Pathaan movie review: shah rukh khan and deepika padukone-starrer has finally got what’s needed in a spy thriller -- non-stop action, glamorous leads, the guy who can save the world, a high-octane set piece, and an emo line at a time..

First things first, Bollywood is back. Shah Rukh Khan is back. Hindi movies have been constructing the ‘desi’ equivalents of the Bond-Bourne franchise for a while now. Tiger has been ‘zinda’ in a pacy double-bill, Agent Vinod has done his bit, BellBottom has flexed and flared, but it is ‘Pathaan’ which has got the spy movie-laced-with-heavy-doses-of-patriotism bouncing off the screen, with Shah Rukh Khan acing the action avatar, flaunting the floppy-hair-glinting-aviators-eight packs (or is it twelve?) look.

That’s because it has finally cracked the requirements of an action movie — non-stop action, leavened by glamorous leads, topped by the guy who can save the world, a high-octane set piece and an emo line at a time.

Bonus: the very svelte Deepika Padukone , matching SRK stride for stride, giving stiff competition to Katrina Kaif , who kicked serious ass in Tiger 2. There’s also Dimple Kapadia, building on her blink-and-miss-role in Christopher Nolan’s ‘Tenet’, as the foxy Moneypenny equivalent. And the chief antagonist, played by John Abraham , who manages to make the most of his lines.

The plot involves a slew of spies, sardonic RAW chiefs (Ashutosh Rana), evil ISI generals and gun-toting terrorists inhabiting global hotspots. Pakistan is back eyeing Kashmir (it will never learn, will it). One of India’s own, Jim (John Abraham) has gone rogue. Gorgeous ISI agent Rubina (Deepika Padukone) is as at home in a bikini as she is in skin-tight spandex. A deadly virus, much more dangerous than Covid 19, is being cooked up in top-secret labs. There’s clear and present danger, and desh-ke-dushman crawling all over the landscape. But breathe easy, because India’s best and bravest, Pathaan (Shah Rukh Khan) is at hand.

The problem of carrying off a two-and-half hour film is evident in the places where you stifle a yawn (yes, it can happen even when everything is galloping along at break-neck speed). Just so there’s nothing missed out, we have Pathaan and Jim facing off in the air (many helicopters were hurt in the making of this film), skimming over ice-floes and under icy water, chasing each other down twisty roads. There’s some amount of roll-your-eyes silliness, par for the course for this kind of flick. Plus, the third person mention of ‘Pathaan’ starts getting tiresome (kitni baar bologe, yaar). Trust us, we got it the first time.

But the slack is gathered up quickly enough: an entire train is commandeered in the service of a special featuring Pathaan and a keffiyeh-sporting spy whose trademark moves had the audience roaring. And then there is that song which created such a controversy weeks before it hit the theatres. There really is nothing in it that we haven’t seen before (YRF songs-on-beaches should rightfully be a separate Bollywood sub-genre) but there’s no denying that Pathaan and Rubina swaying and narrowing their eyes at each other on a Spanish beach, is more a hot proposition than a potato. But let me reassure those worried: nothing besharam happens, sadly, even with nothing between them but a gun.

The film comes at a time when Bollywood, and SRK have been under siege. It’s notable how the star doesn’t go down the Rahul/Raj route which would have been safer in these times. He’s out, loud and proud, claiming his roots, as well as his professional identity built up assiduously over a good thirty years. To that end, writers Sridhar Raghavan and Abbas Tyrewala come up with lines in service of both the real and real character : meta, and fun.

‘Pathaan’ is that sateek jawaab of this beleaguered pathaan, who manages multiple feats in his come-back after a clutch of medium-bad to terrible films : gives it those ones to the #BoycottBollywood brigade, pulls off the dishy-and-dishevelled look rippling those abs, give us a laugh-out-loud moment ( I won’t ruin it for you, but it involves a line from an early SRK character, also in a YRF film, which would have become eminently meme-worthy if memes were a thing those days) and saves Bharat Mata.

On top of the box office success, critics also loved the movie, with it sitting at 89% positive on Rotten Tomatoes, while the audience agreed, rating it at an average of 85% positive. It earned 15 Filmfare Awards nominations, including Best Film, Best Director, and Best Actor, but it only won two — one for Best Action and the other for Best Special Effects.

Chopsticks (2019)

Rajma Chawal (2018)

When Raj's wife dies, he moves back to his old home, and his son, a guitarist, resents him for the move, taking him away from his friends, band, and his life. However, when his father steals the identity of a girl on Facebook and connects with his son while posing as her, they learn more about each other, but the deception could ruin their relationship once and for all.

While the movie didn't win any awards, it was a popular festival hit , premiering at the BFI London Film Festival in 2018 before moving over to Netflix. The film also has a great musical score by Bollywood regular, Irshad Kamil, and is performed by Hitesh Sonik.

Badla (2019)

Badla is a mystery thriller that focuses on a murder and a woman who claims she is innocent. Naina is a young, successful business executive who ends up arrested when her secret lover is murdered . When she hires a high-profile defense attorney, he explains there is a witness who will incriminate her in the murder. However, she claims she was blackmailed, and she was called to the hotel where her lover's dead body was. However, the attorney knows she is lying about something and sets out to find the truth.

The movie was a huge success, released in theaters where it made $17 million worldwide on a $4.6 million budget (via Bollywood Hungama ). It was also in the mix for awards, picking up four nominations at the Filmfare Awards. Taapsee Pannu also won Best Actress at the 2020 Zee Cine Awards for her performance.

Darlings (2022)

A dark comedy movie by director jasmeel k. reen.

Darlings is a dark comedy released on Netflix in 2022 and was one of the most successful Bollywood movies upon its release on the streaming service. The movie is about domestic abuse and a woman who finally stands up to her tormentor in the most horrific way possible. Alia Bhatt plays Badru, a woman whose husband Hamza (Vijay Varma) has gotten drunk and beaten her for years. When he goes too far and beats her while she is pregnant, causing a miscarriage, Badru and her mother plot their revenge.

Originally set to be a theatrical release, Netflix instead picked it up and made it a streaming exclusive. It ended up with more than 10 million hours streamed on its opening weekend (via BBC ). Reviews were mostly positive, and Darlings ended up a massive success in the awards season. It won five awards from 11 nominations at the Filmfare OTT Awards, as well as the Best Feature Film Award at the Bollywood Hungama India Entertainment Awards.

Dev.D (2009)

A romance bollywood movie by director anurag kashyap.

Dev.D is an interesting Bollywood movie on Netflix, as it is a romance film that is split into three parts. Each section is based on one of the characters involved in the story - Paro is a young woman whose childhood sweetheart is Dev, Chandra is a student who is involved in a sex scandal, and Dev is Paro's ex who believes untrue rumors about Paro, which ends their relationship. The movie is based on the classic character of Chandramukhi from the 1917 Bengali novel Devdas .

The movie was a critical success, with the dividing of chapters similar to the films of Quentin Tarantino. It was also a success at the end of the year, winning the 2009 National Film Awards honor for Best Music Direction. At the 55th Filmfare Awards, it won six awards with nine nominations, including Best Actress for Mahie Gill and Best Supporting Actress for Kalki Koechlin.

Pagglait (2021)

A comedy drama bollywood movie by director umesh bist.

Pagglait is a black comedy drama that was a Netflix exclusive in 2021. The movie stars Sanya Malhotra as Sandhya, a young widow who is struggling to deal with her lack of feelings after the death of her husband just five months after they got married. The movie finds dark comedy in her predicament thanks to her quirky relatives and a shocking discovery she makes about her late husband. Though criticized by some for finding humor in death, the film's heart is in the right place.

The movie received positive reviews, but its real success came with its awards. Pagglait got three nominations from the Filmfare OTT Awards, winning for Best Supporting Actor. However, its biggest success came at the FOI Online Awards. It earned 12 nominations there and won five awards, including Best Supporting Actor, Best Dialogues, Best Original Song, and Best Lyricist.

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara , also known as ZNMD , is a 2011 Hindi-language Bollywood movie that stars an ensemble cast in a coming-of-age story. Three childhood friends reunite for a road trip to Spain . Each friend has a different reason for their trip and during the trip, each of them chooses a dangerous sport for them to take part in. The movie was a huge success for both critics (88%) and audiences (86%) on Rotten Tomatoes.

While the movie had great reviews and was popular with the viewers, it was even bigger when it came to accolades. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara picked up 74 nominations across the world and won 35 total awards. This included 12 Filmfare nominations with six wins, including Best Film and Best Director. The Bollywood movie on Netflix also picked up 13 nominations at the International Indian Film Academy Awards, winning nine of them.

Going ape for another ‘Apes’ movie.

‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’

The latest in this sci-fi series follows a group of rebels as they face off against an authoritarian ruler who has twisted the peaceful teachings of a previous leader.

There’s a knowing sense that all this has happened before, and all this will happen again. That’s what makes “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” powerful, in the end. It probes how the act of co-opting idealisms and converting them to dogmas has occurred many times over. What’s more, it points directly at the immense danger of romanticizing the past, imagining that if we could only reclaim and reframe and resurrect history, our present problems would be solved.

A thermal thriller that’s hot and cold.

‘aggro dr1ft’.

This hallucinatory romp directed by Harmony Korine conveys the journey of an assassin entirely through thermal imaging with added digital effects.

Whether it’s the thermal imaging or the augmentation, the visual style renders eyes practically invisible, leaving the actors without an important means of communication. … That absence might account for why “Aggro Dr1ft” is so unengaging on a narrative level, but the monotony might also have to have something to do with the protagonist, a hit man extraordinaire who is also (gasp) a family man. The world’s greatest assassin has been saddled with the world’s most sophomoric internal monologue. “I am a solitary hero. I am alone. I am a solitary hero. Alone,” he mumbles.

Think ‘On the Road,’ but for Gen-Z.

‘gasoline rainbow’.

Five teenagers embark on a road trip to a “party at the end of the world” and encounter many fellow misfits along the way in the latest from filmmakers Bill and Turner Ross.

There’s an uncommon sweetness to this film, which is less about running away from something and more about discovering the road of life is littered with goodness, if you know where to look. There’s a loose, languorous quality to “Gasoline Rainbow,” which the Rosses shot using a mostly improvised format, a collaboration between actors and filmmakers. It feels like a home movie, or a documentary — a capture of a slice of life in which there’s no plot other than whatever happens on the road ahead.

A destination wedding that goes nowhere.

‘mother of the bride’.

At a surprise last-minute wedding, the mother of the bride (Lana, played by Brooke Shields) gets another surprise when she discovers that her daughter is engaged to the son of her ex-beau, Will (Benjamin Bratt).

“Mother of the Bride” is directed by Mark Waters (“Mean Girls”) with an apparent allergy to verisimilitude. Early on, we are told that the opulent Thai ceremony will be bankrolled by Emma’s company (she’s an intern) and livestreamed to “millions of eyes.” These fantasies of pomp and circumstance often serve to make Lana and Will’s budding romance feel like a B-story to the action — although that may be a blessing when the best screwball gag this movie can muster is a pickleball shot to the groin.

Chris Pine goes off the deep end.

In Chris Pine’s directorial debut, he plays a pool cleaner who is enlisted to help uncover a mysterious water heist.

The sure-why-not plot, modeled on the California water grab in “Chinatown,” is less interesting than the charismatic cast that rambles along with Pine on his excellent adventure. Pine’s yarn was savaged when it premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, but the sour response is a bit like getting mad at a golden retriever for rolling around in the grass.

Small drama, big stars.

Seeking asylum, a young Nigerian woman (Letitia Wright of “Black Panther”) navigates the complications of applying for permanent residency in Ireland in this drama from writer-director Frank Berry. Josh O’Connor of “Challengers” also stars.

At the beauty salon where she works, Aisha’s rightly cagey as she listens to her customers. But at the shelter, she turns warm, when she gives makeovers to fellow immigrants. As he did for his award-winning prison film, “Michael Inside,” Berry used nonprofessional actors with intimate experience of the system — here, Ireland’s International Protection Office, which processes asylum applications — he wanted to depict. It’s a gesture that keeps the film from lapsing into melodrama.

Bonus review: A rural throuple

It’s not immediately apparent how courtly intrigue figures in “A Prince” (in theaters) , Pierre Creton’s spellbinding French pastoral drama, though sex, death and domination hang palpably in the film’s crisp, Normandy air.

Creton looks to the divine powers and chivalric codes that fuel swords-and-shields epics like “Game of Thrones,” but whittles these elements down to a mysterious essence. Eventually, the film shifts into explicitly sexual and mythological terrain with a B.D.S.M. edge.

The story is slippery by design, loosely tracking the gay coming-of-age of an apprentice gardener, Pierre-Joseph. Throughout the film, a series of wordless and seductively austere tableaux, he forms bonds with various individuals in his rural community. Multiple narrators speak in retrospect, as if looking back from the afterlife at the characters onscreen.

Pierre-Joseph eventually comes to form a throuple with Alberto and Adrien, his mentors. The naked bodies of these much older gentleman appear suggestively weathered next to their younger lover’s sprightly form. Yet there is no mention of taboo. That passion could bloom in such spontaneous and unexpected forms is part of this enigmatic film’s potency.
