  • JustRemote.

(Editor's note: Robin Madell has been a contributing writer at FlexJobs and Remote.co.)

Launched in 2007, FlexJobs was created specifically to help professionals find remote and flexible jobs. The site's founder, Sara Sutton, explains she was inspired to start FlexJobs because she had been looking for a remote opportunity with a flexible schedule while pregnant and was discouraged by how many bogus job sites there were in this niche.

FlexJobs' staff researches what they identify as the best job listings for professional positions in more than 50 career fields worldwide. Opportunities are part-time , full-time, on a flexible schedule and on an alternative schedule. Positions range from entry-level to executive-level. FlexJobs provides client support for members and a money-back guarantee. Pricing starts at $2.95 for a 14-day trial.

Remote.co , a FlexJobs partner also founded by Sutton, describes itself as a site for "all things remote work." It offers sections for employers to post remote jobs and for job seekers to find those opportunities. The site also includes a remote work blog and common work-from-home questions answered by 146 remote companies and virtual teams.

One of the major job search sites for traditional work,  Indeed also has a special section for remote jobs. The site currently lists more than 47,000 remote jobs that are searchable by job type, keywords or company. Indeed also lets users browse companies by industry, search for salaries and upload resumes so that employers can find them.

We Work Remotely

According to the We Work Remotely site, its community has over 4.5 million visitors. The site lists remote jobs in categories including programming, design, customer support, and sales and marketing . It also designates between full-time and contract positions. We Work Remotely also offers a number of resources for remote job seekers including a Remote Leader Playbook, remote work trends and the top 100 remote companies.

ZipRecruiter

While ZipRecruiter is a larger job board that publishes opportunities about traditional jobs as well, it contains a section specifically for remote positions.

Some of the most popular types of remote jobs listed on the site are administrative, part-time and contract work. The site also has contract-to-hire and part-time jobs. Some of the most popular remote job titles found on the site are teacher, graphic designer and bookkeeper.

A free site that's targeted solely toward remote jobs, Jobspresso has over 1,000 openings listed, featuring tech roles in software development, design, user experience, and development and operations, as well as writing, editing and product management.

Jobspresso curates, reviews and adds to its listings daily. According to the Jobspresso website, "100% of our jobs are hand-picked, manually reviewed and expertly curated."

Working Nomads

Working Nomads distinguishes itself from other sites by offering a remote job board that spans positions worldwide. It targets job seekers who want to “work remotely from your home or places around the world.” It offers fully remote positions and partly remote jobs where you might need to spend some time on site for training or team-building purposes.

Listing remote jobs in software development, customer support, marketing, design and other industries, the Remote OK site states that its job board reaches more than 2.6 million remote workers.

Job seekers can search by salary and benefits as well as job title and location. The site also includes an opportunity for remote workers and nomads to sign up to receive global health insurance.

This is a free, standard job board with a category search and a community option to receive newsletters and webinars via email on topics relevant to remote job searchers and workers. It allows you to search for jobs by skill and location or by company.

Though the Remotive site places an emphasis on remote tech opportunities, it posts other types of remote jobs as well. Job hunters can use a “Remotive Accelerator” to unlock over 34,000 additional opportunities.

25 Best Sites for Finding Remote Work Online

There are a ton of reasons to look for remote work online, now more than ever.

Maybe you’re a busy stay-at-home mom who wants to re-enter the workforce but you need flexibility to pick up your kids from school and run errands. Or you have a psychological or physical disability that would better be supported by a job working at home.

Or you’re a digital nomad who wants to travel the world while being able to telecommute from anywhere with an internet connection.

Flexjobs has found that 66% of workers would prefer to remote work full-time after the pandemic is over if given the choice.

If you are generally drawn to the wide range of online remote jobs allowing you to commute from your living room while wearing your pajamas — maybe you already believed a working from home job is the answer .

Even if clocking in from home isn’t your ideal work situation, there are options for you. Either way, remote work doesn’t have to be a dream — the jobs are totally real!

A Note on “Work From Home” Jobs, Telecommuting, and Remote Work

Let’s take a moment to clear up the difference between work-from-home jobs, telecommuting jobs, and remote work.

  • Work-from-home jobs are exactly how they sound — jobs working at home. This term speaks to the assumption that jobs are either done in a traditional office or from your living room, but — for many people — working out of their house is a perfect remote solution.
  • Telecommuting jobs typically allow people to work from their home (or elsewhere) for companies or organizations that are still in their immediate area. A job where someone works in an office three days a week, but spends two days working from home is a classic example of telecommuting.
  • Remote work is a catch-all term that applies to work that can be done from anywhere in the world. Since working from home jobs and telecommuting jobs are subsets of remote work, we prefer to use remote work to describe any job that doesn’t involve being tied to a specific office or workplace. If you’re working from home, that’s remote work; if you’re working from a coworking space, a coffee shop, or the beach, that’s also remote work, too.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics , the number of people doing some or all of their work remotely was on the rise even before 2020, so there’s no time like the present to get in on the unique benefits and advantages an online remote job has to offer .

Not to mention, if you eventually choose to work in person, having an ESL certification allows you to get a work visa in different countries around the world!

Hourly pay : $10 - $40

Whether you’re a skilled guitarist or a math expert, you can turn any skill or knowledge you have into a part-time work-from-home job.

Depending on your niche, you can either tutor students via phone or a video call.

#4. Transcription

Hourly pay : $11 - $29

As a transcriptionist, you’ll be listening to voice recordings and accurately transcribing them into written text.

These work-at-home jobs are particularly in-demand in legal and medical fields, so having industry-related knowledge can help you land the job .

#5. Consulting

Average salary : $78,345

Do you have extensive knowledge of legal, business, marketing, or other matters? If so, consulting might be the ideal work-at-home job for you.

#6. Tax Preparation

Hourly pay : $10 to $25

Tax preparers help companies and individuals correctly file their tax returns.

For this reason, being a tax preparer isn’t exactly a part-time job as you’ll likely only be in business before the tax return submission deadline.

Nonetheless, it makes for a great side hustle.

#7. Voice Acting

Hourly pay : $15 to $104

If you have a flair for the dramatic, voice acting might be a great work-at-home job for you!

You can either try your luck in online voice acting auditions or look for freelance voice acting gigs on websites such as Fiverr - just make sure you have a high-quality microphone.

#8. Proofreading and Editing

Hourly pay : $12 to $31

Proofreaders and editors work on improving various types of content, including emails, articles, documents, and more.

So, if you have a knack for grammar and can make even the most awkward sentences flow, you might be perfectly suited for the role!

#9. Video Editing

Annual pay : $34,000 - $78,000

Essentially, video editors are responsible for turning raw footage into a finished video product.

So, if you know that pans and clean plates appear not only in the kitchen but also in video editing, this might be the right work-from-home job for you!

#10. Animation

Annual pay : $39,000 - $90,000

If you’re gifted at visual storytelling, you may want to consider a part-time work-at-home job as an animator.

Besides working for larger studios, you can work with smaller businesses, such as your favorite YouTube channels—especially if you’re just starting out and want to build your portfolio.

#11. Affiliate Marketing

Average annual pay : $60,341

If you already have a blog, website, or a large social media following, you may want to give affiliate marketing a go to get some additional income.

Essentially, once you sign up for an affiliate marketing program, you’ll be promoting specific products and getting a commission whenever someone clicks your link and makes a purchase.

#12. Social Media Management

Annual pay : $29,000 - $78,000

In short, social media managers help companies develop their online presence by implementing marketing strategies, producing high-quality content, and interacting with the audience.

So, if you're a social media guru that’s capable of quickly and effectively building a social media follower base from zero to thousands, you might be well-suited for a social media manager position.

#13. Translation and Interpretation

Hourly pay : $12 to $38

Although these two work from home jobs seem similar, here’s the difference - translators convert written text from one language to another, while interpreters translate spoken language.

One thing to keep in mind, though, is that both the pay and the job demand largely depend on the languages you speak.

#14. Graphic Design

Annual pay : $31,000 - $66,000

Depending on the industry, graphic designers create memorable logos, informative brochures, eye-catching billboards, and other marketing materials.

So, if you’re skilled at creating inspiring and attractive visuals both manually and digitally, graphic design might be a great work-from-home job for you.

#15. Writing

Annual pay : $29,000 - $100,000

If you have a way with words, you’re in luck - you can easily turn writing into a work-from-home job.

Your pay will largely depend on your writing skills and experience, so make sure to pick a writing niche you feel most comfortable with.

#16. Stock Photography

Average monthly pay per one image : $0.02

From photo studios to the outdoors, photographers typically work in various locations.

However, alongside traditional photoshoots, you can also sell stock images for some extra income, especially if you already have a large portfolio.

#17. Virtual Assistance

Hourly pay: $10 to $26

Essentially, virtual assistants perform administrative tasks, such as scheduling meetings, managing emails, and answering phone calls remotely.

Although most companies don’t require virtual assistants to have a degree, outstanding organizational skills, computer proficiency, and years of work experience are a must if you’re aspiring to become a top-earning virtual assistant.

As a clinical research coordinator, you’ll be responsible for managing clinical trials, gathering research data, and administering questionnaires.

#2. Online Marketplace Sales

Average annual income : $34,388

Selling items online can be a hit or miss depending on the item, pricing, shipping expenses, and many other variables.

That said, if you’re looking for an additional source of income, you might want to give online sales a shot. For example, you can sell any used or new items you don’t need on eBay.

Alternatively, if you make handmade goods or have any vintage items, consider selling them on Etsy.

Annual pay : $20,000 - $37,000

Pay per case : $20 - $60

This one’s for all Judge Judy fans out there - believe it or not, you can get paid for reviewing legal cases online!

If you’re looking for a full-time job, however, you may want to look further - unlike most other work-at-home jobs, this one pays per gig, which typically takes up to an hour.

#5. Renting

Annual pay: varies based on the object, location, etc.

If you have a spare room, a car, or storage space you don’t use, rent it out for some additional income.

Alternatively, you can also rent out any other items that are collecting dust, including fishing gear, musical instruments, and such.

#6. Repair Services

Hourly pay : $14 to $50

Do you have a knack for repairing shoes, clocks, computers, cars, or other objects?

Well, if you’re looking for work-from-home jobs, consider becoming an in-home repairman!

5 Tips to Successfully Work From Home

Although working from home allows for more flexibility, it also comes with its set of challenges.

For example, since there’s no one to keep you accountable (except yourself), you may find it hard to avoid distractions or effectively manage your time.

So, here are 5 tips that will help you successfully work from home:

  • Stick to a schedule. If you find yourself struggling to manage your time and working late at night, try to set and stick to a working schedule. Not to mention, working during set hours helps you maximize your performance and maintain a good work-life balance.
  • Set boundaries. One of the biggest benefits of working from home is that it allows you to spend more time with your family. However, if your family members distract you from work, you may want to express your needs and set clear boundaries.
  • Have a dedicated workplace. No matter how tempting working from bed may seem, it’s important that you have a dedicated office space to maintain a better work-life balance.
  • Take breaks. Even if you’re working from home, make sure to take regular coffee and lunch breaks. This way, you can avoid overworking, which improves your efficiency and overall well-being.
  • Go outside. It’s easy to get isolated and inactive when you’re working from home, so make sure to regularly leave your house and get some fresh air. If working from home becomes too monotonic, you can always try a coworking space or a cafe.

Key Takeaways

And that’s a wrap - now you have a good selection of the best work-from-home jobs to choose from.

What’s more, you also know 5 tips that can help you successfully work from home!

Before you go, here are the key points mentioned in this article:

  • Some of the highest-paying work-from-home jobs include cloud architecture, product management, software engineering, and UX design.
  • If you’re looking for a work-from-home job that requires little or no experience, some of your options include blogging, babysitting, and event planning.
  • You can turn your hobby or interest, such as writing or graphic design, into a part-time job.
  • Baking, renting, and working as a mock online juror are some of the best work-from-home jobs for seniors.
  • If you’re working from home, make sure to set clear boundaries with your family members, stick to a routine, set up a dedicated workplace, regularly go outside, and take breaks.

Upwork, formerly oDesk the world’s largest online workplace for a variety of talents from software application, web design, social media, administrative, graphic design and more.

There are mixed reviews of Upwork.  Some people are very successful here  and have formed lasting relationships and received continuous work after their gig was done. Others not so much.

I have received work here when I started out, so it doesn’t hurt to check it out. And if you get linked up with a really great client it could be well worth it.

Keep in mind there’s a lot of competition on this site and you must submit a proposal. A negative for me is that they take a 20% percentage which is high IMO.

5 websites to get freelance jobs that you probably didn’t know existed.

Upwork and Fiverr can sometimes get oversaturated, so it's always worth exploring opportunities on ... [+] other freelance job marketplaces

If you're looking to start out as a freelancer this year, you've no doubt heard of popular freelance platforms such as Upwork, Fiverr, and People Per Hour. And while these all have their place, the unfortunate reality is that, much of the time, they are over-saturated (especially in some sectors and freelance job categories).

As the freelancing and the side hustle or gig or economy increases in popularity and widespread adoption by professionals globally, almost everyone is setting their sights on these freelancing websites and it becomes much more difficult to obtain work without being overcrowded or not noticed at all due to the competition.

Consequently, you end up being back at square one: endlessly looking for work, and lowering your fees to ridiculously low prices in a desperate bid to have enough income to boost your salary or to live on full-time.

To this end, within this article are compiled five freelancing websites which may not be as wildly popular when you initially think of freelancing, but nonetheless, are effective and gather a niche crowd of customers and clients.

What To Consider Before Joining A Freelance Platform

Since they are so niche, there are a couple things you need to bear in mind:

Netflix: Marvel Dud Among Movies New On Streaming Service This Week

Square enix is done with playstation exclusivity after profit drop, apple s new chatgpt deal here s what it means for iphone security, you need to be niche.

Places such as Upwork can be viewed as more general job boards such as Indeed, while freelance job platforms such as the ones listed below, can be compared to places such as Dice, which is exclusively focused on tech. Therefore, you need to ensure that you have a set goal and purpose as a freelancer. You need to have a very specific set of skills, and stick by them. You should also be able to clearly articulate what value you bring to a specific industry or niche.

Entry Requirements

While on the topic of exclusivity, it's very useful to bear in mind that these freelance websites are not mere job boards. They exist as a freelance marketplace, providing high value to their clients who search for freelance talent on their platforms, and they also exist to ensure you as a freelancer are protected and abide by their ethics.

Therefore, you may find it more difficult to get in the door with these freelance communities more than any other platform that accepts your profile within a few short hours after you sign up.

For this reason, it's essential to know how to sell yourself, and most of all, to be patient, persistent, and follow all their guidance and instructions for what they're looking for in freelancers.

It's essential to have a portfolio and clearly articulate your value to be considered for niche ... [+] freelance platforms

5 Websites To Get Freelance Jobs

Here are a few of the niche, or "elite," freelance job platforms that you may or may not have heard of. They raise the bar for freelance talent and as such, it would be very useful at this stage to have a portfolio before applying or setting up your profile with them. You need to be extremely confident in your skills and abilities. Otherwise, you may be sorely disappointed.

1. Catalant Technologies

This freelance platform is dedicated to freelancers looking for consulting projects. Their consulting project categories include corporate strategy, supply chain, HR, sales and marketing, and digital transformation.

2. Gigged AI

Gigged AI is a UK-based skills-focused freelance talent platform that connects you with freelance work according to your skills. These skills can range from project management, to stakeholder management, to business analysis, and social media management.

3. Contra.com

Contra is a commission-free freelance platform that helps you find a variety of freelance jobs suited to your profile, and enables you to create invoices and manage your workflow.

To be a freelancer on Gun.io, you need to be a developer and you need to pass comprehensive vetting. They make it clear that they are looking for world-class, "exceptional developers." After screening and profile creation, you would have an intro call with the Gun.io team and then be introduced to their clients to get the ball rolling.

5. DesignHill

DesignHill is a creative marketplace for graphic designs, from logo creation, to stationery, brochures, and packaging. As a designer, you would be competing for your design to be selected in a design project competition, and if your design is selected, the client will request to work with you further on edits.

Elite freelance platforms will usually have strict vetting requirements for new freelancers

So when it comes to freelance websites, if you think you've seen them all, chances are you're missing out on a ton of freelance job opportunities. With a little digging, you can find a wide array of freelance opportunities and projects to work on.

Michigan woman set to celebrate her first Mother's Day at home since emerging from 5-year coma

By Steve Hartman

May 10, 2024 / 9:02 PM EDT / CBS News

Dowagiac, Michigan — For Peggy Means, every Mother's Day had been just another day without her daughter, Jennifer Flewellen, who was critically injured in a 2017 car crash at the age 35.

Flewellen, Means' only daughter, was in a coma with virtually no chance of ever coming out of it, doctors told her. And yet, Means refused to let them pull the plug, a decision she said she "never" questioned.

"I just couldn't let her go," Means told CBS News.

One by one, Means' friends stopped visiting. Even her husband moved on with his life. Yet, almost every day, Means was there to comfort and care for Flewellen. Means always talked to her, as if Flewellen could understand, which of course, she couldn't.

Until one day, in August 2022, she could.

It started with a laugh. Jennifer had been off life-support, but still in a coma, when her mother said something funny, and that was it. About a year later, Flewellen came home.

Although she still cannot walk and struggles to speak, her mind is sharp, and her heart is filled with joy.

Jennifer especially loves visiting with her sons.

As for Peggy, the mother who made these moments possible, this Mother's Day may be her best one ever, because even though she won't be getting flowers or candy, Jennifer can now muster those words that matter most, and deliver them as sincerely as they have ever been spoken.

"I love my mom," Jennifer said.

Beyond Google: 5 Chrome extensions that give you search superpowers

jack-wallen

Most people believe Google is enough -- type your search string into the address bar, hit enter, and comb through the results.

What if I told you that there were better ways to search using Google Chrome? With the help of a few simple extensions, you can extend and simplify the search process right from your browser.

Also: 5 ways to declutter your Chrome browser - and take back control of your tab life

For those who've never installed an extension in Chrome, it's simple:

  • Go to the extensions page in the Chrome Web Store.
  • Click Install.
  • When prompted, click Add Extension.

Before I continue, a word of warning: While searching for these extensions, I found several add-ons in the Chrome Web Store that were not verified by Google. Because some extensions require access to your Google account to function, I won't recommend any option that has not been verified. You do not want your account information compromised! Therefore, even if an extension looks like it's exactly what you're looking for, if it's not verified, featured, or doesn't have a decent amount of positive reviews, avoid it.

Similarly, if you filter extensions by either "Featured extensions" or "Established publishers," you can trust that any extension listed is Verified.

With that in mind, here are a few extensions I've found and used that can enhance your search experience.

1. Search YouTube

Sure, you can add YouTube as a site search in Chrome's settings, but a handy extension called Search YouTube  makes this a bit easier. Once installed, the Search YouTube extension adds a right-click menu entry so all you have to do is highlight a string of text on a webpage, right-click your mouse (or double-finger-tap your trackpad), and select Search YouTube for "X" (where X is your search string).

Also: How to download YouTube videos for free, plus two other methods

You can also pin the YouTube icon to your toolbar extension section. Click that icon to go directly to YouTube. This featured extension doesn't offer much more than that, but if you search YouTube often, it comes in handy.

You can install this free extension from the Chrome Web Store.

Searching on YouTube is simple with this extension.

2. Simple = Select + Search

The Simple = Select + Search extension is incredibly handy. Once you've installed it, you can select a text string on a webpage, right-click your mouse, click "Search X on…" (where X is the search string), and select which search engine you want to use. You can even choose "Search Everywhere" and the extension will open a tab for each search engine you've configured.

Configuring search engines in the extension is as simple as combing through the Featured Search Engines section and clicking the options you want to add. Once added, they'll appear in the right-click menu for quick and easy searching.

This extension makes searching simple.

3. Search All Tabs

If you frequently work with several tabs open and wish you had the means to easily search each one, Search All Tabs is what you're looking for. This extension adds powerful context searching that quickly finds the tab you're looking for, based on your search criteria.

Also: Google names its 11 favorite Chrome extensions. Which have you tried?

You can search via hostname, title, mime, URL, filename, language, keyword, and description. I've found the keyword search very handy. For example, I can have 20 or so tabs open, click the Search All Tabs button, type my name, and every relevant tab will be listed. This extension can also copy all URLs to your PC clipboard, group all matched tabs in a new window, search within PDF tabs, and more. If you consistently work with a lot of open tabs, this extension is a must.

If you're a tab power user, you'll want this extension.

4. DuckDuckGo

DuckDuckGo is a must if you're looking to improve your privacy. Not only does this extension give you quick access to the DuckDuckGo search engine, but it also adds protections such as encryption, tracking request blocking, and third-party request monitoring.

Also: DuckDuckGo's encrypted syncing brings private browsing to all your devices

Although this isn't specifically a search engine extension, I included it here because it enables you to access the DuckDuckGo private search engine without using the Chrome address bar. You can leave your default search engine as is and still use DuckDuckGo, without first having to navigate to DuckDuckGo.com and then running your search. Besides, the additional security features certainly don't hurt.

DuckDuckGo is a must-have extension for Chrome users concerned about privacy.

5. Search by Image

If you regularly see an image online and want to search for either its location or relevant information, you'll want to try  Search By Image . With this extension installed, right-click the image, click Search By Image, and select the search engine you want to use.

Also: The best AI image generators to try right now

You can also select to search with all search engines or open the image in a new tab. From the options page for the extension, you can customize which search engines to include, what you would like to see in the context menu, theme the menu, and enable/disable a few other options (such as open new tabs in the background and use deep search when selecting images).

If you frequently search for image location or relevant information, this extension will come in handy.

Any one of these extensions will help make your Chrome searching easier and more powerful. If Chrome is your default web browser, I would highly recommend giving one or more of these a try.
