Printable Preschool Homework Folder Covers

Do you include some sort of homework in your preschool program? Although we don’t believe preschoolers should be getting lengthy assignments or nightly worksheets to take home, we do think having some sort of homework can be a great parental involvement tool that both the kids and parents can enjoy.

Parents like to know how they can support their child’s learning at home, and they like to know what kinds of things kids are learning in the classroom. Plus kids love showing what they can do and sharing all they are learning with their families. This is one tool for helping them do that.

Printable Preschool Homework Calendars

In our printable preschool homework calendar set (available in our shop and on TpT ) we share a full year’s worth of activity ideas for homework that require little preparation and are fun for kids. Each week includes a math activity, a language/literacy activity, a movement activity, a “helpful” activity, and a drawing activity.

You can see an example and learn a little more about the use of the homework calendars in this homework calendar post  on Fun-A-Day.

But we know teachers are also organizers, and we like to have things nicely labeled and in order. So we knew you’d like to have a cover for these homework folders. Well you’re in luck. We’ve got some…and they’re free!

In this free printable set there are:

  • 3 Different Folder Cover Options-One that says “Homework Folder”, one that says “Take Home Folder” and one that says “Preschool Folder”
  • 7 Different Designs for Each Cover Option-one option with two children, three boy options, four girl options, and one blank option if you want to let kids design their own cover

The covers are black and white so kids can personalize them and add their own unique touch.

Tips for Using Your Homework Folders

Decide whether you will have a separate homework folder or whether you will  include homework calendars in one main take home folder. The are pros and cons to both. If you have a separate homework folder kids can add any drawings and notes to the folder and return it when it is due instead of having things in the main folder daily. However, sometimes having two folders means one might get misplaced or not get returned on the due day. Whatever you decide clearly explain the expectations to your parents and keep an extra folder or two on hand just in case.

Choose whether you will ask for the homework to be returned or not. Some teachers prefer to send homework calendars home as an option and do not ask for them to come back to school. (If you choose this option, you may not want to have separate homework folders.) Others like to have kids bring their homework back as a way to see what families have done and recognize the work the kids did at home.

If you will be requesting that the homework calendars get returned, decide whether you’ll be collecting it weekly or monthly and be sure to notify (and remind!) parents.

Make turning it in an event if you can by allowing kids to share one of their favorite homework activities. If you’re using separate homework folders, they can choose a drawing that they did. They can also describe an activity they did at home. This can lead to a lot of wonderful sharing opportunities and class discussion.

homework packets

This is another free collection of resources for teachers from The Curriculum Corner

Working on creating homework packets for your students? You’ve found the perfect place to start!

As schools are moving to e-learning, we know this is not possible for many across the country. Too many families do not have the resources to fully engage in e-learning.

For teachers in schools where technology is not available, we have heard of packets being created to send home with students.

We have just updated this collection in the fall of 2020 to add in our newest resources.

homework packet cover sheet free

While we in no way think sending home a packet of worksheets is ideal, nothing about the situation is ideal and as teachers we know to do the best we have with the circumstances we are dealt. If you must create homework packets, we wanted to give you the resources to do so.

We have worked to gather links to possible resources you can use when creating your packets.

The links below range from journal pages to math worksheets to graphic organizers.

Hopefully you will be able to find resources that will work for your students when creating your homework packets.

We have seen pictures of teachers creating pencil pouches with necessary supplies such as pencils, crayons, scissors and glue. If you have other ideas you are putting together for your students – please share your suggestions below! We know many teachers are looking for ways to help their families.

Obviously at a time like this the intent of the packets your create will not so much be learning but to keep a small sense of normalcy. Maybe students having a little exposure to academics while they are gone will also help prevent a slide backwards over the next month or so.

Click the images below to find resources to assist you in creating your homework packets:

You will find additional no prep printables focusing on word work at Cathy’s other site, Free Word Work .

If you have any free pages to share with teachers on teachers pay teachers or on your blog, please feel free to share the links in the comment section below. They must be completely free resources.

As with all of our resources, The Curriculum Corner creates these for free classroom use. Our products may not be sold. You may print and copy for your personal classroom use. These are also great for home school families!

Spring Break Homework Packet

Spring Break Homework Packet

Speaking of spring break homework packet, I can’t believe how fast this year has flown by. The first day of school seems like just yesterday. I wasn’t planning on sending homework during break, but I had a lot of parents ask me to do so during parent-teacher conferences. I didn’t want to send anything too overwhelming. I sent home skills that I noticed my kids needed extra practice on.

You can print these off as a full page or copy them as a small booklet. I chose to make them into booklets to save paper. It worked perfectly! This packet includes a cover sheet for the packet with directions for parents and students. This will keep them right on track, and they will know exactly what to do every day 🙂

Math skills included in the spring break homework packet:

  • double-digit addition with regrouping
  • double-digit subtraction with regrouping
  • Three-digit addition with regrouping
  • Three-digit subtraction with regrouping
  • word problems
  • missing addends

Math Skills homework for Spring Break

My littles are having a hard time finding text evidence. So I created these nonfiction comprehension passages. They have just the right amount of information, and they’re able to complete it on their own. My kids had so much fun completing these; they enjoyed coloring the pictures and highlighting their evidence. They loved learning about spring and spring animals.

Comprehension Passages Included:

  • All about Spring comprehension passage
  • All about Butterflies comprehension passage
  • All about Bees comprehension passage
  • All about Frogs comprehension Passage
  • All About Rabbits comprehension Passage

Homework - Weekly Homework Packet

Thinking about going to weekly homework instead of nightly? Here are some ideas from other teachers who use it that may help you!

I make a weekly homework packet that's given to the children on Monday to be returned Friday. For each of the four days, I give a language arts and math page to be completed. These can include spelling practice, phonics, grammar, etc. whatever we're working on during the week. A night's homework should take no more than fifteen or twenty minutes to complete in my district. The parents love having all week to complete the packet with their child.

I teach first grade and send home a weekly homework packet every Monday to be due back on Friday. The parents love it because it enables them to complete homework with their child when its convenient. I have a cover sheet attached which states what should be completed on each day if they desire to do it that way. :)

I send home my "homework contract" on Monday and it is due back on Friday. Students are expected to read for 15 minutes, practice spelling words for Friday's test, memorize a Bible Verse, and they have math flashcards of basic addition facts (and soon subtraction). The parents record the books read each night and initial it each night, too. This is their accountability part that they are reading the books I send home each night. Homework is only supposed to take about 30 minutes each night.

I always send handouts that I have taught by Friday or that will be taught by Monday or Tuesday, making sure that they won't need to complete those until later that week. You need to be careful about that. If it is a new spelling assignment, I model it and practice it with them on Friday of the week before.

My homework packet has a dated cover sheet with assignments listed for each day of the week, Monday through Thursday. When I speak to parents on Back to School Night, I tell them that if they are going to complete homework ahead of when its listed to be aware that the skill may not have been covered yet. You could also include homework on skills from the previous week so that doesn't happen. :)

I used to have the same problem of getting it in their folders at the last minute. With the packet, it gets done on Monday and you don't have to worry about it after that. Parents love it also. Some members of my first grade team used to do daily HW but have since switched over to the packet. They love it, too. It's worth a try, if you don't like it you can always switch back next year. :):) I think the first year I used the packet was the hardest for me. It was time consuming finding appropriate and relevant practice for the kids. Now it's much easier. I keep packets from years past in a folder and I might only have to make a few changes before copying and handing out. (Pacing and skills stay relatively the same from year to year.)

Here is what I have come up with as far as a cover sheet for my homework packet. I took one, that I believe that I found here, (I'm sorry I don't know who to give credit to) :o and I tweaked it to work for my classroom needs. What do you guys think Do you see any typos or things you'd change Thanks, because this homework packet is going to be SO NEW for me this year, but I'm excited! Thanks for all of your help (especially janicepet)

Every week I send home a list of spelling words and a home reading bag. The home reading bag has a selection of "just right" books that I expect the child to read to a family member, along with a reading log that I expect the parents to sign. At the beginning of the year I sent home a list of ways to practice spelling words and a list of ways to practice math facts. Parents and children know that we will have a spelling test every Friday, math facts tests 2-3 times per week and that I will have a book chat with each child about one of the books in their reading bag. There are no corrections or photocopies to do. I meet with children first thing in the morning to listen to them read/chat about their books, so it's an extra reading conference. For me, this systems works out great. It's quick, easy, meaningful and routine, so that everyone knows what to expect. For parents who request extra homework for their child, I give them a list of ways to respond to books and a blank journal. I tell them that I'll look at any book projects that their child does and I'll read and discuss anything that their child writes. For people who insist on math worksheets, I'll usually give them a website address with printable worksheets and invite them to print some out for their child and then to correct them together. I don't think that I'll ever do homework any other way.

This year I am sending home homework calendars. Each day has an activity that the students need to complete for that day. For example, September 3 might say, write your name 5 times, Sept. 4 might say, Draw a picture of something that starts with the letter s... This is at the kindergarten level but it could be addapted. With the calendar you can use a spiral notebook. I tell my students they need to return the work every friday.

Weekly homework works better for me. I send home a homework folder for the week on Monday. It includes spelling words, math review (I copy the Daily Math Review for M - Th), a poem to read, a reading passage with questions and a language skill. It's all review work that is reinforcing skills we are working on in the classroom - except for the spelling words which are new. Homework has to be turned in on Fridays. Parents (and students) love the weekly homework because of the flexibility with ball schedules, dance, church, etc. I do a quick check on Friday to see if it's been completed and to see if anyone is having a problem. Since I am not covering any new material and this is for reinforcement and review - I don't grade it. Works great in my classroom.

I love packets and my families have been very receptive to them. I do have them turn in spelling on Tuesday and Wednesday (3 X each in ABC order and MEANINGFUL sentences with a minimum number of words). We do a whole lot of lessons following Step Up to Writing to identify appropriate sentences. The rest of the packet is due on Fridays and a new one goes home on Friday. The packet has 2 spelling pages, and 6-8 other pages of relevant work to support class work. They also need to read for 80 mins. each week (4 X 20 mins.) and record on a log that includes a reading response and parent signature. This year I had a parent who came in religiously on Thursday afternoons to copy the packets and she returned on Friday AM to check for completion on packets, the students would then remove a few key pages that I wanted to get a close look at, the rest we would quickly correct together in a circle on the carpet with their papers in plain view. This did not even take 15 mins once a week. It held them accountable, they never knew which pages I would be collecting and their packet was checked for completion each week. I liked having the spelling due on set days so that they did not leave everything for the last minute.

FREE Summer PreK-K Pack {Updated and Expanded} | This Reading Mama

*This post contains affiliate links.

It’s the day after Memorial Day and summer is sneaking up quickly! I’ve been doing a little work to update and expand my original Summer Pre-K pack as we prepare for summer. These activities were designed with my almost 4 year old in mind, who knows most of her letters and letter sounds and loves to rhyme and count syllables, but many of the activities can be modified and adapted for tots through Kindergartners.

If you are using Reading the Alphabet , these hands-on activities are VERY similar, just with a summer theme. At the very end of this post, you can see some of the supplies we use with our packs.

Included in the pack is:

  • an emergent reader (with several options for your preschooler, early Kindergartner)
  • an early emergent reader (if younger preschoolers want to follow along and “read”, too)
  • rhyming and syllable counting activities
  • tracing and fine motor activities
  • basic math activities

BONUS!–> Most of the activities are multi-leveled. So you may use it this year with your child and then turn right around and use it next year with the same child! 🙂

Spring Break Packets For Elementary

We all know how important it is for our students to get a break from school. To relax and take their mind off of it and just enjoy being kids. Spring break is a great time to do this!

As important as the downtime is, it wouldn’t hurt for students to also get a little practice with those skills we’ve been working so hard on in class. In fact, parents are often asking for something for their children to work on while they’re out of school.

spring break packets pin image

Naturally, with any break from school, there is a degree of regression. Studies actually show that students are more likely to score lower on tests after being on break than they are during school.

Assigning light but engaging activities during spring break can be the perfect way to keep their brains active while not in school and prevent that learning regression as much as possible.

The key is to assign work that is engaging and will get your students thinking, but won’t take up too much of their time.

When I was in the classroom, I would let the students know that it’s not mandatory, but if they complete it, they will get some sort of reward or prize when they return it to school. This could be a homework pass, treat, pizza party, or something similar.

I created Spring Break Packets for each elementary grade to help make it easy for you!

These packets have a spring theme to make it fun for students. You can buy them as a bundle or individually for the grade you need! No prep required, just print these out and go!

Ocean Animal Race (Counting Game)

This is a printable dice game children can play for counting and numeral recognition practice. To play, children roll a dotted game die. The child counts the dots on the die, and circles the number they rolled. They continue rolling and circling the number until one of the ocean animals wins. Directions are printed on the game for parents.

Print and copy the grid game onto card stock paper for each child and add stickers for decoration. I use stickers of popular characters to spark their interest in the game (Barbie, Star Wars, Harry Potter, etc). Last year, when a child mentioned gifts in class, I had another child thank me for the Scooby Doo game, even though that wasn’t the end-of-year gift I had given them. You can either include dice (the Dollar Tree sells packs of them) or a home-made spinner. To play a Grid Game, children roll the die or spin the spinner and count out the correct amount of pieces to place in each grid. Play continues until the grid is full. Children practice one-to-one correspondence, numeral identification, and counting. If you prefer, you can print out ready-made grid games here  and more grid games here .

Nursery Rhyme Parent Handout

This is a sample of nursery rhymes that parents can recite with their child. At the top, it tells parents (very simply) that nursery rhymes are important for increasing reading ability.

Roll and Write Games

Include one or more Roll and Write Games. This is a fun way to encourage kids to write. If possible, include a letter dice, which you can make with a wooden cube or foam cube. In the past, I’ve found foam cubes at the Dollar Tree. I have lots of blackline printable Roll and Write Games here , and there are many themes available.

For more writing, you could even include some of these Writing Printables .

Pipe Cleaners

The pipe cleaners are included for letter and numeral formation. This is also explained in the parent letter.

Emergent Reader Books

Include one or two printable emergent reader books. You can find some for free on The Measured Mom here .

Spray-paint lima beans so that they have a different color on each side. Children use them for counting, patterning, grid games, etc. They can use them in a toss game by tossing the beans on the table and counting how many of each color. They can also be used for comparing more/less/same.

Extra Weekly Readers

If you have any leftover Weekly Readers, add these to the packet.

Winter Break Packet Ideas for Upper Elementary {Freebie Included}

Each year, I seem to go back and forth about whether or not to send a winter break packet with my students over winter break. Ultimately, I always decide to send something for a few reasons: 1.) I always have a handful of students who specifically ask for a packet and  2.) The majority of my students do not go on vacation and most don’t have things to occupy their time. Keeping these reasons in mind, I do a “no obligation” winter break packet each year and many of my students complete it.

Do you send home a winter break pack with your students? Read this post to read what I send home and grab a free fun winter break pack.

Winter Break Packet: “Fun” (and FREE!) Printables

To keep the packet engaging, I always like to mix some “fun activities” in with the academic based activities. These activities are still skill based but on a lower academic level that is less threatening for the students.  This “fun” winter break packet includes a variety of printables such as a word search, a making words printable, and a color by number multiplication practice page.

Do you send home a winter break pack with your students? Read this post to read what I send home and grab a free fun winter break pack.

This choice board printable is one of my favorites. Honestly, you could just send this one choice board home with your students. This would be perfect for teachers who are limited on copies or really don’t want to fuss with a complete packet. It has a variety of different tasks for the students to choose from so they are bound to find something engaging to work on during break. I kept the directions generic and left a blank so you could write a minimum choice requirement if you wanted to do so.

If you are interested in sending the FREE Winter Break “Fun” Packet from the first home with your students over break, click HERE to download it.

Winter Break Packet: Academic Printables

In addition to the above activities, I sometimes (depending on my students) like to include a few academic activities in the students’ winter break packet. I pull resources from my Winter-themed resources for reading and math.

I always send home at least one reading passage because the majority of my students don’t have a library of books at home and many enjoy reading the passages I send home.  The passages included in my Winter Reading  Comprehension Resource that I send home over winter break have engaging winter themed topics and a variety of genres. I also include a few text dependent printables with the passages.

Winter reading comprehension passages and activities that are perfect to send home over winter break.

If you are interested in the academic resources featured in this pack, click here or on the specific links shared above.

Do you send home a winter break packet with your students? If so, is it mostly academic or is it fun printables? Let me know in the comments. I always love hearing what other teachers do in their classroom.
