7 Things To Do When Facing The Storms Of Life

Have you ever been in a serious thunderstorm. . .or maybe even a hurricane or tornado?

I’ve never been in a tornado but I have been through a couple of hurricanes and many serious thunderstorms.

During our time in Texas. . .it was not unusual to have thunderstorms with 60-70 mile an hour winds and frequent lightning strikes.  I remember one storm where there were over 1,000 lighting strikes in an hour.

When serious storms come up. . .we’re looking for a safe place.  

How would you react if you were in the middle of the sea when a violent storm arose?

Mark 4:37 in the Classic Amplified Bible says:

“And a furious storm of wind [of hurricane proportions] arose, and the waves kept beating into the boat, so that it was already becoming filled.”

The disciples and Jesus were crossing the Sea of Galilee when a violent storm began to rage.  The disciples were frightened, fearful and faithless in the midst of what they perceived to be a potentially, deadly situation.

Here are seven things we should do when facing the storms of our lives.

1.         When trouble is headed your way. . .always do what Jesus did.

When the storms of life rise up against you. . .seek to be at peace.

When troubles come your way. . . do you find yourself having sleepless nights?   Maybe tossing and turning. . .worrying about what may or may not happen.

Don’t you think Jesus knew there was a weather pattern forming . . .about to churn into a dangerous storm?

We should follow His direction as found in Mark 4:38 in the New King James Bible which says:

“But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?”

The disciples had done exactly as Jesus told them to do.

They shoved off from the shore to cross over to the other side. 

The storm came about so quickly that the disciples were swamped.

I must admit this sounds far too familiar.  We have lived this experience.

We have been simply going about our business doing what we knew to be the will of God.

In the one moment things were fine.  In the next moment we found ourselves surrounded by a storm...and taking on water.

How do we handle the storms. . .the adversities when one comes upon us suddenly?

Matthew 6:34 in the Message Bible offers some great advice:

"Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don't get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes.”

I love reading about the faith and spiritual exploits of Smith Wigglesworth.  How do we handle the storms of life and attacks of the enemy?

Listen to how Brother Wigglesworth handled one encounter with the devil.

"We were sleeping one night, when the manifestation of evil filled the room and the spirit of fear gripped both of us. Polly was so frightened she could not open her eyes. I suddenly sat up, in the bed, and saw the devil. I rubbed my eyes to be sure, it was him. I said, ‘Oh! It's only you.' I then turned to Polly and told her to go back to sleep, it was nothing of consequence, and I laid my head back down. Suddenly an overwhelming sense of peace and love filled the room and we had the most blessed sleep ever."

In the middle of the storms of life. . . learn to let Jesus be your peace factor . If He did it for Smith Wigglesworth, He will do it for you.

2.         You gotta know God will never tell you to do anything dangerous without a way of escape.

Mark 4:35 in the Amplified Bible says:

“On that same day [when] evening had come, He said to them, Let us go over to the other side [of the lake].”

Do you believe the Son of God knew what was going to happen to that boat. . .before it ever happened?

Of course He did!!

Acts 2:23 in the New Living Translation says:

“But God knew what would happen, and his prearranged plan was carried out when Jesus was betrayed. With the help of lawless Gentiles, you nailed him to a cross and killed him.”

If Jesus knew He was going to be betrayed and crucified . . . He most certainly knew about a storm on the Sea of Galilee.

 And even if He didn’t … He knew His Father had an answer to the problem …the same way we know God always has an answer for us.

Since Jesus knew the storm was coming. . .do you really think He would have put the disciples. . .those closest to Him … in a position to drown and die?  Of course, not!

In everything you face in life. . . no matter how great the temptation or seemingly insurmountable the problem may be . . .God always provides a way of escape.

1 Corinthians 10:13 says:

“There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.”

When you’re facing the storms of life. . . God is not in heaven wringing His hands wondering what is going to happen to you next.

In Numbers 11 we read where the Children of Israel were hungry and whining.  God heard them and told Moses how he was going to provide for them.

Numbers 11:19-20 in the New Living Translation says:

“And it won’t be for just a day or two, or for five or ten or even twenty.  You will eat it [meat] for a whole month until you gag and are sick of it. For you have rejected the Lord, who is here among you, and you have whined to him, saying, “Why did we ever leave Egypt?”’

Now this miracle promise was so amazing that even Moses, who had faithfully believed God in every instance, had a hard time believing it… for He said to the Lord in Numbers 11:21:

“There are 600,000 men alone … yet you promise them meat for a whole month!  If we butcher all our flocks … it won’t be enough !  We would have to catch every fish in the ocean to fulfill your promise!”

Verse 23 in the Living Bible gives us God’s overpowering response to Moses’ doubt.   One that is so powerful, we need to take it to heart in a very personal way:

“ Then the Lord said to Moses, “When did I become weak? . .

God is not weak!   He never has been and He never will be .  It is not only His will… but He wants to show Himself mighty on our behalf.  However … we must trust Him for it to be so.

Romans 4:20 in the Amplified Bible says:

“No unbelief or distrust made him waver (doubtingly question) concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong and was empowered by faith as he gave praise and glory to God.”

Not only is God not weak. . .He will show Himself strong on your behalf.

Psalm 68:28 in the New American Standard Version of the Bible says:

“Your God has commanded your strength; Show Yourself strong, O God, who have acted on our behalf.

2 Chronicles 16:9 in the New King James Bible says:

“ For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf ofthose whose heartisloyal to Him….”

3.         God is not moved by the adversities we face. . .and neither should we be.

Let me give you an absolute fact. . .if you’re doing what God has called you to do . . . fulfilling His vision for your life. . .being obedient to His divine direction. . . stuff is going to happen.

The enemy will not sit idly by.  He wants to do whatever he can to render you ineffective for and to the Kingdom of God.

The disciples were with Jesus 24/7 yet fear made them forget who they were traveling with.   Even the disciples had to learn to trust Jesus by the doubt-creating circumstances they faced.

I remember one airline flight where a violent thunderstorm was in the distance as the plane leveled off at its cruising altitude.  As we drew closer and closer to the thunderstorm. . .the lady sitting next to me became increasing nervous and fearful about the storm.

I listened quietly until she commented she didn’t want to die in a plane crash.  I confidently told her that our plane was not going to crash. . .that we were going to arrive safely at our destination.

When she asked me how I could be so sure. . .I said:  “because I’m on this plane and God still has a lot for me to accomplish in my life.”   Then I told her He had plans for her as well.

That’s when I discovered she loved the Lord and was a Christian but her faith was weakened because of facing fear without faith.

Isaiah 41:10 in the Message Bible says:

“Don't panic. I'm with you.  There's no need to fear for I'm your God.  I'll give you strength. I'll help you. I'll hold you steady, keep a firm grip on you."

Even in the midst of your personal storms. . .God has a firm grip on you.

4.         When in the midst of the storms of life. . .call on Him and quote the Word.

When trouble comes. . .who will you call on for help?  Not Ghostbusters. . .but the Holy Ghost.

Psalm 86:7 says:

“In the day of my trouble I will call upon thee: for thou wilt answer me.”

If you need the peace of God in your life. . .if you need deliverance from the storms of adversity. . .heed the words of Jeremiah 29:12-14 in the Amplified Bible:

“Then you will call upon Me, and you will come and pray to Me, and I will hear and heed you.   Then you will seek Me, inquire for, and require Me [as a vital necessity] and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.  I will be found by you, says the Lord, and I will release you from captivity . . .”

Now here’s a revelation.  You can’t quote what you don’t know.

Matthew 22:29 in the New Living Translation says:

“Jesus replied, `Your mistake is that you don’t know the Scriptures, and you don’t know the power of God.’”

All professional athletes go to training camps before playing in games that count.

You need spiritual training. . .so when you encounter the storms of life you can be victorious.   Or else, you fate will be worse than having a bad season. Your Bible is your training manual for every season of your life.

Spiritual preparation always precedes victories over the storms of life.

5.         When you rely on the Word. . .all your fears will leave .

The best reason not to be afraid. . .is because the Word of God tells you not to. If you’re already counting on some of the Word … why not count on all of the Word?

I could give you numerous scriptures but I’m only going to go over four.  The truth of the matter is. . .one could be enough.

First, Isaiah 41:10 in the Contemporary English Version says:

“ Don't be afraid. I am with you . Don't tremble with fear. I am your God. I will make you strong, as I protect you with my arm and give you victories.”

If you’ve been unsuccessful. . .don’t worry or fret. . .the Word says that God. . .not your relatives …not your boss. . .co-workers. . .best friend or anyone else will make you victorious.

God brings you the victories you desire.

Second, Psalm 118:6 in the Message Bible says:

“God's now at my side and I'm not afraid; who would dare lay a hand on me?”       

I love watching movies where it seems that all is lost. . .the good guy is about to go down to defeat or perhaps, even death. . .when suddenly the cavalry shows up and the good guy is saved.

Third, Deuteronomy 20:1 in the Message Bible says:

“. . . In a few minutes you're going to do battle with your enemies. Don't waver in resolve. Don't fear. Don't hesitate. Don't panic. God, your God, is right there with you, fighting with you against your enemies, fighting to win."

Don’t waver. . .don’t doubt. . .don’t fear. . .don’t worry. . .don’t hesitate. . .don’t panic because your God will bring you the victory.

Fourth, Psalm 139:5 in the Message Bible says:

“…You know when I leave and when I get back; I'm never out of your sight . You know everything I'm going to say before I start the first sentence.

“I look behind me and you're there, then up ahead and you're there, too—your reassuring presence, coming and going.  This is too much, too wonderful—I can't take it all in!”

6.         When facing the storms of life. . .tell your circumstances and those in your boat to be still.

Sometimes you don’t even have to tell your friends. . .more properly, known as acquaintances to be quiet. . .because at the first sign of adversity. . . they’re gone faster than a snow man in 80 degree sunshine.

However, for those who either comment before bolting or hang around. . . never let the second voice distract you from what you know to be spiritual truth and your ability to allow God’s power to work through you .

Mark 4:39 in the Amplified Bible says:

“And He arose and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, Hush now! Be still (muzzled)! And the wind ceased (sank to rest as if exhausted by its beating) and there was [immediately] a great calm (a perfect peacefulness).”

When Jesus got up. . .He assessed the situation. . .then He rebuked the winds and the waves.

The literal Greek translation of be still is “be muzzled” or “be gagged.”

This next point is very important.  It’s critical to note Jesus did not pray about the storm He was facing.

Jesus spoke to the storm and commanded it to stop causing trouble.

One other point. . .

Have you ever thought about how you want others to perceive you. . .what you want them to say or think about you?

Truthfully, I can think of several ways I’d want to be spoken of. . .but none more satisfying than what’s found in Mark 4:41 in the Message Bible which says:

“They were in absolute awe, staggered. “Who is this, anyway?" they asked. "Wind and sea at his beck and call!"

You’re probably thinking . . . yes, but that was Jesus.  I understand that but what about John 14:12 in the Classic Amplified Bible which says:

“I assure you, most solemnly I tell you, if anyone steadfastly believes in Me, he will himself be able to do the things that I do; and he will do even greater things than these, because I go to the Father.”

7.         Always be willing to learn in every situation .

Philippians 4:11 in the New Living Translation says:

“I’m not saying this because I’m in any need. I’ve learned to be content in whatever situation I’m in.”

This scripture is most often misunderstood . . . it’s not a scriptural admonition to ‘settle for’ in life.

Go to www.debtfreearmy.org and search for “The Difference Between Contentment And Complacency.”  The teaching is definitely a game changer.

I’ve gone through some things in my life. . .and I’ve wanted to learn everything I could in those situations. . .so I would never have to experience them again.

Philippians 4:12 in the New Living Translation says:

“I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little.”

God clearly wants us to learn how to live blessed, full of joy and content in every situation, circumstance, problem and adversity that we face.

Meditate on Philippians 4:13 in the Message Bible:

“Whatever I have, wherever I am, I can make it through anything in the One who makes me who I am.”

The only way God can make us who He wants us to be. . .is by our willingness to learn from every situation we face.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4 in the Message Bible says:

“All praise to the God and Father of our Master, Jesus the Messiah! Father of all mercy! God of all healing counsel ! He comes alongside us when we go through hard times, and before you know it, he brings us alongside someone else who is going through hard times so that we can be there for that person just as God was there for us.”

Immediately after having breast cancer surgery on January 15, 2015 . . . the oncologist (cancer doctor) told me I needed to take chemotherapy.

I asked why.

That wasn’t an unreasonable question because my lymph nodes were free of cancer.  The surgeon had sent the mass removed from my chest from an incision that measured thirteen inches long, two inches wide and two and ½ inches deep to be analyzed and the results were negative. . .no cancer was found.

I told the oncologist I would have to pray about this decision.

As I prayed the Lord brought 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 in the Message Bible to my remembrance which says:

“All praise to the God and Father of our Master, Jesus the Messiah! Father of all mercy! God of all healing counsel! He comes alongside us when we go through hard times, and before you know it, he brings us alongside someone else who is going through hard times so that we can be there for that person just as God was there for us.”

I have used that scripture on dozens and dozens of occasions to encourage people going through the storms of life.

This time the Lord used it to show me that the decision to take chemo was not about me but about others …meaning the people He would put in my path that I would encourage and pray for.

I’ve been there for others nearly 30 times since my surgery. . .the latest being two days ago.

This lady had driven about 30 miles to position herself to hear what I had to say to her though she had no idea that’s why she made the trip.  Her heart was encouraged and her faith strengthened by our visit. God is incredibly faithful.

Your Heavenly Father is not only waiting to shield you from the storms. . .He’s ever ready to empower and enlighten you to achieve your destiny.

And the best part. . .He’s available 24/7.

In this article, we will explore what it means to battle the storms of life and how, as Christians, we can overcome them with God’s help. So, grab your Bible, and let’s dig in…

Life has many storms that believers must navigate. Every Christian encounters storms in their life. I know I have faced some very difficult ones myself. Learning how to go through them with Biblical principles of faith and in relationship with God is crucial.

Standing strong in our faith can sometimes be challenging when facing intense storms, but there are several Biblical truths to lean on and several Biblical examples to draw from when facing these battles.

Here, we will explore ways to overcome adversity, stand strong in faith, and identify Biblical ways to remain steadfast during storms. These are important tools for every Christian.

10 Ways To Help Overcome The Storms Of Life

Overcoming adversity is not always easy, but there are some anchors that every Christian can use to keep themselves steady when battling the storms of life.

Every storm is different, and every challenge brings with it its own adversities, but there are always ways to stand strong in what we believe and navigate the storm with the grace of God.

Here are some of the best ways to overcome adversities that we face during a storm.

1. Jesus Has Overcome The World

The first thing to do to overcome adversity when facing an intense storm is to remember that Jesus has overcome the world and everything that we have to deal with in it.

In John 16:33, Jesus says…

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

When life blows a storm your way, stand fast in the knowledge that Jesus is the one who overcomes it. You do not have to overcome it on your own.

Receive peace from Him, knowing that in the midst of tribulation, you can stand with Him as He overcomes the storm. He is truly our Prince of Peace and Jehovah Shalom .

Understanding Scriptures such as these is the best way to battle the storms of life and overcome adversity.

2. Jesus Calms The Storms

When life becomes difficult, when you are facing adversities, and when you are dealing with intense storms, remember that Jesus calms storms.

In Matthew 8:23-27, Jesus is in a boat with His disciples, sleeping, when a storm arises, and the disciples become fearful and anxious and wake Him up for help. Jesus speaks to the wind and the waves, and they obey Him and cease.

When you are facing storms of life, pray. Believe in Jesus and His authority, and ask Him to calm the storm.

Receive His peace, stand in His authority, and sleep in the boat!

There is nothing better to do in a storm than to rely on Jesus and rest in His peace. The storm quickly loses its power when you trust in the Lord, and you don’t focus on fear.

3. Faith Overcomes The World

  for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.  5  Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God. – 1 John 5:4-5 NKJV

This passage of Scripture is among the go-to verses for many Christians when they are confronted with the storms of life.

In context, in 1 John 5, John writes that our faith is in Jesus. We believe Jesus is the Son of God, and we love God through Him.

He also writes that the love of God is that we keep His commandments, and His commandment is that we should love Him.

It continues to say that whoever is born of God, which we are when we become born again and love God, overcomes the world. We who are born of God, we who have faith in Jesus and believe that He is the Son of God, it is our faith that overcomes the world.

This is an excellent anchor for every believer. Know that when you face the storms of life, your faith is what will overcome the adversity. Your faith in Jesus overcomes the world, regardless of what it throws at you or what it puts in your way.

With faith, like a mustard seed, you can move a mountain into the sea!

Trust in Jesus, love Him well, stand strong in faith in Him, and you will thrive in the midst of adversity and overcome all that you have to deal with.

4. Put On The Armor Of God

When facing the storms of life, a Christian can apply the armor of God to stand firm in their faith and confidently face the trials that life brings.

Ephesians 6:11-17 says..

“Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints.”

This passage of Scripture teaches us that the armor of God…truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, faith, the reality of our salvation in Jesus, the Bible, and prayer are our defense when we face adversities.

Understanding that we do not wrestle against natural things but against spiritual things. This is huge because a lot of times, storms in our lives are not just spiritual attacks, but the enemy uses people to attack us.

And we must remind ourselves that they are not who we are battling.

Remember, stand then in the faith that God has given you when you come against storms, and pray this prayer. Pray for the armor of God, and you will withstand the evil day.

5. Ask Other Believers To Pray For You

A great way to get through difficult times, adversities, and storms is to gather with other believers and pray together. This is extremely beneficial! I can’t tell you how often I have met with friends or my church family and processed and prayed together. It’s like a healing balm.

It is highly Biblical to pray for one another, especially when dealing with adversities and difficult circumstances.

Stand with other believers, pray together, seek the Lord for wisdom and guidance, and the storm you are facing will quickly dissipate, or you will find the way through it in the Lord, with the support of the family of God.

6. Speak With Leaders

Pastors and shepherds that you trust are invaluable when dealing with hard seasons and storms.

Take the time to reach out to your leaders, a pastor in your church, or an elder, and ask to meet with them. Explain to them the struggles that you are facing, and they will be able to provide sound wisdom and guidance.

Counsel from your leaders is always a sure way to navigate storms, and these are good people to have with you as you deal with life’s challenges.

7. Take A Break, And Rest In God

Sometimes when we are faced with a storm, the best thing to do is to take a break from it all.

Step away from the storm and the situation for a short while, spend time with God, rest in Him, pray, and be still with Him. Find rest.

Sleep, eat a good meal, speak with your friends, and distance yourself from the issues, even if only for a few hours. Even a little bit can help your body, and soul to relax.

Sometimes, finding some room to breathe when facing such immense challenges, seeking the Lord, and being with believers is the only way to find respite from the storm.

This will often bring you to a space where you can hear God clearly and find the solutions to the problems or the strength to keep moving through the storm.

When facing the storms of life and the adversities that they bring, stand in the faith of Jesus Christ. Meditate on the Word, pray the prayers in the Bible, stand in your identity as a child of God, and gather with believers.

Storms do not have to dictate the way you respond to life, and they do not have to decide the steadiness of your faith. Do not be afraid; only believe (Luke 8:50).

Some Lessons I’ve Learned From Reflecting On Life In 150 Essays

As I look back over my last 149 essays, I see memories, heartbreaks, and joys, all poured into my essays of size 12 font. I see times I was feeling high on life, and simultaneously, times I was struggling and felt as though I was stuck in the dark.. But even more than a simple timeline of moments and checkpoints, I see someone trying desperately to make sense of a messy world full of complicated emotions. I see someone a little bit lost at times, a little bit curious, and also a bit hopeful – someone just trying her best to seek meaning, inspiration, and above all, healing. 

It is an understatement to say that writing has been therapeutic for me. When I have felt lonely, or afraid, or let down, I have often sought comfort in writing. Words have been magical – they have been a way to gain a new perspective on my life and on the lives of all of the people around me. Writing has unfailingly encouraged me to look twice at life – to examine what lies beneath the surface, rather than accepting things at face value. 

And when I look back at all of these thoughts I have spilled across the white pages of my MacBook, I see many themes that seem to pop into my life over and over again, with each passing year. These themes are mainly lessons – those that I have learned, and those that I am still learning (or relearning).  Looking over my writing, I can’t help but notice how as human beings, we are constantly learning. We never seem to stop changing, growing, or healing.  

While I do not have all of the answers (or any answers with certainty), I do hope that some of the thoughts I have gathered and the lessons I have learned through examining the world through words may resonate with you as well. I hope they can bring you some comfort or reassurance in the midst of the mountains and valleys of your own life. 

1. It can feel comforting to seek home in nostalgia – to live in our memories, to replay them over and over again, like little film strips that continue to roll on. But at some point, we have to remember that life is still happening and the earth is still spinning, right here, right now. At some point, we have to be here for ourselves and for our hearts in the present. We have to be brave enough to hope that the present and the future will be just as good, if not better, than the old memories we are living in.

2. I’m learning that joy doesn’t necessarily mean the absence of sadness, and grief doesn’t necessarily imply the absence of joy. Though we often want to choose an either o r, life is not quite as binary as we make it out to be.

3. I’m realizing that being at peace with life doesn’t mean that everything is perfect, or that we don’t have any troubles or tribulations or low energy nagging at our hearts. Being at peace doesn’t mean that life is wonderful, or that we aren’t stressed, or facing anxiety. More so, being at peace means finding some form of “okayness” amidst all of the parts of life that are not (yet) “okay.” It means sitting amidst the chaos and making the conscious decision to remain calm. To be okay. Ultimately, finding peace means acknowledging the storm and coexisting with it, rather than sitting in the eye of the tornado.

4. It’s the hardest lesson in the world, but sometimes, the best thing we can do is let them go. Sometimes we have to say goodbye to someone good and wait patiently for someone better. 

5. Something odd about life is that the right choices don’t always feel right in our bodies. Sometimes, though difficult, we have to find the courage within us to pursue what we need, rather than what we want in the present. We have to take care of ourselves by honoring what we know is best for us in the long run. And oftentimes, in the present, it really does hurt a lot. The pain doesn’t mean the decision is wrong. Sometimes the best choices can leave us let down and hurt. But later on, we will be thankful.  

6. I don’t believe that everything happens for a reason. I don’t believe in fate. But I do believe that we can give meaning to some of our hardest most heartbreaking moments. We don’t need to build an identity that is rooted in our grief or in our trauma or pain, but if or when we want to, we can allow the healing process to bring out our best. We can grow new, fresh roots, and we can choose to define ourselves by how we rise back up again.

7. We can’t expect others to heal us – no one can love us so much that we automatically love ourselves. But maybe, when someone does love us, they can remind us what love feels like. They can help us to believe that we are loveable. And this can be the first step of loving ourselves – knowing that we deserve to be loved.

8. Grief is ugly and painful and devastating. Grief is dark swollen eyes and tear-stained cheeks. Grief hurts.  But we cannot deny the sheer beauty that grief holds. We cannot deny that grief is, in some ways, a gift. To grieve means that we are blessed enough to have loved and to have been loved by someone special – and this is remarkable. Grief means we are missing someone – someone who touched our lives in an irreplaceable way. And thus, I’d like to believe that the sadness and grief we endure when we lose someone close to us is simply the price we pay for loving them. And there’s something so dear and precious about this.

9. As hard as it is to hear, some people aren’t meant to stay in our lives forever. They are passerbys, like boats in the night. And though they may only stay for a short while, they stay safely in our hearts indefinitely.  Temporary people can leave permanent footprints.

10. Anxiety and overthinking do not change the situation. They only turn a gentle rain shower into a hurricane.

11. We can miss someone, but we can’t lose ourselves when we lose them. We can miss them, but we can’t let our lives be over when they are gone. Because we still have our lives to live. And we still have so much love left in us to give. 12. We don’t need a reason to have hope – we don’t need evidence or logic, as much as we think we do. We don’t even need to fully understand or grasp what hope is. We just have to find it in our hearts to believe that hope exists. We have to bravely decide to give in to hope, even when we can’t see it or touch it – even when we don’t know if it is there. When life is dark, we have to believe that there is something still worth living for around the corner. And this belief – this hope – this is what will help us move forward. 

13. It’s okay to find home in another person. It’s one of the sweetest, purest parts of life. But somewhere along the way, we must also find home within ourselves.

14. We know we are healing when we piece back together our broken parts and turn them into something greater than what we had before.

15. Perhaps, when someone doesn’t love us or doesn’t fight for us, it isn’t actually a reflection of us. Perhaps their inability to love us does not mean that we are unloveable, or hard to love. Maybe it means that they have been hurt one too many times before and that their walls are now built high of concrete and stone. Or maybe it means that they have been defeated by love one too many times – maybe love continues to let them down, time and time again. And maybe, even if they want to love us, they simply cannot. And we can keep trying and trying to knock down those walls. But perhaps when they don’t love us, the very best thing we can do is to hug them close, wish them the best, and then walk away.  Because even if they were special, we each deserve someone who is ready to let us in fully.

16. Most of the time, when we think we need closure from someone else, what we truly need is closure from ourselves – permission from ourselves to let things be. To accept the ending and to understand that it’s time to let the ending stay an ending. We must find the strength to seek peace and healing on our own. Healing is our responsibility, not the responsibility of the person who hurt us.

17. Sometimes growth is quiet and subtle and doesn’t look like growth. Sometimes growth is simply viewing a situation from a fresh perspective. Sometimes growth is trying something new, despite whether or not it ends up being a good experience. Sometimes growth just means making it through each day and noticing one small good thing about the world each night. Some seasons are for making leaps and bounds, while others are simply for surviving and just being. Both seasons are important. Both are needed. 

18. How do we know when we are healing? I think we know that we are coming close when we feel immense gratitude that something happened, rather than devastated by the fact that it ended. 

19. We don’t always need to find the silver lining. Sometimes really crappy, awful things happen, and there is much more bad than good in the world. Sometimes we go through devastating, heartbreaking experiences that don’t have a silver lining, and the idea of trying to find one only hurts us further. In these really rough moments, we don’t need to search for the light. But maybe, when we are ready, we can remind ourselves that there is still light in the world. Maybe there’s no shining light in our situation, but there is still goodness somewhere out there. And hopefully knowing this will help us make it to the other side

Perhaps the secret isn’t avoiding pain or numbing ourselves from pain, but rather, putting our energy into cultivating joy and peace. Perhaps when we value joy over pain, life becomes a little bit easier.

Storms of Life: We Are Meant To Go Through, Not Camp Out There

When was the last time you faced one of life’s storms? Maybe you’re in the midst of one now. I have to admit, at times it feels like one tsunami after another has hit our family over the last few years. On a recent episode of Your Hope-Filled Perspective Podcast , I interviewed Cynthia Cavanaugh about staying anchored during the storms of life. As I’ve spent some time pondering some of the recent storms of life, I’ve learned a few lessons, including the fact that we are meant to go through the storms of life—not camp out there.

With the recent upheaval of the world, there’s so much we don’t know. So much misinformation. So many rumors. And for many, so many fears. I have missed worshipping in person, together. I’ve had concerns for students, families, and businesses. In so many ways, I’ve wanted to turn back the hands of time. But instead, He beckons that His way is through .

“When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you. For I am the Lord, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior” (Isaiah 43:2-3a NLT).

Go Through Grief

The year 2019 was particularly painful. We lost 19 friends and family to death, mostly from cancer. No sooner would I find out about someone’s new diagnosis, and then I’d hear of the death of someone else I loved, cared for, and had been pouring out my prayers on their behalf. I believed (and still believe) God can and does heal, and yet my heart ached for the earthly losses of each friend and family member who wasn’t healed on this earth, but now lived healed and whole with Him. Grief set in, and each new death seemed to compound the grief I already felt. I found comfort in the Scriptures that reminded me that “Jesus wept.” So I knew He didn’t condemn my grief, but instead allowed it. Yet I also knew He didn’t want me to stay in a permanent state of grief, but rather to journey through it with Him.

His way is through .

Go Through Cancer

My husband has been diagnosed with three different types of cancer, and I’ve received a cancer diagnosis twice. Each time it has been a journey, reaching for the hem of his garment, waiting on His will and His way. He never intended for cancer to be a way of life, but He has allowed us to go through it, trusting Him to see us through it. There were so many times during each diagnosis and subsequent treatment when I thought for certain one or both of us might drown in the rivers of difficulty, and yet I knew He was in the rivers with us.

Go Through Miscarriage

“I’m so sorry. I can’t find a heartbeat. We’ve lost the pregnancy.” I sat stunned, as the doctor delivered the words that I could not have been more shocked to hear. I had just felt the baby kick the day before. And I had been giddy with excitement over nursery plans and picking out baby names. This baby was a gift from God, until it wasn’t. “How could this happen?” I wondered. I was healthy, and I had “done everything right.” Grief was real, and God was allowing me to feel it. Even though He didn’t intend for me to stay there, it was something I needed to go through .

Go Through Depression

Having treated thousands of patients in my career, no one was more surprised when I journeyed through my own valley of depression into the dark night of my soul (If you’re not familiar with my story, and the hope that is offered, you can find my book, “ Hope Prevails: Insights From a Doctor’s Personal Journey Through Depression ” that chronicles both my experience and the hope that I found, here . I’ll never forget crying out to God, and honestly sharing that if that was going to be my lot in life, I wasn’t sure I wanted to continue living. Fortunately for me, He was patient and gentle as He revealed that that was not His intention. Instead, He wanted to bring me through depression so I could share hope to others who suffered.

“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me” (Psalm 23:4).

Go Through Job Loss

I’ll never forget the day my husband walked through the door in the middle of the day, finding me at the desk. “I’ve been let go as part of the company-wide reduction in force.” Wait…what? You lost your job? We had young children, a mortgage to pay, school loans to repay. We didn’t know what God’s plan was, but we trusted that this turn of events didn’t take Him by surprise, and He knew how He would see us through it. We weren’t going to stay unemployed. But it was a season we had to travel through until we were on the other side, just like the disciples in the storm on the lake with Jesus.

Now on one of those days Jesus and His disciples got into a boat, and He said to them, “Let us go over to the other side of the lake.” So they launched out. But as they were sailing along He fell asleep; and a fierce gale of wind descended on the lake, and they began to be swamped and to be in danger. They came to Jesus and woke Him up, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” And He got up and rebuked the wind and the surging waves, and they stopped, and it became calm. And He said to them, “Where is your faith?” They were fearful and amazed, saying to one another, “Who then is this, that He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey Him?” (Luke 8:22-25)

As our family has journeyed through many of life’s storms, I’ve learned a few things:

  • We are meant to go through the storms of life—not camp out there permanently. His way is through . (Isaiah 43:2-3a)
  • When Jesus told the disciples “let us go over to the other side of the lake,” He knew they would get there, but they forgot that promise when the storms arose. (Luke 8:22-25) We have to hold onto God’s hand and His promises when the storms of life arise.
  • Even when we have to go through the storms of life, God never leaves us to go through them alone. “I will never leave you or abandon you” (Isaiah 43:2).
  • Storms may bring pain, doubt, or discouragement, yet He offers to be our comforter through the storms. (Psalm 23:4).
  • Regardless of what the storm is, we don’t have to have all the answers, we just have to turn to the One who does. “For I am the Lord your God, who holds your right hand, who says to you, ‘Do not fear, I will help you’” (Isaiah 41:13).

I’ve often thought about how we tell ourselves and others to “get over it”. But, we must “go through it” to experience God’s mercy and peace. We will experience the pain, but also the peace.

One of the hardest tsunamis I’ve walked through is when my daughter became pregnant at age 15. But God…provided everything we needed. I didn’t have medical insurance at that time, but God…paid every penny of both of Kim’s hospital stays. But God…our church surrounded us during and after her pregnancy. But God…some of the family of the baby’s father turned their backs on us, but today we are the closest of friends. But God…today I have a wonderful 23-year-old grandson. Praise God!!

Every time I go through difficulties, I say to myself and remind God as well, “This too shall pass.” It has been such a blessing to see God work through my hard times and see His hand of love and comfort. Keeping my eyes fixed on Jesus is also another way to survive health issues, relationship problems and the pandemic. I went through a very difficult storm in my life in April 2015. I had an acute liver failure and received two livers. First liver failed after 3 days. Got a second liver two days later. God gave me a promise before in hospital saying that He will take me through. I hold onto this promise.

The Storms of life

Scripture reference: Mark 4:35–5:1

‘You may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith . . . may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.’ ~  1 Peter 1:6-7

In the book of Mark we read about a terrible storm. The disciples were with Jesus on a boat crossing the Sea of Galilee. When a “furious squall came up,” the disciples—among them some seasoned fishermen—were afraid for their lives (4:37-38). Did God not care? Weren’t they handpicked by Jesus and closest to Him? Weren’t they obeying Jesus who told them to “go over to the other side”?. Why, then, were they going through such a turbulent time?

No one is exempt from the storms of life. But just as the disciples who initially feared the storm later came to revere Christ more, so the storms we face can bring us to a deeper knowledge of God. “Who is this,” the disciples pondered, “even the wind and the waves obey him!”. Through our trials we can learn that no storm is big enough to prevent God from accomplishing His will.

While we may not understand why God allows trials to enter our lives, we thank Him that through them we can come to know who He is. We live to serve Him because He has preserved our lives.

Overcoming The Storms In Your Life

Life is full of challenges and everyday people are faced with different kinds of difficulties. We see people on the road and we never know what kind of worries they’re experiencing in their lives. Someone once said that people should always show kindness to each other because the person we meet at a bus stop or in the subway may be going through a storm. Unfortunately, not all people have the strength or the courage to face the snags in life. Some fail to rise above it and some just give up trying. During these difficult times, there are many ways to hold our head above the water and stay afloat. While it is true that people have their own ways of dealing with the big challenges in their lives, there are some ways on how to make it easier. Here are some useful advice.

Facing The Storm

The storms in our life can be scary and it can make us feel frightened. We can hide from it, deny its existence, or escape from it. Or we can face it and find peace.

Acceptance is the initial step in facing any storm in life. Hiding from a problem by not taking it head-on will only make the situation worst. To deny its existence is even worse because the problem is not addressed at all. While some people choose to escape from the big storms by committing suicide, nothing good comes out of it as it does not solve anything and the person only ends up hurting the people he loves.

The best way to deal with life’s challenges is to face it. What is the problem? What is causing it? What can I do about it? How can I solve this problem? Once we face the storm, we are on our way to overcoming it.

Staying Positive

Of course, it’s easier to just succumb to loneliness and pain but it won’t do anything to help you overcome life’s storms. The death of a loved one may be one of life’s strongest storms and it can be the most difficult to face. However, you are alive and life goes on even when the person you loved deeply is gone. Open your eyes to all that’s good in your life. Be thankful that you are alive.  When you stay positive instead of looking at all the negative things happening right now, you’ll have a better chance of surviving the storms in life.

Learning From It

Most people going through challenges in life won’t realize that there is something to be learned from the experience. If this big problem can be prevented from ever happening again, then be aware of its causes. Perhaps, better solutions can also be considered just in case a new challenge presents itself in the future.

After every storm, pick up the pieces, mend the broken parts, and move on. The storms in our lives shouldn’t make you frightened or weak. Instead, look at storms in your life as something that can make you a stronger and a better person

It’s been a week. When forecasters first spotted a hurricane that would likely hit Florida, the entire state went on high alert. It was billed as the largest hurricane on record in the Atlantic and while everyone in the state would be affected, it was uncertain precisely where it would hit.

We’ve seen some massive storms over the last few weeks. Irma left thousands with damage and without power. Texas and Louisiana are recovering from record floods after Hurricane Harvey. And western states have been fighting dozens of destructive wildfires.

As I write this, another hurricane is looming and remains a threat for the Eastern United States. Only time will tell whether we’ll need to prepare for another hit or it will spin off harmlessly into the Atlantic.

Truth is, none of us wants to go through a storm. Not just hurricanes, but storms in our finances, in our jobs and in our families. If only the days could be all sunshine and clear skies. Those are the kinds of days we pray for. And the kinds of days we think we’re entitled to.

But storms are actually vital for us. God uses difficulty not only to reveal himself but to shape us to become more like Christ.

It’s not just that storms teach. It’s that there are lessons we can only understand in a storm.

Lessons the storms of life can teach us

1. storms teach us real gratitude.

It’s easy to be grateful when things in life are going well. When the bank account is full and the children are behaving. But even in difficulty we can find things to be grateful for. Stopping to look for God’s good hand and keep a daily gratitude list helps us see that God is at work all around us even when circumstances are hard.

It’s while Paul was in prison that he wrote he’d “learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.” ( Phil 4:11-13, NIV )

2. Storms teach us real joy

Paul taught another truth in prison – to rejoice IN all things. “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” ( Phil 4:4, NIV )

After my husband died suddenly , I wondered if I’d ever feel real joy again. I thought it would come months later, after I’d processed the shock and grief. To my surprise, God brought moments of joy in the midst of grief. Evenings with friends. Birthday celebrations with family. Little surprises in my day.

Storms show us that real joy comes in the midst of the hard, not after it’s all resolved.

3. Storms teach us real peace

We’re apt to think peace is when the kids are in bed, the house is clean and quiet, and our favorite movie is on for the evening. But that’s not peace; that’s calm.

Peace isn’t the absence of difficulty. It’s the presence of God.

This too, Paul found while in prison, writing: “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” ( Phil 4:7, NIV )

God’s presence brings peace even when circumstances are storming around us.

4. Storms teach us real treasure

The world tells us we need bigger, newer and more. A few years ago, we evacuated for a powerful, oncoming hurricane. Before it hit, I could have given you a long list of things I thought I needed. But as we evacuated, none of that mattered.

In the storms that shatter life as you know it, what’s really valuable becomes crystal clear. Again from prison, Paul affirmed this: “What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things.” ( Phil 3:8, NIV )

5. Storms teach us real strength

We can usually handle the mild annoyances and problems that surface on easy days. But trials bring us to the end of ourselves.

In those times, we realize we’re completely dependent on God. We need him to give us wisdom, to replace our fear with faith and to give us strength to battle the storm. But that’s a good place to be. God designed us to be utterly dependent on him.

“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’” ( 2 Cor 12:9, NIV )

6. Storms teach us real faithfulness

It’s easy to quote the promises of God when life is good. But do they hold up in the hard?

Storms prove they do! We can see God’s faithfulness in ways we never see on sunny days. That’s when we can cement our own faith, when it becomes deeply personal because we see firsthand how God meets our needs and takes care of us in the hard. It’s in the storms we so often see God do things we couldn’t even ask or imagine.

“All the ways of the Lord are loving and faithful for those who keep the demands of his covenant.” ( Psalm 25:10, NIV )

7. Storm teach us about real home

Trials in life remind us that this world is not our home. Painful diagnoses, deep grief and financial losses are stark reminders that this world is temporary . We’re often forced to let go of things that don’t matter in the long – and the short – run.

The storms of life help us turn our focus from building our own kingdom to building God’s kingdom.

And as brutal as storms can be, scripture tells us “our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.” ( 2 Cor 4:17, NIV )

None of us are immune from the storms of life. While we don’t know how or when they will hit, God has assured us they will come.

But just like hurricanes, we can prepare.

First, we need to ensure  we’ve trusted our eternal life to God .  Second, we can strengthen our faith through regular Bible study , prayer and obedience. And finally, we can join with other believers to gather as a body and help weather storms together.

Good stuff Lisa. We are either in a storm, coming out of one or a new one is looming close by. Can’t avoid them or run from them but we can run through them and be victorious if Jesus is present with us.

The day the giant piece of glass (for a display case that my husband was building) shattered into thousands of pieces all over the living room Berber carpet and the kitchen floor, was not one of my best. Once I was certain my husband was not badly injured (only a minor cut on his hand), my mind went to the daunting task of how we would ever clean this all up and be assured that we removed every tiny shard of glass from the carpet in which it was embedded and hidden. My nervous system , feeling the major “threat” of having to spend the next several hours cleaning this up (it took two and a half), and the fear of how we would make the room safe again, was enough to throw me into a combination of fight-or-flight (anxious and frustrated) and freeze (initially immobilized out of overwhelm).

Having had recent practice in the middle of the night navigating unwanted wakings at 3 a.m. and simply being awake for hours, I remembered a few strategies to help me navigate the unexpected “storms” of anxiety and intense emotions that come with some of life’s daily challenges.

What do we do when we encounter frustrating external situations out of our control? We can let irritability and anxiety consume us (I’ve been there), or we can turn to some strategies to steady us amidst the storms. Here’s what I’ve found helpful.

When you encounter unexpected, stormy seas, you can:

1. Drop your anchor. When your nervous system reacts to a perceived threat by throwing your body into a fight-or-flight response, it is best, as a first step, to drop your anchor. Rather than being blown out to sea, dropping an anchor means bringing some safety and stability to the body as a way to help calm the nervous system. When our nervous system is more regulated, we can think and see with greater clarity and perspective.

When the glass shattered, after I assessed there were no actual emergencies, I sat (or more, sank) in a glass-free corner and started steadying my breathing. I allowed my breath to come in naturally and deeply, and I slowed down my exhalations to make them longer than my inhalations. This sends calming messages to the nervous system. Other ways of “dropping your anchor” might include: bringing awareness to the feeling of the ground underneath your feet or the support underneath your body if you are seated or lying down; intentionally bringing awareness to and softening muscle tension; or bringing awareness to any or all the five senses as experienced through the body. Mindful attention to inner body signals can provide cues of safety to the nervous system and help invite in some more regulating energy.

2. Remember that you can still navigate the ship (even though you can’t stop the storm). Ask yourself, “What can I choose in this moment? Where can I rest my attention ?" (even if I have to keep redirecting it again and again). Remind yourself that while you can’t always change or control the external circumstances, you can choose your internal mindset and focus.

In the middle of the night, when my mind is racing, I remind myself that I can navigate my attention to thoughts, images and sensations that are soothing and comforting rather than let my mind run completely away with worried thoughts (this is a continual practice and sometimes is more difficult to do than other times). With the glass situation, I chose to make the vacuuming a meditative experience, bringing my attention to the back-and-forth rhythm and motion as I systematically covered one piece of carpet at a time. Rather than focusing on the daunting task ahead of me, I tried to focus on what was right in front of me.

3. Keep the beacon in view (and set your compass in the direction you want to go). The beacon (like a beacon of light guiding ships to safe harbor) is a metaphor I use for connecting with one’s deepest values and intentions. When we can focus on what really matters to us, what we most care about (even in the midst of our challenges) this helps us to make choices that are more aligned with these values and choose behaviors that serve our long-term well-being.

During the glass incident, the beacon I tried to hold in view was wanting to be supportive for my husband and not have my negativity and frustration make him feel worse than he already felt (even though the situation was not his fault but a defect in the glass). I wanted to find the best version of myself to manage this minor calamity (rather than letting it bring out the worst in me). I was at least somewhat successful at this, thanks to keeping the beacon in view.

The daily and unexpected storms of life will surely throw us off course, but when they do, it is helpful to know there are some tools that can help us navigate with a little more ease. Remembering to drop your anchor, stand at the helm of your ship, and keep the beacon in sight can help you find your way back to safe and stable waters.

Overcoming Storms in Life

We often face storms throughout the journey of our lives here on earth. Whether you are a Christian or not, each and every single person will face a storm in their life.

It is a time of crisis and is often something that is outside our control. When we look into the Word of God we can quickly see that it is full of characters facing storms and overcoming them.

There are many different types of storms that we encounter:

1 THERE ARE NORMAL STORMS (Matthew 5:5)

Matthew 5,5 says “that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.”

These are the storms that we face because we live in a world that has storms as a natural part of life. These are the storms that we can usually handle in our own strength and can get through them, accepting it as a natural part of life.

2 THERE ARE STORMS THAT WE ENGINEER (Jonah 1:1-4)

Jonah 1,1 – 4 “1 The word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai: 2 “Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.” 3 But Jonah ran away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the Lord. 4 Then the Lord sent a great wind on the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship threatened to break up.”

From the above passage we see that God had a calling on Jonah and he was chosen by God because He had a plan and a purpose for his life. Not only did God have a calling on His life, but the Lord wanted to also save the people of Nineveh. God’s love for both was great.

The Lord could have very easily just picked up another person to do the job of taking the message to the people of Nineveh, but instead He did not give up on Jonah because of His unchanging love love towards them, He wanted to win them back to Himself.

3 THERE ARE STORMS THAT THE LORD SENDS US FOR GROWTH (Matthew 14:22-33)

Matthew 14,22-23 “22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone, 24 and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it. 25 Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear. 27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” 28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” 29 “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” 31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?” 32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.

Here we see Jesus sending His disciples away, and they went right into a storm. Notice that they entered the storm soon after they left Jesus, later that night. While the disciples were in the storm, Jesus was praying. This was  a test of their faith.

These events are taking place, just after they saw Jesus feeding the 5000 with 5 loaves of bread and two fish. By now their trust in Jesus should have been solid, but as soon as they entered the storm, they trusted in their own strength.

Jesus in the meantime did not turn up straight away to rescue them from the storm, but waited until dawn (the fourth watch around 3.00am) in order to save them. God does everything in His perfect timing. Likewise we too might be going through a storm, maybe for some time now but be assured that Jesus himself is interceding on our behalf and will deliver is at the right moment. The storm will help us grow to completely trust in Him and Him alone, and not in our own strength.

4 THERE ARE STORMS THAT WE ARE DRAGGED INTO BY OTHER PEOPLE (Acts 27:10-14)

Acts 27,10-14: “Men, I can see that our voyage is going to be disastrous and bring great loss to ship and cargo, and to our own lives also.” 11 But the centurion, instead of listening to what Paul said, followed the advice of the pilot and of the owner of the ship. 12 Since the harbor was unsuitable to winter in, the majority decided that we should sail on, hoping to reach Phoenix and winter there. This was a harbor in Crete, facing both southwest and northwest. 13 When a gentle south wind began to blow, they saw their opportunity; so they weighed anchor and sailed along the shore of Crete. 14 Before very long, a wind of hurricane force, called the Northeaster, swept down from the island.

The sailors on Paul’s ship made their decision according to their own wisdom and knowledge. We need to fully rely on the Lord before we can make a decision on anything. We must always seek Godly counsel and allow the Holy Spirit to guide us in our decisions. God brought them through this storm and we can see that Paul in v25 says “ So keep up your courage, men, for I have faith in God that it will happen just as he told me. 26  Nevertheless, we must run aground on some island.”

Our faith must be strong in the Lord no matter how we got into the storm or no. If we are in it, be assured that the Lord is always by your side.

So, in such situations what does the Word of God tell us that we can do and what Jesus Christ has done in order to for us to overcome the storms of life?

1 – Understanding that we are destined to overcome:

Psalm 73:24 “You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory”

Jeremiah 29:11 “   For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord , “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. “

  • God has a glorious destiny for each person
  • Your current or past circumstance does not alter the fact that He has a plan for your life
  • God gave you the right personality, talent, gift, passions, and designed you the way you are, with His purpose in mind and your destiny in mind
  • God has a destiny for everyone, not just a select few. It is God’s desire for us to walk in it and that is why we are destined to overcome
  • No storm can rob you of God’s destiny for your life
  • God will use the storms in order to change us and redirect us. Sometimes we feel that we are being blown off course but in fact God is using the storm in order to put us on the right path
  • Whatever you give to Jesus, he resurrects. Give Him all the pieces of your storm battered life and He will breathe new life into it. The storms may be strong but God is stronger.
  • Always remember that you are destined to overcome

2 – Jesus came so that we could overcome:

John 16:33 “ 33  “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” “ -Jesus overcame in order to bring victory into our storms

Matthew 16:18 “ 18  And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.” – No storm can destroy the work of the Lord. You are part of His work. Be a rock in the middle of your storm

Hebrews 2:14 “ 14  Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— “ -Jesus has already defeated the storms in our life, so let us claim the victory and allow the Lord to lead you through the storm.

  • Jesus conquered our 3 enemies in this world: Sin, Satan and Death. These cause a lot of storms in our lives, but Jesus conquered them all by His Death, Burial and Resurrection
  • Sin no longer has power to control you, the power of sin is broken for those in the Lord
  • Satan no longer has any authority over us
  • Death no longer has any fear or dread on us
  • All the sources of storms are defeated by Jesus Christ, but that does not mean that there will be no storms in our lives, but the guarantee is that we can overcome any storm.
  • Why, because Jesus overcame them
  • In John 16:33 Jesus did promise storms, but He said take heart, I have overcome the world
  • STAY CONNECTED TO JESUS through the storm and you will overcome
  • Build your foundation on Jesus and you will overcame any storm

3 We’ve been forgiven so we can overcome:

1 Corinthians 6:9-11 “ 9  Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men 10  nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11  And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. “

Psalm 32:5 “Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord.” And you forgave the guilt of my sin.”

  • Jesus has already set us free from the past. Our identity is no longer connected to our past life, mistakes or storms. Now our identity is connected to what Jesus Christ has done for us. You are now washed, set apart and made right.
  • How can you overcome if you tag you are still dragging your past with you, it will be heavy and bring you down. You must live in the present, with the forgiveness that the Lord has provided.
  • You must stop thinking of yourself as a loser, a reject, you are no good, somethings wrong with me, unlovable, unforgivable etc….
  • You are now in Christ, which means that you are God’s child, member of Christ’s body, a saint, complete in Christ, citizen of heaven, salt of the earth, God’s workmanship, Forgiven.

4 We are empowered to overcome:

2 Corinthians 4:7-9 “ 7  But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. 8  We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; 9  persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. “

Acts 1:8 “ 8  But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

  • God places His power inside of us so that we can overcome – The Holy Spirit
  • God does not expect us to face the storms on our own and with our own strength, but He places His Holy Spirit in us, His supernatural power in us
  • God’s power in us is a witness to the world. 2 Cor 4:7 says that it is “to show that all-surpassing power is from God”, and that when you overcome the storm, the world will know that it is of God
  • Many of you may already have many testimonies of how the Lord helped you overcome your storms
  • Build your relationship with the Lord and have fellowship with the Holy Spirit, when you get closer to God, He will come closer to you. When you totally rely on Him, he takes over and on His command the storms will cease

5 We all have a choice to overcome

Deuteronomy 30:19-20 “ 19  This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live 20  and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the Lord is your life, and he will give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. ” – Its your choice to allow Christ to take over, or keep battling in your own strength

John 5:40 “ yet you refuse to come to me to have life. ” – You know about Him but do you go to Him and know Him personally?

  • Overcoming is a choice, not chance. Our life is not about chance, luck, fate or good fortune, but everything happens with a plan and purpose.
  • We have 2 choice, either that we can overcome the storms in our OWN strength and wisdom, OR we can humble ourselves before God and allow Him to take over the situation. Choosing God is choosing life.
  • If you are tired of your life and your situation, give it to Jesus and He will give you a brand new life. Overcoming storms will then become a reality. Jesus came to give us life, abundantly.
  • Put God first in all areas of your life and you will see Him work mightily. Matthew 5:33 says “ But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

But now, O Jacob, listen to the Lord who created you. O Israel, the one who formed you says,“Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you. I have called you by name; you are mine. When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you. – Isaiah 43:1-2 (NLT)

There comes a time in life when we face the storms of life. Whether you are a believer or not, there will come a time when you will go through storms that will leave you stronger or broken. You need to know how to overcome the storms of life even before they happen. 

Now, it could be that you are going through a storm right now, and you are on the verge of giving up. You may be wondering whether this is happening because you did something wrong. While sin opens up doors for some storms, please know that not all storms come because you did something wrong. Every child of God faces storms at some point.

Before we go into detail about overcoming the storms of life, let us look at what it means to be in a storm. 

What are the Storms of life?

These are challenges or situations that we go through from time to time. The storms of lives are difficult things and times we face in our walk with the Lord. Storms come in the form of sickness, financial hardships, family problems, and so on. 

There is one thing that we need to understand about the storms of life, and that is, it is not God who brings these things in our lives. The enemy is the one who attacks us with sickness and other kinds of storms. 

Dramatic Cloudscape - Dark and Light

God is the creator of everything , nothing catches Him by surprise. So He allows storms to come in our lives. Yes, God is well able to stop the enemy from the onset. But He will allow us to go through the storm most of the time so that we can become Christ-like.  (John 16:33)

It could be that you are asking God to remove the storm in your life when He wants to walk with you through it. If you have been doing this, please go back to God and ask Him to show you His will concerning the storm you are going through. If He wants you to go through it and come out on the other side, ask Him to strengthen you so that you can come out victorious . 

I know that is the last thing you want to hear. But remember, God always uses what the enemy intended for harm to lift us up and glorify His name. Instead of complaining and asking God to take it away, ask Him to glorify Himself through you. 

Okay, you are probably wondering, if God is able to stop the enemy from harming us, if He loves us and wants the best for us, then why does Hse allow us to go through all this? 

Why God allows Storms in our Lives ?

1. god cannot break his laws.

There are laws that God set in place. These laws govern His influence on earth. God created the earth and gave man authority so that through him, He, God, can rule the earth. Yes, there’ll come a time when God will live with us on the new earth. But for now, He has given the earth to man.  (Psalm 116:15) 

How is this related to the storms that we face in life, you may ask.

Well, man was given dominion over the earth. Unfortunately, the enemy lied to Eve, and man ended up losing the dominion He was given to the devil. So the authority we were given by God was transferred to the enemy, the god of this world. 

Though God sent His only son to die for us, the world is still under the control of the enemy, and that is why we go through the storms of life. See, God doesn’t like to see us suffer, but because we live in a fallen world, we are going to face storms from time to time. 

2. To Strengthen Us

Another reason why we face storms is that God wants to strengthen us. As we have already seen, we live in a fallen world that is under the control of the enemy. The storms that we go through as children of God are meant to strengthen us so that we can withstand the attacks of the enemy.

See, even though Jesus was fully God, He was subject to the things of this world. He endured all the challenges and storms that He faced. We need to be like Jesus. We should not run away from storms; instead, we should allow God to strengthen us so that we can become like His son Jesus and win against all the plans of the enemy over our lives.  (Hebrews 12:2)

3. To Reveal God’s Will

Let’s be honest sometimes, we get so caught up with life that we fail to hear the voice of God and know His will over our lives. Many of us are always distracted by the things of this world when life is great. But when storms come, we turn back to God and become faithful in our walk. 

While this is not the way our Father would like us to relate with Him, there are those times that He will allow storms to come so that He can draw our attention to Him and cause us to listen so that we can know His will for our lives. 

Jonah allowed His feelings and thoughts about the people of Nineveh to overshadow God’s will for them. When he tried to run away, God brought a storm that eventually caused him to repent and carry out the assignment God gave him  (Jonah 1:1-17) . Could it be that you’ve been running away from God’s will all these years or months, and now God has allowed this storm to come so that he can draw your attention?

Please take the time to examine yourself and then turn to God and allow Him to reveal His will to you so that you can start walking in it. Look, God has our best interests at heart. It may not seem like that right now, but with time you will understand why He wants that thing to happen in your life.  (Jeremiah 29:11)

4. To Help Us Experience God in a New Way

At times we get accustomed to a certain way of reading the word and praying that our spiritual lives end up being stale. It could be that God wants you to draw closer to Him than you already are. God may allow a storm to come so that you can draw near to Him and experience Him in a new way. 

Instead of running away from God, run to God. When you draw near to Him, He will also draw near to you, and you will experience the Lord in a new way. Christianity is not easy, but when you walk with God, you will enjoy the journey and become a great person that God wants you to be. 

God is a loving and caring Father. He wants to be close to all His children. Sadly, most of us are not giving Him a chance. If you’re going through a storm today, consider getting closer to God than you already are. The more Moses knew God, the closer he wanted to be with Him. That is why Moses asked God to reveal His glory to him. Like Moses, we should have that desire to know God in a new and deeper way.  (Exodus 33:18-20)

5. To Equip us for Service

The enemy is never happy when he sees the children of God advancing the kingdom. He wants you to remain in the same state and rotate around the same mountain, just like the children of Israel. So when he sees you committing to the things of God, he unleashes all kinds of attacks to distract and discourage you from fulfilling your purpose. 

Don’t let fear and discouragement cloud your mind. Know that God will equip you to accomplish His purposes in this world. Through this storm, God is going to equip you for service. 

The truth is you are going to face different challenges when you start that ministry God is preparing you for. It doesn’t matter whether it is big or small, there are going to be some hard seasons that you WILL pass through. God is allowing this storm over your life so that He can strengthen you for what is ahead. When you face challenges in your ministry, you will remember how the Lord strengthened you and made you courageous and victorious in this storm. 

Dealing with the Storms of Life

How you handle a storm will determine whether you come out victoriously or defeated. But you don’t have to rely on your wisdom and strength. God will give you endurance so that you can be able to stand firm and fight. You only need to trust Him and lean not on your own understanding.  (Proverbs 3:5)

It is important that you win this storm because Jesus has already gone ahead of you and made it to the finish line. And secondly, you need to come out victoriously so that you can enjoy the great things God has planned for you. So,

How Should You Deal with the Storm that You’re in Right Now?

Trust and Peace - Man with Closed Eyes

1. Let the Peace of God Rule Your Heart

The enemy will try his level best to steal peace from your heart. He will bring things that will cause you to fear and become anxious. Now it is hard to have peace and anxiety at the same time.  

The Bible says you should not let your heart be troubled, don’t let it be afraid  (John 14:27) . If you keep focusing on what the enemy is doing, then you will become troubled in your heart, and the peace of God will be replaced with anxiety. During this challenging time, ask God to fill you with His peace so that it can guard your heart against all that the enemy is trying to do.

2. Stand Firm In the Word 

Storms are not meant to make us run away from God but to Him. Yes, it is hard to understand why God is quiet but do not turn away from Him. Use this time to get into His word so that you can know what it says about Him. God is always talking to us, and one of the ways is through His word. So read the word, stand firm in it, and allow it to penetrate your heart and remove all fear and doubt. 

3. Pray without Ceasing

The truth is it is difficult to pray when you are facing challenges. Sometimes you may fail to find the words to say. But know this that tears are prayers too, and God stores them in His bottle  (Psalms 56:8) . Spend time in God’s presence and pour your heart out. He will listen to your cry and come through for you. 

Another way you can pray in this season when you don’t have anything to say is listen and sing praise music. Praise defeats the enemy faster than anything. When you praise God in the storm, it means that you are magnifying Him over that situation that you are facing right now. 

Final Thoughts

All of us go through the storms of life. But for children of God, we need not let our hearts be troubled or afraid because God is with us and fighting on our behalf. Know that you are not the only one going through a storm right now. Don’t run away from God, instead run to Him and ask Him to strengthen you so that you can endure to the end and overcome the storms of life.

Don’t let fear replace your faith. Trust God, and don’t lean on your own understanding. Even when He seems quiet and feels distant, know that He is there with you fighting your battles. Pray without ceasing and stand firm in the word. 

Prayer – Overcoming the Storms of Life

Father God, thank You for everything that You are doing in my life. I thank You for the times and seasons that I am in. Lord, though I am going through a very difficult time right now, you remain to be faithful and King in my life. Heavenly Father, I know that this storm will come to pass because You can never give me more than I can handle. 

Dear God, I ask you to be my strength during this storm, for I can’t fight this alone. Uphold me with your righteous right hand and command your angels to take charge over me. God, when I am on the verge of giving up, remind me that you are fighting the battle on my behalf. When I am about to throw in the towel, remind me of what Jesus did on the cross so that I can be strengthened in my inner being.  

Holy Spirit of God, quicken me with the word of God so that I can be able to stand firm and fight back. Lord, use this storm to heal, change, and refine me. May You glorify Yourself through me and cause me to prosper in this. In Jesus’ Name, I believe and pray, Amen.

Why Does God Allow Storms in Our Life?

No one likes turbulent times, but until we reach heaven, they will be a part of our life. The underlying foundation for understanding the storms we encounter is found in Psalm 103:19. No matter what the apparent source is, God ultimately directs every situation, because His sovereignty rules over all.

He uses storms to …

Bring us to repentance. Sometimes we create chaotic conditions with our own sinful choices. Yet like Jonah, we’ll discover that the Lord is always with us—even in our disobedience—drawing us back to Himself.

Grow us spiritually. Trials force us to rely on God’s strength rather than our own. We learn to endure, persevere, and submit to the Father so He can make us more like Christ.

Reveal Himself to us. Turbulent times give us a more accurate perspective of God and the way He works. Sometimes this understanding comes when we look back on a storm and see how He brought us through. Then we realize His strength was sufficient and His purpose was good.

Take comfort in knowing that God controls your storms, and His mighty power and unfailing love govern whatever comes your way.

Tens of millions of people who live on the East Coast spent the weekend preparing for the arrival of Hurricane Sandy. Were you and your family among them? If so, how did you get ready for the storm?

In “East Coast Prepares for Storm’s Arrival,” Michael Schwirtz describes the efforts to be as ready as possible for Hurricane Sandy:

Governors across the region have declared emergencies, and federal officials have issued urgent warnings for people to prepare. From Plymouth, Me., to Cape Hatteras, N.C., residents boarded up windows; stocked up on water, batteries and food; and prepared to hunker down. Airlines encouraged people with flights scheduled in the next few days to change their plans and waived cancellation fees. Though airports remained open, major airlines including Delta, United and American, announced that flights would be canceled. American Airlines said it canceled 140 flights on Sunday and would cancel an additional 1,431 flights from Monday through Wednesday. Amtrak has also shut down train service to parts of the East Coast, including between Washington and New York. At supply stores across the region, generators and other goods were snapped up in preparation for the possibility of extended power failures. Tens of thousands of people who live on the state’s densely populated barrier islands — from Sandy Hook to Cape May — were evacuating on Sunday in compliance with an order issued by Gov. Chris Christie. The evacuation included the 40,000 residents of Atlantic City, where the casinos closed at 3 p.m. on Sunday. All New Jersey Transit service, including buses and rail and light rail lines, were to be suspended starting at 4 p.m.

Sandy’s winds is affecting Georgia severely. The weather is switching from cold to hot fronts. Im not sure how to dress for the weather because of the unexpected changes.

I live in Georgia, the only thing we have experienced from hurricane Sandy so far, is severe winds and cooler weather. The weather has been effected mostly,by temperature change.

I live in Georgia, our weather has been effected just by the rapid weather change from cold, windy mornings to hot, sunny afternoons and from hot to cold in the night.

This is the first time I have ever prepared for a severe weather event. Last year when the East coast was expecting Irene I didn’t think very much of it. Irene wasn’t even supposed to hit New Jersey as hard as Sandy. Sure, my mom did go to the supermarkets and buy bottles of water, but I wasn’t concerned. For hurricane Sandy, I really don’t know what to expect. If schools were closing all over the East coast, and New York transportation was shut down, Sandy must be colossal.

My family and I have done plenty to prepare for the hurricane. My mom got water and bought non perishable foods. She also got out the flashlights and extra batteries. I think we are going to fill up our bathtubs with water, so we can flush our toilets if we lose our water. I brought in the furniture from outside and put it in the garage, so they wouldn’t go flying. We don’t really know what Sandy is bringing our way.

I was feeling a little scared and excited at the same time when I saw where the storm was headed. When I saw that Sandy was headed towards central New Jersey, I was afraid because that’s where I live. However, I was excited because this was the first major storm I was in the middle of. I feel the same now, fearful and thrilled, because school was canceled, but it is looking very bad outside. Obama is saying we should take Sandy a little more serious and I think I need to.

I have experienced similar storms in the past. I experienced hurricane Irene. For our family, hurricane Irene wasn’t that bad, but we did have flooding in our basement. Our town had flooding and some roads were closed for a while, along with fallen trees and power lines. Having said that, I don’t know how bad Sandy will be this time.

When we had hurricane Irene before, we had flooding in our basement. When you went down there and walked into a particular corner, the water would ooze out of the carpet. Since there was nonstop rain, we had to find a way to soak up the water. My dad actually has a huge collection of newspapers that he saved. My mom wanted to get rid of the newspapers and she came up with a great idea. My mom and I, little by little, took the newspapers and laid them down where there was flooding. After forty-five minutes, we had to go down to the basement and replace the newspapers until the rain stopped.

Right before I came to US, it was a arrival of hurricane in my city, and it was really high signal warning number. What we have done was stay at home. Tape the big tapes to the windows, just case it doesn’t fall if it breaks. I did walk in the street after the warning number decreases a little bit. I felt the wind was moving me and even the trees around are almost dropped. I think school closed is a good idea because it is pretty dangerous to the students on their ways to go to school or home, but I don’t recommend people hang around during this bad weather. It makes accident happen easily.

I was living in Brooklyn last time when Hurricane Irene came. Actually, I not afraid Hurricane, in opposite, I so exciting, because we had a stimulate time. In New York City, bus and subway was close already. That’s a good choice for avoid accident, and the Government settle down a lot for homeless people. I think Government did a good job in this time. When Hurricane coming, the best idea is stay at home. In a general way, save some water and food indispensable. I hope everybody be safe in this time Hurricane.

I do live on the east coast of the United States, and this is my first time preparing for a weather event. Same things me and my roommate have done already was food shopping bought flash light and put cardboard boxers around the windows just in case the wind picks up and blows out the windows . At first I was feeling kind of scared but then I got over it and said to myself this will be over before you know it. No I have not experienced anything like this storm or any other weather event like hurricane sandy. I don’t have any stories about experiencing and recovering from a significant weather event like a hurricane.

Last year Hurricane Irene and a tornado came through my town. In my home we lost our power. The whole building was lite by candles and flashlights. We kept all the kids on the first floor between two apartments. Grateful that my stove was gas I was able to cook for everyone. There wasn’t any water damage done to our building. Although a lot of our phones were out and took two to three day for them to be restored. This is now my third sever weather event. To get ready for Hurricane Sandy I’ve put new batteries in my flashlights and got my candles out. Medications are all in one spot, and also making sure that my phone is fully charged. As I looked up the news I was scared for my daughter to go to school. Her school is off a major road right next to the river. I now am still a little nerves knowing that I do live by the river and i could experience water damage or have to leave my home.

This will not be the first time for me in being prepared for a sever thunderstorm. Yet, we’ve always have items that we would need in case of a storm. In case the storm becomes more violent, my family and i have stocked up on firewood, to keep warm in case the power likes to go out on us. We Also, Stocked up on warm clothing and stocked up on food and water in case the roads are destroyed by the washouts from the rain. As i watch the weather warnings on the oncoming storm, and seeing the clouds turning darker be the minute, I feel like that there’s gonna be a massive corruption as I’ll be driving home in this storm. In addition to all the land that would be washed out, over the roads, homes destroyed, and lose of power. What i feel now is that the sooner the storm is over the better i would feel. Yet I have experienced violent storms that haven’t hit where i live; I’ve dealt with storms a few years ago by my old high school where I’ve seen many faces upside down because of the lose of homes friends and family. My personal experience of storms i would not like to talk about, However, the result of recovering from a hurricane, is very hard to forget about. But when you help others in need. Seeing the smiles they give back makes you forget the troubles that you feel after the storm has passed.

I live in New York city, our weather is usually affected by change in temperature. However, when I think of a time in which I’ve experienced severe weather, I find myself on the date of August 27, 2011. Me and my parents watched the news together, listening to mayor Bloomberg speak. The mayor, as well federal officials urged strong warnings to prepare for hurricaine Irene. I felt frightened and small and intimidated. I knew to expect the unexpected. My parents strongly felt that it was important to be well prepared. Therefore we drove to food places and supply stores. We stocked up on supplies for extended possibilities in power failures. When we boarded our windows, I felt a sense of more security. I was less scared, being assured that I was at least prepared for what was to come of hurricaine Irene.

Luckly my place was ok last year, however some people lost their place. I felt so bad for them because that was not the first time, and I clearly remember how much I was terrified of wild and a siren at that time. I learned about preparing such as food , flash lamp and clean water also safety place in my place. On the Sep 9th 2012 ,I was on the plan When the plan almost get to the JFK airport ,There was concerned about storms .so we had to lay over in hong – kong for 9 hours. I landed at midnight in the JFK airport. I had a fear and I had missed the train for Albany. It was hard for me ,I felt worn out with long flight and I had no Idea where should I stay until The cap driver take me to the motel. When I watched the news and tracked the storm’s path today, It made me think how weak I am. In addition, the news makes me pray for others, Hope everybody is ok.

This is the first time I have prepared for a storm,so needless to say this was quite the experience for me. My family and I went out to grocery,and other outlets to get what we needed.We purchased lots of water,perishables,and other necessities like batteries,candles, and fuel for our generator.When I first watched the news tracking the storm I really didn’t think that it would be this bad, but now that I’ve seen more of what going on ,and the alerts I’m a little bit more nervous about whats going to happen. In the past I have experienced others storms,however the most recent storm was hurricane Irene last year. My family and i were hit pretty bad with the flood. Our family business sits across from the river,so when the flood came we watched all the equipment,and saw all the damage it caused. As a result we had to go into our savings to get back all we lost. It was a devastating feeling,but we overcame it.

I actually remember one year this horrible hurricane came and the power was out for about a week and school was cancelled. It was the worst hurricane i experienced so far. Schools were cancelled and the power was out and everyone spent more time outside because it was just way too hot to be inside. Lots of people had water coming in through the windows and the water would leak through the roof. Eventually things started to get better and people were able to move on from the experience.

Everytime i turn on the news, the feeling that swoops over me is plain fear. Either it being fear of a national threat, such as the Taliban menacing the United States or something more local yet more disasastrous sch as a natural disaster. Currently, Hurricane Sandy has not only induced fear over me but over everybody in the East Coast because it has been predicted that Hurricane Sandy will create a disastrous aftermath.

I live in New Jersey, so yes, i am directly impacted by the storm. It’s not he first time I’ve had to prepare for a storm like this, because of last years’ hurricane irene. Irene was the first hurricane/storm I’ve ever been through and it was an important event, because it affected so many people, some more than others, and it’s terrible to see so many others left with almost nothing and i feel grateful to have what i need. Luckily, my family and friends were fine, but there were still many preparations that had to be made, just like this year. This year, we are making sure our windows won’t leak (which we learned the hard way last time) and have all supplies necessary in case there is a shortage of food, power, etc. hurricane sandy has caused all the schools in my district to close form monday to tuesday, but we still all have to be careful. As always, many supermarket shelves are empty and all shops have closed, leaving what is probably all of New Jersey indoors for at least 3-4 or more days, especially since sandy is passing by much more slowly than Irene did. The news is always on in my house, so I”m always informed with the latest reports on the conditions around us, what’s to expect and how to prepare. I’m glad to still have electricity, but it could go any moment, so i make sure everything is charged and ready, just in case. It’s always good to take advantage of what we have and use it well.

Since I live on the east coast I am not new to hurricanes. My family and I have prepared for hurricanes before hurricane Sandy. To get ready for hurricane Sandy my family and I went to the local drug store to get water and batteries . The batteries are used for keeping the flashlights running. When I was watching the news. When I was watching the news tracking Sandy I was a bit uneasy. I was wondering what might happen if we did not have electricity for long periods of time. Right now I am not to worried because now we have batteries, so if the power goes out then we can use flashlights. I have had storms like this in my area before. For example Hurricane Irene hit my town last summer. When large hurricanes rip through my town, such as Sandy I get nervous. Mainly because I hope nothing gets destroyed. After a hurricane everything goes back to normal. Unless I have to go find a garbage can that flew away.

This is my first time preparing for a severe weather event, like Hurricane Sandy. We have only gotten one other Hurricane since I have lived in New Jersey , and that was Hurricane Irene last summer. I didn’t actually think too much of Hurricane Irene since it was summer and I wasn’t watching the weather channel to much and no one really seemed to worry about Irene in my house. But Hurricane Sandy is so much different. My family watches the weather channel 24/7 now and we keep our selves informed of what’s coming our way. In addition to watching the weather channel, over the weekend my family went out and purchased items. We purchased non-perishable food, packs of water bottles, flashlights, and batteries.

Watching Hurricane Sandy’s path on the news worried me but also excited me. I was scared because I had never experienced a storm so severe before and I didn’t know what would happen. However I was also excited because my school district called school off for two days.

I have experienced severe weather events in the past (not as great and extreme as Sandy). When I was in third grade, one day New Jersey experienced heavy rain and severe thunderstorms. I remember it because I remember how the thunder had been louder than usual thunder and I also remember my choir concert being canceled because of it. Also one time in 2004 when I was returning from my trip from India there was a severe snowstorm. I remember having to sit in the airplane and circle the sky for an hour waiting for it to stop and then they had to clean the snow so that the plane could land safely.

Since I don’t live near a river and I don’t have a basement in my house I don’t really have any personal stories about recovering from a weather event like Hurricanes. However during the Severe Snow Storm I remember having to help shovel out the inches of snow that had piled near my door and on my car. I also remember when we had severe thunderstorms and rain a tree near my neighbor’s house had knocked over. We had all helped move it and later called the association to move it.

Here comes Sandy and yes,this is the first time that my family and I, have ever prepared for a severe weather event. We have been stocking up on goods and necessities like torches,batteries,water and food,mostly canned,to be prepared for possible power outages that we are told might last a week. As we went shopping, I saw panic shopping for the first time in my life. People were rushing around,wildly dashing through the rows of canned food and dumping whatever they could lay their hands on. It was surprising to see many shelves in shops like Walmart being empty. There were huge queues at the billing counters and large lines of cars with people rushing home. As the television channels and the newspapers were blaring out warning of the impending disaster, we did not panic initially, as many of these minor storms and hurricanes were known to pass through this area. But when we realized that it was going to cause some serious damage,we were scared,as this was our first experience with mother nature’s rage in this part of the world. But now,when we are in the middle of the storm, we are glad that our area has not been hit as badly as some of the unfortunate regions that have suffered great damage. Back in India, we only faced some heavy rains and cold winds, but nothing this severe. This certainly was a superstorm. We spent our time watching movies and we had no clue as to when the storm arrived and when it passed away. Now looking out the window I realize that in few hours time,it should be gone from here. This storm was very powerful,but very quick. This storm taught me how to be prepared for adversities. The sight of an uprooted tree in front of my house is devastating. This shows how vulnerable we humans are if we are not protected. Well ,I have something to say to Sandy “ Goodbye Sandy, Don’t come back”.

I live on the east coast and this has been the first time my family has prepared for a severe weather event. Last year, when Irene hit, we were not in the vicinity, so we didn’t have to worry about that hurricane.

To prepare for Hurricane Sandy, we went out to buy 3 crates of packaged water. We bought a couple of loaves of bread, some cartons of milk and eggs. We both many packs of batteries, bought a lamp that ran on solar power and made sure we knew where all our flashlights were. We also cleaned up the garage so we could park both our cars inside. We charged all our phones and iPads ahead of time. Finally, we filled up our bathtub with water so that if we lost power, we could still use the bathroom.

Throughout Sunday and Monday evening, as we were watching the news, I felt a little anxious, looking at all the live footage of the flooding, especially in the NYC Subways. I also felt excited though, because I had never been through a storm like this and it felt kind of exciting. After the storm passed though, I feel annoyed that Sandy had to cause so much damage because many people around our district lost power, and wont be getting it back until Monday, so school will be cancelled. Although it was nice not to go to school for a couple of days, it is also dreadfully boring, especially since you can’t go out anywhere. I also feel annoyed that we won’t be allowed to go out to trick-or-treat this year.

I have never been through another hurricane, but i have been through two heavy snowstorms in the past, sometime around the 2004-2005 timeframe.

When the two heavy snow storms hit, I remember school being cancelled for a very long time. I lived in an apartment then, so we didn’t have to shovel the snow. The day it finally stopped snowing, and paths were shoveled through the snow, my family went out to the nearest grocery store to buy food and other necessities. I’ve never had to recover from a hurricane though.

I live on the east coast (this is post-sandy) and this is not the first time i have prepared for a severe storm. Last years Irene was also a severe storm. For the arrival of Sandy, me and my family have bought bottled water, flashlights, canned food, and batteries. We brought all of the outdoor furniture inside and made sure none of the windows had any leakages, because last year, one of the windows was cracked and there was rainwater seeping in. When i was watching the news, i did not feel afraid at all. Last year, when Irene struck, i was scared, becaus i heard that there would be major flooding. that was not my first hurricane, but it was the first severe hurricane i had been in. we had prepared alot for irene and nothing much happened. i was surprised when my neighbors trampoline did not blow away when irene was there. but this year was different. their trampoline did blow away and my dad was afraid it would crash into my house and break the windows. luckily, the trampoline got stuck in some evergreens, that later fell, and got bent out of shape. aslo, i read another article that said that people think that sandy will not b that bad. thats what i thought, since last year we lost power for only a few hours and it came back before it got dark again. but this time, we have no power and there is no internet connection. (im in the public library with the rest of the world trying to get internet connection). its awful and our power supposed to come back in 4 more days and we havent had power for the last 3 days. but there is no flodding, so thats good. The last severe strom was Irene, which i did not think was that bad except for the rivers flooding. Last year, there wasnt anything to recover from, but this year, there are a few fallen trees in my yard that i have to get rid of, but nothing severe except for the fact that there is no power in my neighborhood.

I live where just floods and torandoes. Ido not think a flood could get to my houe.So i just have to think about torandoes. Floods are realy dangerous.

Thankfully, living in Utah, I’m not physically affected by Hurricane Sandy; but, I do know people living on the East Coast and my thoughts and prayers go out to all affected by the hurricane. Living in Utah, we do have to deal with the hurricane in our area, but sometimes are hit with a snowstorm here and there, but nothing too severe in my lifetime; I’ve only had one snow day before. Witnessing and tracking Hurricane Sandy and it’s affects makes me anxious and worried for those on the East Coast of our country, and all those connected through family and friends.

I live in Georgia,the only thing I affected from hurricane Sandy was very strong winds and cool weather. I’ve never really been in bad weather the only thing was strong winds. It was in tennesse all the sign were falling down and rain pouring very strong.

I live in the Bronx where the damage wasn’t as bad as other boroughs. I was home most of the time and heard the tress moving from all the wind. I saw the news very often and saw the flooding, fires and damage in other boroughs like Queens. The pictures from the aftermath of the storm are so sad and they changed my view on the seriousness of hurricanes. I would like to help and i look forward to doing so with my school !

I live in New York and Hurricane Sandy affected us with severe Winds and rain most of us went days without electricity and hot water , in addition some of my family members who live in Brooklyn Suffered with a lot of flooding through out their neighborhood, it was very difficult for them to contact anyone and for them to leave their homes to get supplies. Most of us weren’t prepared for hurricane sandy because Irene didn’t really affect us as much.

My life has been a journey full of ups and downs, but overall it has been a fulfilling and meaningful experience.

Routine of My Daily Life

I am a student, and I have always been passionate about learning. My daily routine starts with waking up early in the morning, and I usually wake up at 6 am. I get dressed and have my breakfast, which generally includes cereal or toast with some fruit. After breakfast, I spend some time reviewing my notes and studying for my upcoming exams.

I then head off to school, where I spend most of my day attending classes and participating in various activities. I am involved in several extracurricular activities, such as sports, debate teams and volunteering which keeps me busy and active. After school, I come back home and spend some time doing my homework and finishing any pending assignments.

Overall, my life is filled with a balance of work and play. I am always busy, but I make sure to make time for the things that matter most to me. I believe that life is about making the most of every opportunity and making the most of every moment. I am grateful for the experiences that I have had, and I am excited about the future.

Life is a journey full of ups and downs, opportunities, and challenges. It is unique for everyone and it is something that we all have to experience on our own. As a student, my life is currently focused on school and my future aspirations. Memorable Life Experiences

One of the most important moments in my life was when I received my first acceptance letter from a university. It was a moment of pride and accomplishment, and it made me feel like all of my hard work had finally paid off. This moment inspired me to work even harder and to strive for success in all of my future endeavours.

Another important moment that made me incredibly proud was when I received the first prize in an inter-school science competition. I had been working on my project for months, conducting experiments, analysing data, and perfecting my presentation. The competition was fierce, with students from all over the city presenting their projects.

How I Felt | When my name was called as the winner, I was overwhelmed with emotion. All of my hard work and dedication had paid off, and I was being recognized for my achievements. The audience erupted into applause, and I felt a sense of pride and accomplishment that I will never forget.

Despite these positive moments, there have also been challenges that I have had to face. One of the biggest challenges I have faced is balancing my schoolwork and extracurricular activities. I have also been involved in several volunteer activities, and I have found them to be incredibly rewarding. I have volunteered for various causes, such as helping out at homeless shelters and working with underprivileged children. It has given me a sense of purpose, and it has made me realise the importance of giving back to society.

In order to achieve my goals, I know that I need to continue to work hard and to be proactive. I want to stay focused and determined, and to never give up on my dreams. I also want to continue to learn and grow, and to always be open to new opportunities and experiences.

My life has been a journey that has been full of memorable experiences. I have had my fair share of ups and downs, but I have learned to appreciate and make the most of every moment. I am grateful for the people in my life, and I am excited to see what the future holds.

My Experience of a Storm

Outline: First sign of an impending storm – the fury of the storm – the unfortunate fishermen – the aftermath of the storm.

Monsoons in our country are generally heralded by cyclones or storms. It happened to be a day early in the month of June. There was peculiar stillness in the air; not a leaf stirred, not whiff of wind blew. It looked like calm before the storm. Unmindful of these foreboding signs, my friend and I set out for a long walk along the beach.

We had done about half an hour’s walk, when we noticed far off in the sky a speck of black cloud which became denser and denser, and soon the sky was overcast, rendering the atmosphere gloomy and dismal. Just as we decided to turn back homewards we were greeted by a cool, soft breeze, which within few minutes turned into a strong gale. It blew restlessly harder and harder so that we could hardly stand against it. Hurriedly we took shelter in a solitary but close by.

Hardly had we got into the empty abode when down came the rain with all its fury, accompanied by peals of thunder and flashes of lightning. The thunder-claps were so deafeningly loud and the flashes across so terrifically bright that we were almost frightened to death.

For over an hour we were held up, and during that time the storm raged, causing much havoc. Huge waves rolled on the sea and the hapless fishermen who went out to sea to cast nets were caught in the storm. We watched the unfortunate men clinging to their battered boats as they were tossed up and down the high seas. Brave men they were! They successfully weathered the storm after an hour’s terrible ordeal.

When the storm abated and finally calm set in, one could see the destruction it had caused. Trees were uprooted, roofs were blown off, and lashing angry waves caused a deep breach in the wall that protected the fisher folks’ dwellings, inundating the whole locality.

Never did we witness a more horrible scene than this. We thanked God for our safety and secretly prayed that another dreadful experience like this should not befall us.

‘I’ve waited all my life’: More than 60 years after high school, sweethearts attend prom

BISMARCK, N.D. ( KFYR /Gray News) - A couple in North Dakota finally got the opportunity to attend their senior prom more than 60 years later.

Walt and Rita Steiner started dating when Rita was still in high school, KFYR reported.

The couple didn’t get to go to their high school prom due to unforeseen circumstances.

“I had to leave to go help my dad on the farm because my brother was drafted into the service,” Walt said.

‘I feared for my life’: Dozens displaced after storm rocks West Tallahassee complex

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - DeAngelo Lovett woke up Friday to an emergency alert blaring in the early morning darkness.

The next thing he knew, trees were coming down all around him.

“I was scared,” the Tallahassee man said.

Tallahassee and Leon County residents were rocked by a line of storms Friday that slopped trees and power lines onto homes, cars and roads across Leon County.

As winds blasted the walls of his home Friday morning, Lovett and his fiancee scrambled to corral the kids. One of the areas hit hardest by Friday’s storms was Lovett’s neighborhood, the Mystic Woods Condos complex in West Tallahassee.

“It’s something that I’ve never been through as a young man,” the father said.

Some of Lovett’s neighbors were trapped by debris crashing into their homes during the story, Mystic Woods Property Manager Troy Carver said. So when the property manager arrived at the condos Friday, he jumped in to free the residents.

But they’re not out of the woods.

Carver said that at least 50 people from the complex were forced out of their homes due to the storm damage. After the gusty weather, residents stepped outside to see trees blocking walkways and scattered over roofs. Some units flooded, Carver said.

Debris covered much of the Mystic Woods parking lot Friday afternoon, and fallen tree limbs left dents on cars and mailboxes.

Friday’s storms were far from an ordinary spring shower, Leon County Emergency Management Director Kevin Peters said.

The storm blew down trees and tackled power lines across the entire county, Peters said. Officials sent out crews to clear roads, work on restoring power and tackle the damage as soon as possible Friday. The city of Tallahassee requested mutual aid to expedite recovery efforts, and crews from other parts of the Sunshine State, Alabama, Lousiana, Georgia and South Carolina were dispatched to help, according to the Florida Municipal Electric Association.

With hurricane season just weeks away, Peters emphasized how important it is to prepare in advance for major storms at all times of the year.

“We need to be prepared all year long for disasters. That means having a plan for an emergency,” Peters said.

Peters added that Leon County crews will likely be out most of the weekend to get a full scope of how broad the storms’ impacts are.

Deadly tornadoes again rampage through Tennessee: 'Lord please don’t let me die'

Southbound cars on I-65 stopped on the shoulder in the gray evening light to see a massive, spinning Y in the sky scraping through Columbia.

For about an hour, the terror for Maury County residents was on top of them as a tornado ripped through , leaving a two-mile wide path of destruction. People were trapped. First responders hustled along the Columbia/Spring Hill border.

There were floods and falling trees. Power went out. With morning light, schools closed. The fear of more trauma from rising water remained. A Rutherford County boy was caught in a storm drain and was still in critical condition.

And so many people across Middle Tennessee found themselves thinking the same thing.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Tennessee has endured at least 205 twisters since the start of 2020 (the statistics have not been updated yet in 2024). The memories of deadly storms in March 2020 and December 2023 still seem too fresh.

The damage from the May 8 storms stretched across the state, with two confirmed fatalities and thousands of residents losing power for at least a portion of Wednesday evening.

One person died in Columbia, and another died in Tazewell in East Tennessee after being hit be a falling tree.

Rescues in Maury County

"We have had a long night, but we have an amazing group of people checking in on everyone in our community," Maury County Mayor Sheila Butt said.

Emergency Management Director Jeff Hardy said in addition to downed trees, power lines and structural damage to homes, the storm also caused a fuel tanker to capsize on U.S. Highway 31 north of Burt Drive and south of Carters Creek Pike.

It was a long night for first responders.

'A tragedy in our county': Tornado relief continues in Columbia following storm

"Approximately 12 people were removed from debris, or from wooded areas with the one confirmed fatality," Maury County Fire Deputy Chief Richard Schatz said. "We had resources from several surrounding counties and municipalities all respond and provide search and rescue teams, as well as additional manpower to the area."

The search continued Thursday.

"A request was made through the Tennessee Mutual Aid system and members from surrounding organizations are responding into the area to conduct secondary searches in conjunction with dog teams, as well to search completely collapsed structures that were checked, but we are going to follow it up with a more detailed search throughout the day," Schatz said.

Rep. Scott Cepicky, R-Culleoka, highlighted several entities working together in a time of crisis.

"Tragedy has befallen our county overnight, but I'll tell you this, the volunteer spirit is alive and well in Tennessee," Cepicky said. "The outpouring of support across the state wanting to help our citizens in need right now has been overwhelming. Law enforcement and emergency responders all working together, coming together so quickly to provide help to those who need it the most has just been an impressive thing to watch."

'Asher needs a miracle'

Rutherford County Schools Director James "Jimmy" Sullivan provided new details Thursday about the injuries his 10-year-old son sustained during  Wednesday's storm .

The boy, whom the director identified as Asher in a social media post, was playing with other children in the water that had accumulated in the street while neighbors gathered to begin the cleanup process when somehow, he "got caught in the storm drain and was swept under the neighborhood streets."

"He eventually came out in a drainage ditch, and CPR was administered for quite some time. His heartbeat was reestablished, but the damage is substantial," Sullivan wrote in the post. Asher was taken first to Ascension, and then to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, the post noted.

"His lungs are severely damaged, and he is not showing much brain activity outside of muscle jerks," Sullivan wrote. "Specially, pray for healing for his lungs and most importantly brain activity to occur.

"Asher needs a miracle."

Columbia woman says it was 'scariest moment' of her life

With dust still sticking to her hair, Tammy Johnson, 66, of Columbia was picking up the pieces at her Cothran Road home.

Her residence sits on a lush scenic hill overlooking Bear Creek Pike, the main roadway that leads to Columbia's eastern Interstate 65 extension.

Johnson was upstairs in bed, almost asleep on Wednesday evening, when her bedroom window blew out.

“Things just started flying like the Wizard of Oz,” she said.

When the dust and the debris settled, Johnson and her dog, Max, were unharmed.

“I just said Lord please don’t let me die,” Johnson said. “It was the scariest moment of my life.”

Her memories are strewn along the front lawn and a gaping hole in the second-story of her home shows inside her bedroom.

Let This Breakfast Change Your Life

A simple miso-roasted salmon, part of a traditional Japanese spread, is both sustenance and self-care.

The chef Shota Nakajima goes to bed early and wakes up early. He walks his dog for an hour and a half every day. He doesn’t drink anymore, thriving on a diet of rice with grilled fish and pickles for most of his meals, especially breakfast. Getting to this place in life, a state of peace and equilibrium, was one of the hardest parts of transitioning from his 20s to his 30s, Nakajima says, but he is happier than he has ever been — as he describes it, “You know, just chilling, cranking.”

Talking to him felt like connecting with a happier, more complete version of myself in the not-too-distant future, a light at the end of what has felt, for me, like a long and tumultuous tunnel. Nakajima had figured it out, learned the lessons that come with time and experience. He had finished his Saturn return.

Recipe: Miso Roasted Salmon

An astrological concept, a Saturn return is considered a time of great upheaval — “growing older, burning out at work, increasingly higher bills, a couple of monumental life milestones,” as the astrologer Aliza Kelly has put it. According to NASA, it takes Saturn about 29.4 years to orbit the sun — or for it to return to the same spot in the sky as when you were born, signaling the end of a period of change (if you believe in astrology). As someone who is nearing the end of his return, I’ve never felt more upheaved by the colossal changes I’ve experienced from my late 20s to my early 30s, including but not limited to: new job, new apartment, new boyfriend. New life! One thing I’ve started to do that gets me a little closer to settling into this new beginning — my 30s — is eating Japanese breakfast.

The eclectic spread, called ichiju-sansai (“one soup, three dishes”), is beyond just a savory meal that soothes both soul and stomach lining first thing in the morning. These restorative breakfasts, centered on a single bowl of rice, are meant to be balanced, a careful mix of carb, protein and vegetable: say, with a perfectly steamed pot of medium-grain rice, a sliver of melting fish run through with miso, a fistful of blanched spinach draped in ground sesame seeds , a quivering onsen egg oozing yolk and, when I have the forethought, a teacup of homemade miso soup. An array of pickles pulled from the refrigerator — cucumbers, plums, radishes and whatever is in my house kimchi jar at the time — completes the meal.

Cooking an elaborate breakfast for the people you love most? It’s not just an act of service.

The first time I traveled to Seoul, my family and I landed late at night, jetlagged, and slept on the guest-room floor of my Aunt Young’s apartment complex near Olympic Park. When we awoke the next morning, we stumbled downstairs to a dining table brimming with the most elaborate banchan, stews, fishes and pickles. I remember my aunt’s bap (“rice” or “meal” in Korean) most vividly: It was shiny, fluffy and moist, a texture I try to recreate every time I make rice for myself today. She had also made us kalbi jjim, a long-braised party dish that’s so labor-intensive you eat it only once or twice a year. As a 5-year-old, when I asked Aunt Young if I could spoon some of the rich, coveted sauce onto my rice, she said: “Of course you can. I skimmed the fat off for you.”

What does it mean to cook such an elaborate breakfast for the people you love most? It’s not just an act of service. I’ve learned recently that cooking well for yourself, or for yourself and a partner, is also a means to true happiness, a way to honor your time together by making daily life count. So listen to this: Your Japanese breakfast spread should reflect not necessarily your aspirations but your quotidian preferences, your crisper drawer at the moment, your freezer meats, your kitchen practice. I don’t always roast a fillet or brew a soup; most mornings, I can barely pour myself a cup of coffee. But when I have fish and when I have soup for dinner the night before, you can bet those leftovers will go into my Japanese breakfast.

Growing up in Japan, the chef Yuji Haraguchi remembers finding the previous evening’s meal sprinkled throughout the next morning’s breakfast, a constellation of leftovers dotting an expanse of rice. (He would later dedicate his Brooklyn restaurant Okonomi to Japanese breakfasts.) For Haraguchi’s mother, a working parent, the priority was getting three kids out the door with bellies full and future bellies fuller. That’s why she would spend most of her energy every morning cooking lunch in the form of a bento box, which often included a tamagoyaki . She would make that large folded omelet, slice it up and nestle the tender pieces into her children’s lunchboxes. The ends, which were less uniform and more scrappy-looking, would go to Haraguchi and his two sisters’ breakfasts. As Haraguchi, 43, painted this portrait of his young mother to me, I imagined my own in her early 30s, rushing my brother and me out the door toward the school bus, plastic lunchboxes in hand and sensitive stomachs filled with seaweed and rice.

Japanese people don’t call it Japanese breakfast in the way that French people don’t call it French bread. It’s just breakfast. It’s also more of an attitude, an approach to mindful cooking, than it is a recipe to follow. But should you need a starting place, miso-roasted salmon is a solid anchor for the day. With this fish, less is more: The salty, umami balm of a miso marinade is lightened with lemon zest, which lends floral bittersweetness not unlike that from yuzu. The electric juice brings tang and tenderness. As always, serve it with white rice and miso soup , then finish with a cup of hojicha in your favorite coffee mug.

If the workload overwhelms you, remember that preparing Japanese breakfast is like cooking for future you, not present you. Plant a seed or two, water them if you like, but then live your life.
