'Kaari' movie review: Much to like in this rural actioner

'Kaari' movie review: Much to like in this rural actioner

South cinema is perhaps in its most interesting phase now as makers have finally realised that the most personal stories are the most creative. Debutant Hemnath seems to believe in this school of filmmaking, as his passion to tell a raw and rustic rural tale is evident with several of his ideas in 'Kaari', but unfortunately, he holds his punches back for the most part and plays it safe by delivering us an execution that is run-of-the-mill.

If Kaari works, it’s because of the conviction in Hemanth’s writing, with the titular character being a warrior capable of sending chills down the spine of any enemy. Kaari has many heroic moments, and the opening one--for a bull that the title takes after—is nothing less than a superstar’s.

With the film and plot leaning on the final jallikattu sequence and a strong foundation already laid in the form of an invincible bull, we expect Hemanth to show us the equation it shares with Sasikumar’s Sethu, its tamer, and the latter’s journey from a jockey to a competent jallikattu player. But the director completely ignores them and introduces several new elements like unmonitored garbage dumping, the downfall of agricultural lands and of course, a corporate giant.

Though these are hiccups to the main storyline, they also turn out to be interesting. Perhaps if Kaari were a web series like Pettaikaali which also dealt with Jallikattu, these issues might have been handled as separate episodes. But within the scope of a feature film, it feels suffocating and eats up screen space when it might have served to walk us through core traditions surrounding a jallikattu event. There are mentions of 18 bull breeds and 18 descendants from selected families in the village necessary for the bull-taming competition, but they are so fleeting that we take in very few details.

In this rather rushed film, I liked the occasional moments that breathe, like the scene where the village head dresses up Sethu as a part of Urumakattudhal and explains the reason behind the tradition. I also liked how the director manages to fit in other grounded elements like the life of people who live by hunting snails. Despite having impressive performances from its lead cast, their emotions feel distant because of the lack of emphasis on such real moments.

As a hack, the director tries to draw parallels within the stories like equating Sethu’s dead horse to the bull which gets trapped in a slaughterhouse, and the kind-heartedness of his father to his girlfriend. These references also feel distant and we see the callbacks approaching us way ahead, thanks to the exposition in the form of slow-mo shots and repeated dialogues.

It is evident that effort has gone into the exchanges between the characters and they elevate the screenplay. But the idea of making every dialogue sound like a punchline and the incessant rhyme game evoke unintentional laughter. It is hard for anyone to have a straight face when a character goes, “Un ponna kanni-a vechi irundhu, vengala kinni-a vaanga pora?” in a serious scene.

I had issues with every urban character being a villain in Kaari. JD Chakravarthy’s SRK is a psychotic corporate honcho, Ramkumar Sivaji’s character is another billionaire who kills animals out of rage, and Prem, who plays Sasi’s friend, is a paedophile. Ammu Abhirami’s character is probably the only kind-hearted city-dweller in the film, but it is clearly evident that the character has been written for tokenism.

Though Sasikumar has been terribly miscast as a Chennai-paiyan who is still figuring out his moral compass, the actor sells the character earnestly and his Madras baashai is on point. The sequences set in Chennai would have been more effective if the filmmaker had rewritten the role to suit the actor’s age and image or cast someone relatively younger. The rest of the casting game is on point and the woman lead, Parvathy Arun, makes a smashing debut. She gets the most relatable role in the film and sells it effortlessly, reminding us of Parvathy Thiruvothu from her Tamil debut Poo. I really wish we had seen more of her.

D Imman is in glorious form in Kaari. His terrific background score delivers highs at the right moments and his score in the final jallikattu sequence along with Ganesh Chandrra’s outstanding cinematography is a blast on the big screens.

Debutant Hemanth’s Kaari talks about the importance of communal harmony and the resultant synergy that does miracles. But ironically, the tasteful ingredients in Kaari don’t blend well together as a wholesome dish.

REVIEW: Kaari – Completely engaging and entertaining with amazing execution despite a shaky beginning.

kaari tamil movie review imdb

The last time I experienced chills while seeing a mass hero who is not an actor, a star, or even a human on screen was when I saw the Superhero Fly in “Naan E”. I was shouting in joy and jubilation like what I would do for my favourite star. Years later, Kaari did the same thing to me every time I saw the enormous hulks in our Indian bulls when they showed on screen.

The story revolves around a variety of topics, including the dispute over a village temple, Sethu’s (Sasikumar’s) battle to uphold his father’s moral principles, his battles with corporations to keep Karuppan alive and with the government to prevent his village from becoming a district dump, as well as social issues like the slaughter of cows, village social reform, and the need to preserve water and the environment. The good news is that all of these problems seamlessly meld together to form a single narrative.

The execution is without a doubt the film’s greatest strength. The movie’s short horse race in the beginning is skillfully staged with challenging camera angles and shots, but the Jallikattu parts are just fantastic due to the bulls’ increased screen presence and the way they were choreographed. Along with the gory scenes, the director is successful in making the audience feel an emotional connection to the animals. The feelings of Paal Meena, portrayed by Parvathy Arun, with her bull Karuppan, and those of Vellachamy, played by Aadukalam Naren, with his horse Sunshine, both worked very beautifully. When the two movie heroes, Sasikumar and the bull, finally clash, one of the key protagonists, Karuppan, connects with the audience so much that the audience almost finds it difficult to decide which side to support.

kaari tamil movie review imdb

The movie did get off to a rocky start with melodramatic passages that somewhat functioned as sentimental scenes. Sethu and his father have a solid relationship, but it also has a cinematic feel to it. Although Vellachamy’s horse-mounted emotions were effective, they were not as strong as those involving the bull. Sasikumar did a passable job in his role as Sethu, a race jockey who unintentionally finds himself at his home town where more difficulties lie. He can fit into some scenarios without any trouble at all, and he can also fit into some scenes only partially. Parvathy Arun, who makes her acting debut as Paal Meena, truly impresses with her portrayal, especially in the scene where her bull goes missing. The challenging Jallikattu shots were expertly captured by Ganesh Chandhrra’s camera work, which also happens to be the best technical work in the movie and is well supported by D. Imman’s background music.

kaari tamil movie review imdb

The performances of Vallanki Nagineedu and Balaji Sakthivel stand out for their excellent work, but other characters have a very small impact on the plot. Ammu Abhirami and Redin Kingsley had zero to do with the film’s plot. Sethu’s friendship with Prem plays a significant role in why he decides to return to his village. The first-half child abuse incident is extremely disturbing and a hard hitting reality, an awareness to the audience on the hard hitting reality, but it was a bit out of the place to the script. JD Chakravarthy portrays SKR as an evil, egotistic villain who has an odd passion to eat untamed animal meat. He wants to sample the best of all the world’s living things, from cows to tigers. It was difficult to understand, and I thought it went beyond what the character actually needed to do to advance the plot.

Kaari is a technically sound rural film which is entertaining for any audience and is so much emotionally relatable for those who are aware or have been with these bulls in their villages.

Actor Sasikumar has proved his adeptness as a decorous performer in rural-based movies. He is back with yet another flick of the same domain. He plays the lead character in the film ‘Kaari’, directed by debutant Hemanth and produced by S Lakshman of Prince Pictures.

The story opens with the protagonist (Sasikumar), a horse jockey, and his father (Aadukalam Narain) working in the horse stable. A severe situation results in the demise of his father, which brings the son to his ancestral native village in Ramanathapuram. Over there, he comes across a Jallikattu Kaari bull that changes his course of life.

Director Hemanth has exerted more efforts into the research and detailing of rural native culture. So far, we have come across many movies based on Jallikattu, but this one stands out to be an exceptional one as lots of minute detailing elevates the depth of interest. However to see the same conflict of Jallikattu Vs Corporate tycoons starts sending out clichéd vibes.

Analyzing the film as the first and second half, the first hour is so engrossing as it emotionally commutes you into the premise. Be it a father-son relationship, or human-animal bonding, they are very well etched with good writing. However, the second hour turns out to be stereotypical and predictable.

Actor Sasikumar takes a cakewalk in the role, where he has already proved his success. His screen presence is charismatic and there’s no doubt about it. Be his polite romance or the ferocious action avatar, he does complete justice. Parvathi is a new talent in Kollywood. Offer her a meaty role, and she will nail it down impeccably. JD Chakravarthy is yet again wasted. Filmmakers must at least watch his magnum opus ‘Sathya’ before signing him up for mediocre characters. Aadukalam Narain is at his best. You’ll start wondering what Ammu Abhirami and Samyuktha are actually doing in this movie.

D Imman’s score of ‘Saanjikava’ is beautiful, and his background score is appreciable too. The cinematography by Ganesh Chandra deserves special mention. These days, many cinematographers are going with ‘Sepia’ as the default tone for village-based movies, but he has broken the pattern, delivering good work. The Jallikattu scenes have been extraordinarily shot.

If the commercial elements in the second half were avoided and the writing was made unique, KAARI would have been a really big show for this season.

Verdict: With an amazing first half, the film could have worked wonders if the second hour was riveting.

The Jallikattu game can only be organised by the family of a horse jockey

Kaari revolves around the rivalry between two villages in the Ramanathapuram district over the ownership of a temple.

Film- Kaari

Cast- M. Sasikumar, Parvathy Arun, JD Chakravarthy Balaji Sakthivel, Aadukalam Naren, Ammu Abhirami, Nagineedu and Redin Kingsley

Director: Hemanth

Writer: Hemanth

Producer: S Lakshman Kumar

Music Director: D Imman

Cinematographer: Ganesh Chandra

Kaari revolves around the rivalry between two villages in the Ramanathapuram district over the ownership of a temple. It is finally decided that the village that wins the Jallikattu game will exercise powers over the temple management. However, there is a twist to this ownership tussle. The Jallikattu game can only be organised by the family of a horse jockey, Sethu, who moved to Chennai years ago. What prompts Sethu to return to his village? Which group finally wins ownership of the temple? These questions form the crux of Kaari.

Director Hemanth has tried to tap into several topics in a run time of 2 hours and 22 minutes. However, he has been careful to present them in the periphery. Although Hemanth has come up with an interesting premise, the sports action drama falters in some moments due to the lack of a gripping script. The viewers may have a difficult time understanding the trajectory of the antagonist, played by actor JD Chakravarthy, in the film. In an attempt to make Chakravarthy’s character ruthless, Hemanth ended up giving it an over-dramatic take. And, it does not manage to strike a chord, leaving many fans who were excited to see the actor play the role of villain disappointed.

The entire cast of Kaari puts forth a convincing performance. Sasikumar has left no stone unturned in sinking his teeth into his character’s skin in this Hemanth directorial, and it is quite evident from his performance. The actor has navigated a string of flops before Kaari. However, this time, it seems that he may finally break the chain of failures with the box-office success of Kaari. Watch out for Parvathy Arun as she gives a stellar performance in her debut film.

Technical aspects

On the technical front, including cinematography and music, Kaari doesn’t disappoint. Ganesh Chandra’s camerawork is brilliant in this Tamil film. The Jallikattu sequences that appear in the pre-climax portion have been shot immaculately. D Imman has also done a fantastic job with the film’s music. The background score composed by him complements the scenes in Kaari well.

By Chennaivision in Tamil Movie Review November 25, 2022

Sasikumar is a jockey who works in a horse stable in Chennai. His father Aadukalam Narain is a socially responsible man and never hesitates to question the wrong doers.

Meanwhile, there is a rivalry going on between two villages near Ramanathapuram.

They decide to sort out the issue throught Jallikattu. And the village that emerges as the winner will have control over the temple which is common to both the places.

Sasikumar’s life takes a turn when when Narain dies of heart attack after his pet horse is shot dead. The audience are all introduced to corporate kingpin JD Chakravarthy.

How all of these characters are connected and what happens next forms the rest of the story.

Director Hemanth has handled a rural story without losing the nativity. Hemanth’s writing is very effective and he has also touched up on topics that are not very common.

The Jallikattu sequences that appear in the pre climax portions are realistic and interesting as well.

Kaari is a story tailor made for Sasikumar and after a long time he has got a good opportunity to showcase his acting prowess. Sasikumar has has used it perfectly and has delivered an emotional performance.

Parvathy Arun has done a good job in this story where the heroine is also given equal importance.

Balaji Sakthivel as her father has lived in that role. The songs and background score in Imman’s music are a huge support for the film. Camera work and editing adds extra strength to the film.
