Distance Education has for its basis the philosophy that a democratic society has the responsibility to provide facilities for acquisition of knowledge and improvement of skills to those who for some reason or the other are not able to do so through the  conventional system. The growing number of aspiring students has further added to the need for widening educational opportunities through non conventional channels.

The School of Distance Education commenced its activities in 1990. Facilities for contact classes which had been  provided at different venues within the jurisdiction of the University. What needs to be emphasized is that it has been possible for the school to administer the curricula of various programmes of study through the distance mode of instruction without compromising on quality and standards.

The University has discontinued the Distance Education programmes from May 2015. The office of SDE is presently dealing with administrative matters related to old registration. Presently the institution is not holding DEB recognition.

Year of establishment:  1989.

‘ All the Off Campus Centres were closed down as per the directions from the UGC and the  Honourable Chancellor w.e.f from 20.06.2015’

Course Overview

The aim of the Programee is:

• To systematise experiences and strengthen the professional competency of in-service teachers.
• To imbibe the knowledge and develop understanding of various methods and approaches of organising learning experiences of secondary school students.
• To develop skills required in selection and organising learning experiences.
• To understand the nature of the learner and of learning processes.
• To develop skills involved in dealing with the academic and personal problems of learners.
• To acquire knowledge and develop understanding about the various procedures and techniques of evaluation and their classroom application.
• To develop skills involved in selecting, developing and using evaluation tools.
• To provide knowledge and develop understanding about various aspects of school management.
• To develop competencies for organising various instructional and student-support activities.
• To develop an appreciation of the role of the teacher in the prevailing socio-cultural and political context in general, and the educationa1 system in particular.

  Teleconferencing

Teleconferencing is a one-way video and two-way audio facility. Teleconferencing will be held every month. During teleconferencing session, you will get an opportunity to interact by phone in facility or fax with the resource persons/experts who participate in teleconferencing session and clear your doubts immediately.

The teleconferencing facility will be available at the Regional Centre and Selected Study Centres. The teleconferencing schedule will be sent to the Programme In-charge and Regional Director who would inform the students. Teleconferencing is done through Gyan Darshan Channel. Students must regularly attend these sessions. These will help them clarify doubts and interact with other learners all over the country.

Radio Counselling

Radio counselling will be held through FM and students can ask questions free of cost with phone in facilities right from their homes. A toll free telephone number 110012345 has been provided for this purpose.

The programme will also be telecast through DD Metro channel and schedule will be informed to students in advance.

Audio-video Programme

Audio and video programmes for each course have been prepared to support learning for the students. These Audio-video programmes in the form of cassettes are available at all Programme Study Centres. These Audio and video cassettes will be provided for viewing and listening. They can also hire the cassettes for viewing and listening.

Students will be required to complete seventy-five percent attendance in theory counselling to become eligible for appearing in Term-end Examination. Similarly, they will be required to complete ninety percent attendance in practical contact sessions to become eligible for appearing in practical examination.

Continuous Evaluation of Theory Component

Assignments

Assignment is a means of continuing assessment of theory and practical. Assignments will help you to recapitulate the theory and go back to the text again in case students are unable to answer a particular question. Thus assignments also help to reinforce learning in distance learning system of education. These assignments consist of a set of questions and activities that you will answer at your own place by referring your blocks. The assignments will cover all types of questions (long answer type, short answer type, objective type, multiple choice questions and case studies).

The assignments will carry thirty percent weightage. Students will be required to obtain fifty percent marks as pass percentage in each assignment separately. Each assignment will carry 100 marks. In the final result assignments will carry thirty percent weightage.

Term-end Examination

As stated earlier, term-end examination is the major component of the evaluation system and if carries seventy percent weightage in the Final result. The University conducts term-end examination twice a year i.e., in June and December. They can take the examination only after completion of the course, failing which students can take the same in December or June of subsequent years years within the total span of the programme.

In case any student fail to get a pass score in the Tern-end Examination, the person will be eligible to reappear at the next Term-end Examination for that course as and when if is held, within the total span of the Programme.

About Kerala University Distance Education

The University of Travancore or later named the University of Kerala was established in 1937 by Sri Chithira Thirunal Balaram Varma, the Maharaja of Travancore. The University of Kerala is the 16th University of India and later 10 colleges in the Travancore state became the affiliated colleges of the University of Travancore after getting affiliation from the Madras University.

In 1976, the University of Kerala started the Department of Teaching and Research became the first center of distance education in the state. The School of Distance Education is located in the Kariavattom Campus of the University of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram.

Bachelor of Design Course admission Kerala: Last date to apply extended

LBS Centre for Science and Technology has extended the last date for submission of application for admission to the Bachelor of Design (B.Des) Program, Kerala 2024-25.

Applications can now be submitted at https://lbsapplications.kerala.gov.in/ up to 5.6.2024.

B.Des is a course of Four years duration consisting of 8 semesters under the Directorate of Technical Education Kerala. The provisional list of institutions where the B.Des course is offered is given in Annexure 1 of the Prospectus available at https://lbsapplications.kerala.gov.in/.

Eligibility: Only Indian citizens are eligible for admission to B.Des, courses unless otherwise notified. Applicants must have passed Higher Secondary Examination (10+2) or examination equivalent thereto as approved by KTU with at least 45% marks (40% in case of those belonging to reserved category) or passed D.Voc. Stream in the same or allied sector.

Selection Process : Selection will be from the rank list prepared based on the score obtained in the Kerala State Design and Aptitude Test (KS-DAT) to be conducted by LBS Centre. Applicants should qualify in KS-DAT for getting admission to the Government seat. Admission to management seats can be done directly by the management. For admission to management seats, the candidates must have qualified any one of the national level entrance examinations like NATA (National Aptitude Test in Architecture- currently open to students in science stream), UCEED (Undergraduate Common Entrance Exam in Design-open to students in science stream), NID DAT (National Institute of Design, Design Aptitude Test- open to students from all streams), NIFT (National Institute of Fashion Technology Entrance Examination) or the entrance examination(KS-DAT) conducted by LBS Centre.

Application fee is Rs. 1200/- (Rs.600/- for SC/ST).

ന്യൂഡൽഹി : കേരളത്തിൽ 4 വർഷ ബിരുദ പ്രോഗ്രാം ഇക്കൊല്ലം ആരംഭിക്കുമെങ്കിലും യുജിസി മാനദണ്ഡങ്ങൾ പലതും ഒഴിവാക്കിയാണു കോഴ്സ് ഘടന തയാറാക്കിയിരിക്കുന്നത്. മൾട്ടിപ്പിൾ എൻട്രി–എക്സിറ്റ്, ക്രെഡിറ്റ് ട്രാൻസ്ഫർ തുടങ്ങി യുജിസിയുടെ പല നിർദേശങ്ങളും കേരളത്തിലില്ല. ഏകീകൃത സ്വഭാവമില്ലാത്തതു വിദ്യാർഥികളെയും പഠനരീതിയെയും പലതരത്തിൽ ബാധിച്ചേക്കാമെന്നു കേന്ദ്ര വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ മന്ത്രാലയത്തിലെ ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥർ പ്രതികരിച്ചു.

ദേശീയ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ നയത്തിന്റെ (2020) ഭാഗമായി 4 വർഷ ബിരുദ പ്രോഗ്രാം ആവിഷ്കരിച്ചപ്പോൾ മൾട്ടിപ്പിൾ എൻട്രി–എക്സിറ്റ് ഉൾപ്പെടെയുള്ളവ അതിന്റെ ഭാഗമാക്കിയിരുന്നു. ഇതനുസരിച്ച് ഓരോ വർഷവും പഠനം കഴിയുമ്പോൾ നിശ്ചിത ക്രെഡിറ്റ് സ്വന്തമാക്കിയവർക്കു പുറത്തുപോകാനും നിശ്ചിത സമയത്തിനുള്ളിൽ തിരികെയെത്തി കോഴ്സ് പൂർത്തിയാക്കാനും സാധിച്ചിരുന്നു. ആദ്യ വർഷത്തിനു ശേഷം സർട്ടിഫിക്കറ്റ്, രണ്ടാം വർഷത്തിനു ശേഷം ഡിപ്ലോമ, മൂന്നാം വർഷത്തിനു ശേഷം ബിരുദം, നാലാം വർഷത്തിനു ശേഷം ഓണേഴ്സ് ബിരുദം എന്നിവയായിരുന്നു യുജിസിയുടെ നിർദേശം. എന്നാൽ, കേരളത്തിൽ മൂന്നാം വർഷത്തെ ബിരുദം, നാലാം വർഷത്തെ ഓണേഴ്സ് ബിരുദം എന്നിവ മാത്രമാണു വാഗ്ദാനം ചെയ്തിരിക്കുന്നത്. കോഴ്സിന്റെ 40% ക്രെഡിറ്റ് ഓൺലൈൻ കോഴ്സുകളിലൂടെ പൂർത്തിയാക്കാമെന്നാണു യുജിസി നിർദേശം. അതേസമയം, കേരളത്തിൽ എട്ടാം സെമസ്റ്ററിലെ ആകെ ക്രെഡിറ്റിൽ 16 എണ്ണം ഓൺലൈൻ കോഴ്സിലൂടെ നേടണമെന്നാണു നിർദേശിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. ബാക്കി സെമസ്റ്ററുകളിൽ വിജയിക്കാൻ ആവശ്യമായ ക്രെഡിറ്റിന് അധികമായതു നേടാൻ ഓൺലൈൻ കോഴ്സുകളെ ആശ്രയിക്കാമെന്നാണു നിർദേശം. ക്രെഡിറ്റ് ട്രാൻസ്ഫർ രീതിക്കും പല നിയന്ത്രണങ്ങളും ഏർപ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. യുജിസി മാനദണ്ഡപ്രകാരം, അക്കാദമിക് ബാങ്ക് ഓഫ് ക്രെഡിറ്റിൽ രേഖപ്പെടുത്തുന്ന ക്രെഡിറ്റുകൾ ഉപയോഗിച്ചു മറ്റൊരു സർവകലാശാലയിലോ കോളജിലോ പഠനം തുടരാം. എന്നാൽ, കേരളത്തിലെ സ്ഥാപനങ്ങൾ നിലവിൽ നൽകിയിരിക്കുന്ന നിർദേശം അനുസരിച്ച് ഒരേ സർവകലാശാലയിലെ കോളജുകളിലേക്കു മാത്രമാണ് ഇത്തരത്തിൽ മാറാൻ സാധിക്കുക. സ്ഥാപനത്തിനു പുറത്തുനിന്നുള്ളവർക്കും വാല്യൂ ആഡഡ് കോഴ്സുകൾ തയാറാക്കി അവതരിപ്പിക്കാമെന്നായിരുന്നു യുജിസിയുടെ നിർദേശമെങ്കിൽ കേരളത്തിലെ കോഴ്സ് ഘടന അനുസരിച്ച് സ്ഥാപനം തന്നെ അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്ന കോഴ്സുകളാണ് ഇതിൽ ഭാഗമാകുന്നത്.

ആദ്യ സെമസ്റ്ററിലെ ഫൗണ്ടേഷൻ കോഴ്സ് എല്ലാ വിഷയങ്ങളുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട അടിസ്ഥാന വിവരങ്ങൾ ഉൾപ്പെടുത്തി തയാറാക്കണമെന്നായിരുന്നു യുജിസിയുടെ നിർദേശം. 12–ാം ക്ലാസിൽ പഠിക്കാത്ത വിഷയത്തിൽ ഉപരിപഠനം നടത്താൻ വിദ്യാർഥികളെ പര്യാപ്തമാക്കുകയായിരുന്നു ലക്ഷ്യം. എന്നാൽ കേരളത്തിൽ ഭാഷ, തനതു വിജ്ഞാനം, നൈപുണ്യശേഷി തുടങ്ങിയവയുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട വിഷയങ്ങളാണു കോഴ്സിലുള്ളത്.

4-year UG programme rollout in Kerala: ABC to ensure mobility of students

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) that enables students to deposit their credits earned for various courses in a centralised digital repository and redeem it in the same higher educational institution or another institution when required, is set to be a game changer in the four-year undergraduate programme (FYUGP) that colleges and universities in the state are set to roll out this year.

ABC has been envisaged in the National Education Policy (NEP), 2020 to primarily facilitate the academic mobility of students, giving them the freedom to study across various higher educational institutions in the country. The credits earned by students will be deposited virtually in their ABC Academic Account maintained by the Union Education Ministry.

If the student moves to a different institution, the accumulated credits get transferred to the account of the new institution. Credits may be transferred from an institution to be accumulated in another programme offered by the same or another institution. Once the credit is redeemed for the award of the above, it would be irrevocably debited from the respective student’s Academic Account of ABC. Across India, close to 29.87 crore students in 1,989 higher educational institutions have already come under the ABC framework.

As per UGC regulations, ABC shall not accept any document pertaining to course credits directly from students and shall entertain such documents as valid only when the same are transmitted by the respective registered higher education institution awarding the credit.

Kerala State Higher Education Council (KSHEC) vice-chairman Rajan Gurukkal said all state universities in Kerala have already come on board the ABC framework. As per latest data, 62 higher educational institutions have on-boarded the ABC platform in the state. From 3.36 lakh in December 2023, the ABC IDs of students created from the state has increased to 4.40 lakh till May 2024.

“Once the credit data of the student is uploaded in the ABC academic account, the student can approach any university in the country for lateral entry for a particular course and earn a degree. Once the ABC framework is internationally recognised, it can even facilitate the seamless movement of students overseas,” Gurukkal said. Also, it would help students take a break from studies and rejoin the programme at a later stage by redeeming the credits accrued.

According to Gurukkal, universities will be prompted to strictly adhere to their academic calendar for conducting examinations and announcing results in a timely manner. “In case a student earns the required credits for award of degree, he can approach another university, redeem the credits and obtain the degree from that institution in case he feels the system there is more efficient,” Gurukkal said.

The ABC system enables students to select the best courses or combination of courses to suit their aptitude and also choose a pace for their studies. In addition to regular programmes, courses undergone by students through online modes through national schemes such as SWAYAM, NPTEL, V-Lab or of any specified university, shall also be considered for credit transfer and credit accumulation.

The UGC regulations on ABC lay down that it will be not limited to distance or a non-contact mode but shall extend to “amalgamation of various existing and futuristic teaching-learning models.” Notably, students will also have the freedom to take additional courses of their aptitude, beyond the curriculum prescribed for degree programmes, and add the credits in their respective Academic bank account.

Beneficial system

According to academicians, students can no longer be restricted by higher educational institutions from pursuing limited electives. The introduction of ABC has facilitated students to pursue diverse courses such as mathematics as major and music as minor from the same institution or different institutions.

“As per the UGC’s regulations, institutions coming on-board the ABC framework have automatically agreed to recognise and reward the credits transferred by students of other institutions. So students are less likely to face hardships in mobility,” said an official involved in preparation of FYUGP model curriculum of KSHEC.

Conditions of Academic Bank of Credits

While students are encouraged to choose among various courses offered by one or more of the ABC-registered higher education institutions, they are required to earn at least 50% of the credits from the higher education institution awarding the degree. Also, in terms of core subjects, the student will have to earn a certain number of credits specified by the degree-awarding higher education institution in which the student is enrolled. Credits earned by students shall be deposited in the respective Academic Bank Account with ABC and shall be valid for not exceeding seven years. Once any credit is redeemed for the award of degree, such credit shall be irrevocably debited from the respective student’s academic bank account.
