Do you ever wonder what goes on in students’ WhatsApp groups?

 By  Elisabetta Lando

“Everything has been stripped away from us – the social aspects of in-person learning, the discussions with mates outside the lecture halls, walking and talking after lectures.”(  Jisc Student digital experience insights survey 2020/1)

This student comment, from the Jisc national Student digital experience survey, is typical of what students have been saying since the start of the pandemic. The need to build up online  student communities  within universities, is something that has been much explored across the sector over the last two years. However, student themselves have always created support networks with each other on social media platforms, such as Whatsapp and Facebook, and with the pandemic that has obviously continued:

‘As of February 2020, WhatsApp had two billion users around the world. When the COVID-19 lockdowns came into force in late March 2020, usage of WhatsApp around the world had grown by 40% ‘  Is WHATSAPP an unsung hero in the CoVID 19 education crisis?  (accessed December 2021)

Yet working alongside some of the student digital advisers, I have been increasingly made aware of some issues. For example, WhatsApp is tied to mobile numbers so if students join they share personal data with groups of people they maybe haven’t even met. Indeed in a City online Student debate (April 2021) on  ‘Cameras off or Cameras on’  students mentioned concerns about these informal ‘ Uni study groups’. They wondered if they could be in any way supported by the university. However, by their very nature these groups can in no way be ‘monitored’ :

‘A  WhatsApp  group can exist without anyone outside the group knowing of its existence, who its members are or what is being shared, while end-to-end encryption makes it immune to surveillance from third parties’  What’s wrong with Whatspp. Guardian 2021)

So that means that all sort of unknowable stuff is going on in these groups, mostly good for sure but some probably bad. Furthermore, some students, possibly because they are not part of a friendship group, are excluded.

An obvious alternative then is for universities, or colleges, to actively encourage students to use their own supported platforms to set up safe and inclusive students only groups. At City, for example, it could be something like  Teams  while other institutions have encouraged the use of   Discord . However, maybe it is not the actual platform that is the point here. Should the focus be really on how can students be supported to work together online safely and effectively? According to Jisc, students themselves are very eager for  their university courses to have some  built in community time. This is in itself  an opportunity to raise awareness and good practice around online group interaction(1):

‘Quizzes, polls and time set aside for socialising before a class’ (Listening to student voices. Jisc Student digital experience insights survey 2020/1)

Ultimately, students will probably always want to join groups that are ‘off -grid’ and not part of an institution. Therefore, supporting students to think about things like setting up a code of conduct, understanding what a group does (not the place to ask about assignment deadlines for example), developing good communicative skills and more should be part of their educational experience. So shining a light into what is happening in these social media spaces could be just one of the ways to build up meaningful and effective students communities that are so much needed.

Do share your ideas and experiences around this in the comment box below.

WhatsApp and campus trails: supporting students in building peer support networks

Group activities and social networks help students to feel supported. Here’s how to facilitate interactions that build peer-support networks

Establishing positive peer relationships is vital for students’ self-confidence and well-being and for developing resilience. The benefits of student peer support groups include building effective communication skills, increasing motivation and confidence in their abilities through knowledge exchange and problem-solving.

Opportunities to socialise have changed for everyone in the past two years, resulting in changes in student behaviour. With this in mind, we have embedded a variety of new practices, into our teaching to facilitate student socialising both in person and using digital tools.

How the pandemic has broken down students’ natural social bonds

At university, most students live independently for the first time. Many take on part-time work, experience new cultures in a new city and meet people from different social and cultural backgrounds. They may study abroad, engage in overseas field courses or join sports clubs and societies that widen their view of the world.

So when these opportunities for developing vital social skills are disrupted, as happened because of lockdowns, for example, the effect on young adults is profound. Last year, the UK’s Office of National Statistics reported that loneliness was highest in areas with high concentrations of young people , aged 16 to 24 years, and the unemployed.

The shift to online or hybrid teaching during the pandemic also removed many social aspects of teaching and learning for students, such as group seminars, pair working in laboratories and tutor groups.

In the second half of the 2021 autumn semester, when asked, our level 3, 4 and 5 students reported knowing very few of their peers. When asked about their support network, not a single level 3 or 4 student reported having formed a peer support group. There seemed to be a level of apprehension, mistrust and anxiety among students that had not been seen before. Left unchecked, the consequence of this would be that students would not reap the benefits of peer support.

But teachers can create opportunities for students to meet and form connections – whether face-to-face on campus or online.

Strategies to support students in building a peer support network

Small group learning tasks.

Small group tasks where students work together to achieve a shared objective introduce students to their peers and peer-working. Early in the academic year, assign a discussion task or topic to encourage students to chat to their peers; a specific task or assessment gives an initial discussion topic from which other conversations can follow. Examples of how we have used this approach include: i) a group assessment task to produce a transcript for a natural history film clip ii) a seminar held the week after an essay topic is assigned to allow students to discuss their ideas for an essay plan in small groups.

Fun group activities

Fun group activities provide students with peer-to-peer interactions in a less formal environment than lectures or seminars. Such activities can combine learning with a social activity. We organised a student-led trail around our campus. Students participated in groups of their course peers (about six students per group), with on-the-spot tasks along the route. Put on the spot to solve a problem, students worked as a team and started to develop relationships among themselves and with staff, whom they had not had the opportunity to meet until this event. Similar events can work in the lab or during welcome week to add opportunities for students to build these important peer-support relationships.

Social media groups

Students can seem well connected online given the widespread media reports of young people being addicted to their smartphones and computers. However, when we asked students about their support network, because students had not formed a peer support group in person, they also had not developed any online connections with peers. We asked them which social media platform they preferred for communication – WhatsApp – and if they would like to be part of a cohort group chat on this platform. The students felt uncomfortable setting this up themselves, with some being anxious about giving their number to people they didn’t know well. In their next lab session, where in-person attendance is highest, we left a sign-up sheet for the WhatsApp group at the front of the lab. Students wrote their phone number without leaving their names to preserve some confidentiality. One student volunteered to create the group chat.

The WhatsApp group made an almost instant difference to the mood in our teaching sessions: the students have in-jokes and have openly talked about the group being useful for both their studies, with timetable information, assessment deadlines and IT issues all shared, and their personal lives through things such as car-sharing and arranging accommodation.

Connect with student societies

When students arrive at university, they are often bombarded with information about the city, the university, their course and the many societies they could join. Understandably, the less “new and exciting” but often more supportive societies can often be overlooked. To remedy this, we offered societies a coffee morning halfway through the first semester. This informal two-hour session offered an opportunity for students to drop in and meet other students who were representing key societies linked to the school of study. The goal was to remind students who might be starting to feel isolated that there are peer-support groups available to them. We made badges for the different societies to ensure that the reps were identifiable and to foster a sense of belonging in the new society members.

A key part of our job is to help prepare students for life after university.

Being part of a supportive community and building meaningful relationships with peers are invaluable parts of a student’s resilience toolkit. These can improve student well-being, both at university and beyond.

How to run a successful WhatsApp group

Person holding a phone with WhatsApp

Early last year our world become suddenly even more reliant on the digital connectivity we’ve taken for granted over the last few decades.

The  COVID-19  pandemic meant we were all looking for ways to maintain our connections  while staying socially distanced.

The instant messenger app  WhatsApp  saw a huge increase in daily users right from the beginning of the pandemic.

One report  stated they had seen a massive 40% increase in traffic as early as March 2020, just as the lockdown was starting.

It’s easy to see why, with the ability to text or phone anyone completely for free if you have an internet connection.

But perhaps one of the biggest selling points was the ability to create groups.

Putting your family, friends and fellow students into dedicated chats makes it easier for you all to stay connected in a way that wasn’t possible just a few years ago.

So, what makes a great WhatsApp group? And how can you use the app to benefit your student experience both academically and socially?

Keep to the  rules

Number one, when you’re running any social chat, is to make sure everyone knows and follows the rules.

There’s little more annoying than creating a study group for your  BA (Hons) Events and Entertainment Management  course then finding it turn into a place to share the latest memes.

Make sure you remind the people in the chat of the rules regularly (but be nice about it!)

You could even go so far as to post the names and contacts of the people running the group if it’s very large.

Know your  emojis

Something you might find useful from time to time is posting important information like reminders of assignment deadlines or whether your group will be attending on-site lectures that week.

When you need what you’re writing to stand out from the rest of the chat, try adding an emoji like the  warning  light  or  pointing finger  to draw attention to you .

It will help people spot the information they need to know, even if they’re just skimming through.

Schedule

Another way of organising your WhatsApp group is to put down specific times when the chat will be active.

You could, for example, set an hour aside after each lecture to discuss what was spoken about.

T his  doesn’t mean people can’t use the group outside of that hour. But it gives everyone a time of their day they know to post their questions and look for answers.

Keep it  light

WhatsApp does not, by any means, have to be used only as a serious tool for studying.

It’s important to remember  that  the chats  which  are over organised, with tough moderators tend to not be places people want to go.

Make sure you’re showing off the best of the University of Sunderland in London community.

Share jokes, be supportive and you’ll find you’re getting loads out of it.

We’d love to hear about your study WhatsApp groups. Share your experiences with us on  Facebook ,  Twitter  and  Instagram  using #WeAreSunLon .

This study investigated how lecturers and university students used WhatsApp as an academic tool. The study employed an ANT methodological and analytical framework to investigate WhatsApp as an academic tool in a university set-up in post COVID-19 era. Participants were selected from one state university. The snowball purposive sampling approach was used to select twenty students and five lecturers who provided some deep insight into how WhatsApp was used in academic activities. Data was collected using semi-structured interviews, following actors on the WhatsApp platform and document analysis. Findings revealed that WhatsApp was used in various ways to build students’ networks of learning. The study concluded that lecturers could leverage the WhatsApp platform to enhance students’ academic engagement by expanding the networks of learning to enable students to acquire and share knowledge. Therefore, the study recommends the wider use of WhatsApp to enhance academic performance among students by focusing on a community of learning.

5 tips on writing better university assignments

University life comes with its share of challenges. One of these is writing longer assignments that require higher information, communication and critical thinking skills than what you might have been used to in high school. Here are five tips to help you get ahead.

1. Use all available sources of information

Beyond instructions and deadlines, lecturers make available an increasing number of resources. But students often overlook these.

For example, to understand how your assignment will be graded, you can examine the rubric . This is a chart indicating what you need to do to obtain a high distinction, a credit or a pass, as well as the course objectives – also known as “learning outcomes”.

Other resources include lecture recordings, reading lists, sample assignments and discussion boards. All this information is usually put together in an online platform called a learning management system (LMS). Examples include Blackboard , Moodle , Canvas and iLearn . Research shows students who use their LMS more frequently tend to obtain higher final grades.

If after scrolling through your LMS you still have questions about your assignment, you can check your lecturer’s consultation hours.

2. Take referencing seriously

Plagiarism – using somebody else’s words or ideas without attribution – is a serious offence at university. It is a form of cheating.

Hands on a keyboard using the Ctrl C copy function

In many cases, though, students are unaware they have cheated. They are simply not familiar with referencing styles – such as APA , Harvard , Vancouver , Chicago , etc – or lack the skills to put the information from their sources into their own words.

To avoid making this mistake, you may approach your university’s library, which is likely to offer face-to-face workshops or online resources on referencing. Academic support units may also help with paraphrasing.

You can also use referencing management software, such as EndNote or Mendeley . You can then store your sources, retrieve citations and create reference lists with only a few clicks. For undergraduate students, Zotero has been recommended as it seems to be more user-friendly.

Using this kind of software will certainly save you time searching for and formatting references. However, you still need to become familiar with the citation style in your discipline and revise the formatting accordingly.

3. Plan before you write

If you were to build a house, you wouldn’t start by laying bricks at random. You’d start with a blueprint. Likewise, writing an academic paper requires careful planning: you need to decide the number of sections, their organisation, and the information and sources you will include in each.

Research shows students who prepare detailed outlines produce higher-quality texts. Planning will not only help you get better grades, but will also reduce the time you spend staring blankly at the screen thinking about what to write next.

Young woman sitting at desk with laptop and checking notes for assignment

During the planning stage, using programs like OneNote from Microsoft Office or Outline for Mac can make the task easier as they allow you to organise information in tabs. These bits of information can be easily rearranged for later drafting. Navigating through the tabs is also easier than scrolling through a long Word file.

4. Choose the right words

Which of these sentences is more appropriate for an assignment?

a. “This paper talks about why the planet is getting hotter”, or b. “This paper examines the causes of climate change”.

The written language used at university is more formal and technical than the language you normally use in social media or while chatting with your friends. Academic words tend to be longer and their meaning is also more precise. “Climate change” implies more than just the planet “getting hotter”.

To find the right words, you can use SkELL , which shows you the words that appear more frequently, with your search entry categorised grammatically. For example, if you enter “paper”, it will tell you it is often the subject of verbs such as “present”, “describe”, “examine” and “discuss”.

Another option is the Writefull app, which does a similar job without having to use an online browser.

5. Edit and proofread

If you’re typing the last paragraph of the assignment ten minutes before the deadline, you will be missing a very important step in the writing process: editing and proofreading your text. A 2018 study found a group of university students did significantly better in a test after incorporating the process of planning, drafting and editing in their writing.

Hand holding red pen to edit paper.

You probably already know to check the spelling of a word if it appears underlined in red. You may even use a grammar checker such as Grammarly . However, no software to date can detect every error and it is not uncommon to be given inaccurate suggestions.

So, in addition to your choice of proofreader, you need to improve and expand your grammar knowledge. Check with the academic support services at your university if they offer any relevant courses.

Written communication is a skill that requires effort and dedication. That’s why universities are investing in support services – face-to-face workshops, individual consultations, and online courses – to help students in this process. You can also take advantage of a wide range of web-based resources such as spell checkers, vocabulary tools and referencing software – many of them free.

Improving your written communication will help you succeed at university and beyond.

Title : Active carbons as nanoporous materials for solving of environmental problems

However, up to now, the main carriers of catalytic additives have been mineral sorbents: silica gels, alumogels. This is obviously due to the fact that they consist of pure homogeneous components SiO2 and Al2O3, respectively. It is generally known that impurities, especially the ash elements, are catalytic poisons that reduce the effectiveness of the catalyst. Therefore, carbon sorbents with 5-15% by weight of ash elements in their composition are not used in the above mentioned technologies. However, in such an important field as a gas-mask technique, carbon sorbents (active carbons) are carriers of catalytic additives, providing effective protection of a person against any types of potent poisonous substances (PPS). In ESPE “JSC "Neorganika" there has been developed the technology of unique ashless spherical carbon carrier-catalysts by the method of liquid forming of furfural copolymers with subsequent gas-vapor activation, brand PAC. Active carbons PAC have 100% qualitative characteristics of the three main properties of carbon sorbents: strength - 100%, the proportion of sorbing pores in the pore space – 100%, purity - 100% (ash content is close to zero). A particularly outstanding feature of active PAC carbons is their uniquely high mechanical compressive strength of 740 ± 40 MPa, which is 3-7 times larger than that of  such materials as granite, quartzite, electric coal, and is comparable to the value for cast iron - 400-1000 MPa. This allows the PAC to operate under severe conditions in moving and fluidized beds.  Obviously, it is time to actively develop catalysts based on PAC sorbents for oil refining, petrochemicals, gas processing and various technologies of organic synthesis.

Victor M. Mukhin was born in 1946 in the town of Orsk, Russia. In 1970 he graduated the Technological Institute in Leningrad. Victor M. Mukhin was directed to work to the scientific-industrial organization "Neorganika" (Elektrostal, Moscow region) where he is working during 47 years, at present as the head of the laboratory of carbon sorbents.     Victor M. Mukhin defended a Ph. D. thesis and a doctoral thesis at the Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia (in 1979 and 1997 accordingly). Professor of Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia. Scientific interests: production, investigation and application of active carbons, technological and ecological carbon-adsorptive processes, environmental protection, production of ecologically clean food.
