What sort of funding is available to graduate students? How do I apply for funding?

All our Ph.D. students and most of our Masters students are funded either through personal scholarships, McGill scholarships, research assistantships, or teaching assistantships. The funding package offered to admitted students varies from student to student, as a function of needs and merit. The admission letter you will receive will contain a formal funding offer. To be automatically considered for such funding admission applications must be completed by December 15.

Canadian citizens and Québec residents are encouraged to apply for NSERC and FQRNT scholarships one year ahead of their expected start date. International students are encouraged to apply to similar funding programs in their home countries. Students that hold certain provincial, national and international fellowships and scholarships receive significant top-ups.

I am accepted as a student but I am currently not provided any funding, is there any funding possibility in the future?

Yes, there is still a possibility for future funding. Once at McGill, you can apply for a teaching assistantship (TA). Furthermore, supervisors might be able to offer you funding at a later time in your studies.

Where can I find more information on funding?

More information can be found on this page.

How likely is it to get a TA position and when can one apply for the same?

Most students who apply for a TA are awarded one but new students can usually only apply for a TA during their second term in the program.

Test Scores

My toefl score is just below the school of computer science minimum admission requirement. will my application be automatically refused.

There are many factors taken into consideration when reviewing applications for admission. It is however recommended to meet minimum admission requirements of a score of 100 in TOEFL (internet based test) with at least 20 in individual sections. For more details refer to this page.

What is the minimum IELTS score expected for admission?

A band score of 6.5 or greater (Academic module) is required. For more details refer to this page.

If the language of instruction at my University was in English, do I need to write the TOEFL?

If you completed a degree (Bachelor or Master's) where the language of instruction was English, you are not required to provide proof of English competency in the form of TOEFL or IELTS. You are required to provide official proof (either stated on your transcript or in a separate letter from the University) that the language of instruction for your degree was English.

How are the test scores reported?

Test scores must be sent electronically directly from the testing agency to institution code #0935.

Why have I been waived off the English Proficiency Tests?

You have been waived from the TOEFL/IELTS test because you have studied at an English university. If you like you may still submit your TOEFL/IELTS test results to McGill.

Supporting Documents

What should i include in my personal statement.

M.Sc. thesis and PhD applicants: The personal statement should describe your research interests, experience, and achievements, and mention which professors you are interested in working with. You can optionally briefly describe proposed research directions as well as any special circumstances. It should not exceed one page.

M.Sc. Non-thesis applicants: The personal statement should state why you are interested in this particular program and how it aligns with your career goals. It should also describe projects you have worked on in the past and any other achievements, and inform about your teamwork and leadership skills. You can also indicate any special circumstances. The statement also helps us assess your writing skills. It should not exceed one page. Details about what to include in the personal statement can be found here.

Degree equivalency

How do i convert my percentage grades to a cgpa on a scale out of 4.0.

Information can be found on the Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies Office International Degree Equivalencies webpage , where you may also look up degree equivalence for your country.

Eligibility for applying

Can i still apply if i don't meet minimum admission requirements.

Applicants should meet minimum requirements. The admissions process is very competitive and if your application does not meet the minimum requirements then it will likely be refused. Note that all your documents are important for your application to be considered.

I don't have a CS background. Can I still apply?

For the M.Sc. programs you will find a list of courses whose material is a prerequisite to be admitted to our programs. See details here. Sometime students from similar backgrounds such as Electrical and Computer Engineering or students with a Minor in Computer Science have already taken equivalent courses and have sufficient background to apply directly. If you do not have the minimum admission requirements, we cannot encourage you to apply to our programs.

Application Status

The status of my application is "submitted". when will i receive an answer.

Most applications will stay in the "submitted" status until a decision is made. This can take up to one month before an update.

How can I inquire about my current application?

For inquiries concerning your application please use the communication tool through the application portal. Please do not send separate emails as it only delays the processing time.

What do I do if I have technical problems with my application, such as in uploading documents or logging in?

Please use the communication tool or contact your program coordinator by email here.

For more FAQs please visit the GPS site.

Questions related to Master Programs (Thesis /Non-Thesis)

Can i apply for more than one program, can i transfer from one program to another or from one university to another.

Once you have started your studies you might be able to switch between the thesis and non-thesis programs under special circumstances only.

If you have already partially completed a graduate program in Computer Science at a different university or a similar program within McGill (e.g., in ECE), and you transfer to one of our Master’s program, we can transfer a maximum of 2 courses.

Supervisor information

Is it mandatory to find a supervisor before applying for admission.

PhD program: All our applicants to our PhD program must list at least 3 proposed supervisors they want to work with on their application. Your application file will be appropriately forwarded once complete. Students are also encouraged to contact potential supervisors directly to discuss specific opportunities. Advice on contacting potential supervisors can be found here.

M.Sc. Thesis program: It is not required for the application but most of our students will have a supervisor at the time of admission. Either you have already been in contact with potential supervisors before or shortly after applying, or interested professors will contact you when seeing your application. If you do not have a supervisor at the start of your studies, you will be given one year to find a supervisor.

M.Sc. Non-thesis program: You will not need a supervisor at the start of your program. In the semester before you do your M.Sc. project (if applicable) you will have to find a supervisor.

How does one find a supervisor?

PhD and M.Sc. Thesis programs: Advice on contacting potential supervisors (shortly before or after you have submitted your application) can be found here. Please check the webpages of professors carefully before sending any emails. Several professors get many requests and might have specific guidelines regarding being contacted by potential students.

M.Sc. Non-thesis program: Students choosing the Research Project option will seek a supervisor before the end of the second term for their M.Sc. project to permit a project during the summer. Taking courses with potential supervisors will facilitate the search.

Will I be able to do work in machine learning with a professor of my choice?

If you are hoping to work with a specific professor in machine learning, note that many have limited capacity to take on new students. Nevertheless, there are opportunities for applying machine learning techniques in many areas (either as thesis or project).

For any specific questions, see contact information here.

Here's what's required to graduate high school in Brevard County

Here's how brevard's requirements to graduate with a standard high school diploma differ from the state's requirements..

phd mcgill requirements

In just under a week, Taeshaun Mallard will don a cap and gown and cross the stage at McLarty Stadium in Rockledge.

The senior at Rockledge High School is just one of about 5,000 Brevard Public Schools students preparing to graduate over the course of the next week .

"A lot of people did not make it through, and I worked hard to make sure I could," Mallard said.

It wasn't easy. Over the course of four years, Mallard worked to earn 26 credits and passed numerous tests. Those are the typical requirements for a standard diploma at Brevard Public Schools, according to the district's website. Students can also earn this type of diploma by completing an 18-credit Academically Challenging Curriculum to Enhance Learning option, a Career and Technical Education (CTE) Pathway, and Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE) curriculum or an International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum.

"The only thing I was surprised about was having to pass a test to graduate," Mallard said, referring to the requirement that students must pass Florida's FAST test or an equivalent test, like the SAT, ACT or CLT. "Some kids are not good test takers, and if you do not pass the test, you do not get your diploma."

Brevard's graduation rate was also slightly higher than the overall rate for the state during the 2022-2023 school year, with Brevard achieving a rate of 89.7% while Florida had a rate of 88.0%, according to the state department of education.

Graduation dates throughout Brevard: School won't let out until Memorial Day weekend in Brevard, but graduations start mid May

Graduation requirements shared by the state and district

Brevard's requirements for a diploma are slightly different than the state's — while Florida requires 24 credits for a standard diploma, Brevard requires 26, with Titusville High requiring 30 due to the way the students' schedules work.

Most of the credits students must complete in Brevard to receive a standard diploma align with what the state requires.

Students must complete four credits in English Language Arts (ELA), four credits in math that must include Algebra 1 and Geometry and four credits in either science or social studies. They also have to complete end-of-course evaluations for Algebra 1, Biology and U.S. History, as well as a statewide standardized 10th grade ELA assessment.

They're also required to take a course in fine and performing arts, speech and debate or career and technical education; physical education; and personal financial literacy.

Other credits

As part of the 24 credits necessary for a standard high school diploma, the state requires 7.5 elective credits, but doesn't specify what these must be in. On Brevard's requirements, however, they list several specific courses with explanations as to why a student must take them.

In Brevard, students must take two courses of the same language, a career research and decision making course, 8.5 credits in electives and three credit hours of dual enrollment courses, AP courses, IB courses, AICE courses, Honors courses, or several credits in a CTE program.

Teacher pay: Florida teachers make about $16,450 less than national average — and Brevard's gap is bigger

What about other types of diplomas?

Brevard Public Schools also offers a scholar diploma, industry scholar diploma and the Florida Seal of Biliteracy diploma. For all of these diploma designations, students must complete all the same requirements as the standard diploma as well as additional work.

The scholar diploma is largely based on additional academic course work, while the industry scholar diploma is based on a student attaining one or more industry certifications. The Florida Seal of Biliteracy diploma is based on a student demonstrating "competency in listening, speaking, reading and writing in one or more worldlanguages in addition to English," according to BPS.

Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics

  • Degree Programs

6.0. Doctor of Philosophy Degree Program

The doctoral program in Agricultural and Applied Economics is designed to develop a broad based competence in economic theory and in techniques of quantitative analysis. Dissertation research of students in our department usually addresses applied problems using contemporary economic theory and analytical methods. Students completing our program have demonstrated a high degree of success in academics, business, and government.

Two options are offered for the Doctor of Philosophy in the Agricultural and Applied Economics program. The first option does not require a minor. The second option includes a minor in Family Financial Planning—a joint Ph.D. program between the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics and the College of Human Sciences. Completion of the Doctoral program in Agricultural and Applied Economics with a minor in Family Financial Planning qualifies graduates to take an exam administered by the Certified Financial Planning Board of Standards to become Certified Financial Planners.

6.1. Prerequisites

Most students will have completed the requirements for an M.S. degree or its equivalent before admission to the doctoral program. If the Master's degree does not meet the prerequisite requirements for entering our Master of Science program (see Section 5.1) then those requirements must be met in order to enter the Ph.D. program. Some exceptional students will be offered the opportunity to pursue a Ph.D. directly from a Bachelor's program. In this case, see the Graduate Coordinator for course and program requirements.

Background in algebra, partial and total differentiation, integration and basic matrix or linear algebra operations are very useful to perform well in coursework and research work.

6.2. Credit Hour Requirements

The doctoral program requires a minimum of 60 credit hours of course work beyond the baccalaureate degree and at least 12 credit hours of dissertation research (AAEC 8000).

6.3. Transfer of Credit

Transfer of graduate credit from other academic institutions may be allowed. The request for transfer must be initiated by the student and supported by the student's committee chair. Transfer decisions are made by the department Graduate Coordinator and must be approved by the Graduate School . Information required in support of transfer requests includes academic transcripts and course catalogue descriptions of each course proposed for transfer. Course syllabi may also be requested to support transfer decisions.

6.4. Substitution for Core Courses

Substitutions for core courses are allowed only under unusual circumstances. Requests for substitutions for core courses must be initiated by the student and his or her committee chair, to the department Graduate Coordinator and must be approved by the Graduate School . Final decisions on substitutions for core courses taught outside our department are made by the department Graduate Coordinator . Decisions on core courses taught in the department are made by the current instructor of the core course being replaced.

6.5. Ph.D. Comprehensive Examination

The purpose of the Ph.D. comprehensive examination is to test the student's ability to integrate knowledge from various subject matter areas and apply appropriate concepts and tools to issues and problems relevant to the discipline. The comprehensive exam is administered by a departmental committee twice each year (usually in May and August) and is normally taken at the end of the first full year of coursework. The exam has two parts which are taken separately. Part 1 of the exam focuses econometric methods and Part 2 covers microeconomic theory. Students have two opportunities to pass both parts of the exam. If both parts of the exam are passed on the first attempt then the student has successfully completed this degree requirement. If one or both parts of the exam are failed on the first attempt (usually in May), the student must retake the failed part(s) at the next offering (in the following August). A second failure of either part of the comprehensive exam will result in dismissal from the student's Ph.D. program.

6.6. Qualifying Examination and Admission to Candidacy

Graduate school rules require that all doctoral students successfully complete a Qualifying Examination for admission to candidacy for the doctor's degree. In the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics the Dissertation Proposal Defense serves as the Qualifying Exam. Students are allowed two attempts to satisfactorily complete this examination. Failure to satisfactorily complete the examination on a second attempt will result in dismissal from the Ph.D. program. Further information on the Dissertation Proposal and Proposal Defense is provided in Section 9.0 of this Handbook.

6.7. Final Examination

All doctoral candidates are required to pass a public final oral examination which is usually over the general field of the dissertation. Candidates should consult the Graduate School for details regarding scheduling of the final examination. After the final examination, the professor conducting comprehensive exams will send a written notification of the results to the Graduate Secretary for the student's graduate file.

Doctoral candidates, with their major advisor, are required to find their own Dean's Representative for the Graduate School for their defense, preferably someone outside of the department.

Public announcement of exams will be done through the department Graduate Secretary. Exams must be announced at least four weeks prior to the exam date, without exception.

6.9. Degree Program Course Requirements

Listed below are the course requirements for the Ph.D. program options. Courses listed specifically by number are core courses. Note that the option II course requirements have been revised in consultation with the Department of Personal Financial Planning.
