Kindergarten teacher learns braille to help visually-impaired student excel in class
by Beth Hunt
RUSSELLVILLE (KATV) — In Pam Pilgram-Smith's kindergarten class at Crawford Elementary, daily lessons go beyond the basics. That's because she has a special student this year...a very smart and outgoing 6-year-old named Towns Fuentez.
Towns was born with microphthalmia and microcornea, which just means his eyes didn't develop all the way. He is legally blind but still goes full force with everything...including recess. Towns says, "I swing, and I do the monkey bars." Mrs. Pilgram-Smith says, "As he's coming down, he said is this what the other kids look like when they do this? I said that's exactly what they look like."
Towns is also developing a love of reading. That's thanks, in part, to his teacher. Towns says, "When it's raining outside, sometimes we come inside in here and we just read books."
Mrs. Pilgram-Smith is a veteran teacher but wasn't sure what to expect this year. She quickly realized that a lot of what she was already doing, lends itself to the visually impaired. She says, "I already had sand trays that he could use to trace the letters. I had bumpy boards that we used with crayons that he could feel the texture on. I felt like there wasn't a whole lot in addition to.. other than learn braille. He needed more support, and I said let me do it."
Mrs. Pilgram-Smith decided to learn braille to teach Towns how to read.
She says, "I take out the balls depending on what letter or word I'm teaching and he can feel it, and that translates to his brailler. There are three on this side and three keys on this side. He will put his finger on two... four.. five... six... and this will make a letter, and in some cases, a word."
His hard work is paying off. Mrs. Pilgram-Smith says, "Oh my goodness! He is excelling like you would not believe."
In fact, on recent state reading exams, Towns scored the highest level possible. Mrs. Pilgram-Smith says, "I was elated. I was swinging him around. So excited!" Towns' mom, Andrea Fuentez, says, "For him to already be reading, you know, cvs words was just remarkable. It was a huge celebration in our home."
Towns' family is also celebrating other wins in the classroom. He has the important jobs of line leader and door greeter, welcoming his friends into the classroom with words of affirmation. Towns says, "So I open the door and let people in, and that's just my favorite job." Andrea Fuentez says, "We want him to feel included and we really wanted the other students to feel ok with asking questions, and she just handled that beautifully."
The inclusiveness here is intentional, and because of it....everyone is thriving. Fuentez says, "I would describe Towns' year as magical. He's gained lots of confidence in affirming friends and just who he is. Where he might have shied away from activities before, he has the confidence now to face them head-on." Mrs. Pilgram-Smith adds, "We've learned a lot more from him, I feel, in some cases because of his perseverance and his intentionality to just be the best he can be."
This kindergarten teacher and her special student. are inspiring the whole school to not only accept others for their unique abilities but to celebrate them.
