Prey Movie Review: ప్రిడేటర్ ఫ్రాంచైజ్‌ ప్ర‌పంచ‌వ్యాప్తంగా అభిమానులు ఉన్నారు. యాక్ష‌న్ క‌థాంశాల‌తో రూపొందిన ప్రిడేట‌ర్ సినిమాలు ప్రేక్ష‌కుల్ని అమితంగా అల‌రించాయి.. ఈ సిరీస్‌లో ఇప్ప‌టివ‌ర‌కు నాలుగు సినిమాలొచ్చాయి. ప్రిడేట‌ర్ సినిమాల‌కు ప్రీక్వెల్‌గా రూపొందిన చిత్రం ప్రే. ఈ ప్రీక్వెల్‌కు డాన్ ట్ర‌చెన్ బ‌ర్గ్ ద‌ర్శ‌క‌త్వం వ‌హించాడు. డిస్నీ ప్ల‌స్ హాట్ స్టార్ లో ఈ సినిమా రిలీజైంది. సైన్స్ ఫిక్ష‌న్ యాక్ష‌న్ ఎంట‌ర్‌టైన‌ర్‌గా రూపొందిన ఈ సినిమా ఎలా ఉందంటే.

1719 నాటి క‌థ‌...

1719 కాలంలో కొమాంచి తెగ‌కు చెందిన న‌రు అనే యువ‌తికి వైద్యంలో ప్రావీణ్యం ఉంటుంది. ఆ తెగ‌కు చెందిన ఇత‌ర అమ్మాయిల‌కు భిన్నంగా వేట‌లో గొప్ప పేరు తెచ్చుకోవాల‌ని న‌రు క‌ల‌లుకంటుంది. ఆమె అన్న‌య్య తాబే తో పాటు మిగిలిన వారంద‌రూ న‌రు మాట‌ల‌ను హేళ‌న చేస్తుంటారు. వారు నివ‌సిస్తున్న అడ‌విలోకి ప్రిడేట‌ర్ అడుగుపెడుతుంది జంతువుల్ని, మ‌నుషుల్ని చంపేస్తుంటుంది.

ఆ ప్రిడేట‌ర్ ఆన‌వాళ్ల‌ను ప‌సిగ‌ట్టిన న‌రు తెగ‌లోని అంద‌రిని హెచ్చ‌రిస్తుంది. కానీ ఎవ‌రు ఆమె మాట‌ల‌ను న‌మ్మ‌రు. ఆ ప్రిడేట‌ర్‌ను హ‌త‌మార్చాల‌ని అనుకున్న న‌రు ప్ర‌య‌త్నం ఫ‌లించిందా? త‌న‌కంటే ఎన్నో రేట్లు బ‌ల‌మైన శ‌త్రువుతో న‌రు ఎలాంటి పోరాటం చేసింది? ప్రిడేట‌ర్‌తో జ‌రిగిన పోరులో న‌రు అన్న‌య్య తాబే ప్రాణాల‌ను కోల్పోయాడా? న‌రు శ‌క్తి సామ‌ర్థ్యాల‌ను కొమాంచి తెగ గుర్తించిందా? లేదా? అన్న‌ది ప్రే సినిమా మిగ‌తా క‌థ‌.

పాయింట్ ఒక్క‌టే...(Prey Movie Review)

ప్రిడేట‌ర్ సినిమాల‌న్నీ దాదాపు ఒకే పాయింట్‌తో సాగుతాయి. కంటికి క‌నిపించ‌ని శ‌త్రువుతో హీరోహీరోయిన్లు సాగించే పోరాటంతో ముడిప‌డి తెర‌కెక్కుతుంటాయి. ఎన్ని ఆటంకాలు ఎదురైనా చివ‌ర‌కు క్లైమాక్స్‌లో హీరో విజ‌యాన్ని సాధించ‌డం అన్న‌ది కామ‌న్ గా క‌నిపిస్తుంది.

ఇప్ప‌టివ‌ర‌కు వ‌చ్చిన ప్రిడేట‌ర్ సినిమాల్లో ఇదే చూపించారు. అయితే రీసెంట్‌గా వ‌చ్చిన ప్రిడేట‌ర్ సిరీస్ సినిమాల్లో యాక్ష‌న్ బాగుంద‌నే పేరొచ్చిన ఎమోష‌న్ మాత్రం వ‌ర్క‌వుట్ కాలేదు. ఈ ప్రీక్వెల్‌లో ఆ త‌ప్పిదాన్ని రిపీట్‌ చేయ‌కుండా జాగ్ర‌త్త‌ప‌డ్డాడు ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు. ఎమోష‌న్స్‌, యాక్ష‌న్ రెండింటికి క‌థ‌లో స‌మ‌ప్రాధాన్య‌త‌నిచ్చాడు.

తెలివి ముఖ్యం...

అమ్మాయి అనే ఒకే కార‌ణంతో త‌న శ‌క్తి సామ‌ర్థ్యాల‌ను చుల‌క‌న చేసిన వారంద‌రికి న‌రు ఎలా స‌మాధానం చెప్పింద‌న్న‌ది ప‌వ‌ర్‌ఫుల్‌గా సినిమాలో చూపించాడు ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు డ్రాన్ ట్రాచెన్ బ‌ర్గ్‌. ఓ సీన్‌లో హీరోయిన్ అన్న పులిని చంపుతాడు. కానీ ఆ పులిని చంప‌డానికి హీరోయిన్ ప్లాన్ మొత్తం అమ‌లు చేస్తుంది. ఆ క్రెడిట్ మాత్రం ఆమెకు ఇవ్వ‌కుండా తానే తీసుకుంటాడు. ఆ సీన్‌లో ఎమోష‌న్స్ చ‌క్క‌గా పండాయి.

శ‌త్రువును ఎదుర్కోవ‌డానికి తొంద‌ర‌పాటు కంటే తెలివితేట‌లు ముఖ్యం అంటూ క్లైమాక్స్‌లో చూపించారు. క్లైమాక్స్‌లో వ‌చ్చే యాక్ష‌న్ ఎపిసోడ్స్ సినిమాకు హైలైట్‌గా నిలుస్తాయి. సినిమా మొత్తం ఆట‌వీ ప్రాంతంలోనే సాగుతుంది. గ్రాఫిక్స్ ఎక్కువ‌గానే ఉన్నా ఫారెస్ట్ బ్యాక్‌డ్రాప్ కార‌ణంగా రియ‌లిస్టిక్ ఫీల్ క‌లుగుతుంది. లాజిక్స్ విష‌యంలో జాగ్ర‌త్త‌ప‌డ్డారు ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు. ఒక ర‌కంగా ప్రే లేడీ ఓరియెంటెండ్ యాక్ష‌న్ సినిమా అనుకోవ‌చ్చు.

యాక్ష‌న్ ప్ల‌స్ ఎమోష‌న్స్‌(Prey Movie Review)

ప్రే సినిమాలో ఎమోష‌న్స్‌, యాక్ష‌న్ క‌ల‌బోసిన అమ్మాయిగా అంబెర్ మిడ్‌థండ‌ర్ ఇంప్రెసివ్ యాక్టింగ్‌ను క‌న‌బ‌రిచింది. సినిమా మొత్తం ఆమె క్యారెక్ట‌ర్‌తోనే ముడిప‌డి న‌డుస్తుంది. గ్రాఫిక్స్, యాక్ష‌న్ సీన్స్‌ను డిజైన్ చేసిన తీరు బాగుంది.

హాలీవుడ్‌లో ఏలియన్లకు సంబంధించిన సినిమాలు చూసేవారికి ఏలియన్, ప్రిడేటర్ సిరీస్ గురించి ప్రత్యేకంగా చెప్పాల్సిన అవసరం లేదు. క్రియేచర్ (ఏదైనా వింత జీవి) బేస్డ్ సినిమాల్లో ఇవి ఒక బెంచ్ మార్క్ సెట్ చేశాయి. ఈ సిరీస్‌లో లేటెస్ట్‌గా వచ్చిన సినిమా ‘ప్రే (Prey)’. ఈ సినిమా శుక్రవారం నేరుగా డిస్నీప్లస్ హాట్‌స్టార్ ఓటీటీలో విడుదల అయింది. మరి ఈ సినిమా ఎలా ఉంది? టైం వేస్టా? టైం పాసా?

కథ (Prey Movie Plot): 1719లో జరిగే కథ ఇది. అంటే ఇప్పటివరకు ముందు వచ్చిన ఏలియన్, ప్రిడేటర్ సిరీస్ సినిమాలకు ప్రీక్వెల్ అన్నమాట. నార్త్ అమెరికాలోని గ్రేట్ ఫ్లాట్ ల్యాండ్స్‌లోని తెగల నేపథ్యంలో ఈ సినిమా సాగుతుంది. ఒక ప్రిడేటర్ స్థానికంగా ఉండే జంతువులను, తెగల మనుషులను చంపుతుంది. అక్కడి తెగలోని మనుషులంతా అది అడవి జంతువుల పని అనుకుంటారు. కానీ నరు (ఆంబర్ మిడ్‌థండర్) మాత్రం ఇదేదో వింత జీవి పని అని చెబుతుంది. కానీ వారెవరూ నమ్మరు. దీంతో ఈ విషయాన్ని నిరూపించడానికి నరు ఒంటరిగా బయలుదేరుతుంది. చివరికి ఏం అయింది? ఎంతో బలమైన ప్రిడేటర్‌ని నరు ఒంటరిగా ఎదిరించిందా? ఈ విషయాలు తెలియాలంటే ‘ప్రే’పై ఒక లుక్కేయాల్సిందే.

విశ్లేషణ: ఒక క్రియేచర్ బేస్ట్ సినిమా తీయడం కత్తి మీద సాము లాంటిది. కథ, కథనాలతో పాటు గ్రాఫిక్స్ కూడా పర్ఫెక్ట్‌గా ఉండేలా చూసుకోవాలి. ఒక సినిమాను నేరుగా ఓటీటీకి తీస్తున్నామంటే బడ్జెట్ విషయంలో హాలీవుడ్ స్టూడియోలు చాలా కచ్చితంగా వ్యవహరిస్తాయి. క్వాలిటీ కూడా థియేటర్ సినిమాలకు ఒకలా, ఓటీటీ సినిమాలకు ఒకలా ఉంటుంది. అమెజాన్, నెట్‌ఫ్లిక్స్ వంటి స్టూడియోలకు వీటి నుంచి మినహాయింపు ఇవ్వవచ్చు. ‘ప్రే’లో వింత జీవిని ప్రత్యేకంగా గ్రాఫిక్స్ ద్వారా క్రియేట్ చేయకుండా ఒక మనిషికి మేకప్ వేయడం దగ్గర బడ్జెట్ చాలా సేవ్ అయింది. గ్రాఫిక్స్ ఏ దశలోనూ కంప్లయింట్ చేసేలా ఉండకపోవడం పెద్ద ప్లస్ పాయింట్.

అలాగే సినిమా రన్ టైం కూడా కేవలం ఒక గంటా 39 నిమిషాలు మాత్రమే. దీంతో స్క్రీన్‌ప్లేనే మరింత టైట్‌గా రాసుకున్నారు. ప్రిడేటర్ లాంటి బలమైన ఏలియన్‌కి ఒక యువతి ఒంటరిగా ఎలా ఎదురువెళ్లిందనే అంశాన్ని ఎంతో ఆసక్తికరంగా చూపించారు. ప్రిడేటర్‌ను ఎదుర్కోవడానికి నరు అడవిలోకి వెళ్లినప్పటి నుంచి సినిమా మరింత వేగంగా సాగుతుంది. ప్రిడేటర్‌ను నరు తెలివితో ఎదుర్కునే సన్నివేశాలు ఆకట్టుకుంటాయి.

టెక్నికల్‌గా కూడా ఈ సినిమా అద్భుతంగా ఉంది. దర్శకుడు డాన్ ట్రాచ్‌టెన్‌బర్గ్ సినిమాను అద్భుతంగా తెరకెక్కించారు. జెఫ్ కట్టర్ కెమెరా వర్క్ మనల్ని ఆ కాలానికి తీసుకెళ్తుంది. సారా షానర్ మ్యూజిక్ సినిమా మూడ్‌కు తగ్గట్లు ఉంది. నిర్మాణ విలువలు బాగున్నాయి.

ఇక నటీనటుల విషయానికి వస్తే... నరు పాత్రలో నటించిన ఆంబర్ మిడ్‌థండర్ అందులో ఒదిగిపోయింది. ప్రిడేటర్‌గా కనిపించిన డకోటా బీవర్స్... పాత్రకు కావాల్సిన బాడీ లాంగ్వేజ్‌ను దించేశారు. మిగతా పాత్రధారులందరూ వారి పాత్రలకు న్యాయం చేశారు.

ఓవరాల్‌గా చెప్పాలంటే... ఈ వీకెండ్‌లో ఇంట్లో కూర్చుని మంచి థ్రిల్లింగ్ సినిమా చూడాలంటే ‘ప్రే’ మీకు మంచి ఆప్షన్. డిస్నీప్లస్ హాట్‌స్టార్‌లో ఇంగ్లిష్, హిందీ లాంగ్వేజెస్‌లో ఈ సినిమాను స్ట్రీమ్ చేయవచ్చు.

Prey movie review: The Predator franchise gets a pulse-pounding update that chews up and spits out the Marvel template

Prey movie review: a lean, mean feminist re-imagining of the famously masculine predator franchise, director dan trachtenberg's second feature film is just as good as his first, 10 cloverfield lane..

A survival thriller in more ways than one, Prey brings a female perspective to a famously masculine franchise. Stylistically, tonally, and thematically, it couldn’t be more different from the last entry in the Predator series, a testosterone-fuelled action film directed by Shane Black. Released in 2018, The Predator underperformed at the box office and attracted criticism for — among other things — its (problematic) portrayal of autism. Every minute of Prey feels like an act of rebellion against that film, and in a larger sense, against Hollywood reboot culture in general.

A slap in the face of the ‘go big or go home’ school of thought, the film does for the Predator franchise what Todd Phillips’ Joker did for the Batman movies . As the title suggests, Prey actively flips the narrative on its head. Instead of being the bloated, CGI-fuelled slugfest that we’ve come to expect of sequels, it’s is a lean, character-driven drama. It’s action-packed, but unafraid of silences; it’s woke, but without pandering to minorities. It’s no coincidence then that in the role which would normally be reserved for an Arnold Schwarzenegger type, Prey has slotted a young woman.

Set in the Comanche Nation during the early 1700s, Prey tells the story of Naru, a warrior who discovers that her tribe might be under threat from a mysterious hunter far more formidable than the grizzlies and cougars that they usually encounter. Amber Midthunder stars as the young Naru, who struggles to fit in with her brother and his cocky friends in the dog-eat-dog world that they inhabit. And when they refuse to believe her when she tells them that she’s actually seen the predator on a rampage, she goes on personal a mission to prove to her bullies (but mostly to herself) that she isn’t worthless. That she must be believed.

Midthunder is revelation. She carries the film almost entirely on her shoulders, and is skilled not only in the action sequences — there’s a lot of axe-throwing, skulking around, and hand-to-hand fighting — but also in the many dramatic detours that the story takes. Her relationship with her (over) protective brother, and her canine companion, is particularly memorable. Naru is strong-willed, yet vulnerable; formidable but not infallible. But what makes her so compelling as a character is her lack of self-confidence; I’d imagine many viewers, not just young women, would relate.

Director Dan Trachtenberg, who after helming the delightful 10 Cloverfield Lane — another film that completely upended franchise expectations — found himself attached to project after project that didn’t take off for various reasons. He reasserted himself on television, with the excellent pilot episode of The Boys, and Playtest on Black Mirror. Trachtenberg was revealed as the director of Prey after hushed whispers about the film first began doing the rounds some months ago. It was going to be a prequel, they said, and if you prodded further, you’d hear a tantalising half-truth about the film being in a foreign language.

This isn’t entirely accurate, although Trachtenberg — like some of our own filmmakers — has filmed Prey like a bilingual movie. In addition to the English version, there’s apparently going to be a version entirely in the Comanche language, which is a first, and should be celebrated. But even though the film is dedicated to the Comanche Nation, I’m still not sold on the subtext here. Is it exploitative to set a movie that directly deals with the evisceration of humans at the hands of alien invaders within a community that suffered similar persecution , but in real life?

Naru encounters villainous white settlers in the film’s third act, which suddenly roots the story in a recognisable reality after an hour or so of mostly fantastical world-building. But Trachtenberg handles both elements of the story with a deftness of touch. Prey is both a solid genre picture with a series of imaginatively filmed kill sequences and an inward-looking drama about a young person trying to find her place in the world.

Notice how Trachtenberg holds the camera on his heroine as she walks in and out of her village, and across the vast landscapes around it; he doesn’t turn away from moments of perceived inaction, and understands the importance of tone and atmosphere. Marvel has made mainstream Hollywood filmmakers positively terrified of silences; their movies will invariably insert a quip to offset onscreen discomfort, almost as a defence mechanism. And while this is an okay strategy sometimes, it’s scary when this becomes the default setting, and scarier when it begins to inform moviemaking at large. Shane Black, for instance, appeared to have been expressly instructed to mould his Predator movie into a wise-cracking Marvel adventure targeted at teen boys.

But Prey is like The Revenant meets Apocalypto. Doesn’t that sound brilliant? It’s a pity then that the film has been offloaded to streaming, because this is the kind of big-screen entertainment that we’re starving for.

Prey Movie Review: The best Predator film since the original one

The Arnold Schwarzenegger-starrer Predator (1987), the first instalment in the Predator franchise, is undoubtedly a cult classic action film. Unlike the Alien franchise that had Sigourney Weaver's Ellen Ripley in the lead, with which the Predator series has had crossovers over the years, the Predator franchise has predominantly relied on testosterone-heavy men and their state-of-the-art weaponry. The most iconic image from Predator  is Schwarzenegger's character Dutch sharing an 'epic handshake' with Al Dilon (Carl Weathers), which has become meme fodder over the years. Interestingly, the franchise's latest outing, Prey , despite sticking to the same formula of hunters being hunted, skips the rest of the original and straightforward tropes for a plot with subliminal takeaways that aid in refreshing the 35-year-old franchise while also staying true to its core idea.

Just like the 1987 film, Prey is also the story of a group of people who believe they are the apex predator of their jungle only to discover that they are being hunted for sport by a highly evolved alien with a technologically advanced arsenal. But unlike the first film, which was about a military team with their choppers and automated guns, Prey is based in the Comanche Nation in 1719. Simply put, Prey is the story of how Naru (Amber Midthunder), a young woman, saves her tribe from the clutches of a predator. But the similarities with the series' previous iteration stops there as Prey offers multiple layers as to why Naru going about with her mission is more difficult than the obvious reason - an alien killing machine that can go invisible.

Technically, Prey is a prequel to all the films of the franchise and though we have seen Predators helping ancient humans as flash cuts in the Alien vs Predator films, this is the first time we witness people from the past facing off the alien. Speaking of time, at its heart, Prey is a coming-of-age film as it traverses through the life of Naru who is stuck in a male-dominated society. Given how a person's sex decides whether they become a hunter or a gatherer in that era, Naru tries to prove her mettle by preparing for the kühtaamia, a rite of passage ritual and prepares herself by game hunting and trying to get included in her brother's gang of men who hunt down larger animals. Unsurprisingly, she is retorted with sexist and misogynistic remarks - at one point, some of the young hunters, seeing her following them, quips that their hunt is a short one and they don't need a cook. But, like every other story of an underdog, Naru has to rise to take on the Predator and save her tribe.

Director Dan Trachtenberg, known for making the brilliant 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016), along with Patrick Aison, has proven their writing skills with the way they have shaped Naru's character. Unlike Dutch or Mike from the first two Predator films or the main human characters from the rest of the forgettable entries, we tend to relate and root for Naru, right from the get-go and not wait till she faces her adversary. Similar to the men in her tribe, even her mother offers nothing but skepticism over her endeavours and expects her to collect herbs to make medicines. Interestingly, this mix of abilities grants Naru the braveness to hunt and the knowledge to heal when needed and that ends up becoming her biggest strength. Keeping in tradition with the culture of the Native American tribe and their family values, the film gets its emotional quotient from Naru's relationship with her elder brother Taabe (Dakota Beavers) who is the only one who believes in Naru and ends up becoming her support system. The makers get the casting right and almost the entire cast has Native American ancestry. Interestingly, the film is also available as a dubbed version in the Comanche language.

Coming to what makes this a part of a legacy franchise, we go back to the first two films' trope once again that involves a single Predator going on a killing spree. But what sets Prey apart is how instead of modern weaponry, our heroes are left to defend themselves with bows, arrows and axes. How they put this to use in the warfare makes for some of the best human-Predator fight sequences of the whole franchise. Thankfully, the film is R-rated and this gives them the space to come up with novel ways to behead, disfigure and kill lives in more creative ways that even compete with the Mortal Kombat games. Violence is dialled up to 11 and that's anything but an issue to fans of the genre.

Apart from the pivotal characters, the film also brings in another clan of folks in the form of Frenchmen who detest the Natives but involuntarily end up teaching Naru the art of gunmanship. All of that writing comes in handy in establishing a hero who is only otherwise armed with a tomahawk axe and her trusty dog. Speaking about writing, the film shines with its share of parallel scenes. Naru, in one scene, gets trapped in a bear trap just like her dog and in another scene, she self-medicates the same way the Predator does to its own wounds. The film also pays homage to the first classic by reusing the iconic 'if it bleeds, we can kill it' line. Over the years, we have seen many iterations of the Predators and that's excluding the ones with the mixed DNA of Aliens. Even then, the makers bring in a sense of identity to this one that's played by former basketball player Dane DiLiegro. Apart from the usual cloaking device, bombs and other weapons at its disposal, we also see a new head armour in this Predator . To showcase its status atop the food chain, there's a brilliant sequence of nature taking its course where one animal gets eaten by another only for that chain to end with a snake that tries to attack the Predator, only to be killed and skinned. I mean, they aren't called Predators without a reason! The biggest callback to the Predator franchise and subsequently, the Predator: 1718 comics, comes in form of a nifty little touch that the makers introduce in one of the film's last scenes.

On the whole, Prey brings a much-needed fresh perspective to a franchise whose better days were actually a couple of decades ago. By elongating the timeline and introducing the alien race to a new timestamp, the film also aces in creating a new future that can give rise to new sequels. Prey plays to the strength of what's expected in today's cinema when it comes to aspects like representation, while also paying homage to the original with some brilliant action setpieces, making it a perfect addition to the franchise as well as to the list of best films of this year.

“Prey” is worth spending the money to see on the biggest screen possible. The wide open spaces of Alberta look fantastic, there’s plenty of monster mayhem and action, and the striking score by Sarah Schachner deserves to be blasted from the largest speakers available. So, why is Disney dumping an entry in the popular “ Predator ” series on Hulu in the middle of the summer? The original “Predator” starring Arnold Schwarzenegger turns 35 this year; what better way to celebrate than with a prequel that’s better than any of its sequels? The marketing team could have had a field day promoting this connection. So why is this film, like Disney+'s “ Turning Red ” before it, going straight to streaming with no simultaneous theatrical presence? 

Was it because director Dan Trachtenberg ’s sci-fi actioner didn’t have any major stars (besides the Predator, of course)? Was it because the screenplay by Patrick Aison takes place in 1719, making this a period piece? Or was it due to the fact that the protagonist is a woman and her kin are Native Americans, both of which buck the trend for movies like this? Considering the recent cancellations of films scheduled for upcoming release, I suppose I should be thankful that “Prey” can be seen anywhere, including on services to which I do not subscribe. This is not to say that streaming services are bad, just that I always feel itchy recommending movies you need a contract to see. Plus, this deserves a theatrical release.

But I digress. “Prey” bills itself as an origin story of the first Predator alien to appear on Earth. This one is fitted with slightly retro versions of the weapons wielded by the late actor Kevin Peter Hall in the first film. The Predator’s modus operandi is the same, however: it is a hunter and it’s looking for trophies of prey. This gives the creature a kindred spirit of sorts in Naru ( Amber Midthunder ), a young warrior who wishes to hunt like the males in her tribe, including her brother, Taabe ( Dakota Beavers ). Naru is teased by the guys, who state that hunting is men’s work, but we learn she can hold her own in a fight. She’s twice as tough as she looks, and three times more observant than the others. Naru is the one who first notices that there’s a new creature on their land. Perhaps it might have something to do with that blazing streak of fire she saw in the sky earlier.

While on the hunt to find a lion that’s been prowling about, Taabe barely tolerates Naru tagging along. They have an easygoing sibling relationship that Midthunder and Beavers create almost immediately in their first scenes. Their bond adds to our worries once the real danger appears. Naru notices a skinned snake and prints that do not belong to a known entity. “Something scared off that lion,” she tells Taabe, but he is in no mood for her claim that it is a “monster from childhood stories.” Meanwhile, the Predator works its way up the animal chain, teaching a pugnacious wolf a lesson about selling woof tickets by pulling out its spine. Naru finally gets to see it when it ruthlessly guts the bear that was chasing her and her faithful mutt.

The scene with the bear is so cleverly staged that one wishes “Prey” hadn’t given us a good look at the Predator beforehand. As it yanks the bear from its pursuit, lifting it up for the kill, the invisible Predator is painted into view by an outpouring of blood. Naru sees this and runs like Hell. So begins a series of expertly crafted chase scenes, with our antagonist employing familiar and new ways to eviscerate its victims. There’s also a callback to one of the original film’s best lines: “if it bleeds, we can kill it.” Bleed it does, with a neon green blood that, at one point, Naru uses as war paint.

Adding another element of danger (as well as fresh meat for viewers hungry for Predator-based carnage) is a slew of uncouth French fur trappers. When Naru stumbles upon a field of skinned buffalo, she prays over them, thinking that this is the monster’s handiwork. Soon she realizes it’s man, that other evil predator, who is responsible. Even though they agree with Naru that something otherworldly is out there, the trappers are even more villainous than the Predator. So we’re not sorry when they start getting splattered.

“Prey” is a worthy successor to Ah-nuld’s original, even though there are no “choppas” for anyone to get to in 1719. Naru deserves to be added to the list of tough characters who can hold their own against the Predator. She uses brains and brawn in equal measure to handle all of her foes, dispatching them with gory efficiency. Nature also proves a cruel adversary, but she’s ready for that as well. The film creates a portrait of her Comanche nation without othering them—they are the heroes of the story and their village teems with a sense of camaraderie. Even though the film is mostly in English (a full Comanche language version was apparently also shot in tandem), it does not endanger our suspension of disbelief.

Despite the expected whine from immature males who haven’t seen the movie yet but are already deeming it “too woke,” “Predator” fans will not be disappointed by “Prey.” It’s a scary and fun amusement park ride that also elicits a surprisingly tender emotional response. When Naru finally let out the war cry she had previously been denied, I couldn’t help but cheer. It’s too bad I couldn’t do it with an audience full of equally excited viewers.

“That scene is not in the movie”: How a Fake Story Inspired ‘Prey’ Director to Make the Best Predator Film Since Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Original Movie

D an Trachtenberg directed 2022’s Prey , which serves as a prequel to 1987’s Predator , starring Arnold Schwarzenegger in the lead role. The film received critical acclaim upon release, with many considering it arguably the best entry in the franchise since the original was released decades ago.

During an interview, Trachtenberg revealed the various inspirations behind the movie, including a childhood fake story that prompted him to develop a story set in the Predator world. Here is what Trachtenberg said about the first impression the original film had on him as a sixth grader and how it eventually shaped Prey .

Prey Director Dan Trachtenberg Reveals Childhood Incident Behind the Predator Prequel

Prey directed by Dan Trachtenberg was released in August 2022, receiving mostly positive reviews from critics and audiences alike. The film is set before the events of 1987’s Predator and follows a young Comanche woman trying to protect her people from an alien threat.

During an interview with The Wrap , Trachtenberg opened up about the conceptualization of the film. Trachtenberg was also asked about his experience with the original film and admitted that he wasn’t allowed to watch the Arnold Schwarzenegger -led film as a child because of its mature content.

Trachtenberg revealed that one day he was on his way to a karate tournament in a carpool with his sixth-grade classmates. His peers, who presumably had seen the movie discussed its gory and violent scenes, particularly a fight scene between a Native American and the titular alien.

That scene is not in the movie. You see Billy cut himself and then he screams off-camera and that’s it, but my kid brain envisioned how it must have been.

Trachtenberg made the above statement explaining how his imagination exaggerated the idea of a Native American fighting the Predator. The director admitted that this idea remained with him for a long time and credited it as being with the germ of the concept that eventually took the shape of Prey .

Dan Trachtenberg Reveals Shaping the Concept For Prey

During the same interview, Trachtenberg also spoke about the process behind crafting the story of Prey . Trachtenberg revealed that his initial idea was to make a period sci-fi film. At the same time, Trachtenberg wanted to convey a majority of the film’s story through reactions, with as little dialog as possible.

Trachtenberg further added how he and screenwriter Patrick Aison essentially tried to use the template of a sports film to craft the story. He said:

Maybe if we take the engine of a sports movie, an underdog story, and infuse it with a genre setting, then it was like, what’s a protagonist that we never see? 

Trachtenberg made the above statement, explaining how the duo decided to focus on a Comanche woman as the film’s protagonist. Trachtenberg added that the Comanche were usually relegated to playing sidekicks in films, making him want to focus on the tribe. As a result, Trachtenberg crafted a near-perfect David vs Goliath story with the Predator serving as the antagonist of the story.

Prey (2021) summary and ending explained

Netflix’s newest addition, ‘Prey’, centres around five friends on the run from an unknown sharpshooter set to kill them.

Directed and written by Thomas Sieben, the German thriller focuses on five friends – Roman (David Kross), Albert (Hanno Koffler), Peter (Robert Finster), Vincent (Yung Ngo), and Stefan (Klaus Steinbacher), who go hiking to celebrate Roman’s ending bachelorhood as he’s about to be married.

However, a mysterious sharpshooter suddenly appears and begins targeting them, carrying an unknown vendetta. Meanwhile, Roman is facing his own personal troubles.

As one friend after another gets shot, who will be left alive to tell the tale? Why is the killer hunting them?

Besides being hunted by a killer, Roman and his friends are reeling from their own personal issues that set the ongoing tone of the movie.

Roman and his brother, Albert, share a frenemy relationship clouded by Albert’s selfish nature and Roman’s subservient one.

Throughout the storyline, bits and pieces of Roman’s love life with his fiancé, Lisa (Livia Matthes) is showcased. However, as the story progresses, it gives way to a darker side of their relationship.

After Albert is injured, Roman takes his phone to try and contact the police but is unsuccessful. It is then that Roman notices text messages from Lisa on his brother’s phone, which displays a nude picture of Lisa that she had sent, along with a ‘can’t wait to see you again’ message.

Roman, who is excited about his upcoming wedding, is devastated at the discovery and punches Albert when the latter tries to make an excuse out of his mistake.

The sequence, however, isn’t stretched, considering the shooter is still out to get them.

Roman, Albert and Peter reach a deserted living space while on the run and try to take shelter in abandoned houses, but find them all locked.

Roman, in his search, finds one house which appears to be inhabited and goes in, realizing it might be the house of the shooter. As was earlier discovered, the shooter is a woman.

Roman enters the vacant house gingerly and notices pictures and children playthings — something that is seen around the forest in multiple places.

While exploring, Roman notices a laptop with a video set on pause. As he plays it, the recorded video displays two men squabbling among themselves, one holding a hunter rifle and the other recording the ongoing.

The men see a woman and a child on the bank of a river and approach them. The woman tries to shelter her child and asks them to leave, giving way to a mini scuffle that kills the child by mistake.

The gun she carries around to shoot people happens to be the one brought by the two men in the video.

Even though the overall vendetta behind the killing is left to interpretation, it can be assumed that the devastating loss of her child left her mentally unstable. She goes around killing people as an act of revenge.

The entire plot of the movie revolves around the hunter and her prey, and it sees many deaths throughout.

The thrill begins with Vincent getting shot in the arm, their car’s tire getting punctured, and them running for their lives.

Stefan gets killed next when they approach a woman standing on the river bank for help, who turns out to be the killer. They run to a convenience store, but Vincent and the store girl get killed in the process as they try to contact the police.

The trio — Roman, Albert and Peter — find an abandoned living society where they separate. Peter encounters the woman on the road and is shot point-blank.

Albert gets shot as well but survives the impact. Roman realises that there is no respite unless she is killed. He approaches the woman from behind with a knife but is shot in the leg when she sees him.

They engage in a messy scuffle, and Roman manages to snatch the gun and throw it away. The killer realises that her fight is over, and she jumps from the cliff ending her life.

A small-budget film named 7:11 PM has grabbed eyeballs with its promotional content recently. It stars Saahas Pagadala and Deepika Reddy in the lead roles. Chaitu Madala directed it, and the movie hit the screens today. Let’s see how it is.

Set in 1999, the story happens in Hamsaladeevi of Andhra Pradesh. Ravi Prasad (Saahas Pagadala) is an IPS aspirant who is head over heels for village belle Vimala (Deepika Reddy). A few extraterrestrial humans land in the town for a mission. It is also the time a big mutual fund scam is about to bust in Hamsaladeevi. Ravi Prasad and his gang try their best to bust the scam. How a small incident changes the paths of villagers and extraterrestrial humans is what the movie is about.

Plus Points:

Though it is a small-budget movie, the makers made it look grand and didn’t compromise on the quality. Hamsaladeevi and Melbourne, where the majority of the story takes place, is nicely showcased. The production design team did an exquisite job.

Saahas Pagadala gave a neat and sincere performance as a small-town boy. It is around him the entire story revolves, and the young actor did a fine job. Deepika Reddy did a decent job in her given role. Scenes that come before the interval and the climax are interesting.

Tess Walsh lends a nice support to Saahas Pagadala. Raghu Karumanchi, Dr. Bharat Reddy, Charan Kurugonda, and others pass muster. Rising Raju provides respite over the end with his comedy timing.

Minus Points:

7:11 PM is no doubt an ambitious project, but it goes wrong in the majority of the aspects. The main drawback, however, is its dull screenplay which doesn’t take off till the end. Sci-fi thrillers need to have a proper setup which is when the payoff will be good. In 7:11 PM, things are not set up well, and hence the ending doesn’t give a satisfactory feel.

The sci-fi movies like Play Back and Indru Netru Nalai follow a pattern according to which a change of a few past events by going back in time will ultimately change the outcome of another event. 7:11 PM also falls in the same category. This has not been handled well, and the proceedings lack any excitement. Things happen at a leisure pace eating up the screen time.

Also, the film lacks clarity in the proceedings. As similar films on this concept have come in the past, the ending is familiar to the audiences. Hence the mid portions need to be highly thrilling to captivate the audiences. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen, as the mid portions are mundane and a tad slow.

Sci-fi movies also can’t go wrong regarding logics, but 7:11 PM falters highly in this aspect. We get to see QR code payment scanners in brick-and-mortar stores for a movie that is set in 1999.

Technical Aspects:

The makers spent well, and the visuals were easy on the eye. Siva Shankar and Fabio Capodivento nicely captured the local and foreign locations with their lens. Gyaani’s music is passable. The editing is fine in the first half, but it is below par in the second half.

Coming to the director, Chaitu Maidala, he picked up an interesting concept, but he didn’t succeed in narrating it in an engaging way. Even the suspense elements don’t intrigue one. The screenplay is problematic such that it takes a while to figure out what exactly is happening.

On the whole, 7:11 PM has a decent premise, but the presentation is underwhelming. The movie could have been highly fascinating only if the execution had been engaging. The interesting moments are short-lived as they are followed by dull scenes. If you expect an edge-of-the-seat sci-fi thriller, you may get disappointed, and hence it is advised to keep your expectations low.

సినీ ప్రేక్షకులు హారర్ చిత్రాలనే ఎక్కువగా ఇష్టపడుతుంటారు. సస్పెన్స్, క్రైమ్, మిస్టరీ జోనర్‌ చిత్రాలకే ఎక్కువ డిమాండ్‌ ఉంటుంది. ముఖ్యంగా హాలీవుడ్‌లో హారర్‌ చిత్రాలకే కొదువే లేదు. ప్రస్తుతం ఓటీటీలు వచ్చాక నచ్చిన సినిమాను ఇంట్లోనే చూసేస్తున్నారు. దీంతో ఆడియన్స్‌కు ఒళ్లు గగుర్పొడ్చేలా లాంటి సినిమాలు సైతం ఓటీటీలో అందుబాటులో ఉన్నాయి. అలాంటి వాటి ది స్ట్రేంజర్స్‌ ముందువరుసలో ఉంటుంది. అలా 2008లో వచ్చిన చిత్రం ది స్ట్రేంజర్స్. ఈ సినిమాకు సీక్వెల్‌గా 2018లో ది స్ట్రేంజర్స్: ప్రే ఎట్ నైట్‌ తెరకెక్కించారు. రియల్‌ స్టోరీ ఆధారంగా వచ్చిన ఈ సినిమా ఆడియన్స్‌ను ఎంతవరకు భయపెట్టిందో రివ్యూలో చూద్దాం.

కథంటేంటే.. బైలీ మాడిసన్, లెవిస్ పుల్‌మాన్, క్రిస్టియానా హెండ్రిక్స్, మార్టిన్ హెండర్‌సన్ నలుగురు సభ్యులు ఓకే కుటుంబం. వీరంతా కలిసి విహారయాత్రకు వెళ్తారు. అక్కడికెళ్లిన వీరికి ఊహించని పరిస్థితులు ఎదురవుతాయి. ఫ్యామిలీ కలిసి సరదాగా వేకేషన్‌ ఎంజాయ్‌ చేద్దామనుకున్న వీరిని ముసుగులు ధరించి ఉన్న ముగ్గురు వెంబడిస్తారు. అయితే ఆ ముగ్గురు ఎవరు? అసలు వీళ్లను ఎందుకు చంపడాయనికి వచ్చారు? వీరి నుంచి ఆ ఫ్యామిలీ తప్పించుకుందా? నలుగురు ప్రాణాలతో బయటపడ్డారా? తెలియాలంటే 'ది స్ట్రేంజర్స్‌ :ప్రే ఎట్ నైట్' చూడాల్సిందే.

కథ విశ్లేషణ..

హారర్‌ చిత్రాలు అనగానే మనకు గుర్తొచ్చేది దెయ్యం, భూతం లాంటివే. ఆ జోనర్‌లో చిత్రాలన్నీ దాదాపు ‍అలాగే ఉంటాయని భావిస్తారు. కానీ ఇందులో మాత్రం ప్రేక్షకులకు సరికొత్త సస్పెన్స్ థ్రిల్‌ను అందించాడు. సినిమా ప్రారంభం నుంచే అసలు అవీ దెయ్యాలా? లేక మనుషులా అనే సస్పెన్స్ ఆడియన్స్‌కు కలిగేలా చూపించాడు. కథ మొత్తం ఆ నలుగురు కుటుంబ సభ్యులు, ముసుగులో ఉన్న ముగ్గురి చుట్టే తిరుగుతుంది.

ఆ కుటుంబం వారి నుంచి తప్పించుకునే ప్రయత్నంలో వచ్చే వయొలెంట్‌ సీన్స్‌ వెన్నులో వణుకు పట్టిస్తాయి. క్షణం క్షణం ఏం జరుగుతుందో అనే ఆసక్తిని ఆడియన్స్‌కు కలిగించాడు. ఒకవైపు ప్రాణభయం.. మరోవైపు అంతా చీకటి.. సినిమా చూస్తున్నంత సేపు ఆడియన్స్‌లో సస్పెన్స్ క్రియేట్‌ చేశాడు డైరెక్టర్‌. ఈ సినిమా చూసేటప్పుడు ఒక్క రాత్రి ఇంత భయంకరంగా ఉంటుందా? అనే ఫీలింగ్ ఆడియన్స్‌కు రావడం ఖాయం. ఒక రాత్రిని ఓ యుగంలా మార్చిన డైరెక్టర్‌.. సరికొత్త హారర్‌ థ్రిల్‌ను అందించాడు. ఇది సీక్వెల్‌ కావడంతో.. ప్రీక్వెల్ చూసిన వారికి మరింత ఆసక్తిగా ఉంటుంది.  

చివరగా.. హారర్‌ జోనర్‌ ఇష్టపడే సినీ ప్రియులకు ది స్ట్రేంజర్స్‌: ప్రే ఎట్ నైట్ అమెజాన్‌ ప్రైమ్‌లో అందుబాటులో ఉంది. తక్కువ నిడివిలో హారర్‌ ఇష్టపడేవారు ఈ సినిమాను ట్రై చేయొచ్చు. అయితే ఈ సినిమా కేవలం ఇంగ్లీష్‌, హిందీలో మాత్రమే అందుబాటులో ఉంది. హారర్‌ చిత్రాల్లో ఎక్కువగా డైలాగ్స్‌ ఉండవు కాబట్టి.. సబ్‌టైటిల్స్‌తోనే చూసేయొచ్చు.
