Easter Homework SATs Revision

In the files section of this page, you will find lots of activities to complete over the Easter break.

As a minimum, we would like you to complete the maths work which is titled, 'Ten-for-Ten-KS2-Maths-Practise-Booklet'.

These booklets are set at 3 different levels: working towards, expected, and greater depth. Your child will know which booklet will be the most appropriate for them.

Within the booklet there are daily activities for your child to complete: 10 x arithmetic questions and 10 x reasoning questions. The answer books have also been provided. It would be fantastic if you could support your child whilst they do their work and then feed back to either Mrs Dunne or Miss Myrtle to let them know how they are getting on.

Not long to go now children- one last push to get over the finish line!

We're right here with you!

KS2 English SATs: understanding the test

At the end of Year 6 children sit a KS2 English SATs exam , which is made up of three papers:

  • Grammar, punctuation and spelling paper 1: this consists of about 49 questions that test grammar and punctuation, and takes 45 minutes.
  • Grammar, punctuation and spelling paper 2:  this is a spelling test. The teacher will read 20 complete sentences out loud. Children have these sentences on a printed sheet with one word missing, and they need to fill in the missing word, spelling it correctly. This takes about 15 minutes.
  • Reading: children are given a booklet containing three texts in different styles (e.g. a story, a non-fiction piece and a poem), and an answer book with approximately 36 questions about the three texts. Children have an hour in which to answer the questions in any order they choose.

Prepare your child for KS2 SATs today

  • Your guide to KS2 SATs
  • KS2 SATs revision course
  • 10 KS2 SATs practice papers in English & maths

Previously, children sat a writing test as part of KS2 SATs, however teachers now assess writing levels by looking at a child's writing throughout the whole  year.

SATs were revamped in 2016. You can download the official KS2 English SATs papers to practise with at home .

You can also download all of the old-style  official past papers for KS2 English   SATs   to help familarise your child with taking exams. These are in a different format from the new tests, but will still be useful for preparation. Read our guide to using past papers for at-home practice .

If your child is revising for KS2 SATs the following tips and activities will help them prepare.

Reading and KS2 English SATs: tips and advice

Read outside the book Children need to get used to reading non-fiction texts as well as stories. Try to encourage children to read texts associated with events or interests that are meaningful to them; for example, if they like football, read through a match programme or a newspaper report with them. If you’re planning a holiday this summer, get your child to read up on your destination of choice.

Give them goals A time limit and a reward can be really motivational, so why not set your child a challenge to read one book a week? At the end of each week, encourage them to tell you about the story and then give them a (small!) reward of their choice. Having said that, make sure you never force them to read something they are not interested in; this is counter-productive, and could put them off reading for good!

Reading together Bring back the 'bedtime story' for your eleven year old! Take turns to read out loud with your child, guaranteed to improve their reading and their listening skills, as well as a brilliant way to spend time together. When you are listening to your child encourage them to read with expression and to do different voices for different characters. You can also ask them comprehension questions (they can test you when it's your turn to read out loud!); look at KS2 SATs Reading tests for ideas on kinds of questions to ask.

Read between the lines When asking your child questions about what they have been reading, think about inference (reading between the lines) and deduction (reading beyond the lines). An example of an inference question is: 'Pick out two phrases that tell us the bear is angry with Goldilocks.' An example of a deduction question is: 'How do you think Goldilocks might have felt as she ran away?' Encourage your child to consider conflicting emotions that characters might be experiencing, for example: 'Maybe she feels happy to have got away from the bears, but a bit guilty about all the trouble she has caused. She might be worried that people will find out and she will get told off.'

Download the sample test Practising a sample SATs paper will help your child enormously. You may want to go through it with them, getting them to read the text aloud to you and then talking through the questions, or you may want to let them do it unaided so that you can see what they are capable of. If you do let them get on with it alone, make sure you go through their answers with them. Maybe just deal with one text at a time, and do it over two days, to avoid pressurising your child.

Grammar and punctuation and KS2 English SATs: tips and advice

In the new grammar and punctuation test, children are likely to be tested on the following:

  • Use of full stops, capitals, commas, brackets, question marks, exclamation marks, speech marks, apostrophes.
  • Understanding what nouns , pronouns , prepositions , contractions , connectives , adjectives , verbs and adverbs are and how to use them.
  • Knowing how to add suffixes and prefixes to words.
  • In sentences, being able to make subjects and verbs agree, putting verbs in the correct tense , inserting words with the correct plural and recognising a subordinate clause .
  • Knowing the difference between direct and indirect speech

The Year 6 English curriculum includes plenty of grammar work to prepare them, but you can also read up about the 'SPAG' test and find grammar practice activities to work through at home on TheSchoolRun. If you are unsure about grammatical vocabulary, look up the terms above in our primary-school literacy glossary to get you up to speed.

Spelling and KS2 English SATs: tips and advice

The following spellings are covered in Years 5 and 6 , and are likely to feature in the spelling paper:

You can download Y5 and Y6 spelling worksheets covering the above spellings.

Of course, it's also important to deal with the spellings that your child is struggling with. One way to do this is to encourage them to write a story or information text for you and then look at the words they are struggling with. Alternatively, ask their teacher if you can look at their literacy book and go through, making a list of types of words that they are getting wrong (for example: words ending -ing or words with ie/ei in them). Encourage them to learn these words and other similar words. Get them to make and decorate their own flashcards, then test them by holding up the card, then putting it face down and asking them to write the word from memory.

Writing and KS2 English SATs: tips and advice

There is no formal SATs test in writing; instead, this will be assessed by your child's teacher throughout the year. However, it's still important to keep your child's writing skills ticking over. Here are some ideas to try at home.

Build up the layers in a sentence Help your child to write more creatively by giving them a practical challenge.

  • Start with a boring sentence, such as: 'The girl had curly hair.'
  • Ask them to think of a couple of adjectives to describe the curls.
  • Could they use a powerful verb and adverb to show how the curls are moving?
  • Could they compare the curls to something else, to create a simile  or a metaphor ?

A much-improved sentence would be: 'The girl had shiny, springy curls that bounced wildly like a jack-in-the-box.'

Structuring texts Does your child enjoy putting pen to paper? Encourage them to write both fiction and non-fiction texts. It can help to look through stories and non-fiction texts they have read and discuss the way they are structured. Help your child to plan a text and then give them a set time limit (say, 45 minutes) to write their text unaided. It is always best to start from something they are interested in, so encourage them to write a different version of a story they love, or write their own information text on something they have found interesting.

Handwriting skills and KS2 English SATs: tips and advice

By Year 6, your child should have got into the habit of good, fluid handwriting, but if this is not the case look through our handwiting advice and practice worksheets . Remind your child that good handwriting means their work it easier to read, but also gives the person marking their writing a better general impression of the writing.

And if you’re after something a bit more lighthearted in the run up to SATs, our collection of maths games , in particular the KS2 maths games are always popular.

How we’ve selected the Year 6 maths worksheets

We are providing here a selection of the pdf Year 6 maths worksheets and, Year 6 maths tests that we believe can be used with minimal support by 10 or 11 year olds as part of their home learning.

The focus here is on retrieval practice . This means working on skills and knowledge a Year 6 should already have been taught (even if they can’t remember it yet!) and supporting them with strategies to approach SATs questions rather than teaching them new content.

Inevitably there’s a focus at this stage on ensuring pupils core number work is really sound, and on the topics that lend themselves well to Year 6 maths worksheets. There’s nothing here for example on identifying shapes or properties of shapes such as parallelograms or quadrilaterals because you can find these easily online already.

Primary National Curriculum guidance and links to other support is given where relevant alongside the maths worksheets.

Year 6 SATs Tests and Year 6 Maths Papers

Of course one of the skills the SATs papers test is identifying exactly what the question is asking for, and which maths operation to undertake. The following practice Year 6 maths sats papers or Year 6 SATs tests provide a range of question types and topics, requiring children to switch between multiplication and division to 2D shapes and 3D shapes from one question to the next. They all include answer sheets so children can self mark as required.

Year 6 SATs Revision Worksheets: Worked Examples

This pack contains a series of SATs style arithmetic and reasoning questions that have already been solved, although the answers may not be correct. Each year 6 sats revision worksheet encourages pupils to find and explain errors, not just focus on finding the correct answer. Again the topics are all mixed up, so the first step is in finding what is being tested.

Year 6 SATs Reasoning Questions

Central to the new maths mastery approach to teaching maths at primary school is the idea that all children of all abilities should be able to solve multi step word problems in maths and reason well. This is why two of the three KS2 SATs papers are SATs reasoning papers.

While these aren’t on a SATs revision worksheet, there are plenty of examples here to help 10 and 11 year olds to practise these kind of questions.

Homework to prepare for the SATs: KS2 Maths

To make sure pupils get the SATs practice they need, it makes sense to set homework that also involves parents/carers. Here are some things to consider.

Set short, focused activities, following on from work in school While children need practice in tackling a mixture of problems on different topics, as in the SATs tests, this is a separate issue to revision and developing fluency. When your aim is to practise particular skills or revise particular topics, sending a mix of problems home is likely to knock a child’s confidence and leave parents unsure how to help.

Parents can best support their child when they are clear what methods the child has been taught. If you send home some problems that children have completed in class, the child can explain their working to the parent. Explaining the solution helps to consolidate the child’s learning, as well as showing the parent the methods to use. Then provide problems that require a similar solution method or skills – for the child to work on with parental support.

Example Classwork and home learning work from the Perimeter and Area sections of Collins KS2 Maths SATs Study Book , Year 6 Maths SATs Targeted Practice Workbook and KS2 Maths SATs Practice Workbook .

Homework Send home the child’s completed classwork, for the child to explain to their parents, plus extra problems on the same topic.

Tell children what the homework is for Children are more likely to complete homework if they know what the purpose of it is. ‘To help with your SATs’ is a bit vague – be more specific, e.g. ‘This homework is to practise solving problems involving area and perimeter’.

Use homework in the next lesson A common complaint from parents is that they make the child do the homework, often against some opposition, but after the homework is handed in, they hear nothing more about it.

Sharing solutions to the homework in the next lesson:

  • Shows children that their work is important and valued
  • Allows you to assess who is confident and who needs more help

Set a variety of homework tasks Homework does not just have to be answering written questions. For variety, set tasks that involve mathematics in everyday life, such as:

  • Estimating the total cost of 5 items when you go shopping, or from a website.
  • Find four different types of quadrilateral in your surroundings, or three different types of angle.
  • Interpret a bar chart or pie chart shown in a newspaper.
  • While cooking, convert measures from grams to kilograms; scale up a recipe for more people.
  • While filling the car with petrol: 1 litre of petrol costs £1.28, what will 10 litres cost?
  • Estimate the area and perimeter of your sitting room.

You can also suggest strategies for developing fluency in multiplication tables and mental maths skills, such as games and quizzes.

Give parents guidance on how to help their child You could send a letter home, or have a parents’ evening session, to explain how you will be setting homework to help with SATs preparation, and how parents can help with that. You might like to include:

  • How homework relates to what the children are learning in school
  • How parents can feed back to you on areas where their child is doing well, or needs more help
  • The types of task – e.g. not all written
  • How much time to spend – short bursts of around 10 minutes
  • Ways of bringing mathematics into everyday life
  • Fostering a positive attitude to mathematics and problem solving – leading by example
  • Praising the child for how hard they have worked or tried, rather than their ‘score’.
  • Using the word ‘yet’, to imply that you will succeed eventually. Eg. ‘you have tried really hard, but you haven’t learned all your 7 times table yet’.

Follow our news, recent searches, commentary: should holiday homework be banned, advertisement.

The June school holidays have started, but many students and families are experiencing a familiar mix of anticipation and dread, says Dr Eugenia Koh-Chua, a former lecturer and mother of two.

This audio is AI-generated.

Eugenia Koh-Chua

MELBOURNE: The June school holidays  have started for primary and secondary schools as well as junior colleges.  With school out, the fun should begin - but does it really?

While many look forward to a respite from the daily grind of school , the burden of holiday homework hangs over them.

For many parents and tutors, the mid-year break is also the perfect time for an extra academic boost. Let’s not forget June holiday boot camps and intensive revision programmes arranged by teachers and enterprising tuition centres for Primary 6 students taking their Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) this year.

The term “holiday homework” itself is contradictory, prompting the question: Should school breaks be a protected sanctuary from homework, or is the expectation of holiday assignments an unavoidable reality?

A BAN ON HOMEWORK?

The debate surrounding holiday homework extends beyond the borders of Singapore.

In the Philippines, legislative attempts to enforce a weekend homework ban have been ongoing since 2016.  In 2021, the Chinese government enacted the Double Reduction Policy , which includes a limit on homework and a ban on private tutoring classes.

Meanwhile, in Poland, a ban on graded homework for students in lower primary took effect in April. Homework for children in upper primary levels is optional and does not count towards a grade.

These efforts share a common goal: To alleviate the burden of excessive homework and promote greater student well-being.  However, the effectiveness of these measures remains questionable.

In China, the mandate has driven the industry underground and led to exorbitant rates , exacerbating educational inequity. The Chinese experience suggests the potential pitfalls of using a simplistic solution like a hard legislative ban to address a complex social issue.

Drawing lessons from these global examples, I wonder: Should the focus shift from eliminating homework to understanding why parents and schools perceive it as necessary?

Commentary: A China-like tuition ban may not work, but Singapore can still find ways to address overreliance

China launches campaign to halt school bullying, excessive homework

Is homework beneficial.

While the debate on homework rages on, educational research has acknowledged the many potential benefits it serves.

Homework helps to reinforce academic concepts at home, develops time management skills, and encourages independent learning in children.

Learning at home can offer a more adaptable environment that caters to individual student’s learning pace and needs, particularly benefiting those who thrive with additional support.  Moreover, homework functions as a crucial link between school and home, allowing parents to stay informed of their children’s academic progress.

At the same time, however, an Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) survey published in 2017 showed that 66.7 per cent   of parents with primary school children agreed or strongly agreed that they were stressed over assisting with homework and ferrying them to and from school, and tuition or enrichment classes.

Additionally, nearly 94 per cent of parents in the study expressed a need for the primary school curriculum to be more manageable, reflecting the struggle many parents face in grasping the modern curriculum while balancing work demands in typical dual-income Singaporean households.

In my doctoral study on Singaporean parents’ tensions within education reform, one parent candidly remarked on this struggle: “I don’t think I can impart the (knowledge) skills to them. And I don’t want my children to lose out."

Consequently, many parents delegate homework guidance to educational experts - tuition teachers.

Families spent an estimated S$1.4 billion (US$1 billion) on tuition in 2018, based on data from the last Household Expenditure Survey in 2017 and 2018, up from S$1.1 billion in 2012 and 2013.

These insights highlight parents’ challenges in supporting their children’s learning at home due to a lack of knowledge, skills, time, and energy. Consequently, schools must consider these factors when designing and assigning homework.

Daily Cuts:

sats revision and homework tasks

Commentary: Parents play an outsized role in academic stress children face

Perceived benefits of after-school learning.

Research consistently emphasises the importance of play in nurturing the holistic development of children. What then motivates parents to enrol their children in tuition classes during school holidays?

Many parents I’ve spoken say they feel like they have “no choice” as they mitigate the pressures of a high-stakes education system.

They question how much play alone can contribute to children’s social-emotional well-being if they fail to perform academically. One parent stated, “I don’t need (my child) to be at the top, but I don’t want him to be at the bottom either”.

Parental guilt also motivates many to enrol their children in out-of-school classes. As one parent explained: “If my kids are idle or roaming around at home, I will feel bad as a parent … because it feels like my child is wasting his life away”.

Teachers participating in my doctoral study also reluctantly acknowledge the value of tuition classes for “weaker students”. Unfortunately, in a class size of 40, teachers lack the time and staffing to cater to each child’s learning needs while covering the school curriculum.

They also cited pressure from school leaders and managing familial expectations to assign homework as an indicator of a “good teacher”.

sats revision and homework tasks

FIND HARMONY, NOT BALANCE

Amid the ongoing discussion on finding the right balance between work and play for students, the term “balance” implies a rigid 50-50 split between “work versus play”, overlooking the unique needs and strengths of each child, family, and school.

Rather than fixating on achieving a static “balance”, might it be better to consider striving for a harmonious blend between work and play? This approach encourages families and schools to identify the optimal mix that suits their specific contexts, fostering an environment where children can thrive in both learning and well-being.

The ideal combination of work and play will naturally vary in each family, classroom, and school, based on their diverse values, cultures, and aspirations. Nonetheless, this optimal mix should be viewed as fluid and dynamic, constantly adapting to suit the evolving needs of children.

Student agency is an essential ingredient in this optimal blend. Schools should actively seek student input on their homework experiences and understand their preferences for how it is assigned and evaluated.

This not only empowers students but also ensures that homework policies are responsive to their needs and interests.

Schools could consider moving away from compulsory holiday homework towards recommended assignments. Allow parents to determine and decide the homework load that best suits their child based on their family values and aspirations.

Many teachers are already offering non-mandatory assignments in the Student Learning Space online portal during mid-year and end-of-year school holidays. However, it is crucial to complement these assignments with online explanatory videos that provide solutions.

This approach is essential to support struggling students and enhance their self-efficacy by ensuring they understand how to approach and solve the questions independently at home.

Ideally, homework tasks should prioritise inquiry-based learning, embracing a play-based approach that fosters engagement and creativity.

Given the absence of time constraints in the classroom, these tasks can encourage students to explore core learning concepts with scaffolding prompts, developing learner autonomy, and stimulating greater engagement and creativity.

Commentary: PSLE stress – a question of not too much, not too little

Through collaborative efforts, schools and families can create a supportive environment that fosters student success and well-being.

In an ideal scenario, if schools and families can embrace a unified approach to revamping homework practices and reimagining the objectives of holiday assignments , we may just be able to find that sweet spot between work and play during the June holidays.
