The postgraduate programs in Clinical Psychology are highly competitive and there are many more applicants than places available. Therefore, at Griffith there is a highly structured application process. Admission to all Clinical Psychology programs is restricted to students who are registered Psychologists or who are eligible for provisional registration with the Psychology Board of Australia. The application process involves three stages .

Stage 1: The application

All applicants are required to demonstrate their capability for training in Clinical Psychology as follows:

  • Academic Achievement/Intellectual Ability: Applicants must have completed a program in Psychology extending over four years and accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC). Preference is given to applicants who have completed an Honours degree in Psychology which involves an individual research project awarded at the level of a First or Second Class Division A. It is highly desirable that applicants will have completed courses or units that are relevant to Clinical Psychology (for example, Abnormal Psychology, Counselling Psychology or Health Psychology). The Grade Point Average in the undergraduate degree, fourth year and relevant courses will be taken into account.
  • Interpersonal and Counselling Capability: Given the interpersonal sensitivity and awareness required for effective clinical practice, successful applicants will be expected to demonstrate a high level of interpersonal skills. Furthermore, in order for the program to build on a reasonably advanced applied skill baseline, successful applicants will be expected to demonstrate at least a basic level of competence in the counselling context, evidence of warmth and empathic responding and an openness to a range of approaches. This may be demonstrated by evidence of previous counselling training and relevant volunteer or work experience.
  • Personal Statement : For assistance with this statement, see the Position description for a Clinical Psychology trainee and the Self-assessment / Colleague-assessment checklists.
  • Support from Referees: Two referee reports are required - one from an academic who knows your work well and a second from a professional referee who can attest to your interpersonal and counselling capabilities. See below for the Australian Psychology Postgraduate Program Reference Request System process.

Stage 2: The interview

Please note that, given the competitive nature of this program, only those applicants who have been evaluated by a panel of the clinical team as having demonstrated their suitability for training in clinical psychology (according to the above criteria and ranked sufficiently high enough relative to others) will be shortlisted for an interview.

The interview itself consists of a multi-station assessment process. Applicants are required to attend a face-to-face session that takes around half a day to complete. Applicants will be required to demonstrate sound interpersonal and emotion management skills as they respond to the various tasks at each station. Tasks include, for example, responding to an ethical dilemma, roleplaying an interview, roleplaying a supervision session, discussing research, responding to questions relating to their own reasons for applying for training in clinical psychology and a written task.

Applicants are assessed by a panel of clinical program staff in the multi-station interview process. Applicants will be ranked according to their performance at each station and those ranked highly enough will be offered a place in the program.

Stage 3: The offer

First round offers will be made by mid-November to applicants who are ranked at a sufficiently high level. A waitlist of applicants will be retained as second and third round offers may be made as late as January. Unsuccessful applicants will be advised as soon as is practically possible.

Note: Applicants are not permitted to defer an offer. Should you be unable to accept an offer, you must re-apply for entry in the following intake.

Language requirements

English language requirements apply to International applicants and other applicants whose previous study was undertaken in a language other than English. The minimum English language requirements for such applicants for entry to these programs are described below .

Credit and recognition of prior learning

Griffith University awards credit for prior learning which may relate to prior formal learning or prior informal and non-formal learning. For more information see below .

An international student is a person who is not Australian citizen, a New Zealand citizen, a Pacific Engagement visa holder or the holder of a permanent resident/humanitarian visa.

This program is available to International students for study in Australia at Griffith University .

International students applying to study on-campus in Australia will require a student visa or another type of visa which does not preclude them from studying in Australia.

You can apply for admission online OR via a Griffith University registered agent .

International applicants who hold overseas Psychology qualifications must have their Psychology qualification assessed as equivalent to an Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) accredited degree prior to applying for entry to the Master of Clinical Psychology program at Griffith University. Applicants must apply to the Australian Psychological Society (APS) for assessment of their overseas qualification in Psychology before applying and include the APS Notice of Assessment with the application.

In addition to your online application, applicants who apply for the Master of Clinical Psychology are required to complete the Personal Statement and use the Australian Psychology Postgraduate Program Reference Request System . This system allows applicants for Australian higher degree programs in Psychology to apply for a reference from academic and/or professional referees and for these references to be shared with the nominated institutions.

The process is as follows:

  • The applicant registers online via the Australian Psychology Postgraduate Program Reference Request System and pays the subscription fee.
  • The applicant nominates referees and indicates the programs and institutions to which they are applying. The applicant is required to provide two references.
  • The referees complete a reference online.
  • The applicant then allows the completed references to be shared with the programs to which they have applied.
  • This system is the same across most Australian Universities. To be able to use the system, you will need to have an active subscription which can be paid through the 'My Account' section in the payment tab.

Note:  Applicants are not permitted to defer an offer. Should you be unable to accept an offer, you must re-apply for entry in the following intake.

English language requirements apply to International applicants and other applicants whose previous study was undertaken in a country other than Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, United Kingdom, the United States of America or South Africa or undertaken in a language other than English. The minimum English language requirements for such applicants for admission to this program are as follows:

  • A minimum overall band score of 7.0 on IELTS (Academic) with a minimum of 7.0 in each sub-score;
  • OR an internet-based (iBT) TOEFL score of 94 (minimum score of 24 for listening and reading, 27 for writing and 23 for speaking);
  • OR a minimum overall score of 65 in the Pearson Test of English (Academic) with no score less than 65;
  • OR successful completion of at least two years of secondary education and your entire tertiary studies in psychology taught and assessed solely in English from a recognised country*;
  • OR successful completion of at least six years (full time equivalent) continuous education, including your tertiary qualifications in psychology, that were taught and assessed solely in English from a recognised country* prior to commencement.

English test results must be no more than two years old.

* Recognised countries: Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, South Africa, United Kingdom and the United States of America.

Applicants should refer to the Psychology Board of Australia website for the English Language Skills Registration Standard that is required for registration or provisional registration as a psychologist. If there is any conflict between the summary wording in this site and the current Psychology Board of Australia (PBA) English Language Skills Registration Standard, it is the current PBA standard that applies.

The Direct Entry Program (DEP) pathway is not accepted for this program.

Applicants who have not completed Grade 12 in Australia or have not completed six years of continuous education in a related field and recognised country must meet the AHPRA English language requirements. Please visit the Psychology Board of Australia website for further English language requirements information.

I am a clinical and health psychologist, and generally interested in the behavioural, emotional, cognitive and social components of health and wellbeing. My specific focus is active and resilient lifestyles among adults, including people with chronic health conditions. My qualifications and experience involve a unique and powerful combination of psychology and public health which enables me to work across mental and physical health settings, and individual-, organisational- and community-based approaches to understanding and changing behaviour. My research aligns with the United Nations defined Sustainable Development Goal of "Good Health & Wellbeing", in particular Target 3.4 to reduce mortality from non-communicable diseases through prevention and treatment, and promote mental health and well-being. My physical activity/exercise research aims to understand levels and patterns of participation, influences, and links with health and wellbeing. I design, deliver and evaluate change programs involving health coaching, lifestyle counseling and psychosocial resilience training. I provide behaviour change support for multi-disciplinary healthy lifestyle programs. I also have an emerging interest in sleep quality, beliefs and behaviours. My work includes adults aged 65+ years, employees, university students, people with physical or mental conditions (e.g., diabetes, cardiovascular disease, arthritis, depression/anxiety), and culturally and linguistically diverse people. I have published 160+ research outputs and been awarded ~$6million in research funding. I have worked in government (e.g., vocational and rehabilitation counseling), private practice (e.g., employee assistance) and hospital settings, and have 25+ years' experience in the university sector. Most of my work is in multidisciplinary teams related to e.g., medicine, allied health, public health, health promotion, behavioural medicine. My work has significant impact. I led research with local government to inform regional Physical Activity Strategy and Implementation Plans. I am the health psychology consultant to the Queensland Curriculum Assessment Authority for the endorsed Senior Health syllabus, and an invited member of the training team for secondary school teachers. I led three sections of the Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA) training manual on Exercise Prescription, Delivery and Adherence which is used in university programs across Australia. I was one of the four research consultants to Federal Government for the development of Australia's Physical Activity & Sedentary Behaviour Guidelines for Adults (18-64 years).

Ph.D. Clinical Psychology

Ut tyler psychology and counseling, ph.d. clinical psychology (underserved populations), program brochure.

Program Objectives and Goals

The Ph.D. program in clinical psychology at the University of Texas at Tyler is a scientist-practitioner based program which provides high quality academic, research, and clinical training with under-served populations.  Our focus is on training students to work with veterans, in rural mental health settings, and in geropsychology.   Training in cultural diversity issues is infused throughout the curriculum.  Students will receive additional courses and clinical training in these 3 emphasis areas during their time in the program.   Students are mentored by clinical faculty in research and provide supervision of their clinical work along the way.  A thesis and dissertation are required.  Clinical training is provided in our on-campus clinic and in a number of agencies in the East Texas area.  Students receive a stipend /financial aid package that allows them to focus on their academic and professional goals and involve research and teaching activities.   Upon completion of our program, students will be able to become licensed psychologists and work in a variety of academic, medical, or clinical settings.   Since we are a new Ph.D. program, we are in the process of seeking contingent accreditation from APA.  Our program objectives are as follows:

  • Program graduates are trained as scientist-practitioners who have a diverse knowledge of the scientific and behavioral foundations of psychology.
  • Program graduates are capable of developing, conducting, and reporting research knowledge through their own program of independent research.
  • Program graduates are competent to assess, diagnose, and treat psychological disorders using evidence based practices.
  • Program graduates are trained in ethics, diversity issues, and professional issues related to clinical practice and research.
  • Program graduates have additional clinical and research training in underserved populations such as with military veterans, older adults, and persons in rural settings.

Our program values diversity with respect to gender, ethnicity, age, religious beliefs, and/or sexual orientation. We do not discriminate based on these factors regarding program admission or completion.

Questions can be directed to Ceselie Tobin, MS, LPC graduate admissions advisor, or Dr. Dennis Combs , director.

IMPORTANT UPDATE:  All admissions materials are due by January 15th, 2024 for the Fall 2024 cohort.

Frequently Asked Questions Residency Requirement

The UT Tyler Clinical Psychology PhD program is designed as a full-time, five-year program, including four years on campus and an off-site, doctoral internship year.  It may take students an average of between 5-6 years to complete our program to allow for additional clinical training experiences and to make progress on dissertation requirements prior to the doctoral internship.   The program requires a minimum of 3 full-time academic years of graduate study, at least 2 of which is completed in this program, and requires 1 year in full-time in residence.  The PhD degree is awarded after all program requirements are completed and conferred after completion of the doctoral internship.

Program Format

The PhD program in Clinical Psychology is designed to be an in-person, face to face program.  We are not a fully on-line program and students must attend the program and classes in person.  In our program, the format for classes can vary by instructor which includes face to face, hybrid, and online formats.  We value in person learning as it provides for enhanced training and mentorship and results in a better student community.  Faculty can teach classes in different formats based on their needs and availability.   Practicum training is done in person with some provision for telesupervision and telehealth methods.  Teaching involves lectures, clinical and case examples, discussions, and electronically delivered methods to enhance learning.
