25 Teacher Cover Letters Examples To Help You Get Hired

Your guide to a killer cover letter that will get you that interview.

Teacher Cover Letter Examples

Whether you are sending out resumes hoping to land your first teaching job or looking to shift to a new school or district, one fact remains the same: All the best credentials, experience, and passion will go unnoticed without a strong cover letter. The main rule? Sell yourself the way a publicist would. Cover letters aren’t a time for modesty. They’re a time to highlight your accomplishments and make your passion for teaching known. Below you’ll find our tips for creating the best cover letter possible and our top teacher cover letter and CV examples.

3 top tips for crafting a teacher CV or cover letter:

Keep it short and sweet..

You’ve only got about 30 seconds to capture a hiring director’s attention, so start with what we call “the elevator pitch.” Imagine you have the time between the elevators closing on one floor and opening again on another floor to sell yourself. Instead of rehashing everything on your resume, use the space to craft a paragraph or two that will convince them you are a standout candidate and are worth moving on to the next step.

Emphasize why you’re a great match.

Read the job description and find the overlap between the skills you bring to the table and the skills they need. If the job description calls for certain qualities or uses specific language, repeat them in your cover letter! The ultimate goal for your cover letter is to say, “You’ve got a problem? I’m the ideal person to solve it.” Be professional and use concrete examples.

Individualize!

Tailor each and every cover letter to fit the specific school, district, and job for which you’re applying. Research the school and its culture. That way, you can address their expectations and also use specific examples of achievements in your history to show why you’re the right candidate for the position.

Jumoke Lawson 123 Yaba Ugo Street Yaba Lagos [email protected]

September 24, 2021

Mr. Umar Kabiru Green Peak School 123 Main Street Victoria Island Lagos

Dear Mr. Umar,

I am interested in applying for a secondary teaching position in your school. As a graduate of Yaba College of Education, I have required teaching experience on the JSS 1, 2 and 3 level, in both Physics and Mathematics. I believe my years of teaching experience, coupled with my passion for community engagement make me an ideal candidate for this teaching position.

I am currently teaching JSS 2 students at Bright Stars Secondary School and I have experience teaching secondary school students in a variety of settings. Having held the position of education coordinator at my previous roles, I also have experience in management in the school system. Based on my understanding that this position requires a teacher with varied experiences in the school system, I think my varied experiences would make me a valuable asset for your school.

Part of your school's mission is to engage students from diverse cultures. I have extensive experience incorporating teaching styles that promote cultural diversity and inclusion into my classrooms. For example, as a teacher at Bright Stars Secondary School, I helped the management incorporate Culture Times in the extracurricular activities for the students, which helps students learn about the different cultures of fellow students in a fun way.

My goal is to combine my wide experience and quality of being a compassionate and intelligent teacher to make positive contributions that will benefit your students, school district and community at large.

I hope to hear from you at your earliest convenience.

Sincerely, [signature hard copy letter] Jumoke Lawson

Teaching Job Application Letter Writing Tips With Examples

teaching job application writing tips with examples

Have you ever been told you don’t need an application letter for a teaching job? Based on my conversations with many academic hiring authorities, you NEED one.

One of the most essential parts of the academic job search process is your teaching job application letter. Even a cover letter for a new teacher with no experience is critical. Grab a coffee, relax, and review these application letter writing tips to give you ideas to create your own.

Why would you risk not sending an application letter?

It is usually the first thing a school administrator or district superintendent looks at when hiring a new teacher applicant. An application letter, or a teacher cover letter, is how you introduce yourself as a teacher candidate. A one-page letter allows you to convey your passion, relevant expertise, credentials, and skills. Make sure you are not guilty of writing a long-winded cover letter .

Please don’t make it too short; you must communicate your value. It’s a balancing act!

How you write your application letter for a teaching job will determine if you will convince the reader to move on to your academic teaching resume and be offered a job interview. You must develop a hard-hitting, attention-grabbing application or cover letter with relevant keywords, teaching accomplishments, and action words that prove your worth as a teacher candidate.

Formatting a teacher application letter properly can be difficult if you are unfamiliar with technology and using word processing programs. It is best to match the resume formatting used to create your resume to keep your presentation consistent.

Writing an Application Letter Takes Time – Don’t Rush

First paragraph of your academic application letter.

The first paragraph of your application letter for a teaching position should address the position of interest and the fact that you are submitting your resume for consideration. A hiring school administrator may be looking to fill several positions; therefore, it is necessary to let the reader know right away which position is interesting. Other topics to incorporate into the opening portion of your cover letter include:

• Educational credentials, i.e., Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s Degree • Teaching certifications and licenses • Years of classroom experience or related expertise

If you are a student teacher or a new classroom teacher, you do not need to include your years of experience. Instead, it would be best to focus on the credentials, skills, commitment, and enthusiasm you bring to the classroom.

Including more in-depth, relevant details when writing your student teacher resume will provide the reader with additional qualifications and evidence of accomplishments. Don’t go overboard with including too many specific details when writing the cover letter .

Middle Paragraph of a Teacher’s Application Letter

Certain things within your application letter for a teaching position should be included to ensure you stand out from your competition. One of the best ways to skyrocket your resume straight to the top of the “to read” pile is by uncovering and including your teaching accomplishments .

These should be unique, quantifiable, and exceptional achievements that impress the reader. For instance, you may have differentiated instruction in your classroom, which is now expected of all educators. Therefore, you need to say how you could differentiate instruction and what it accomplished for your students.

Teaching Application Letter Example Sentence s

“Surveying students to understand their diverse interests, and by incorporating technology and literature geared toward these, I was able to effectively facilitate all types and levels of learners, and leave students eager to learn more.”

“Integrating popular literature, innovative technology, and multidisciplinary units allows me to pique student interest, demonstrate real-world connections, and accommodate multiple intelligences.”

As mentioned before, quantifiable accomplishments are preferential to use in your educator cover letter, as they are a way of proving you are a successful teacher. Using facts and numbers is an excellent method for capturing your skills and talents in the classroom.

Examples of academic resume accomplishments:

  • Incorporating a literature circle, literature-based units, and exciting group projects raised student reading levels by at least one level by the end of the school year.”
  • A struggling and discontent student started the school year with a minimum passing grade of 55%. I provided after-school tutoring and individualized instruction during class time and worked with his parents to ensure further education in the home. By the end of the school year, the same student had developed a new appreciation for the school and passed with a grade of 81%.”

However, there may be other teaching accomplishments that haven’t even come to mind yet. Once again, you don’t want to include too much. Another place to communicate your authenticity is by writing a teaching philosophy statement . We call this an added job search marketing document. It gets results!

Uncover Relevant Teaching Accomplishments by  Answering These Questions

Have you pioneered any teaching techniques or educational programs that have proven successful in your school?

Were you asked to fill in for the assistant principal due to your leadership skills?

Did you receive an award from the school or district commending you on your instructional abilities?

These are all worth mentioning in your teacher application letter and resume.

Final Paragraph Writing Ideas

Make sure you thank the reader for their time and that you are looking forward to hearing from them soon. Address any points you feel do not fall into the standard categories (experience, credentials, achievements, strengths). Mention you are willing to participate in extra-curricular activities and lead school sports or clubs. If, of course, this is true!

Additional Application Letter Writing Tips for Educators

As mentioned earlier, your teaching job application letter should follow the same format as your teacher’s resume. Maintaining consistency between your documents ensures the hiring administrator can match them quickly.

For example, if you use a border in your application letter, use the same border in your resume. All fonts and sizes should match. Academic credentials should be similar (i.e., Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education). Maintaining consistency will demonstrate attention to detail and organization.

Further things to consider when writing application letters to schools

Further things to consider when writing application letters to schools

Application Letters

Application letters are letters that you write to formally request for something from authority, apply for a job, or join an institution. Effective application letters will give a detailed explanation for your interest in the specific item, company, or institution. They showcase your abilities and strengths and illustrate your experience. In most cases, people write application letters to express their interest in receiving a position, attending an institution, or when applying for a visa, for instance. In all scenarios, application letters must be accompanied by the relevant documents. Application letters are the perfect tool to demonstrate something of your personality. Therefore, you should write in a professional tone setting a clear outline that allows the reader to scan the primary data quickly. Introduce yourself and briefly explain your intent and reason for the application. Address the letter with a title or name of the recipient. If your application is for a job or to join an institution, for example, you need to highlight your experience and qualification; if you are applying for a travel visa, make sure to state a clear intention for your travel. End with a positive tone and invite the recipient to contact you.

Letters to Schools

Letters to schools are letters written to institutions designed to provide learning environment and spaces to pupils and students. There are many times when you may feel the need to write to a school administration. Maybe you want to recommend a student or employee or want to apply for an academic program. Perhaps your child has a disability, and you want to make sure that he/she is receiving special education services. Whatever the issue, putting your thoughts in writing avoids confusion since it provides you and the recipient with a record of your request. It is, therefore, crucial to keep a copy of any letter you send. All letters to schools must use the standard business letter style. Start your letter with the proper address and salutation. Introduce yourself and explain the reason for your letter clearly and concisely. Depending on the content of your letter, provide any documentation that gives the recipient reference to the case or clarifies your concerns. Keep the tone polite, respectful, and professional. Close by thanking the recipient for his/her time and with a note of anticipation of positive feedback. Sign off and proofread the final draft before sending it.

What Is a Teacher Contract?

A teacher contract is a specific type of employment contract . As its name implies, it’s a legally-binding document that obligates a newly-hired teacher to officially perform his or her teaching and classroom management duties on campus. Essentially, it prompts them to stay in line with their job description .

Offering a teacher contract is the final step in onboarding a new teacher under your school’s employment. Without it, a teacher will not be an official member of the school faculty. As mentioned earlier, a teacher contract obligates him or her to perform. That said, it ensures that a new teacher will carry out his or her responsibilities, helping your school in serving its purpose to its students.

Teacher contracts protect your school from educators who might commit unethical actions. They have clauses that can give school employers the authority to terminate them. Causes for termination are likely incompetence, neglecting duties, and student harassment. However, such incidents wouldn’t occur if you screen teacher candidates well before hiring them. In that case, those contract clauses will be more like precautions.

Why Does a Teacher Need a Contract?

Teacher contracts aren’t only for the school’s benefit and protection, but teachers as well. By offering them such legal contracts , your school is implying that its administration will fulfill their duties as the teachers’ employer. These duties include paying their monthly salary , providing benefits, and supporting their classroom needs. With those said, teacher contracts ensure that the employee-employer relationship of the school admin and faculty staff is a win-win deal.

How to Create a Teacher Contract

As your school’s hiring manager, it’s your responsibility to write employee contracts to new teachers. Your job isn’t just hiring, but also ensuring that the faculty will abide by the school’s  policy  and perform their duties. It also your job to assure new teachers that they’ll have secure employment on campus. You do those duties by writing contracts . So, now we’ll teach you the basic process of creating teacher contracts.

1. Specify the Involved Parties

A teacher contract form is useless if it doesn’t convey who are the parties involved in it. So, as the first step, make sure to specify the teacher’s complete name and your school’s official name. They’re the entities involved in a teacher contract. Also include the teacher’s other information, such as contact number and email address. And don’t forget to specify his or her specific teaching job, be it an online teacher job, a Math teacher, an English teacher, etc.

2. Emphasize the Start Date and End Date

Most employment contracts, be it a full-time or part-time employment contract, have a start date and end date. And teacher contracts are no exception. With that in mind, you have to emphasize when the new teacher will start teaching, as well as his or her last day. The start date and end date indicates when the contract will take full effect and when it’ll be null and void.

The contract obligates the teacher to do his or her duties between the start and end date. But he or she may leave the school before the contract expires, and that can affect the school’s workforce. For that reason, you should include a bond agreement for teachers in the contract. A bond is a contract clause that forces an employee to pay the company if he or she leaves before finishing the contract. Its purpose is to discourage employees from leaving their employers before the expiration of their contracts.

Moreover, when a teacher contract expires, you can renew it, especially if the teacher performed well and received positive faculty evaluation from the students.

3. State Salary and Benefits Clearly

Regardless if you’re writing a part-time teacher contract sample, a private school teacher contract sample, a preschool teacher contract sample, or any kind of teacher contract, info about salary and benefits must be present. A newly-hired teacher has a right to feel assured that he or she will receive enough salary and benefits from the school’s payroll . The only thing that can give the teacher that assurance is a contract.

Teachers salaries range between $31,000 to $60,000 per year, with a $43,000 average, according to Glassdoor . You can set a new teacher’s salary based on that. Make sure that it matches with his or her experience and skill level. In that way, your school will avoid underpaying or overpaying a teacher.

4. Highlight Duties and Responsibilities

A teacher contract must highlight the teacher’s duties and responsibilities in the school. So, make sure to make it so when you write one. This step establishes the teacher’s area of jurisdiction on campus. Writing this part of the contract shouldn’t be difficult. You’ll just be referring to existing teaching job descriptions.

5. Include Terms for Immediate Termination

You have to cut ties from teachers who commit very unacceptable actions. That’s why you must include terms for immediate termination. You can’t have teachers who could jeopardize the student’s education and your school’s reputation. As mentioned earlier, teacher contracts protect your school from educators who might commit unethical actions. So give your school admin the authority to issue an immediate termination letter to such teachers.

What should happen when a teacher commits a breach of contract?

It depends on the degree of his or her violation. For example, frequent tardiness and absences are glaring, but it’s not a case of immediate termination. Calling the teacher’s attention or suspending him or her is a viable sanction for that. But during the second or third offense, the school admins could have the right to fire the teacher. However, for grave offenses such as student harassment and stealing school property and private data, those can be grounds for immediate termination. On top of that, the school can also file a case against the teacher.

When is the best time to onboard new teachers?

The best time of the year to hire new teachers is during summer break. That’s because there are no classes, and it’s a time when most unemployed teachers, especially new grads, hunt for teaching jobs.

Should teachers get paid during a shutdown?

Circumstances such as a pandemic force schools to shut down temporarily. Thus, there’ll be no classes. Some schools continue paying their teachers during a shutdown. But some struggle to do so. Other schools don’t pay them at all.

It’s up to your school if the teachers will continue receiving their salary. But if they opt not to, that would undoubtedly shed a bad light on your school. In that case, your school should arrange online classes.

Out of all the formal documents in existence, contracts are among those that carry heavy importance. They could make or break a deal between two parties. So, always make sure to prepare a solid teacher contract before bringing a new teacher on board. Take advantage of a teacher contract template for that.

Benefits of Teacher Agreement Contract

benefits of teacher agreement contract 1024x530

Teacher Agreement Contracts play a pivotal role in the educational sector, benefiting both teachers and educational institutions alike. These contracts not only delineate the expectations and responsibilities of each party but also offer numerous advantages:

  • Clarity of Role : A Teacher Agreement Contract clearly defines the role, duties, and responsibilities of the teacher. This clarity helps prevent misunderstandings and ensures that both the teacher and the school have a shared understanding of the job’s expectations.
  • Job Security : By outlining the terms of employment, including duration, compensation, and conditions for renewal or termination, the contract provides teachers with a sense of job security and stability, which is essential for long-term planning and personal peace of mind.
  • Professional Growth : Many contracts include provisions for professional development, specifying commitments to training, workshops, or further education. This not only aids in the teacher’s professional growth but also enriches the learning environment for students.
  • Legal Protection : The contract serves as a legal document that protects both the teacher and the school. It offers a clear recourse in case of disputes and ensures that any issues can be resolved based on the agreed-upon terms.
  • Compensation and Benefits : Teacher Agreement Contracts detail the compensation package, including salary, benefits, and allowances. This transparency helps teachers make informed decisions about their employment and ensures they are fairly compensated for their work.
  • Work-Life Balance : With specified working hours, leave entitlements, and holidays, contracts help maintain a healthy work-life balance, contributing to teacher wellbeing and job satisfaction.
  • Performance Evaluation : Contracts often outline criteria and schedules for performance evaluations, providing teachers with opportunities for feedback and avenues for career advancement based on merit.
  • Enhanced Commitment : A formal agreement fosters a sense of commitment between the teacher and the school. Teachers are more likely to be invested in their roles and the success of their students, knowing they have the school’s support as outlined in the contract.

In essence, Teacher Agreement Contracts are foundational to creating a productive, respectful, and supportive working relationship between teachers and educational institutions. They not only safeguard the interests of both parties but also contribute to a stable and conducive educational environment.

Contracts may specify the start and end dates of the teaching commitment, allowing for a comprehensive evaluation of the teacher’s performance and the school’s needs. This timeframe provides stability for both parties, enabling educators to plan their professional commitments while allowing schools to assess and renew contracts based on performance and evolving requirements. The Basic Elements of a Teacher Agreement Contract are the Following:

1. definition of position/teaching responsibilities.

Tasks, duties, and responsibilities that the teacher is expected to perform besides academic activities. These include out-of-class activities such as field trips and seminars, extracurricular activities, sponsoring other kinds of student activities that are under the supervision of the school administrator. The teacher is also expected to work alongside and cooperate with the staff, his (or her) co-faculty members, and the school administrator. You may also see  job agreement contract

2. Employment Period/Length of Agreement

Agreement contract should indicate date of validity and applicability from the date of signing until the length of expiry, which is usually 1 year from the date when the contract was first signed. Depending on the teacher’s performance, the administrator together with the board of trustees of the academic institution may offer a renewal of contract. However, if the teacher decides not to continue after his or her contract has expired, he or she may give a written notice prior to the renewal of the contract. You may also see  renovation contract samples .

3. Compensation/Benefits

Agreement contract should include the salary of the teacher in words and figures. This includes the base pay and method of payment whether monthly or hourly basis plus overtime work. Benefit package may include health, dental, and other insurance packages. You may also see  payment contract

Other elements may be included including termination with just cause and severance terms that may apply in such incidents.
