Courtesy, in fact, springs from good parentage, nobility of mind, and a gentle heart. To be more precise, doing one’s duty in a consummate manner displays courtesy. “Courtesy costs nothing but pays a huge dividend” is an apt maxim which has been guiding mankind through all the stages of civilization.” A man without a sense of courtesy” says the great essayist and moral teacher, Francis Bacon, “is an animal with human form.”

Courtesy is a term which can be explained and interpreted in various ways. Courtesy, as a matter of fact, is a term that embraces every walk of life and concerns all of us. Each of us is normally bound with one or other forms of curtest. We have to show courtesy, on one part to elders while they, on their part too, maintain certain principles of courtesy to be extended to their young ones. That is why the cult of courtesy is governed by the principle of “give and take”.

There are numerous instances of showing courtesy to others very simple and easy causing you absolutely no difficulty on strain. For example, if you are traveling in a bus which is packed with people and you have got seat but a lady is standing. It is the principle of courtesy that you should offer her your seat, no matter whether she accepts your invitation or not.

Another form of courtesy which is generally ignored by us is that of “thanking” and saying “Please” If someone offers you a cup of tea, before you accept it, you should say “thank you.” Even if you do not want to drink it, you should say.” Thank you, but I do not drink tea.” Similarly people also refuse to use the word “Please” which as a matter of fact costs nothing. It also has a tremendous impact on the other person.

Courtesy and pride is a word which has comprehensive meanings. Courtesy means ”use of excellent, gentle and politeness in his behavior while dealing with others and the person who shows such behavior, is called courteous man” A courteous person has tender feelings and good wishes. He is always polite and pleasant to others. He never behaves harshly and does not injure anyone,s feelings. Christian Nestell Bovee declares it’s uniqueness  in the following words;

Courtesy deals with manners. Good manners spread love, affection, and kindness and win others’hearts and make sincere friends. Courtesy brings decency and politeness. It nourishes good wishes for others. A courteous person bears good manners for others. He is pleasant and polite to everybody. Francis Bacon highlights this concept in the following words; ‘ ‘If a man is gracious and courteous to strangers, it shows he is a citizen of the world” Ralph Waldo Emerson declares;

” LIFE IS SHORT, BUT THERE IS ALWAYS ENOUGH TIME FOR COURTESY”

There are golden words for this concept: ”Think good, wish good, speak good and do good” Courtesy is a sacred emotion. It is a great blessing and endowment of Allah Almighty. A courteous person is liked and loved by all. A courteous person remains very popular among his friends and relatives. The well- behaved courteous people are the foundation of a good society and nation.The Holy Prophet (SAW) says:

”THE BEST AMONGST YOU IS THE ONE WHOSE MANNERS ARE THE BEST”

The saying shows the importance of courtesy. The Holy Prophet (SAW) himself showed a high degree of courtesy throughout his life. The Holy Prophet (SAW) gave great importance to courtesy. The Holy Prophet (SAW) condemned irrational attitude in these words; ”Do not inflict injury, nor repay one’s injury” A courteous person always shuns bad ways and follows the right one. Men have been created for perfection. The Holy Quran exhorts in these words;

”YOU ARE THE BEST OF PEOPLE EVOLVED FOR MANKIND, ENJOINING WHAT IS RIGHT, FORBIDDING WHAT IS WRONG”

A courteous man is kind and polite to everyone. He adopts good and decent manners all the time. He always respects of feelings of others. He never teases or disturbs anybody. Hazrat Ali (R.A) says; ”Meet others with smiling face, It is the very first good to others . courtesy earns good social and mutual contacts. When we say to others ”salaam” it means ”May Allah keep you in safety” In fact, we pray for the safety of the other and get the same in return. If we have good wishes for others, naturally others will also regard our sentiments and feelings. A courteous person earns great fame, even without spending a penny.

It teaches us great values. It teaches us to be ready to help others. It encourages us to join hands with those who may be in trouble. They may be sick, old or depressed. Aristotle has said: ”The goodness of good man shines through his deeds” We should not bear malice and ill-will in our hearts. We should work for the betterment of others. We should develop friendly and cordial relations with others. This is possible only through soft and polite conversation. There is a French Proverb:

”TO SPEAK KINDLY DOES NOT HURT THE TONGUE”

The elders, the seniors, and parents should act as a role model of courtesy for the youngsters and children. Teachers can play an important role in making people courteous. The value of courtesy must be kept at the priority level in educational institutions and offices.

Can South Carolina Schools Teach AP African American Studies? It’s Complicated

Schools in South Carolina seeking to offer the new AP African American Studies course this fall must seek direct authorization from the College Board, and ensure their instruction meets college-level standards, after the state department of education rejected the course from its state roster for the 2024-25 school year.

The state agency also did not approve the College Board’s AP Precalculus course, according to a memo sent to superintendents on June 4. It wasn’t approved for its official launch in the 2023-24 school year either, according to the College Board.

The two new courses from the private nonprofit College Board aim to attract a more diverse student body taking AP courses—through which students can be eligible for college credit in high school. Yet efforts to ensure access to these courses have hit roadblocks. The AP African American Studies course faced a tumultuous rollout when in 2023, during the first year of a two-year pilot program, Florida state officials, with the support of Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, banned the course , alleging it defied state legislation restricting how race can be taught in the state’s schools. That same year, Arkansas officials said the course wouldn’t count toward state graduation requirements, leaving districts to decide locally whether to offer it.

Florida, Arkansas, and South Carolina are among 17 states that—through legislation or other means—have restricted how race can be taught in K-12 schools.

In its memo clarifying that no new state course code would be created for AP African American Studies, the South Carolina education agency cited a state budget provision that restricts instruction on race as well as “pending permanent legislation.”

“Additionally, the state’s social studies standards are coming up for their routine cyclical review. As a result, the SCDE has not approved any new statewide social studies courses, instead focusing efforts to ensure future course offerings are aligned both with the soon-to-be-updated standards and state law,” the memo said.

The state did not respond to a request for comment prior to publication on why it also rejected AP Precalculus from the state’s course roster in both the 2023-24 and 2024-25 school years. It is unclear if either of the courses will count toward graduation credits.

“We regret that students and educators won’t receive the full benefits provided by the state as with other AP courses,” read a statement from the College Board.

The new courses remain popular nationally

South Carolina’s education agency did issue a course code for AP African American Studies two years ago, specifically at the request of districts that wished to participate in the pilot program.

Twelve South Carolina schools participated in the second year of the pilot, with nearly 700 schools participating nationally, according to the College Board.

More than 175,000 students nationwide took AP Precalculus during its official launch in the 2023-24 school year, the College Board said. That includes 25 schools in South Carolina that taught it even after the state education agency didn’t approve it for the school year that’s coming to a close this spring.

In the memo sent to superintendents, South Carolina officials said districts could continue to offer AP African American Studies as a “locally-approved honors course.”

As a result, the College Board said it will “authorize South Carolina schools’ African American studies classes as an AP course if those courses meet college-level standards as verified by the AP Program. Schools could mark those courses as Advanced Placement on student transcripts that can be sent to colleges and universities. Students earning qualifying scores on the AP Exam would be eligible for college credit.”

At the Charleston County school district in South Carolina, which participated in the African American studies pilot, schools will “continue to offer the locally board-approved courses including an African American Studies elective course for the 2024-25 school year,” said Andy Pruitt, the district’s communications director.

“Students across the state have access to dual credit opportunities, including Dual Enrollment African American History (HIS 115) and other courses,” he said.

The state did not provide clarification prior to publication on what South Carolina schools could do regarding AP Precalculus.

So far, AP African American Studies and AP Precalculus have been two of the College Board’s most popular courses, the nonprofit said, even in states with restrictions on teaching about race. Students in the AP African American Studies pilot in Kentucky , for instance, have spoken of the personal growth they experienced through the course. Educators in Florida have lauded AP Precalculus as a means to help more students access college-level math in high school.

Historically, South Carolina has paid for the exam fees for all students enrolled in AP courses as well as AP professional development training for teachers, the College Board said. The state also offers all but two of the 39 existing AP courses—the exceptions being AP Japanese and AP Italian.

It is unclear if the state will cover such expenses for local decisions on AP African American Studies and AP Precalculus.
