What is robotics?

  • Robotics is the combination of engineering, science and technology that produces a machine called robot.
  • Robotics is a domain where people work with the development and use of robots.
  • It is mostly used as an alternative of human beings in various works.
  • Robotics mainly deals with the design construction and operation of a robot and the computer systems for their control, feedback and information processing.
  • It is a machine that is programmed to perform the given tasks and gather information from its surroundings.
  • It works from a central microprocessor that helps to control the movements and they have sensors to sense the environment .

Why robotics ?

The main purpose of robotics is to automate operations that humans do and replace them with machines that can do the work with better accuracy. As we know robotics is fully automated, it can process the dangerous and mundane jobs from humans with high productivity.

While a human be able to do a piece of work at some speed we can definitely design a robot to do the same piece of work better, faster, economical and environmentally friendly . Because of its long run it can free humans from dangerous, repetitive and annoying jobs.

Robotics PPT:

Laws of robotics:.

Asimov proposed three laws of robotics, they are:

Law 1:   A robot may not injure a human being or through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm

Law 2: A robot must obey orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the first law

Law 3: A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the first law.

Types of robots ?

Robots are used in various sectors. some of the important sectors and the types used there are as follows

presentation about robots ppt

1. Industrial Robots

Various works such as Welding, material Handling, Improving Productivity, Inspection are carried out by robots.

There are various types of industrial robots as below:

  • Articulated
  • Cylindrical

2. Mobile Robots

Robots that move around legs, tracks or wheels. There are types of robots that can even handle radio active material. Types of mobile robots are

  • Land based wheeled, tracked, legged robots
  • Air based robots –plane, Helicopter
  • Water based – Submarines
  • Combinational robots

3. Educational Robots

Robots that are used in education. They are abled to bring schools to students who cannot be able to present Physically.

Types of educational robots are:

  • Dash and dot
  • Mbot

4. Domestic Robots

There are two types one is to perform household tasks and the other one is modern toy that performs tasks like talking, walking etc .

Components of robots:

Manipulator.

The arm of the robot is called as manipulator. It resemble the human hand. It has several joints and links.

End effectors

End effectors are used by robots to interact with the environment. They vary according to the task given to the robot. It performs the tasks that are performed by palm and fingers of human hand

Sensors are used to gather information from the surroundings. If camera is present Visual representation of the surroundings can be seen. Microphones allows to detect the surrounding sounds. If the robot is equipped with thermometer and barometer temperature and pressure can be found out. These informations are used to guide the robotics behaviour.

Inside the body of a robot small motor is present known as actuators. Robot moves in reaction to feedback from sensors with the help of actuators.

The controller is the brain of a robot. Both the hardware and software are the controllers of the robot. The controller controls the movement of the manipulator and end effector.

Power supply

The main source of power supply for robots are batteries and photovoltaic cells. Lead acid and silver cadmium batteries are mostly preferred. Industrial and manufacturing robots are consuming an average of 21000 kWh annually. In future it may be designed such as a robot may charge by itself when the power is low.

presentation about robots ppt

Components of robots

Advantages of Robotics:

  • No human intervention.
  • Faster, precise and accurate.
  • They can work 24*7 , so productivity increases.
  • They can perform multitasking. So manpower gets reduced.
  • They work in dangerous tasks, the risk of human health and safety is reduced.
  • There is minimal risk if any failure occurs.

Disadvantages of Robotics:

  • There are replacing human beings in many places which leads to widespread unemployment.
  • They are costly to built.
  • There is lack of emotions and conscience.
  • They don’t have on the spot decision making capability, they act only as they programmed. When an unexpected situation arises it would be difficult for a robot to go through it.

Future prospects of robotics:

Many industries have started using robotic technology such as automotive, defence, pharmaceuticals , textiles, atomic energy etc. experts says that a moment may come when robots becomes smarter than humans.

At present robots can rotate base of arm, bend elbow, rotate wrist etc. In future it may look, feel and act like humans. Realistic looking skins and hair can be fitted which allows the robot to react naturally in the environment.

Engineering… designed to work wonders

Engineers have used robots to create many technologies that students see every day, a number of which are shown in the lesson's PowerPoint presentation. In the activity, students are asked to design a program to solve a problem as if they are engineers. To conclude, students are asked to think creatively about ways they could use robots to solve problems. Through this lesson and activity, students build a basic understanding of robotics through looking at how engineers have used them.

After this lesson, students should be able to:

  • Define what a robot is.
  • Describe the main components of a robot.
  • Explain how the LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 robot can be programmed to move.
  • Explain how engineers apply robotics to solve real-world problems.

Educational Standards Each TeachEngineering lesson or activity is correlated to one or more K-12 science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) educational standards. All 100,000+ K-12 STEM standards covered in TeachEngineering are collected, maintained and packaged by the Achievement Standards Network (ASN) , a project of D2L (www.achievementstandards.org). The What Is a Robot? Presentation PowerPoint file provides the content material for this lesson. Refer to the text in the Lesson Background section to for how to introduce the material, slide by slide.

The lesson PowerPoint presentation provides great examples and is designed to provide a basic introduction to robotics prior to programming the LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 systems. This lesson also introduces the basic characteristics found in all robots, including sensors, inputs, processing and outputs, using the LEGO robot as an example.

To bring it all together, the associate activity introduces the concept of how precise commands to a robot need to be in order to make sure the robot does exactly what is expected of it.

Lesson Background and Concepts for Teachers

Use the What Is a Robot? Presentation (PowerPoint slides) to teach the lesson. Another set of PowerPoint slides that is attached to the associated activity, " Activity: Understanding Communications with a Robot ," is for the second day of this combined lesson and activity. Use the guidance below for what to expect in each slide and how to use it to teach the lesson and activity. In advance, make copies of the pre/post assessment sheets.

What is a Robot? (Slides 1-16 of Lesson Presentation)

  • Tell the students: What is a robot? Today we will be talking about robots and learning how to work with robots.
  • Hand out copies of the pre-assessment sheet (slide 2). Give students five minutes to fill them out. The answers are on slide 3.
  • Use slides 4-5 to clear popular culture-driven misconceptions about what robots are and what they do. Then, define what a robot is using slide 6. Emphasize how engineers have used robots to make our lives easier with the examples given in the slide including automatic doors, industrial robots, and automatic car washes. Depending on time, show a couple of videos from those listed on slide 7.
  • Introduce the LEGO EV3 with slide 8 and let students know that the name of the particular robot that they will be working with is called the "taskbot," which is shown on the slide.
  • Introduce the first main component of robots, the computer, using slides 9-10. Before moving on, make sure students understand that when you refer to a computer, you are not talking about a desktop computer! Instead, you are talking about a small computer chip, such as is found in anything with a digital screen (digital clock, digital thermostat, digital microwave, etc.) as well as in cars, video game consoles, and even inside a desktop computer! The chip inside a desktop "computer" is actually the real computer. This is also known as the processor.
  • With slide 11, introduce the computer "intelligent brick" of the LEGO EV3 robot. The main purpose of this slide is to get them familiar with the term "EV3 computer brick."
  • WIth slide 12, introduce the second important component of a robot: inputs. Continue with the example of a desktop computer, this time talking about the mouse and keyboard as inputs.
  • With slide 13, introduce the inputs of the EV3. The EV3 has four input ports at the bottom of the computer brick. A variety of sensors can be used as inputs to the EV3 brick. The standard EV3 kit comes with a touch sensor, a color sensor, an ultrasonic sensor and a rotation sensor. Additional and more advanced sensors are also available.
  • With slide 14, introduce the third component of a robot: outputs. Use a personal computer monitor as another example. Again, make sure students understand that the actual computer is a small chip that sends output to the monitor. Another example is a robot motor. The computer chip of a robot sends its output to the motors of the robot.
  • Looking at slide 15, talk about the outputs of the  computer brick. The output ports are located at the top of the brick and they send output signals to motors or the EV3 lamp.
  • Slide 16 is a summary of the lesson content. Review the basic components of robots to make sure students have a grasp of the material before conducting the associated activity.
  • Understanding Communication with a Robot - Student teams act out robot instructions and then program a LEGO EV3 taskbot to go through a simple maze. Through the human and robot examples, students see that a robot's computer simply follows instructions as given, thus one must be logical and precise with programming instruction. They also see how robot sensors are used to perform movement tasks.

(Use this closure at lesson end or after completion of the associated activity. The goal is to verify that students understand the three main robot components: computer, inputs and outputs. Use a real-world engineering example to ask students to think about these components, such as the example below, an automatic door at a grocery store.)

An automatic door at a grocery store is an everyday example of a robot that engineers have designed to make our lives easier. What are some ways the automatic door makes peoples' lives easier? (Possible answers: A person carrying many bags does not have to put down the bags to open the door. More people can go through the door more quickly. A person in a wheelchair can enter/exit more easily. An employee can push in a long line of carts without having to hold the door.)

What are three things that an automatic door would need to have in order to be a robot? (Answer: Output, computer and input.)

Let's see if it has those three things. What is the output of the automatic door? (Answer: A motor makes the door open.)

What does the computer do? (Answer: It takes in an input that tells it a person is approaching the door, and when it receives this input, it opens the door.)

Now, I want you to think like an engineer. Let's look at the sensors we have with the EV3 robot and think about how we could use each one to sense a person approaching the door so the computer knows to open it.

Touch sensor : How might you use a touch sensor to let the computer know a person is approaching the door? (Answer: You could put a touch sensor on the ground to walk on. Or make a wall button like the handicap buttons often placed on nearby walls.)]

Color sensor : How would you use a color sensor? (Answer: You could direct a beam of light across the path to the door pointed at the sensor. When somebody walks through the beam, the color sensor would sense that the beam was broken and open the door.)

Ultrasonic sensor : What does the ultrasonic sensor do? (Answer: It sends out high-frequency sounds that you cannot hear and senses when they reflect back from objects. In this way, it can tell the distance to an object.) How might you use an ultrasonic sensor to let you know when someone is approaching the door? (Answer: Point the sensor in front of the door and when a person approaches, the distance to the nearest object would be the distance to that person. When that person is a specified distance from the door, the computer could sense it and open the door.)

(Note: The provided answers are just possible ways that the EV3 sensors could be used in automatic doors, and students may come up with other solutions that would work. Encourage them to think creatively about the challenge. You might also ask them what problems they see with these solutions. This is the way engineers would approach this challenge, looking for a wide range of possible solutions and eventually deciding on the best solution for a given situation.)

Pre-Lesson Assessment

Before beginning the lesson, administer the three-question Pre-Lesson Assessment Sheet (also slide 2). Answers are provided in slide 3.

Post-Lesson Assessment

After conducting the associated activity, administer the three-question Post-Lesson Assessment Sheet (same as the pre-lesson assessment) to make sure that students understand what a robot is and how detailed they must be in writing robot instructions. Compare pre/post answers to assess student progress.

Here we talk about Robotics and we provide a free editable ppt for your studies, classes, and seminars. You can download the Robotics PPT from the bottom of this page. This Robotics PPT contains 20 beautiful slides with relevant images and notes to take a 30 minutes class or seminar.

What do we mean by Robotics? Well, many definitions are available on the internet. Let’s break down the term robotics. Basically, robotics includes designing, programming, and operating of robots. In simple words, it’s the process of making a robot from scratch. As we all know, robotics aims to deliver machines and robots that reduce human effort. For instance, let’s take a car manufacturing unit where individual components are manufactured and assembled. You might have seen in videos that robots assisting humans in assembling, painting, and inspecting vehicle parts.

Robotics PPT Content and Topics

Here are the main topics that we are discussing in Robotics PPT. Each section is explained with the help of diagrams and notes. These topics are covered in the Free downloadable Robotics PPT.

1. What do we mean by Robotics? 2. Why is Robotics important? 3. Application Of Robots 4. Robotic Aspects 5. History Of Robotics 6. Types of Robots

Why is Robotics Important?

In these modern days, we need to fast as possible. There will be a limit in productivity if human works. We get tired after a couple of hours and need a break. But in the case of robots, they can work continuously with less supervision. These qualities make robots and robotics a necessity in this fast-growing world.

History of Robotics

Let’s have a look at the history of robotics. Mr. Norbert Wiener formulated the basic principles of cybernetics in 1948. It was the basis of practical robotics for the first time. He just opened the door to modern robotics in the early 1950s. In the second half of the 20th century, fully autonomous robots started to appear. A digitally operating robot “Unimate” was built in 1961. It was the very first digitally operated robot. The robot used to pick hot pieces of metal from a die casting machine and stack them. It took a long time to develop the robots that we see today in real life. There was many ups and down where people failed and succeeded in making robots.

Application of Robotics and Robots

Robotics PPT

As we can see, robots are widely used in manufacturing, assembling, packing, transport, earth and space exploration, mining, safety, and the mass production of consumer and industrial goods like cars, electrical items, toys, mobile phones, laptops, etc.

One of the advantages of robots is they can work continuously without making any errors. Moreover, they can work in challenging environmental conditions like space, underwater, high-temperature zones, radioactive zone, etc. Also, robots are used in the inspection of radioactive materials, bomb detection, and deactivation where humans cannot survive.

Type of Robots

Robots come in different sizes and shapes. Each of them is unique and designed to perform a certain number of tasks faster and efficiently than humans. Here we will see the type of robots and how they are operating. The complexity of robots varies depending on the program and design of the robots. There are robots do simple task like moving components from one destination to another. Also, some robots can think and make decisions independently with the help of artificial intelligence. For example, Sophia is a humanoid robot that can interact with humans.

Pre-Programmed Robots

As we said earlier, there are different types of robots and used to get specific work done. The regular robots that we see are pre-programmed robots. They are designed in such a way to perform pre-defined work using a computer program. Pre-programmed robots are used for simple and repetitive tasks like welding, assembling parts, or just picking components and moving them to other destinations. Pre-programmed robots are mainly employed to perform tasks faster, efficiently, and accurately than humans. These pre-programmed robots can work extensively without any issues. Robots that fall under this category are specially designed to do simple and monotonous tasks. An example of a pre-programmed robot is a mechanical arm on an automotive assembly line.

Humanoid Robots

You might have seen humanoid robots in movies like Enthiran and I, Robot that looks the same as humans and behaves like humans. They are called humanoid robots. They can do everything just like humans. For instance, they can speak, run, walk, jump, and think independently. Humanoid robots are heavily complex and programmed with algorithms. They can have the same kind of emotions and expressions on their face. Hanson Robotics’ Sophia and Boston Dynamics’ Atlas are the two prominent humanoid robots ever made.

Autonomous Robots

Autonomous robots are robots that can operate independently without any supervision. These robots are designed to work in open environments where it uses a sensor to move and do the tasks. One of the best examples of autonomous robots is the Mi Robot Vacuum-Mop P, which uses a sensor to move around and clean the home.

Tele-operated Robots

Teleoperated robots are the type of robots controlled by humans with a remote or a controller. The instructions are sent to the robot in real-time, and these robots are capable of following the instructions. Teleoperated robots can work in extreme geographical conditions, weather, and circumstances.

Augmenting Robots

Augmented robots are commonly used to bring back abilities that humans may have lost. For instance, a robotic prosthetic limb is a good example of augmented robots. These augmented robots are a true blessing for humans because it enables individuals with spinal cord injury, limb disability, and many more.

Components of a Robots

In most cases, lead-acid batteries are used as a power source. There are many types of batteries like Sliver-cadmium or Nickel-cadmium that can be used in robots as a power source. But (lead-acid) batteries are the best when it comes to heavy-duty and power backups.

Trending Robots In Real Life

presentation about robots ppt

You might have seen this on Facebook, Youtube, or any other social media platforms. Tech companies are trying to automate as many things possible as they can. Recently companies are making tiny robots that can clean your home with zero supervision. All you have to do is, choose the portion you want to clean and the timings. The robot will clean the entire house at the scheduled time before you wake up. Tiny mopping robots like these can save a lot of our time and energy.

Another trending application of robotics comes in the warehouses. These kinds of moving tiny robots are employed in big warehouses that have thousands of racks. It will be difficult and time-consuming to go and pick items manually from the rack or shelf. By implementing moving robots that can carry racks or shelves to us will make things easier. These kinds of moving robots are employed in warehouses of Amazon, Flipkart, Myntra, etc.

Why I Prefer Google Slides to Microsoft PowerPoint

Quick links.

  • Ease of Collaboration
  • Offline Access
  • Integration With Other Google Tools
  • More Storage Space
  • Compatibility With PowerPoint
  • AI Features
  • Provide Detailed Version History
  • Customization Features and Template Options

PowerPoint and Google Slides are two popular options for presentations, but which one is best? As someone who has used both programs for a long time, I've found that Google Slides offers many advantages that make it my go-to choice.

Let's be clear: I'm comparing the web-based PowerPoint and Google Slides versions. It's unfair to compare Google Slides to the desktop version of PowerPoint, isn't it? Here are some reasons why Google Slides is my favorite presentation tool.

1. Ease of Collaboration

Ease of collaboration was the central reason I switched to Google Slides for my presentation needs. As a content creator, I always aim for a seamless collaboration experience while dealing with my clients and team members. Google Slides offered exactly that, and I was in love with it.

So, is Google Slides better than PowerPoint for collaboration? It certainly has advantages that make it an ideal choice for a lot of users.

With Google Slides, you can efficiently work with others and share your work , no matter what kind of computer or phone you use. If you have a Google account and the link to the presentation, you can join in and make changes simultaneously with other members.

In contrast, to collaborate in PowerPoint, you have to consider various external factors, such as the user's working device and storage locations. For example, you might not be able to easily collaborate with someone who has an older version of PowerPoint, or with someone using a PowerPoint mobile due to feature limitations. Some things that are restricted in the free web and mobile version compared to PowerPoint on desktop include limited commenting tags, editing options, and more.

Additionally, Google Slides also has built-in chat and commenting features. This feature allows all your team members to stay on the same page and communicate with each other to streamline editing. In PowerPoint, you're limited to comments only.

2. Offline Access

Another important reason for my switch to Google Slides is the offline access feature. With this feature, you can create, edit, and present presentations to others even without an internet connection. Any changes you apply offline are synced automatically once you're back online, so you can keep working even without an internet connection.

You can activate offline access by checking the offline mode option in your Google Drive settings.

Also, with Google Slides, you don't need software installed on your computer to access your presentations offline. However, Microsoft PowerPoint requires an internet connection to save changes to OneDrive storage. No internet, no autosave!

3. Integration With Other Google Tools

Switching to Google Slides is easy if you already use Google apps like Docs, Sheet, Meet, and Gmail. They all work well together. You can import charts and tables from Google Sheets into your presentations with just a few clicks. Any modifications to the original data in Google Sheets will automatically be reflected in your Google Slides presentation.

For example, on Google Slides, open the "Insert" tab and navigate to the "Chart" option. From there, click on the "From Sheets" option and import a chart from Google Sheets.

Furthermore, you can add Google Keep notes to your Slides and share your content in Google Meet with Smart Canvas without switching between tabs.

On the other hand, Microsoft PowerPoint integrates with other Microsoft tools, but it's not as seamless as Google Slides and has limited integration capabilities. For example, unlike Google Sheets, which updates data automatically in Slides, PowerPoint requires you to manual refresh to update Excel charts. This means you need to copy and paste the updated chart from Excel to PowerPoint.

4. More Storage Space

Google Slides offers more storage space through Google Drive. With a Google account, you get 15GB of storage shared across Google Photos, Drive, and Gmail. This is significantly more than what Microsoft offers with its free PowerPoint Web version, which only provides 5GB of OneDrive storage. If you create large presentations with many images or videos, Google's extra storage space can be a significant advantage.

Additionally, Google offers affordable plans to upgrade your storage if needed. For example, you can get 100GB of storage for a $20 annual fee, which is perfect for those who create and store a lot of presentations. However, it's important to note that pricing for additional storage might be different depending on your region.

For detailed information, it's best to check your plans manually by clicking the "Get More Storage" option in Drive.

5. Compatibility With PowerPoint

I know what you're thinking—what if I need to work with someone who only uses Microsoft PowerPoint? Fear not; Google Slides has got you covered. You can import and export PowerPoint presentations into Google Slides, making switching between the two platforms easy.

This feature has been a lifesaver for me when I work with my clients or colleagues who use PowerPoint. I can easily collaborate with them and edit their files without any hassle. After making changes, I can save the Google Slides file again as a PowerPoint file.

You can add your PowerPoint file to Google Slides by either uploading it on Drive or directly opening it from the File > Open option.

6. AI Features

You can also use Google AI tools like Gemini to improve your presentations. For example, the Gemini AI feature in Google Slides allows users to generate images and slides based on their prompts. You can access Gemini from the Slides side panel and input your prompts, such as "Create a slide about," and it will generate slides accordingly.

This feature lets you quickly add relevant and visually appealing presentation content without leaving the Google Slides platform. Using Gemini AI, you can also generate background images in various styles, such as Vector art, Photography, Watercolor, and others.

In contrast, Microsoft AI feature tools like Copilot are not available on the PowerPoint web version. To use Copilot and other AI features in PowerPoint requires a paid subscription to either Microsoft 365 or Copilot Pro.

7. Provide Detailed Version History

Both Google Slides and Microsoft PowerPoint allow you to view and restore previously edited versions of your presentation. However, Google Slides stands out with its detailed version history feature. This feature groups certain versions of your presentation together if you make multiple changes over a short period. This makes it easy to find and select the version you need. These group versions are displayed under the Version History panel.

Another notable feature of Google Slides is the ability to name the modified versions. This is quite useful when working on large documents with multiple collaborators, as it can take time to find the version you want, among many others. To rename a version, open the "Version History" panel, click the three-dot icon, and then select "Name This Version" from the dropdown menu.

Once you've named important versions of your presentation, you can filter them by selecting the "Named Versions" option from the drop menu. This will highlight only the renamed versions, along with the current version of the document, making it easy to locate the version you need.

8. Customization Features and Template Options

The web version of Microsoft PowerPoint has limited features compared to the PowerPoint desktop app, which can sometimes be helpful while designing presentations. For example, you can't insert charts or equations in the web version. Additionally, you can't add hyperlinks to pictures or shapes. On the other hand, you can add equations, charts, and hyperlinks to images in Google Slides.

While both platforms offer a good selection of templates, I prefer Google Slides because its templates are user-friendly and easy to customize. It also provides more flexibility when working with themes compared to the web version of PowerPoint.

Google Slides isn't a flawless tool, but for me and many other presentation creators, it not only gets the job done but also has some advantages over PowerPoint. Whether you're a student, team, or regular user, you can use it to make clear and effective presentations.
