I booked this movie only based on the trust on Vijay Antony. My wife said the movie has only 2.5 stars. Still I went ahead and I am glad I did that. My wife and I thoroughly experienced the suspense and the thrill in the movie. And a lot of education on what could be happening in our state and maybe even the country. <br/>The final credits song is outstanding and the lyricist and musician have poured their soul into it. The ending of the song although feels incomplete. Could be that the song wasn’t produced fully due to the personal situation of Vijay Antony

'Raththam' movie review: This journo procedural has its moments
It’s not exactly a new trope—this idea of a former specialist returning to show who’s boss. What’s interesting about Raththam isn’t this trope but the field the protagonist, Ranjith Kumar (Vijay Antony) operates. Typically, this former-specialist-returns-to-rock idea has been utilised to generate mass moments in the action territory. He’s not a coward; he’s, in fact, the most violent of them all! In Raththam, however, Ranjith’s heroism is his ability to practise efficient investigative journalism. This isn’t just about Ranjith’s keen eye for detail and his ability to form unusual patterns; this is also about his willingness to apologise when the work isn’t good enough. And that’s perhaps why that cursory action sequence we get—to signal his comeback—doesn’t quite feel like it belongs in this film or is able to generate enough pleasure. Ranjith’s punches land better in print.
The film begins by showing Ranjith as a depressed drunk. There’s a fair amount of ungainly exposition in these areas: when his former boss/father-like figure (Nizhalgal Ravi) meets him for the first time, he ensures through dialogue that we learn that Ranjith is “India’s best investigative journalist”. Or in a scene that follows, a woman, in talking about her kid, says, “Ungalukku dhaan dyslexia nu theriyume” and in talking about herself, says, “Naan divorce-aana single parent-nu therinjum…” Yet, the same film is admirably economical in certain other spaces—like Sangeetha (Mahima Nambiar) offering sarcastic comments about her flashback or allowing us to get a brief hint of some demons in her past in a passing conversation with a co-worker. I also liked how the film glides past some initial resistance from a protégé journalist (Nandita Swetha).
In this film that is urgent on paper but doesn’t feel as urgent on the screen, I sat up each time the focus shifted to Sangeetha’s character. Even if we don’t exactly understand the dynamics of her arrangements, this still feels like a new personality in our cinema. While the music—like the film for me—was on and off (the percussion bit to signal investigation felt simplistic and overdone), I enjoyed the waltz bits that come along to join Sangeetha. I wanted to learn more about her, about her ability to wield control, even if not her motivations—and that’s a compliment, I suppose, to the interest the film is able to create about her. Above all, I’m glad she, a single mother, isn’t pushed into becoming a mother figure for Ranjith’s daughter. Director CS Amudhan must surely have had a laugh or two about rewriting conventional rules when writing this woman, the way he did.
For Raththam to be more effective, it needed more emotional strength. The Ranjith-Chezhiyan friendship needed to register more strongly so that the cool visual idea of a magazine left on a tombstone worked on an emotional level as well. The almost paternal relationship he has with his mentor (Nizhalgal Ravi) needed to create more warmth. The fleeting visuals of him crying with Ranjith don’t do enough, and when he comes to recruit Ranjith, it feels almost opportunistic. As for Ranjith himself, I’m not sure the catharsis of his transformation into a fully functional journalist comes through as it should. In theory, you can see that he is lured into journalism one step at a time, almost like a recovering alcoholic being lured into addiction through one sip at a time. In fact, I enjoyed how Sangeetha rubbishes his transformation by pointing out this too is an addiction. It adds an interesting layer of narcissism to Ranjith’s character, even if a lot of these layers don’t necessarily have a visceral effect.
It’s a film that’s refreshing in its presentation of journalism and its faith in the transformative powers of good journalism. You see this in obvious ways and in simpler ways, like when two policemen are about to come to a compromise but then, the media lands there and makes it impossible. So, yes, it’s a film that rings quite relevant in its advocacy of conscientious journalism. Also relevant is its commentary of the social media age when everyone’s life is out in the open for everyone to see and like and share and… as Raththam suggests, exploit if needed. Without giving away too much, perhaps I can just comment that the film’s cinematic events are just a small exaggeration of the many ways in which prejudices and a lack of self-worth can be easily… influenced.
It’s a film that has the recipe to fill up the air with tension, but I’m not sure that happens consistently in this procedural. I don’t believe I truly worried for Ranjith or thought he might ever be in real trouble. While the script pushes him into some tight corners as far as his investigation is concerned, the feeling that he’s a simple move away from winning doesn’t ever leave you. Perhaps it has something to do with how unflustered Vijay Antony looks; perhaps it’s a function of his stoic face, which in the best scenes allows you to see that there’s more than he lets up, but in the more sedate scenes, leaves you wishing he would let go and channel some real frustration and anger.
Ultimately, the film’s value is in the topics it takes on and its view of them. Ranjith, as a man who beats up rogues ‘singlehandedly’ or as a fearless man who rides horses into walls, is wholly forgettable. On the other hand Ranjith, as a-bit-of-a-selfish man who sees patterns where others can’t, isn’t so forgettable. The film ultimately makes the point that you don’t need to be noble to cause positive change; in fields like journalism, just doing your job well is good enough.

Raththam review: A worthy investigative thriller from Vijay Antony
CS Amudhan's directorial showcases how our social media posts reveal personal information to manipulators who secretly observe us.

Director CS Amudhan, best known for his full-length spoof Tamizh Padam (2010), delivers a gripping and intense investigative thriller this time around.
Rathtam (Blood) starts on a slow note but soon gains intensity as we are introduced to a plot that revolves around new patterns and trends in crime.
The film begins with the editor of a leading political magazine being brutally stabbed to death in his own office by an inebriated fan, who is miffed that the magazine published a piece against his favourite star.
The death is dismissed as just the act of a crazy fan who is taken into custody.

The owner of the publication, Rathnam Pandian (Nizhalgal Ravi) decides to replace the late editor — who incidentally happened to be his son — with Ranjith Kumar (Vijay Antony) whom he trained in the past.
After getting trained by Pandian, Kumar becomes a highly respected investigative journalist but becomes an alcoholic after the death of his wife.
Kumar, who migrated to Kolkata with his school-going daughter, initially hesitates to take up the offer. As fate would have it, his fragile health condition because of alcoholism worsens and certain developments make him have a change of heart.
He returns to Chennai and agrees to take up Rathnam Pandian’s offer on the condition that he will start off as just an ordinary reporter and not the editor.
Yet to get over his addiction to alcohol, Kumar does nothing much. But soon, he gets into the groove and spots a pattern in the deaths of some prominent people.
As he begins to investigate the deaths closed as straightforward cases, Kumar soon realises that not just those killed but the killers too are victims and that there is a much bigger hand working behind the scenes.
How he uncovers the truth behind the deaths is what Raththam is all about.

Positives and negatives.
Vijay Antony with director CS Amudhan. (X)
Raththam works big time because it not only entertains us as a thriller but also provides us with an insight into how the information we inadvertently and voluntarily disclose about ourselves through social media is used by manipulators who are silently observing us.
The film gives an idea of all that can be done with the information we put out of ourselves.
To his credit, director CS Amudhan comes up with a brilliant concept for a plot.
However, the only disappointment is that the premise which offers so much scope for entertainment isn’t completely exploited.
For the most part, Raththam is almost perfect. But, towards the climax, one gets the feeling of the story being narrated in a tearing hurry.
In fact, there are some questions that remain unanswered even after the climax and this has a telling effect on your satisfaction level.

Perfect casting.
Lead pair in ‘Raththam’. (X)
The film has some fantastic performances to offer.
Mahima Nambiar, who plays the mother of a dyslexic child, stuns you with a commanding performance.
She plays a significant role that has several shades and she delivers on all counts. Her role in Raththam gives Mahima the opportunity to showcase what a powerhouse of talent she is.
The actor gratefully seems to have accepted the opportunity and made full use of it.
Vijay Antony, in his measured manner, scores yet again. He by and large delivers an ideal performance that works big time. Except in a couple of instances where he is shown weeping, Vijay Antony is perfect.
Nandita Swetha, who has not been seen in Tamil cinema for quite some time now, makes a resounding comeback with her impactful role in Raththam . Confident and determined, Nandita plays the role of an acting editor to perfection.
Kannan Narayanan’s music and Gopi Amarnath’s visuals aid Amudhan’s narration.
In short, Raththam might not be perfect on all counts but it certainly is a good investigative thriller.

Raththam review: HIT or FLOP? Will Vijay Antony's film be able to win audiences' hearts? Read this
Raththam Twitter Review: CS Amudhan wrote and directed the film. Vijay Antony, Mahima Nambiar, Nandita Swetha, and Remya Nambeesan will play the main roles. Kannan Narayanan wrote the music. Read this before buying tickets
Ratham is directed by CS Amudhan and stars Vijay Antony, Mahima Nambiar, Ramya Nambeesan, Nanditha Swetha, and others. Kannan Narayanan wrote the soundtrack, and the film opens today. "A date with destiny for two lifelong friends," CS Amudhan said on his Facebook page. Tomorrow. "May it grant us a reprieve."
Vijay Antony plays a crime journalist for the first time in his career. Here's what he said about his role, "It's a very risky profession. Policemen usually carry around a gun with them for protection, but crime journalists, who face equal risks at work, go about their jobs without any weapon or protection. There's immense risk to their lives. The plot revolves around what crime journalists undergo while carrying out an investigation forms the crux of the story."
Check back here for more intriguing Twitter reviews of the film Ratham.
The Ratham movie press conference was recently conducted in Chennai. Vijay Antony was there with his younger daughter Laura.
"Director Amudhan is my friend," Vijay Antony stated during the ceremony. His father worked very hard to teach me music. But he is irritated with me since I came to the cinema without having studied music. For a long period, I considered working with Amudhan. It is now doable after ten years. You may recognise him as a comedy film director. Aside from that, this film has revealed another side of him. This film is bound to be a success."
This is also his first cooperation with CS Amudhan. "His previous films, Tamizh Padam 1 and 2, were huge hits." This video is in an entirely different genre, and I am confident you will enjoy it. When I heard the account of Raththam, I was astounded. Do similar things occur in real life?"
About Raththam When a string of murders wreaks havoc in Chennai, four cabinet ministers are forced to quit. The narrative delves into the relationship between the three pillars of democracy: the legislative, the judiciary, and the media.
Kamal Bora, Lalitha Dhananjeyan, Pradeep, Pankaj Bora, and Vikram Kumar produced the film on behalf of Infinity Film Ventures. The Ratham movie trailer drew attention and generated excitement for the film. Director Amudhan, who captivated audiences with his distinct flair, has now delved into a serious political narrative. The trailer begins with blood and murder, as the title suggests. Vijay Antony is shown in two poses: one with a full beard and one without.

An interesting core but the film remains passable at best.
Most of Raththam plays out like an information dump. The characters on screen keep listing out details akin to a news report. It makes sense in a way as most of the interactions are between journalists but there has to be at least some sort of a connect with the audience. (more)

A crime drama with good ideas and bland execution
In the end, we are left with just a handful of memorable moments - a verbal face-off between the protagonist and antagonist that unfolds in the most harmless fashion on the surface while packing in a lot of tension inside, and their battle of wits as they try to be one step ahead of each other. Raththam movie review
By Chennaivision in Tamil Movie Review October 7, 2023
Raththam begins with the murder of the editor of a media house.
He is killed by a fanatic for an article he published against his idol.
The story then shifts to Kolkata where Vijay Antony is bringing up his daughter as a single father.
After sending her off to school, he drowns himself in alcohol because of losing his wife.
One day, Nizhalgal Ravi, turns up at Vijay Antony’s home and asks him to return to his work as an investigative journalist.
He hesitates at first but eventually comes to Chennai with his daughter.
When he takes up the case of the editor’s murder, he discovers that the crimes are motivated by hate for one another.
Who is the mastermind behind the hate crime and who are the real victims forms the rest of the story.
Director C S Amudhan ensures that he has done a proper amount of homework for his film, by delivering a lot of sequences which are quite new for the audiences.
Apart from constantly throwing up some sort of small surprises throughout the film, it also manages to do a great level of social commentary.
Vijay Antony, with his subdued performance, is good as investigative journalist.
Mahima Nambiar springs a surprise with her performance as well. Nandita Sweta, as an honest journalist, looks the part as well.
Nizhalgal Ravi is superb in a full-fledged role, Jagan has a whistle-worthy moment to his name.
Music by Kannan Narayanan is apt for the theme of the movie. Gopi Amarnath’s camerawork is impressive.
