Fearless Fulbrights: Dr. Matthew Thomann

Dr. Matthew Thomann traveled to Kenya in 2022 to the University of Nairobi to examine sexuality and the politics of health in sub-Saharan Africa and the United States.

Matthew Thomann (right), an assistant professor of anthropology, and research assistant John Maina (left) stand outside the recovery center in Nairobi, Kenya.

1. What is your field of interest, and can you explain your Fulbright project?

I am a cultural and critical medical anthropologist. My research examines sexuality and the politics of health in sub-Saharan Africa and the United States, crossing subfields of medical anthropology, global health, and queer anthropology. Between January and August of 2022, with the support of a U.S. Fulbright Scholar award (African Regional Research Program), I conducted ethnographic research documenting the landscape of care available to sexual and gender minorities living with advanced cases of anogenital warts caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) in Nairobi, Kenya.

In the Kenyan context, the association between receptive anal sex and the clinical presentation of anal warts leads members of this community to avoid health facilities, fearing homophobic retaliation from health providers. This delayed clinical presentation, combined with high rates of undiagnosed and/or uncontrolled HIV infection, has resulted in a regionally localized pattern of severely advanced, often obstructive cases of HPV-related anal warts requiring surgical intervention.

My work highlights patient’s therapeutic trajectories–their narratives of treatment encounters, suffering, and the affective impact of this condition on their livelihoods, vital social networks, and forms of sexual intimacy. In addition to generating anthropological knowledge and developing an evidence base that community leaders can use to bolster their efforts to confront this emerging health crisis, this work responds to the global health alarm over emerging cancer epidemics in African contexts hardest hit by the HIV epidemic.

2. What was the most rewarding aspect of being a Fulbright Scholar?

A large part of my Fulbright research involved conducting participant observation in a home-based care center, where patients spent a week recovering from what was often an invasive medical procedure. Despite the trauma and pain they experienced living with such a stigmatized condition and undergoing the procedure, in the space of the recovery center it produced forms of relationality, humanity, and healing between patients and caregivers. As a queer researcher committed to working in solidarity towards health justice and equity alongside queer communities, it was deeply meaningful to find myself intertwined in those webs of relationality, humanity, and healing.

3. What inspired you to start this process of becoming a Fulbright Scholar? Have you always been interested in international research?

While I regularly conduct research in collaboration with communities in the United States, I maintain an active international research agenda. My dissertation research in Côte d’Ivoire focused on HIV vulnerability and community-led responses within donor-funded programming. In 2011, after spending months preparing my application materials for a Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad award, the program was suspended due to the insecurity caused by contested 2010 elections. Nearly a decade later, the Fulbright was an ideal funding mechanism for this new project on HPV in Kenya.

4. What was the most surprising thing you discovered during your Fulbright experience?

I’m queer and an anthropologist – it’s pretty difficult to surprise a queer anthropologist.

5. How have you carried forward your experience overseas now that you've returned home?

Since leaving Nairobi in August of 2022, I have returned for two shorter research trips and am in the process of writing up research findings for publication. Most recently, I received funding from the Office of the Provost and Vice President for Research to support dissemination activities in Nairobi this summer (2024). I am also exploring funding opportunities to support further data collection to understand the potential future burden of HPV-related anal cancer, which is vital to ongoing community-led advocacy for inclusion in national HPV prevention and treatment programming.

6. How and why did you choose your partner institution?

My partner institution was the University of Nairobi, and more specifically the Institute of Anthropology, Gender, and African Studies. The university had already hosted a few Fulbright scholars, including anthropologists who had affiliated with the institute.

7. For other Terps that are interested in becoming Fulbright Scholars in the future, what advice do you have for them?

Start early! I think it’s particularly important to reach out to academic units you’re hoping to partner with as soon as possible. While many university faculty/staff will be open – and even excited – about the opportunity to host a Fulbright scholar, there are many factors they may need to consider. Reaching out well in advance signals to the potential host institution and the humans working inside it that you’re collegial and considerate.

As part of the “Education Tuesday” series during March and April, the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community Health and Human Services Prevention and Intervention Department hosted a “Sexual Violence in Indian Country” webinar on Tuesday, April 16.

Memory Dawn Long Chase served as the guest speaker during the presentation, with SRPMIC HHS Health Educator Vurlene Notsinneh-Bowekaty serving as the host. A member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, Long Chase is a domestic violence response director for SWIWC, formerly known as the Southwest Indigenous Women’s Coalition.

During the presentation, the more than 65 attendees were informed about the significant extent of sexual violence in Indian Country. “Sex trafficking from colonial times is technically still going on today,” said Long Chase. She mentioned that the objectification of Indigenous women by reducing them to hypersexual caricatures and cartoonish imagery is part of sexual violence.

The hefty discussion warranted many check-ins within the webinar group to ensure all attendees were not triggered or severely affected by the presentation.

“Pocahontas was not her name; it was a nickname,” said Long Chase. “Disney inaccurately portrayed her life. She was the first ever MMIP (Missing/Murdered Indigenous Person). John Smith was not a good dude. I don’t think there was a grand love story there.”

Later, the presentation featured a video segment by NBC Left Field about sexual violence on the Tohono O’odham Nation. Caroline Antone was profiled in the video and detailed the sexual, physical, mental and spiritual abuse she experienced at home on the reservation when she was 5 years old. The frustration that she felt toward her parents for allowing the abuse to occur resulted in Antone spiraling out of control in her own life. “When I asked my parents why they allowed the abuse to happen to me, they just kept quiet,” said Antone in the video.

Staying silent and not reporting sexual abuse is another form of allowing the trauma to thrive.

“If you are Native, you are a survivor of something,” said Long Chase. She added, “There weren’t any programs for our ancestors. So, their way [to handle the situation] was to shrink and to make themselves invisible by not talking about it.”

As the presentation neared its end, Long Chase educated the group on residential schools and their negative impact in Indian Country. “I ask non-Native folks all the time to ask their parents and grandparents if their schools had graveyards,” Long Chase stated. She had the same opinion about the foster care system. “I call foster care programs ‘residential schools 2.0’ because there is rampant sexual violence in foster care,” she said.

Long Chase ended the presentation by answering questions from the group and describing the many different organizations and resources that can offer help to victims of sexual violence. “Our ancestors experienced sexual violence, and we still experience forms of it,” she said. “Telling your story is healing.”

Brain-chip patient plays online chess - Neuralink

Elon Musk's brain-chip company Neuralink has shown its first patient moving a cursor on a computer using an implanted device.

In a nine-minute livestream on X , formerly Twitter, Noland Arbaugh uses the cursor to play chess online.

Mr Arbaugh was paralysed below the shoulders after a diving accident and received the chip implant in January .

The company's goal is to connect human brains to computers to help tackle complex neurological conditions.

"The surgery was super easy," Mr Arbaugh said during the presentation.

Mr Arbaugh also said that he had used the brain implant to play the video game Civilization VI. Neuralink gave him "the ability to do that again and played for eight hours straight", he said.

However, Mr Arbaugh said the new technology was not perfect and they "have run into some issues".

Neuralink's device, which is about the size of a one pound coin, is inserted into the skull, with microscopic wires which can read neuron activity and beam back a wireless signal to a receiving unit.

The company has also run trials in pigs and claimed that monkeys can play a basic version of the video game Pong.

Neuralink was given permission to test the chip on humans by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in May 2023.

Neuralink is one of a growing number of companies and university departments attempting to refine and ultimately commercialise this technology.

For example, the École Polytechnique Fédérale in Lausanne in Switzerland has successfully enabled Gert-Jan Oskam, who is paralysed, to walk just by thinking about the movements involved.

That was achieved by putting electronic implants on Mr Oskam's brain and spine, which wirelessly communicate thoughts to his legs and feet.

Details of the breakthrough were published in the peer-reviewed journal Nature last year.

The human brain is home to around 86 billion neurons, nerve cells connected to one another by synapses.

Every time we want to move, feel or think, a tiny electrical impulse is generated and sent incredibly quickly from one neuron to another.

Scientists have developed devices which can detect some of those signals - either using a non-invasive cap placed on the head or wires implanted into the brain itself.

The technology - known as a brain-computer interface (BCI) - is where many millions of dollars of research funding appears to be heading at the moment.
