022 in order to be nominated by their department. They will receive a stipend of up to US$5,000 for up to three years of their PhD studies.

PhD Scholarship 4 and 5: Washington University in St. Louis

Below are two scholarships – both with a deadline of Jan. 25, 2022 – offered to students wanting to apply to the Graduate School, Washington University in St. Louis:

Chancellor’s Graduate Fellowship

Graduate students with strong academic records, and a keen interest in diversity and service can apply for this Chancellor’s Graduate Fellowship where they will receive academic, professional and personal support. You need to have a US undergraduate degree and have a desire to become a college or university professor.

Fellowship winners enjoy an annual stipend of US$36,720 (2021-22 rate), full tuition coverage, an educational allowance of US$1,500 and priority housing.

Spencer T. and Ann W. Olin Fellowship for Women in Graduate Study

This Fellowship – co-sponsored by the University and the Monticello College Foundation – is especially created to encourage more women to take up graduate study, and serve society afterwards.

The successful recipients will receive an annual stipend worth US$36,720 and a US$600 travel award besides full tuition remission throughout their programme.

PhD Scholarship 6: University of Minnesota Twin Cities

The University of Minnesota Twin Cities is well recognised as one of the most famous public research universities in the US. Over 50,000 students study at this university, which spans five campuses including the main Twin Cities campus.

The Diversity of Views and Experiences (DOVE) Fellowship Programme is available for exceptional research graduate students with diverse life and educational backgrounds who are underrepresented within graduate programmes.

They need to be nominated first by the Director of Graduate Studies in their respective graduate programme; they will get a stipend worth US$25,000, academic tuition for up to 14 graduate-rate credits per semester, health insurance subsidy and dental care.

PhD Scholarship 7: University of Texas at Austin

The University of Texas at Austin – ranked as the top public university in Texas (Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2019) – has other high rankings including being #14 Public University (US News and World Report 2019). Their global world ranking is #67 (QS World University Rankings 2022) as well.

Through this Donald D. Harrington Graduate Fellows Programme Fellowship , recruited talented students are envisioned to share their knowledge and success with future generations. A stipend of US$40,000 for 12 months, tuition and required fees, an allowance for student medical insurance, and US$2,000 for miscellaneous expenses make up this generous funding package; the deadline is Jan. 24, 2022.

The following universities and institutions have not indicated any deadlines for their graduate fellowships, but you can contact them for further information.

PhD Scholarship 8: University of Oregon

As a Tier-One National Public Research University and being the top public university in Oregon (for first-year retention and graduation rates), the University of Oregon attracts over 22,000 students. It has nine schools and colleges.

The International Cultural Service Programme is an annual tuition waiver scholarship ranging from US$9,000 to US$35,000 for up to 15 credits per term. Winners are required to do cultural service in the form of presentations about their home country to children, community organisations and the university’s students and faculty.

PhD Scholarships 9 and 10: East-West Centre

The East-West Centre , established by the US Congress in 1960, is a nonprofit organisation acting as a US-based institution for public diplomacy in the Indo-Pacific region. Located adjacent to the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa (UHM), the centre’s Honolulu campus spans 21 acres.

Below are two Fellowships – established since 1999 through the Y. S. Lee Family Endowed Fellowship Fund and worth US$5,000 each – available for graduate students.

Wing-tsit Chan Graduate Fellowship in Chinese Philosophy

For students interested in Chinese philosophy, they can apply for this fellowship. They need to be nominated by the UHM Philosophy Department and selected by a committee that includes representatives from the East-West Centre’s Education Programme, the department’s Graduate Committee, and a member of the UH Center for Chinese Studies Executive Committee.

Ah Kin (Buck) Yee Graduate Fellowship in Chinese Studies

The recipient should ideally have been accepted for full-time graduate study in any field of Chinese studies. You need to apply via the University of Hawaii’s Student Scholarships website.

REVISED Junior Research Fellowships (JRF through CSIR-UGC NET) guidelines w.e.f. from 1st March 2023

a) The EMR Division under HRD Group of Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) provide CSIR Research Fellowships and Associateships to bright young men and women for training in methods of research under the expert guidance of faculty members/scientists working in University Departments/Institutes of National Importance/National Laboratories and Institutes of CSIR in various fields of Science & Technology and Medical Sciences. List of CSIR Laboratories is at Annexture-I .

b) The CSIR Fellowships/Associateships are tenable in Universities/IITs/Post- Graduate Colleges/ Government Research Establishments including those of CSIR, R&D establishments of recognized public or private sector, industrial firms and other recognized institutions.

c) The CSIR Fellowships/Associateships are tenable in India. Only bonafide Indian citizens, residing in India are eligible for the award of research Fellowship/Associateships. The programme is aimed at National Human Resource Development for S&T.

d) The award of CSIR Fellowship/Associateships is for fixed tenure and does not imply any assurance or guarantee for subsequent employment by CSIR to the beneficiary. The authority to award/ terminate vests with CSIR. The awardee shall not lay claim to permanent absorption in CSIR, after the expiry of Fellowship/ Associateship.

2. SUBJECT OF RESEARCH

Preference is given to a subject/topic of research relevant to the research programme of CSIR laboratories and nationally important S&T areas.

3. ELIGIBILITY FOR CSIR JUNIOR RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP (JRF)

A large number of JRFs are awarded each year by CSIR to candidates holding BS-4 years program/BE/B.Tech/B. Pharma/MBBS/Integrated BS-MS/M.Sc. or Equivalent degree/BSc (Hons) or equivalent degree holders or students enrolled in integrated MS- Ph.D program with at least 55% marks for General & OBC (50% for SC/ST candidates, Divyangjan (PWD)) after qualifying the National Eligibility Test ( NET) conducted by CSIR normally twice a year in June and December.

Candidates with bachelor’s degree, whether Science, engineering or any other discipline, will be eligible for fellowship only after getting registered/enrolled for Ph.D/integrated Ph.D. programme within the validity period of JRF-NET certificate which is two years from the effective date of fellowship as mentioned in the JRF- NET certificate.

Candidate enrolled for M.Sc. or having completed 10+2+3 years of the above qualifying examination are also eligible to apply in the above subject under the Result Awaited (RA).

4. APPLICATION PROCEDURE

On-line applications for JRF-NET are invited normally twice a year on all India basis. The information with respect to inviting applications is also made available on HRDG website : www.csirhrdg.res.in .

5. AGE LIMIT

The upper age limit for applying for the award of JRF shall be 28 years, which is relaxed up to 5 years in the case of candidates belonging to Schedule Castes/Schedule Tribes/Divyangjan (PWD) and female applicants whereas 3 years in the case of OBCs (Non-creamy layer candidates).

6. SELECTION PROCEDURE

The Selection for award of JRF shall be made on the basis of a competitive written test called the National Eligibility Test (NET), conducted by CSIR at national level normally twice a year in the following areas (1) Chemical Sciences (2) Earth, Atmosphere, Ocean and Planetary Sciences (3) Life Sciences, (4) Mathematical Sciences, and (5) Physical Sciences. From June 2011, CSIR has introduced a Single MCQ (Multiple Choice Question) Paper based test comprising of three parts. Part-A shall be common to all subjects comprising question on General Science and Research Aptitude. Part-B shall contain subject-related conventional MCQ and Part-C shall contain higher value questions that may test the candidate’s knowledge of scientific concepts and/or application of the scientific concepts. Negative marking for wrong answers shall be done.

The Fellowship is awarded on receipt of necessary details of the qualifying degree examination, proposed place of research work, research topic, the name of supervisor and the concurrence of the Institution to provide all the necessary facilities. The validity of the JRF-NET certificate is two years from the effective date of fellowship as mentioned in the JRF-NET certificate and will not be extendable.

Application format of the undertaking by a Research Fellows/Associates on acceptance of the Award of Research Fellowship/Associateship is at Annexture-II .

7. PHD REGISTRATION AND TERMINATION OF FELLOWSHIP

(a) JRF-NET qualified Graduate Candidates

Candidates with Bachelor’s degree, whether Science, Engineering or any other discipline, will be eligible for fellowship only after getting registered/enrolled for Ph.D/Integrated Ph.D. programme (Ph.D registration certificate is at Annexture-III within the validity period of two years of JRF-NET Certificate from the effective date of fellowship as mentioned in the JRF-NET certificate.

(b) JRF-NET qualified Postgraduate Candidates

CSIR Junior Research Fellows should register for PhD within a period of two year ( PhD registration certificate is at Annexure-III ) from the date of joining their fellowship, failing which they will not be upgraded to SRF on completion of two years. However, CSIR may consider giving extension for an additional period of one year as JRF-NET or the fellowship can be terminated based on the recommendations of Three Member Assessment Committee. The Committee may consist of the Guide, Head of the Department and External Member from outside the University/ Institution who is an expert in the relevant field, not below the rank of Professor/ Associate Professor. As far as possible the External Member should be the chairman of three members Committee. Further, where the guide happens to be the Head of the Department, the Dean, Faculty of Science or any senior member of the Department may be associated as the third member of the Committee. If prior to completion of third year, the fellow is not registered for PhD, the JRF-NET fellowship will be terminated on completion of third year.

(c) The Fellowship shall stand terminated from the date of PhD viva-voce or from the date the Fellow resigns and his/her resignation has been accepted by CSIR or on completion of tenure. The fellowship may also be terminated if the institution where it is tenable refuses to provide facilities to the fellow on disciplinary grounds and so informs CSIR.

8. STIPEND & TENURE

(a) The stipend of a JRF selected through CSIR-UGC National Eligibility Test (NET) will be Rs 31,000/ p.m for the first two years. In addition, annual contingent grant of Rs. 20,000/- per fellow will also be provided to the fellow .The guidelines for utilization of contingent grant are given in ( Annexure-IV ).

(b.I) If the Fellow is registered in PhD within the stipulated period of 2 years and Progress is satisfactory:

If the fellow is registered for PhD within the stipulated period of two years, then on completion of two years as JRF, he/she will be required to submit the work/progress report within six months for upgradation to SRF (NET). On the basis of assessment of Fellows’ research progress/ achievements through interview by an Expert Committee consisting of the Guide, Head of the Department and External Member from outside the University/Institution who is an expert in the relevant field, not below the rank of Professor/Associate Professor and on the recommendation of the said expert committee, the JRF will be upgraded to the position of SRF on the monthly stipend of Rs. 35,000/- for the 3rd and subsequent years. As far as possible the External Member should be the chairman of three members Committee. Further, where the guide happens to be the Head of the Department, the Dean, Faculty of Science or any senior member of the Department may be associated as the third member of the Committee ( Annexure-V ) and ( Annexure-VI ).

(b.II) If the Fellow is registered in PhD within the stipulated period of 2 years and Progress is not satisfactory:

If the fellow is registered for PhD within the stipulated period of two years and submits his/her work report within six months of completion of the sanctioned tenure but his/her work/progress report is not found satisfactory by the Three Member Assessment Committee, the Committee may recommend him/her to continue as JRF for third year on the monthly stipend of Rs. 31,000/- or may recommend the termination of fellowship. If the fellow continues as JRF for third year, the progress of research work of JRF will be assessed again by duly constituted three-member assessment committee at the end of third year for upgradation. If the work of JRF is still not found satisfactory for upgradation by the Committee, then the fellowship will be terminated.

(b.III) Fellows and host institutions are strongly advised to complete the Assessment and submit the report timely to avoid delays. Nonetheless, to minimize the hardship to students, fellows are given six months from the time of completion of the second year of JRF to submit the Assessment Evaluation Report. During this period (six months) he/she shall be getting fellowship of JRF, subject to submission of online attendance certification by Host Institute on the portal as usual procedure for fellowship. Once the Assessment committee recommends for SRF upgradation they may receive SRF fellowship and arrears if any. However, it may be noted that in the event of the non receipt of Assessment Evaluation Report within six months period upon completion of two years of JRF fellowship from the host institute, the stipend of fellow shall automatically be stopped and resumed only when the requirements are fulfilled. However, in the case of non-receipt of the three-member assessment committee report even after completion of Two years and six months, the tenure of the JRF may be continued further for six months on the condition that an undertaking by the concerned institution assuring that they would conduct the three-member assessment committee and submit the report in the next six months. In case assessment report is not received till the end of the third year, the fellowship shall stand terminated without further notice. The decision of CSIR in this regard shall be final.

(b.IV) If the Fellow is not registered in PhD within the stipulated period of 2 years:

In the event of non-registration for PhD by the fellow within the stipulated period of two years, he/she will not be eligible for upgradation to SRF but the fellow can be recommended to continue as JRF for the third year by the assessment committee. The progress of research work of JRF and PhD registration status will be assessed again by duly constituted three-member assessment committee as described above at the end of third year for upgradation. If the fellow is still not registered for PhD and/or work of JRF is not found satisfactory for continuation into third year as JRF, the fellowship will be terminated.

(c) Extension of tenure for the fourth and fifth year extension of SRF (NET) will be on the basis of the progress report ( Annexure-VI ) and recommendation of the guide.

The annual progress report for continuation from third to fourth and from fourth to fifth year may be maintained by the Host Institute. After confirmation of the submission of the requisite reports on the portal by the Maker/Checker, HRDG shall process the fellowship for the fourth and the fifth year.

The fellows and host institutions are strongly advised to submit the reports in advance such that no delays in fellowships are encountered. However, the fellows and host institutions will be given an additional six months from the last date of the third and fourth year respectively for submission of the requisite report. During this six months fellowship may continue pending the submission of the requisite reports. After six months, if the confirmation of receipt of the report is not received on the portal, the fellowship to all such fellows will not be released.

The confirmation of the receipt of the report both for continuation to fourth and fifth year on the portal by the Maker/Checker shall be full and final and the Host Institute is fully accountable for correctness of the details. In case of any discrepancy/incorrect information submission by the Host Institutions leading to any undue payment etc., the entire responsibility shall be with the Host Institutions to refund the related amount, with interest, to CSIR.

Non-compliance of CSIR norms for submission of annual progress report along with other requisite documents within six months after completion of yearly tenure may result in termination of fellowship/associateship .

(d) The total tenure as JRF plus SRF(NET) will not exceed five years. This will include the tenure of Fellowship awarded by UGC/DST/DBT/ICMR/ICAR etc. or any other funding agency/Institution. The order for continuation at the same rate of stipend as SRF(NET), continuation at the same rate of stipend as JRF or otherwise will be issued by the EMR Division of HRDG, CSIR. Extension may also not be granted if the fellow does not acknowledge the support of CSIR in his/her research publication(s).

(e) A Research Fellow who joins on the first day of the month, his/her tenure will be completed on the last day of the previous month. In other cases the, tenure will be completed on the last day of the same month of joining the Fellowship.

9. AWARD OF FELLOWSHIP AND RELEASE OF GRANTS

(a) The Fellowship will be awarded to the selected applicants by a formal letter giving details of the grant and the conditions governing it, under intimation to the University/Institution, which forwarded their applications. The tenability of JRF-NET certificate is two years from the effective date of fellowship as mentioned in the JRFNET certificate and a NET qualified JRF-NET should avail the fellowship within two years i.e. within the validity period of JRF-NET certificate. The fellowship grant money is payable on monthly basis whereas the contingency will be reimbursed annually directly to the research fellow based on submission of the online claim.

The first payment (monthly stipend) will be made after the issue of formal award letter by EMR through the portal. The Maker/Checker/Authorized Officer at the Host Institute shall obtain the Attendance Certificate of the respective fellows of their institutions and based on the same shall certify the attendance on the portal and uploading of attendance certificate is discontinued henceforth. The attendance details submitted by the Maker/Checker on the CSIR portal shall be final and the bill shall be generated and processed by HRDG accordingly. The submission of the attendance details on the portal by the Maker/Checker shall be full and final and the host institute is fully accountable for correctness of the details. In case of any discrepancy/incorrect information submission by Host Institutions leading to any undue payment etc., the entire responsibility shall be with the Host Institutions to refund the related amount with interest, to CSIR. The Host Institutes shall maintain the requisite records of attendance submitted through CSIR portal at their level.

(b) The contingency grant will be reimbursed to the fellows subject to submission of the claim online on the CSIR portal through Maker/Checker on annual basis. The Fellows are required to submit the original bills to Host Institute and Host Institute shall verify the expenditure and ensure that all expenditure should be as per CSIR guidelines. The accounts should be maintained by the grantee institution for the research fellow on ledger type system as per Annexure-VII . The host Institute shall be responsible for compliance of CSIR-HRDG guidelines issued on contingency grant from time to time. CSIR reserve the right to inspect or call for the Bills/Vouchers as and when required.

10. CONTINGENT GRANT

An annual contingent grant of Rs.20,000/- per fellow is provided to the Research Fellow on reimbursement basis . For less than one year, the contingent grant will be admissible on pro-rata basis. The grant may be utilized in the interest of research work. The maximum amount of contingency admissible to a fellow shall be restricted to maximum Rs. 20000/- in a year. Further, request (claim) for reimbursement of contingency grant of the previous financial year(s) will not be entertained. The guidelines for utilization of the contingent grant are given in Annexure-IV and reimbursement claim form at Annexure-VIII .

11. PROGRESS REPORT

The preparation of annual progress report on the research work done shall be essential part of the Fellow’s work. Each Research Fellow shall submit his/her annual research report in the prescribed proforma ( Annexure-VI ) within a period of six months after completion of one-year tenure to its Host Institute. It is essential to give up to-date and full information against all the columns of Annexure-VI . The results should be presented quantitatively in Tables/Figures and discussed in terms of the objectives and conclusions drawn should also be given. Fragmentary reports shall not be entertained. The progress report should be always accompanied by copies of published papers, re- prints and pre-prints of papers accepted for publication, manuscripts of papers communicated for publication duly acknowledging financial assistance of CSIR. The publishing of research papers is only desirable and not mandatory. Fellows should be discouraged from publishing in predatory journals. Noncompliance of CSIR norms for submission of annual progress report along with other requisite documents within six months after completion of yearly tenure may result in termination of fellowship/associateship. The Host Institutes shall maintain at their level the requisite records of Report (Annual Progress Report for continuation to fourth year and Annual Progress Report for continuation to fifth year) . CSIR reserve the right to inspect or call for the reports as and when required.

12. PUBLICATION/PATENT

(a) Publication: The results of Fellow's research work may be published in standard refereed journals at the discretion of the Guide. IT SHOULD BE ENSURED THAT THE ASSISTANCE PROVIDED BY CSIR is ALWAYS ACKNOWLEDGED IN ALL SUCH PUBLICATIONS. One copy of the published research papers may be submitted on the portal.

(b) Patent: The commercial exploitation of the results and ownership of patent rights pertaining to investigations concerning the intellectual work of the CSIR research fellows/associates will be as follows:

(i) Public funded educational/research institution, to which a fellow is associated, may seek patent right at their own cost and/or commercial exploitation of the results of the investigation concerning the Intellectual work of the fellow and all rights would vest exclusively with the Institution concerned. All matters concerning ownership of IP and its licensing/exploitation would be governed by the IP policy of the concerned institutions.

(ii) In case an institution, to which a fellow is associated, is not in a position to seek patent rights and/or commercial exploitation of the results of the investigation concerning the intellectual work of the fellow, CSIR at its own cost may seek the patent rights and/or commercial exploitation of the results of the intellectual work of the fellow and all rights would vest exclusively with CSIR. 13. OBLIGATIONS OF RESEARCH FELLOW

a) He/She has to be a full time researcher and submit himself/herself to the disciplinary regulations of the University/ Institute/ Laboratory where he/she is working. Regular attendance of the fellow may be ensured by the department by keeping an attendance register.

b) In case a fellow decides to appear for competitive examination, he/she would invariably seek permission from the guide and this information may be kept with the Host Institute.

c) The Research Fellow is not to take any assignment other than related to his/her approved research programme, paid or unpaid. However, if required, the fellow may assist the host institute in its academic work/other activities, as per guidelines of its PhD programme, provided such assignments should not hamper the progress of research work of the fellow.

d) Once a Research Fellow accepts the Fellowship and joins, it is incumbent on him/her to continue the research for the normal tenure of the fellowship or for such lesser duration in which the original objectives of the research problem have been achieved.

e) No Fellow shall discontinue his/her Fellowship without prior approval of CSIR. In case he/she wishes to discontinue the fellowship prior to completion of the tenure on attainment of original objectives of research, he/she must submit the resignation to CSIR through the Guide one month in advance, indicating specific reasons for not continuing the Fellowship. The Fellowship shall cease from the date stipulated in the CSIR letter approving the resignation.

f) The research Fellow must send a detailed consolidated report of the research work done during the entire period of Fellowship on completion of the tenure/resignation of the Fellowship through the Guide to CSIR, in the prescribed proforma ( Annexure-IX ), within one month.

g) During the tenure of the Fellowship, the Fellow shall correspond with CSIR only through the Guide with the approval of the Head of the Institution.

h) The Research Fellow shall keep CSIR informed about his/her getting the higher degree, submission of thesis for Ph.D., MD, MDS, MS, MPhil, ME etc. and submission/acceptance/publication of any research paper arising out of the research work done during the tenure of the fellowship. He/She must acknowledge the support of CSIR in the publication(s). One copy each of all the research papers published must be submitted to the host institute and uploaded on CSIR portal at each stage of publication/ manuscript/reprint.

14. TEMPORARY TEACHING & RESEARCH JOB

A Research Fellow on the recommendation of Guide, and provided that his/her University/ Institute has no objection, may be permitted by CSIR to take up temporary paid lectureship/research job in a recognized R&D Institution/University, College/Institute of repute/Recognized R & D Institution/ PDF studies in India & abroad for a period not exceeding one year during the entire tenure of the Fellowship (JRF & SRF together). The Research Fellow will not be entitled to any extension of the Fellowship for such periods. The Fellow will not be entitled to stipend and contingency grant during such leave. Such leave period will be counted in the tenure. Such leave can be taken only after joining and working as Research Scholar at least for one year. Fellow has to report for duty at the same place from where he proceeded on leave.

15. LEAVE

a) Leave with stipend not exceeding 30 days for each completed year of tenure may be allowed by the Guide after the request has been communicated to CSIR. The leave will be treated as part of the Fellow’s tenure. The leave due can be carried over to the next year, however not more than 90 days can be accumulated at any time during the tenure. Of this not more than 30 days can be availed in a calendar year with stipend and beyond that any leave will be treated as “Leave Without Stipend”. During the first year of Fellowship or any uncompleted year, leave may be granted on pro-rata basis. Sanction of leave without stipend may be considered by CSIR under special circumstances. In case a Fellow proceeds on leave before expiry of Fellowship tenure, he/she must join back before the expiry of tenure; failing which the tenure will be deemed to have terminated with effect from the date he/she proceeded on leave. The fact of joining back from leave should be communicated to CSIR immediately. As the CSIR releases the grant in advance, therefore, the amount on account of “Leave Without Stipend” has to be refunded to CSIR at the end of a financial year or adjusted against the fresh claim, if any.

b) The Guide can grant leave to a Fellow in his/her charge with the concurrence of the Head of the Institution/Department if the leave is due as prescribed in para 15(a) above. If leave is not due, such cases will be decided by CSIR only. The Fellow should not be allowed to proceed on leave to visit abroad for attending conferences/seminars etc. without prior approval of the CSIR well in advance. The entire duration of such foreign visits if funded by any national/international agency, whether partially or fully, would be treated as leave without stipend.

c) Women Fellows with less than two surviving children are entitled to full stipend plus HRA, during the period of absence180 days on grounds of maternity. Such leave shall be sanctioned by the Guide under intimation to CSIR. The Fellowship amount for leave period will be paid after the fellow resumes duty and submits a medical certificate in support of actual confinement. It is expected that the Fellow will make up for the research work during the remaining tenure.

d) Male Fellows of CSIR with less than two surviving children are entitled for 15 days paternity leave during confinement of his wife on submission of relevant documentary proof.

16. TRANSFER OF FELLOWSHIP

The fellow should carefully choose the host institution, guide/supervisor, availability of necessary infrastructural and other research facilities etc. to carry out his/her research before joining. Request for transfer of fellowship will not be entertained except on compelling circumstances for which the fellow & his/her guide should submit proper justification. The No Objection Certificate should be produced by the Fellow/ Associate from supervisor and Head of Department of University/Institute from where transfer is sought and consent of the Guide/Host Institute where Fellowships is sought to be transferred by giving reasons of transfer. No fellow will be allowed to join another institute without seeking prior approval from CSIR for "transfer of fellowship" and if he/she joins elsewhere without approval of CSIR, his/her fellowship will be terminated. Fellowship/Associateship will stand terminated from the date of resignation. Further, no transfers will be allowed in the last six months of the tenure of fellowships & also after submission of Ph.D. thesis.

17. TERMINATION OF FELLOWSHIP

(a) Junior Research Fellowship /Senior Research Fellowship will be terminated from the date of viva-voce of PhD or on completion of fellowship tenure, whichever is earlier. The fellowship shall also stand terminated from the date the Fellow resigns and his/her resignation has been accepted by CSIR. The Fellowship may be terminated by the CSIR on the recommendation of the Supervisor and Head of the Department/Institution. The fellowship may also be terminated if the institution where it refuses to continue to provide facilities to the fellow on disciplinary grounds and so informs CSIR.

(b) If a fellow leaves without permission, stipend due at any time shall not be paid to him/her. The Universities/ Host Institutions must not raise any claim of Fellowship in r/o those fellows who resign or whose termination of fellowship is under consideration at any stage. The entire onus of raising such claims lie upon the Host Institutes and any extra payment made to the fellow due to such undue claims received from the Host institutes are recoverable in full along with interest from the Host institute.

(c) The unspent balance of grant lying with the Institution at any time due to termination/resignation/transfer of fellowship of a Fellow/Leave sanctioned without stipend/interest earned on grants released by CSIR must be refunded to CSIR immediately by online payment mode i.e. NEFT/RTGS.

(d) Research Fellows must settle their fellowship claims within one year of leaving the Fellowship. No claim will be admitted by CSIR after the time admissible under the rules.

18. ACCOMMODATION / HRA

All Research Fellows may be allowed hostel accommodation wherever available and those residing in hostel provided by University/Institute will not be eligible for HRA. Reimbursement of hostel fee is not permissible. Where this is not possible, house rent allowance will be allowed as per the rules of the host institutions. In no case it should exceed the rates payable to Central Government Employees in that area. The basis for calculating HRA will be the actual stipend of the Research Fellow.

19. MEDICAL BENEFITS

(a) No separate/fixed medical assistance should be provided. However, the fellow may avail of the medical facilities available in the institution/university/college, without any financial liability on CSIR. This will be limited to the fellow only and not to his/her family members/dependents.

(b) The host institute may get the fellows/associates medically examined at the time of joining or thereafter.

20. OTHER TERMS AND CONDITIONS

(a) CSIR may send whenever considered necessary its officers for reviewing the work of the fellows and Associates, inspection of accounts, attendance, etc, in Universities/Institutes where the Research Fellows/Associates are placed.

(b) Any kind of paid or honorary, part-or-full-time employment or private practice even in honorary capacity is not permissible during the tenure of Fellowship/ Associateship.

(d) These terms and conditions supersede all previous instructions issued in regard to JRF/SRF/RA. However, any relaxation would require approval of DG, CSIR. In all matters decision taken by CSIR shall be final.

Funding & Scholarship: Graduate Programs

Financial support for ph.d. students, all students admitted into our ph.d. program receive full financial support., this support includes tuition, fees, $1,000 in transportation and dental subsidies (as of ay24-25), and a cost-of-living stipend ($3655 per month in ay23-24 and $4083 per month before taxes in ay24-25)..

Support is independent of need provided a student remains in good academic standing and is making satisfactory progress towards his/her Ph.D. degree. Students are expected to complete their Ph.D. requirements in four to six years. Financial support takes several forms: fellowships, teaching fellowships, and research assistantships. Ordinarily, first-year Ph.D. students are supported with full fellowships so that they can devote their time to coursework.

For the class entering in Fall 2024 : SEAS PhD students are expected to complete two sections of teaching in SEAS in their second year or spread across their second and third years. Both sections may be completed concurrently in a single course. Their research assistantship will be adjusted accordingly during the semester(s) in which they are teaching fellow (TF). The academic requirement for the PhD degree is one section of teaching in SEAS. The student and their research advisor may arrange to replace the second section of teaching with a research assistantship. Beyond the first year, when students are in a better position to teach and assist in research, support is ordinarily provided through research assistantships, or a combination of a teaching fellowship and a research assistantship. External financial support for Ph.D. students

Applicants and current students are encouraged and expected to apply for all non-Harvard scholarships for which they are eligible, especially those offered by the National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program and National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship (NDSEG) .

Each year, many SEAS students secure fellowships from external agencies. Should an incoming student be awarded and accept any fellowship external to Harvard, it is the expectation that the student will utilize these funds in the first year of study in place of Harvard funding. In advanced (G2+) years in the graduate program, students with external fellowships are advised to have a discussion with their financial aid officers from Harvard Griffin GSAS and SEAS about how to best utilize the remaining years of funding based on their activities and academic requirements.

To ensure equitable treatment of all students, the coordination of external award benefits with a student’s existing funding package is determined by the Harvard Griffin GSAS financial aid officer in consultation with SEAS.

PhD students with external support are eligible for a SEAS-sponsored academic incentive. PhD students who bring in open, competitive external fellowships that are equal to 50% or more of total their support (tuition/fees + stipend) will receive a supplemental award of $3,000 in the first year of the external fellowship. PhD students who bring in open external competitive external fellowships that are not 50% or more of their total support and are at least $10,000 (tuition/fees + stipend or salary) will receive a supplemental award of $1,000. The full $3,000 bonus may also be awarded in certain cases of multi-year fellowships depending on the total amount of support provided.

Financial support for terminal masters students (M.E. & S.M.)

While financial aid is not available for master’s students in our M.E. and S.M. programs, there are a variety of funding opportunities available. SC Scholarship aims to support the scheduled caste (SC) students to enable them to pursue their higher studies without any financial constraints. The Department of Social Welfare and Empowerment, Government of India along with its subsidiaries at the state level offer a number of SC scholarships. These scholarships aim at providing suitable financial assistance to students who are economically disadvantaged and meritorious. SC scholarship is divided into pre-matric, post-matric, Rajiv Gandhi national fellowship, and overseas scholarship.

SC Scholarship 2024 – Pre-Matric Scholarship for students of Class 9 & 10

This SC scholarship is offered by the Government of India and implemented by the State Government or Union territories (UT). The objective is to financially support the students of Class 9 & 10 to reduce the dropouts due to lack of funds thereby enabling them to continue their higher studies. The amount of financial assistance that each scholar will receive under this scheme is given hereunder.

Pre-matric SC scholarship awards

Eligibility Criteria:

Students should belong to the Scheduled Caste (SC) category.
Parents’ annual income should not exceed ₹2,50,000 per annum.
The students should not get any other funds from the central government.
The applicant should be a regular student in a Government school or school recognised by the Government or Central/State Board of Secondary Education.

Application Process:

The students should apply via the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) or respective state portals.
The following documents should be uploaded along with the main application: passport size photo, self-attested copies of certificates, diploma, degree etc., caste certificate, & income declaration.

Selection Process:

All eligible SC students will be awarded the scholarship. The candidates will be selected based on the fulfillment of eligibility criteria.

SC Scholarship 2024 – Post-matric scholarships

The post-matric scholarships are centrally sponsored schemes implemented through state governments. This SC scholarship scheme provides financial assistance to Scheduled Caste students at the post-matriculation or post-secondary stage to enable them to complete their studies.

The following table provides information on the scholarship award that each selected scholar will receive:

Post-matric SC scholarship awards

Apart from maintenance allowance, the students will also get reimbursement for non-refundable fees, study tour charges, thesis typing/printing charges, book allowance, and book bank facilities.

SC students enrolled in post-matriculation or post-secondary courses in recognised institutes/universities/colleges can apply for this scholarship.
The annual family income of the student’s parent(s)/guardian(s) should not exceed ₹2,50,000 per annum
The application form can be filled online via the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) or the respective state portal.
The candidates need to make sure to upload scanned required documents such as self-attested copies of certificates, diplomas, degrees etc., and caste certificates and income declarations.

All SC candidates are eligible subject to the application of means test.

SC Scholarship 2024 – Rajiv Gandhi National Fellowship for SC

The Rajiv Gandhi National Fellowship or RGNF scheme is funded by the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment for SC students. There are 2,000 scholarships granted to SC students per year. The students should be enrolled in universities recognized under the University Grants Commission (UGC). The fellowships are specifically for M.Phil. and PhD students.

Award details of Rajiv Gandhi National Fellowship

A student belonging to the SC category only can apply.
They must be admitted to an MPhil/Ph.D. degree in a university or academic institution.
Students can fill an online application at the UGC official website.
The application is filled in two parts: (1) personal details and (2) academic qualifications and research experience.
Applicants need to upload scanned copies of the following documents: mark sheets and institute certificate (all in PDF or JPG format).

SC Scholarship 2024 – National Overseas Scholarship for SC

Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India launched the National Overseas Scholarship initiative for supporting SC students/professionals who are financially constrained to be able to study abroad via this fellowship. Students or professionals belonging to the SC category who wish to pursue a master’s or Ph.D. in overseas institutes are eligible to apply.

The fields of study covered under this SC scholarship scheme are engineering and management, pure science and applied science, agricultural science and medicine, international commerce, accounting finance, humanities, social science, and fine arts. The government issues 100 scholarships out of which 30% are allotted to female applicants. There are 90 scholarships and 4 passage grants for SC category. The duration of the award for PhD students is 4 years and for master’s students is 3 years.

Awards details of National Overseas Scholarship

The selected candidate will need to execute a bond on a non-judicial stamp paper before a notary for the actual amount to be spent by the Government of India on the candidate. The candidates shall not change the course of study or research while availing the scholarship.

Applicants belonging to the Scheduled Caste (SC) category can apply.
They must be below the age of 35 years.
The applicants must have secured more than 60% marks in their last qualifying examination.
The annual family income should not exceed ₹8,00,000 per annum.

SC Scholarship 2024 – Top Class Education Scheme for SC Students

Initiated by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, this scheme offers financial support to SC category students who have taken admission at the undergraduate or postgraduate level. The key objective of the scheme is to recognize and promote quality education beyond Class 12 among SC students.

A total of 1,500 scholars are awarded under this scheme. The detail of financial assistance given under this scheme is given below.

Award Details of Top Class Education Scheme

Full tuition fee and non-refundable charges up to ₹2,00,000 per annum (for private sector institutions and up to ₹3,72,000 per annum (for private sector flying clubs for Commercial Pilot Training and Type Rating Courses)
Living expenses of ₹2,220 per month
Books and stationery charge up to ₹3,000 per annum
One-time assistance of ₹45,000 for Computer/Laptop with UPS and Printer
The scheme is open for SC category students who have completed Class 12.
They must have taken admission in a full-time undergraduate or postgraduate course in a notified institution through general selection criteria prescribed by respective institutions.
They must belong to a family where the annual income is not more than ₹6,00,000 from all sources.

Lewis, 37, a Marine Corps pilot, was one of three service members killed on Aug. 26, 2023, when their Osprey MV-22B crashed during a training operation on Melville Island, 50 miles off the coast of Darwin in northern Australia.

Lewis earned his B.S. in Aviation: Military before being commissioned to the United States Marine Corps, where he led a decorated military career as the recipient of two Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, the Navy Unit Commendation, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and four Sea Service Deployment Ribbons.

Lewis is survived by his wife, Meredith (’08), and their three daughters, Lydia, Nora, and Eliana. Meredith Lewis plans to attend the Charlotte race along with Norm Lewis, Toby’s father, as well as his brother, Ron Lewis, and sister, Charissa Jones.

This will mark the seventh year in a row that Byron, 26, who is pursuing his B.S. in Strategic Communication through Liberty University Online Programs , will race the No. 24 Chevy with the name of a United States service member who died in defense of their country emblazoned on the windshield.

The Memorial Day weekend event will be the seventh of 12 races in the 2024 season for which Liberty University will serve as a primary sponsor of the No. 24.

Coming off his Cup Series career-best season in 2023, in which he won six races, qualified for the Championship 4 for the first time, and finished third in the final points standings. Byron started the 2024 season by winning the DAYTONA 500 on Feb. 19 . He followed that by winning the pole and taking the checkered flag at the season’s first road course race on March 24 at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, before winning the April race at Martinsville Speedway, which featured a 1-2-3 finish by Hendrick Motorsports drivers Byron, Kyle Larson, and Chase Elliott.

Byron finds himself in a very similar situation as he was before last year’s Memorial Day weekend race in Charlotte, where he placed a career-best second on his home track.

He has already clinched his sixth consecutive playoff appearance by winning three races, tied for most in the NASCAR Cup Series. Byron moved up two spots to fifth in the season’s driver point standings after his sixth-place showing at Sunday’s Goodyear 400 at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway. His eight top-10 finishes are tied with teammate Alex Bowman for the season high.
