Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur

phd in arts india

The undergraduate courses offered by the discipline are thoughtfully constructed to introduce the most recent art-historical studies to a diverse group of students while familiarizing them with the materials and techniques of artmaking. The courses cover a wide range of topics such as the overview of the art of the Indian subcontinent and the West, Contemporary Indian Art, Modern Western Art, Chinese and Japanese cinema, American films, Art appreciation, and art criticism.

The postgraduate program in Fine Arts presents an inimitable opportunity to students with fine arts and art history backgrounds where they develop critical tools of analyzing artworks and habitual practices while situating their research in relation to the ongoing scholarship in the field alongside their art practice. The discipline is among a handful in India that promotes the simultaneity of art practice and art historical research in a Ph.D. program.

The enrolled Ph.D. students have access to the Fine Arts Lab to carry out individual and collective practices. The doctoral students are encouraged to participate in national and international conferences and workshops. The discipline also offers fully-funded postdoctoral positions. The applications are open all year round.

The doctoral studies in Fine Arts aim to bridge the long-standing gap between scholarship and professional studio practice in India and beyond.

Research Fields

The Doctorate in Politics and International Affairs specializes in the following four fields of research:

International Relations In the School of Interdisciplinary Global Studies, the International Relations (IR) faculty focuses on four areas of study: international relations theory, global political economy, international security, and human rights. We stress the importance of cutting-edge scholarship in our teaching of the graduate seminars as well as bridging the many emergent gaps in theory and practice in the various subfields that comprise International Relations, including American foreign policy, international ethics, global governance, and international law and organizations. One of our central aims is to advance innovative applications of the central theoretical perspectives (and their variant strands) in International Relations, namely, realism, liberalism, critical theory, constructivism, Marxism, international political theory, and gender. These applications involve in-depth theoretical and empirical analysis of key global issues, such as Asian security, moral accountability, the enforcement of human rights, immigration, and political and economic inequality. The International Relations faculty have published numerous books and peer-reviewed articles on these issue areas. These include monographs on the political tensions on the Korean Peninsula or North Korea’s nuclear arms buildup, the political cosmopolitan character and shifting dynamics of the International Criminal Court (ICC), hegemony and inequality in the global political economy, and China’s rapidly increasing support of intervention in African states. Together our published research emphasizes the production of critical theoretic knowledge, or the advanced methodological analysis of the contradictions and tensions informing the substantive debates in International Relations. This not only requires the particular mastery of concepts, methods, and claims but also an open-ended and historical understanding of the changing social forces shaping the behavior of states and the relations among global and local actors. It is this scholarly approach that we adopt to train our graduate students specializing in international relations, particularly as they advance their dissertation research and empirical knowledge of the global and regional contexts of problems and issues. One of the outcomes we strive for, then, is to encourage our doctoral students to develop rigorous theoretical and contextual analysis from which they can devise solutions and prescriptions to global issues.

Comparative Politics Comparative Politics in the School of Interdisciplinary Global Studies is committed to theory-driven, empirical research from an interdisciplinary perspective that is situated in a political, historical, cultural, and economic context.  The Comparative Politics faculty employ a variety of methodological approaches from both the social sciences and humanities, which utilize qualitative and quantitative research methods to study the patterns of similarities and differences. In particular, we conduct comparative and case study research to inquire into these patterns and to develop our theoretical propositions. One of our aims is to produce knowledge about the changing social, political, and legal conditions affecting the lives, development, cultural practices, and customs of underrepresented peoples. In meeting this aim, our research focuses on several themes of comparative politics, including social movements, democracy/democratization, citizenship, decolonization, genocide, hegemony, race and identity, development, legal systems and customary law, social justice, and indigenismo or the political ideology focusing on the changing relations of state and local peoples. Much of our published research draws creatively on social, critical, and political theory to advance knowledge of the laws, changing social relations, and attitudes in several countries, which includes Brazil, Ecuador, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Uganda, South Sudan, Ethiopia, and Iran. Our research strengths lie in the areas of race and citizenship, social movements theory, human security and law (or legal custom) in Eastern Africa, indigenous rights in various Latin American countries, and security relations in the Middle East. With these thematic foci, we encourage graduate students to create and develop their own research by selecting a region of the world as their emphasis and adopting theoretically informed research and comparative methods that allow them to analyze the changing social and political conditions in the countries of this region.

American Politics The study of American Politics in the doctorate program in politics and international affairs provides a comprehensive overview as well as an in-depth analysis of American politics. Our faculty focus on various aspects of American politics, including theoretical foundations, federalism, institutions (Congress, the executive branch, the bureaucracy, the judiciary), political behavior (political parties, the media, interest groups, social movements, and elections), and public policy (foreign and domestic), and employ a range of methodological approaches such as historical development, legal doctrine, institutional rules, and quantitative analyses of the behavior of political actors and the mass public, to advance the student's research skills.  Our core class, Seminar in American Politics, for instance, surveys the key foundations, institutions, and behavior in American politics, introducing students to both qualitative and quantitative methodological approaches for analyzing and testing the changing trends and outcomes in American politics. Special topics courses provide opportunities to gain in-depth knowledge on new research on a range of themes, including political development, the social bases of politics, and the global impact of American politics. The faculty in American politics have made important contributions in the areas of race and ethnicity, the judiciary, the presidency, Florida government, civil liberties, health care, environmental justice, economic inequality, and animal rights. Our strengths lie in economic inequality, animal rights, the Presidency, Judicial Behavior, Race and Ethnicity, and State and Local Government. In these specific areas, we have published several cutting-edge books and articles in leading peer-reviewed journals, which examine the emergence and implementation of nonhuman animals' regime of rights, the changing directions of the U.S. Federal Reserve Bank and its impact on world politics, and alternative strategies for natural disasters in the United States. Our scholarship is thus distinctive for the ways in which it addresses American government and politics in a global context. This is how we seek to train our doctoral students on the rapidly changing, nuanced linkages between local, state, federal and global institutional politics.

Political Theory Political Theory introduces students to the core normative issues in the study of political science. These normative issues provide the bedrock assumptions on which much of the study of political science depends. For example, while nearly everyone agrees that democracy is the best form of government, why do we place such faith in it? In addition, the long tradition of political thought offers multiple versions of democracy, each with its own strengths and limitations. How are we to identify the best version for our needs? Similarly, while we might extol non-violence in politics, is it always the best path for political movements? How are we to justify its alternatives? Clarifying our moral commitments, sharpening our conceptual tools, and outlining pathways for transforming theoretical knowledge into action requires philosophical, historical, and conceptual capabilities. The political theory faculty at the School of Interdisciplinary Global Studies trains students to develop these capabilities. To that end, political theory classes not only familiarize students with many of the canonical texts that were read by generations of prominent political thinkers (from Aristotle to Martin Luther King Jr), they also teach students to read these texts critically and with an eye towards contemporary political developments. As such, training in political theory is a critical supplement to graduate work at School of Interdisciplinary Global Studies. The faculty’s expertise in feminist theory, postcolonial theory, the role of emotions in politics, environmental political thought, and Indian political thought complements the terminal degrees offered in American Politics, Comparative Politics, and International Relations.

Financial Assistance

Most of our successful applicants qualify for funding offered by the department or the Office of Graduate Studies. Funded doctoral students will receive a graduate assistantship that includes:

  • a stipend for the academic year (9 months)
  • a tuition waiver (not including school fees)
  • the option of health insurance mostly paid by the department (the student only pays a small amount towards insurance).

All applicants for the doctoral degree are considered for a graduate assistantship - they do not need to complete a separate form.

The graduate assistantship is guaranteed for four years but is based on maintaining satisfactory annual academic progress. It requires each student to work 20 hours per week, in which case the student would be first assisting professors of the department with their teaching and class preparations and later, after having passed the doctoral comprehensive exams and completed teacher training seminars, teach a class at the University of South Florida.

Please visit the graduate assistantships page for further information. The department also provides funding for conference travel or the presentation of research at conferences upon approval.

Information on eligibility for graduate assistantships can be found on the Graduate Assistantships Resource Center website.

We also strive to fund our students in the fifth year, though this funding is not guaranteed. Depending on additional funds that become available, students may have the opportunity to extend their graduate assistantship to one, possibly two academic semesters. Students in the fifth year are also encouraged to seek external funding. For more information on this, please consult our Graduate Resources Page .

Outstanding candidates may also be nominated by the school’s director and/or graduate committee for prestigious and highly competitive university fellowships, including the Presidential Doctoral Fellowship , the Dorothy Auzenne Fellowship , and the University Graduate Fellowship. There is also the opportunity for minority students to be awarded a McKnight Fellowship, which provides annual tuition up to $5,000 for each of three academic years, plus an annual stipend of $12,000. The program also offers travel grants and other forms of financial support. For additional information on this fellowship opportunity, please visit the McKnight Fellowship's informational page.

Building community through the gsas career fellows program.

Louis Brandeis Statue on Brandeis campus, with steps leading up to it

April 29, 2024

Abigail Arnold | Graduate School of Arts and Sciences

While graduate school is a notoriously busy place, it’s always a good choice to make time to think about career planning and the future. The Brandeis University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Professional Development team supports students through this often tricky process through a variety of programming and services, including the Career Fellows Program . Now in its third year, the program brings together students across departments who are committed to career exploration, building a cohort who connect with each other while attending a range of professional development workshops, informational talks, and networking sessions. This year, thirty students, who were selected from sixty-seven total applicants, participated in the program. Fifteen students came from the sciences, and fifteen came from the humanities, social sciences, and creative arts. Session topics included approaching career exploration, the job search for international students, faculty careers, AI careers, optimizing LinkedIn, resumes and CVs, informational interviewing, and interviewing. Marika McCann, Associate Director of Professional Development and Employer Outreach for GSAS, explained the process of developing this year’s programming and building on previous work. “Last year we sent out a survey to fellows to get feedback and see what areas we should focus on this year. We wanted to prioritize AI, as we had many questions about careers in these areas, and held a session that talked about interdisciplinary AI careers,” she said. “We also listened to feedback and added more sessions specifically for international students about the job search.” Along with GSAS Faculty Director of Professional Development Jonathan Anjaria, McCann also worked to make sure that the programming was helpful to students no matter what program they were in. “For our informational interviewing session we provided a variety of alumni contacts to our students in different careers that span across disciplines,” she said. “We have focused on bringing in professionals in industry, academia and nonprofits to help build connections.” In putting together the career fellows programming, McCann and Anjaria worked to bring students together, as well as to get them started on a journey of career exploration. “We prioritized having a few in-person casual lunches with students to get to know each other,” said McCann. She also explained why she thinks the program is so important: “The skills we are teaching in our fellows program are essential for graduate students in their job search, and, unfortunately, many aren't gaining these skills early enough in their graduate career. By learning the building blocks of career exploration and the job search earlier on, they are getting more time to practice these skills and connect with those outside of their programs and are better prepared for when they graduate and are ready for the next step in their career.” Students at all stages of their graduate careers had words of praise for the career fellows programming and what they learned from it. Derrick Kim, a first-year PhD student in Computer Science, said, “I think it's important to talk to people in other disciplines, especially if we have more opportunities to talk about our research interests and what we are doing. I think it would be nice to distill our research into a form where someone who has no idea about the field can understand. As a PhD student, I think we are tempted to overspecialize, but when we go out in the real world, we struggle to simplify our research so that people from other disciplines can easily understand.” He appreciated the chance to network with fellow students and alums across programs, saying, “I think it's better to build a stronger alumni network – as Marika said, 70% of jobs are gotten through connections. I think this is a safe arena to develop good social skills and talk to people from different disciplines.” Kwame Gayle, a first-year PhD student in Sociology, agreed about the importance of community building. He said, “I liked the networking lunches throughout the semester, where I could get to meet other graduate students on campus…Through the fellowship, I have built connections with other graduate students and alumni across different fields.” Gayle highlighted the importance of using these interpersonal connections to advance one’s career and personal journeys, saying, “Community is vital as you navigate graduate school. The more spaces you're able to build community, the better! Career development programming creates a space for like minded individuals (students and alumni) to connect and have future engagement. It is also a window into the possibilities which helps to keep current students grounded and hopeful. Lastly, it challenges the narrative that life stops in grad school; rather, you can continue to build connections as your career progresses throughout graduate school as well.” Jiahua Chen, a fourth-year PhD student in Biochemistry and Biophysics, was excited about the ways in which the program helped her answer her questions about finding and preparing for a career after graduation. “The Career Fellows program seemed like the perfect place to find the answers to my three ‘how’ questions that had been wandering in my heart for some time: How to find my first matching job? How to translate my current skills into tangible advantages in the workplace? How to align my skill set with the demands of a prospective position?” she said. She also liked how the program walked her through the career exploration process, saying, “As a fellow, I have acquired multiple skills in a step-by-step and build-up manner, from pinpointing my career goals/positions to structuring resumes, navigating job searching social media platforms, and conducting interviews.” Lianne Gallant, a first-year PhD student in History, liked how the program allowed her to begin her career planning process early in her graduate student career. “As the academic job market becomes increasingly difficult, an increasing number of graduate students are planning for industry positions after graduation and I believe institutions have an obligation to prepare us for that, something GSAS and the Career Center at Brandeis have done really well,” she said. “I try to think of graduate school as an entry-level job and a key part of that is to develop a sense of our professional selves as early as possible.” Gallant particularly appreciated the session on teaching at community colleges and their focus on teaching over research; she said, “So much of the academic job market often focuses on research experience and publications and it's nice to know that there are other options.” Both Kim and Chen especially liked the LinkedIn session, for which McCann and Anjaria brought in Omar Garriott and Jeremy Schifeling, previous leaders of the LinkedIn Education team. “It was highly beneficial to hear about LinkedIn insights and tips from the previous leader of the LinkedIn education team, Jeremy Schifeling, who worked at LinkedIn and knew the LinkedIn story ‘behind the scenes,’” said Chen. “I got to hear important things that recruiters wanted to see on a resume,” added Kim. Through the career fellows program, the GSAS Professional Development team gives students the opportunity to learn from staff, from alums, from outside experts, and from their peers. By taking a process that can feel scary and providing guidance and steps for how to approach it, the program sets GSAS students up for success.

Biden forgives $6.1 billion in student debt for 317,000 borrowers. Here's who qualifies for relief.

By Aimee Picchi

Edited By Alain Sherter

May 1, 2024 / 10:59 AM EDT / CBS News

The Biden administration is forgiving $6.1 billion in student debt for 317,000 people who attended The Art Institutes, a for-profit chain of schools that shut down last fall amid allegations of fraud.

The latest effort represents President Joe Biden's plan to tackle the nation's $1.7 trillion in student debt after the Supreme Court last year  blocked  his administration's plan for broad-based college loan forgiveness.

The Art Institutes, which operated branches in cities including Atlanta, Fort Worth, New York and Tampa, shut down permanently in September after the Department of Education found it had misrepresented its graduates' employment rates and salaries. Hundreds of thousands of students had taken out billions in loans to attend the schools, but "got little but lies in return," U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona said in a statement  on Wednesday.

"We must continue to protect borrowers from predatory institutions — and work toward a higher education system that is affordable to students and taxpayers," Cardona added.

In a separate statement,  Mr. Biden said his administration has forgiven $29 billion in debt for 1.6 million students "whose colleges took advantage of them, closed abruptly or were covered by related court settlements."

In conjunction with its previously announced debt relief , the Biden administration said it has forgiven a total of more than $160 billion for nearly 4.6 million borrowers, a number that includes today's announcement.

In the case of The Art Institutes, the Education Department's investigation found that the company falsely claimed that 80% of its graduates found jobs in their fields of study within six months of graduation. In reality, the figure never rose above 57%, the department said.

The school also allegedly misrepresented its graduates' earnings and annualized the estimated incomes of grads who were in temporary jobs. For example, One campus included the annual income of tennis star Serena Williams, who  had attended  the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, in calculating grads' average income, the department said.

The Art Institutes closed suddenly in September, impacting 1,700 students, according to the New York Times. The closure came after the organization settled for $95.5 million with federal regulators , who had accused it of fraud. Other campuses operated by the school had shut down in 2019 or earlier, according to the The Art Institutes' website.

Who qualifies for this student loan forgiveness?

The Education Department said it is automatically forgiving $6.1 billion in student debt for 317,000 people who borrowed money to attend any Art Institutes campus on or after January 1, 2004, through October 16, 2017.

Do borrowers need to take any actions?

No, borrowers don't need to do anything, the Education Department said.

The department will start notifying eligible borrowers on May 1 that they have been approved for their debt to be discharged.

Do borrowers need to continuing making payments?

The Education Department said it will immediately pause loans identified for discharge, meaning that borrowers should not have to make additional payments.

"This ensures that they will not face any further financial demands from these loans during the time needed to process their discharges," the agency added.

Psychology Ph.D. candidate advances to UCOP Grad Slam Finals

Shannon Brady, a fifth-year Ph.D. candidate in Developmental Psychology, has been named the 2024 finalist at the UCR Grad Slam Finals, a UC-wide competition for graduate students to present their research or creative projects with opportunities and workshops for professional development. As UCR’s campus winner, Shannon earned a grand prize of $5000 through a fellowship and will move on to compete in the UCOP Grad Slam Finals on May 3 at LinkedIn’s headquarters in San Francisco with a chance to win upwards of $7000.

“It’s still so surreal,” Brady said. “I’ve always loved to tell other people about myself and the work that I do…but it’s rare that I get to share my work with the broader community.”

Brady’s winning presentation, “Thinking Out Loud: Is Self-Talk a Secret to Success?” delves into the impact of self-talk on children’s emotional well-being, aiming to challenge negative misconceptions of self-talk by highlighting its benefits.

According to Brady, being named the UCR Grad Slam finalist opens doors for her research and development by potentially using some of the winnings to compensate participants who contribute to her project and raise public awareness by publishing papers and speaking at conferences.

“It's really gratifying to see Shannon's hard work paying off,” said Elizabeth Davis, Brady’s faculty advisor and an associate professor of psychology at UCR. “Her creative dissertation study is high-quality research, and seeing her distill the complex ideas from that project down to just a couple of minutes is so impressive!”

Brady previously participated in UCR’s 2023 Grad Slam but didn’t place. However, the opportunity allowed Brady to pivot and grow her presentation skills. She has also grown her passion for science communication to discussing psychology with others.

Along with the upcoming UCOP Grad Slam Finals, Brady looks forward to continuing sharing her research project. “A big piece of my dissertation project is to help change the narrative that people hold about the act of talking to oneself, so I’m most excited about getting another opportunity to share my work with a new audience,” she said.

Beyond Grad Slam, Brady is excited to get started on her research project this summer by making visits to labs that study children to look at data and collect information for her research.

“Bigger picture, I’m excited to continue finding new ways to share my work with the community and other people who can benefit from applying psychology in their everyday lives,” she said.

“Shannon is on a very impressive scientific trajectory already, and will undoubtedly continue to impress her colleagues in the last year of her training,” Davis said. “After she's done at UCR and has earned her Ph.D., I foresee a bright future conducting and disseminating research to broad audiences.”

The UCOP Grad Slam Finals will be available to watch online via live stream at the UCOP Grad Slam website on May 3.

Police Arrest 3 in Slaying of Sikh Leader That Shocked Canada

The killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Sikh nationalist who had sought a separate state in India and was viewed as a terrorist by New Delhi, set off diplomatic tensions between Canada and India.

A demonstration with flags as well as signs reading, “Shaheed Nijjar is still alive in our hearts” and “Canada stand with Justin Trudeau.”

By Vjosa Isai

Reporting from Victoria, British Columbia

Three Indian men were charged in the brazen slaying of a Sikh separatist on Canadian soil, the police said on Friday, a killing that set off a diplomatic clash with New Delhi after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau blamed “agents of the government of India” for orchestrating the shooting.

India’s government called the claim “absurd” and took steps that led Canada to withdraw more than 40 of its diplomats from the country. But amid the denials, Canada said it had a “smoking gun,” supported by information from the United States. And a federal indictment in New York linked the Indian government to another murder-for-hire-plot against another Sikh separatist.

The three men were arrested in Edmonton, Alberta, and charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder in the killing of the Sikh nationalist, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, in June, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said. The suspects — Karan Brar, 22; Kamalpreet Singh, 22; and Karanpreet Singh, 28 — had been living in Canada for three to five years but were not permanent residents of Canada, the police said.

“This investigation does not end here,” Superintendent Mandeep Mooker, head of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team for the Mounties, said at a news conference on Friday. “We are aware that others may have played a role in this homicide, and we remain dedicated to finding and arresting each one of these individuals.”

Several other investigations are ongoing, including into any possible involvement by the Indian government in Mr. Nijjar’s killing, Assistant Commissioner David Teboul said at the news conference. He also said, without providing further details, that the relationship with India in investigating the killing had been challenging.

The arrests were the culmination of an investigation into a shooting that shocked Canada and put Sikhs in the country on edge. Over the past year, the Canadian police investigating Mr. Nijjar’s death had released little information on their progress, other than a map outlining the getaway vehicle’s route and some grainy images of the assailants’ silver Toyota Camry.

Mr. Nijjar, 45, was in the parking lot of the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara in Surrey, British Columbia, where he had been president, when three masked men ambushed and shot him dead on June 18.

A Canadian citizen , he was born in Punjab and moved to Canada in the heat of India’s crackdown on Sikh leaders in the 1990s, according to Indian media reports. He had been a leader in the local Khalistan movement, which has long sought a separate Sikh nation that includes the northern Indian state of Punjab. Surrey, a city outside Vancouver, is home to one of the largest Sikh populations in Canada.

The Indian government has labeled Mr. Nijjar as a terrorist and had called for his arrest. And the Mounties had warned Mr. Nijjar and several other Sikhs about threats to their lives.

During a foreign-interference inquiry last month established to investigate allegations that India and Canada had interfered in Canadian elections , Jagmeet Singh, leader of the federal New Democratic Party who represents a British Columbia district, testified that he, too had been warned by the police of potential threats against his life.

The public killing of Mr. Nijjar heightened diplomatic tensions between Canada and India after Mr. Trudeau bluntly accused India of being behind the killing. He said he had based his accusation on intelligence gathered by the Canadian government.

Though the United States was wary of undermining its relations with India, which it sees as an important global partner, U.S. intelligence agencies had offered their Canadian counterparts information that helped Canada reach that conclusion. But allied officials said that Canada itself had hit upon the “smoking gun”: the intercepted communications of Indian diplomats in Canada indicating involvement in the plot.

Mr. Trudeau told the House of Commons in September that he had “in no uncertain terms” raised India’s involvement in the shooting directly with Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India at the Group of 20 summit that month.

The Indian government strongly denied the accusation, and proceeded to revoke the immunity of 41 Canadian diplomats in India in November , forcing Canada to withdraw two-thirds of its diplomats based out of that country. Mélanie Joly, the Canadian foreign minister, said the move violated international law.

Then, federal prosecutors in Manhattan revealed what they said was a separate murder-for-hire plot in the United States against another Sikh activist. A federal indictment filed in Manhattan accused an Indian national in an assassination scheme targeting Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a dual American and Canadian citizen living in New York and has been outspoken in calling for a Sikh-majority homeland.

The plot had been organized by an Indian government official who was also involved in the killing of Mr. Nijjar, according to the unsealed indictment. Nikhil Gupta, an Indian national, was later arrested in the Czech Republic in connection with the U.S. scheme. Mr. Gupta boasted of his criminal links to an undercover agent whom he thought was an assassin and offered him $100,000, officials said.

In December, sources told The Globe and Mail, a Canadian newspaper, that arrests were imminent. But the passing months had left some in the community concerned that the anniversary of Mr. Nijjar’s death would go by without a resolution.

“We would not be at this point without the bravery and the courage of the Sikh community coming forward,” Superintendent Mooker said at the news conference. He also said that the police would release photos of the three suspects to gather more information about their presence in Surrey at the time of the shooting.

Posters celebrating Mr. Nijjar, who members of the temple view as a martyr for the Khalistani cause, are still displayed throughout and around the building. Dozens of people gathered for a community lunch on Friday afternoon, and to hear an update from the temple leadership, who said in an official statement that they are committed to furthering the causes that Mr. Nijjar “laid his life for.”

But Balpreet Singh Boparai, a Toronto-based lawyer at the World Sikh Organization of Canada, said the arrests announced on Friday would most likely provide little comfort to Sikhs there if those implicated in the killing and other interference activities were not also held accountable.

“We just hope that Canada has the guts to be transparent and identify those individuals who are behind this plot,” he said.

Mihika Agarwal contributed reporting from Surrey, British Columbia.

Meet the speakers honoring 2024 doctoral, master’s degree recipients

During the Arts & Sciences Graduate Studies Hooding and Recognition Ceremony on May 10, students Chukwuebuka Ibeh and Macy Sprunger will join alumnus Felix Brandon Lloyd, MFA ‘08, in addressing the Class of 2024.

Here, the speakers reflect on their time at WashU, their hopes for the future, and their wishes for the graduating class.

Master’s Student Speaker: Chukwuebuka Ibeh

phd in arts india

Chukwuebuka Ibeh was thrilled when he was accepted to the English department’s MFA program for creative writing. “It happens to be one of the best in the United States, and I was very lucky to be accepted,” he said.

Originally from Port Harcourt, Nigeria, Ibeh came to St. Louis in 2022 to attend WashU. Before that, he had studied creative writing under Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Dave Eggers, and Tash Aw at Adichie’s workshop in Nigeria, where he was one of just 22 writers selected to participate. Electric Literature profiled Ibeh as one of the “most promising new voices of Nigerian fiction” and he was named a runner-up for the 2021 J.F. Powers Prize for fiction. His work has been published by McSweeney’s, The New England Review of Books, and Lolwe.

When he arrived at WashU, Ibeh fell in love with the architecture, passing time with walks around campus. During his time in the MFA program, he enjoyed participating in workshops where exchanges with colleagues helped him refine his work.

He plans to speak to the Class of 2024 about growth, change, and the need to take risks and be “audacious.” He’ll also focus on the importance of self-belief.

When he takes the stage in May, it won’t be the first time he’s addressed his fellow students. In 2023, Ibeh delivered the TEDxWUSTL talk " What are African values? " about the tension between inclusivity and a sense of African authenticity. That experience was a profound source of inspiration for him, one he believes will endure long after he departs WashU.

He already has a lot to look forward to. A month after graduation, his first novel, “ Blessings ,” will be published in eight territories and four languages. “I’m excited to see what path it takes,” he said of his book. "It’s been a long time coming, and it feels so near now."

Doctoral Student Speaker: Macy Sprunger

phd in arts india

A native of Iowa, Macy Sprunger wanted to stay in the Midwest to pursue her PhD in chemistry. But what ultimately sold her on WashU was the people. “When I visited the chemistry department in 2017, it felt very welcoming,” she said.

Sprunger found a mentor in Meredith Jackrel , an assistant professor of chemistry who studies proteins involved in ALS. “We started here at the same time,” Sprunger said. “It was exciting to join a lab that was just beginning.”

Sprunger felt so at home in Jackrel’s lab that she never left. After finishing her PhD last December, she became a staff scientist, a role that allows her to continue her research while mentoring current students.

As a biochemist who studies proteins with important medical implications, Sprunger often collaborates with researchers across WashU. She’s in close contact with researchers at the Hope Center for Neurological Disorders who work directly with ALS patients carrying the same mutations she studies in the lab. “One thing I’ve always appreciated about the university is my ability to make connections across departments,” she said.

WashU’s world-class equipment doesn’t hurt, either. Sprunger fondly remembers many hours spent peering through powerful microscopes to better understand the structure of proteins. “The equipment here opens up all sorts of possibilities to ask new questions,” she said. “Every time they trained me on a microscope and let me run it myself I thought, ‘Are you sure you trust me to do this?’ But I've grown more confident over the years.”

In her remarks, Sprunger will address the importance of active learning in all areas of life. “We might be moving on from academics, but we’re not done learning,” she said. “I had a son a year and a half ago, and I’ve been learning a lot about myself and figuring out how to be a mom.”

Alumni Speaker: Felix Brandon Lloyd

phd in arts india

Felix Brandon Lloyd, MFA ‘08, believes in the power of storytelling. As he prepares to address the Class of 2024, Lloyd said he will focus on the art of narrative, a skill honed during his time at WashU. “Storytelling has always been a part of the journey to being an entrepreneur,” he said.

In 2012, Lloyd co-founded Zoobean with his wife Jordan Lloyd Bookey. Together, they sought to provide curated reading materials to families and strengthen children's literacy. Following a 2014 appearance on "Shark Tank" and an investment from Mark Cuban, the company subtly shifted its focus to helping librarians and educators motivate communities to read through the use of gamification techniques. Schools and public libraries across the country, including the St. Louis Public Library and the St. Louis County Library, use their website and mobile apps.

As a fiction writer in the English department’s MFA program, Lloyd participated in workshops where he learned to listen deeply and accept feedback on his work, lessons he uses today as Zoobean’s CEO.

Though Lloyd came to WashU to become a writer, he also got his first taste of pitching a startup during his time on campus. He entered the  Skandalaris Venture Competition  with a business plan for a financial education game for children. “I think I won that pitch competition, in part, because I knew how to tell a good story,” he said. “Part of selling your business early is giving people a vision when you don’t yet have it all baked out.”

One of Lloyd’s messages to graduates will be the importance of following their career wherever it takes them, even if it’s not part of their initial plan. “I didn’t win a Pulitzer or write a bestselling novel — at least not yet,” he said. “But it’s a wonderful journey. Part of what happens after commencement day is embracing what comes next.”
