6.734 metres above sea level – no car has ever gone higher. On 2 December, racing driver Romain Dumas set a new world record at the peak of the west ridge of the Ojos del Salado volcano in Chile, piloting a significantly modified Porsche 911 running on eFuels. Two-time world rally champion Walter Röhrl has been under contract with Porsche since 1993, initially as a test and development driver and now as a brand ambassador. The new Porsche 911 GT3 RS has completed the 20.8-kilometre Nordschleife of the Nürburgring in 6:49.328 minutes – 10.6 seconds faster than the current 911 GT3. Behind the wheel was Porsche brand ambassador Jörg Bergmeister, who was in-tensely involved in the development of the new flagship of the 911 series. An official was present to witness the lap time.

The 2023 Porsche 911 GT3 RS made its first in-person appearance today at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, only two days after its digital world premiere. The show car – customized by the GT Model Line and Style Porsche – is a tribute to the 1972 911 Carrera RS 2.7.

At Porsche Club of America (PCA) a daring plan is hatched in 2019. They want to create a one-off that is like no other. Together with Porsche Classic they band together to form a transatlantic secret project and construct, on the basis of the 911, type 996, the 911 Classic Club Coupe in the PCA design. It is the birth of something absolutely unique – in the most sporty design ever of a type 996.

Porsche 911 S/T 2024 : le modèle anniversaire, celui des puristes

Lamezia Terme, Italie – Après le démarrage et le réchauffement du moteur flat-six atmosphérique, je donne quelques coups d’accélérateur au neutre. L’aiguille du tachymètre monte rapidement et, surtout, descend presque aussi vite, comme dans une authentique voiture de course. Parce que cette nouvelle Porsche 911 S/T est dotée d’un volant moteur monomasse et d’un embrayage allégé. Cet ensemble est délesté de 10,5 kg par rapport à celui de la boîte de vitesses manuelle de la GT3, et c’est la raison pour laquelle le moteur répond instantanément à la commande des gaz et que les révolutions baissent pomptement, l’inertie étant considérablement réduite puisqu'il y a moins de masse en rotation.

Pas de doute possible, dans le cas de cette S/T les ingénieurs de Porsche ont développé une obsession compulsive pour la réduction du poids de presque tous les composants. Résultat? La 911 S/T s’avère la variante la plus légère de la gamme actuelle des 911 Carrera, avec un poids inférieur à 1 380 kilos, soit environ 40 kilos de moins qu’une GT3 Touring.

Conçue afin de commémorer le soixantième anniversaire de la 911 née en 1963, la 911 S/T ne sera produite qu’à « 1963 » exemplaires. L’appellation S/T remonte à 1969, année à partir de laquelle Porsche proposait une version spéciale compétition de la 911 S, version désignée comme ST à l’interne. La nouvelle 911 S/T est essentiellement un croisement entre la carrosserie de la GT3 Touring et la mécanique d’une GT3 RS, exception faite de la boîte de vitesses car la S/T est exclusivement dotée d’une boîte manuelle classique, chose qui est de plus en plus rare aujourd’hui.

Lancée à l’assaut des routes en lacets du littoral de Lamezia Terme, au niveau de la mer Méditerranée, jusqu’au parc national localisé près du Lac Ampollino à près de 1 500 mètres d’altitude, la 911 S/T est une véritable bête au cœur rageur. Cet itinéraire exigeant une concentration soutenue, la voiture répond à la moindre sollicitation tout en composant admirablement bien avec le revêtement dégradé par endroits.

Étroites et taillées dans la forêt, ces routes nous ont vu rouler principalement en deuxième et troisième vitesse, parfois en quatrième, avec un moteur flirtant avec sa zone rouge de 9 000 tr/min comme seule trame sonore. À ce sujet, précisons que la S/T est équipée d’un échappement sport allégé réalisé en acier inoxydable, et non d’un échappement avec clapets actifs permettant de tempérer ou d’augmenter le niveau sonore, et c’est pourquoi elle s’exprime de façon aussi rageuse en permanence.

La boîte manuelle est à démultiplication courte, avec un étagement plus serré (de 8%) des six rapports que sur la GT3. La course du levier est aussi réduite, puisqu’il ne mesure que cinq centimètres, est c’est une véritable joie que l’on éprouve à chaque changement de vitesse. Le rétrogradage est particulièrement satisfaisant, le moteur répondant immédiatement au coup d’accélérateur lors du talon-pointe. Il faut juste s’assurer de déplacer le levier sur le rapport inférieur et de relâcher l’embrayage immédiatement, puisque les tours/minute chutent vite en raison de la faible inertie de l’embrayage allégé et du volant moteur monomasse.

Porsche ne s’attend pas à ce que tous les acheteurs soient capables d’exécuter parfaitement le talon-pointe, et c’est pourquoi un système automatique peut augmenter le régime du moteur lors du rétrogradage. Ce système n’est pas actif par défaut, il faut l’activer au moyen des sous-menus du système multimédia. Bref, la 911 S/T tient pour acquis que vous êtes un conducteur chevronné, mais elle fera le boulot pour vous si vous lui demandez un peu d'aide.

Pas de direction active

Par rapport à la GT3, la direction de la S/T est un brin plus lente ce qui la rend moins nerveuse au centre et convient mieux à la vocation de cette variante conçue pour assurer une dynamique de premier plan sur les routes balisées. Aussi, la S/T n’est pas équipée d’une direction active aux roues arrière, délaissée afin de réduire le poids. Qu’à cela ne tienne, l’agilité de la S/T n’a jamais fait défaut, même dans les virages en épingle, les systèmes PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management) et PSM (Porsche Stability Management) faisant l’objet d’une calibration spécifique à la S/T.

Les liaisons au sol sont assurées par une suspension avant à doubles leviers triangulés, dont les points d’attache sont des joints de rotule en métal de type uniball. Ce système est aussi utilisé pour les points d’attache des triangles inférieurs de la suspension LSA à cinq bras à l’arrière. Les amortisseurs de la S/T adoptent une calibration spécifique. Le résultat, c’est que la 911 S/T fait preuve d’une précision remarquable, que ce soit au freinage où la plongée vers l’avant est considérablement réduite. Puisqu’il est question de freinage, précisons que la S/T est équipée de série du système PCCB (Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake) avec disques de 410 mm à l’avant et de 390 mm à l’arrière.

Impasse sur l’aéro

Contrairement à la GT3RS et son aérodynamique très évoluée ou même la GT3, la 911 S/T fait presque l’impasse sur les éléments aérodynamiques, avec l’exception notable de son aileron arrière doté d’un Gurney Flap afin d’assurer la stabilité à haute vitesse. À ce sujet, on note que l’aileron de la 911 S/T se déploie à 120 km/h, plutôt qu’à 80, histoire de préserver le style classique de la 911 le plus longtemps possible. Pour réduire la masse, le capot, le toit et les ailes de la 911 S/T sont en plastique renforcé de fibre de carbone. On remarque également les jantes en magnésium avec écrou central, lesquelles permettent de retrancher une dizaine de kilos au poids non suspendu et sont chaussées d’une monte pneumatique mixte à hautes performances (255/35 ZR 20 à l’avant, 315/30 ZR 21 à l’arrière).

L’ensemble optionnel Heritage Design comprend une peinture de couleur Shoreline Blue et des jantes de couleur Ceramica, l’acheteur pouvant aussi choisir de décorer la carrosserie d’un ensemble de films décoratifs ainsi que d’un numéro de course allant de 0 à 99. Parions que le chiffre 63 sera très populaire…

L’habitacle des modèles dotés de cet ensemble se distingue par des bandes centrales en tissu de couleur cognac avec lignes noires, ces deux teintes se retrouvant aussi dans l’équipement en cuir semi-aniline. La 911 S/T est livrable de série avec des sièges baquets en carbone, mais il est possible d’obtenir sans frais des sièges sport ajustables en quatre positions. Le combiné d’instruments ainsi que le chronomètre de l’ensemble Sport Chrono se singularisent par un colori vert rappelant celui de la première 911 en 1963.

Un modèle à part

Des moments d’anthologie, rien de moins. Voilà ce que la nouvelle Porsche 911 S/T nous a fait vivre lors de notre premier contact avec cette récente version de la 911 Carrera sur les routes du sud-ouest de l’Italie. À cette occasion, la direction canadienne de la marque n’était pas en mesure de préciser combien de ces unités seront allouées au marché canadien. On sait cependant que le prix de départ est de 343 900 $, et que l’ensemble Heritage Design réclame un supplément de 23 200 $. Rassurez-vous, Porsche Canada vous offre une montre « Chronograph 1 – 911 S/T » d’une valeur de 18 000 $ en prime à l’achat d’une 911 S/T! Tout cela fait en sorte que la S/T coûte environ 100 000 $ de plus qu’une GT3 Touring dont la production n’est pas limitée, alors que la S/T, rappelons-le, ne sera produite qu’à 1963 exemplaires.

Il va de soi que la rareté de la 911 S/T assurera certainement une augmentation de sa valeur au fil des années, ce qui en fait un achat avisé pour les rares clients qui auront la chance d’en acquérir une. La 911 S/T a été conçue pour procurer plein de sensations à son conducteur. Mais il est probable que bon nombre de ces voitures restent cantonnées dans un garage…les propriétaires ne voulant pas faire grimper le kilométrage afin de préserver la valeur de leur investissement.

La huitième génération de la Porsche 911 a été dévoilée au salon de l’automobile de Los Angeles. Des nouveautés esthétiques, techniques et numériques caractérisent le modèle. La nouvelle silhouette est qualifiée de plus "athlétique" par la marque. 

Une nouvelle boite à double embrayage à huit rapports a été installée et le modèle de la voiture dispose d'un six cylindre à plat installé à l'arrière. "Les versions S délivrent 450 chevaux", indique le communiqué de la marque publié le 28 novembre. "L’optimisation du système d’injection d’essence et la nouvelle configuration des turbocompresseurs et du système de refroidissement de l’air de suralimentation améliorent le rendement du moteur", ajoute Porsche.

Une Porsche connectée

La nouvelle 911 prend le tournant du numérique avec un réglage de châssis intelligent et une assistance de conduite moderne. Un écran tactile de 10,9 pouces (27,7 cm) permet de contrôler les nouvelles fonctions. Parmi elles, le Porsche Wet Mode permet d’améliorer la sécurité sur une route humide en détectant l’état de la chaussée. "Les systèmes de gestion de la stabilité et de la motricité sont reconditionnés pour pouvoir intervenir rapidement en cas d’activation", détaille Porsche. Une caméra est reliée à des systèmes d’assistance anticollision et d’assistance au freinage. En option : une assistance à vision nocturne basée sur des caméras thermiques est aussi proposé.

Trois applications ont aussi été développées autour de la voiture : Porsche Road Trip, conseille sur l’itinéraire choisi, Porsche 360+, est un assistant personnel numérique, et Porsche Impact permet de calculer les émissions de CO2 réalisées durant sa conduite.

Sur le marché français, la 911 Carrera S est proposée à partir de 122 255 euros et la 911 Carrera 4S à partir de 130 175 euros.
