What is Range Rover’s Autobiography trim?

October 14, 2015 by carwow staff

' class=

The Range Rover has been one of the ultimate expressions of luxury motoring ever since the first model was released back in 1970. Now in its fourth generation, it competes with the finest executive saloons, offering a comfy ride, and smooth, refined power from a selection of V6 and V8 petrol and diesel engines.

Both the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport are available in several different trim levels, one of which is Autobiography. So what does it offer, and where does it fit into each respective range?

Put either the Range Rover or the Range Rover Sport in our car configurator to see how much carwow could help you save.

There are three distinct trim levels for the Range Rover – Vogue, Vogue SE and Autobiography. The Sport is available in HSE, Autobiography or ultra-sporty SVR variants. The Vogue is overflowing with advanced in-car tech, fine materials and a huge selection of exterior colours and alloy wheel designs.

The Autobiography, however, adds numerous standard features which are optional further down the range. Those looking for a more accommodating rear seat experience can opt for the Autobiography Long Wheelbase (LWB) for an additional £7,400. For an extra £9,050 on top of the cost of the Vogue SE, the Autobiography gains:

Semi-aniline leather upholstery –  while many car interiors feature leather coated with a pigment to colour its surface, aniline leather uses soluble dyes that soak into the hide. This lends the surface a softer, more natural finish, and reveals the natural grain of the leather more prominently.

Winged headrests –  These soft, pillow-like headrests are electrically adjustable, and can wrap around the back of your head for the ultimate in squishy splendour.

Four zone climate control –  allows each passenger to individually adjust the temperature settings. In lesser models a three-zone system is fitted, forcing the rear seat passengers to agree on one temperature.

Illuminated tread plates –  upon opening the doors, occupants are treated to aluminium-trimmed door sills, with glowing “Autobiography” script.

Surround camera system –  a series of cameras allow the central screen to display a bird’s-eye view of the car to the driver – ideal for parking or navigating through tight spaces.

On-board WiFi –  allowing users to surf the web while on the move.

Remote pack heat with timed climate –  the car can be pre-heated or chilled, based on a timer system. It can be set to perform the process weekly, or as a single event up to 16 days in advance.

Rear seat entertainment –  Includes two 10.2-inch screens mounted to the back of the front seats, two pairs of headphones, a remote control and additional 12V and USB ports. This is fitted as standard to the LWB, and is optional for the regular Autobiography.

Still not plush enough?

Beyond the standard Autobiography is the SVAutobiography. Often defined by its two-tone paint finish, it adds further luxurious features and customisation options, and is positioned to take on ultra-high end SUVs like the Bentley Bentayga . It’s priced from approximately £150,000.

Range Rover HSE vs Autobiography: which model is better?

Two of the most popular trims are the Range Rover HSE and Autobiography, so let’s take a closer look at the differences.

The Range Rover HSE is a step up from the base model with a 3.0-liter V6 engine with many features making the upgrade worthwhile. The Range Rover Autobiography is the top of the line model with a 5.0-liter V8 engine with every feature imagined included.

However, all these bells and whistles come at a steep price, so it’s important to consider whether the extra features are worth the additional cost.

Let’s take a look further at the comparison of the Range Rover HSE vs Autobiography.

Range Rover HSE vs Autobiography: what’s the difference?

If you’re in the market for a luxury SUV, you might be considering the Range Rover HSE or Autobiography.

Here are key points we’ll cover:

  • The Autobiography is the more expensive option, but it offers more premium features and a more powerful engine.
  • The HSE is more affordable but still offers a comfortable and luxurious ride.
  • Both models have similar fuel efficiency ratings, but the Autobiography has a slightly larger fuel tank.
  • The Autobiography offers more advanced safety features, such as adaptive cruise control and lane departure warning.
  • The HSE is a great option for those who want a luxury SUV without breaking the bank, while the Autobiography is perfect for those who want the ultimate luxury experience.

Both models offer impressive features and capabilities but have some key differences that may influence your decision.

Performance

When it comes to performance, the HSE and Autobiography both offer powerful engines and smooth handling.

However, the Autobiography comes with a supercharged V8 engine that delivers even more horsepower and torque than the HSE.

The Autobiography may be the better choice if you’re looking for the ultimate driving experience.

One of the biggest differences between the HSE and Autobiography is the interior.

While both models offer luxurious amenities like leather seats and wood trim, the Autobiography takes things to the next level with additional features like:

  • Executive Class Rear Seats
  • Refrigerated Compartment
  • Meridian Signature Sound System

The Autobiography is the clear winner if you’re looking for the ultimate in comfort and convenience.

Of course, all of these features come at a price.

The Autobiography is significantly more expensive than the HSE, with a starting price that’s about $40,000 higher.

The HSE might be the better choice if you’re on a budget.

Exterior design

When it comes to the exterior design of the Range Rover HSE and Autobiography, there are some notable differences.

Both models have a sleek and modern appearance, but the Autobiography stands out with its unique front and rear bumpers and it’s premium diamond-turned wheels.

One of the most significant differences between the HSE and Autobiography is the range of colors available.

While the HSE comes in a variety of colors, the Autobiography offers a more extensive range of exclusive colors, including Balmoral Blue and Flux Silver.

The Autobiography also offers a two-tone color scheme, which allows you to choose a contrasting roof color for a more personalized look.

In addition to the standard colors, both models offer a range of optional extras, including black exterior packages and gloss black wheels.

The Autobiography also offers a unique exterior styling package that includes a black contrast roof, black exterior accents, and 22-inch wheels.

Overall, the Range Rover Autobiography offers a more exclusive and personalized exterior design, with a wider range of colors and unique styling features.

However, the Range Rover HSE still offers a sleek and modern appearance, with a range of optional extras to help you customize your vehicle to your liking.

Interior design

When it comes to the interior design of the Range Rover HSE and Autobiography, you can expect nothing but luxury and elegance.

From the finest materials to the latest technology, every detail has been carefully crafted to provide you with the ultimate driving experience.

Both the HSE and Autobiography offer a variety of color options to choose from.

The HSE comes with standard colors such as Ebony, Almond, and Espresso, while the Autobiography offers a wider range of colors including Ivory, Cirrus, Eclipse, ECLP, Espres, PIM, VIN Tan, and Pimento.

The choice of colors available for both models allows you to personalize your vehicle to your taste.

The Range Rover Autobiography takes the interior design to the next level by offering a choice of two premium trim options.

The first option is the Perforated Diamond-Cut Semi-Aniline Lthr Seat Trim, which comes with a unique diamond pattern and is available in a range of colors.

The second option is the Perforated Windsor Leather Seat Trim, which is available in Alm, Eclip, Ebny, Pimento, and Cir colors.

The HSE comes with the standard Windsor Leather Seat Trim.

The HSE and Autobiography have the latest technology features to enhance your driving experience.

The infotainment system includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, allowing you to connect your smartphone and access your favorite apps.

The Meridian Sound System is also available as an option, providing a premium audio experience.

In conclusion, the interior design of the Range Rover HSE and Autobiography is a testament to the attention to detail and craftsmanship that goes into every vehicle.

Whether you choose the HSE or Autobiography, you can be sure that you will be driving in luxury and comfort.

Regarding performance, the Range Rover HSE and Autobiography are equipped with powerful petrol or diesel engines that deliver impressive performance on the road.

Let’s take a closer look at the engine performance of these two models.

Both the HSE and Autobiography come with a 3.0-liter V6 supercharged engine that delivers 355 horsepower and 365 lb-ft of torque.

This engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission that provides smooth and responsive shifting.

The Range Rover Autobiography offers an optional 5.0-liter V8 supercharged engine that delivers an impressive 518 horsepower and 461 lb-ft of torque.

This engine is also paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

In terms of acceleration, the HSE can go from 0 to 60 mph in just 6.9 seconds, while the Autobiography can do it in just 5.1 seconds with the V8 engine.

The HSE has a top speed of 130 mph, while the Autobiography with the V8 engine can reach a top speed of 155 mph.

The HSE and Autobiography offer impressive handling and agility on the road, thanks to their advanced suspension systems and all-wheel drive capabilities.

The Autobiography, however, features an adaptive dynamics system that helps to further enhance its performance and handling.

Terrain response

When it comes to off-roading, Terrain Response is one of the most important features of any Range Rover.

It is a system that adjusts the vehicle’s settings to suit different types of terrain, such as mud, sand, or snow.

The HSE and Autobiography trims both come with Terrain Response as standard, but there are some differences in the details.

On the HSE, Terrain Response is a single-speed system that adjusts the vehicle’s settings for five different types of terrain: General Driving, Grass/Gravel/Snow, Mud/Ruts, Sand, and Rock Crawl.

The system uses sensors to detect the type of terrain you are driving on and adjusts the vehicle’s settings accordingly.

For example, in Sand mode, the system will adjust the throttle response, transmission, and traction control to help you maintain traction in loose sand.

On the Autobiography, Terrain Response is a two-speed system that adds an additional mode for more extreme off-roading.

In addition to the five modes on the HSE, the Autobiography also has a Low Range mode for crawling over rocks or steep inclines.

Low Range mode reduces the vehicle’s speed and increases its torque, making it easier to navigate difficult terrain.

Overall, both the HSE and Autobiography trims offer excellent off-road capabilities thanks to Terrain Response.

The Autobiography’s additional Low Range mode may give it a slight advantage in extreme off-roading situations, but for most drivers, the HSE’s single-speed system should be more than sufficient.

Brake calipers

When it comes to the brake calipers on the Range Rover HSE and Autobiography, there are some notable differences.

The HSE comes with Evoque size brake calipers, while the Autobiography comes with Brembo calipers.

Brembo is a well-known brand in the automotive industry and is often associated with high-performance vehicles.

The Brembo calipers are larger and more powerful than the Evoque size calipers found on the HSE.

This means that the Autobiography will have better braking performance than the HSE.

However, it’s important to note that the HSE is still equipped with quality brake calipers.

The Evoque size calipers are still more than capable of providing reliable and effective braking.

In addition to the differences in performance, there are also differences in appearance.

The Brembo calipers on the Autobiography have a distinctive red color, which can add a sporty and aggressive look to the vehicle.

The Evoque size calipers on the HSE are not as eye-catching, but still have a sleek and stylish appearance.

Overall, while the Autobiography’s Brembo calipers do offer better braking performance, the Evoque size calipers on the HSE are still a quality option.

The decision between the two ultimately comes down to personal preference and driving needs.

Here is a quick comparison of the brake calipers on the Range Rover HSE and Autobiography:

Parking assist

When it comes to parking, the Range Rover HSE and Autobiography models come with a range of advanced features to make the task easier and more efficient.

One of these features is Parking Assist, which can help you park your vehicle with greater precision and ease.

With Parking Assist, you can rely on your Range Rover to find an appropriate-sized parking spot and park itself fully.

The system relies on several sensors placed around the vehicle to detect the space and ensure that the SUV won’t get too close to other cars or obstacles.

Once you have switched on the Parking Assist feature, it uses sensors around your Range Rover to measure up potential parking spaces as you drive past.

Once it has detected a space that is 20% or more greater than your vehicle, it asks you to stop, let go of the steering wheel, and select reverse gear via the touchscreen.

The system will then take over and steer the vehicle into the parking space.

Parking Assist can be especially useful when parking in tight spaces or parallel parking, where it can be challenging to judge the distance between your vehicle and other cars or obstacles.

With Parking Assist, you can park your Range Rover with greater accuracy and confidence.

It is worth noting that Parking Assist is not a substitute for safe driving practices.

It is still important to remain alert and aware of your surroundings while parking your vehicle.

Parking Assist is simply a tool to help make the task of parking easier and more efficient.

10 Awesome Facts About The Range Rover SV Autobiography

The Range Rover SV Autobiography will literally take you anywhere you want to go, and it'll do so in style.

Range Rovers have forever been known for their luxury . They are often the first choice for anyone who cares about nothing more than a smooth ride and great tech. The SV Autobiography editions of the Range Rover lineup provide this and then some, with only the highest quality materials, and the most up-to-date tech for a truly premium experience.

Advanced entertainment, comfort, and convenience features are provided on these models, with added exclusivity in the form of some styling options and added flourishes. Below are some awesome facts about the Range Rover SV Autobiography and some of its greatest features.

10 Driver Assistance

Range Rovers have always been one of the top choices in the luxury SUV category, and part of its popularity is due to the technology and driver assistance features . The Range Rover SV Autobiography is no different, due to it being the top of the line model.

There are a range of driver assistance features available on the SV Autobiography, including the Drive Pack with Blind Spot Monitor, Driver Condition Monitor, Adaptive Speed Limiter and Traffic Sign Recognition. The Pro Pack offers even more with Lane Keep Assist, Blind Spot Assist and Adaptive Cruise Control and High-Speed Emergency Braking. The Park Pack also features a 360-degree Rear Traffic Monitor and Parking Aid, as well as Clear Exit Monitor alerts.

9 Exterior Features

The exterior features on the Autobiography are nothing short of exquisite. The Autobiography is the best in class, and with that comes some extra tweaks and flourishes, just to let others know you only shop for the best.

For an especially distinct look, nine exclusive color options are available on this model, as well as some exclusive badges. The hood and tailgate even have their own black detailing with a copper finish to further elevate this cars premium status.

8 Luxury Interior

The interior is perhaps where the Range Rover Autobiography editions shines the most. After all, luxury cars are about feeling and class , and nothing says cheap like poor quality materials and bad build quality. Luckily, this is far from what the Range Rover's interior is like.

The interior is awash with vintage leather, available in multiple colors, including tan. Carbon fiber flourishes are also dotted throughout the cabin and even some copper weave too. The Autobiography Ultimate Edition even has some special badging in the form of a Bespoke Commissioning Plaque on center console.

7 Included Tech And Infotainment

Both driver and passenger will be excited to know that the Autobiography includes a wide range of technology, ranging from driver convenience all the way to comfort and entertainment.

The front seats can be both heated and cooled, as well as providing a so called “hot-stone” massage function. If you opt for the long wheelbase variant, you get your own rear console, tables, and, astonishingly, even your own fridge, which is perhaps the most luxurious thing anyone could ever ask for.

6 Engine Options

Now, we could sit and talk about the Autobiography's luxurious aspects all day, however, it is still a car and that, of course, means there's an engine under the hood. In this instance, the Autobiography was given the best of the best.

In total, there are a whole six engine options available, which is fairly staggering, and these include more modest 300 - 350 hp diesel engines both at 3.0-liters, 400 hp gasoline engines in either a 2.0-liter or 3.0-liter configuration, and finally, two 5.0-liter supercharged V8 engines with either 525 or a monumental 565 hp.

5 Autobiography History

Many may not be aware that the Range Rover Autobiography isn't just a one off, and has actually been around for a number of years now, 26 in fact. The Autobiography was first announced at the London motor show in 1993 and cars went on sale the following year.

The mission statement of the Autobiography is to provide unparalleled Land Rover design and exceptional luxury with the best models available from the legendary manufacturer. The models have also often been massively customizable in the past, providing for a truly bespoke vehicle providing you have the cash.

4 The Performance

The entry-level 3.0-liter diesel engine will provide decent performance if you aren't willing to opt for the V8, providing a ride that's both smooth and comfortable. However, it should be said that no matter which engine you choose, they are all going to be great, especially the hybrid options which are slightly more expensive.

The V8 on the other hand will provide the best performance with great speed and acceleration, especially for a vehicle of this size and weight. There is more than enough power, meaning that if you want to drive the Autobiography fast, you absolutely can.

3 Driving Modes

Further adding to the versatility of the Range Rover are the available driving modes . These are each tailored to a specific driving experience or to provide some added functionality.

The Speed Lowering mode uses the electronic air suspension to reduce drag and therefore fuel consumption by lowering the vehicle by just over half an inch from normal ride height when the car is travelling above 65mph. Comfort mode unsurprisingly provides added comfort by calibrating the suspension settings. Dynamic mode has a firmer suspension setting for a more dynamic driving style. And finally, the EV mode allows your car to be run on electric power only if you so wish.

2 Off-Road Ability

The Autobiography is a luxury SUV meant to be driven at cruising speeds to provide the passengers with ultimate comfort and luxury. However, if you so wish, the car can easily perform when the going gets tough. There are even included off-road features such as Hill Descent Control, Twin-Speed Transfer Box and Low Traction Launch.

The car's secondary function is that of a tough off-roader which may seem exactly the opposite of what the car is all about, but don't forget, this comes from the makers of the extremely capable off-roaders from Land Rover, and surprisingly, the Autobiography still shares some of the DNA from those vehicles. The versatility of this vehicle leaves competitors quite literally in the dust.

1 Efficiency

Of course, the efficiency of the Autobiography's huge V8 is less than satisfactory, to put it kindly. However, if you choose to opt for one of the hybrid variants, you may be pleasantly surprised at the level of fuel efficiency that can be achieved from the Range Rover.

The 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine is perhaps the best option for those who are looking for some added fuel efficiency whilst also providing more than adequate performance too.

Range Rover Autobiography Ingenium – Review

Range Rover Autobiography Ingenium car review

By Liam Bird

Usually when someone in PR hands you the keys to their brand new car it goes without saying (and more than likely with an accompanying wodge of paperwork you have to sign first, insisting…) that you’re going to be careful. Kerbing an alloy wheel on a Porsche or a Ferrari is unlikely to win you any friends back at the press office.

Land Rover however, are different. While there’s still a mutual understanding that you’re not going to bend, break, or unnecessarily scratch anything during your custodianship of one of their vehicles, the Solihull-based manufacturer of all-things 4×4 positively encourage you to explore the limits of what it is they’ve lent you. Which is why only hours after having first set eyes on it, I found myself deep within the forests of Eastnor Castle, with over £120,000 worth of all-new Range Rover axle-deep in mud and pine branches brushing its lustrous Charente Grey paintwork.

Range Rover Autobiography Ingenium car review front

“Much improved”

The grounds of Eastnor Castle have been used by Land Rover to test and develop their vehicles since the early sixties, so perhaps it was inevitable that when introducing the fifth generation of the world’s most recognisable luxury off-roader to the great and the good, (and me too), we’d end-up deep in the Herefordshire woods. Quite what the roots of those pines were capable of doing to Range Rover’s bin-lid sized diamond turned alloy wheels (22 inch are standard; 23 inch are optional) as we threaded our way over and around them I tried not to think about.

The fact of the matter is a Range Rover simply wouldn’t be a Range Rover without near-legendary off-road capabilities. Air suspension can be raised to give over 400mm ground clearance; the Terrain Response 2 system allows myriad combinations of locking differentials, driving modes, low ratio gears and of course, four-wheel drive; the parking cameras can be set to off-road mode. It even comes with the capability to wade through three feet of water. All handy stuff, y’know, for when the Waitrose Cheltenham car park next floods.

Whether most buyers will ever choose to stray far from anywhere more rugged than their manicured gravel driveways is of course their prerogative. Nevertheless, the good news for those less adventurously inclined is the new Range Rover’s on-road manners are also much improved.

Range Rover Autobiography Ingenium car review side

“Steering is sharper”

Where once you could feel every kilo a Range Rover carried, and the old car would pitch and roll like a tug on a heavy tide every time you attempted to alter its course, the L460 – to give this new model its correct nomenclature – feels altogether more composed. A slow-in, swifter-out approach to cornering is still rewarded – this is an SUV, not a sports car – however proceedings are now significantly more waft than wallow.

Anti-roll control, torque vectoring, and intelligent all-wheel drive, all work in harmony with a new five-link rear suspension set-up, and… rear-wheel steering; the turning circle is now smaller than that of an Evoque. The body is stiffer, as is the new MLA-flex aluminium chassis. The steering is sharper. Everything feels more alert, more responsive, and, well, altogether more connected. It’s quieter too, much quieter. Our press car was a straight-six diesel – hybrids will arrive soon, an all-electric in 2024 – on moderate throttle you could barely a hear it. There’s wind noise, even on this the sleekest, most aerodynamic Rangie to date, with its flush-fitting glazing and hidden guttering, but it’s nothing too intrusive.

Range Rover Autobiography Ingenium car review interior

“Takes a little bit of acclimatisation”

And yet, from the driver’s seat, everything still feels oh-so very familiar. The trademark Command driving position means you’re sat higher than you would in a Transit van; visibility over the clamshell bonnet is excellent. The column stalks are the usual chunky affairs, the doors feel bank vault thick, and everything else – seat and mirror adjusters etc – seem to be exactly where you’d expect to find them.

Ahead of you lies a new digital driver display – as standard on all versions – to the left of it, a dashboard mounted 13.1inch touchscreen infotainment system which incorporates, sat-nav, DAB, various camera functions and displays, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto so you can run your phone apps and Amazon Alexa. It takes a little bit of acclimatisation to get used to all the new tech, even the heater controls have gone electric, but it all seems to work nicely (not something you used to be able say about Land Rover electrics!) and it’s all crystal clear. One other thing: If you like leather, this interior smells gorgeous.

Vegan alternatives, I hasten to add, are also available. Clearly Range Rover interiors have come a long way from brushed velour, and hose-down rubber mats.

Range Rover Autobiography Ingenium car review rear

“Breadth of talent”

Believe it or not, it is 51 years since the launch of the first Range Rover, and still, no other car seems to have encapsulated such a breadth of talent in a single package. There are faster SUVs, there are more rugged 4x4s, and there are more luxurious and better riding and handling cars (2.5 tonnes can’t glide all of the time no matter how sophisticated the software). And alas, Land Rover’s reliability hasn’t always what it should be either… But, a Range Rover won’t ever look out of place parked outside the best of restaurants, at the polo, towing a boat, or deep within the woods. And it will get you wherever you need to be whatever the weather, with ease.

It may be all-new; sleeker, quieter, more luxurious, better connected, and better looking? That’s perhaps for you to decide. But half a century on the original ethos of the Range Rover still remains. The faithful need not fear; they haven’t really changed it, they’ve just made it better.

Range Rover Autobiography

"the range rover is at its most expensive in autobiography trim, but there's a bigger choice of engine available.".

autobiography meaning range rover

The Range Rover Autobiography is among the most expensive Range Rovers you can buy, and boasts some luxurious equipment as standard. This means that, along with the equipment that can be found on the Range Rover Vogue SE – like automatic climate control, a Meridian sound system, and front and rear parking cameras – you also get a heated leather and wood steering wheel, larger alloy wheels and a panoramic roof as standard.

The entry-level 3.0-litre TDV6 diesel offers a good balance of fuel economy and performance, and it’s pretty smooth too. Although more expensive, the V6 diesel hybrid is both quicker and cheaper to run than the 3.0-litre TDV6 and offers more performance than most people will ever need. Both the 4.4-litre V8 diesel and 5.0-litre V8 petrol Range Rovers are faster still, but the running costs are undeniably high.

The long-wheelbase version of the Autobiography is only available with the more powerful V8 petrol engine and the hybrid. It is slightly longer than the standard version, and so has improved rear passenger space.

Good points

The Range Rover Autobiography is a luxury car first and an off-roader second. It has a plush interior, boasts impressive levels of equipment, and road noise is almost non-existent. However, the Range Rover is still an excellent car when it comes to the rough stuff, giving it a versatility that class rivals like the Mercedes S-Class saloon simply can’t compete with.Considering the fact that the Range Rover is a large SUV, it is also quite enjoyable to drive too. Even the entry-level 3.0-litre V6 provides more than adequate performance for such a large car.

Although none of its rivals can compete with the Range Rover’s excellent off-road ability, the fact that it is an SUV has its downsides. Compared to more conventional saloons like the Mercedes S-Class or Audi A8 , the car’s height means that access to the back is awkward. While there’s no doubting that the Autobiography has an impressive amount of equipment, it is expensive, costing £10,000 more than the equivalent Vogue SE. It is also more expensive to run than many of its luxurious competitors. Finally, the touchscreen infotainment system is fiddly and overcomplicated, making it difficult to find even the most basic of commands.

Range Rover Autobiography: There’s still nothing quite like it

Now in its fifth generation, the autobiography still does all the things it used to do and a whole lot more, writes sean o'grady . and it comes in a plug-in hybrid version too, article bookmarked.

E veryone knows, or thinks they do, that the Range Rover has always been a superb car both on the road and off-road. That was after all the thinking behind the original iteration launched more than half a century ago – a more civilised Land Rover that could work in the country estate and look smart in town. This rare blend of skills, its status as the first of its kind, plus a fair dose of snob value has ensured its enduring success, under successive management and corporate ownership. Currently, it’s under the stewardship (with Jaguar) of Tata, the giant Indian industrial conglomerate, with commendable, though overdue, plans to completely electrify the range. The greening can’t come quickly enough.

Now, in its fifth generation, the Range Rover still does all of the things it used to do, but these days the car can be best enjoyed in an underground car park with big concrete pillars standing sentinel around extremely tight corners. In the past, such environments became increasingly challenging for the ever-larger versions of the Range Rover that came out (the 1970 original looked like it could fit in the boot when stood next to its great-grandchildren). Indeed, it got so bad that parking became an almost impossible task, seriously eroding the vehicle’s famed multipurpose credentials. You’d be doing five-point turns and hoping not to scrape that expensive bodywork.

  • Nissan Ariya: All-new, all-wonderful, all-electric

Now things are different. The all-new Range Rover not only has four-wheel drive to get you up Kilimanjaro, but it also has four-wheel steering to get you into a tight parking space, or, indeed around a corner in a crowded city steeet or country lane. The back wheels moving in sympathy with the front transforms the urban practicality of this luxury behemoth and endows it with the turning circle of a Mini. The vast array of options and information that lies behind the medium-sized touchscreen in the dash also contains a handy table of vehicle dimensions, and of course, the height is adjustable via the air suspension settings. The usual auto parking options, sensors, and a remarkable camera system that allows you to sort of virtually stand outside the vehicle complete the picture. You have complete confidence that those expensive classic lines aren’t going to get scraped.

What’s reassuringly the same, though, is that distinctive profile, with the “floating” roof look, the now slimmer styling groove running down the flanks, and the split tailgate. This time, though, the Range Rover has a new party trick: a powered rear door which raises to reveal a powered lower tailgate that will rest above the bumper, allowing you to picnic while you watch the polo. That sort of thing. They’ve also abolished the rear lights, in the sense that, out of use, all you see is a pair of slim black vertical styling lines. The styling “gills” behind the front wheels are narrower than in the previous model, but the overall effect of this decluttering is that it makes the car slightly slab-sided, and in white, it looks a bit like a fridge-feeezer on wheels. The front is clearly an evolution from the last few version of the car, wedgy and with a relatively small grille compared to its many rivals.

In short, or “in large” I suppose, the Range Rover has retained its distinctive presence on the road, and it’s fair to say there’s nothing quite like it. The interior and refinement is rivalled by the new, even more lavish, interior of the likes of the Bentley Bentayga, which majors on bespoke craftsmanship, but the Range Rover is an undeniably desirable, aspirational product. Reassuringly costly, too, with (practically speaking) nothing under six figures these days. The high “command” driving position is also still there. This is about much more than simply being perched high up, eye to eye with bus drivers, and more a sense that you’re indeed in control of all you survey as far as the eye can see. Which in the case of some owners will be literally true as well.

I was pleasantly surprised that the diesel engine in my car was as smooth and economical as it was, and with excellent turbo charging and a little extra boost from a mild hybrid electrified set-up, the acceleration is, like everything else about the vehicle, impressive. With its poise and sense of calm repose, it’s no sports car, and I wouldn’t really want to push its two-and-a-half-tonne bulk too far in defiance of Newtonian physics. There’s also a plug-in hybrid version, paired with diesel or V8 petrol power, and, pleasingly, an all-battery electric version on the way as well. You can specify an extra-long wheelbase version (as used by the prime minister) which can come with three rows to seat seven lucky passengers, and various special versions from Land Rover SV.

It’s all about luxury, whether you’re on the move or relaxing, relieved, in an underground car park. There are plenty of able rivals, from Bentleys and Rolls-Royces to Mercedes-Benz and Lamborghinis, some superior, and even more costly. Yet the Range Rover retains its tasteful, handsome allure. Even during a cost of living crisis, never have the landed gentry had such a choice of go-anywhere status symbols. I’ll leave that thought there.

OFF ROAD ROVER - RANGE ROVER FORUM, WIKI, BLOG

Range Rover Autobiography vs Range Rover Supercharged

Range Rover autobiography represents the highest line available in America and a customizable version in Europe.   I’m going to focus on the US Range Rovers here

Engine and Drivetrain

All Range Rover Autobiographies in the US are Supercharged.  Whereas the Autobiography represents an option package only available on the Supercharged models. So both Autobiography and Supercharged Range Rovers run on the same engine and drivetrain.

Exterior Design

Although the original 2009 Range Rover Autobiography had very few differences versus the Supercharged, the later models and Autobiography variants did show some external differences.  The 2011 Range Rover Black Autobiography has a new grille and different side vents

The Range Rover Autobiography Ultimate also has running boards and quadrangle exhaust (at some point I think this was integrated to all Autobiographies maybe 2011?).  Range Rover Sport Autobiographies have more external differences with new front bumpers but seem to have less interior alterations.  Range Rover Sport Autobiography has less approach and departure angle than a normal sport.    Autobiographies also have unique premium diamond turned wheels.

Interior Design

The Range Rover Supercharged adds leather to various areas that the HSE doesn’t feature it, such as the upper dash (although this became standard on all models in 2009).  The Autobiography features 4 zone climate control (post 2010 ones have cooled, reclining rear seats) with 4 heated seats while this was an option for the Supercharged Range Rovers in 2008.

The Autobiographies have semi-aniline leather, 2 additional pieces of wood in the rear, more leather along the center console.  Compared to the Supercharged the Autobiographies have leather on the doors, the center dash, and lower dash and other various area such as some kick panels.  The RR Autobiography Black has “Range Rover Autobiography Black” inscribed on wood panels and other areas.

The Range Rover autobiography ultimate also has a 2+2 captains seats configuration with a champagne cooler in the rear center console. Range Rover Black Autobiographies have veneer that works in the namesake and feature two tone seating if I recall.  After 2010 Autobiographies have leather headliner which is a fairly big improvement along with fold down vanity mirrors in the rear and heated cooled reclining rear seats.

In one sentence the Autobiography has much more leather of upgraded variation (which seem to wear better than the normal leather).

The Land Rover Buying Guide: Every Model, Explained

Rugged and synonymous with prestige, Land Rovers fit in on the trails and on Rodeo Drive.

land rover defender 2022

By Tyler Duffy

Welcome to Brand Breakdown , a series of comprehensive yet easy-to-digest guides to your favorite companies, with insights and information you won’t find on the average About page.

A History of Land Rover

Land Rover is a British automaker that produces luxury four-wheel-drive vehicles. The brand technically began in 1948 when the Rover Company launched the Land Rover Series of off-road vehicles. British Leyland took the brand upmarket with the Range Rover in 1970 and branched off Land Rover into a distinct brand from now-defunct Rover in 1978. Land Rover was later owned by BMW and Ford. Current owner Tata Motors bought Land Rover from Ford in 2008, merging it with Jaguar to form Jaguar Land Rover .

discovery driving on road through the trees

Land Rover has gone full-on luxury these days, but the brand maintains its reputation for off-road capability. Land Rover does not give its vehicles “Trail Rated” badges like Jeep ; it’s presumed — since they carry the name Land Rover — that they are able to do that (yes, even the Evoque). The flipside is Land Rover’s not especially stellar reputation for reliability.

In 2021, Jaguar Land Rover embarked on a new product strategy called “Reimagine .” The Land Rover lineup will shift dramatically toward electrification. Land Rover plans to launch its first EV in 2024 and six within the next five years. By 2030, Land Rover expects every model to have an EV option and EVs to make up 60 percent of Land Rover sales.

Wait, Isn’t Land Rover a “House of Brands” Now?

Sort of. Jaguar Land Rover recently rebranded itself as “JLR,” and as part of that change, the company announced a new “House of Brands” strategy that will see it become four brands (Range Rover, Defender, Discovery, Jaguar) instead of the traditional pairing of Jaguar and Land Rover.

What does this mean for Land Rover? Not a lot, really.

Buyers won’t notice anything different. Range Rover, Defender and Discovery vehicles will still carry Land Rover badging, and you will still visit a Land Rover dealer to buy them. Effectively, what this does is diminish Jaguar — set to become a more low-volume, high-end EV brand — within the portfolio in favor of the more popular Land Rover wing.

Land Rover Terms You Should Know

HSE: Stands for “High Specification Equipment.” This is a higher-than-standard trim level offered on most Land Rover models. SVO and SVR: SVO stands for “Special Vehicles Operations,” the brand’s high-performance wing. The highest-performance vehicles under the SVO wing replace the O with an R, which stands for “racing.” SVO and SVR trims aren’t available across the board, but vehicles that sport the trim level are, in scientific terms, “fun as hell.” Autobiography : This is a Range Rover trim offered on the Range Rover, the Range Rover Sport and the Evoque. This trim is fancy. It will have luxury finishes, an array of standard features and come at a significantly higher price point. Dynamic: This is a term affixed to Range Rover trims. These cars are more aggressive and dynamic than non-dynamic trims. That can mean styling. It can also mean a more powerful engine. Range Rover: Land Rover has equity in “Range Rover” as a luxury brand. Thus, four of the seven vehicles are “Range Rovers.” These cars tend to be referred to as just “Range Rovers” because “Land Rover Range Rover X” is a mouthful. Sport : Smaller version. The Range Rover Sport is smaller than the Range Rover. The Discovery Sport is smaller than the Discovery.

Land Rover Defender

land rover defender 2022

The Land Rover Defender is Land Rover’s original overland vehicle, the British equivalent of the Jeep Wrangler . Before 1983, it was just known as the “Land Rover.” Land Rover produced a brief run of “NAS” Defenders sold in North America from 1993 to 1997. JLR discontinued the body-on-frame Defender’s continuous production run in 2016. Land Rover revived the Defender nameplate in 2020 with a new unibody SUV. It won the World Car Design of the Year award for 2021 .

The Defender now comes in three body styles: a two-door Defender 90, a four-door Defender 110 and a three-row Defender 130 . The numerical designations no longer track precisely with the Defender wheelbase. It comes with inline-four, inline-six or now a supercharged V8 powertrain .

This Plug-In Hybrid SUV Offers More Than 50 Miles Of All-Electric Range

If you want an efficient PHEV SUV that offers the best all-electric range, you'll have to shell out over $100,000.

  • Forget about compromising with a PHEV - Land Rover's Range Rover P550e Autobiography offers an astounding 51 miles of all-electric range.
  • Land Rover's jump into the PHEV game in 2022/2023 was met with impressive results - stunning design paired with an incredible performance.
  • The new Range Rover PHEV is a powerhouse with a standard 3.0-liter engine producing 542 HP, 590 lb-ft torque, and boasting 51 miles of all-electric range.

In recent years, the plug-in hybrid market has been exploding with interest, investment, and engineering. Adding to the benefits of a hybrid vehicle, PHEVs offer the charging and battery-powered components of an EV many people have become curious about. With a plug-in hybrid, you get to enjoy the luxury of gas and electric movement, together or separately.

There are many models that will boast 30-40 miles of all-electric range, although this doesn't prove to be enough for most drivers. After all, the idea of a PHEV is to cut back on emissions and fuel consumption. If you only get ~30 miles of electric range, that may not be enough to warrant the jump from hybrid to plug-in hybrid powertrain.

That being said, there are a few particular plug-in hybrids that have much more than 30 or even 40 miles. One brand that has dominated this space out of surprise is Land Rover, creating the perfect (and powerful) British luxury SUV . It's not every day you have a brand swing and make it on the first try, so to see the Range Rover plug-in do this well right out the gate is assuring.

In order to give you the most up-to-date and accurate information possible, the data used to compile this article was sourced from Land Rover.

2024 Range Rover Sport Dynamic SE P400 Review: The "Lite" Version for Those Who Deem the Full-Size Too Big

An underdog in the phev market: the range rover p550e autobiography.

One of the more surprising winners in today's plug-in hybrid market is Land Rover. With its Range Rover PHEV series, we see up to 51 miles before its 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six-cylinder engine needs to kick in. This puts the British luxury automaker in a great position to overtake the luxury PHEV segment, and with this model's high power, elegance, and price point, there's an exclusive feel to it we appreciate.

In today's plug-in world, most nameplates travel around 30 to 40 miles in all-electric mode. With the Range Rover PHEV, you see quite a bump up from this average. It's also worth mentioning that the Range Rover plug-in boasts a standard 3.0-liter engine capable of producing 542 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. It's fast, quiet, and eco-friendly. What else could we ask for?

2024 Range Rover PHEV Specifications

It's also worth mentioning that the PHEV version of the P550e is exclusive to the fancy Autobiography trim. It pairs an electric motor with the inline-six engine and boasts an eight-speed automatic transmission, standard all-wheel drive, and an adjustable air suspension system.

10 Things To Know About The Land Rover Range Rover Plug-in Hybrid

Why land rover popped out of nowhere.

Regarding when, where, and how Land Rover jumped into the plug-in hybrid game, this all started in 2022/2023, and the series debuted as a higher trim (Autobiography) for a standard ICE vehicle. Land Rover chose to offer the PHEV Range Rover in addition to a regular gas-only version, which has allowed customers to slowly move to it versus having to do so right away.

As a luxury auto manufacturer, Land Rover has had to trickle in electric design through thoughtfully designed and executed vehicle releases. The luxury car segment can be unforgiving, and when people see an immediate change in engine configuration, it can turn them away from new ideas. Considering this vehicle now trumps the PHEV market for its impeccable range and performance features, we'd agree Land Rover and its Range Rover family are doing a perfect job of executing change.

For those interested in the Land Rover Range Rover PHEV, this model is also quite impressive in the MPG and MPGe departments. Although the EPA has not rated the 2024 nameplate, the official stats per LR are:

2024 Range Rover Sport Autobiography (PHEV) Fuel Economy

You can see that as MPG (gas only), the Autobiography trim is a bit lackluster. However, the second you incorporate electricity into your everyday driving routine, that's when things get exciting. From these official figures, Land Rover has essentially promised ~53 miles of all-electric range combined. However, you can expect closer to 50 on average, with 51 being the quoted EV range across dealers and government agency websites. Whatever the case, for a fairly new PHEV to surpass 50 miles of plug-in range is wild. We haven't seen anyone else do it as of yet, so hats off to Land Rover.

Quick Charge Times, Quicker Acceleration

In addition to being quite the speedster in terms of HP, the Land Rover Range Rover PHEV is a boss when tested in 0-60 MPH timeframes and when charging. For 0-60 MPH test times, you can expect this SUV to hit 60 miles in 4.8 seconds, plus see complete charging in as little as an hour. At Level 2, your PHEV will charge for about 4-5 hours to reach 80 percent, and fast charging stations put it at a whopping 60 minutes of total plug-in time. Whatever you choose, you won't be waiting long.

Land Rover Range Rover: Pricing And Features By Trim Level

Land rover takes on a more electric approach.

In addition to the Range Rover Autobiography PHEV, the company has announced that an all-electric version of its iconic SUV is coming. This will be about the same size and design as the PHEV but will ditch the gas engine. We're seeing this trend grow across the market, luxury or not, and Land Rover has the chance to continue impressing us with its design and engineering prowess.

Of course, for now, we see the PHEV being offered throughout North America and offering the highest all-electric hybrid electric range on the market as of 2024. That's a title the British mega-brand proudly holds. Even though we don't have many electric options as of now through Land Rover/Range Rover, that won't continue to be the case once some of these new and concept vehicles hit production lines.

The all-electric Range Rover does not have any official specs on the internet, but its range will play a big role in its success. If we can mimic the PHEV power of the nameplate, this should be a defining release for the company.

The Autobiography Trim Is The Perfect Spot For A Plug-In Hybrid

If there's one thing we'll say about the Range Rover P550e Autobiography trim, it's that this SUV offers much more than just a PHEV configuration. To be specific, you can expect luxurious interior and exterior features, like leather-appointed seats, deluxe trim and steering wheel wrapping, infotainment with you in mind, driver-assistance technology, a smooth quiet ride experience, a 3.0-liter six-cylinder Ingenium gasoline engine has a 160-kW-motor fitted to the P550e variant, and DC fast charging that can get your battery from 0-80 percent in under an hour. The Range Rover PHEV is a force to be reckoned with, through and through.

The Range Rover Electric Is Set To Have V-8 Levels Of Power And Performance

Just because it's a phev doesn't mean it can't pack an electric punch.

When it comes to driving a hybrid or plug-in model, this shouldn't mean having to compromise. With even the better hybrid makers (Toyota, Honda, etc.) unable to surpass the 50-mile all-electric range on their PHEVs in 2024, we should look to Land Rover for inspiration. Of course, these models costing well over six figures may explain some of the performance enhancements, but who's to say the brand can't someday make its plug-in models 100+ miles.

We know the all-electric Range Rover is coming to North America and Europe shortly, so let's hope the brand spends some time perfecting what it already does so good at. The Autobiography trim has been a decent launch point for Range Rover SUVs, but it's only the beginning of a much stronger, broader rollout from the auto manufacturer.
