Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam was born into a Muslim family on October 15, 1931, on the island of Dhanushkodi off the southeastern coast of India. He developed an early fascination with flight by watching birds, which developed into an interest in aeronautics after he saw a newspaper article about a British fighter plane.

Despite his modest beginnings – his dad built and rented boats – Kalam was a bright student who showed promise in science and mathematics. He attended St. Joseph's College and went on to earn a degree in aeronautical engineering from the Madras Institute of Technology.

His hopes of becoming a fighter pilot were dashed when he narrowly missed out on a spot with the Indian Air Force. Kalam instead joined the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) as a senior scientific assistant in 1958. After moving to the newly formed Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) in 1969, he was named project director of the SLV-III, the first satellite launch vehicle designed and produced on Indian soil.

Returning to the DRDO as director in 1982, Kalam implemented the Integrated Guided Missile Development Program. He then became the senior scientific adviser to India's defense minister in 1992, a position he used to campaign for the development of nuclear tests.

Kalam was a key figure in the May 1998 Pokhran-II tests, in which five nuclear devices were detonated in the Rajasthan Desert. Although the tests resulted in condemnation and economic sanctions from other world powers, Kalam was hailed as a national hero for his staunch defense of the country’s security.

In 2002, India's ruling National Democratic Alliance helped Kalam win an election against Lakshmi Sahgal and become India's 11th president, a largely ceremonial post. Known as the People's President, Kalam set a goal of conducting 500,000 one-on-one meetings with young people over the course of his five-year term. His immense popularity led to him being nominated by MTV for a Youth Icon of the Year award in 2003 and 2006.

After leaving office in 2007, Kalam became a visiting professor at several universities. He formed the "What Can I Give Movement" in 2011 with the goal of creating a compassionate society, and in 2012, his efforts to improve healthcare led to the release of a tablet for medical personnel to use in remote areas.

On July 27, 2015, Kalam suffered a massive heart attack while lecturing at the Indian Institute of Management and subsequently died at the age of 83.

Kalam was laid to rest on July 30 with full state honors in his native Tamil Nadu. In honor of the scientist and former president, the southeast Indian state government of Tamil Nadu created a "Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Award," which recognizes exceptional individuals who promote the sciences, students and humanities. The government has also established Kalam's birthday (October 15) as "Youth Renaissance Day." Discussion about building a large-scale memorial at his burial site is underway.

Among his many accolades, including honorary doctorates from 40 universities, he was granted the Padma Bhushan (1981), the Padma Vibhushan (1990) and the Bharat Ratna (1997) — India's highest civilian awards — for his contributions in modernizing government defense technology. At the same time, his mother, Ashiamma, was a housewife. Kalam had four brothers and one sister in his family, from which he was the youngest. Kalam joined as a scientist in the aeronautical development establishment of DRDO in 1960, after graduation. His career started with him designing a small hovercraft. It was sometime during the mid-2000s; the ballroom in the Taj Mahal Hotel in Mumbai was packed to its capacity with eminent cardiologists from across the globe. They had gathered to participate in the international medical conference on 'non-invasive cardiac management' to be inaugurated by then President Dr Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam. On the day, it was announced that the President had a fall and broke his arm. However, not wishing to go back on his commitment, he was going to address the audience from the presidential mansion through video conferencing. For most people in the audience, doctors as well as journalists, it was a huge disappointment. Two large television screens were set up on either side of the podium. At the designated time, Dr Kalam promptly walked into camera focus. With one hand in a sling, he appeared perfectly composed; with the other he waved to the audience. He then apologised to the crowd for not being able to join them in person as agreed. "Life is what happens to you while you are busy making other plans," he said. Before the audience could realise what he meant by that statement, he pointed towards someone sitting in the journalists' bloc and said, "Sir, you don't have to take notes, the transcript of my speech will be uploaded on the President's web site in an hour from now." What followed later baffled many in the audience, especially those who had come to participate in the conference from abroad. Dr Kalam spoke with the assistance of presentation slides on how nanotechnology could be used in the management of heart ailments. The cardiologists in the audience were in for more surprises when he told them about his endeavours in applying defence technologies to cure heart diseases. It was back in 1998 where, in collaboration with a Hyderabad-based eminent cardiologist, Dr Soma Raju, he developed a low-cost coronary stent, that was later patented as the 'Kalam-Raju' stent. The locally developed stent cost only a fraction of the imported ones, proving its affordability to the country's average citizens. The chain of hospitals under Dr Raju's Care Foundation successfully implanted the Kalam-Raju stents in 511 heart patients within a span of three years. After the Q&A session, a cardiologist from Europe remarked, "If only in Europe we too had presidents like you, sir, rather than mere politicians." Dr Kalam dismissed his comment with a light-hearted smile. Making strides across the nation Sceptics argue that he was not the finest engineer produced in the country, nor was he the most erudite in the history of the occupants of its highest office. He did not obtain an academic PhD, though 30 universities had conferred their honorary doctorates on him. It was during his term as Project Director that the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) put 'Rohini' into space and got the initial PSLV design right. However, they are still struggling when it comes to Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV). As a consequence, the Mars mission had to be powered by the less potent PSLV. Because it lacked the power to plot a straightforward path to Mars, a complicated work around had to be engineered for dealing with the Earth's gravity. While the development of the missile deterrents (Prithvi, Agni, Akash) and the 'Light Combat Aircraft' (though yet to be inducted into the IAF) have been significant, other key defence projects like the 'main battle tank' and 'gun-radars' are years behind schedule. Though the delays cannot be solely attributed to Dr Kalam, he was at the helm of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), long enough to push these projects forward, which floundered to deliver. Some scientific circles also point out that Pokhran-II was only a "semi-success". It may be worth mentioning that none of the countries in possession of the H-bomb were able to roll out the contrivance in their initial attempts. Several DRDO scientists who were part of Pokhran-II and Pokhran-I, citing seismic statistics and energy outputs say that the H-bomb demonstration was not successful. Most people associated with Dr Kalam admire his leadership qualities and his ability to dodge bureaucratic snags. However, many have doubted his competency as an aeronautical engineer. Not surprisingly, both IIS Bangalore, and IIT Madras did not want to admit him into the ranks of their teaching faculty. Strong political gamut Dr Kalam's nomination as President was nothing short of a masterstroke by the NDA. Being the first BJP-led government, they considered it a great asset to find room for a Muslim national hero in the nation's highest office. Despite his naïveté with the political gamut, Dr Kalam adapted without losing time to his new responsibilities. During the year-long standoff with Pakistan at the verge of war, and the times following the Gujarat riots, Dr Kalam's mellowed permeation proved to be nothing short of allaying for the NDA. Years later, in an interview with journalist Karan Thapar, former prime minister Manmohan Singh conceded that without Dr Kalam there would have been no nuclear deal with the US. In the 2008 monsoon session of parliament, Communist Party Politbureau Secretary Prakash Karat announced their block's withdrawal of support to the UPA. The Congress soon approached Mulayam Singh Yadav who boasted of a large Muslim vote bank under his wings. But it was Dr Kalam's incitement to Yadav that actually swung the votes in UPA's favour. Hardly a year ago when Dr Kalam had agreed to continue in office for another term on condition of unanimity, the Congress party vetoed the call. For a political game player this would have been the perfect opportunity to get even with the Congress and show his requital to the NDA who had rewarded him with the Bharat Ratna and the presidency. But then Dr Kalam outgrew himself from such petty political witch-hunt that earned him more than reverence from either side of the ideological spectrum at a time of intense political polarisation. The boatman's son from the little known fishing village of Rameswaram invariably went on to symbolise the best of India, the India with its composite mosaic of ethnicities, faiths and languages that synthesise themselves to form one unique identity. Surprising nominations With his long hair parted unfashionably in the centre and combed down to the sides reaching over his ears, Dr Kalam was an unlikely pop culture idol. Yet he adapted himself to much of the protocol demanded by the highest office he had come to occupy, without ever compromising on his hair style. The news of having nominated for the MTV Youth Icon of the Year in 2003 and 2006 must have surprised him, given that his idea of music had little in common with MTV's. As a matter of fact, the tag that Dr Kalam showed preference in being identified with was not that of the former President of the nation, nor the 'missile man', but of the 'teacher' who would always impart knowledge to the next generation. That's exactly what he was doing at the IIM in Shillong during the final moments of his life, because he believed that knowledge always gave one the leverage over one's adversaries and life is an endless pursuit of its attainment. He talked and walked that adage.

Humility, simplicity, compassion: What interactions with Dr Kalam taught me

The time I spent with Dr Kalam is no less than a legacy that I have inherited. We met for the first time during my IIM-A days in 2009. He was visiting our campus as co-faculty for a course in nation building and I was one of the few students in his class.

What followed were a series of interactions during the classes and a chance meeting with him after the course got over — and life took a 180-degree turn. One moment I was geared to go for this MNC job and the next moment I came face to face with a truth that was embedded in one simple question he asked: “So, Srijan, you have been gifted with the best education, blessed with high intelligence and you have acquired the much sought-after golden recognition. Don’t you think that it is now your responsibility to use all this not only for your own progress, but also for the progress of the nation and for solving the problems of the world? Wouldn’t that be doing true justice to your abilities?”

In what one would term as a snap decision, I had made up my mind. And thus, began my journey with my childhood idol.

From 2009 to 2015, I witnessed immense humility, simplicity, profound wisdom and the sheer spirit of giving to others unconditionally — the core values by which Dr Kalam lived his life.

I was part of the countless lectures he delivered and listened to his thoughts and ideas that he shared with people. We shared conversations during our many lunches, dinners and walks; and each of these associations ignited new thoughts and ideas in me. As I write this, I am reminded of all the brilliant thoughts he sparked and how each of those thoughts helped me to learn, evolve and transform. My learning with him was just not confined to mere ideas that we shared but also in making me a better human being for I witnessed not just a pragmatic boss but also an emotionally thoughtful human being.

One of the things that really inspired me was Dr Kalam’s sensitivity towards the people he called his friends. His love for friends and his thoughtfulness were commendable and taught me a lot about the strength of the bond of friendship. A very simple but touching incident that I have mentioned in my book – What Can I Give? Lessons from My Teacher, APJ Abdul Kalam – comes to my mind.

Back in 2014, Dr Kalam and I were visiting the Scottish city of Edinburgh, known world over for its research. As was his schedule during most of our trips, a series of visits were planned to various laboratories. One of the visits was to Anne Rowling Regenerative Neurology clinic headed by Professor Siddharthan Chandran. He showed us all the work being conducted in this small but cutting edge laboratory and we were quite impressed by what we saw.

As we were about to conclude our meeting, we came across the last researcher — a young lady from England. She was working on a very special technology to regenerate speech and her project was aimed at helping those who were suffering from brain degeneration leading to loss of the ability to speak over time.

The innovation she was working on to fix this problem was called voice banking which could be used to store a person’s voice and later be used in communicating with others. While we were all quite impressed, Dr Kalam had a very particular interest in the said technology. He asked a series of questions to understand more on this and left saying he would like to know further.

Unable to curb my curiosity over his keen interest in the voice banking, I asked him the reason for the same to which he replied, “I have a friend, a wonderful man whom I respect a lot. He was a great orator once but now he has a lot of difficulty in speaking fluently. I want to hear him speak beautifully again. You know who he is?”

Before I could reply, he answered his own question: ‘Vajpayee ji.’

It was extremely touching and endearing to see Dr Kalam’s love, and compassion for his dear friend, whom he hadn’t met for so long. Due to my schedule, I would often lose touch with my friends and disconnect. That incident taught me a valuable lesson about the strength of friendship and how it transcends geographical boundaries.

Have you ever seen a beautiful sunset? I have, when I was a little boy, standing near the sea at Rameswaram, the town where I grew up. As the suns goes lower and lower, the sky turns a vivid red and golden. The sea reflects this beautiful play of colours, and as you keep watching, the sun dips further till it seems to disappear into the water.

This is one of my favourite memories of my boyhood—of standing by the seashore, watching the sun go down, and then racing home to my mother. Our house was in a street called Mosque Street, and it was built by my father. I was born in this house on 15 October 1931. In fact, I am told that I was the first child to be born in this house! I was the youngest of all my siblings. There were so many of us living in that house! Some of you may know what it is like to live with brothers and sisters and aunts and uncles and grandparents.

We, too, lived like that—always surrounded by elders and children, old and young. We had so much fun, playing games, studying and going to school together.

This does not mean that we were very rich. My father had some land where he grew coconut and other plants. He also had a boat that was used to ferry pilgrims. We were comfortably off and I went to the local school with all the other children. My mother, Ashiamma, was a wonderful cook. I may be old now, but I still remember the taste of the sambar and chutney she made for us that we ate from banana leaves sitting on the kitchen floor.

My father would visit his coconut grove frequently. On the days he went there, he woke up very early and walked to the plantation which was some distance from the house.

I loved to accompany him but could go only on some days, when I didn’t have school or classes to attend. We would set out from our home before the sun was up and the light was only beginning to appear in the sky. It was usually cool and there would be a breeze coming in from the sea. I would hold his hand and walk quietly by his side for he would be saying his prayers under his breath. Then, something interesting would catch my attention, and I would forget to be quiet.

‘Appa, did you hear how loudly that crow just cawed?’

‘Appa, why does the sky change in colour so many times from morning to night? Do you think it likes to change clothes like us?’

‘Appa, why does it rain? I like rain because then my friends and I can splash in the puddles in school and Amma makes special bhajjis .’

My father would listen to all this chatter patiently, with a smile on his face. We walked to the end of the road, went by the mosque, past the famous Rameswaram temple and then took a route to his coconut grove. There, I sat by his side and listened to him talk to the caretaker about soil and manure and rains. I loved standing under those tall trees and looking into the swaying fronds. The light would flicker in and out between the leaves, teasing my eyes. I would close one eye and the light would seem even brighter, as if the morning sun was winking back at me, telling me to have fun through the day.
