While Sandel argues that pursuing perfection through genetic engineering would decrease our sense of humility, he claims that the sense of solidarity we would lose is also important.

This thesis summarizes several points in Sandel’s argument, but it does not make a claim about how we should understand his argument. A reader who read Sandel’s argument would not also need to read an essay based on this descriptive thesis.  

Broad thesis (arguable, but difficult to support with evidence) 

Michael Sandel’s arguments about genetic engineering do not take into consideration all the relevant issues.

This is an arguable claim because it would be possible to argue against it by saying that Michael Sandel’s arguments do take all of the relevant issues into consideration. But the claim is too broad. Because the thesis does not specify which “issues” it is focused on—or why it matters if they are considered—readers won’t know what the rest of the essay will argue, and the writer won’t know what to focus on. If there is a particular issue that Sandel does not address, then a more specific version of the thesis would include that issue—hand an explanation of why it is important.  

Arguable thesis with analytical claim 

While Sandel argues persuasively that our instinct to “remake” (54) ourselves into something ever more perfect is a problem, his belief that we can always draw a line between what is medically necessary and what makes us simply “better than well” (51) is less convincing.

This is an arguable analytical claim. To argue for this claim, the essay writer will need to show how evidence from the article itself points to this interpretation. It’s also a reasonable scope for a thesis because it can be supported with evidence available in the text and is neither too broad nor too narrow.  

Arguable thesis with normative claim 

Given Sandel’s argument against genetic enhancement, we should not allow parents to decide on using Human Growth Hormone for their children.

This thesis tells us what we should do about a particular issue discussed in Sandel’s article, but it does not tell us how we should understand Sandel’s argument.  

Questions to ask about your thesis 

  • Is the thesis truly arguable? Does it speak to a genuine dilemma in the source, or would most readers automatically agree with it?  
  • Is the thesis too obvious? Again, would most or all readers agree with it without needing to see your argument?  
  • Is the thesis complex enough to require a whole essay's worth of argument?  
  • Is the thesis supportable with evidence from the text rather than with generalizations or outside research?  
  • Would anyone want to read a paper in which this thesis was developed? That is, can you explain what this paper is adding to our understanding of a problem, question, or topic?

What this handout is about.

This handout describes what a thesis statement is, how thesis statements work in your writing, and how you can craft or refine one for your draft.

Introduction

Writing in college often takes the form of persuasion—convincing others that you have an interesting, logical point of view on the subject you are studying. Persuasion is a skill you practice regularly in your daily life. You persuade your roommate to clean up, your parents to let you borrow the car, your friend to vote for your favorite candidate or policy. In college, course assignments often ask you to make a persuasive case in writing. You are asked to convince your reader of your point of view. This form of persuasion, often called academic argument, follows a predictable pattern in writing. After a brief introduction of your topic, you state your point of view on the topic directly and often in one sentence. This sentence is the thesis statement, and it serves as a summary of the argument you’ll make in the rest of your paper.

What is a thesis statement?

A thesis statement:

  • tells the reader how you will interpret the significance of the subject matter under discussion.
  • is a road map for the paper; in other words, it tells the reader what to expect from the rest of the paper.
  • directly answers the question asked of you. A thesis is an interpretation of a question or subject, not the subject itself. The subject, or topic, of an essay might be World War II or Moby Dick; a thesis must then offer a way to understand the war or the novel.
  • makes a claim that others might dispute.
  • is usually a single sentence near the beginning of your paper (most often, at the end of the first paragraph) that presents your argument to the reader. The rest of the paper, the body of the essay, gathers and organizes evidence that will persuade the reader of the logic of your interpretation.

If your assignment asks you to take a position or develop a claim about a subject, you may need to convey that position or claim in a thesis statement near the beginning of your draft. The assignment may not explicitly state that you need a thesis statement because your instructor may assume you will include one. When in doubt, ask your instructor if the assignment requires a thesis statement. When an assignment asks you to analyze, to interpret, to compare and contrast, to demonstrate cause and effect, or to take a stand on an issue, it is likely that you are being asked to develop a thesis and to support it persuasively. How do I create a thesis?

A thesis is the result of a lengthy thinking process. Formulating a thesis is not the first thing you do after reading an essay assignment. Before you develop an argument on any topic, you have to collect and organize evidence, look for possible relationships between known facts (such as surprising contrasts or similarities), and think about the significance of these relationships. Once you do this thinking, you will probably have a “working thesis” that presents a basic or main idea and an argument that you think you can support with evidence. Both the argument and your thesis are likely to need adjustment along the way.

Writers use all kinds of techniques to stimulate their thinking and to help them clarify relationships or comprehend the broader significance of a topic and arrive at a thesis statement. For more ideas on how to get started, see our handout on brainstorming .

How do I know if my thesis is strong?

If there’s time, run it by your instructor or make an appointment at the Writing Center to get some feedback. Even if you do not have time to get advice elsewhere, you can do some thesis evaluation of your own. When reviewing your first draft and its working thesis, ask yourself the following :

  • Do I answer the question? Re-reading the question prompt after constructing a working thesis can help you fix an argument that misses the focus of the question. If the prompt isn’t phrased as a question, try to rephrase it. For example, “Discuss the effect of X on Y” can be rephrased as “What is the effect of X on Y?”
  • Have I taken a position that others might challenge or oppose? If your thesis simply states facts that no one would, or even could, disagree with, it’s possible that you are simply providing a summary, rather than making an argument.
  • Is my thesis statement specific enough? Thesis statements that are too vague often do not have a strong argument. If your thesis contains words like “good” or “successful,” see if you could be more specific: why is something “good”; what specifically makes something “successful”?
  • Does my thesis pass the “So what?” test? If a reader’s first response is likely to  be “So what?” then you need to clarify, to forge a relationship, or to connect to a larger issue.
  • Does my essay support my thesis specifically and without wandering? If your thesis and the body of your essay do not seem to go together, one of them has to change. It’s okay to change your working thesis to reflect things you have figured out in the course of writing your paper. Remember, always reassess and revise your writing as necessary.
  • Does my thesis pass the “how and why?” test? If a reader’s first response is “how?” or “why?” your thesis may be too open-ended and lack guidance for the reader. See what you can add to give the reader a better take on your position right from the beginning.

Suppose you are taking a course on contemporary communication, and the instructor hands out the following essay assignment: “Discuss the impact of social media on public awareness.” Looking back at your notes, you might start with this working thesis:

Social media impacts public awareness in both positive and negative ways.

You can use the questions above to help you revise this general statement into a stronger thesis.

  • Do I answer the question? You can analyze this if you rephrase “discuss the impact” as “what is the impact?” This way, you can see that you’ve answered the question only very generally with the vague “positive and negative ways.”
  • Have I taken a position that others might challenge or oppose? Not likely. Only people who maintain that social media has a solely positive or solely negative impact could disagree.
  • Is my thesis statement specific enough? No. What are the positive effects? What are the negative effects?
  • Does my thesis pass the “how and why?” test? No. Why are they positive? How are they positive? What are their causes? Why are they negative? How are they negative? What are their causes?
  • Does my thesis pass the “So what?” test? No. Why should anyone care about the positive and/or negative impact of social media?

After thinking about your answers to these questions, you decide to focus on the one impact you feel strongly about and have strong evidence for:

Because not every voice on social media is reliable, people have become much more critical consumers of information, and thus, more informed voters.

This version is a much stronger thesis! It answers the question, takes a specific position that others can challenge, and it gives a sense of why it matters.

Let’s try another. Suppose your literature professor hands out the following assignment in a class on the American novel: Write an analysis of some aspect of Mark Twain’s novel Huckleberry Finn. “This will be easy,” you think. “I loved Huckleberry Finn!” You grab a pad of paper and write:

Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn is a great American novel.

You begin to analyze your thesis:

  • Do I answer the question? No. The prompt asks you to analyze some aspect of the novel. Your working thesis is a statement of general appreciation for the entire novel.

Think about aspects of the novel that are important to its structure or meaning—for example, the role of storytelling, the contrasting scenes between the shore and the river, or the relationships between adults and children. Now you write:

In Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain develops a contrast between life on the river and life on the shore.
  • Do I answer the question? Yes!
  • Have I taken a position that others might challenge or oppose? Not really. This contrast is well-known and accepted.
  • Is my thesis statement specific enough? It’s getting there–you have highlighted an important aspect of the novel for investigation. However, it’s still not clear what your analysis will reveal.
  • Does my thesis pass the “how and why?” test? Not yet. Compare scenes from the book and see what you discover. Free write, make lists, jot down Huck’s actions and reactions and anything else that seems interesting.
  • Does my thesis pass the “So what?” test? What’s the point of this contrast? What does it signify?”

After examining the evidence and considering your own insights, you write:

Through its contrasting river and shore scenes, Twain’s Huckleberry Finn suggests that to find the true expression of American democratic ideals, one must leave “civilized” society and go back to nature.

This final thesis statement presents an interpretation of a literary work based on an analysis of its content. Of course, for the essay itself to be successful, you must now present evidence from the novel that will convince the reader of your interpretation.

This chapter analyses constructivism and the use of constructivist learning theory in schools, in order to create effective learning environments for all students. It discusses various conceptual approaches to constructivist pedagogy. The key idea of constructivism is that meaningful knowledge and critical thinking are actively constructed, in a cognitive, cultural, emotional, and social sense, and that individual learning is an active process, involving engagement and participation in the classroom. This idea is most relevant to the process of creating effective learning environments in schools globally. It is argued that the effectiveness of constructivist learning and teaching is dependent on students’ characteristics, cognitive, social and emotional development, individual differences, cultural diversity, motivational atmosphere and teachers’ classroom strategies, school’s location, and the quality of teachers. The chapter offers some insights as to why and how constructivist learning theory and constructivist pedagogy could be useful in supporting other popular and effective approaches to improve learning, performance, standards and teaching. Suggestions are made on how to apply constructivist learning theory and how to develop constructivist pedagogy, with a range of effective strategies for enhancing meaningful learning and critical thinking in the classroom, and improving academic standards.

The Strangers: Chapter 1's Big Twist Follows A Fallen Horror Franchise Down A Dark Path

The Strangers: Chapter 1 is a brutal game of cat-and-mouse, with the film's ending underscoring the haunting themes of the series as a whole. Serving as a three-part reimagining of 2008's The Strangers , the first entry in the new trilogy focuses on the long-term romantic couple Maya and Ryan. While trying to move to Portland, the pair end up briefly stranded in a small town and elect to rent an AirBnB. However, this also places them in the path of three killers, with The Strangers: Chapter 1 's story following the killers stalking them.

While the trilogy has been teased as a potential explanation of The Strangers killers and their motivations, The Strangers: Chapter 1 is largely a tense thriller focused on setting the tone for the films. This builds to the film's unceremoniously brutal ending. The ending of the film confirms the movie's thematic connection to the original, all while setting up one of the survivors to carry the series going forward.

The Strangers: Chapter 1's trailer implies that the reboot will utilize a horror trope that badly derailed an earlier '00s horror re-imagining.

Maya's Fate In The Strangers: Chapter 1 Ending

Maya is played by riverdale 's madelaine petsch.

The Strangers: Chapter 1 has some particularly brutal turns, but it also sets up Maya as the protagonist of the for the rest of the new The Strangers trilogy . Maya is one of the two primary characters of The Strangers: Chapter 1 , an architect in the middle of a cross-country trip alongside her longtime boyfriend Ryan. As with other protagonists in The Strangers franchise, Maya has the bad luck of encountering the three masked killers and, despite her best efforts, isn't able to escape them by the end of the film.

However, despite being beaten, stabbed, and left for dead, the final moments of The Strangers: Chapter 1 reveal Maya survived her ordeal. Although she's been severely injured, the post-credits sequence for the film features Maya waking up in her hospital room . This means Maya will likely be the protagonist of the upcoming The Strangers: Chapter 2 and potentially The Strangers: Chapter 3 . Director Renny Harlin told Entertainment Weekly that the films will explore what happens to survivors of violent trauma, implying Maya will continue to be central focus for all three films.

Is Ryan Dead After The Strangers: Chapter 1's Ending?

Ryan is played by teen wolf 's froy gutierrez.

Although Maya survives the events of The Strangers: Chapter 1 , things are less clear for her boyfriend Ryan. Initially more suspicious of the small town of Venus than Maya, Ryan is ultimately stabbed and left for dead alongside his girlfriend. While his fate is left somewhat ambiguous, his prospects for survival seem dimmer than they were for Maya. He's stabbed before Maya and seems to lose consciousness far quicker than his girlfriend. Coupled with his asthma, it's possible that Ryan did not survive the events of The Strangers: Chapter 1 .

Given Ryan's actions in the film, this adds another tragic layer to Maya's survival. Ryan was initially suspicious of the entire small town of Venus, and his concerns about the area ended up proving true. His accidental murder of a local repairman could complicate any attempts made by police to fully investigate the aftermath of the attack. While his return could explore the guilt he felt over his actions, it's unclear if Gutierrez will return for The Strangers: Chapter 2 — making his potential death all the more possible.

The new film in the psychological horror series is the first of three new The Strangers films coming out in 2024, with the first one coming in May.

Why The Killers Target Maya In The Strangers

How the killers' motivation in chapter 1 is consistent with the strangers ' scariest element.

The three killers in The Strangers: Chapter 1 are implied to be the same masked murderers who appeared in The Strangers and The Strangers: Prey at Night . Similarly to their other appearances, the three don't seem to have any specific reason to kill beyond the joy they derive from the act of murder. Before Maya is stabbed and left to die, she tearfully asks them why they came after her and Ryan. One of the killers approaches her and simply says that they were there, implying this was just a case of bad luck for Ryan and Maya.

This lack of any specific drive or meaning behind the murders is one of the scariest elements of The Strangers as a concept. In The Strangers , the reason given for attacking Kristin and James was that "they were home." Given the ending of The Strangers: Chapter 1 , this suggests the violent actions taken in the films are simply the result of violent impulses and opportunity . While this keeps there from being any specific drive or overarching scheme, it adds a layer of terrifying randomness to the events. In theory, anyone could find themselves the next target of the Killers.

How The Strangers' Ending & Post-Credits Set Up Chapter 2

The post-credits scene confirms maya's survival, and reveals she's still in danger.

The Strangers: Chapter 1 ends on a largely bleak note, with the killers seemingly able to escape consequences for their actions. Although Maya was able to call the police, the cops arrive too late to catch the killers. This means their violent acts will continue, setting up the next films as well as The Strangers and The Strangers: Prey at Night . The post-credits scene for The Strangers: Chapter 1 at least confirms that Maya survived the events of the film, although it's unclear if Ryan did or not. However, Maya is still in danger .

The final shot of the post-credits sequence reveals that the Masked Man is also in the hospital room, watching her . If the Masked Man is truly there, it suggests that the killers are able to easily sneak through typically populated buildings like hospitals with relative ease. This could also imply they have some level of clearance or authority in their true lives. There's also a possibility that the presence of the Masked Man is more of an visual indicator that the trauma of the attack lingers with Maya, designating her as the lead of the series going forward.

The Real Meaning Of The Strangers: Chapter 1's Ending

The Strangers: Chapter 1 is largely focused on being a tense horror film, with little hint of any kind of overarching conspiracy or threat. Instead, the film leans into the random nature of violence, a theme that was at the heart of the previous The Strangers films. This is established in the opening moments of The Strangers: Chapter 1 , which notes that there are millions of violent acts committed across the United States every year. While some violent actions are taken for a specific cause, sometimes horrible things happen to people for no reason .

The Strangers embodies that fear of the unknown and the random . The masked killers are never revealed, and there's no clear clue if any of the locals from Venus are aware of their identities or involved in their actions. While later films in The Strangers may reveal motives, identities or origins of the killers , The Strangers: Chapter 1 leans into the horrifying implications of being alone and targeted for no reason more than being in the wrong place at the wrong time. It's a fundamental fear, and one that The Strangers: Chapter 1 indulges to a horrifying degree.

The Strangers: Chapter 1 is the third film in the horror/slasher franchise directed by Renny Harlin. The film follows a young couple who move to the Pacific Northwest to start a new life. However, their new life gets off to a terrifying start when a broken-down vehicle forces them to stay at a remote vacation home, leaving them to be stalked relentlessly by three masked murderers.

The Strangers: Chapter 1 Is A Modest Box Office Hit - What Does That Mean For The Trilogy?

N ot to sound like a broken record but it was yet another brutal weekend at the box office as May rolls right along. Director John Krasinski's big-budget, family-friendly flick "IF" topped the charts with a worse-than-expected opening . Theaters are desperate for a breakout hit given the relatively lackluster performances of other films like "The Fall Guy" in the early going. But, as has been the case so many times in the pandemic era, horror came to the rescue — sort of. Lionsgate's "The Strangers: Chapter 1" had a solid debut, but not so much that it can make up for what was lacking elsewhere. It was also an iffy start for a film that is launching an entire trilogy.

Director Renny Harlin's new take on "The Strangers" (the first part of it anyway) opened to an estimated $12 million domestically, placing at number three on the charts behind "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" ($26 million), and "IF" ($35 million). Harlin's horror flick did so on less than 2,900 screens, whereas "IF" and "Apes" were both playing on more than 4,000 screens. That's the power of horror when it works. It's a genre with a built-in audience to tap into. Unfortunately, the good news stops there for this one as all of the other metrics we have indicate that this movie, and its two already-filmed sequels, may be facing an uphill battle from here on out.

Here's the problem: "The Strangers: Chapter 1" has a lousy C CinemaScore, which means audiences were pretty soft on it. That's not always an issue but critics have been wildly unkind as well, as it boasts a mere 13% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. /Film's BJ Colangelo called it "frustrating" and a "paint-by-numbers slasher" in her review . That's a big issue when Lionsgate is banking on audiences returning for "Chapter 2" and "Chapter 3," which are already in the can and awaiting release in the coming months.

Lionsgate Needs The Strangers Crowd To Show Up Again

The film is a remake of Bryan Bertino's 2008 home invasion classic "The Strangers" — not a prequel . It picks up after a couple's car breaks down in an eerie small town and they are forced to spend the night in a remote cabin. They end up being terrorized by three masked strangers who strike with seemingly no motive. Madelaine Petsch ("Riverdale") and Froy Gutierrez ("Cruel Summer") lead the cast.

For Lionsgate, the good news is that Harlin filmed all three films at once and the first chapter comes with a reported budget of $8.5 million. Presumably, we're going to triple that figure for the cost of the trilogy, putting the entire enterprise in the $25 million range before marketing. The catch there is that the studio has to market three movies in the span of less than a year. That's not cheap. The hope from the beginning was to hook hardcore horror fans with "Chapter 1" and get them on board for the other two, with the audience potentially growing for each installments as more viewers caught up with each entry at home as well.

Unfortunately, the poor reviews and audience reception aren't helping here. Not to get into spoilers but, as the title implies it would, "Chapter 1" ends on a cliffhanger . Is that going to be enough to get moviegoers back in a few months to see where this all goes? Or are viewers largely going to be turned off by this first installment? That's the big, lingering question now.

For Lionsgate, it's a rough start to what was an interesting gamble. For movie theaters, it's yet another blow in a year full of big blows so far. Based on this first movie's start, it's probably going to drop like a rock in weekend two, and the planned follow-ups now have almost no chance of becoming big hits. All involved are going to have to settle for modest hit status at best.

So, you’ve collected and analysed your qualitative data, and it’s time to write up your results chapter. But where do you start? In this post, we’ll guide you through the qualitative results chapter (also called the findings chapter), step by step.

What exactly is the results chapter?

The results chapter in a dissertation or thesis (or any formal academic research piece) is where you objectively and neutrally present the findings of your qualitative analysis (or analyses if you used multiple qualitative analysis methods ). This chapter can sometimes be combined with the discussion chapter (where you interpret the data and discuss its meaning), depending on your university’s preference.  We’ll treat the two chapters as separate, as that’s the most common approach.

In contrast to a quantitative results chapter that presents numbers and statistics, a qualitative results chapter presents data primarily in the form of words . But this doesn’t mean that a qualitative study can’t have quantitative elements – you could, for example, present the number of times a theme or topic pops up in your data, depending on the analysis method(s) you adopt.

Adding a quantitative element to your study can add some rigour, which strengthens your results by providing more evidence for your claims. This is particularly common when using qualitative content analysis. Keep in mind though that qualitative research aims to achieve depth, richness and identify nuances , so don’t get tunnel vision by focusing on the numbers. They’re just cream on top in a qualitative analysis.

So, to recap, the results chapter is where you objectively present the findings of your analysis, without interpreting them (you’ll save that for the discussion chapter). With that out the way, let’s take a look at what you should include in your results chapter.

What should you include in the results chapter?

As we’ve mentioned, your qualitative results chapter should purely present and describe your results , not interpret them in relation to the existing literature or your research questions . Any speculations or discussion about the implications of your findings should be reserved for your discussion chapter.

In your results chapter, you’ll want to talk about your analysis findings and whether or not they support your hypotheses (if you have any). Naturally, the exact contents of your results chapter will depend on which qualitative analysis method (or methods) you use. For example, if you were to use thematic analysis, you’d detail the themes identified in your analysis, using extracts from the transcripts or text to support your claims.

While you do need to present your analysis findings in some detail, you should avoid dumping large amounts of raw data in this chapter. Instead, focus on presenting the key findings and using a handful of select quotes or text extracts to support each finding . The reams of data and analysis can be relegated to your appendices.

While it’s tempting to include every last detail you found in your qualitative analysis, it is important to make sure that you report only that which is relevant to your research aims, objectives and research questions .  Always keep these three components, as well as your hypotheses (if you have any) front of mind when writing the chapter and use them as a filter to decide what’s relevant and what’s not.

How do I write the results chapter?

Now that we’ve covered the basics, it’s time to look at how to structure your chapter. Broadly speaking, the results chapter needs to contain three core components – the introduction, the body and the concluding summary. Let’s take a look at each of these.

Section 1: Introduction

The first step is to craft a brief introduction to the chapter. This intro is vital as it provides some context for your findings. In your introduction, you should begin by reiterating your problem statement and research questions and highlight the purpose of your research . Make sure that you spell this out for the reader so that the rest of your chapter is well contextualised.

The next step is to briefly outline the structure of your results chapter. In other words, explain what’s included in the chapter and what the reader can expect. In the results chapter, you want to tell a story that is coherent, flows logically, and is easy to follow , so make sure that you plan your structure out well and convey that structure (at a high level), so that your reader is well oriented.

The introduction section shouldn’t be lengthy. Two or three short paragraphs should be more than adequate. It is merely an introduction and overview, not a summary of the chapter.

Pro Tip – To help you structure your chapter, it can be useful to set up an initial draft with (sub)section headings so that you’re able to easily (re)arrange parts of your chapter. This will also help your reader to follow your results and give your chapter some coherence.  Be sure to use level-based heading styles (e.g. Heading 1, 2, 3 styles) to help the reader differentiate between levels visually. You can find these options in Word (example below).

Section 2: Body

Before we get started on what to include in the body of your chapter, it’s vital to remember that a results section should be completely objective and descriptive, not interpretive . So, be careful not to use words such as, “suggests” or “implies”, as these usually accompany some form of interpretation – that’s reserved for your discussion chapter.

The structure of your body section is very important , so make sure that you plan it out well. When planning out your qualitative results chapter, create sections and subsections so that you can maintain the flow of the story you’re trying to tell. Be sure to systematically and consistently describe each portion of results. Try to adopt a standardised structure for each portion so that you achieve a high level of consistency throughout the chapter.

For qualitative studies, results chapters tend to be structured according to themes , which makes it easier for readers to follow. However, keep in mind that not all results chapters have to be structured in this manner. For example, if you’re conducting a longitudinal study, you may want to structure your chapter chronologically. Similarly, you might structure this chapter based on your theoretical framework . The exact structure of your chapter will depend on the nature of your study , especially your research questions.

As you work through the body of your chapter, make sure that you use quotes to substantiate every one of your claims . You can present these quotes in italics to differentiate them from your own words. A general rule of thumb is to use at least two pieces of evidence per claim, and these should be linked directly to your data. Also, remember that you need to include all relevant results , not just the ones that support your assumptions or initial leanings.

In addition to including quotes, you can also link your claims to the data by using appendices , which you should reference throughout your text. When you reference, make sure that you include both the name/number of the appendix , as well as the line(s) from which you drew your data.

As referencing styles can vary greatly, be sure to look up the appendix referencing conventions of your university’s prescribed style (e.g. APA , Harvard, etc) and keep this consistent throughout your chapter.

Section 3: Concluding summary

The concluding summary is very important because it summarises your key findings and lays the foundation for the discussion chapter . Keep in mind that some readers may skip directly to this section (from the introduction section), so make sure that it can be read and understood well in isolation.

In this section, you need to remind the reader of the key findings. That is, the results that directly relate to your research questions and that you will build upon in your discussion chapter. Remember, your reader has digested a lot of information in this chapter, so you need to use this section to remind them of the most important takeaways.

Importantly, the concluding summary should not present any new information and should only describe what you’ve already presented in your chapter. Keep it concise – you’re not summarising the whole chapter, just the essentials.

Tips for writing an A-grade results chapter

Now that you’ve got a clear picture of what the qualitative results chapter is all about, here are some quick tips and reminders to help you craft a high-quality chapter:

  • Your results chapter should be written in the past tense . You’ve done the work already, so you want to tell the reader what you found , not what you are currently finding .
  • Make sure that you review your work multiple times and check that every claim is adequately backed up by evidence . Aim for at least two examples per claim, and make use of an appendix to reference these.
  • When writing up your results, make sure that you stick to only what is relevant . Don’t waste time on data that are not relevant to your research objectives and research questions.
  • Use headings and subheadings to create an intuitive, easy to follow piece of writing. Make use of Microsoft Word’s “heading styles” and be sure to use them consistently.
  • When referring to numerical data, tables and figures can provide a useful visual aid. When using these, make sure that they can be read and understood independent of your body text (i.e. that they can stand-alone). To this end, use clear, concise labels for each of your tables or figures and make use of colours to code indicate differences or hierarchy.
  • Similarly, when you’re writing up your chapter, it can be useful to highlight topics and themes in different colours . This can help you to differentiate between your data if you get a bit overwhelmed and will also help you to ensure that your results flow logically and coherently.

I think that instead of saying, ‘The data suggested, or The data implied,’ you can say, ‘The Data showed or revealed, or illustrated or outlined’…If interview data, you may say Jane Doe illuminated or elaborated, or Jane Doe described… or Jane Doe expressed or stated.

What Red Lobster's Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Means For Its Remaining Locations

Last week, Red Lobster suddenly closed at least 48 locations nationwide . Now, according to a press release  issued on May 19, 2024, the longstanding casual seafood restaurant chain has officially filed for voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy. After 2023's backfire of the iconic Ultimate Endless Shrimp promotion  (which was a huge hit with customers, but "ultimately" cost the company more than it profited), Red Lobster lost a whopping $22 million in 2023 alone . 

Back in January, Thiraphong Chansiri, CEO of the chain's parent company, Thai Union Group, explained in a press release that "the combination of [the] COVID-19 pandemic, sustained industry headwinds, higher interest rates, and rising material and labor costs" resulted in devastating "prolonged negative financial contributions" for Thai Union, causing the company to pull out of its financial arrangement with Red Lobster. As the chain steadily accrued more and more unpaid debt , dozens of locations finally closed their doors.

Still, even with the recent mass closure, Red Lobster continues to be the largest seafood restaurant company in the world with roughly 650 remaining locations – all of which will remain open and operating as usual during the Chapter 11 process. As it moves forward toward rebuilding, Red Lobster will also be working with some influx of funds from the $100 million debtor-in-possession ("DIP") financing from its existing lenders, as well as extra money from auctioning off the kitchen equipment from its nearly 50 shuttered restaurant locations.

Chapter 11 bankruptcy relief is essentially a court-supervised reorganization, which allows businesses to restructure their finances, repay creditors, and generally get back on track while remaining in operation. Red Lobster CEO Jonathan Tibus remains optimistic about the company's future. "This restructuring is the best path forward for Red Lobster," Tibus shared in the press release. "The support we've received from our lenders and vendors will help ensure that we can complete the sale process quickly and efficiently while remaining focused on our employees and guests."

Chapter 11 bankruptcy may protect Red Lobster on the corporate end of the business — but, ironically, in its closures, the seafood chain famous for its affordability has saddled many of its former employees with income circumstances they cannot afford. In the most recent post on the chain's Instagram account (which reads "Live, laugh, lobster on Mother's Day"), many people took to the comments section with backlash. 

As one of the top comments notes, "Love how you made thousands of employees work the busiest day of the year without telling them it would be their last." Other comments from apparent former employees similarly express outrage and question the legality of their Red Lobster location closing "suddenly and without warning and without paying severance despite having a clear plan to close," as one commenter puts it. Not even Red Lobster's beloved and fascinating Cheddar Bay Biscuits could put a good taste back in some peoples' mouths after this unsavory move.
