My Grandparents

I was lucky enough to grow up in my grandparent’s house. Our family lived with my grandparents since I was little. As my paternal grandfather passed away when I was very young, I only remember a few memories of him. One thing I surely remember is he used to brush his teeth twice daily without fail. I adopted this habit and ever since I have been doing the same.

My maternal grandparents have been my true systems of support. I am lucky enough to have grown up around such inspirational people. My grandfather was a principal of a college, so he always emphasized the importance of education . He helped us with our homework when my parents were not available. I spent my vacations at their place as I enjoyed living with them.

Similarly, my grandparents always embraced me with open arms. They used to wait for every holiday for our arrival. My grandmother made delicious pickles and meals which we relished greatly. She taught me a few recipes too and tips and tricks that are very useful even today. I simply adore my grandparents for instilling good values in me and my parents and for giving us a safe space to grow up in.

Whether maternal or paternal, grandparents symbolise kids’ love, fun, guidance, and happiness. For kids and the whole family, grandparents are the guiding lights that steer them in the right direction. So, writing an essay on grandparents is exciting for kids.

  • Add a personal touch to the essay by writing about personal feelings.
  • Write about the importance of grandparents in your life.
  • You can add brief information about grandparents’ day.
  • Remember to structure your essay coherently with an introduction, middle and conclusion.

Writing about a subject in sentences is easier than writing an essay for class 1 and 2 students. Therefore, to make them interested in writing, ask them to write sentences and proceed with the essay. Here are ten lines on grandparents for kids for them to take inspiration from:

  • Grandparents are the best blessing every kid can have.
  • My grandparents are always there and love me a lot.
  • They play with me, teach me and also help me learn other creative things.
  • Sometimes, my grandparents cook for me and take me out to the park when my parents are busy.
  • At night, my grandparents help me brush and read bedtime stories.
  • Not only me but my grandparents also love to play with my friends and read stories with us.
  • On weekends, with my parents and grandparents, I go to picnics and have a lot of fun.
  • My grandparents are the ones who get most worried when I am hurt or sick.
  • They inspire me to become a good person and teach me to help others.
  •  I am lucky to have such loving and caring grandparents.

The Grand in grandparents mean more. So, everything is more to grandparents, including more love, care, guidance and fun. My love and affection for my grandparents is different. Grandparents are frequently saviours and protectors for their grandkids. In today’s world of nuclear families, grandparents are not part of the daily lives of grandkids. Still, for grandkids like me, grandparents are precious. I wait to be with them and look forward to their visits. My grandparents, too, are an important part of my life. I enjoy visiting them and treasure the times spent with them.

My Grandparents Essay For Kids - 10 Lines, Short and Long Essay

Grandparents are idols for every kid. Therefore, kids of all ages enjoy expressing themselves. However, young kids may find it hard to write essays on grandparents. Here is a short essay on Grandparents in English for kids for reference:

My grandparents are the most precious people in my life. They assist me in everything from studies to drawing to solving arguments with my friends. They always look after me and care for me. My grandparents are the ones who are the most worried about my well-being and safety. Whenever I am upset or sad, my grandma is the one who cares for me and cheers me up. Her loving hug is enough to ward off all my troubles. She softly strokes my hair while she reads me goodnight stories. My grandma bakes delicious cakes, which are my favourite delicacy. My granddad assists me in doing my school assignments. Every weekend, he takes me to the park. I enjoy seeing him feed the local cats and dogs on the street. They’re my grandfather’s closest companions. Every evening, my grandfather also teaches me how to play chess. I love spending time with my grandparents. They are the ones who always help me and guide me to do the right thing.

As kids progress in their academics, they must write longer essays. Students of higher classes are capable of expressing their views in words better. Hence, they can write long essays on grandparents.

Here is a long essay for class 3 students on grandparents:

Grandparents are the best gifts of life. They are always keeping an eye on their children and grandchildren. But in modern days, most people are losing touch with their traditions as the times change. Nuclear families have changed the dynamics of family values. However, this has also made people realise the importance of grandparents. Grandparents are the pillar that supports the whole family and takes care of their kids and kids of their kids. They bind the entire family with their love and care.

Ask any kid who loves and spoils them the most. And the answer will be the same- grandparents. The love of grandparents is reciprocated equally by grandkids. Their grandparents are the most precious, and they love them the most. Grandparents adore and lavish their grandkids with love, attention, and gifts. But they are also the first people to correct the kids when they make a mistake. With love, they guide grandkids in their lives and teach them the correct values and morals to make them better humans.

In all our lives, grandparents are indeed a blessing. They are the ones who have shaped our parents’ personalities. Our parents love and care for us the way our grandparents did when they were children because of their upbringing. Grandparents are also a source of support. Even though our parents may not support us in a few things, they are often the only people who do everything. Most significantly, grandparents have complete faith in our abilities. They are the ones that encourage us to follow our aspirations in the face of adversity. Even though some of our dreams seem incomprehensible to them, they continue to believe in us. They increase our self-esteem and enable us to perform better. Grandparents are also one of the key reasons we feel secure and protected. We know that our grandparents constantly pray for us, even if we don’t live with them.

They’re on the lookout for us. The house of their grandparents is almost everyone’s heaven. We feel at ease knowing we can always go to our grandparents’ house if needed. They assist us in various ways. Therefore, it’s no surprise that we cannot imagine our lives without our grandparents. My Grandparents Essay

  • Essay on My Grandparents

Grandparents are a tremendous blessing in our lives. They are responsible for the characteristics of our parents. Our parents are incredibly loving and take care of us in the same way that our grandparents did when they were young because of the upbringing they received. In addition, grandparents are a source of support.

100 Words Essay on My Grandparents

200 words essay on my grandparents, 500 words essay on my grandparents, my grandparents.

My Grandparents Essay

My grandparents are really special to me. I hold them in high esteem. They have done beyond and over for me. I will always be thankful for all of their help and kindness. They are the coolest people one will ever meet since they are updated with all knowledge about computers, technology, the internet, and other related topics.

They are the sort of individuals with whom you can discuss anything, even sensitive or confidential matters. In addition to being a buddy, my grandfather is also the finest teacher I have ever had. He has taught me all I know today. He made learning enjoyable for me and never gets upset with me when I mess up. He played a part in helping me realise my goals.

My grandparents are adorable, kind, wise, and understanding. They have always taught me to respect elders and taught me how to live an honourable and prosperous life. They serve as my role model and have always supported me in all aspects of my life. They give their insights that can direct me toward living a good life. I don't have to worry about anything because they are helping me make decisions. My grandparents are 70 and 73 years old, respectively. They still appear to be young in heart and do not appear to be as elderly as other persons their age. They read books, newspapers, and magazines frequently, which contributes to their strong general knowledge.

Why I Love Them

I feel really fortunate to have such kind, endearing, and special grandparents. Every day I learn a lot of new things. They serve as my inspirations. Therefore, they are older now, they still serve as the foundation of our family. I respect my grandparents because they instilled moral principles and ideals that have aided me in everyday life. They both take great care of their physical and mental well-being. They constantly practise yoga and meditation to stay active at their age. They have always cared about my health and urged me to live a healthy lifestyle.

My grandparents' personalities are fascinating. They were always an important role model for me. Throughout the day, they are energetic and active constantly. Everyone in our family adores them. They have a limitless affection for us. They frequently interact with others with a lot of love and caring.

My grandfather regularly takes early walks. He speedily crosses our neighbourhood park every morning as soon as he gets out of bed. He returns and settles down to read one of his favourite books on the lawn. My grandparents share their tales with me. I can never feel down when they are around. My grandparents were the ones who first instilled in me the value of comedy. They both significantly contributed to my character development, and I am grateful to have them in my life.

I seemed to have great luck growing up at my grandparents' home. Since I was a child, our family has lived with my grandparents. I only have a few recollections of my paternal grandpa because he went away when I was a very little child. He used to clean his teeth twice a day without fail. I developed this practice and have continued to do so ever since.

My real support systems have been my maternal grandparents. I am privileged to have been raised by such wonderful people. My grandpa constantly emphasised the value of education because he was a college principal. When my parents were away, he helped us with my homework.

Similarly, my grandparents greeted me with open arms every time me and family visited them. Every holiday, they used to wait for us to come. We loved the delicious dinners and pickles that my grandma cooked. She also taught me several recipes and helpful advice that I still use today. I appreciate my grandparents for teaching moral principles to both my parents and me and for providing a secure environment for us to grow up in.

I learned the fundamental principles of life from my grandparents. They have taught me the true meaning of goodness, love, and affection. They boosted my willpower and helped me become a better person. They are incredibly dear to me. And he has improved our life in so many different ways. I appreciate having them near me.

I Love My Grandparents

I never needed to form friends because my grandparents were my best friends. Thus I never felt the urge to do so. They protected me from my parents whenever I did something wrong. Together, we played many indoor and outdoor activities like cricket, Ludo, and hide and seek.

My granddad and I ride bikes around the neighbourhood and to the park. When I'm bored, he is always willing to play with me. He sings songs and gives me general advice. My grandmother is a positive person. She always smiles and is ready to make what I desire. I enjoy making jokes with them and getting pampered by them. My grandmother taught me how to behave appropriately and looked after me when I was ill. My grandfather buys all the foodstuffs I like.

Essay on Grand Parents

Grandparents are like an angel in disguise who is irreplaceable. They always pamper us endlessly. Their love nurtures us to grow into a beautiful human being. There is even a ‘The National Grandparents Day’ which is founded by Jacob Reingold and Marian McQuade. The first Grandparents Day was followed on September 13, 1961. Grandparents are like the heritage and very important family members as they stand on the top of the family tree.

If you want to write an essay on grandparents, we at Vedantu are here to help you out. The essay given in the following can be considered as an amazing sample. You can refer to it and write an essay about your grandparents on your own. All our study materials are of high quality. These will help you to score well in the exam.

Grandparents not only help their kids and grandkids in their learning and growth but also foster good habits and moral values amongst them. They are the vitamins for the child’s development. Many are not aware of the fact that Jacob Reingold and Marian McQuade are the founders of ‘The National Grandparents Day’. During a conference in the white house, Jacob was focusing on the importance of grandparents in society and he subsequently held the first Grandparents Day on 13th September- Sunday in 1961.

The Latin word ‘Pater’ and ‘Mater’ meaning ‘father’ and ‘mother’ respectively help us conclude the definition of the terms ‘Paternal grandparents’ as father’s parents while ‘Maternal grandparents’ as mother’s parents. At the moment, Grandparents are the oldest ones in our families. They held irreplaceable places in our hearts. Grandparents have inner as well as outer beauty. Being well in physical and mental health is a must-learn lesson from them. Grandparents are heritage and essential members in our families as they stand on the top of the family tree. They bridge the generation gap by narrating the interesting stories of the old generations. They are frequently known as caretakers of the family. Purest forms of culture and tradition are worth learning from them as they play the best role in history sharer. Grandparents are the god of the justice of the family. They believe equality amongst all similar to the way the statue of justice symbolized everyone is equal. They extraordinarily handle the judging part in solving the disputes in the family. Their conclusions don't hear both the parties. Moreover, aren’t they counselors, because they have a way of escape in every Labyrinth. They made the exact scenario of the country before independence stand in front of our eyes while evoking the truth. The importance of the grandparents in lives is significant as they play the teacher to doctor’s role in the growth of individuals.

The words of Richard Garnett touch the heart, he said, “Love is the great gift that one generation can leave for the other.” Love and grandchild from grandparents will never cease as they are the apple of not only a parent's eye but also grandparent’s eyes. They are not usually caught with loads of work resulting in having sufficient time for listening, observing and correcting small things of the child than that of busy parents. No one will disagree with the emotions that they are the heart of the family. Support and care are the two duties of us in the concluding phase of their life. The importance of grandparents is vanishing as the global world is developing with time. If you are lucky enough that you have grandparents still alive, cherish them as many times as you can and give them all they deserve. Life is so much easier when their love is around us. Each word spoken by them touches the heart through ears. There are countless research studies which focus on the benefits extracted from the strong bond between grandparents and the child.

The Key to Writing a Great Essay About a Grandparent

Ivy Divider

When you finally turn off your throwback binge of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and begin the brainstorming stage of the process, make sure to do these things to write an effective essay about your grandmama or papa:

Your essay should first and foremost be about you.

Make sure your grandma doesn’t take over your college essay. An anecdote about an experience or conversation you had with a grandparent can be a great way to illustrate something about your background or values, but your essay should always feature you as the main character. If you need help coming up with a specific story, go mining for mementos like photos and birthday cards. Or better yet, have a conversation if you can! Whether it’s a phone call, an afterschool visit, or a letter of everything you would want to say to a grandparent who has passed away, speaking directly to that person will help you uncover cherished memories that you both participated in. The more specific and detailed your story, the easier it will be to tell it from your perspective. After all, your granny doesn’t need to get accepted to college – and she is probably too old for ramen dinners night after night anyway.

Write about their impact on you…

Once you have homed in on a memory or experience, think about what you learned from it. What does it say about you? Does/did knowing your grandparent make you more understanding? Kind? Curious? Empathetic? What kind of attributes does grandma bring out in you and how does she do that? Maybe your grandmother is known for her elaborate Thanksgiving dinners, and over time, you have become her sous chef. What did this experience teach you about discipline and organization? About secret ingredients and family tradition? About what it really means to be a homemaker? Or perhaps you have been the teacher: showing your Meemaw and Pawpaw how to play Words With Friends so you can feel connected from afar. Whatever the story, remember that it should lead to a bigger lesson about who you are or who you have become as a result of knowing your amazing grandparents.

…and then prove it

Finally, you have to show, not tell. Remember that conversation we mentioned earlier? Here’s where your notes, photos, and scrapbooks will come in handy. Concrete details and bits of dialogue are the final key ingredient to any college essay — but especially the kind built around a relationship. Don’t just say that your grandparent makes you more adventurous – tell admissions about the time you risked all of your team’s points in Jeopardy because you were confident in your answer and remembered your grandpa telling you that you have to take great risks to see great rewards. Show admissions how you’ve applied what your grandparent taught you to your everyday life.

If your essay reads as a eulogy to your grandparent, think about how you can turn the essay around. One way to do this would be to try to only include your grandparent in the first and last paragraph of your essay: introduce your relationship and its’ impact, tell your own story, and bring that story full circle back to your grandparent. This, of course, isn’t the only way to structure your essay .

My Grandparents

Essay No. 01

Children adore their parents so what do they feel for their grandparents who are nothing but parents with a whole lot of icing! Forever patient, forever kind and forever spoiling, grandparents make children feel important and secure. My grandparents were all that and more.

As a child I was closest to my maternal grandfather. He would spoil me rotten, tell me stories, buy me candy, take me for walks, listen patiently to all that I had to say and most importantly, save me from Mom! I lost my paternal grandmother, unfortunately, when I was very young. She was the epitome of kindness, I was told. My paternal grandfather lived with my aunt in Canada and we saw him but once a year, gathered all his magnanimous gifts, said a solemn thank you and stayed away. He was a man of few words who had spent his life time toiling for a very large family (siblings and their families included). My maternal grandmother was strict and we always got into trouble with her. I lost my maternal grandfather when I was fourteen after which I got closer to both my maternal grandmother and paternal grandfather. The former died a few years later but only after our lovely relationship blossomed. The latter remained my dearest friend, philosopher and guide and stayed with me till he was a hundred, two years ago. I really have been fortunate to be blessed, thus.

“What children need most are the essentials that grandparents provide in abundance. They give unconditional love, kindness, patience. humor, comfort, lessons in life and, most importantly, cookies.”

Essay No. 02

If you have grandparents, you are indeed lucky! I have two sets of them—my father’s parents, and my mother’s parents. My grandparents on my father’s side live with us.

My grandfather goes for a long walk in the morning and on the way back he picks up the milk bottles. My grandmother is busy in the kitchen since my mother goes out to work.

In the evening, we all sit down together and fell each other about the day’s happenings. Granny tells us interesting stories about her youth while Grandpa talks seriously with my father. I can’t imagine my family without my grandparents.

Once in a while, my mother’s parents visit us. You should see my mother then! She is all smiles, bustling about in the kitchen, making tasty dishes. She even forgets to tell me to study!

We all have a wonderful time, for granny always brings fantastic gifts and is full of life and laughter. She really loves us. Grandpa too, although quiet, is very affectionate. He is a wizard in Math’s and whenever he comes I ask him to teach me.

When both the grandfathers get together it is great fun listening to them. The grandmothers’ conversation deals with how good their son and daughter are, and the grandfathers talk of the freedom struggle and how the country’s standards are going down.

As I said before—you are indeed lucky if you have grandparents!

An Essay on Time Spent with Grandparents [PDF]

Grandparents are so awesome, are not they? today we are going to see an essay on time spent grandparents, and how I feel while I spend my time with them, so let’s dive into the essay.

Essay on Time Spent with Grandparents feature image

While all my friends were getting excited about the weekend that they would see their grandparents, I never understood them. To me, there was nothing to talk about when they were talking about their grandparents.

Not that I had no grandparent, but we just never visited them. All our weekend would be spent on outdoor activities like children’s sports as we wait for holiday camping.

We never had any story to tell about our grandparents. Well, my elder siblings used to tell me that they used to visit granny when they were young. Nobody told me why they stopped.

However, the stories my classmates would tell about their experience with their grannies made me curious, wanting to have a story to tell too. So I asked mum that she take me to see them. Unexpectedly, she promised to take me over the next weekend. What a fun moment did I have!

I guess mum had told my grandparents about the visit, so they were eager to see us. Everything was wonderful. The first thing that took my attention is the type of traditional food that granny made for us.

I won’t say that mammy does not make us delicious food, but then the food I took that day was friendlier to my mouth. I loved the fact that she entertained by being in the kitchen.

I now understand why all that my friend talks about when it comes to their grandparents is food. Well, they have other stories, but when it comes to food, everyone wants to talk.

The weekend gave me a break from the baked food that we are used to at home. My grandmother noticed that I was so entertained about the food and so she packed the rest for me. What generous granny!

Another thing that made my day was how my grannies were able to give me stories, some fiction, while other real-life stories. For the first time, I spent a whole day without thinking about where my tab was for games.

The stories were so fascinating with lots of lessons. Even for the ones that seemed factious, they would talk about is as though they were present when the scene was taking place.

I loved the zeal that they had. I realized that most of the stories that my grandfather had been more of war-related, while those that my grandmother had been more of family and religious related.

In of the significant thing that I learned was that at times things happens in life that at times can make you doubt whether you will come out of it and smile.

I also enjoyed playing around with my grandparent’s pets. Wow! I am still thinking about Petra, my grannies’ doggy. This dog would run from one end of the compound to another as we play around with my cousin’s ball.

I realized he used loved playing around with the ball as though chasing me but on a jockey ground. This took the better part of my day since the compound was fascinating. I am not a cat lover, so I didn’t mind about the pet cat whom some people would call pretty.

I loved the whole day at my grandparents’ place. If mommy makes a joke about going back, I think I will spend the entire night doing my homework to make the proposed day free.

I have not been able to stop talking about the day. Every time we are storing as a family, I tend to get attracted to the memories I brought home. I am hoping that I will get such a change soon.

Essay on Grandparents for Students in English [Easy Words*]

January 19, 2021 by Sandeep

Essay on Grandparents: The most loving, caring and benevolent human beings are our grandparents. They teach good behaviour to their grandchildren and beautiful ways to lead a successful and respectable life. They share their life experiences and inspire us with their struggles and positivity. They hold our hands throughout without much expectation from us. We should always offer love, care and shower them with kindness. They motivate us to maintain good health and physical fitness.

Essay on Grandparents 500 Words in English

Below we have provided My Grandparents Essay in English, suitable for class 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 & 10 school students.

Our grandparents are the greatest gift to us by God. Their care and affection serve to be the root that holds our family together. Our childhood days, spent with our grandparents, feel blissful. The grandparent and grandchildren bond is truly fascinating. It keeps both of our innocence alive. Thus, we must treasure it.

My Grandparents

They say people who have their grandparents are the luckiest. I agree with this statement. My grandparents are my best friends, and I love them. They are both fun-loving creatures. Their knowledge has no bounds. Whenever I fall, they are present to pick me up. Sadly, we live in different places. However, I make sure I meet them every weekend.

My Grandfather

Though my grandfather is 70 years old, he is still young at heart. He retired as an army officer. He has a great personality, and he has an even greater sense of humour. He has an excellent fitness routine. Whenever we go out for a picnic, he makes sure we get to spend quality time in sports activities.

We both love to prank everyone else. Often I find him solving Sudoku puzzles in the weekly magazines. Apart from that, he loves to read. And he makes sure to hand me a book whenever we meet. I wonder how he always stays cheerful. His actions inspire me to have bigger dreams.

My Grandmother

Out of all, the lovely ladies in our family, my grandmother is the best. She is 65 years old, yet she looks so young. She has always been a remarkable teacher-both, personally and professionally. To her, life neither started nor ended in books. It feels amazing to spend time with her.

My grandmother is such a great cook. We always sneak into the kitchen and experiment with new recipes. Her tricks and tips never fail. Besides that, we love watching movies together. She is always kind to everyone. Her thoughtfulness moves me. She always guides me towards making the right decision.

Importance of Grandparents in Our Life

The role of grandparents in each individual’s life is nothing short of vital.  The growing stage of a child is critical. It is when he/she learns about the essence of life. Often in this hectic world, parents cannot spend quality time with their children. However, children begin to learn the morals and core values of life in their grandparents’ presence.

Interaction with your grandparents allows you to explore the world. You get to peek through their lives from a closer perspective. You inculcate sharing and caring habits when you are close to your grandparents. Your parents might scold you, but your grandparents will never do that. They are your biggest supporters throughout life.

It’s a transition from the fast-paced, technology-driven life to a simpler, more peaceful existence.

500 Words Essay on A Visit to My Grandparents House

Introduction.

Visiting my grandparents’ house is always an enriching experience, filled with warmth, wisdom, and a sense of timeless tranquility. Nestled in the countryside, their abode is a haven away from the hustle and bustle of city life, a place where the clock seems to slow down and life takes on a different rhythm.

Stepping Back in Time

Arriving at my grandparents’ house is like stepping into a time capsule. The house, a charming old cottage, is adorned with relics from the past, each telling its own story. Antique furniture, black and white photographs, and vintage decor pieces transport me to a bygone era, offering a glimpse into the life and times of my ancestors.

The Garden of Eden

Their backyard is a sprawling garden, a veritable Eden, teeming with fruit trees, blooming flowers, and buzzing bees. The garden is a testament to my grandparents’ love for nature and their dedication to nurturing life. It’s here that I’ve learned some of my most invaluable lessons about patience and the rewards of hard work.

The Kitchen of Memories

The kitchen, the heart of the house, is where my grandmother weaves magic with her culinary skills. The aroma of home-cooked meals, the clatter of utensils, and the warmth of the old wood-fired stove, all contribute to a sense of comfort and nostalgia. It’s here that I’ve learned that food is not just about sustenance, but also about love, tradition, and community.

Wisdom in Stories

Evenings are reserved for storytelling sessions with my grandfather. His tales, filled with wisdom and humor, are a window to the world beyond textbooks. They’ve taught me about the resilience of the human spirit, the importance of kindness, and the value of humility. These stories, told in the soft glow of the setting sun, have shaped my worldview and left an indelible mark on my character.

A visit to my grandparents’ house is more than just a break from routine. It’s a journey into the past, a communion with nature, a culinary adventure, and a treasure trove of wisdom. The memories I’ve made and the lessons I’ve learned there are invaluable. They’ve enriched my life and broadened my perspective, reminding me of the simple joys of life and the timeless wisdom of the older generation.

In the end, my grandparents’ house is not just a physical structure; it’s a living, breathing entity, filled with stories, wisdom, and love. It’s a place where I’ve grown, learned, and evolved. It’s a place I call home.

That’s it! I hope the essay helped you.

How Two Chicana Nerds Wrote Their Way Back to Oxnard

Michele serros and i did everything we could to escape our socal hometown—only to find it lived within us.

my grandparents essay writing

Literary scholar Cristina Herrera was born and raised in Oxnard, California, a place she was desperate to leave behind until she discovered the late Michele Serros, another Chicana writer from the town. Herrera explains how Serros’ relationship with Oxnard helped to transform her own. Michele Serros and her friends at prom. California State University, Channel Islands Chicana/o Studies Department.

by Cristina Herrera | June 4, 2024

Growing up as a Chicana nerd, I never thought I’d write a book about myself, much less about Oxnard, where I grew up. This humble city on the Southern California coast was hardly the stuff worth writing about. Or so I had been taught throughout my elementary and high school years.

But then, as an adult, I began researching the late Chicana writer Michele Serros, who also grew up in Oxnard, and who deftly—defiantly even—wrote about our shared hometown in every work she authored, and I surprised myself. Discovering Serros sent me back home. I had planned to write a literary analysis of representations of Chicana adolescence throughout Southern California, using young adult novels set in San Diego, Santa Barbara, and Oxnard. I wound up penning a sort of memoir: confronting memories of pain, loss, and isolation that mirrored Serros’ own feelings of out-of-placeness in a city that has never quite welcomed Chicana misfits like us.

Mapping Oxnard’s presence in Serros’ work, and interweaving my own personal history, helped me understand what it meant to come of age in the 805 area code, and to consider Chicana adolescent identity and subjectivity.

my grandparents essay writing

Oxnard is a curious sort of city. Known for its abundant strawberry fields and mild coastal climate, its main claim to fame these days is hosting the Dallas Cowboys’ yearly summer training camp. However, as scholar and Oxnard native Frank P. Barajas has written , places like Oxnard hold rich histories of community activism and political involvement. Oxnard was “founded” by white agribusiness settlers, but it was mainly Mexican and Japanese laborers who toiled in its sugar beet fields. While the Chicano Movement is typically associated with more famous parts of California such as Los Angeles, Oxnard too was the site of activism and political awakening throughout the 1960s.

Growing up I had heard stories of family members’ involvement with Chicano activist groups like the Brown Berets. My mother once shared that she and my grandmother sewed the hats my uncles wore with their cargo pants and white tee shirts—the preferred attire for activists during the late 1960s and early 1970s. But these were mere anecdotes I heard here and there. I never read anything about Oxnard’s history in my high school textbooks. I had the distinct feeling—even though it was never uttered aloud—that things like “history,” “culture,” and “literature” didn’t exist in Oxnard. Look elsewhere, my teachers implicitly said. Nothing for you here, the schools suggested. Move it along.

my grandparents essay writing

So perhaps it was not at all ironic that I only learned about Serros when I was working on a PhD in English, and that the discovery was purely accidental. I was researching contemporary Chicana literature; a library database search served up Serros’ most famous book, 1998’s Chicana Falsa , with its eye-catching subtitle: And Other Stories of Death, Identity, and Oxnard . The collection featured gut-wrenching and funny tales of speaking Spanglish, hating high school, accusations of being a “fake” Chicana, and of course, dreaming of one day getting the hell out of Oxnard.

The discovery that such a book even existed caught me off guard and made me wonder if I’d been kept from a juicy secret that I should have known decades earlier. When I told my mother about it, she casually said, “Oh yeah, I know Michele. She’s related to la familia Serros.”

That familia Serros? As in the guys who taught my twin sister and me how to swim at La Colonia pool, minutes away from my maternal grandparents’ home?  Yep, that one. Serros’s grandparents and great-grandparents, much like my own, migrated to Oxnard in the first half of the 20th century and lived in the Mexican barrio known as La Colonia. Oxnard was relatively small, hovering at just about 40,000 residents by 1960, and most of its earliest Mexican residents would have, at one time or another, known each other.

my grandparents essay writing

In the first half of the 20th century, Cristina Herrera’s family, pictured, lived in Oxnard’s La Colonia barrio—just like the Serros family. Courtesy of Serafina Herrera (author’s mother).

My Mamá Chonita and Papá Tomás, it turned out, had been close friends with Michele’s family. When I was in high school in the early to mid-1990s, Serros had already published Chicana Falsa . In the years that followed, she would publish other important texts, including How to Be a Chicana Role Model (in 2000) and even a young adult novel, Honey Blonde Chica (in 2006). Her works explored complex themes like identity and what it means to not readily be accepted as Chicana because of her struggles with Spanish. Like much Latinx literature, Serros embraced hybridity, even as she troubled identity terms like Chicana and Chicano. She died of cancer, at 48, in 2015. All this time, I had no idea about her family connection to mine.

When I learned about Serros’ work, I did something I’m still ashamed to admit. I tucked her books away in my shelves, occasionally reading them but choosing not to study them too closely for fear that they would dredge up unpleasant memories of Oxnard. Which they do. When Serros mentions Oxnard street names like Vineyard Avenue or landmarks like Plaza Park, I picture them clearly, a kind of familiarity that is akin to coming home. Except coming home isn’t always fun. Returning to Oxnard means having to relive the high school bullying, the invisibility, and my father’s abandonment. It means confronting pain.

Writing about one’s wounds is a tricky thing. It’s messy, even ugly. But it’s a necessary voyage, I learned as my book took shape, and Serros’ works loomed ever and ever larger. As I wrote about Chicana Falsa and her later books, I started to do so with an unabashed glimpse into my own Chicana teen years. How terrifying high school was for a quiet kid who struggled to make friends, the exact opposite of my popular older brothers, Chavita and Marcos, who everyone knew by name because they excelled in sports. Much as Serros’ poem, “The Best Years of My Life,” documents a facetious but all too real account of a Chicana teen lost in the crowd, I also was largely invisible in Oxnard High School, a place that rendered me not really Chicana. When Serros wrote, “Every day I dragged my feet in customized black and pink Vans (only thing about me the right color, right size),” she may as well have been talking about me, for no matter how you sliced it, I was never quite right in my classmates’ eyes. My classmates viewed me as the lesser kind of Brown because I was shy, awkward, and liked to read.

I attributed these painful years to living in Oxnard, a place I was desperate to flee the first chance I got—and did, taking jobs in Central California and Portland, Oregon that put Oxnard in my rearview mirror. Serros, too, yearned to escape, to live in a big city, to create art. But even as we drive away, we can’t avoid the rear view. My book taught me that. Oxnard taught me that. Michele Serros taught me that.

I live far from the city that raised me, but my hometown still resides in me. Readers may be uncomfortable with my refusal to romanticize a city I haven’t always loved, and that hasn’t always loved me in return. My family will likely struggle to understand why I have written these words, and why I chose to write them now. Call it a compulsion, an itch, a drive. Oxnard called to me, Serros called to me. This time I finally answered.

For Her Third Album, Angélica Garcia Adds Her First Language: Spanish

“Gemelo” is a largely electronic exploration of all kinds of dualities: “With any music I make from now on, I’m going to be writing in both languages.”

A woman in a draped red top poses in front of greenery, with one bare arm brought up over her head and the other arm, wrapped in fabric, curved around the back of her head.

By Jon Pareles

“My blood speaks Spanish to me,” Angélica Garcia sang in “Red Moon Rising,” a track on her 2016 debut album, “Medicine for Birds.” Garcia, who was born in California, was living in Virginia; the album leaned toward indie-rock and Americana. But the lyric turned out to be prophetic.

She was already thinking about the legacy of her maternal grandparents, who are from Mexico and El Salvador, and the musical heritage her parents maintained. Garcia’s second album, “Cha Cha Palace,” delved further into what it meant to be a Chicana growing up bicultural in the San Gabriel Valley — a quintessentially American experience, yet a very individual one. “Been wearing my roots and flying this flag,” she sang in “Jícama,” which former President Barack Obama listed among his favorite songs of 2019 .

“One day I showed my grandmother ‘Cha Cha Palace,’” Garcia, 30, said in a video interview from the kitchen of her apartment in Los Angeles. “And I realized I’d made this whole record about growing up in El Monte, and she didn’t even understand it. It just hit me that I’m missing a whole side of my culture and people because of the language I’m choosing to write in.”

Garcia’s new album, “Gemelo” (“Twin”), out Friday, expands on both her bloodlines and her ambitions, and features lyrics in Spanish. True to its title, its songs are full of dualities: angels and demons, grief and healing, dreams and realities, mirror images. The album opens with a somber chorale titled “Reflexiones” (“Reflections”), while in “Gemini,” Garcia sings, “I see double everywhere I go.”

The music is largely electronic, unleashing the directness of Garcia’s voice — sometimes ghostly and airborne, sometimes a near-scream — amid programming, loops and layering. There are moments that hint at Kate Bush, Bjork, M.I.A. and Santigold.

Garcia grew up speaking Spanish at home with her grandparents, but said she lost it “once I got into the public school system.”

“Honestly, I think the most punk thing I ever did was write in Spanish as a Chicana,” she added. “There were all kinds of feelings from everybody. Some people were like, ‘Your Spanish is really bad, don’t do this, it’s embarrassing.’ And then you have other people like, ‘Screw Spanish, it’s the language of the colonizer,’ yada yada yada.”

But, she explained, “I just realized that this is something I want to do. With any music I make from now on, I’m going to be writing in both languages — or all three if you count Spanglish as its own language.”

For Garcia, each has its own mood and musicality. “To me, English feels like a sword fight,” she said. “It’s very cutting and sharp and quick. Whereas Spanish feels like there’s just this poetry to it. You stroll around something to get to it. Or you’re sitting in front of a window on a rainy day writing. And then Spanglish feels like a party.”

“Cha Cha Palace” was released in 2020, and Garcia was mid-tour when the pandemic set in. “Gemelo” got its start amid pandemic isolation and introspection.

“I was putting a lot of work and intention into understanding where I came from and where my family came from,” Garcia said. “I remember keeping all these journals like a madwoman, brainstorming and putting everything on the wall and trying to connect everything. I was trying to understand what things, what qualities of theirs that I maybe carried, like nature versus nurture. What is ingrained in me? And what is all mine?”

One of the first songs she came up with was “ Juanita” ; it arrived, she said, like “a gift.” It’s an electronic cumbia — a bedrock Latin American rhythm — with lyrics about a mystical encounter: “You made me wake up/ Your voice the sound of stars,” Garcia sings. Only after she wrote it did she learn that one of her great-grandmothers was named Juanita.

Garcia grew up surrounded by music, singing and harmonizing with her family. Her mother had a recording career in the 1990s, billed as Angelica ; her stepfather worked in A&R, though he later became an Episcopal priest in Virginia. Garcia passed auditions to study at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, where she learned the subtleties of classical and jazz technique; her classmates included Phoebe Bridgers and members of Haim.

But some of her most important lessons came from her mother, who was steeped in the volatile emotionality of Mexican rancheras. “Her way of teaching was to just make me start over,” Garcia recalled. “‘No, do it again. I don’t believe you!’ When you’re singing dramatic music, you have to go all the way. I was learning the power of tapping into my emotions.”

The indie scene in Richmond, Va., gave Garcia the room to try different styles and experiment; she was playing in five bands at once while she was making “Cha Cha Palace.” She moved in with her grandparents when the pandemic set in, and then to Brooklyn, where she spent a year and a half before returning to Los Angeles early this year. In New York, she worked at House of Yes, a dance club, performance space and party room in Bushwick.

“Every night was a different theme,” she said. “I’d be biking home at 4:30 in the morning in my little go-go outfit, watching the moon and the sun exchange places, and avoiding rats.”

At the same time, she was constructing new songs — largely with her voice, singing and beatboxing the rhythms, melodies, harmonies and hooks. During the interview, she picked up a TC Helicon looper, a gadget that she uses constantly, onstage and off. “The most free that I feel is singing, so the looper would help me a lot to flesh out ideas,” she said. “It’s almost my wife.”

Garcia was already in touch with Carlos Arévalo, the guitarist for the eclectic, retro-tinged Los Angeles band Chicano Batman. He had discovered her music among prospective opening acts for a 2020 tour that was canceled by Covid. In 2021, she began sending him songs in progress; he suggested ideas and possible producers. Eventually, she convinced him to produce the album himself — his first album production.

“I knew this was a pivotal record for her in her career,” Arévalo said via video interview from a Chicano Batman tour stop in Oklahoma City. “She wanted the world to really see for the first time who she was on her terms, not what the label thought she should be and not what her community thought she should be.”

Garcia had firm ideas for what she wanted: “She didn’t want it to sound like a band,” Arévalo said. “She wanted it to sound like pop, electronic. She had a running joke: ‘Like Radiohead with booty.’”

“Gemelo” doesn’t aim for dance-floor simplicity; nor does it latch onto the world-conquering pop beat of reggaeton. It’s an album of introspection and catharsis, about what Garcia calls “cycles of grief.” Garcia concocts her own beats, often irregular ones, and she revels in dynamic contrasts, from quiet and dulcet to explosive.

As she was writing the songs, Garcia said, “there were things that had me in my room crying, very low points. First it’s just the grief, right? But then you get up and try to voice it and you get excited when you hear, ‘Oh, but with that bass line, it sounds really cool.’ It’s kind of the coolest superpower ever that musicians have,” she added. “We can take something that really could debilitate so many people and make it into something else — a whole other experience.”

In “Color de Dolor” (“Color of Pain”), she sings about drawing inspiration from sorrows: “Even though I will never sever the tie with my pains/ I paint them full of colors,” she vows. And in “El Que” (“He That),” she confronts a figure who undermines her, who “Makes cold, robs energy, controls, bewitches,” with a crescendo building as she warns, “Don’t follow me with your shadow — I have my light!”

For Garcia, music has always been “the one place where I could say exactly what I thought,” she said. “My whole life, I’ve just tried to follow where the music was calling me.”

She smiled and pointed to her head. “It’s very loud in here.”

An earlier version of this article misstated a song title on Angélica Garcia’s new album. It is “Gemini,” not “Gemini II.”

Janis Paige, comedic singing star of stage and screen, dies at 101

She was on Broadway in “The Pajama Game” and danced with Fred Astaire in the movie “Silk Stockings."

my grandparents essay writing

Janis Paige, an exuberant nightclub performer who starred on Broadway in “The Pajama Game,” swung from a chandelier with Fred Astaire in the movie “Silk Stockings” and played a flirtatious waitress who tempts Archie Bunker to stray from his marriage vows on the sitcom “All in the Family,” died June 2 at her home in West Hollywood. She was 101.

Her death was confirmed by her friend Stuart Lampert, who said she had been in hospice but did not cite a specific cause.

Although Ms. Paige appeared in westerns and melodramas, she was best known as a scene-stealing comic actress in parts that often brandished her mile-long legs and flashing eyes. Film critic Alton Cook of the New York World-Telegram and Sun described her as “one of the most deft and engaging of our girl clowns.”

Talent scouts spotted her singing opera at the Hollywood Canteen, a club that catered to servicemen on leave during World War II. Within a year, she was under contract to Warner Bros. studios and cast in the film “Hollywood Canteen” (1944) as a hostess and aspiring actress who bewitches a wolfish soldier (Dane Clark). When he asks for a date, she fends him off with dramatic flourish: “I give so much of myself to my art, and there’d be so little left for you.”

She also played a gangster’s moll and chanteuse in the melodrama “Her Kind of Man” (1946) and had decorative roles in “Winter Meeting” (1948), starring Bette Davis, and “Wallflower” (1948) as the glamorous sister of studious Joyce Reynolds.

There were plenty of musical comedies in the mix, often with co-stars Jack Carson or Dennis Morgan. In the western “Cheyenne” (1947), she played a dancehall chanteuse who performs atop a bar .

Her other films included “Two Guys from Milwaukee,” “The Time, the Place and the Girl” (both 1946) and “Romance on the High Seas” (1948). The last marked the movie debut of Doris Day , whose studio career waxed as Ms. Paige’s rapidly waned.

To rejuvenate her prospects, Ms. Paige assembled a touring nightclub act that played in Las Vegas, New York and points in between. She made her Broadway debut in 1951, portraying a comely but hopelessly bad singer in the Howard Lindsay-Russel Crouse mystery-comedy “Remains to Be Seen.”

Ms. Paige became a major Broadway star playing the union grievance committee leader in “The Pajama Game” (1954), a musical romance set amid labor-management tensions at a pajama factory. The show, which ran two years, won the Tony Award for best musical, provided an early showcase for the modern dance choreography of Bob Fosse, and featured a bevy of hit songs by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross.

Ms. Paige was turned down for the 1957 film version, which featured her Broadway co-star, John Raitt, opposite Day. “For the movie, they needed a box office name,” she told the Associated Press years later. “They wanted Frank Sinatra to play John Raitt's role. Frank considered it and turned it down. I would have played my role.”

“I never get devastated about things like that,” she added. “I’m lucky to have had the show. I always felt that way. There’s nothing like the original.”

The musical’s success — and her headline act at the Cocoanut Grove nightclub in Los Angeles — made Ms. Paige a household name. She had a starring role on “It’s Always Jan” (1955), a short-lived CBS sitcom about a widowed cabaret star raising a young daughter. She also won a supporting role as a flamboyant Hollywood actress opposite Astaire and Cyd Charisse in “Silk Stockings” (1957).

The film was based on a 1955 Broadway musical adaptation of the 1939 movie “Ninotchka,” a romantic comedy starring Greta Garbo and Melvyn Douglas. Ms. Paige provided the movie with some much-needed juice — especially her droll rendition of Cole Porter’s “Stereophonic Sound,” choreographed by Hermes Pan and culminating in Ms. Paige and Astaire gliding across the room, suspended from a chandelier .

“It was hard work, believe me,” she later told the Miami Herald, describing weeks of rehearsals. “I was one mass of bruises. I didn’t know how to fall … because I was never a classic dancer.”

She added that she was too intimidated by Astaire to refuse his idea for the chandelier sequence. “He showed me and said, ‘You think you can do that?’ And I said, ‘Sure, I can do that.’ Not knowing if I was going to fall on my face or not. I didn’t.”

She returned to Broadway in 1963 for “Here’s Love,” Meredith Willson’s musical adaptation of the 1947 Christmas film “Miracle on 34th Street.” In the role Maureen O’Hara originated on screen, Ms. Paige played a cynical working mother whose young daughter clings to an abiding faith in Santa Claus.

In 1968, Ms. Paige took over from Angela Lansbury in Jerry Herman’s long-running Broadway musical comedy “Mame,” playing a bohemian socialite caring for her orphaned nephew. “She looks glowingly well and sings, dances and acts with a sweet enthusiasm, but not perhaps the bittersweet enthusiasm Miss Lansbury presented,” New York Times theater critic Clive Barnes wrote. “She is less of a character but, as some compensation, perhaps more of a performer.”

In the movie comedy “Please Don’t Eat the Daisies” (1960), Ms. Paige had a vivid supporting role as an actress who slaps theater critic David Niven for giving her a bad review. She was part of Bob Hope’s USO shows and was a television stalwart, with appearances on variety shows, afternoon soap operas such as “General Hospital” and series including “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” “Trapper John, M.D.” and “St. Elsewhere.”

Most memorable was a guest role on “All in the Family,” as a diner waitress with hungry eyes for Carroll O’Connor’s Archie Bunker. Archie was a comically lovable bigot who, whatever his many faults, seemed devoted to his bighearted wife, Edith. Feeling neglected because of his wife’s volunteer work, he is susceptible to Ms. Paige’s unsubtle invitation to her home.

Ms. Paige told the Herald that she received mounds of angry letters for almost wrecking the Bunkers’ TV marriage. “My God, they hated me,” she said. “I had hate mail: ‘How dare you come between Archie and Edith? How dare you do this?’ And other people would write, ‘It’s about time he kissed somebody else, and I would have kissed you, too, if I had been there.’ ”

Donna Mae Tjaden was born in Tacoma, Wash., on Sept. 16, 1922. She was 4 when her parents separated and was raised by her mother and grandparents. Her mother encouraged her show business ambitions, which took her to Hollywood within a year of completing high school.

Her marriages to restaurateur Frank Martinelli Jr. and TV producer Arthur Stander ended in divorce. She was married to Ray Gilbert, the Oscar-winning lyricist of “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah,” from 1962 until his death in 1976. Complete information on survivors was not immediately available.

For years, Ms. Paige ran a music publishing company that Gilbert formed with the bossa nova composer-performer Antonio Carlos Jobim. Despite struggling with vocal cord damage, she continued an active cabaret career into her 90s with a one-woman autobiographical show that blended songs with spicy patter about aging .

In a forceful coda to her career, amid a national debate about how powerful men treat young women, she wrote an essay in the Hollywood Reporter in 2017 about sexual assault in Hollywood. She said that, as a starlet who was “still a virgin, untouched and blind to the predators waiting,” she was pressured by a director to go on a date with his friend, the department store scion Alfred Bloomingdale , who attempted to rape her that night.

“The fear for my job, the fear that no one would believe me and the shame I felt at the betrayal of myself kept me quiet all these years,” she wrote. Referring to the social media hashtag #MeToo that conveys solidarity with victims of sexual assault and harassment, she added: “At 95, time is not on my side, and neither is silence. I simply want to add my name and say, ‘Me too.’ ”
