Here are a few of my favorite biographies for upper elementary .

Who is j.k. rowling.

This 105 page biography details the life of Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling from childhood to successful author in adulthood. Rowling’s story teaches students that perseverance truly pays off as the author faced writing rejection well into adulthood. Since her initial rejection, Rowling has become a household name with her popular series of books, movies, and merchandise.

Fantastic Kids: Malala Yousafzai

The story of Malala Yousafzai has inspired young and old. Malala became a target of the Taliban in Pakistan and was nearly murdered for attending school. She has been an outspoken activist around the world for girls and education. For gifted readers, try the young reader’s edition of her autobiography meant for grade 6 and up.

Rosa Parks: My Story

During Black History month , my students complete a research project on important people who shaped African American rights and influenced history. This project, however, can be completed all year-round. One powerful African American Civil Rights leader was Rosa Parks. She is well-known for refusing to give up her seat to a white person on a public bus. Parks’ story is told in her own words in this autobiography, complete with primary source photographs.

DK Biography: Abraham Lincoln

The U.S. Presidents Research Project is one of my students’ favorites. Learning about our country’s leaders helps them understand where we came from and where we are headed. One of the most iconic presidents, Abraham Lincoln, is showcased in this paperback biography that contains photographs, timelines, and other high interest text features.

Albert Einstein (Giants of Science)

One of our favorite biography series to use with research curriculum and science class is the Giants of Science series. This biography focuses on fascinating genius, Albert Einstein, his experiments, ideas, and hair. Vocabulary is challenging but accessible for upper elementary students. Your students will love reading how Einstein struggled in school and succeeded despite his issues in traditional school. Many students will relate and be inspired to keep pursuing their dreams.

These five favorite biographies for upper elementary will have your students reading and researching. Put these on your shelf, or explore these additional favorites!

How to Make a Lapbook

How to make a lap book - a free lapbook template.

Lap Books are everywhere!  If you like hands-on projects, interactive notebooks, or creative ways to engage your students in learning, then you may want to give lapbooks a try. Today’s post is on  how to make a lap book with just a few simple items!  Plus, download a  FREE Book Report Lapbook Template  for teachers and homeschooling families for use with your students!

When I first heard of lapbooks and saw some samples that other teachers had made, I was afraid it would be too time-consuming and project-heavy without a focus on real learning.  I was wrong .  (Don’t tell my husband I said that…he may write it down for future reference!) 😉

Lap books do not have to be huge, multi-paged contraptions. They are actually quite  simple  to make. Here is how to create a basic lap book, using  ONE file folder . 😀 I’m a simple gal at heart!

Materials needed:

  • 1 file folder
  • 1 sheet colored construction paper (or cardstock)
  • colored pencils, crayons, extra paper

Place the file folder open flat on the table.

STEP  2:

Fold each side of the folder inward toward the center fold. Crease strongly on the 2 new folds. (It should look like a French Door.)

kiki's classroom biography lapbook

Cut a piece of heavy construction paper or card stock and glue it to the inside back wall of the lap book. This not only reinforces and strengthens the back wall, but it also adds some color to the project.

Add interactive notes, titles, research, and any desired features to your lap book.

That’s all there is to it! Simple, easy, and fun. There are so many different projects for which you can use lapbooks – book reports, famous person project, history report, all about me, math display, creative writing project, and so much more!

What is Lapbooking? Purpose of Lapbooks and How to Make Them

Rebecca Devitt

Lapbooking: What It Is, The Purpose, and How to #Lapbook.

When I first heard about lapbooking, I thought it was a great concept. It’s a way parents can inject fun into a boring curriculum and get children to be more hands-on. Lapbooking can stimulate children to think differently. It’s also a great way of gently testing their knowledge of the material you’ve just covered.

Rebbecca Devitt

I hope you enjoy reading this blog post. If you want to do my course on how to homeschool, click here .

Let’s learn more about it below.

Affiliate links used in this article help support my little homeschool family. Thanks in advance 🙂

What is Lapbooking

Lapbooking is a  homeschooling method  that involves children making mini-books of the concepts they learn in their lessons. The mini-books are collated in a larger folder of other mini-books on the same topic.

What is an Example of Lapbooking?

An example of Lapbooking would be if children were to make a mini-book of the:

  • animals that live around a particular geographical area (i.e., Dodo, Anteater, Badger)
  • gods worshipped in ancient times (i.e. Zeus, Hera, Aphrodite) – see the picture below for this example
  • weather patterns throughout the year (i.e., flooding, drought, desert, and forest regions)

Then, they would collate all these smaller books into a larger book or folder named ‘Studies about Egypt.’

And this would be your lapbook! (Here are some  helpful Pinterest examples of Egyptian lapbooks .)

What is the Purpose of Lapbooking?

The purpose of lapbooking is to:

  • gently test children’s knowledge of the subject,
  • reinforce concepts taught in books or textbooks, and
  • get children to use their hands as they learn.

As such, these mini-books make lessons more enjoyable and change the pace a little more so children can learn differently.

How to Lapbook

You can  lapbook by following these steps :

  • Grab a book or a folder with several thick papers inside (either thick paper or cardboard).
  • Name the book with colorful markers (i.e., Studies of Egypt)
  • Find some printer paper. Cut these into rectangular shapes of around 10cm x 20 cm.
  • Place these rectangular pieces on each other and fold them in half.
  • Staple along the fold.
  • You’ve now made a mini-book.
  • Get children to fill these books with the concepts students learn and glue them into your book/folder to make a larger book.

You can also paste in relevant pictures with captions beneath them. Or you can make a little pocket and get children to cut out notes or pictures and put these into these pockets.

What is the Place of Lapbooking in a Homeschool Situation?

Many  homeschool curricula  use this method to help children reinforce concepts they learn in their lessons.

Indeed, I first learned about lapbooking when I studied the eclectic curriculum called  Tapestry of Grace .

Along with Charlotte Mason, Classical and Unit Study methods, they used this method to help children learn new things and consolidate old lessons .

Lapbooking can also be an excellent method to learn a subject no one teaches.

For example, if your child was interested in Boeing airplanes, you could get them to make a lapbook of:

  • the different versions of Boeings (747, 737, 787 max),
  • photographs of Boeings
  • how airplanes work
  • a black box, and how they work

Lapbooks are a great way to  collate information on exciting topics with  no written subject available .

Lapbooks  from  Knowledge Box Central

Another way to incorporate some fun into your  homeschool  is by using purchased lapbooks.

These lapbooks can be a  beautiful keepsake and a great way of reviewing material  after completing a course.

These are a great option if you don’t have time to get your children started with a lap book!

You may be a  working homeschool mom  and need a break.

These are a great option!

Buy lapbooks from  Knowledge Box Central here .

What are Some Homeschool Methods That Use Lapbooking?

A lot of  homeschool methods  use lapbooks in their curriculums.

This is especially common in  Unit Studies homeschool curriculum programs .

Because  unit studies  learn by topics rather than subjects , lapbooks are a great way to summarize and review the topic in the future.

Charlotte Mason curricula  also sometimes employ lapbooks to help children learn.

Potential Downsides to Labooking

If you have older children, they can do a lot of labooking activities on their own.

But, a downside of lapbooking, especially if you want an  easy homeschool , is that  it takes time to organize materials .

Parents have to  like  crafting and sitting with children to do these .

If children are very young, this sort of learning can consume time.

Yes, it’s excellent for  interest-based learning .

But it’s heavy on mom’s time.

Buying lapbooks  is an excellent way to get past this, but a fair bit of cutting and pasting is still involved!

Most adults don't particularly want to relive their schooling experience on a daily basis. They would gladly move on to a new life devoid of homework and teachers. Very, very few adults will passionately blog about their schooling some 15 years after graduating. This makes Rebecca Devitt somewhat unique. As it happens, she was homeschooled. And she loved it. Still does. And she wishes every kid could get a taste of homeschooling at its very best. Her website How Do I Homeschool , is a springboard for parents to see what a life of homeschooling could be for both them & their children. When she's not blogging Rebecca is still homeschooling her-adult-self by learning Latin, growing weird vegetables and most importantly looking after her two children Luke & Penny. She has a husband Tristan and is a participant at Wollongong Baptist Church. She's also written a book about why parents should homeschool called 'Why on Earth Homeschool' .

Lapbooks are super easy to make work beautiful with unit studies and are a great way to record everything kids have learned about a subject. So today I’m sharing with you a quick guide to lapbooking. You’ll learn how to make a lapbook, and you’ll find over 90 free lapbook printables for you to use in your homeschool! Plus, download free lapbook templates for DIY lapbooking at the bottom of this post.

Lapbooking: How to Lapbook text with image of girl doing homework

What is a Lapbook?

In order to make a lapbook, kids create small activity books, fold paper, and answer questions to create their books. Then all the activity books are gathered and glued onto manila folders which fit on a child’s lap. Hence the name lapbook.

They’re so easy that even non-crafty moms can make them. All you need are some manila folders, templates, colored pencils or crayons, scissors, and glue.

Lapbooks are Perfect for Visual Learners

Lapbooks are great if you have a visual learner. If your child enjoys creating things like my hands-on, artsy daughter – they will thrive with lapbooking. She loves working with her hands, drawing, cutting, gluing, crafting – all of it. And she really is a visual learner, so lapbooks are the perfect addition to her learning!

Lapbooks are a great way to help children visually see the layout of a book, learn more about an animal, country, and more.

If you have a visual learner like mine, I’m sure they will love putting together lapbooks. And the best part is you can literally make a lapbook for any subject, book, or topic. And all it really takes is some file folders, a printer, scissors, glue, and a pencil.

How to Make a Lapbook

All you need are some templates you can use to create your own, or even some you can type in for multiple kids (to save for the future). But if you’re new to lapbooking, like me, you can find a very helpful series here on Homeschool Share. We have gathered a huge list for you to get started.

All you need to do is download and print the templates and have a pile of manila folders for the children to use. Your children will need colored pencils or crayons, scissors, and glue. Add in a few books so the kids can do some research to answer the questions and you’re good to go.

Your kids will have fun making their lapbooks and showing the books off to grandparents.

90+ Free Lapbook Printables

Here are a bunch of lapbooking printables on many different topics to help you teach your kids. You’ll find lapbooks on language arts, math, history, geography, and more. Your kids will have a great time as they study these topics and create their lapbooks.

Celebrating native american heritage month, the quick and simple strategy i use to grade papers | making it work, what is a lapbook and why they are so magical.

What is a Lapbook?

A lapbook is an organized, creative inter-active way for students to show what they have learned about a particular subject. These are really popular in the homeschooling scene and are also amazing in the classroom.

I absolutely love teaching with lapbooks! When students use lapbooks they are more likely to retain the information they’ve learned. This is because Lapbooks can take an interactive, multi-sensory approach.

Multi-sensory Approach

Lapbooks don’t create a multi-sensory all on their own but with a little teacher intervention, you can make it happen. An Orton-Gillingham multi-sensory approach his 3 main factors: Kinesthetic/ Tactile, Visual, and Auditory. These are three learning styles you will need to cover to use this approach. This approach is beneficial to all students but is especially beneficial to students with ADHD, ADD and Dyslexia. Using a lapbook to create this approach is super easy. You are probably already using the OG ( Orton-Gillingham) approach and don’t even know it!!

The Teachers’ Process

Black History month is approaching so I’ll use this Barack Obama lapbook as an example. This is a small section of a bigger Black History Lapbook study unit. This is how I cover all 3 multi-sensory approaches using this lapbook.

Auditory: We will begin by reading a book about Barack Obama, You could read Who is Barack Obama by Robert Edwards.

Visual: We will post the vocabulary words so students can see them.

Kinesthetic/tactile: Students will be writing down facts and information that they learn.

Here is where the magic happens! With your students, you have already done all 3 of the Multi-Sensory approaches with them as you have taught them about Barack Obama. Now THEY will do these 3 sensory approaches on their own and in several ways using this lapbook.

The best part about using lapbooks is the magic will happen naturally .For example, “Mrs. E. I don’t remember when Barack Obama was born?” No worries ” Grab Who is Barack Obama from the bookshelf and look for the date in his biography.” Watch this. The student will find the book and read until he finds the information he needs, if he reads the book out loud he will have covered the visual and the auditory sensories. Next, he will need to write down the information he found. This covers the tactile part. See, Magic! In one small part of this lapbook he as already used all 3 of the multi-sensories. The magic is he will do this over and over and over again! This ensures he will be more likely to retain the information he’s learned.

The Students’ Process

Students may need to seek out some additional information. They may need to go back to the books we have already read about him or find videos about him online. This covers auditory and visual. Creating the actual project becomes the Kinesthetic/ tactile part. Throughout this lapbook process, they will be creating, making and researching information to complete this lapbook. They are visually looking at books and videos, reading the information (auditory) and tacitly creating a finished project that visually represents what they learned. Here are some common examples of using the OG approach with a lapbook.

Kinesthetic

  • Cutting out each part of their lap books
  • folding their file folders to create the lapbook
  • folding flaps, of pockets or mini books that fit inside the lapbook
  • Listening to videos to find more information
  • Listening to classmates as they collaborate about the project
  • Rereading books and text aloud to gather facts
  • looking at pictures to determine what he looks like
  • looking at words vocabulary words that were used in this unit
  • having their own set of vocabulary words for their lapbook, that they can look at

A few other things I love about lapbooks are that they are so diverse. They can be created in small bits or all in one afternoon. You can add things, or take them away. You can create them from scratch or buy them premade. Lapbooks could be created as a group project or an individual project. You can use them as a unit study for literally any subject.

What if you could cover several objects with one project? You can with lapbooks. This is why lapbooks are so beneficial. You can use them to cover several objectives and be ensured that the student have actually learned the objectives taught because when they finish their lapbook they will have proof of just that! And if you are still unsure, ask your students or better yet allow them to share with the class. They will be so excited to share what they’ve learned.

I have used lapbooks, for math, science, social studies, language arts and , grammar foundations. You could even create an All About Me lapbook as a back to school project. The options for using a lapbook are literally endless. Lapbook ideas can be found all over the internet or just check out teaherspayteachers.

The biggest benefit

Students love creating these. When they are done, they are proud of the work they’ve completed. Students are excited to share what they have learned with classmates, teachers, parents basically anyone who will listen. These make great displays and the littles love bringing everyone to see what they worked so hard on. Another amazing option is all the lapbooks don’t have to all look exactly the same you can diversify these for students who need more support or add something complex for students who need more of a challenge. This ensure everyone has success and a product they can be proud of.

My hope is that whether you are a classroom teacher, or a homeschool parent, that you would try lapbooks using the OG approach with your students, or children. You will be amazed at how much they learn and retain using this process.
