Screen-reader and keyboard navigation.

  • Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all of the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website. These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.

The Next Generation of Office Communication Tech

  • Ethan Murray

future of communication presentation

You thought Zoom and Slack were high-tech? Buckle up.

Covid-19 will change the office environment. But it’s not a choice between co-location and virtual. New technologies allow a mixed-reality environment. For instance, mixed-reality programs such as Sneek and Pukkateam show remotely working colleagues in tiles with periodically updated snapshots, so employees can know who is at their desk, on a call, or drinking a coffee and perhaps up for a chat. With a mouse click, teammates can instantly turn a snapshot into a live video call. Online platforms will allow companies to perform much larger focus groups with remote employees to check in on how they are managing. And virtual collaboration tools such as online sticky notes, shared digital whiteboards and live co-editing of wikis, slides and documents will continue to bring people together. Like the grainy Skype calls of 2010 that pre-dated today’s Zoom boom, mixed reality technologies becoming popular today will likely be far surpassed in the near future. Ten years from now, we will look at the current crop of virtual office, focus group and collaboration tools with the same disdain we now have for crackly phone calls.

Most knowledge workers in 2020 are familiar with mixed reality tools like Zoom, Teams, and Slack that enable them to meet in virtual locations. By merging real and virtual worlds to produce new environments, employees who relied on in-person office interactions as recently as nine months ago now meet on virtual tropical islands, virtually “stand” in front of presentations beamed around the world, or maintain banter and team spirit with timely GIFs and emojis mixed into their workday messages.

The Future of Communication

In the digital age, technology is transforming how and what we communicate..

Posted July 21, 2020 | Reviewed by Jessica Schrader

The future is notoriously difficult to predict. For instance, in one scene from the cult classic sci-fi movie Blade Runner , the main character, Deckard, played by Harrison Ford, is in a bar. He makes a phone call to Rachel, with whom he’s falling in love, and invites her to join him for a drink. But while the future Los Angeles involves off-world colonies, cyborgs, or "replicants" as they are termed, and hover cars, Deckard places the call from a hard-wired "Vid" phone on the wall. Apparently, foreseeing the invention of mobile phones was a step too far for the 1982 movie.

Future tech and communication Predicting the future is even thornier when considering human communication. From the perspective of technological innovation , we are living in a digital age: technology is transforming the ways we communicate with one another, and interact with the world around us. Meanwhile, other technological pipe dreams that were once only the preserve of science fiction are now becoming reality.

For instance, John Anderton, the character played by Tom Cruise in the 2002 movie Minority Report —originally a short story by Philip K. Dick, as was Blade Runner—wears a data glove, providing a sophisticated gesture-based interface system. But touch-based computing is now de rigueur, with the pinch, pull, and swipe features of Apple iPads and iPhones having led the way in the 2000s. In computer gaming, the Wii in 2006, and later, Microsoft Kinect consoles developed similar ways of interacting and controlling virtual characters and actions. Devices such as these are surely but a prelude of what is to come.

MIT computer scientist John Underkoffler predicted, in his 2010 TED talk , that virtual touch-based computing, à la Minority Report , is the future of human-computer interfaces; and at the time of writing, he is leading the development of an immersive human-computer interface environment that aims to fully replicate the science fiction of fully intuitive gesture-based systems.

Perhaps an even more exciting area of research, one that will transform how we communicate with computers over the longer term, is so-called brain-computer interfaces. In the 1995 film Johnny Mnemonic —a cyberpunk action thriller, based on the short story by William Gibson—the protagonist, played by Keanu Reeves, wears a cybernetic brain implant that stores information that can be extracted.

Today’s research on brain-computer interfaces works on a related idea: the brain makes use of electrical signals—an electrical code—to transmit and process information. For instance, sensory information, such as light and sound, harvested by the eyes and ears, is transduced into an electrical nerve impulse that the brain can process. Research on brain-computer interfaces works on the same principle—the idea is that as the brain runs on electrical signals, and assuming these can be accurately read, then the signals should allow us to communicate with external devices via the transmission of electrical impulses directly from the brain. For instance, it should be possible, at least in theory, to harness the brain signals that move your arm and hand to control a robotic arm to, say, pick up a cup of coffee.

Research of this kind is ongoing. It is already becoming possible for amputees to use prosthetic limbs with the aid of computer software; and the aim is to interpret the brain’s electric signals—to control action through thought. In research undertaken by the U.S. government’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), subjects who have lost limbs are now able to ‘feel’ sensations, due to electronic communication between ‘bionic’ prosthetics and the brain. This works by using microprocessors in the bionic limb to ‘complete’ the brain’s neural circuit . Outside such specialised research venues, cochlear implants, allowing the hard of hearing to hear, are currently the most widely available use for this technology. The principle enables brain signals to communicate with the implant, thereby overcoming the damaged part of the ear. In the future, it may be possible for implants in the brain to allow us to communicate directly with and control a wide array of devices, using the power of thought alone, as recently advocated by Elon Musk’s Neuralink project, which proposes embedding microchips into the human brain .

In terms of interpersonal communication, some of the earliest predictions about mobile or virtual communication have come true. The hand-held communicators used by Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock in the original 1970s episodes of Star Trek are essentially hands-free mobile devices, with Bluetooth earpieces. That said, contemporary mobile phones do, nevertheless, require earth-orbiting satellites; hence, their communication range does not encompass subspace transmission, and as such, is not intergalactic—just yet.

Computers and smartphones now come with fixed cameras as standard. This means that we can see the person we are talking to, in real time—media apps such as FaceTime and Skype are cases in point. The next step, perhaps, is the so-called telepresence robot. These are mobile units that host a camera and speaker that can be controlled remotely by someone whose voice and image can be projected. And the virtual person can not only see, via their remote camera, but also follow around and otherwise interact with the person with whom they are conversing. The scope for teleconferencing, and ‘remote’ tours of a specific venue, such as visiting a real-estate proposition, a new factory, or a construction site, are obvious. While today’s telepresence robots are not cheap, the cost is likely to come down and the systems will improve as the technology advances.

The Ratchet Effect The rapidly changing face of communication is underpinned by what has been termed the ratchet effect. The idea is that culture provides a complex network of shared knowledge, systems, behaviours, and practices. This means that by being born into a given culture, shared knowledge is not something we have to learn anew; rather, and paraphrasing the words of Sir Isaac Newton, we stand on the shoulders of previous generations in order to build up and further advance our knowledge base, including technological developments. Each generation takes the developments of the previous one and extends them; and hey presto, in an increasingly short amount of time, this ratchets up the complexity of the technological advances that see the light of day.

To illustrate, let’s take a whistle-stop tour of some of the headline technological developments of the 20th century. The century began with the infancy of airplanes, automobiles, and radio; it ended with space rockets, space stations, computers, mobile phones, and, in 1997, the advent of wireless (Wi-Fi) internet. The 21st century opened with the launch of mobile internet capability, with so-called third-generation or 3G wireless mobile telecommunications. Today, with 4G and beyond, we take the internet-everywhere almost for granted.

Immediacy and reach: The transformational nature of digital modes of communication It is doubtless true that the digital age has transformed the nature of human communication. Nowhere is this more evident than in terms of the immediacy and reach afforded by digital forms of communication.

In terms of immediacy, social media updates, and instant messaging enable instantaneous communication. Prior to the advent of digital communication technology, communication with those with whom we were not physically co-located required travel, or correspondence via snail mail. A letter to a person in the next town might take a day or two to arrive. But today we can communicate with those on the other side of the world in real time, even without picking up the phone.

And in terms of reach, the immediacy of our communications reaches an unprecedented number of people, determined by our number of friends on Facebook, followers on Twitter, and connections on LinkedIn, to mention only three popular social media platforms.

The notion of reach, is especially striking, as digital technology is transforming the nature of the social networks with whom we can communicate. In analogue communication, a social network can be thought of as having a limit that relates to Dunbar’s Number: around 150. This is a cognitive limit to the number of people with whom one can maintain stable social relationships—proposed by Robin Dunbar, who found a correlation between primate brain size and average social group size.

 Vyvyan Evans

In contrast, in digital communication, our social network is only constrained, in principle, by the number of people who have access to the internet—around 3.2 billion people and counting. On Twitter, for instance, Barack Obama reaches over 100 million people with each tweet.

New systems of communication: Emoji In addition to transforming the nature of our communicative reach, the digital age is also providing opportunities and innovations in terms of new forms and systems of communication. And while the underlying principles of communication remain fundamentally the same, how we communicate is and will continue to be impacted as a consequence.

A salient case in point, in the early part of the 21st century has been the emergence of emoji as a global means of communication. In my book, The Emoji Code , I made the following argument. Technology is not changing the cooperative impulse that underpins communication. Nor is it changing the principles that undergird systems of communication. Rather, technology provides new avenues and opportunities; it provides new channels of communication.

Source: Vyvyan Evans

But in certain respects, these channels can be impoverished, initially at least, in terms of current systems of communication. Face-to-face spoken interaction is multimodal. It is a fully immersed experience, in which participants communicate using the full panoply of modes, and make use of linguistic, paralinguistic, kinesic, and visual systems of communication. Patterns of eye gaze and prosody convey different aspects of social meaning that fill out the linguistic meaning.

In contrast, abbreviated textspeak is impoverished in the multimodality stakes. And this is where emoji has come into its own; it has begun to allow digital communication to replicate some of the non-verbal communicative cues available to face-to-face interaction. It is not that emoji represents a step-change in communication; rather, and somewhat more prosaically, emoji is providing an inevitable step in plugging a gap in a new channel of communication: the digital.

Without emoji, part of what provides a well-rounded communicative message is missing. And given that textspeak is a visual form of representation, it is inevitable that pictographic representations should help provide some of the paralinguistic and kinesic cues.

Emoji provides a starting point to provide a multimodal system of communication, fit for purpose, in the digital age. We might speculate on how emoji will develop—in the short term, animated, avatar-like emojis might be one way in which textspeak can be further enhanced by multimodal cues. Facial expressions and gestures are what make us who we are: let’s see it, and not be afraid of seeing it, in emoji!

Whatever the next stage in the evolution of emoji and, indeed, other emerging systems of digital communication, the driver is, ultimately, the cooperative intelligence that makes us the unparalleled communicators we are. Emoji makes us more effective communicators in our 21st-century world of communication.

Introduction

By Joanne Henry, IABC Trends Watch Task Force Chair

The IABC Trends Watch Task Force is pleased to share six key trends we see shaping communicators in 2021 and over the next few years. Some are a continuation or an evolution of cultural trends already in place, and others are brand new, such as the radical changes in the work place due to COVID-19. Our eight task force and two staff members come from London, Calgary, Jamaica, Dallas, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Reykjavík, the greater Boston area and Chicago. We do our best to watch what is happening in Southeast Asia, Africa, Australia and New Zealand, and will do our best to keep the global lens as wide as possible through this task force.

We stand on the (virtual) shoulders of last year’s Trends Watch Task Force and our goal is to dive deeper this year into how these trends are impacting and will impact communicators and their organizations. Even more, what can or should we be doing now that we know more about what is coming at us?

Below are quick takeaways below, and where you have interest, download and dive into full the report, along with their sources, for more reading and information.

Key Takeaways of Our Top 6 Trends

  • The workplace is emerging as the great differentiator.

“Remote work, in-office or hybrid?” Will anyone ask what we do anymore?

Many large organizations are already in planning to bring employees back together, while others have pivoted hard to an almost exclusively remote workforce. Communicators will be newly challenged in remote and hybrid groups to find new ways to achieve alignment, the desired work culture, motivation, and — let’s be honest — consistent productivity.

  • The benefits of equity, diversity and inclusion apply to the communication profession.

Communicators have an opportunity now more than ever to advance our profession by engaging in cross-communications with diverse global constituencies. We are all communicating to increasingly diverse audiences — what do our own teams look like in terms of truly diverse backgrounds and experiences, in addition to the demographics of race, gender and visible differences? IABC is in an enviable role as the only professional global business communications association. But only if we use it!

  • Privacy and the Internet of Behaviors (or “We know what you did last night”) pose important ethical considerations.

Knowing and tracking individuals’ behaviors, not just what they say they will do, is either a marketer’s dream or an ethical nightmare. We think it is somewhere in between, but what is certain is that technology is exponentially increasing the ability to reach into human daily interaction, to respond to them and to even anticipate them. Communicators will be in the middle — again — and can be the ones to understand the implications and responsibilities of using this new technology for good.

  • The human experience is what ties us all together — it needs to surface and swim.

Communicators are at the critical hub of integrating the human experience into any business or community mission, initiative or even day-to-day operations. With the global pandemic, we have had the awful experience of shared grief of our impact from the virus, violence, and the economic and psychic disruption that has hit some populations far harder than others. Communications have the ability to share beyond facts, to share emotion, to tell stories visually and viscerally, and to motivate change. Look no further than the videos of people around the world, leaning out windows, stopping their bicycles, ringing bells and clapping for health care workers coming home from their shifts tending the sick and dying. We have seen the future — and it is human.

  • We must keep watch over disinformation and deepfakes.

On 25 January 2021, Twitter released Birdwatch, a new tool to fight disinformation by crowdsourcing context, information and sources. In every day since, a vocal chorus on dozens of social channels have argued that calling anything disinformation is a slippery slope. In the wake of social media bans of some unnamed government officials, there has been a hot debate about culpability by the platforms, free speech and censorship. Communicators will be asked to take a stand. New skills will include the ability to ensure your organization’s message gets out and that resources are available to identify and stop the damage of deepfakes and disinformation in your own organization.

  • Radical transparency: Will it save us or be used against us?

One of the most sure antidotes to deep mistrust seems to be a response with absolute transparency: This is who we are, what we stand for, where we made mistakes, how we hire, what you’re all paid — what I’m paid — and so much more. Among communicators, the words “transparency,” along with “authenticity,” are more than slogans we put in into company messaging. At least, we hope so. However, radical transparency is easier said than done. Communicators are the ones who must ask: “What do you really mean by that?” Even more importantly, “How far are you willing to go with it?” If we let our carefully crafted language get ahead of our actions, mistrust will only grow deeper and even worse, scar over.

From a lingering pandemic to growing geopolitical tensions, never-ending technological disruption and an accelerating climate crisis—at no time in history have business leaders been forced to confront such complexity. Today's leaders must navigate these challenges while creating resilient companies that can thrive in any economic, social, political, or technological environment. Accordingly, there is no established playbook for the myriad of issues that corporate communications teams are now grappling with as they seek to navigate changing stakeholder expectations while advancing the business interests of their companies.

To address this void, we set out to understand from senior communicators themselves what they are experiencing on the front lines. Our research reveals that the role of the corporate communicator has forever changed, with new expectations and rules of engagement. The message from nearly 250 of the world’s most senior communicators is clear: to meet the challenge of this moment, the corporate communication function must advance from operating as a transactional cost center delivering on a communications agenda to being an indispensable partner generating measurable business value.

Some notable insights:

  • The role of communications has become more materially important to CEOs, Boards, and the C-Suite.
  • The modern corporate communications function is agile, multidisciplinary, and insights-driven.
  • CommsTech is already ushering in a new era and communicators can use it to deliver quantifiable value to the business.
  • An increased focus on the workplace, workforce, and well-being of employees isn’t a pandemic fad.
  • Expectations around social issues have shifted the agenda — and there is no turning back.
  • A modern organizational structure only gets you so far.
  • Communicators are increasingly acting as change agents, enabling ongoing transformation.
  • The lines between communications and marketing continue to blur, creating new challenges and opportunities.
  • In an increasingly complex and activist multi-stakeholder world, the corporate brand matters now more than ever.
  • While the importance of the communications function is increasing, resources to deliver are lagging.

Further exploration of these insights, along with a rich compendium of additional research findings, benchmark data, and a playbook of tactics, can be found in the Edelman 2021 Future of Corporate Communications Study.

THE INSTITUTE Fifth-generation wireless technology is causing a lot of excitement in the telecommunications industry, and differences of opinions. Some see 5G as the next evolution in wireless data communications, promising higher bandwidth and data rates, with significantly fewer transmission delays. Others, however, say the technology will be revolutionary, enabling a host of new applications including humanoid robots , connected cars, and the Internet of Things, with its billions of devices laden with embedded sensors.

Wireless carriers have started building 5G networks even though issues—like defining standards to ensure interoperability and outlining security requirements—are still being worked out. How the first 5G networks, expected to debut in 2020, will be built is important because of the effect they will have on cellular-based businesses and multimedia services.

Concerned that vital issues aren’t being addressed, the IEEE Future Directions Committee , the organization’s R&D arm, in December launched the IEEE 5G Initiative . Its purpose is to engage industry, government, and academia to work together and lay the foundation so that the opportunities envisioned for 5G can be realized. The initiative is run by a steering committee and organized by working groups that cover education, events, publications, standards, and other areas. The IEEE Standards Association and 16 IEEE societies and organizational units are participating.

“IEEE has a special role to play because it’s a neutral organization,” says IEEE Fellow Gerhard Fettweis, the initiative’s cochair. “IEEE can collect ideas and feedback about 5G from operators, researchers, and government regulators to understand the different proposals in the works, identify any problems, and propose solutions.” Fettweis is a professor at Technische Universität in Dresden, Germany, and a senior research scientist with the International Computer Science Institute, an independent nonprofit in Berkeley, Calif.

“IEEE is in a unique position to collect input from around the world and contribute to the whole 5G ecosystem,” adds Fettweis’s cochair, IEEE Senior Member Ashutosh Dutta. “That’s because among its societies and regions are members who are experts in signal processing, network communication, software engineering, antennas, and other related technologies covering all layers of a communication system. It’s a true global initiative.” Dutta is a lead member of the AT&T technical staff in Middletown, N.J.

NEW NETWORKS

Throughout the history of mobile communications, data speeds have jumped incrementally within each generation of the network. That will be the case with 5G as well, but much more is expected of it, including improved performance, capacity, and speed, and a network that operates the world over, no matter where or from which device a user connects.

Carriers will be working to reduce delays in transmission time. The 5G latency is expected to be less than 1 millisecond; 4G networks have a latency of 25 milliseconds. (Latency is the amount of time it takes for a packet of data to get from one forwarding point to another.) Low latency is particularly important for such applications as self-driving cars and robot-aided surgeries, where the slightest delay in transmission time could mean life or death.

But simply updating hardware and software with the latest technologies won’t be enough. The new networks will need to handle billions of devices expected from the Internet of Things and other new applications. It must provide connections that are 100 times faster than current network speeds.

That’s where software-defined networks (SDNs) and network functions virtualization (NFV) fit in. They support the flexibility and dynamics of the growing number of advanced terminals and intelligent machines at the networks’ edges. SDNs can provide improved speeds and lower latency while eliminating bottlenecks.

SDNs decouple hardware (that, say, forwards IP packets) from software (the control plane that carries signaling traffic for routing through network devices). Software is executed not necessarily in the equipment but maybe in the cloud or in clusters of distributed servers. That means networks could be built and reconfigured centrally in an automated fashion, rather than having network managers hop from device to device to make changes manually, according to Dutta.

NFV is often paired with SDNs. The concept uses CPU and resource virtualization and other cloud-computing technologies such as orchestration, network slicing, and mobile edge computing to migrate network functions from dedicated hardware to virtual machines running on general-purpose hardware. NFV can boost speed, flexibility, and efficiency when deployed with the new services expected to be ushered in by 5G. Components can be upgraded to accommodate a service provider’s needs.

SPREADING THE WORD

To help people get a better understanding of 5G and its capabilities as well as uncover issues and concerns, IEEE has been holding summits around the world since 2015. Events have been held in Canada, China, Denmark, Germany, India, and the United States. More are scheduled this year in Finland, Jamaica, Japan, Morocco, Portugal, and elsewhere. At the 5G summits, which are open to anyone, experts discuss topics such as applications for smart cities, bandwidth limitations, network architecture, management challenges, and the need for standards.

“We are working with each IEEE region and section to bring these summits to their doorsteps,” Dutta says. “Each country has different wireless spectrums and resource allocations.”

The IEEE 5G Initiative is developing a road map to help carriers, network operators, service providers, and others find the best path forward. The initiative aims to identify trends in innovation and technology, as well as report on research being conducted in areas such as application services, millimeter waves, the mobile edge cloud, and security.

“Developed in conjunction with the initiative’s working groups, the road map will be a living document with a clear set of accountable recommendations that will be updated annually,” Fettweis says.

STANDARDS are A MUST

Companies including Cisco and Ericsson have already unveiled NFV infrastructures for 5G SDNs and the IoT. South Korea hopes to introduce 5G services in time for the 2018 Winter Olympics there, and the European Union wants 5G mobile broadband to be available around all its major roads and rail links by 2025.

The dilemma with those projects is that 5G standards have yet to be developed. Se veral standards bodies are working to create them, but Dutta says he fears they might overlook some fundamentals.

“They are focused on developing the architecture and the requirements but not on such things as the underlying technology aspects,” he says.

IEEE is well-positioned to develop 5G standards, according to Konstantinos Karachalios, managing director of the IEEE Standards Association, in Piscataway, N.J. Nearly all wireless communications, he notes, go through the IEEE 802 suite of standards —which includes Ethernet and Wi-Fi, the universal enablers of wireless and localized Internet access.

“The IEEE 802 ecosystem will play a central role in the next generation of connectivity,” Karachalios says. “This technology has an impact across most of IEEE’s technical societies and standards activities.

“IEEE wants to work together with other groups to develop a vision for how it can help connect the unconnected and improve the connection for those who already have one.”

One technology the initiative is looking at, he says, is so-called frugal 5G, which “will help those who are still using 3G technologies to transition toward the next generation of telecommunications in an effective, interoperable, and standardized way that enables greater innovation. We are also addressing the impact of 5G technology based on regional needs and requirements.

“We welcome others to join us to solve some of the regulatory, technological, economic, and consumer hurdles associated with making 5G happen,” Karachalios says.

Future woman on phone

The tools we rely upon to communicate today were only science fiction 50 years ago. Today, you can purchase a smartphone and make calls, surf the web, play games, run applications and accomplish more than most speculative fiction authors dared to dream. So what's next?

In the short term, we'll likely see basic cell phones slowly fade away. As smartphones become more common and less expensive, more people will adopt them. The process is gradual. As with most new technologies, a group of enthusiastic adopters leads the way. Sometimes, the general population will follow the early pioneers — the compact disc is a good example of such technology. In other cases, the early adopters end up owning technology that becomes obsolete without ever finding wide acceptance — like LaserDiscs.

Smartphones seem to be in the first category. Products like the Apple iPhone and Google's Android operating system have pushed the smartphone out of the world of gadget geeks and into the mass market. In 2010, the first 4G smartphone for a major carrier in the United States made an appearance. It was the HTC EVO 4G, running on Sprint's WiMAX network [source: CNET ]. At the time, the 4G network allowed for faster data transfer speeds than other networks.

The internet will continue to play an increasing role in communication. Voice over Internet Protocol ( VoIP ), which allows people to make calls over an internet service instead of a phone line, already plays a large role in several communication products and services. Skype, Google Hangouts and Whatsapp let users communicate with networks of people through their phones or computers. With the rise of the web, people now have a platform from which they can address the world. In the past, only celebrities and politicians could address so many people at one time. Now, anyone with an internet connection can do the same thing.

This may lead to changes in everything from entertainment to politics. Using the web as a communication tool, people can find an audience more easily than ever before. It might not be long until a relatively unknown person uses the internet to win enough support and become elected president of the United States.

So far, we've looked at some fairly mundane advances in communication. But what about the distant future?

Presentation Geeks

The Latest Presentation Trends To Keep An Eye On In 2023

Table of contents.

Prese ntations are used in virtually every industry. From teaching and training to sales and marketing, presentations are a vital method of communication that, when used effectively, can have a profound impact on your audience.

Capturing your audience’s attention is key to a great presentation. This often starts with the presentation design and various design elements. Whether it be the color of the background, the type of shapes or elements on each slide, or the overall presentation design, you should be mindful of the design trends in the presentation world.

In this blog, we will explore the hot presentation design trends for 2023 and how you might use them for your business.

Why Is Keeping Up With Presentation Trends So Important?

As we’ve briefly mentioned above, your presentation design can have quite an impact on how your audience engages with the presentation material. When an audience sees a presentation that stands out, it will stick in their mind after the presentation is over. This is what businesses want when it comes to crafting powerful presentations.

If your presentation is bland and stale, your information will feel bland and stale. On the other hand, if your design or visual content is too over the top, it can take away from the information you are trying to convey to your audience.

Striking this balance in your design is key to a successful PowerPoint presentation. Often, presentation trends are popular because they are effective when communicating to an audience while also drawing the eye.

Let's Dive Into Some Of The Latest Presentation Design Trends

A modern presentation usually involves set color palettes, asymmetric layouts, different shape s, and other design elements.

Let’s take a look at a few of the modern presentations and modern design trends for 2023 that you might consider using for your next presentation.

Abstract Shapes That Dominate Slides

future of communication presentation

One of the popular presentation design trends taking over the digital world right now is abstract and geometric shapes. Whether you’re creating a Google Slides, Prezi, Canva, or PowerPoint presentation design, shapes, and image overlays can be a great way to take your presentations from boring to bold.

In this example here , triangle shapes and images have been used to keep and direct the attention of the audience.

future of communication presentation

It’s also important to note that these shapes and elements don’t take away from the content on the slides, rather, they create an engaging slide that piques the viewer’s visual interest and keeps them informed.

Unique AI Generated Motion Graphics & Images

Another design trend we see emerging in 2023 is the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Designers utilize programs to create animated graphics, images, flowing shapes, and other design elements.

AI generated graphics can be used to create a unique design and custom images for your business slide decks. This, along with the growing demand for virtual reality likely means we will see increased use of Artificial Intelligence throughout the graphic design industry.

Inclusive Visuals, Graphics and Fonts

A big presentation design trend we have seen in the past couple of years and into 2023 is the use of inclusive visuals. The graphic design industry has seen a big move towards accessibility and inclusivity. This has meant using different shapes, fonts, and images that reflect a more inclusive community.

Not only do these inclusive visuals, graphics, and fonts have visual appeal, but they also mean that your presentations and slides are more accessible to a larger audience.

Modern Minimalism - Say More With Less

future of communication presentation

A design trend we are seeing pop up across a lot of different industries is a kind of modern minimalism. The famous saying goes “keep it simple, stupid” and you could argue that the same applies to PowerPoint presentations.

While a trendy PowerPoint presentation design, neon colors, and colorful text blocks might initially grab the eyes, it can also distract your audience and take away from the information you are trying to communicate.

In this example below, we’ve created modern slides for Indigo that lean towards a minimalistic style. The presentation uses their brand palette and custom fonts to great an engaging presentation with a personal touch that doesn’t distract the viewer.

Dark Modes - Sleek and Secure

future of communication presentation

One of the popular graphic design trends for 2023 utilizes dark mode and dark backgrounds to make their slides stand out in the crowd without overwhelming the audience.

A dark background and dark theme can create depth in your graphic designs which can pull your audience in.

These dark PowerPoint presentation trends don’t necessarily require you only to use blacks and greys in your color schemes. Instead, you can use different shades of some dark colors that will create a dark mode style of presentation.

T he end result is something that the audience expects but still engages them throughout your presentation.

Making An Impact With Muted Images

future of communication presentation

While color palettes, bold color blocks, serif fonts, and other design trends all seem to be on the rise, current presentation design trends have also seen an increased use of muted image overlays.

Muted images are images that have been edited with a filter that dulls the brightness and makes them a bit moodier. Instead of immediately grabbing the eye of the viewer, these images blend more into the background and can create more depth in your presentations.

BIG, Bold Backgrounds

future of communication presentation

One last new trend we’ve seen in presentations this year is big, bold style, particularly when it comes to the background. With eye-catching backgrounds, you can immediately grab your audience’s attention and keep them engaged throughout the entire presentation.

While a minimalistic trend may cater to certain audiences, big backgrounds can help you stand out in the crowd.

When it comes to taking design tips, you need to consider your content, your audience, and your overall brand identity. So while nature-inspired themes and geometric shapes might work for some brands, bold colors, big backgrounds, and fun fonts might work for others.

In this example for the Seatle Krakken , we’ve matched the vibe of the sports brand with bright colors and bold backgrounds.

Importance of communication skills in presentation

future of communication presentation

Effective communication, fresh perspectives, and enhanced teamwork have created some of the world’s best projects. People who can communicate their desires, goals, and wishful outcomes are game-changers, and those people are valuable for any architectural company. It’s hard to talk about where you could be in 10 or 20 years. However, focusing on mastering your communication skills while you’re still young and improving intellectually, will make you ideally suited for future leadership positions.

Words depict your personality

What makes architects unique is the way we think, and to let the world know what your ideas are about, you must know how to communicate well. The building design has evolved to incorporate innovative design, construction methods, and social elements, resulting in the opportunity for architects to integrate knowledge from various fields into the design process. Sometimes trying to convey everything in a particular design can create chaos. What I mean by that is if you’re trying to cram 8 ideas into one project, it muddles the water and none of your ideas are accurately communicated. Instead, try to focus on solving the problem with one or two ideas. You will meet a lot of new people from all walks of life. Take advantage of these opportunities to reflect on your career progress and learn from them.

Importance of communication skills in presentation - Sheet1

Socialize and Influence people.

Great pioneers of businesses, organizations, institutions are all very clear on what they want and are very good at communicating these ideas efficiently to people and get work done. People of varying knowledge and experience levels should be able to understand what you’re talking about. The real challenge is to be brief but comprehensive; try to be as detailed as possible whilst using as little words as possible.  Plus, Staying empathetic will help you get along with everyone in the workplace. Become a person they can turn to openly share their notions without judgment. In this way, you provide the support, opportunity, and ensure the maximum results.

Importance of communication skills in presentation - Sheet2

When you present, you are in charge of the room.

Jurors and critics want to hear and discuss big ideas. Good communication skills can ease these interactions, and ensure that you can get your point across calmly and clearly, and also take on board the responses. The purpose of a presentation is to get them to understand the concept and approach and to engage the space in their minds. Anything you are trying to convince a jury in words has to be correlated to the illustrations.

So, there should be enough visual material on the wall to make your life easy explaining it during design juries. The words that we choose can make a big difference in whether your project is understood.

Importance of communication skills in presentation - Sheet3

Comprehend the Feedback

future of communication presentation

The jury process is not always about your presentation skills but an opportunity to improve your active listening skills. Listening is an active form of communication. Listen to what people tell you. Design jurors and reviewers only want to explore the ideas behind the project. Give them what they want, and don’t refrain from talking about the process and how the structure has been developed. Concentrate on what they are saying and avoid interruptions until they are through speaking. Seek feedback and ask questions when in the position to speak. As we know, Practice makes you perfect. Form a group like mock viva with your friends, and invite them to critique your work. This will not only allow you to see your idea from a different angle but also allow you to prevent mistakes and practice for the day.

Importance of communication skills in presentation - Sheet4

In the field of architecture, communication between the architect and his organization is based on everything from verbal communication to computer-generated architectural drawings and images. Architect’s duties require specific skills for any project—designing, engineering, managing, supervising, and communicating with clients and builders. It eventually comes down to teamwork and execution. Coordinating the responsibilities of all members is crucial for a successful design. Communication makes it easier to function collectively, and also makes use of the strength of each individual to meet the project deadlines. It’s all about getting the right information to the right people at the right time. Misunderstanding is a common distraction from design intentions among teams that do not take the time to understand one another.

Importance of communication skills in presentation - Sheet5

Clients, Us and the project

The collective vision among the architect and client is directly related to the success of a project. The choice of an architect by the client depends on his satisfaction gathered during the discussion where conversation skills play a vital role. The client needs to set up confidence and trust in the architect and good communication is the key to land your dream project. We should convey the value we are bringing to the project in terms they understand. If they’re figures-oriented, talk of budget savings.

If they’re aesthetically minded, talk of beauty. If they’re rational types, talk of energy efficiency.

As architects, you’ll know there are a million variables in play when it comes to planning and constructing a building. Your clients might not. So it’s up to us to be clear and show them the way.
