Standard Paper, Poster Sizes And Dimensions

Paper, Poster Size Information And Learning

Poster Board Size

 what is a poster board.

This a type of display board that is used for displaying posters and other flat printed materials. These boards usually come in large sheets and a variety of colors. The size is significantly bigger than the A2. Poster boards can also be light and flimsy. They are mainly used to support photos, sheets of paper, glitter, letters and other small light items during displays. Such things are glued onto the board itself. Due to such kind of usages, poster boards can easily be recycled and reused. They are found in many places including but not limited to drug stores, office supply stores, and classrooms. They are mostly used for event posters, science exhibitions, and other related school activities.

Standard sizes and color

Poster boards can come in various sizes but the standard size measures 22 inches by 28 inches. This is close to an A1 size which is bit larger measuring more than 23 x 33 inches. It is however larger than A2. The boards come in a variety of shades and colors. These even include neon colors. The standard size is ideal for displaying projects. It shows off smaller displays. It is recommended for smaller student presentations. A medium sized poster board would measure about 24×36 inches and is ideal for displaying larger projects. It is convenient since it allows a trifold to make it smaller enhancing.

Note: Commonly poster boards have a size of 24 x 36 inches. This is enough space to be able to display all of your information without running out of space, it is also a common school and presentation size.

I would like to iterate that the current standard poster board size for the largest printers and wholesalers it is in fact 22 x 28” HOWEVER there are some considerations to take in….

Now, a lot of issues with the standard poster board size is students that need a poster board for their project. 22 x 28 is in fact the standard poster board size but it will be too small for a trifold project.

For students doing a presentation a 36 x 48 tendered poster board size is recommended.

So again, reiterating that for a trifold 9 x 12 eight 46 x 48 standard poster size is ideal as a tip for the headline you can use a 14 to 16 point font and for regular text. You can use 10 to 11 point font for perfection.

Larger sizes.

Standard poster board size can differ and there are in fact other sizes that do appear that are larger. However, the sizes should be used at your own risk because they are in fact specialty sizes and much more difficult to handle due to how large they are. They can be used for different things such as trade shows and projects but will definitely standout.

How thick is a poster board?

The measurements of its thickness can be given in thousandths of an inch. A regular 10 pt. poster board would measure 0.010 inch or 0.254 mm thick. A 12pt. one is 0.012 inch or 0.3048 mm thick. This for poster boards in the United States. Those in Britain, except for the White Poster Board, are coated on both sides. A 12 pt. can therefore measure up to 98 pounds. Buyers or users will normally look at thickness in attempt to establish the right kind of poster board that they need. It is not also a guarantee that a thicker poster board is heavier than one that is relatively thinner. The weights will depend on some things including materials and coatings.

Tagboard Paper

This a smooth-surfaced heavy paper or light cardboard often used to make cut-outs, stencils, and posters. It is also known as an oak tag. A heavyweight tagboard paper measuring 9×12 inches is ideal for arts and crafts projects. It weighs about 30ponds in actual item weight. Some are however uncoated. This type is exceptionally strong and serves multiple purposes. For example, arts and crafts projects cover a broad range of activities; these tagboard papers can support hundreds of such projects. It works perfectly well for anchor charts and has the same color on both sides.

Other good things about this are that they are acid-free and can be recycled and are very affordable. A tagboard paper that measures 18×24 inches has a medium weight. It comes in a hundred sheets per pack. It can be very strong and is also usable for a wide arrange of activities. The weight is about 18 pounds. Just like other smaller ones, these are usually white in color too. Remember aspects such as portability are always very important to consider. It has a relatively higher price than the smaller one measuring 18×24 inches. It however just as thin despite having a relatively heavier weight.

Railroad board

It is a flat board that is usually thin in thickness and is a bristol-type and is colored on both sides. It is used for posters, signposts, mailing cards, tickets, cards, tags and many similar uses. It is usually brightly colored or simply white with its double sides both coated. It can be 0.014×0.020 inches thick. Single sheets are 22×28 inches big and are available in assortment packages. This can weigh about 4.8 ounces and a total shipment weight of 8.8 pounds. They usually come in a wide variety of colors.

School smart Railroad Boards are usually white in color. They are very good choices for any creative project. The boards are white on both sides and are finished with a clear-smooth finish. You can use one of these for art projects, block printing, mounting, construction, mats, stenciling, markers, painting, and of course posters. These boards are usually sold as a pack of a total of 25 pieces. The professional look allows you creates bold signs and posters that can conspicuously be seen. They are also a very great selection for stenciling and block printing.

How to prepare a poster board for a business project or science fair

When your dealing with a science fair project your usually required to use a poster board. Now alot of times a teacher will provide you the size you will need. But I have noticed that even teachers at most times are not sure of the actual poster board size you need. Usually for a science fair project or some other similar project such as a presentation the standard poster board size will be 48″x36″.

Usually you can find these boards online or you could head off to your local staples or Walmart. If you have an art supply store nearby that is also a great option.

  • Make sure your information is organized like a magazine would be, with the principle information and title on the top then the most powerful going top to bottom. The most powerfull point of the poster board is usually the top to middle due to the angle, so make sure the most powerful information you have is located there. Another great tip is not to include too much textual information. Too much textual information can be very burdensome for a readers, its better to display lots of imagery to retain the attention of the  reader.
  • Text and font: Make sure that your font size is large enough to be read by anyone. Some older readers may have trouble reading small font so a great recommendation here would be to use 16 point font or above. If your struggling to fit your text in you include in small font read more: sections. For things such as pictures and captions don’t worry about a smaller font size you can get away with it. With regards to the title it should be something very large and easy to read if you with to include a little subtitle or description this can be an effective way to summarize what your project is about. Here is a guide of what fonts would be ideal. General: Keep with easy to use basic fonts such as Times New Roman, Arial etc try not to get too fancy we want to be able to see your work! Don’t overuse italic text, this is a big no no. You can use italics for certain areas but don’t make half your project the same. Do not use CAPS this will make your project difficult to read. Do not use cursive or any difficult to read text. Avoid text that is to similar to your background.
  • a) Title: 150pt font and up A rule of thumb is you want to be able to see your title from about 5 meters away from you
  • b) Headings: 32pt font and up
  • c) Subheadings: 20pt font and up
  • d) Main Text: 16pt font
  • e) Captions and read more text: 12pt font and up

3. Photos: You would be surprised by how much a picture can change the entire look and overall feel of a project. A project with just textual information is unreadable and will not retain information after all if you were just going to put a poster board full of text you could have used a booklet.

What your going to need

  • A poster board, poster board size of 36″ by 48″
  • Paper to print out information or images
  • Color paper to possibly use as a nice background for your information and to highlight things
  • Adhesives such as glue sticks
  • Color markers to highlight certain information
  • Possibly stencils to highlight titles

Poster board ideas

Poster boards can be great tools in selling your ideas creatively to attract an overwhelming response by your audience. This article looks at some of these ideas. There are certain elements that when included can invoke some desired emotions from the viewers or audience. Some get you very excited and energized. Others are full of details. It is, however, critical that you find the right balance between the content included and the headline.

You can always add images, logos, and other impressive or professional aspects. If all that is achieved, your poster is fit to go. In the same vein, knowing your prospective audience properly is advisable. This will guide you on which colors to use, fonts, and graphics that complement the overall content. Some of these ideas include the following: Color can be used to energize and invoke different moods. Bright colors invoke a strong feeling of energy and so on. Darker colors relax the audience and allow them to go over the content slowly. Certain colors are bold, some are romantic, irresistible, while others are just cool.

Springtime colors which are soft in nature and when used in making an event poster can make the viewer realize that it is an outdoor event from the very first impression. This communicates so much even before the viewer reads the details. Using bright colors for the background and dull colors for the font creates clarity.

Creation of visual hierarchy

Visuals on poster boards can be used to grab the attention of the viewer during a quick read. While preparing one, rank your information in order of importance. If working with little information, you can go for bold and simple graphics or a good photo. Lots of information will demand that you focus on your headline and make it stand out. Then you may proceed to group the smaller information in chunks.

Typographical impressions

The fonts and typefaces used can convey a lot of detail. These may seem subtle to others, but typography is an element that can be able to separate two similar ideas and content where one is rated as world class while the other with poor typography is given very little attention. In one of his speeches at Stanford University, Steve Jobs (Co-founder of Apple), stated that if he had not dropped in on one typography class after dropping out of school, the Mac would not have had such multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts.

This largely contributed to the success of Apple according to him. Therefore, when choosing a font for your next project, show some seriousness by picking a bold sans serif and enhance elegance through italic serif. A script typeface would denote fun.

Less details

Less can be more at times. You can always say less by removing too many unnecessary details from your presentation. It intrigues the viewer. One word or one moving image can communicate a lot compared to many empty words. Only use the required amount, never add a unrequired word or unneeded graphics. The audience judges whatever you are presenting through the manner in which you present it, for example, an event poster with minimalistic elegance is taken to be carried on in the same spirit to the event itself.

Focusing your point

Create a point of concentration for instance by employing the use of photography that is in or out of focus to add more weight to your text. You can also consider cropping an individual photo to show the most significant features vividly. This directs the reader’s eye to only the relevant details. For example, a headline baby can be accompanied by the cropped photo of only a baby’s face rather than the baby’s entire head or body. Shapes can be applied to develop a visual interest Shapes create guidelines which can lead the reader’s eye around the poster. You can put your text inside to ensure the audience reads a particular message desired for original passage.

The use of shapes is naturally versatile and undisputedly very efficient. Layering can create desired depth and dimension If you play correctly with your layering of images, colors, and words, you may just get that ultimate look of desired depth and dimension. Thousands of ideas cannot all be placed in one article; it is however quite important to take note of the already discussed ones. With this, you will achieve an output that can stand out among many.

Elements of a Poster

Change size in powerpoint, using the ruler, grid, and guides in powerpoint, more powerpoint training, template resources, font choice, text alignment.

  • Colors and Images

Your poster should include these elements:

  • Author(s), with affiliations and emails

If your poster is a representation of a research study, you will want to include the following sections:

  • Introduction or objective
  • Conclusions and/or discussion
  • Acknowledgements

If your poster is a representation of an event or other kind of project, you may want to forego formal abstract sections in favor of the 5 Ws:

  • Who (introduce the author, organization, or community)
  • What (what did you do? how did you do it?)
  • Where (where did you do it?)
  • When (when did it take place?)
  • Why (what are the outcomes, implications, or future possibilities?)

To change the size in Powerpoint:

  • Go to the Design tab and choose "Slide Size" (it's on the right size of the ribbon)
  • Choose "Custom Slide Size"
  • Change "Slides sized for:" to "Custom"
  • Fill in your desired width and height.

Click the View tab to see checkboxes that will allow you to turn on the Ruler, Grid, and Guides (click the image below to see a screenshot).

Powerpoint ribbon location

Ruler : Allows you to see the dimensions of your slide. You'll see a vertical and horizontal ruler.

Grid : By default, the gridlines are 1 inch apart. Right click in white space of your poster to get more options for spacing. This enables precise alignment.

Guides : By default, you'll get one horizontal and one vertical guide placed in the center of your poster. Right click on a guide to add more guidelines, or to delete one. You can use Guides to invisibly define columns of your poster, margins, and more. This gives you manual control, alternatively, you can use Smart Guides (see below).

Smart Guides : Powerpoint has a built-in system for showing you alignment as you move objects around. The video below demonstrates what Smart Guides look like.

Once you've got your slide layout set, you'll want to start creating Shapes and Text Boxes. Here are some tips and tricks for working with objects:

  • Use Ctrl+D to duplicate any object.
  • Then you can format them all at once, identically!
  • You can also group them, for easier movement and alignment (right click to see the Group option).

Most posters are landscape (horizontal) orientation. The title/author(s) will be across the top, with 3–4 columns below that contain the rest of the poster elements. Make sure you leave plenty of white space in your design—a poster crammed full of text and images is very difficult to read.

Here is an example of a 2 column poster layout using the 5 Ws for headings (who, what, where, when, and why):

The Most Common Poster Sizes, Visualized:

Model standing next to an 8.5 x 11 inches or A4 size poster, also known as Letter Size Poster, for scale. The poster is approximately the size of a standard piece of printer paper.

Letter Poster Size: 8.5 x 11 inches or A4

Size in mm:  215.9mm x 279.4mm Size in pixels:  2550px x 3300px at 300ppi Closest International Size:  A4 (210 x 297 mm / 8.3 x 11.7 in)

Letter-sized posters, 8.5”x11”, are the smallest standard poster size and a great option for announcements and advertisements. Posters of this size can often be found on bulletin boards and street posts advertising events, schedules, and conveying basic information. Design-wise, these posters tend to work best when they have a balance of design and text elements to ensure legibility.

Image shows a model standing by an 11 x 17 inches or A3 size poster, also referred to as Bulletin Poster. The poster's size is comparable to a large drawing pad.

Bulletin Poster Size: 11 x 17 inches or A3

Size in mm: 279.4mm x 431.8mm Size in pixels: 3300px x 5100px at 300ppi Closest International Size: A3 (297 mm x 420 mm / 11.7 in x 16.5 in)

The bulletin poster size, 11”x17”, is commonly selected when a letter-sized poster isn’t enough. Due to its larger size, a bulletin poster can be more eye-catching and professional with room to include key dates and calls to action. Bulletin posters are most frequently used indoors to advertise community events and concerts, most often on a bulletin board

A model is displaying a 16 x 20 inches or A2 size poster known as the Photo Poster. The poster size is roughly the size of a medium artwork or large photo frame.

Photo Poster Size: 16 x 20 inches or A2

Size in mm: 406.4mm x 508mm Size in pixels: 4800px x 6000px at 300ppi Closest International Size: A2 (420 x 594 mm / 16.5 x 23.4 in)

Perfect for art prints and large-scale photography, a 16”x20” poster size provides ample space to include high-quality images. This size is often used for retail or in-store advertising and to display fine art or photos.

In this image, a model is displaying an 18 x 24 inches or B2 size poster, referred to as Medium Poster. This poster size is akin to a small poster commonly seen in home decor.

Medium Poster Size: 18 x 24 inches or B2

Size in mm: 457.2mm x 609.6mm Size in pixels: 5400px x 7200px at 300ppi Closest International Size: B2 (500 × 707 mm / 19.7 × 27.8 in)

An 18”x24” or medium poster size is best for displaying information such as public health notices, where written information and accompanying graphics coexist. This poster size is also a go-to for school clubs and athletic teams, as it provides space for larger images and text without overcrowding.

Model standing beside a 24 x 36 inches or A1 size poster, also known as Large Poster. The size of the poster is similar to a large painting.

Standard Poster Size: 24 x 36 inches or A1

Size in mm: 609.6mm x 914.4mm Size in pixels: 5400px x 10800px at 300ppi Closest International Size: A1 (594 x 841 mm / 23.4 x 33.1 in)

The 24”x36” poster size is a standard for large posters. Posters of this size are commonly used for advertising purposes, as well as for trade shows and exhibits, as they are large enough to command attention in high-traffic areas where people might be passing by and taking in information quickly.

Image shows a model displaying a 27 x 40 inches or B1 size poster, referred to as Movie Poster. This poster size is typical of standard movie posters seen at theaters.

Movie Poster Size: 27 x 40 inches or B1

Size in mm: 685.8mm x 1016mm Size in pixels: 8100px x 12000px at 300ppi Closest International Size: B1 (707 × 1000 mm / 27.8 × 39.4 in)

We are all familiar with classic movie posters, which, technically speaking, are 27”x40” poster size. These posters, while traditionally used to advertise movies by showcasing minimal graphics and large text, are also a great option for outdoor advertising. For our large posters, we recommend sizing text to a large enough scale that it can be easily read by passersby.

Model standing beside a large 40 x 60 inches or B0 size poster, known as Bus Stop Poster. The size of this poster is roughly the size of a small person, comparable to advertisements seen at bus stops or billboards.

Bus Stop Poster Size: 40 x 60 inches or B0

Size in mm: 1016mm x 1524mm Size in pixels: 12000px x 18000px at 300ppi Closest International Size: B0 (1000 × 1414 mm / 39.4 × 55.7in)

The standard size for posters displayed at bus stop shelters and in subways is 40”x60”. Design decisions make a large impact on posters of this size, as they are meant to command attention both from afar and up close. If the standard bus stop or subway poster size isn’t sufficient, a billboard poster, 46”x67”, offers slightly more real estate to convey your messaging whether for an advertising campaign or otherwise.

Consider Your Use Case to Determine the Best Poster Size for Your Project

When determining which poster sizes work best for your project, it’s helpful to consider the amount of information that needs to be conveyed in text, as well as any accompanying artwork and images. A well-designed poster will balance text and visual elements while remaining easily legible. Audience and messaging can also impact decisions regarding poster size. Bulletin sized posters, for instance, will most likely be viewed up close with and with a greater level of attention than a bus stop poster, which will be viewed both up close and from a distance or passing glance. Details like this can impact the type of design and how much messaging you choose to display.

Custom Poster Sizes and Post-Production Options

Aside from the standard or most commonly printed poster sizes, a good large format printer should be able to produce posters in most any size you can dream up. Custom poster sizing offers some flexibility between standard sizes and can be scaled to dimensions as large as 52 inches wide and any length of your choice.

If you plan to print a large poster or if it will be used outdoors or in heavily frequented public spaces it may be worth considering having your printer mount the poster to foam board after the poster is printed. Mounting and lamination are key components to consider when determining where and how to display your poster. For instance, an outdoor poster display might require more reinforcement than a poster intended for indoor use, as it will be exposed to the elements, accelerating any basic wear and tear.

Follow Print Design Best Practices When Producing Your Poster

Aside from poster size, there are other design elements to consider when printing your poster. Following best practices for print design will help ensure your poster printing job rolls off the press perfectly the first time.

  • Design your poster in CMYK: Thomas Group offers black-and-white and full color printing services, as well as a wide array of paper types and weights. However, your colors won’t print correctly if you’re not using the correct color space for your document. Make sure to design and export your file using CMYK colors, which are optimized for print, rather than RGB colors, which are optimized for on-screen viewing.
  • Use bleed properly: To ensure the best quality of your poster, we recommend adding a bleed, or an extra .125” of background image, to ensure that your poster’s design fully extends across the poster, rather than leaving a seam of white background after the printing and trimming process.
  • Use 300 dpi images: It’s important to use the right image resolution for all print work but it’s especially important for posters, as their large sizer will more easily show blurry photos. If you’re using photos on your posters, make sure they are 300dpi.
  • Outline fonts: Before sending your poster printing job to your printer, make sure all fonts are outlined. Your printer may not have the same fonts installed as you especially if you’re using custom fonts in your designs. Outlining your fonts helps to ensure your font will print correctly by vectorizing the text, turning it into non-editable curves and points on the design rather than editable text, which will appear in a default font if the printer doesn’t have it installed.
  • Eliminate some guess work and download a free starter file:  Use the form below to get a free starter file for your poster design project. The file is a blank canvas for your creativity with the technical details taken care of that designers often overlook.

Find the right poster board size.

When shopping online, you may be surprised by the number of poster board sizes you come across after only finding one or two sizes available in stores. Certain retailers such as TheRoyalStore.com specialize in poster board and offer a variety of sizes to suit a number of different needs. It is helpful to have some knowledge about the various sizes and forms of poster board on the market so you can find a size that best suits your project.

Poster board in any size is a very versatile material, so before you shop it is helpful to have a solid idea of what sort of materials your project calls for.  For example, do you need a sturdy, functional board or are you more concerned with the color and texture of the board?  Most people use poster board for signs or school presentations, so for these purposes a standard size of poster board such as 22”x28” would be ideal.  22”x28” board also comes in the widest range of styles and colors.  However, it may be difficult to transport.  If you are making a sign that you wish to display in a sign holder, choosing a smaller size of poster board might be a better option since it is a lighter weight.  11”x14” poster board is a good choice for a standing yard sign, but make sure the size you choose is big enough so your intended message will be easily read from a distance.  At TheRoyalStore.com , you can find Royal Brites poster board in three sizes: 22”x28”, 14”x22”, and 11”x14”.  These sizes are available in all Royal Brites Primary Colors, 2 Cool Colors, Black & White and Grid Board styles.

In addition to knowing your available poster board sizes, it is also helpful to know about the different forms of display board to find out what kind will best contribute to the success of your project.

Tri-fold foam board or project board is a popular material for presentations and fair displays.  Tri-fold board is very reliable because it is sturdy; two common sizes are 22”x28” (folded open) and 36” x 48” (folded open).  Foam board is similar to poster board but it is stiff and can therefore be propped up to display.  It is also very light and easy to transport.  For crafting projects like model-making, foam board or firm board can be a handy material.  TheRoyalStore.com offers foam board comes in two sizes: 20” x 30” and 22” x 28”.

Knowing poster board sizes will help you make an informed choice about what supplies you need when preparing for a project.  Check out TheRoyalStore.com to see one a versatile collection of display board and board supplies online.

What is a Poster Size Guide?

A poster size guide is a crucial tool that gives you a comprehensive understanding of the different dimensions used in poster printing. It acts as a reference point to comprehend standard poster sizes, make accurate size comparisons and assists you in selecting the ideal poster size for your distinct requirements.

Poster Size Guide: How to Choose Wisely

Making an informed decision about the size of your poster can significantly impact its effectiveness. By understanding standard sizes and their applications, you can ensure that your poster fits perfectly into its intended environment and communicates your message effectively.

Sizes and Dimensions of Popular Poster Sizes

When it comes to poster sizes, there’s a wide range of options available, each catering to specific purposes and preferences. From small-sized posters perfect for personal projects or intimate spaces to large-scale posters ideal for grabbing attention in crowded areas, the choices are endless.

Whether you need a poster for advertising, showcasing artwork, or simply adding a touch of creativity to a room, exploring the diverse array of standard poster sizes will surely help you find the perfect fit for your needs.

Before we start, let’s clarify one question: What is the average poster size? You may be surprised to discover there is no specific “average” poster size, as it can vary depending on the purpose, location, and audience of the poster. However, some common poster sizes for printing include:

Small (11″ x 17″)

Small posters are perfect for bulletin boards or compact spaces where information needs to be communicated effectively. Despite their size, they can pack a punch when designed well.

Medium (18″ x 24″)

Medium-sized posters are versatile and provide ample room for compelling visuals and text. They are commonly used for art prints, office or home decor, and mid-sized advertisements.

Large (24″ x 36″)

Large posters are highly visible and ideal for advertising or informational posters in larger spaces. They allow for more complex designs or more text without sacrificing readability.

Extra-large (27″ x 40″)

Extra-large posters are primarily used for high-impact marketing campaigns or large-scale events. They are the size you often see in movie theaters or at exhibition displays.

You can use the information above as a poster size reference guide.

Advantages of Using Standard Sizes

Using standard poster print sizes offers several advantages:

  • Ensures that your designs fit perfectly within common frames and mounts available in the market, eliminating the need for costly custom frames.
  • Streamlines the printing process, as printers are typically set up to handle these dimensions, making it quicker and easier to print your posters.
  • Makes it easier to re-print or duplicate your poster, as the original file specifications will be readily available.

Poster Size Comparison: An Expert’s Guide

Understanding the comparison between different sizes of posters is crucial in choosing the right one for your needs. Each size serves a unique purpose, and awareness of that can help you make a more informed decision.

Why Poster Sizes Are Important

The size of your poster directly affects its effectiveness. A poster that’s too small might not be noticed, while one that’s too large could overwhelm the viewer. The correct size strikes a balance, ensuring your message is conveyed efficiently and appropriately to your target audience.

Considerations for Choosing Poster Size

Several factors determine the perfect poster size. Here are some considerations to keep in mind:

Purpose of the Poster

Are you looking to create a poster for informational purposes, such as conveying important details about an event or providing educational content? Or perhaps you’re considering promotional activities where you want to catch the attention of your target audience and promote a product or service.

On the other hand, maybe you’re interested in creating decorative posters meant to enhance the aesthetic appeal of a space or convey a particular mood or theme. Depending on your objectives, different poster sizes may be more suitable for fulfilling your goals and effectively communicating your message to the intended viewers.

Amount of Text or Detail in the Design

When it comes to intricate designs or content-rich posters, opting for a larger size is often necessary to ensure optimal readability. Doing so allows viewers to grasp the finer details and seamlessly consume the text-heavy information without strain.

Location of Display

The size of the display area will directly influence the size of the poster. In order to ensure optimal visibility, larger spaces will require larger posters that can effectively capture the attention and engage the audience. By taking into consideration the dimensions of the display area, you can create a poster that stands out and effectively communicates your message.

Viewing Distance

When considering the distance between the viewer and your poster, it’s important to think about how far they will be standing when reading it. Opting for larger posters makes them easily visible from a distance, ensuring that your message catches the attention of passersby.

Of course, smaller posters are ideal for up-close viewing, allowing viewers to appreciate the finer details. So, depending on the intended viewing distance, choosing the right size for your poster can significantly impact its effectiveness in conveying your message.

Understanding Poster Print Size Terminology

In the world of printing, certain terms are frequently used. Understanding these can help you make more informed decisions about your poster printing.

Commonly Used Terms for Poster Sizes

Dimension refers to the length and width of the poster. It’s usually measured in inches in the US and in centimeters in most other countries.

Orientation

Orientation determines whether the poster is displayed in portrait (vertical) or landscape (horizontal) format.

Bleed is an extra margin around your design that gets cut off after printing. It ensures that your design extends all the way to the edge of the paper.

How to Choose the Right Poster Size for Printing

Three movie posters hanging on a wall

Selecting the appropriate size for your poster print involves taking into account various factors. These considerations will help you decide the best poster size for your needs.

Factors for Selecting Poster Size

Here are some factors to consider when selecting a poster size:

The Design Itself

If your design is intricate or text-heavy, it may benefit from a larger size. Conversely, a simple design with a clear message can be effective even at smaller sizes.

The Space Where It Will Be Displayed

Measure your display area before deciding on poster size. You’ll want a size that is noticeable but not overwhelming.

The Distance from Which It Will Be Viewed

If your poster will be viewed from a distance, choose a larger size. If viewers will be close, a smaller size may suffice.

The Type of Message You Want to Convey

Larger posters are suitable for bold statements or detailed designs, while smaller ones can be perfect for concise, straightforward messages.

Tips for Optimizing Your Design

Once you’ve selected your poster size, it’s important to optimize your design to ensure the best possible outcome:

Use High-Resolution Images

This is particularly important for larger posters, as low-resolution images can appear pixelated or blurred when printed at a large scale.

Ensure Readability

All text should be large enough to read from the intended viewing distance. Choose fonts and colors that are easy to read.

Keep Essential Elements Within the ‘Safe Area’

This is the area of your design that is guaranteed not to be cut off during the printing process. Important information should always be kept within this area.

Consider the Use of Color

The right color scheme can help your poster stand out. Keep your audience and message in mind when selecting colors.

Poster Sizing

It can be challenging to change the size of your poster once it is designed so starting out with the correct size will save you a few headaches.

Determining Poster Size

Answering these questions in order will help you figure out what size to make your poster:

  • 1 Do my poster sections flow logically? The sections of your poster should be organized and follow the general structure of introduction → data → conclusion.
  • 1 Does your event require a specific size poster? It’s best to first check if there a size requirement or set of guidelines given by your the event where you are presenting.
  • 1 How large is your presentation space? Typically your poster will be attached to a presentation board and those come in various sizes. Before choosing your size, make sure you know if it will fit. You may want to make the width of your poster slightly smaller than the total space so you can stand to the side of it and not block anything.
  • 1 Does your school or organization recommend a specific size? Occasionally, a school or organization will set guidelines for poster sizes. If this is the case, they may have a template you can start with.

If none of the above applies, we recommend a 48” x 36” poster. This is a standard size that fits most presentation spaces and is the most common size we see printed.

Document Setup

If you are using Powerpoint to make your poster, be mindful that there is a 56” limit on both the height and the width of a slide. However, any proportional size can be printed at the size you need. The easiest way to accomplish this is to just divide your width and height by 2. For example, if you want a 72” x 48” poster, set up your document at 36” x 24”.

Proportional Sizing with PowerPoint

As explained in Images, Charts, and Graphs , you should make sure all the elements of your poster look good when zoomed in 100%. If you plan on getting your poster printed at twice the size of the file, make sure you zoom to 200% when checking that images look crisp.

Scientific/Academic Conference Poster Presentation

Digital research poster presentations, slidemodel poster presentation templates, how to make a research poster presentation step-by-step, considerations for printing poster presentations, how to present a research poster presentation, final words, what is a research poster .

Research posters are visual overviews of the most relevant information extracted from a research paper or analysis.   They are essential communication formats for sharing findings with peers and interested people in the field. Research posters can also effectively present material for other areas besides the sciences and STEM—for example, business and law.

You’ll be creating research posters regularly as an academic researcher, scientist, or grad student. You’ll have to present them at numerous functions and events. For example:

  • Conference presentations
  • Informational events
  • Community centers

The research poster presentation is a comprehensive way to share data, information, and research results. Before the pandemic, the majority of research events were in person. During lockdown and beyond, virtual conferences and summits became the norm. Many researchers now create poster presentations that work in printed and digital formats.

Examples of research posters using SlideModel's templates

Let’s look at why it’s crucial to spend time creating poster presentations for your research projects, research, analysis, and study papers.

Summary of why are poster presentations important

Research posters represent you and your sponsor’s research

Research papers and accompanying poster presentations are potent tools for representation and communication in your field of study. Well-performing poster presentations help scientists, researchers, and analysts grow their careers through grants and sponsorships.

When presenting a poster presentation for a sponsored research project, you’re representing the company that sponsored you. Your professionalism, demeanor, and capacity for creating impactful poster presentations call attention to other interested sponsors, spreading your impact in the field.

Research posters demonstrate expertise and growth

Presenting research posters at conferences, summits, and graduate grading events shows your expertise and knowledge in your field of study. The way your poster presentation looks and delivers, plus your performance while presenting the work, is judged by your viewers regardless of whether it’s an officially judged panel.

Recurring visitors to research conferences and symposia will see you and your poster presentations evolve. Improve your impact by creating a great poster presentation every time by paying attention to detail in the poster design and in your oral presentation. Practice your public speaking skills alongside the design techniques for even more impact.

Poster presentations create and maintain collaborations

Every time you participate in a research poster conference, you create meaningful connections with people in your field, industry or community. Not only do research posters showcase information about current data in different areas, but they also bring people together with similar interests. Countless collaboration projects between different research teams started after discussing poster details during coffee breaks.

An effective research poster template deepens your peer’s understanding of a topic by highlighting research, data, and conclusions. This information can help other researchers and analysts with their work. As a research poster presenter, you’re given the opportunity for both teaching and learning while sharing ideas with peers and colleagues.

Anatomy of a Winning Poster Presentation

Do you want your research poster to perform well?  Following the standard layout and adding a few personal touches will help attendees know how to read your poster and get the most out of your information.

The anatomy of a winning poster

The overall size of your research poster ultimately depends on the dimensions of the provided space at the conference or research poster gallery. The poster orientation can be horizontal or vertical, with horizontal being the most common.  In general, research posters measure 48 x 36 inches or are an A0 paper size.

A virtual poster can be the same proportions as the printed research poster, but you have more leeway regarding the dimensions. Virtual research posters should fit on a screen with no need to scroll, with 1080p resolution as a standard these days. A horizontal presentation size is ideal for that.

A research poster presentation has a standard layout of 2–5 columns with 2–3 sections each. Typical structures say to separate the content into four sections; 1. A horizontal header 2. Introduction column, 3. Research/Work/Data column, and 4. Conclusion column. Each unit includes topics that relate to your poster’s objective.  Here’s a generalized outline for a poster presentation:

  • Condensed Abstract
  • Objectives/Purpose
  • Methodology
  • Recommendations
  • Implications
  • Acknowledgments
  • Contact Information

The overview content you include in the units depends on your poster presentations’ theme, topic, industry, or field of research. A scientific or academic poster will include sections like hypothesis, methodology, and materials. A marketing analysis poster will include performance metrics and competitor analysis results.

There’s no way a poster can hold all the information included in your research paper or analysis report. The poster is an overview that invites the audience to want to find out more. That’s where supplement material comes in. Create a printed PDF handout or card with a QR code (created using a QR code generator ). Send the audience to the best online location for reading or downloading the complete paper.

What Makes a Poster Presentation Good and Effective?

For your poster presentation to be effective and well-received, it needs to cover all the bases and be inviting to find out more. Stick to the standard layout suggestions and give it a unique look and feel. We’ve put together some of the most critical research poster-creation tips in the list below. Your poster presentation will perform as long as you check all the boxes.

The information you choose to include in the sections of your poster presentation needs to be cohesive. Train your editing eye and do a few revisions before presenting. The best way to look at it is to think of The Big Picture. Don’t get stuck on the details; your attendees won’t always know the background behind your research topic or why it’s important.

Be cohesive in how you word the titles, the length of the sections, the highlighting of the most important data, and how your oral presentation complements the printed—or virtual—poster.

The most important characteristic of your poster presentation is its readability and clarity. You need a poster presentation with a balanced design that’s easy to read at a distance of 1.5 meters or 4 feet. The font size and spacing must be clear and neat. All the content must suggest a visual flow for the viewer to follow.

That said, you don’t need to be a designer to add something special to your poster presentation. Once you have the standard—and recognized—columns and sections, add your special touch. These can be anything from colorful boxes for the section titles to an interesting but subtle background, images that catch the eye, and charts that inspire a more extended look.

Storytelling is a presenting technique involving writing techniques to make information flow. Firstly, storytelling helps give your poster presentation a great introduction and an impactful conclusion.

Think of storytelling as the invitation to listen or read more, as the glue that connects sections, making them flow from one to another. Storytelling is using stories in the oral presentation, for example, what your lab partner said when you discovered something interesting. If it makes your audience smile and nod, you’ve hit the mark. Storytelling is like giving a research presentation a dose of your personality, and it can help turning your data into opening stories .

Design Tips For Creating an Effective Research Poster Presentation

The section above briefly mentioned how important design is to your poster presentation’s effectiveness. We’ll look deeper into what you need to know when designing a poster presentation.

1. Font Characteristics

The typeface and size you choose are of great importance. Not only does the text need to be readable from two meters away, but it also needs to look and sit well on the poster. Stay away from calligraphic script typefaces, novelty typefaces, or typefaces with uniquely shaped letters.

Stick to the classics like a sans serif Helvetica, Lato, Open Sans, or Verdana. Avoid serif typefaces as they can be difficult to read from far away. Here are some standard text sizes to have on hand.

  • Title: 85 pt
  • Authors: 65 pt
  • Headings: 36 pt
  • Body Text: 24 pt
  • Captions: 18 pt

Resume of font characteristics a winning poster presentation must follow

If you feel too prone to use serif typefaces, work with a font pairing tool that helps you find a suitable solution – and intend those serif fonts for heading sections only. As a rule, never use more than 3 different typefaces in your design. To make it more dynamic, you can work with the same font using light, bold, and italic weights to put emphasis on the required areas.

2. Color Pairing

Using colors in your poster presentation design is a great way to grab the viewer’s attention. A color’s purpose is to help the viewer follow the data flow in your presentation, not distract. Don’t let the color take more importance than the information on your poster.

Effective color pairing tactics for poster presentations

Choose one main color for the title and headlines and a similar color for the data visualizations. If you want to use more than one color, don’t create too much contrast between them. Try different tonalities of the same color and keep things balanced visually. Your color palette should have at most one main color and two accent colors.

Black text over a white background is standard practice for printed poster presentations, but for virtual presentations, try a very light gray instead of white and a very dark gray instead of black. Additionally, use variations of light color backgrounds and dark color text. Make sure it’s easy to read from two meters away or on a screen, depending on the context. We recommend ditching full white or full black tone usage as it hurts eyesight in the long term due to its intense contrast difference with the light ambiance.

3. Data Visualization Dimensions

Just like the text, your charts, graphs, and data visualizations must be easy to read and understand. Generally, if a person is interested in your research and has already read some of the text from two meters away, they’ll come closer to look at the charts and graphs.

Tips for properly arranging data visualization dimensions in poster presentations

Fit data visualizations inside columns or let them span over two columns. Remove any unnecessary borders, lines, or labels to make them easier to read at a glance. Use a flat design without shadows or 3D characteristics. The text in legends and captions should stay within the chart size and not overflow into the margins. Use a unified text size of 18px for all your data visualizations.

4. Alignment, Margins, and White Space

Finally, the last design tip for creating an impressive and memorable poster presentation is to be mindful of the layout’s alignment, margins, and white space. Create text boxes to help keep everything aligned. They allow you to resize, adapt, and align the content along a margin or grid.

Take advantage of the white space created by borders and margins between sections. Don’t crowd them with a busy background or unattractive color.

Tips on alignment, margins, and white space in poster presentation design

Calculate margins considering a print format. It is a good practice in case the poster presentation ends up becoming in physical format, as you won’t need to downscale your entire design (affecting text readability in the process) to preserve information.

There are different tools that you can use to make a poster presentation. Presenters who are familiar with Microsoft Office prefer to use PowerPoint. You can learn how to make a poster in PowerPoint here.

Poster Presentation Examples

Before you start creating a poster presentation, look at some examples of real research posters. Get inspired and get creative.

Research poster presentations printed and mounted on a board look like the one in the image below. The presenter stands to the side, ready to share the information with visitors as they walk up to the panels.

Example of the structure of a scientific/academic conference poster presentation

With more and more conferences staying virtual or hybrid, the digital poster presentation is here to stay. Take a look at examples from a poster session at the OHSU School of Medicine .

Use SlideModel templates to help you create a winning poster presentation with PowerPoint and Google Slides. These poster PPT templates will get you off on the right foot. Mix and match tables and data visualizations from other poster slide templates to create your ideal layout according to the standard guidelines.

Finally, we recommend presenters check our OSMG Framework PowerPoint template, as it is an ideal tool for representing a business plan: its goals, strategies, and measures for success. Expose complex processes in a simplified manner by adding this template to your poster presentation.

Remember these three words when making your research poster presentation: develop, design, and present. These are the three main actions toward a successful poster presentation.

Summary of how to make a research poster presentation

The section below will take you on a step-by-step journey to create your next poster presentation.

Step 1: Define the purpose and audience of your poster presentation

Before making a poster presentation design, you’ll need to plan first. Here are some questions to answer at this point:

  • Are they in your field?
  • Do they know about your research topic?
  • What can they get from your research?
  • Will you print it?
  • Is it for a virtual conference?

Step 2: Make an outline

With a clear purpose and strategy, it’s time to collect the most important information from your research paper, analysis, or documentation. Make a content dump and then select the most interesting information. Use the content to draft an outline.

Outlines help formulate the overall structure better than going straight into designing the poster. Mimic the standard poster structure in your outline using section headlines as separators. Go further and separate the content into the columns they’ll be placed in.

Step 3: Write the content

Write or rewrite the content for the sections in your poster presentation. Use the text in your research paper as a base, but summarize it to be more succinct in what you share.

Don’t forget to write a catchy title that presents the problem and your findings in a clear way. Likewise, craft the headlines for the sections in a similar tone as the title, creating consistency in the message. Include subtle transitions between sections to help follow the flow of information in order.

Avoid copying/pasting entire sections of the research paper on which the poster is based. Opt for the storytelling approach, so the delivered message results are interesting for your audience.

Step 4: Put it all together visually

This entire guide on how to design a research poster presentation is the perfect resource to help you with this step. Follow all the tips and guidelines and have an unforgettable poster presentation.

Moving on, here’s how to design a research poster presentation with PowerPoint Templates . Open a new project and size it to the standard 48 x 36 inches. Using the outline, map out the sections on the empty canvas. Add a text box for each title, headline, and body text. Piece by piece, add the content into their corresponding text box.

Basic structure layout of an academic poster presentation

Transform the text information visually, make bullet points, and place the content in tables and timelines. Make your text visual to avoid chunky text blocks that no one will have time to read. Make sure all text sizes are coherent for all headings, body texts, image captions, etc. Double-check for spacing and text box formatting.

Next, add or create data visualizations, images, or diagrams. Align everything into columns and sections, making sure there’s no overflow. Add captions and legends to the visualizations, and check the color contrast with colleagues and friends. Ask for feedback and progress to the last step.

Step 5: Last touches

Time to check the final touches on your poster presentation design. Here’s a checklist to help finalize your research poster before sending it to printers or the virtual summit rep.

  • Check the resolution of all visual elements in your poster design. Zoom to 100 or 200% to see if the images pixelate. Avoid this problem by using vector design elements and high-resolution images.
  • Ensure that charts and graphs are easy to read and don’t look crowded.
  • Analyze the visual hierarchy. Is there a visual flow through the title, introduction, data, and conclusion?
  • Take a step back and check if it’s legible from a distance. Is there enough white space for the content to breathe?
  • Does the design look inviting and interesting?

An often neglected topic arises when we need to print our designs for any exhibition purpose. Since A0 is a hard-to-manage format for most printers, these poster presentations result in heftier charges for the user. Instead, you can opt to work your design in two A1 sheets, which also becomes more manageable for transportation. Create seamless borders for the section on which the poster sheets should meet, or work with a white background.

Paper weight options should be over 200 gsm to avoid unwanted damage during the printing process due to heavy ink usage. If possible, laminate your print or stick it to photographic paper – this shall protect your work from spills.

Finally, always run a test print. Gray tints may not be printed as clearly as you see them on screen (this is due to the RGB to CMYK conversion process). Other differences can be appreciated when working with ink jet plotters vs. laser printers. Give yourself enough room to maneuver last-minute design changes.

Presenting a research poster is a big step in the poster presentation cycle. Your poster presentation might or might not be judged by faculty or peers. But knowing what judges look for will help you prepare for the design and oral presentation, regardless of whether you receive a grade for your work or if it’s business related. Likewise, the same principles apply when presenting at an in-person or virtual summit.

The opening statement

Part of presenting a research poster is welcoming the viewer to your small personal area in the sea of poster presentations. You’ll need an opening statement to pitch your research poster and get the viewers’ attention.

Draft a 2 to 3-sentence pitch that covers the most important points:

  • What the research is
  • Why was it conducted
  • What the results say

From that opening statement, you’re ready to continue with the oral presentation for the benefit of your attendees.

The oral presentation

During the oral presentation, share the information on the poster while conversing with the interested public. Practice many times before the event. Structure the oral presentation as conversation points, and use the poster’s visual flow as support. Make eye contact with your audience as you speak, but don’t make them uncomfortable.

Pro Tip: In a conference or summit, if people show up to your poster area after you’ve started presenting it to another group, finish and then address the new visitors.

QA Sessions

When you’ve finished the oral presentation, offer the audience a chance to ask questions. You can tell them before starting the presentation that you’ll be holding a QA session at the end. Doing so will prevent interruptions as you’re speaking.

If presenting to one or two people, be flexible and answer questions as you review all the sections on your poster.

Supplemental Material

If your audience is interested in learning more, you can offer another content type, further imprinting the information in their minds. Some ideas include; printed copies of your research paper, links to a website, a digital experience of your poster, a thesis PDF, or data spreadsheets.

Your audience will want to contact you for further conversations; include contact details in your supplemental material. If you don’t offer anything else, at least have business cards.

Even though conferences have changed, the research poster’s importance hasn’t diminished. Now, instead of simply creating a printed poster presentation, you can also make it for digital platforms. The final output will depend on the conference and its requirements.

This guide covered all the essential information you need to know for creating impactful poster presentations, from design, structure and layout tips to oral presentation techniques to engage your audience better .

SETTING UP YOUR POSTER FILE:

Create a PowerPoint Presentation Poster by creating a custom size in Page Setup.

  • Open Microsoft PowerPoint. Choose File>>View
  • Select New Blank Presentation Go to File>>New Blank Presentation
  • Select: Design In the Slide size for option, choose Custom Slide Size. Set the height, width, and orientation (landscape or portrait). Click OK.
Know your requirements: Is there a specific size required?  Do you know the poster size of your poster board?

4. Save your file: Choose File>>Save to save your presentation. Make sure you save the file in the same version of PowerPoint you used to create the file. DO NOT save in an earlier version.

WORKING WITH TEXT ELEMENTS:

5. Add text Select Insert >>Text Box. Drag to “draw” the text box where you want to place text. Begin typing and text will appear in the text box. The text box will expand as you type. You can also copy and paste text from an MSWord doc.

“Text Box” is always used since text requires a container in PowerPoint. You need to create a separate Text Box for each separate piece of text that you want to manage/move independently.

100-point font is about an inch high. If you don’t see the size you want from the drop-down menu, type in the correct size. If your poster file will be scaled up when printed, the text will be too. Example: 50 point text will become 100 point if scaling to 200%.

• You can resize the text box/container at any time by moving your cursor over the corner or center handles (cursor changes to double headed arrow) and dragging. • You can move the entire box by moving your cursor over an edge until it turns into a four-way arrow. • Use the green dot to rotate the box

8. Inserting Images Select Insert>>Picture>> From File from the menu bar You can import most standard graphic formats such as: (jpeg, gif, tiff, bmp, etc.). Avoid “copy and paste” as a method for adding graphics—this often results in a low-resolution copy of the image. The best way is to insert the image.

WORKING WITH IMAGES: Plan ahead. When creating a graphic in your imaging software program, set the image resolution to 150 dpi. This will give you the best quality image.

9. Manipulating images: Once your image appears in your poster, you can adjust the size by moving the handles. The corner handles keep the same aspect ratio; the side handles do not. Select a picture, then go to Format Picture on the menu bar. You can crop, adjust brightness, etc.

CREATING A BACKGROUND FOR THE POSTER:

10. Make a solid color background: Select Design >>Background Styles. Click on the Background option within the drop down menu to choose from even more color choices. The best backgrounds are ones that provide the maximum contrast to the text placed on it. dark background = white text white background = black text

Image backgrounds can affect the readability of your text.

CREATING BOXES, LINES, ARROWS:

11. Adding lines, arrows, boxes, etc. Select Insert>>Shapes and choose the graphic element you would like to insert. Click and drag the arrow to place the element, double click to edit in the Format tab.
