Essay Clinic

The Essay Clinic is for you if you need help with a single piece of work such as an essay or report (between 1000 and 5000 words)

It works like this:

  • We meet in person (or talk over the phone or Zoom/Skype) for an initial free consultation to discuss your work
  • You provide me with a copy of what you have done so far and any guidelines or instructions you have
  • I send you a comprehensive critique, including a list of practical recommendations for how to improve your essay
  • You redraft your work, incorporating my recommendations
  • You send me your next draft for review
  • We meet in person (or via Zoom/Skype) for one hour to discuss

Not sure this clinic is right for you? Do you have a bigger (or smaller) piece of work? Get in touch to see how else I might be able to help you.

For catastrophic coverage, SFM recommends purchasing insurance or joining a Healthcare Sharing Ministry. DPC members usually are able to choose higher deductible coverage, ultimately saving significantly on healthcare costs.

Why Direct Primary Care?

Looking for a better health care option? We can help. Dr. Story takes a few minutes to explain why Direct Primary Care could be a game changer for your family or business.

"It's like having a doctor in the family"

Our patients say..., "exactly what i needed", "never felt more confident".

"I had the opportunity of being one of Dr. McCabe's first patients.  He and the office staff were very professional, thorough, compassionate, and quickly helped make referrals.  I was impressed by his personal follow up text and phone calls to check on me.  Story Family Medicine is exactly what I needed at a time when I changed to a higher deductible insurance.  Now I am recommending them to my friends and family." Rhonda

"I can’t believe that this model isn’t more prevalent! We are saving hundreds a month on insurance and have so much more access to medical care. I love not having to evaluate whether it’s worth it to take my children to the doctor. Balancing your child’s health against your finances feels terrible and I no longer have to do it! Dr Story and Jenny are so prompt and in the first month have already helped us with well child checks, minor infections and emergency issues. They are kind, efficient and competent. I have never felt more confident in my medical coverage than I do now. No wondering if I am going to get a bill in three months, no waiting rooms and no barriers to actually speaking with my doctor." Caitlin

"Warm, caring, and capable"

"Went with my son to Dr. Story for his routine physical exam which is required for sports eligibility. Dr. Story was remarkably thorough yet without being fussy. He also displayed a wonderful combination of professionalism and personalized interest and care. I have experienced routine doctor visits that seemed to be like passing through an assembly line, but this experience with Dr. Story stood out in stark contrast. Warm, caring, and capable." Chris

PODCAST: HISTORY UNPLUGGED J. Edgar Hoover’s 50-Year Career of Blackmail, Entrapment, and Taking Down Communist Spies

The Encyclopedia: One Book’s Quest to Hold the Sum of All Knowledge PODCAST: HISTORY UNPLUGGED

Joseph Stalin’ Show Trials: A Short Summary

Stalin Show Trials Summary

Joseph Stalin’s show trials were common during his political repressions, such as the Moscow Trials of the Great Purge period (1937–38). The Soviet authorities staged the actual trials meticulously.

The trials were held against Stalin’s political enemies, such as the Trotskyists and those involved with the Right Opposition of the Communist Party. The trials were shams that led to the execution of most defendants. Every surviving member of the Lenin-era part was tried, and almost every important Bolshevik from the Revolution was executed. Over 1,100 delegates to the party congress in 1934 were arrested.  The killings were part of Stalin’s Great Purge, in which opportunists and Bolshevik cadres from the time of the Russian Revolution who could rally opposition to Joseph Stalin were killed. He did so at a time of growing discontent in the 1930s for his mismanagement of the Soviet economy, leading to mass famines during periods of rapid and poorly executed industrialization and farm collectivization.

Prominent Americans could even be found to defend Stalin show trials, a spectacle of political theater so transparent that it would have taken genuine effort not to see through it. In order to terrorize Communist Party members into absolute submission and at the same time eliminate potential rivals, Stalin put on a series of high-profile trials in which prominent Communists confessed to treachery against the Soviet Union. In some cases, people were coaxed into making these confessions by threats against their families if they refused. One by one some of the most loyal Communists , dating back to the days of the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution, solemnly admitted to counterrevolutionary activity. George Orwell could hardly have improved on this eerie and macabre spectacle.

Yet there were those on the American Left who supported Stalin and vouched for the authenticity of the trials. In 1938, some 150 Americans prominent in the entertainment industry signed a statement in support of the verdicts reached in “the recent Moscow trials.” According to the expert opinion of these Broadway stars and assorted glitterati, the trials had “by sheer weight of evidence established a clear presumption of the guilt of the defendants.” As if this weren’t bad enough, people who knew better said the same thing. The U.S. ambassador to the Soviet Union, Joseph Davies , insisted to the American government that the trials were genuine, a claim he stood by in his 1941 book Mission to Moscow. He told the New Republic, “We see no reason to take the trial at other than its face value.” The proceedings, he said, had uncovered the “virus of a conspiracy to overthrow the [Soviet] government.” Duranty, for his part, described it as “unthinkable” that Stalin could have sentenced his friends to death “unless the proofs of guilt were overwhelming,” and wrote of his conviction that “the confessions are true.”A

After Stalin’s death, Soviet premier Nikita Khruschev repudiated the trials in a speech to the Twentieth Congress of the Russian Communist Party:

The commission has become acquainted with a large quantity of materials in the NKVD archives and with other documents and has established many facts pertaining to the fabrication of cases against Communists, to glaring abuses of Socialist legality which resulted in the death of innocent people. It became apparent that many party, Government and economic activists who were branded in 1937–38 as ‘enemies,’ were actually never enemies, spies, wreckers, etc., but were always honest Communists … They were only so stigmatized and often, no longer able to bear barbaric tortures, they charged themselves (at the order of the investigative judges – falsifiers) with all kinds of grave and unlikely crimes.

Students in the Community Law Clinic represent clients throughout the Second Judicial District in family law matters, including divorce and custody cases; petitions to obtain domestic violence protection orders; actions to establish and enforce child support; guardianships; and terminations of parental rights and adoptions. Students have also served as guardians ad litem on behalf of minors, and in guardianships over incapacitated or disabled adults. In addition to family law matters, students advise and represent tenants having disputes with their landlords, assist individuals with changing their names, defend clients in consumer debt actions, and draft simple wills.

The clinical program seeks to provide students with meaningful real-life experiences while offering high-quality legal services to underrepresented members of the community.

Students may gain experience in the following five clinics.

  • Community Law Clinic represents clients in a wide variety of cases, including misdemeanor defense, family law, consumer protection and landlord-tenant disputes.
  • Immigration Litigation & Appellate Clinic students help immigrants who may be seeking asylum, permanent resident status, citizenship, status under the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) and relief from removal. They represent clients in administrative courts and before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Students also conduct educational programs in immigrant communities.
  • Family Justice Clinic is a partnership to provide free legal services to victims of domestic and sexual abuse referred from FACES to the clinic. Students handle all aspects of representation of survivors, including gathering all information needed to determine the legal issue at hand and which, if any, legal services will be provided.
  • Entrepreneurship Law Clinic assists small and start-up businesses referred to the clinic by the Idaho Small Business Development Center. Clients include both for profit and nonprofit companies in a variety of business areas. Students perform legal services, such as preparing formation and organizational documents, employee agreements and more.
  • Low Income Taxpayer Clinic pairs students with those in need of tax assistance.

frogging

ROLLA, Mo. – Fishing and frog gigging are two summer activities that can help connect people with the outdoors.

Young outdoor enthusiasts between the ages of 8-15 will have a chance to learn about these activities at a Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) clinic July 1 at Maramec Spring Park in Phelps County. The clinic will be from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. and will focus on trout fishing and frog gigging.

This workshop is limited to 10 participants and will have a unique sign-up process. To participate, children in the qualifying age range must write an essay about why they should be selected to participate in this clinic. Their essays can include details on why they're interested in trout fishing and frog gigging what they want to learn about these activities.

“Many of our MDC regional staff have a personal interest in frog gigging,” said MDC Conservation Educator Dwight Warnke. “I want to share that interest and a love of fishing with kids who maybe would not get the opportunity to learn how to gig frogs or catch fish anywhere else. I also wanted to add just a bit of competitiveness to this clinic with the essay contest.”

Essays must be submitted to Warnke at [email protected] . The deadline for essay submissions is noon on June 24. The 10 participants who are selected will be notified with full details of the clinic. The essays must include the participant’s:

  • Date of birth
  • Home address
  • Email address of parent or guardian
  • Phone number

The essay should be 100 words in length. (Word count should not include the above-listed information.)

The 10 participants selected will get instruction in trout fishing and frogging and will also have hands-on opportunities to try their skills. Participants will also learn how to clean frogs and trout and prepare them for cooking on a campfire.

MDC staff will provide fishing and gigging equipment needed for the event. Attendees should bring footwear suitable for walking/wading in shallow water. Options that will work are knee boots, hip boots, chest waders, or old tennis shoes that are suitable to be in water. No sandals. Participants should also bring a headlamp (or flashlight) and bugspray. A parent or guardian must be present during the entire event.

Information about this event can be found at:

https://mdc-event-web.s3licensing.com/Event/EventDetails/201181 .

People can also get more information about this program and directions to Maramec Spring Park by emailing [email protected] or by calling the MDC Rolla Office at 573-368-2225.

What is Interventional Pain Management?

Finding relief from pain can lead to a more fulfilling life. We work in partnership with you to address the root cause of your pain, utilizing techniques like trigger-point injections and nerve blocks to alleviate your pain.

Each member of the Interventional Pain Clinic team is certified in Non-Surgical Pain Management, working with patients on an individual basis to identify and address the root cause of their pain without the use of opioid-based prescription drugs.

Our Interventional Pain Clinic is integrated into the Gritman Medical Center hospital and clinic network. About Our Services:

Gregory Bauer is the lead CRNA at Gritman's Interventional Pain Clinic, which provides pain management services.

Read about the newly expanded Gritman Interventional Pain Clinic .

We offer pain management options, including:

  • Chronic Pain Treatments
  • Cooled Radiofrequency Ablation
  • Epidural Steroid Injections
  • Facet, Epidural, Trigger-Point and Joint Injections
  • Occipital Injections for Headaches
  • Sympathetic Blocks
  • Medial Branch Nerve Blocks

How is Gritman’s interventional pain management different from others in the region? To offer the region and our patients the best surgical options and interventional pain management, we have partnered with Panhandle Anesthesiology Associates to provide expanded and top-of-the-line anesthesia care and pain management. We now have four full-time Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) who are all certified in Non-surgical Pain Management. Our CRNAs have more than six decades of combined experience.

Does the clinic prescribe or manage medication? Yes. We can prescribe non-opioid medications shown to alleviate pain. If opioids are needed, we’ll refer you to your primary care provider for a medication evaluation.

What should I expect when receiving an injection? Will it hurt? You’ll be offered medication to help you relax. A Registered Nurse will then escort you to the operating room and get you comfortable. Using X-rays, we find the exact place for the injection and then numb your skin in that area. The injection takes 10 minutes or less and since the area is numbed, there is only a slight discomfort. You can go home shortly after the procedure, however, you’ll need a driver because of the calming medicine.

What can I expect after receiving an injection? You should feel immediate pain relief, which may improve over the next week. For best results, injections are usually given in a three-part series with a one month gap between each visit.
