A necromancer stands on top of a boulder and directs an army of the dead in Diablo 4.

Necromancers are the summoners of Diablo 4 , but that’s not their entire identity. Like much of Diablo 4 , Necromancers are far more complex than you’d initially imagine. So when you can summon minions to do your bidding or sacrifice them for major stat bonuses, how do you know what to do? That’s where we come in, with our suggestions of the best Necromancer builds for Diablo 4 season 3 .

Necromancers are able to summon Skeletons and Golems. But they’re also able to cast Sorcerer-like spells dealing in the creepier sides of magic. They can sling bones and drain blood from foes. They can even project poison blight on the ground. And, yes, they can sacrifice minions for incredible bonuses with the Book of the Dead.

In this Diablo 4 guide, we’ve gathered and simplified the best Diablo 4 Necromancer builds for season 3 . If you need even more information on item affixes or other more complex ideas, we’ve been sure to link out to the more detailed versions of these builds, as well as where to find their original creators.

Best Necromancer leveling build in Diablo 4 season 3

A Necromancer standing in front of three bloody skeletons in Diablo 4 concept art

This build is based off GhazzyTV ’s Necromancer leveling guide at IcyVeins , and is purely for leveling: i.e., allocating your 58 skill points between levels 1 and 50. If you want more detailed information about the item affixes you want to look for on your gear, or which other Legendary powers are great for your build, check out the original IcyVeins guide .

Best skills for leveling

Necromancer leveling guides use the absolute powerhouse of a skill: Bone Spear . Bone Spear is both extremely versatile and deals massive damage, hence why we rank it up so quickly. In this build, you’ll also use Bone Splinters , Corpse Explosion , Blood Mist , and Decrepify — as well as both Golem and Skeleton skills.

Here are the best skills for a Necromancer leveling build, organized by the exact order you should purchase them in — bearing in mind that some skills require you to allocate a number of skill points in the tree in order to unlock them. As such, you’ll need to unlock new skills before enhancing existing ones.

Note : GhazzyTV’s guide recommends starting with Blood Surge and transitioning to Bone Spear after level 15.

  • Bone Splinters / Enhanced Bone Splinters
  • Blood Surge (rank 1-5) — Replace with Bone Spear (rank 1-5) after level 15
  • Corpse Explosion / Enhanced Corpse Explosion
  • Hewed Flesh (rank 1-3)
  • Grim Harvest (rank 1-3)
  • Enhanced Bone Spear / Supernatural Bone Spear
  • Corpse Explosion (rank 2-5)
  • Skeletal Warrior Mastery (rank 1-3)
  • Plagued Corpse Explosion
  • Serration (rank 1-3)
  • Compound Fracture
  • Evulsion (rank 1-3)
  • Unliving Energy
  • Ossified Essence
  • Unliving Energy (rank 2-3)
  • Fueled by Death (rank 1-3)
  • Compound Fracture (rank 2-3)
  • Imperfectly Balanced (rank 1-3)
  • Decrepify / Enhanced Decrepify
  • Necrotic Carapace (rank 1-3)
  • Death’s Reach (rank 1-3)
  • Amplify Damage (rank 1-3)
  • Decrepify (rank 2-3)

Best Book of the Dead setup for leveling

While sacrificing your minions is the common play for endgame builds, most builds actually use minions while leveling, and this build is not different. Here are the minions you should use for this build:

  • Melee Skeletons – Reapers
  • Mage Skeletons – Cold
  • Golem – Bone (change to Iron as you get closer to 50)

Best Legendary Aspect for Necromancer leveling build

GhazzyTV’s build only recommends a single Legendary Aspect while leveling.

When you first start your new character, complete one dungeon first in order to collect its Aspect . Then place it on a piece of gear (ideally jewelry, when possible). Just keep in mind that you should replace this Legendary with a new version using the imprint system every few levels.

  • Splintering Aspect (Guulrahn Slums dungeon in Dry Steppes) — Bone Spear’s primary attack makes enemies hit beyond the first Vulnerable for 1.5 seconds. Bone Shards from Bone Spear deal 50% bonus damage to vulnerable enemies and pierce them.

Necromancer Season 3 build for endgame — Sever

This build is based off of MacroBioBoi ’s Necromancer endgame guide at MaxRoll.gg , and is a general endgame guide capable of finding success in all activities. This guide assumes that you’re over level 50, have access to all 58 skill points, and are making progress on your Paragon Boards. If you want more detailed information about the item affixes you want to look for on your gear, or why these Legendary powers are great for your build, check out the original MaxRoll guide .

Best skill points for Necromancer Sever build for endgame

This build utilizes Sever as its core skill and main means of dealing damage. It also utilizes Blood Mist , Bone Storm , Corpse Explosion , Corpse Tendrils , and Decrepify .

Since you need all 58 points for this build, the order you select these skills in doesn’t matter as long as you have the pre-requisite points in the earlier Skill Tree tiers. Here is how you should spend your Skill Points for this build:

  • Reap / Enhanced Reap
  • Sever (rank 1-5) / Enhanced Sever / Paranormal Sever
  • Blood Mist / Enhanced Blood Mist / Ghastly Blood Mist
  • Corpse Explosion / Enhanced Corpse Explosion / Blighted Corpse Explosion
  • Decrepify / Enhanced Decrepify / Abhorrent Decrepify
  • Death’s Embrace (rank 1-3)
  • Corpse Tendrils / Enhanced Corpse Tendrils / Plagued Corpse Tendrils
  • Reaper’s Pursuit
  • Crippling Darkness
  • Terror (rank 1-3)
  • Gloom (rank 1-3)
  • Bone Storm / Prime Bone Storm / Supreme Bone Storm
  • Stand Alone (rank 1-3)
  • Memento Mori (rank 1-3)
  • Shadowblight

Book of the Dead setup for Necromancer Sever build

For this build, you’ll want to select Sacrifice for all three minions in your Book of the Dead. Here are the minion types you want to Sacrifice:

  • Skirmishers

Seneschal Governing and Tuning Stones for Necromancer Sever build

Season 3 adds the new Seneschal Construct , which is a fun little companion who follows you around and casts abilities based on which Governing and Tuning Stones you apply to it. Governing Stones determine the Seneschal’s abilities while Tuning Stones amplify those abilities with new effects.

MacroBioBoi recommends these Governing and Tuning Stones:

  • Registered Damage Support
  • Arcing Support
  • Tactical Support
  • Efficiency Support
  • Initiative Support
  • Resource Support

Legendary Powers and Uniques for Necromancer Sever build

To make this build work, you’re going to need powerful Legendary Powers and Unique items to augment your build.

MacroBioBoi recommends these items:

  • Helm : Aspect of Disobedience (dungeon drop)
  • Chest : Aspect of Shielding Storm
  • Gloves : Blighted Aspect (dungeon drop)
  • Pants : Aspect of Might (dungeon drop)
  • Boots : Ghostwalker Mobility Aspect (dungeon drop) or Greaves of the Empty Tomb (Unique)
  • Wand : Offensive Aspect of Ultimate Shadow
  • Focus : Aspect of Decay
  • Amulet : Aspect of Grasping Veins (dungeon drop)
  • Ring 1 : Aspect of Exposed Flesh or Aspect of the Umbral (dungeon drop)
  • Ring 2 : Ring of Sacrilegious Soul (Unique)

If you want to get into the nitty gritty of stat priorities, refer to MacroBioBoi’s original guide .

Paragon Boards for Necromancer Sever build

The Paragon Board system is very complex, and you’ll want to carefully pair your Glyphs with specific boards for your class:

  • Starter Board / Sacrificial Glyph
  • Wither / Control Glyph
  • Flesh-eater / Darkness Glyph
  • Scent of Death / Imbiber Glyph
  • Bloodbath / Territorial
  • Bone Graft / Essence

You should level your Glyphs to 15 in this specific order:

  • Territorial
  • Sacrificial

You can path your own way through the Paragon Boards following these basic guidelines. However, for the best results, follow MacroBioBoi’s path exactly.

How to make a great Necromancer build

A necromancer stands at a campfire next to a text description of the necromancer class in Diablo 4.

Necromancer’s are Diablo 4 ’s main summoning class — although Druids, ironically, had better summons during the game’s launch window. But aside from their army of minions, Necromancers also act as a darker caster, sharing a lot of playstyle DNA with the Sorcerer.

Like all classes, most Necromancer builds boil down to a few Key Passives:

  • Blood/Health

Bone skills — like Bone Spear — hit extremely hard for Necromancers, and are great for chunking down enemies. The Ossified Essence Key Passive modifies that damage even further for players that successfully pool their Essence. Blood builds utilize Blood skills to both keep the Necromancer healthy while dealing big damage. These builds typically end with the Rathma’s Vigor Key Passive .

Shadow builds use Shadow skills to poison enemies with dark essence. Interestingly, the Shadowblight Key Passive not only benefits the Necromancer, but also their minions, making it a more diverse build path. Minion builds are Necromancer’s main bread and butter, but are entirely dependent on how good minions are in the current meta. When they’re useful, these builds end with the Kalan’s Edict Key Passive .

Like all classes, Necromancer builds have other identities to them — like Thorns — but most will converge on one of the four identities highlighted above. What really determines build viability on Necromancer is how you use your minions and the Book of the Dead . If you want to make your own build, decide early on if you want to sacrifice your minions or use them in battle. This will not only determine which skills you’ll want to use, but which of the four Key Passives you want to angle toward.

Best Diablo 4 Necromancer leveling build in season one

Diablo 4 brings back iconic characters from various entries in the series in one massive open-world game. One of the most recognizable character classes since Diablo 2 is the Necromancer.

With a new skill tree and different progression compared to the previous Diablo games, leveling up your Necromancer might take a while. Leveling up your skills can be confusing at first, but the more you read the skill tree, the more synergies you will notice between specific skills, especially ones in similar categories.

Here is our guide to maxing out a Necromancer in Diablo 4 in season one, including which skills to focus on and when to level certain skills.

All Necromancer skills in Diablo 4

Bone spear skill point assignment: levels one to 15, bone spear skill point assignment: reset and reallocate levels one to 30, bone spear leveling skill point assignment: levels 31 to 50, which book of the dead upgrades should you choose, best malignant hearts for the bone spear necromancer in season one.

Necromancer from Diablo 4 surrounded by skeletons

The Necromancer’s skill tree is divided into six main focuses.

  • Decompose: Channels the spell, dealing damage per second and generating corpses.
  • Reap: Deals damage to all enemies in an arc and increases your damage resistance.
  • Hemorrhage: Ruptures the enemy, dealing damage and generating Blood Orbs.
  • Bone Splinters: Shoots bones at the enemies, regenerating Essence with consecutive hits.
  • Blight: Launches Blight at an enemy, leaving a puddle behind that deals damage over time.
  • Sever: Expels the Necromancer’s spirit to attack with a scythe, then returns to their body and launches another attack.
  • Blood Surge: Drains the blood from enemies and launches it in a Blood Nova, dealing additional bonus damage depending on how many enemies were drained.
  • Blood Lance: Fires a lance at an enemy that attaches to them, dealing damage over time.
  • Bone Spear: Launches a spear that pierces through all the enemies it hits.
  • Corpse Explosion: Explodes corpses, dealing damage to all surrounding enemies.
  • Blood Mist: Turns into a bloody mist, becoming immune to damage and moving faster. All enemies hit by the Blood Mist take damage over time.
  • Bone Prison: Traps an enemy in a prison made of Bone, immobilizing them.
  • Iron Maiden: Curses enemies, reflecting a portion of the damage they deal back to them.
  • Decrepify: Curses enemies, slowing their movement and crippling their damage.
  • Corpse Tendrils: Spawns veins from a corpse that pulls in all surrounding enemies, damaging and stunning them.
  • Bone Spirit: Consumes all of your Essence to conjure a spirit that seeks out enemies. Upon contact with enemies, the spirit deals area damage based on the Essence consumed.
  • Army of the Dead: Continuously spawns corpses that detonate themselves when they come in contact with enemies. Refreshes all of your summons.
  • Blood Wave: Creates a massive wave of Blood that deals damage and knocks back all enemies around you.
  • Bone Storm: Conjures a storm of Bone around the Necromancer and the Golem, dealing damage over time for its duration.

Apart from these skills, the Necromancer’s unique feature, Book of the Dead , contains additional skills to support all of their summons. There are three summon skills that the Necromancer can focus on, each with three variations of their own.

  • Skirmishers: 30 percent increased damage in exchange for 15 percent reduced life.
  • Defenders: 15 percent increased life but reduced damage.
  • Reapers: Area of effect slow with a powerful wind-up attack that deals massive damage.
  • Shadow: Deals bonus Shadow damage.
  • Cold: Freezes and slows enemies with Cold damage.
  • Bone: Launches projectiles of Bone that deal high damage at the cost of their own health.
  • Bone: Taunts all enemies around the Golem.
  • Blood: Drains life from surrounding enemies and redirects damage dealt to the Necromancer back to the Golem.
  • Iron: Charges into enemies and stuns them to shut them down.

Later in the game, the Necromancer can choose to forego all of their summons in favor of bonus damage and survivability from the Book of the Dead instead. Certain builds work out better the further you progress into the game, especially once you acquire the Aspects you need.

Best early-game Necromancer leveling build in Diablo 4 Season One

An image showcasing the Necromancer's skill tree in Diablo 4.

The build of choice that works for the smoothest leveling process in Season One, the Season of the Malignant, is the Bone Spear build. We will focus on spells such as Bone Splinters and Blood Surge to maximize the damage from your earliest levels . Once you get Corpse Explosion into the mix at level eight, your damage numbers should skyrocket, allowing you to clear through a lot of early-game content with no problem.

Take Bone Splinters at level one, then Enhanced Bone Splinters at two before pumping five levels into Blood Surge. Afterward, pick up Corpse Explosion and Enhanced Corpse Explosion as soon as possible before alternating each level between Hewed Flesh and Grim Harvest .

By level 15, your build should be:

  • Level one: Bone Splinters
  • Level two: Enhanced Bone Splinters
  • Level three to seven: Blood Surge
  • Level eight: Corpse Explosion
  • Level nine: Enhanced Corpse Explosion
  • Level 10 to 12: Hewed Flesh
  • Level 13 to 15: Grim Harvest

From this point onwards, we will be redirecting our skill points into Bone Spear since it scales better than Blood Surge from this point onwards. Bone Spear also has a much longer range , allowing you to keep a safe distance from dangerous enemies while you deal damage.

Reset your skill points and allocate everything you invested in Blood Surge to Bone Spear , then allocate the rest of your skill points to the same skills we mentioned above . Now that you’re level 16, you must first focus on maxing out your Bone Spear and Corpse Explosion. This is how you proceed until you reach level 30.

  • Level 16: Enhanced Bone Spear
  • Level 17: Supernatural Bone Spear
  • Level 18: Plagued Corpse Explosion
  • Level 19-22: Corpse Explosion
  • Level 23: Serration
  • Level 24: Compound Fracture
  • Level 25: Evulsion
  • Level 26-27: Serration
  • Level 28-29: Evulsion
  • Level 30: Unliving Energy

As seen above, you must focus on strengthening your Bone Spear as much as possible by allocating points to talents that will benefit your Bone skills. Plagued Corpse Explosion will do additional damage to enemies affected by any form of disable, which fits into this build ideally. We also add Blood Mist and Decrepify to our arsenal of skills from this point onwards.

The focus from here will be improving your Bone skills to the max while making sure your minions scale with the levels you’ve gained. The progression from this point on will last until level 50, beyond which you will enter into the late-game territory and acquire the strongest improvements to your skills.

  • Level 31: Blood Mist
  • Level 32-34: Skeletal Warrior Mastery
  • Level 35: Decrepify
  • Level 36-37: Compound Fracture
  • Level 38-39: Unliving Energy
  • Level 40: Fueled by Death
  • Level 41: Imperfectly Balanced
  • Level 42: Necrotic Carapace
  • Level 43: Enhanced Decrepify
  • Level 44-45: Fueled by Death
  • Level 46-47: Imperfectly Balanced
  • Level 48-49: Necrotic Carapace
  • Level 50: Death’s Reach

With Blood Mist in your offensive skills , you gain a form of immunity if you get caught out in a bad position. Ideally, you want to maintain your distance from your enemie s, which will be amplified with Death’s Reach. Imperfectly Balanced synergizes with Unliving Energy, further increasing your damage depending on the Essence you have stored up.

Your improved minions will benefit from Decrepify, having increased life that can absorb even more damage with the damage reduction aspect of your curse. Fueled by Death and Necrotic Carapace rounds off your offensive and defensive aspects, getting you ready for the post-level 50 grind.

Corpses and a statue inside Necromancer Golem cave.

The final part of this build revolves around your minions of choice for the level grind to 50.

  • Skeleton Warriors: For the choice of Skeleton Warrior, the Reapers would be your ideal option. While the slow and bonus damage is very nice to have, the main reason for choosing the Reapers is the corpse generation aspect. You will always have corpses ready when needed.
  • Skeleton Mages: The choice of Skeleton Mage would be the Cold variant for a couple of reasons. The first reason is crowd control through freezing attacks, and the second reason is rapid Essence generation on attack, ensuring you will have enough Essence in fights.
  • Golems: The best Golem choice would be the Bone Golem. The taunt is a great defensive option, but the additional corpse generation from the Bone Golem will give you even more corpses to explode constantly.

In season one of Diablo 4 , you’ll be working towards collecting Malignant Hearts, and the best ones for the Bone Spear Necromancer include the following:

  • Caged Heart of the Decrepit Aura
  • Caged Heart of the Great Feast
  • Caged Heart of Tempting Fate
  • Caged Heart of the Malignant Pact
  • Caged Heart of the Sacrilegious

I found myself running out of my primary resources too quickly, so I switched to using the Caged Heart of Determination for a while, but if you’re not encountering any resource issues stick to one of the above.

Related: All Malignant Hearts in Diablo 4

That should be all you need to get to level 50 and move on to the late-game grind. Once you get to level 50, many choices open up, and switching to an end-game build is the way to survive in higher World Tiers such as Nightmare and Torment.

Diablo 4 Necromancer best build, skills, aspects, gear and gems

Let’s stick with the classic combination of Skeletal Minions and blowing up corpses.

With Diablo 4 now on Game Pass, a lot of players will no doubt be jumping into the game for the first time, and no doubt the Necromancer will be a pick for many. With that in mind, it's great to learn about the best Necromancer build you can put together.

The fantasy and appeal for this Diablo 4 class is that the Necromancer is able to summon their own minions to fight alongside you in combat.

To assist you in your undead pursuits as a Necromancer, we've put together this guide running through the best Necromnancer build , how to play the Necromancer , as well as the best Necromancer skills, gear, aspects, and gems .

On this page:

How to play as the Necromancer in Diablo 4

Diablo 4 Necromancer best skills

Diablo 4 necromancer best gear, diablo 4 necromancer best aspects, diablo 4 necromancer best gems, how seasons affect necromancer builds in diablo 4.

It’s quite easy to realise that the Necromancer class, when examined and contrasted to all the other classes, such as Sorcerer and Barbarian , is an easy one to play with and comes with many useful tools for your Diablo 4 journey. In this build, we have focused on three major aspects of the Necromancer’s kit.

First, Minions. Necromancer has the capacity of raising Skeletal Minions from corpses that can be formed after killing enemies. There are more than one type – Warriors, Mages, and Golem – and their role is to be one of your main sources of damage. Because of that, try to always keep the maximum of Minions active and don’t forget you can use the raising skill on a corpse to buff them after you reach the cap of Minions raised.

When using this build, the corpses on the ground are as important as the minions you raise from them because of the Necromancer’s skill Corpse Explosion . With it, the battlefield becomes full of landmines since you can cast this skill and explode a corpse dealing damage to enemies. Thanks to some passive and upgrades, exploding corpses buff and Fortify you.

In Diablo 4, Necromancers command skeletal minions

The third aspect of this build focuses on is this class capacity of mitigating damage. In this build, we aren’t going for skills that heal you, so increasing survivability by reducing damage is an important tool.

Now that these three pillars of this build have been explained, we can start talking about the practical side of it. When running this build, you want to always have your skeletons active and use Reap to proc its passive that reduces the damage you take and forms corpses. Another skill you should always pop when is available is Decrepify .

Once you start generating Essence points, your top priority is to use Blight on enemies to buff your attacks against them. When the field begins to get filled with corpses, then, it’s time to use Corpse Explosion . Keep in mind that you should only use this skill if your Minions look healthy. Otherwise, prioritise raising a new Minion instead of exploding the corpse.

Your ultimate Army of the Dead is a great source of damage as well and should be used as soon as it’s available when facing multiple enemies or a boss.

Current meta and community picks for best Necromancer build in Diablo 4

Since Diablo 4's release in 2023, it's undergone various changes and overhauls, whilst also having tons of rebalancing, new gear, activities and more being added. On top of the season-specific systems, there's a lot to consider every season as to what builds are best to use.

When it comes to what's gaining traction right now, website Wowhead features a set of top-tier builds you can try, with builds for the Blood Surge ability - focused on area of effect attacks - as well as the Bone Spear ability, which they describe as a 'Super high-damage single-target build'. That is to say, it's a great build for damage output, so this might be one you'd want to take into boss battles or any similar content with lots of strong enemies.

skill assignment diablo 4 necromancer

Looking at the latest balance changes for the Necromancer, there are a number of changes the class saw in early March 2024 that boosted the damage dealt and health of several of summonable minions, including Skeleton Skirmishers , Defenders, Reapers, Shadow Mages, and more. Beyond this, there are various other buffs with only a couple of nerfs, and with this patch in particular, it results in one of the more extensive lists of balance changes out of the five classes.

With a consistently evolving game like Diablo 4, you can be sure that each class will continue to receive all manner of balance changes and adjustments as the months and years go on. This means however, that there's a ton of experimentation you can get stuck into, and along with the season-specific systems and additions, you'll have new ways to fight and customise your overall playstyle and build.

As explained, this Diablo 4 build focuses on the Necromancer’s capacity of dealing damage as well as receiving damage buffs by consuming corpses and using certain skills. At the same time, another important aspect of this class – and consequently of this build – are the minions you can summon. For this build, it’s important that you pick the Skeletal Mages as soon as you unlock them and select the Cold stance for them, picking the first effect which is generating Essence whenever the Mages hit an enemy with their primary attack.

Now, back to the skills!

  • Reap: As your basic attack, Reap allows you to deal a good amount of damage to single and multiple targets. In addition to that, it increases your Damage Reduction, assisting you in mitigating damage. Enhanced Reap raises briefly your Attack Speed when an enemy dies for this skill, and the Acolyte’s Reap upgrade forms a Corpse from time to time.
  • Blight: When used, you shoot a concentrated blight that deals damage and spreads around enemies and that also deals damage over time. It’s important to get the Enhanced Blight right after to add the effect of Blight slowing enemies. Your next step is to upgrade this skill to Supernatural Blight which increases the damage you and your Minions deal to enemies affected by Blight.
  • Hewed Flesh: One of the passives of this node, Hewed Flesh increases the chance of creating Corpses, which is fundamental for this build.

Corpse and Macabre Node

  • Corpse Explosion: To cast this skill, you need to have a Corpse formed on the ground. If so, you can explode it to deal damage to enemies surrounding it. While Enhanced Corpse Explosion increases the explosion’s radius, the Plagued Corpse Explosion upgrade buffs the explosion’s damage to enemies that are Slowed, Stunned, or Vulnerable.
  • Grim Harvest: This passive prevents you from running out of Essence since it generates some points when a Corpse is consumed.
  • Fueled by Death: To take advantage of the fact that you want to explode Corpses constantly, you should pick this passive which increases your damage for some time after you consume a Corpse.
  • Decrepify: Places a curse on the ground slowing enemies in the area as well as decreasing their damage. By unlocking Enhanced Decrepify , you have the chance to stun enemies affected by the curse. The Abhorrent Decrepify upgrade gives you the chance to have your active Cooldown reduced by some seconds when enemies afflicted by the curse are hit.
  • Skeletal Mage Mastery: Because we are prioritising Skeletal Mages as your minions, this passive is quite important since it increases their damage and life!

Necromancer's Skill tree in Diablo 4 gives access to a good number of different types of skills

  • Necrotic Carapace: This is another passive that helps you capitalise on Corpses. Whenever a Corpse is formed, whether as a result of a skill of yours or of Minions, you get Fortified for some percentage of your Base Life.

Ultimate Node

  • Army of the Dead: When used, this skill summons Skeletons that explode dealing damage to enemies. With its first upgrade, Prime Army of the Dead , you increase the chance of forming Corpses. The last upgrade called Supreme Army of the Dead adds to the skill the effect of also raising your Skeletal Warriors and Skeletal Mages.
  • Stand Alone: This passive increases your survivability by increasing Damage Reduction based on how many Minions are active.

Key Passives Node

  • Kalan’s Edict: Considering how important your Minions are for your damage output, this passive becomes extremely important, because it increases their Attack Speed after you spent a brief time avoiding damage.

When it comes to picking the best pieces of armor, jewels, and weapons for this Necromancer build, there are a few elements you should look for in Diablo 4. Gear with Damage to Slow Enemies, Damage Over Time, and Damage to Close Enemies are extremely useful to this build, synergizing well with Reap and Blight. Next, we have less specific affixes, such as Basic Skill Damage , which is a solid option.

Now, if you’re in doubt about which main attribute you should look for in your pieces of gear, then, you should focus on Intelligence and Willpower to increase Skill Damage and Resource Generating.

Diablo 4 Necromancer must look for pieces of equipment that improves the class's skills

Aspects are a great system in Diablo 4 and they can improve exponentially this your damage, survivability, and crowd-control capability. Because Blight plays a key role in this Necromancer build, the Aspect of the Void is great, since it adds to the skill the effect of pulling enemies into the area affected by it. Another good aspect that synergizes well with this build is the Aspect of the Frenzied Dead that increases Minions’ Attack Speed when they damage an enemy.

A couple of solid options that work for you, in general, are the Aspect of Hardened Bones that increases Minions’ Damage Reduction, the Coldbringer’s Aspect that gives to your Skeletal Mages the capacity of casting Blizzard causing Cold damage and Chilling enemies, and the Cadaverous Aspect that increases the damage of your core skills after consuming a corpse.

Diablo 4's aspect system comes with great options for Necromancers

If you're struggling to keep your Necromancer alive, then you might also want to consider equipping the Aspect of the Embalmer , as it adds the chance to spawn a healing Blood Orb when a corpse is consumed.

Among all the types of gems one can find in Diablo 4, there are some good options for this Necromancer build. Sapphire , when used in a weapon, increases Critical Strike Damage to Crowd Controlled Enemies. Another good option for weapons is the Amethyst which increases Damage Over Time.

Now, for armor pieces, Sapphire is also great because it increases Damage Reduction when Fortified. A second option is Ruby which increases your Maximum Life when used in an armor piece.

In Diablo 4, gems are important to improve the Necromancer build

As with many other live service titles, Diablo 4 features a seasonal model that rotates in new content and features, as well as a variety of new rewards to hunt down for each of the classes.

Of these new additions, there's a selection of new items to acquire that you'll be able to collect, equip, and continue to use into the future for as long as you want. However, other content - such as season-specific features and rewards - won't persist into future seasons.

As an example of this, during Season of the Construct, you can acquire and upgrade a spider-like Construct companion that'll join you in combat with a suite of abilities and perks to utilise, but once the season comes to a close, that will no longer be usable.

An example of one of the season-specific systems - this is for Season of the Construct, and shows the customisation and upgrades that can be applied to the Construct companion you can utilise during the season.

Despite that though, certain season-specific items have later returned in a new form , whether that be some of the Malignant Hearts from Season 1 being reprised as Rings, or a select few Vampiric Powers from Season 2 coming back as Legendary Aspects.

With the ongoing nature of Diablo 4, and its upcoming expansion, there's no doubt plenty of new builds and items to try and a meta that'll likely always see a fairly sizeable shakeup every few months.

Video Guide

Please note that the video guide is meant to illustrate gameplay and general build mechanics rather than act as a precise build guide. This written guide is always the most up-to-date and accurate version, since updating the video with new information is not possible.

Strengths and Weaknesses

  • Incredible damage output
  • Fast & comfortable with proper gear
  • Capable of Tier 100 Nightmare Dungeon & Uber Lilith
  • Somewhat squishy
  • Requires specific gear & aspect powers to fully self-sustain without corpse consumption
  • Can feel a bit clunky & slow until you get better gear

To see how this build compares to the other builds on our site, you can check out our build tier lists .

Build Variants

A build variant is a modified version of an existing build that changes some aspects of it, such as the damage type, specific skills or passives, and even certain items like different Uniques or Legendary Aspects.

Season of the Construct

Season 3 patch updates.

The following list details the changes in the  Season 3 Update (1.3.0) that are specific to this build. Check the Changelog for all the other guide updates.

Patch 1.3.0

  • No direct changes but the removal of Abbatoir of Zir has made this build the expected best Necromancer build for the season!

Seneschal Construct Companion Powers

The Season 3 theme introduces a Seneschal Construct Companion that can deal damage or provide support to complement your character. Equip the Seneschal with two Governing Stones to activate their abilities, and then link them to three Tuning Stones each to augment the abilities. There are 12 different Governing Stones and 27 different Tuning Stones that can be found in Vaults scattered across Sanctuary. Fuse together duplicate stones to level them up, increasing the potency of Governing Stones or adding augments to Tuning Stones.

Listed below are the recommended Governing Stones and their linked Tuning Stones for the Blood Lance Necromancer, ranked by importance. The Governing stones you want to use for this build will be Lightning Bolt, and Tempest.

  • Resource Support: The Construct will generate Essence for us on a consistent basis.
  • Evernight: Grants +4 to all skills for a very short duration. You will want this on both skills the Construct uses to optimize uptime to increase damage output.
  • Safeguard: Provides extra Damage Reduction.
  • Duration: Extends the duration of the skill which is best combined with Lightning Bolt and the use of both Resource and Safeguard.
  • Breaking: Instantly destroys Barrier effects and makes enemies vulnerable.
  • Arcing: Makes the ability hit 10 additional enemies. Best combined with Breaking to make the effect hit more enemies.
  • Efficiency: Provides extra Critical Strike Chance.

When it comes to the active skills for the Construct, it truly does not matter for this build. Whichever ability provides the fastest or most reliable hits on enemies will the best choices for Bone Spear.

Skill Tree Points and Skill Bar

Blood Mist

The following tables show the full allocation of Skill Points for the Bone Spear Necromancer build. The first table has the most important 48 points to start the build. The second table has the remaining 10 points that are allocated once you obtain all Skill Points from Renown .

Book of the Dead

We will be sacrificing both our Mage Skeletons and our Golem. The decision to sacrifice the Melee Skeletons, however, comes down to personal preference and how their survival looks at higher endgame content. Playing in a party can impact this decision as well. Below you’ll find the details covering all aspects of how we utilize the Book of the Dead for the Bone Spear Necromancer.

Skeletal Warrior Mastery

  • Mage Skeletons ; sacrificing the Cold Mages grants us increased damage to Vulnerable enemies. The build reliably making enemies Vulnerable makes this the best choice.

Paragon Board

The Paragon progression system unlocks at Level 50 and provides a vast amount of character power. On the Paragon Board, bonuses range from minor stats on  Magic Nodes  to more powerful  Rare Glyphs  and  Legendary Nodes .

As you path towards Glyph Sockets and  Legendary Nodes , you should prioritize Damage, Intelligence, Resistance, and Life for Normal and  Magic Nodes. Glyph radius increases as you level them up. Therefore, if you cannot fulfill Additional Bonus requirements early on, skip allocating extra nodes for now. It’s also important to point out that you might not have the Glyph you want when you reach your first socket; if that is the case, simply slot in any Glyph providing any beneficial stats for you until you get the correct one.

Listed below are images of the pathing you should take along with the locations of the Glyphs and order you should choose your Paragon Boards past the initial Starting Board.

Ready to create your own mini-army in Blizzard's latest big adventure?

Diablo 4 has five classes to choose from, and the Necromancer returns as one of these playable archetypes. Necromancers raise the dead, using blood, bone, and shadow to weave together terrible attacks while skeletons rise and mob enemies.

I've put together a guide on the Necromancer's abilities, so you can decide where to invest your experience as you play. Bear in mind that Diablo 4 is even more of an ongoing game than past Diablo titles from Blizzard Entertainment. That means you should expect balancing changes and updates to how skills work, and I'll be working to update this guide if anything changes.

Diablo 4 Necromancer Skills

Necromancer Skills are divided into a few categories: Basic Skills, Core Skills, Corpse and Macabre Skills, Corruption Skills, Summoning Skills, Ultimate Skills, and Key Passives.

These abilities are structured like with other classes, meaning Necromancers can level up any basic (non-passive and non-Ultimate) skill to a fifth level, while activated skills culminate in a choice of two mutually-exclusive upgrades.  Necromancers' main resource is Essence, which is collected by using Basic Skills and spent using other skills.

Necromancers also have access to the Book of the Dead , unlocking ways of customizing their Skeletal Warriors, Skeletal Mages (unlocked at Level 15), and (Golems unlocked at Level 25). They increase certain attributes by weakening others, including gaining large personal bonuses in exchange for sacrificing the ability to summon Minions at all.

Like other classes, it's free to reset the Necromancer's skill points until level 15, so you can experiment early on. After that, it starts to get expensive, costing an ever-increasing amount of gold per skill reset, so think carefully. The Necromancer was level-capped to Level 25 in the Open Beta, but goes all the way up to Level 100 in the full game.

One of the most popular classes in Diablo is the Necromancer. If you want to command the powers of the undead, then read on as our Necromancer class guide will give you all the details that you need to be able to rock this class in Diablo 4 , including some Open Beta build ideas.

The Necromancer has been a fan-favorite class across all Diablo games, and this version of the class is shaping up to deliver in this new game as well. With the changes coming to Diablo 4, the Necromancer could be one of the most powerful classes in the game with the right build.

While you're here, if you're looking for more Diablo 4 content, then be sure to check out our other guides, such as our Diablo 4 Sorcerer guide , our Diablo 4 beta guide , as well as our Diablo 4 seasons roadmap guide .

What is the Necromancer Book of the Dead in Diablo 4?

As we mentioned earlier, Necromancers have access to summon undead minions. This is done through a mechanic via the Book of the Dead. There are three types of minions that you'll have the ability to summon: Skeletal Warriors, Skeletal Mages, and Golems.

For each of these minion types, you'll have a few different talent choices to how each of them play, or you can even have the option to forego using them to gain passive buffs for your character instead.

Here are the passives for each of the minion types.

Diablo 4 Necromancer Book of the Dead

Skeletal Warriors

  • Upgrade 1: You can raise an additional Skirmisher.
  • Upgrade 2: Each time you critically strike, your Skirmishers next attack critically strike as well. Can only happen every 3 seconds.
  • Sacrifice: Your critical strike chance is increased by 5%, but you can no longer raise Skeletal Warriors.
  • Upgrade 1: Every 8 seconds, your Defenders negate the next instance of direct damage they would take.
  • Upgrade 2: Increase the amount of thorns that Defenders inherit from you from 30% to 50%.
  • Sacrifice: You gain 15% non-physical resistance, but you can no longer raise Skeletal Warriors.
  • Upgrade 1: Reaper attacks against enemies who are Immobilized, Slowed, Stunned or Vulnerable reduce the cooldown of their powerful wind-up attack by 2 seconds.
  • Upgrade 2: Reapers have a 10% chance to carve the flesh off enemies, forming a corpse. This cannot happen on the same enemy more than once every 5 seconds.
  • Sacrifice: You deal x10% increased Shadow Damage, but you can no longer raise Skeletal Warriors.

Skeletal Mages

  • Upgrade 1: Shadow Mage attacks have a 10% chance to Stun for 2.13 seconds. This cannot happen on the same enemy more than once every 5 seconds.
  • Upgrade 2: Shadow Mages fire an additional shadow bolt every 6th attack.
  • Sacrifice: Your maximum essence is increased by 15, but you can no longer raise Skeletal Mages.
  • Upgrade 1: Each time your Cold Mages damage enemies with their primary attack, you gain 2 essence.
  • Upgrade 2: Enemies who are Frozen by or damaged while Frozen by your Cold Mages primary attack are made Vulnerable for 3 seconds.
  • Sacrifice: You deal x15% increased damage to Vulnerable enemies, but you can no longer raise Skeletal Mages.
  • Upgrade 1: Reduce the life cost of your Bone Mages attacks from 15 to 10%. After being alive for 5 seconds, Bone Mages deal 40% increased damage.
  • Upgrade 2: Each time a Bone Mage dies from its own attack, they leave behind a corpse and Fortify you for # seconds.
  • Sacrifice: Your Overpower damage is increased by 30%, but you can no longer raise Skeleton Mages.
  • Upgrade 1: Each time your Golem takes up to 20% of its maximum Life as damage, it sheds a corpse.
  • Upgrade 2: Your Golem gains 10% maximum Life and the amount of thorns they inherit from you is increased from 30% to 50%.
  • Sacrifice: You gain 10% increased attack speed, but you lose the ability to summon a Golem.
  • Upgrade 1: Your Golem absorbs 15% of the damage you would take.
  • Upgrade 2: While healthy, your Golem gains 25% damage reduction and x25% increased damage.
  • Sacrifice: Your maximum Life is increased by 10%, but you can no longer summon a Golem.
  • Upgrade 1: Every 5th Golem attack causes a shockwave, dealing 16% damage to the primary enemy and to enemies behind them.
  • Upgrade 2: Your golem slam attack also makes enemies Vulnerable for 3 seconds.
  • Sacrifice: You deal x30% increased critical strike damage, but you lose the ability to summon a Golem.

Now we don't know 100% at what point you'll be able to have access to this, but given that the rest of the classes get their special mechanic at level 15, it would make sense that this is the case.

Diablo 4 has some new and unique systems when it comes to gearing your characters. While there's a lot of flexibility to gear and play how you want, there's a few tips that we have for you to make sure that will help you along the way.

  • Save your Legendary items that you come across. You're able to extract Legendary Powers from items and put them on Rare pieces of gear.
  • Be on the lookout for any +1 Level of skills pieces of gear. If you find the right skills, you'll be able to save points on your tree for additional passives. This also can allow you to also unlock an extra skill to be used in your Enchantment slots. These are prime candidates for applying legendary powers to.
  • Bigger Number isn't always better. While you may be tempted to slap on anything that has a green up arrow, it may not be beneficial to your build. Stats such as Strength won't be very useful for you, so it may be worthwhile to use slightly lower level gear with better stats.

Once we get some hands-on time with the Necromancer during the open beta test in March, we'll update this with some quick and simple Necromancer builds. We'll work out the best builds for the D4 Necromancer while we're at it, but the beta level cap will make it difficult.

What stats do Necromaners use?

You'll want to aim for both Strength and Intelligence when kitting our a Necromancer in Diablo 4, but the specifics depend on your overall build.

What resources does the Necromancer use?

You'll be using the slowly-regenerating resourece Essense to power most of your Necromancer skills, but Corpses play a major roll, too. These are generated from fallen foes.

What creatures can Necromancers use?

With the Book of the Dead feature, Necromancers can not only raise the dead, but customize them to fill in any weak points of their own build. Skeletal Warriors, Mages, and Golems can be tweaked to act as skirmishers, defenders, reapers, and more.

And that's what we have for you about the Diablo 4 Necromancer! While you're here, why not check out our other Diablo 4 guides, such as our Diablo 4 classes guide , our Diablo 4 Multiplayer guide , and our Diablo 4 PvP guide .

The Diablo 4 Necromancer focuses on harnessing the energies of life and death through blood, bone, and curses. The Raise Skeleton is a Summoning spell that's available by default. It allows the character to spawn a skeletal minion from the corpses of enemies (which are denoted by a red aura around the body).

Moreover, this class has a unique mechanic called Book of the Dead, which becomes available at level 5. As you progress, you'll unlock new minions that can be summoned, as well as certain passive perks that will change how they function.

Likewise, do note that the classes in the game use tiers/groupings for each skill and talent, unlocked once you've spent enough skill points. We list them down in the sections below, further subdividing them based on connected nodes/upgrades. Lastly, don't forget to take a look at the Necromancer talents/perks guide .

Enemies that you kill will sometimes leave corpses behind, denoted by a red aura. You can use these to raise your undead army, or proc effects to annihilate your foes.

Diablo 4 Necromancer Basic skills

Basic skills are always available to cast. They deal fairly low damage, but are your bread-and-butter abilities. They'll help regenerate the Necromancer's essence resource.

Reap -Sweep a scythe in front of you to deal damage; hitting an enemy improves your damage reduction.

  • Acolyte's - Forms a corpse under the first enemy hit; can occur every five seconds.
  • Initiate's - Instantly kills targets below 5% HP; does not work on bosses or players.

Decompose - Deals damage-per-second and forms a usable corpse.

  • Acolyte's - You and your minions deal +10% damage to enemies affected by Decompose.
  • Initiate's - Slows enemies down by 30%.

Hemorrhage - Burst an enemy's blood to deal damage; 20% chance to form a Blood Orb (i.e., pick up to be healed for 15% of your max HP).

  • Acolyte's - +20% attack speed if you're healthy (80% HP or more).
  • Initiate's - Grants a percentage to turn part of your base life into fortify (i.e., bonus amount over HP and 10% reduced damage); extra chance for hits to grant a higher bonus.

Bone Splinters - Shoot three bone projectiles; gain +1 essence for each subsequent time an enemy is hit by the same cast.

  • Acolyte's - Hitting the same enemy at least three times with the same cast grants +8% crit chance for four seconds.
  • Initiate's - 20% chance per hit to apply vulnerable (i.e., 20% increased damage taken).

Diablo 4 Necromancer Core skills

Core skills (and those in subsequent tiers/groupings) cost essence to cast. They're fairly reliable in combat. You'll unlock them once you've spent at least two skill points.

Blood Lance -Throw a lance that deals damage for three seconds to the target and other lanced enemies.

  • Paranormal - While at least two enemies or a boss are affected, gain +15% attack speed and Blood Lance's cost is reduced by 2 essence.
  • Supernatural - Cast Blood Lance eight times and your next use is guaranteed to overpower (i.e., deal bonus damage based on the sum of your current life and fortified life); also spawns a Blood Orb under the first enemy hit.

Blood Surge - Draw blood and expel an AoE nova; damage is increased by 10% per enemy drained, up to 50%.

  • Paranormal - While you're healthy, enemies damage by Blood Surge grant one stack of Overwhelming Blood. At five stacks, your next cast overpowers.
  • Supernatural - Each time an enemy is hit, gain fortify for 1% of your base life; +20% damage if your fortify is over 50% of your max HP.

Blight - Unleash a blight that leaves behind a defiled area.

  • Paranormal - 30% chance to immobilize for 1.5 seconds.
  • Supernatural - You and your minions deal +15% damage to enemies within the Blight.

Sever - Your specter charges forward and returns to you.

  • Paranormal - Every fourth casts applies vulnerable.
  • Supernatural - +2% increased damage on impact for every minion that's active.

Bone Spear - Conjure a bone spear that can pierce through enemies.

  • Paranormal - +5% increased crit chance; if it lands a crit strike, it will fire two additional bone shards.
  • Supernatural - Applies vulnerable for three seconds to the first enemy that's hit.

Diablo 4 Necromancer Corpse/Macabre skills

The Diablo 4 Necromancer skills in this section are for defensive and crowd-control purposes. You can select from this section once you've spent at least six skill points.

Blood Mist - Become immune for three seconds; slows down your movement speed but partially heals you by damaging nearby enemies.

  • Dreadful - Fortifies you for a percentage of your base life each time it hits an enemy.
  • Ghastly - Leave behind a corpse every one second.

Corpse Explosion - Detonate a corpse to deal damage to surrounding enemies.

  • Blighted - Becomes a darkness-infused skill; doesn't explode but creates a miasma that deals shadow damage over six seconds.
  • Plagued - +10% increased damage to those that are slowed, stunned, or vulnerable; bonuses can stack.

Bone Prison - Create a prison made of bones that surrounds a target area for a time.

  • Dreadful - Gain fortify for 5% of your base life for each enemy that's trapped.
  • Ghastly - Make enemies inside the Bone Prison vulnerable.

The Corpse Explosion is one of the most popular Necromancer skills, and with good reason. You'll blow up dead bodies and, in all likelihood, create new dead bodies for even more destruction.

Diablo 4 Necromancer Curse skills

Curse skills generate a debilitating affliction on a target area. These become available once you've spent 11 skill points.

Iron Maiden - Affected enemies take damage each time they deal direct damage.

  • Abhorrent - Heal for 5% of your max HP when an enemy dies while afflicted.
  • Horrid - +15% Iron Maiden damage when at least three enemies are affected.

Decrepify - Slows targets and makes them deal less damage.

  • Abhorrent - Lucky Hit; 15% chance to reduce cooldowns by one second when you hit afflicted foes.
  • Horrid - Instantly kill hostiles at 10% life or less if you or your minions hit them while they're affected by Decrepify; does not work on bosses.

The skills in this section are either of the Corpse or Macabre classification. These can be selected once you've spent 16 skill points.

Corpse Tendrils - Veins burst out of a corpse, pulling enemies and stunning them; does not consume the corpse.

  • Blighted - 20% chance to create a Blood Orb.
  • Plagued - Make enemies vulnerable for three seconds.

Bone Spirit - Use all your remaining essence to conjure a Bone Spirit that seeks out enemies. Deals tremendous AoE damage, boosted further by how much remaining essence was spent.

  • Dreadful - Generate 30 essence over four seconds once it hits an enemy.
  • Ghastly - +10% crit chance.

Diablo 4 Necromancer Ultimate skills

In Diablo 4, Ultimate skills are those that truly make a difference, causing tremendous damage or enhanced effects. You may choose only one Ultimate skill after spending at least 23 skill points.

Blood Wave - Create a tidal wave that deals damage and knocks back enemies.

  • Supreme - Create three Blood Orbs as it travels.

Army of the Dead - Skeletons emerge for seven seconds and explode on surrounding enemies.

  • Supreme - Also raises your Skeletal Warriors and Mages.

Bone Storm - Create bones that swirl around you and your Golem, dealing damage to nearby enemies for 10 seconds.

  • Supreme - +20% crit chance while Bone Storm is active.

Diablo 4 is currently in its beta stage. As such, some of the information here may change as we get closer to the game's official launch on June 6. We'll update this guide accordingly. For now, you may visit our class hub .

Diablo 4: Best Necromancer Skills

Those who chose the Necromancer's path in Diablo 4 can refer to these powerful skills for the best possible results.

The Necromancer class in Diablo 4 has a lot of skills and spells from the Book of the Dead for players to utilize in battle. They are well-rounded combat wise and their skill is in keeping with Necromancy as their name suggests, and they can summon the undead to become their warriors in Diablo 4 .

RELATED: Diablo 4: Wandering Death - How to Beat and Spawn Times

They can utilize the dead on the battlefield to their advantage. Players can have fun blowing up corpses and summoning shards of bones to attack the enemy, they even have a Golem in their skill arsenal to attack. The Necromancer class's skill tree comprises blood, bone, and shadow-based attacks which players can choose from.

10 Hemorrhage

The Hemorrhage skill is a blood-based attack. It allows a player to burst the enemy’s blood and inflict between 25% to 35% damage to that enemy. It's a Basic physical skill that generates 8 Essence for the player and this skill has a 20% likelihood to form a blood orb.

After picking a blood orb, Enhanced Hemorrhage gives players 2 extra Essence for every hit. Acolyte’s Hemorrhage gives players another +20% speed when attacking while they are healthy and the Initiate’s Hemorrhage gives 1.6% base life as Fortify for every time this skill hits an enemy.

9 Decompose

Decompose tears the flesh off of an enemy which deals around 35% damage every second and creates a corpse with the flesh every two and half seconds. This skill allows players to regain Essence spent in the course of battle, while the skill is active players can gain 7 Essence per second.

RELATED: Diablo 4: How to Deal with Invisible Wall Bug

When players upgrade this skill to Enhance Decompose, they gain 10 Essence if an enemy dies while they are being decomposed. The second upgrade is the Acolyte’s Decompose which allows players and their minions to deal increased damage to enemies that are decomposing. The final skill upgrade slows down an enemy by 30% making them easier to kill .

8 Bone Spear

Players can easily conjure up a Bone Spear with this Core Necromancer skill from the ground that deals serious damage to enemies while simultaneously piercing through them. However, it would cost a player 25 Essence when they use this skill against the enemy.

When a player activates the Enhanced Bone Spear, it breaks into 3 shards when it is destroyed and deals some damage each to nearby enemies. The next skill upgrade increases the likelihood of a player landing a Critical Hit by 5%. Players can fire 2 additional bone shards if the spear performs a critical strike after it is destroyed.

7 Blood Surge

The Blood Surge skill draws blood from the enemy with veins showing on the battlefield while simultaneously expelling a Blood Nova inflicting damage to the nearby enemies. The Nova damage increases by 10% for every enemy drained up to 50% and the skill cost up to 30 Essence.

Enhanced Blood Surge heals a player for 2.5% of their maximum life when they draw blood from their enemies. Players gain 1 stack of Overwhelming Blood when the enemy is damaged by Blood Nova when they upgrade to Paranormal Blood Surge.

6 Bone Storm

This is one of the Ultimate Necromancer skills that causes a swirling storm of bone to enclose players and their summoned Golem dealing serious damage to their enemies for 10 seconds. This skill requires a 60 Cooldown before a player can use this skill again.

RELATED: Diablo 4: Beginner Tips For Players Who Have Never Played Diablo

This skill has two upgradeable levels, the Prime and Enhanced Bone Storm. The Prime Bone Storm reduces the damage a player receives by 15% while this skill is active and Supreme Bone Storm increases a player’s chance of a critical strike by 20% while Bone Storm is active.

5 Corpse Explosion

Corpse Explosion inflicts damage to nearby enemies around the point of detonation. The impact range of this skill increases when players upgrade this skill to Enhanced Corpse Explosion. The Corpse Explosion skill helps players to utilize their surroundings to achieve victory in battle.

The Blighted Corpse Explosion skill causes the corpse to release a vile miasma causing heavy damage to enemies for 6 seconds. It becomes easier to kill enemies when players use the Plagued Corpse Explosion skill as slowed, stunned, or vulnerable enemies suffer additional damage.

4 Army Of The Dead

Necromancy at its peak , this skill allows a player to call the dead buried deep underneath the ground. Volatile skeletons come forth over 7 seconds that explode when they are around enemies. They simultaneously inflict 45% damage to surrounding enemies.

Volatile Skeletons have a chance to leave a corpse behind after exploding when a player uses Prime Army of the Dead. When players use the Supreme Army of the Dead skill, they can easily summon forth the dead, Skeletal Warriors, and Skeletal Mages as their minions in battle.

3 Blood Wave

The Blood Wave conjures a tidal wave of blood that inflicts serious damage to the enemies and knocks them back. Players can use this skill to push back enemies surrounding them, this makes it a lot easier to launch attacks on the enemy. This skill requires 50 Cooldown before it can be re-used.

RELATED: Diablo 4: Best Rogue Skills

The Prime Blood Wave temporarily slows the enemy for a brief period making it easy to land attacks on the affected enemies. Supreme Blood Wave is the highest tier of this skill that leaves behind 3 Blood Orbs as it passes through the enemies.

2 Bone Spirit

The Bone Spirit skill consumes all of a player’s Essence to conjure a spirit of bone that searches for enemies exploding when they reach the enemy. The explosion inflicts some damage on the target enemy and other nearby enemies.

This skill enables players to generate 30 Essence over 4 seconds after this skill hits an enemy when they use Dreadful Bone Spirit. The likelihood of landing a critical hit on an enemy increases when a player uses the Ghastly Bone Spirit skill to deal damage to the enemy.

Blight is a Core Shadow skill that players can use to release a concentrated Blight that deals damage to enemies. Using the Blight skill will result in a defiled area that temporarily inflicts severe damage to the enemy within the blight for 6 seconds.

Using Enhanced Blight temporarily slows the enemies making it easier for players to dodge or evade their attacks while Paranormal Blight may immobilize enemies for a short time. The highest upgrade of this skill allows players and their minions to deal additional damage to enemies inside the Blight.

Diablo 4 is currently available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S.

The Diablo 4 Necromancer was the fifth and final class to be revealed for the upcoming game, and with that reveal came some information on how it will function in-game and what changes were made from the version introduced in Diablo 2 over 20 years ago. So if you're looking for an explanation about the Diablo 4 Necromancer based on what we know so far, check our breakdown of the resources, weapons, and skills.

Diablo 4 Necromancer Resources

Diablo 4 Necromancer Resources

To use certain skills in Diablo 4 , you will need to build up your classes' resource, but the Necromancer is special in that it has two. Firstly is Essence, which can be built with basic attacks and allows you to use your most powerful skills. There are also Corpses, which is the secondary resource that allows the class to raise their minions, such as skeletons and golems, along with setting traps.

Diablo 4 Necromancer Weapons

Diablo 4 Necromancer Weapons

The main weapon type for the Necromancer is the reaper's scythe, and this class is the only one in the game that can utilise it. This makes it the optimum weapon for the Necromancer, but you can also use other weapons such as swords, daggers, wands, focuses, and shields.

Diablo 4 Necromancer Skills

Diablo 4 Necromancer Skills

There are four Necromancer playstyles that we know about currently: Blood, Bone, Darkness, and The Army. Each one has their own skills to use that defines how you play the game. We know some of the skills for each of the playstyles so far, so we'll run through them.

Blood Skills

  • Blood Surge - Draws blood from enemies in an area of effect (AoE) that creates a blood nova. You will deal more damage by drawing more blood, so it's best when surrounded by lots of enemies.
  • Blood Mist - This is a defensive skill that gives you temporary immunity from damage by transforming into a mist of blood. You can also leech life from enemies when moving through them to heal yourself.

Bone Skills

  • Bone Spirit - Consume all of your Essence to summon a Bone Spirit that seeks nearby enemies and then explodes to deal AoE damage. You can increase the damage of this skill by using more Essence.
  • Bone Prison - Slam your weapon down and create a wall of Bone to surround enemies. The enemies can't break through the prison while it's up, trapping them inside.
  • Bone Spear - Creates a projectile Bone Spear that you can throw at enemies, passing through them. It also splinters into three projectiles if you hit it off a wall.

Darkness Skills

  • Decompose - Channel dark magic and use it on enemies to deal damage over time (DOT) and generate Essence. It can also spawn some corpses so you can summon.
  • Blight - Casts a ball of energy in any direction that explodes on impact, dealing AoE damage and a DOT effect to enemies that stay in the range.

The Army Skills

  • Skeletal Warriors - Summon skeletons from corpses, with a choice of Skirmishers, Defenders, and Reapers.
  • Skeletal Mages - Summon skeleton mages from corpses, with a choice of Shadow, Cold, and Bone mages.
  • Golems - Summon Golems from corpses, with a choice of Bone, Blood, and Iron Golems.
  • Sacrifice - Allows you to kill all your summons to make yourself stronger for a period of time.

Those are the only skills we know of at the moment, but as we get closer to release, we'll likely learn more about them.

That's all for our breakdown of the Diablo 4 Necromancer class, and now you know a little about it will function before release.

We also have a breakdown of all the Diablo 4 classes , featuring everything we know about them so far.

Season 4. Skeletal Mages

Hi everyone,

For this moment in the game there are three different types of skeletal mages (shadow, cold and bone). Shadow and bone are match to necro itself (skills, gear and paragon) especially with PTR updates, but I can’t say the same about cold mages. The main restriction in this case is type of damage they have - cold. As an alternative for new season I would like to suggest to rework cold mages to blood mages. In this case we will have three types of skeletal mages which match to Necromancer’s skills and paragon.

The issue is that blood skill deal physical damage. Thus, there is no “blood damage” type (just blood skills being categorized as blood for the purposes of affixes and enchants).

However, it would have been interesting if blood was a hit + bleed effect and we had mages to match. Still would be physical, but it would be something other than just plain old hit damage alone.

Or rather than focusing on their damage type, they would work like how blood spec does, being based around overpower mechanics. Blood mages could be designed to have overpower mechanic built in as well as book of the dead options for other blood mechanics such as chance to drop blood orbs on hit and such, or buffs when a blood orb is picked up.

Cold effects are an unfinished concept on Necromancers. There are a couple but they’re pretty much islands without any synergy.

DECAY AND ROT!! Mages FTW lol

What would that achive? Not like you could increase thire elemntal damage with stats on gear. Maybe if they would have the coresponding skill tags, which they don’t. Also mages rarely had matching damage types in previous games. In D2 necro had bone, poison and summoning skills, while haveing blood golem, but no other blood skills, fire golem but no other fire skills and fire, cold, lightning and poison mages while gaving again no other fire, cold or lightning skills. In D3 mages shoot an unknown type of element, probably phisical, though with skill runes you could change it to cold and only there increased damage to cold skills effected their damage, in other iterations their damage are fully separate. So fitting their damage type to the necro’s was never an issue, nor a concept.

As I see . The main idea is to make minions build more flexible. In the beginning and up to now preferable skills to learn is Darkness (most of them receive bonuses from having active minions). I also sure that most of necro players choose “shadowblight” key passive instead of “Kalan’s Edict”. Hence, having blood mages would make blood skill-based summoner competitive to darkness one. For example, next step could be changes in blood skills (core and passive) that would have new interactions with minions. As for the type of damage apparently would be physical one (the same as all blood skills). You mentioned Necro playstyle from D2 and D3, but in my opinion it’s incorrect to compare them. Especially D2, due to different game mechanics (immune to different types of damage and physical as well). In D2 mages have elemental dmg on purpose. In combination with curses (lower resist) mages do decent damage. Unfortunately, in D4 we have “disciple” necromancer who learned only two curses…

But even shadow mages are only good for ramping up your Shadowblight stacks, and other passives that have some effect against enemies affected by shadow dmg overtime. They don’t interact in any other special kind of way with any other shadow skill. Mages provide a variety of utility, and allready good damage with minion scaleing and +to mage mastery. Cold is a great deffensive option with the hard CC and porvide resource and a source of makeing monsters vulnerable. about a curses how ever, I would love mages that can cast curses.

Shadow mages enable scaling with aspects like damned and shadow damage in general. They do not, however, apply any shadow dots.

I don’t see the issue. Mage types don’t necessarily correspond to the core skills of Necro across the board. Even though there may be some synergies in play there.

Cold Mages primarily serve as pure utility. Providing a steady stream of CC, essence or vulnerable. If anything they fill this role well and there isn’t much need to change it. I could definitely buy into the addition of some type of Blood Mages though. Outright replacing Cold Mages, not so much.

Mages by definition deal elemental damage. Cold mages are my favourite and advantage here is chill effect that basically cannot be done with physical damage. I like my enemies be frozen (even if they don’t spawn a corpse after death), explode from block of ice and btw frozen enemies are considered chilled - it might work well with slow effect to provide extra defence.

Bloodless Scream, Coldbringer’s Aspect, Azurewrath (now available for Necro), Aspect of Elements etc. - there are some options to play with.

I would leave “them” as they are.

Bloodless Scream, Coldbringer Aspect and Azurewrath don’t really have any synergy. You could use something else and kill enemies in less time than it takes to freeze them. On the ptr, you could get shadow mages up to 50-100 mil per hit, with perfect gear.

Agree, but Frozen effect is mostly for me as a nice cosmetic I enjoy. I have Blood Mist exploding blood drops from Blood Boiling, Blood Lance using Embalmer with Gore Quills and Blood Surge consuming corpses with Cadaverous Aspect - this will eradicate all enemies very fast with no extra damage required.

Yes monsters under an effect that makes them recive more damage applyes to any source of damage, in damned case shadow damage.

Yes I know that, but currently it adds too little with the 30% inherit, and in S4 where it could matter we have quite limited sources, since that stat doesn’t roll on gear anymore, and only have a few nodes on the Wither board and Darkness glyph. I wonder if that also applyes to warriors while under the effect of Aphotic aspect?

Okay yeah, I stand corrected.

Diablo 4: Best Early Game Necromancer Leveling Builds

Quick links, minion master necromancer build, overpowering blood surge build, blood lance hybrid summoner build.

Necromancers retain their identity as summoners and grim magic casters, wielding blood, blight, and bone as one of the five playable classes in the launch of Diablo 4 . They haven't changed too drastically from their iterations, but even veteran fans of the franchise might have trouble getting a good build going.

Diablo 4's Gauntlet Mode Explained

The early portions of Diablo 4 are fairly tame as far as difficulty is concerned. Many players can breeze through the campaign using whatever they feel like using. However, things do start to slow down at around the Level 35 mark, and Necromancers might start running into issues when it comes to surviving and dealing damage. Here are three builds designed around the limited resources available to players by this point of the game.

Updated March 25, 2024 by Marc Santos: Necromancers have received major buffs to their minion builds throughout the course of its first three seasons. Season 3 in particular saw siginificant increases to the damage dealt by all minions, and a number of skills like Decompose and Bone Prison received reworks that make them more beneficial to summoner setups. This guide has been updated to better reflect these changes.

Minions have been on the butt-end of several nerfs and buffs over Diablo 4's development. Luckily, Skeletons have landed on a fairly decent spot in the launch build of the game, and even more so in Season of the Construct. Players can safely build down this path in the early game for some startling success.

Every Skill listed above buffs the effectiveness of Minions in one way or another, though the ones that inflict Shadow damage play a notable role in this build due to how they can affect the damage output of all Skeletons and Golems via the Shadowblight Key Passive .

The build inflicts Vulnerable almost all the time with Paranormal Sever; this feeds into the overall damage output of Reapers by reducing the cooldown of their wind-up attack on top of the base 20% damage bonus dealt against Vulnerable targets. As of Season 3, Acolyte's Decompose now also inflicts Vulnerable, further improving the damage dealt by the player's army against enemies. This also opens up the Core Skill slot for something different, such as Blight .

For Aspects , players should get Reanimation and Blighted as their main ones.

  • Aspect of Reanimation - Minions gain 30-40% increased damage if they've been alive for at least 10 seconds.
  • Blighted - You deal 50-120% increased damage for 6 seconds after the Shadowblight Key Passive damages enemies 10 times.

The build will work fine without them, but these Aspects will become more important as players reach Level 30 and beyond. Blood Getter and Viscous Aspects increase the max number of Skeleton Warriors and Mages respectively, but they are not unlockable in the Codex of Power.

This build uses the many built-in Overpower passives in the Necromancer's Blood skills to disintegrate entire rooms full of monsters in a few Skill casts. Blood Surge is the star of this show, and every ounce of the following setups is designed to make it reliable in almost every situation.

Paranormal Blood Surge greatly increases the consistency of the ability's Overpower procs, and even more so with the Rathma's Vigor Key Passive. However, this build is incredibly Essence-hungry, so players will have to manage their cooldowns and Skill usage more than normal. Season of the Construct rebalanced Blood Surge to gain less bonus damage per enemy drained, but its nova now deals 40% more damage than before by default. This doesn't affect the gameplay much, though expect your damage numbers to change drastically depending on how

Corpse Explosion, Iron Maiden, and Bone Prison can all be used as resource generators with the right upgrades unlocked. However, players should still be using Hemorrhage frequently as it can create Blood Orbs that Fortify the Necromancer. Players must keep themselves Fortified at all times for Overpowered Blood Surge to deal the most damage.

Diablo 4: How to Get Proofs of Might

Blood Golem is here to grab enemy aggro and allow players to keep their HP over 80% for longer. Doing so prevents the bonuses from Coalesced Blood and Tides of Blood from disappearing. Its active component also deals damage to enemies over a large area, making it a great AOE clearing tool for when the player is out of Essence. Blood Golem can be Sacrificed for more max health and replaced with Blood Mist.

For gear, try to get pieces that have the Blood-bathed and Sacrificial Aspects . The former causes Blood Surge to detonate twice , while the latter increases the effect of Sacrifice bonuses . Potent Blood can also help with resource generation if players can keep themselves Healthy. Additionally, use a one-handed weapon with a matching off-hand shield or focus to quickly stack Paranormal Blood Surge.

This is a combination of both builds shown above, and it is essentially a more aggressive version of the Minion Master setup with very high burst damage potential. It uses Overpower bonuses to supercharge Blood Lance, making it capable of one-shotting Level 30+ elites on World Tier 1.

The same playstyle from the Blood Surge build applies here. Players should focus on repeatedly casting Blood Lance until it gets a guaranteed Overpower proc on the next hit. To do this, a ton of Essence is required, which is why the build retains Bone Prison and Corpse Explosion with the Grim Harvest passive.

Transfusion will help keep Minions alive since players won't be taking their associated mastery nodes for this build. This further emphasizes the importance of Blood Orbs for staying alive and increasing damage by keeping the Necromancer Fortified .

Use the Inner Calm and Blood Seeker Aspects to maximize Blood Lance's damage output.

  • Aspect of Inner Calm - Deal 5-10% increased damage for each second you stand still, up to 40%.
  • Blood Seeker's Aspect - Blood Lance deals 15-25% increased damage to its primary target per Lanced enemy.

Players should always be shooting lances at different enemies in order to get the most out of it (unless targets are lined up perfectly against each other).

First ‘Diablo 4’ balance patch is a big win for Necromancers

The goths of Sanctuary have received across-the-board buffs

Diablo 4 has received its first balance patch since launching in Early Access, with update 1.0.2d’s patch notes detailing major buffs to the Necromancer class along with tweaks to every other class.

  • READ MORE: The 8 best PC games you need to play in 2023

In patch notes published over the weekend (June 3), developer Blizzard Entertainment outlined that Diablo 4 ‘s first patch aims to dial down builds that let players “survive unreasonably high amounts of damage,” while bringing some weaker skills up to speed.

For Diablo 4 ‘s Barbarian and Druid class, patch 1.0.2d is bad news. A number of skills and Legendary Aspect modifiers for Barbarian have been dialed down to offer less damage, while Druids will find it harder to keep Grizzly Rage and the bonus from Obsidian Slam running.

However, the update also brings across-the-board improvements to the Necromancer class. This includes a sizeable 20 second cooldown reduction and 15 per cent damage increase for the Necromancer’s Army Of The Dead ultimate ability, along with higher damage rates for Skeleton Warrior and Golem minions.

Elsewhere, Diablo 4 ‘s first patch also introduces some slight changes to dial the Sorcerer back, while the Rogue received a mixed bag of buffs and nerfs.

The patch comes just days after Diablo 4 ‘s Early Access period kicked off on June 2, with the game set to launch in full tomorrow (June 6).

Reception to Blizzard’s latest game has been largely positive, with NME ‘s four-star review describing it as the developer’s “gothic fantasy at its most ambitious”.

“Theory-crafters, lore hounds and newcomers can all find something to love about Diablo 4 — as long as their interests converge on beating demons to death,” reads the review. “Gruesomely satisfying combat, expansive skill trees and a bustling open world make Diablo 4 a delightfully gory way to kick off summer, and a must-play for ARPG fans.”

In other news, Halsey and BTS’ Suga are releasing a new version of ‘Lilith’ to celebrate Diablo 4 ‘s launch.
