Reported questions are one form of reported speech .

We usually introduce reported questions with the verb "ask":

  • He asked (me) if / whether ... (YES/NO questions)
  • He asked (me) why / when / where / what / how ... (question-word questions)

As with reported statements , we may need to change pronouns and tense (backshift) as well as time and place in reported questions.

But we also need to change the word order . After we report a question, it is no longer a question (and in writing there is no question mark). The word order is like that of a normal statement (subject-verb-object).

Reported YES/NO questions

We introduce reported YES/NO questions with ask + if :

Note that in the above example the reported question has no auxiliary "do". But there is pronoun change and backshift.

Note that we sometimes use "whether" instead of "if". The meaning is the same. "Whether" is a little more formal and more usual in writing:

  • They asked us if we wanted lunch.
  • They asked us whether we wanted lunch.

Reported question-word questions

We introduce reported question-word questions with ask + question word :

Note that in the above example the reported question has no auxiliary "do". But there is pronoun change and backshift.

  • YES/NO questions: Do you want tea?
  • Question Word questions: Where did you drink tea?
  • Choice questions: Do you prefer tea or coffee?

What is reported speech?

“Reported speech” is when we talk about what somebody else said – for example:

  • Direct Speech: “I’ve been to London three times.”
  • Reported Speech: She said she’d been to London three times.

There are a lot of tricky little details to remember, but don’t worry, I’ll explain them and we’ll see lots of examples. The lesson will have three parts – we’ll start by looking at statements in reported speech, and then we’ll learn about some exceptions to the rules, and finally we’ll cover reported questions, requests, and commands.

Backshift of Verb Tenses in Reported Speech

When we use reported speech, we often change the verb tense backwards in time. This can be called “backshift.”

Here are some examples in different verb tenses:

Now that you know some of the reported speech rules about backshift, let’s learn some exceptions.

There are two situations in which we do NOT need to change the verb tense.

No backshift needed when the situation is still true

For example, if someone says “I have three children” (direct speech) then we would say “He said he has three children” because the situation continues to be true.

If I tell you “I live in the United States” (direct speech) then you could tell someone else “She said she lives in the United States” (that’s reported speech) because it is still true.

When the situation is still true, then we don’t need to backshift the verb.

He said he HAS three children

But when the situation is NOT still true, then we DO need to backshift the verb.

Imagine your friend says, “I have a headache.”

  • If you immediately go and talk to another friend, you could say, “She said she has a headache,” because the situation is still true
  • If you’re talking about that conversation a month after it happened, then you would say, “She said she had a headache,” because it’s no longer true.

No backshift needed when the situation is still in the future

We also don’t need to backshift to the verb when somebody said something about the future, and the event is still in the future.

Here’s an example:

  • On Monday, my friend said, “I ‘ll call you on Friday .”
  • “She said she ‘ll call me on Friday”, because Friday is still in the future from now.
  • It is also possible to say, “She said she ‘d (she would) call me on Friday.”
  • Both of them are correct, so the backshift in this case is optional.

Let’s look at a different situation:

  • On Monday, my friend said, “I ‘ll call you on Tuesday .”
  • “She said she ‘d  call me on Tuesday.” I must backshift because the event is NOT still in the future.

Quick review:

  • Normally in reported speech we backshift the verb, we put it in a verb tense that’s a little bit further in the past.
  • when the situation is still true
  • when the situation is still in the future

Reported Requests, Orders, and Questions

Those were the rules for reported statements, just regular sentences.

What about reported speech for questions, requests, and orders?

For reported requests, we use “asked (someone) to do something”:

  • “Please make a copy of this report.” (direct speech)
  • She asked me to make a copy of the report. (reported speech)

For reported orders, we use “told (someone) to do something:”

  • “Go to the bank.” (direct speech)
  • “He told me to go to the bank.” (reported speech)

The main verb stays in the infinitive with “to”:

  • She asked me to make a copy of the report. She asked me  make  a copy of the report.
  • He told me to go to the bank. He told me  go  to the bank.

For yes/no questions, we use “asked if” and “wanted to know if” in reported speech.

  • “Are you coming to the party?” (direct)
  • He asked if I was coming to the party. (reported)
  • “Did you turn off the TV?” (direct)
  • She wanted to know if I had turned off the TV.” (reported)

The main verb changes and back shifts according to the rules and exceptions we learned earlier.

Notice that we don’t use do/does/did in the reported question:

  • She wanted to know did I turn off the TV.
  • She wanted to know if I had turned off the TV.

For other questions that are not yes/no questions, we use asked/wanted to know (without “if”):

  • “When was the company founded?” (direct)
  • She asked when the company was founded.” (reported)
  • “What kind of car do you drive?” (direct)
  • He wanted to know what kind of car I drive. (reported)

Again, notice that we don’t use do/does/did in reported questions:

  • “Where does he work?”
  • She wanted to know  where does he work.
  • She wanted to know where he works.

Also, in questions with the verb “to be,” the word order changes in the reported question:

  • “Where were you born?” ([to be] + subject)
  • He asked where I was born. (subject + [to be])
  • He asked where was I born.

When we report what people say, we usually change the tense of the verbs to reflect that we are reporting – not giving direct speech. This pattern is followed when we report questions and there are also other important changes between direct questions and reported questions.

Reported choice questions  have the same structure as Reported YES/NO questions. Questions with the verb BE always have a different structure:  Was the tea cold? Where is my tea?  You can see all these differences in the examples below.

If we report what another person has said, we usually do not use the speaker’s exact words (direct speech), but reported (indirect) speech. Therefore, you need to learn how to transform direct speech into reported speech. The structure is a little different depending on whether you want to transform a statement, question or request.

When transforming statements, check whether you have to change:

What is the difference between reported speech an indirect speech?

Reported speech

Reported speech is how we represent the speech of other people or what we ourselves say. There are two main types of reported speech: direct speech and indirect speech.

Direct speech repeats the exact words the person used, or how we remember their words:

Barbara said, “I didn’t realise it was midnight.”

In indirect speech, the original speaker’s words are changed.

Barbara said she hadn’t realised it was midnight .

In this example, I becomes she and the verb tense reflects the fact that time has passed since the words were spoken: didn’t realise becomes hadn’t realised .

Indirect speech focuses more on the content of what someone said rather than their exact words:

“I’m sorry,” said Mark. (direct)
Mark apologised . (indirect: report of a speech act)

In a similar way, we can report what people wrote or thought:

‘I will love you forever,’ he wrote, and then posted the note through Alice’s door. (direct report of what someone wrote)
He wrote that he would love her forever , and then posted the note through Alice’s door. (indirect report of what someone wrote)
I need a new direction in life , she thought. (direct report of someone’s thoughts)
She thought that she needed a new direction in life . (indirect report of someone’s thoughts)

Reported speech: reporting and reported clauses

Speech reports consist of two parts: the reporting clause and the reported clause. The reporting clause includes a verb such as say, tell, ask, reply, shout , usually in the past simple, and the reported clause includes what the original speaker said.

Reported speech: punctuation

Direct speech.

In direct speech we usually put a comma between the reporting clause and the reported clause. The words of the original speaker are enclosed in inverted commas, either single (‘…’) or double (“…”). If the reported clause comes first, we put the comma inside the inverted commas:

“ I couldn’t sleep last night, ” he said.
Rita said, ‘ I don’t need you any more. ’

If the direct speech is a question or exclamation, we use a question mark or exclamation mark, not a comma:

‘Is there a reason for this ? ’ she asked.
“I hate you ! ” he shouted.

We sometimes use a colon (:) between the reporting clause and the reported clause when the reporting clause is first:

The officer replied: ‘It is not possible to see the General. He’s busy.’

Indirect speech

In indirect speech it is more common for the reporting clause to come first. When the reporting clause is first, we don’t put a comma between the reporting clause and the reported clause. When the reporting clause comes after the reported clause, we use a comma to separate the two parts:

She told me they had left her without any money.
Not: She told me, they had left her without any money .

Reported speech: reporting verbs

Say and tell.

We can use say and tell to report statements in direct speech, but say is more common. We don’t always mention the person being spoken to with say , but if we do mention them, we use a prepositional phrase with to ( to me, to Lorna ):

‘I’ll give you a ring tomorrow,’ she said .
‘Try to stay calm,’ she said to us in a low voice.
Not: ‘Try to stay calm,’ she said us in a low voice .

With tell , we always mention the person being spoken to; we use an indirect object (underlined):

‘Enjoy yourselves,’ he told them .
Not: ‘Enjoy yourselves,’ he told .

In indirect speech, say and tell are both common as reporting verbs. We don’t use an indirect object with say , but we always use an indirect object (underlined) with tell :

He said he was moving to New Zealand.
Not: He said me he was moving to New Zealand .
He told me he was moving to New Zealand.
Not: He told he was moving to New Zealand .

We use say , but not tell , to report questions:

‘Are you going now?’ she said .
Not: ‘Are you going now?’ she told me .

We use say , not tell , to report greetings, congratulations and other wishes:

‘Happy birthday!’ she said .
Not: Happy birthday!’ she told me .
Everyone said good luck to me as I went into the interview.
Not: Everyone told me good luck …

Other reporting verbs

The reporting verbs in this list are more common in indirect reports, in both speaking and writing:

Simon admitted that he had forgotten to email Andrea.
Louis always maintains that there is royal blood in his family.
The builder pointed out that the roof was in very poor condition.

Most of the verbs in the list are used in direct speech reports in written texts such as novels and newspaper reports. In ordinary conversation, we don’t use them in direct speech. The reporting clause usually comes second, but can sometimes come first:

‘Who is that person?’ she asked .
‘It was my fault,’ he confessed .
‘There is no cause for alarm,’ the Minister insisted .

Question forms and reported speech.

1.  Normal word order is used in reported questions, that is, the subject comes before the verb, and it is not necessary to use  ‘do’  or  ‘did’ :

  • “Where does Peter live?” —>  She asked him  where Peter lived .

2.  Yes / no questions : This type of question is reported by using  ‘ask’ +  ‘if / whether  + clause :

  • “Do you speak English?” —-> He asked me  if I spoke English .
  • “Are you British or American?” —-> He asked me  whether I was British or American.
  • “Is it raining?” —–> She asked  if it was raining .
  • “Have you got a computer?” ——> He wanted to know  whether I had a computer .
  • “Can you type?” —–> She asked  if I could type .
  • “Did you come by train?” ——> He enquired  whether I had come by train .
  • “Have you been to Bristol before?” ——>  She asked   if I had been to Bristol before .

3.  Question words :

This type of question is reported by using ‘ask’ (or another verb like ‘ask’) + question word + clause. The clause contains the question, in normal word order and with the necessary tense change.

  • “What is your name?” he asked me. —–> He asked me  what my name was .
  • “How old is your mother?”, he asked. ——-> He asked  how old her mother was .
  • The policeman said to the boy, “Where do you live?” ——->  The policeman asked the boy  where he lived .
  • “What time does the train arrive?” she asked. ——-> She asked  what time the train arrived .
  • “When can we have dinner?” she asked. ——>  She asked   when they could have dinner .
  • Peter said to John, “Why are you so late?” ——-> Peter asked the John  why he was so late .

What is reported speech.

Reported speech is when you tell somebody what you or another person said before. When reporting a speech, some changes are necessary.

For example, the statement:

  • Jane said she was waiting for her mom .

is a reported speech, whereas:

  • Jane said, “I’m waiting for my mom.”

is a direct speech.

Reported speech is also referred to as indirect speech or indirect discourse .

Reported Speech

Before explaining how to report a discourse, let us first distinguish between direct speech and reported speech .

Direct speech vs reported speech

1. We use direct speech to quote a speaker’s exact words. We put their words within quotation marks. We add a reporting verb such as “he said” or “she asked” before or after the quote.

  • He said, “I am happy.”

2. Reported speech is a way of reporting what someone said without using quotation marks. We do not necessarily report the speaker”‘s exact words. Some changes are necessary: the time expressions, the tense of the verbs, and the demonstratives.

  • He said that he was happy.

A. Reporting statements

When transforming statements, check whether you have to change:

  • place and time expression

1- Pronouns

In reported speech, you often have to change the pronoun depending on who says what.

She says, “My dad likes roast chicken.” => She says that her dad likes roast chicken.

  • If the sentence starts in the present, there is no backshift of tenses in reported speech.
  • If the sentence starts in the past, there is often a backshift of tenses in reported speech.

No backshift

Do not change the tense if the introductory clause (i.e., the reporting verb) is in the present tense (e. g. He says ). Note, however, that you might have to change the form of the present tense verb (3rd person singular).

  • He says, “I write poems.” => He says that he writes English.

You must change the tense if the introductory clause (i.e., the reporting verb) is in the past tense (e. g. He said ).

  • He said, “I am happy.”=> He said that he was happy.

Examples of the main changes in verb tense :

3. Modal verbs

The modal verbs could, should, would, might, needn’t, ought to, and used to do not normally change.

  • He said: “She might be right.” => He said that she might be right.
  • He told her: “You needn’t see a doctor.” => He told her that she needn’t see a doctor.

Other modal verbs such as can, shall, will, must, and ma y change:

4- Place, demonstratives, and time expressions

Place, demonstratives, and time expressions change if the context of the reported statement (i.e. the location and/or the period of time) is different from that of the direct speech.

In the following table, you will find the different changes of place; demonstratives, and time expressions.

B. Reporting Questions

When transforming questions, check whether you have to change:

  • The pronouns
  • The place and time expressions
  • The tenses (backshift)

Also, note that you have to:

  • transform the question into an indirect question
  • use the question word ( where, when, what, how ) or if / whether

C. Reporting requests/commands

When transforming requests and commands, check whether you have to change:

  • place and time expressions
  • She said, “Sit down.” – She asked me to sit down.
  • She said, “don’t be lazy” – She asked me not to be lazy

D. Other transformations

  • Expressions of advice with must , should, and ought are usually reported using advise / urge . Example: “You must read this book.” He advised/urged me to read that book.
  • The expression let’s is usually reported using suggest . In this case, there are two possibilities for reported speech: gerund or statement with should . Example : “Let’s go to the cinema.” 1. He suggested going to the cinema. 2. He suggested that we should go to the cinema.

Main clauses connected with and/but

If two complete main clauses are connected with and or but , put that after the conjunction.

  • He said, “I saw her but she didn’t see me.=> He said that he had seen her but that she hadn’t seen him.

If the subject is dropped in the second main clause (the conjunction is followed by a verb), do not use that .

  • She said, “I am a nurse and work in a hospital.=> He said that she was a nurse and worked in a hospital.

punctuation rules of the reported speech

Direct speech:

We normally add a comma between the reporting verbs (e.g., she/he said, reported, he replied, etc.) and the reported clause in direct speech. The original speaker”s words are put between inverted commas, either single (“…”) or double (“…”).

  • She said, “I wasn’t ready for the competition”.

Note that we insert the comma within the inverted commas if the reported clause comes first:

  • “I wasn’t ready for the competition,” she said.

Indirect speech:

In indirect speech, we don’t put a comma between the reporting verb and the reported clause and we omit the inverted quotes.

  • She said that she hadn’t been ready for the competition.

In reported questions and exclamations, we remove the question mark and the exclamation mark.

  • She asked him why he looked sad?
  • She asked him why he looked sad.

Can we omit that in the reported speech?

Yes, we can omit that after reporting verbs such as he said , he replied , she suggested , etc.

  • He said that he could do it. – He said he could do it.
  • She replied that she was fed up with his misbehavior. – She replied she was fed up with his misbehavior.

Reported speech requires a reporting verb such as “he said”, she “replied”, etc.

Here is a list of some common reporting verbs:

  • Cry (meaning shout)

In reported speech, we put the words of a speaker in a subordinate clause introduced by a reporting verb such as – “ he said ” and “ she asked “- with the required person and tense adjustments.

Reported Speech - Definition, Rules and Usage with Examples

Reported speech or indirect speech is the form of speech used to convey what was said by someone at some point of time. This article will help you with all that you need to know about reported speech, its meaning, definition, how and when to use them along with examples. Furthermore, try out the practice questions given to check how far you have understood the topic.

Reported speech is the form in which one can convey a message said by oneself or someone else, mostly in the past. It can also be said to be the third person view of what someone has said. In this form of speech, you need not use quotation marks as you are not quoting the exact words spoken by the speaker, but just conveying the message.

Now, take a look at the following dictionary definitions for a clearer idea of what it is.

Reported speech, according to the Oxford Learner’s Dictionary, is defined as “a report of what somebody has said that does not use their exact words.” The Collins Dictionary defines reported speech as “speech which tells you what someone said, but does not use the person’s actual words.” According to the Cambridge Dictionary, reported speech is defined as “the act of reporting something that was said, but not using exactly the same words.” The Macmillan Dictionary defines reported speech as “the words that you use to report what someone else has said.”

Reported speech is a little different from direct speech . As it has been discussed already, reported speech is used to tell what someone said and does not use the exact words of the speaker. Take a look at the following rules so that you can make use of reported speech effectively.

  • The first thing you have to keep in mind is that you need not use any quotation marks as you are not using the exact words of the speaker.
  • You can use the following formula to construct a sentence in the reported speech.
  • You can use verbs like said, asked, requested, ordered, complained, exclaimed, screamed, told, etc. If you are just reporting a declarative sentence , you can use verbs like told, said, etc. followed by ‘that’ and end the sentence with a full stop . When you are reporting interrogative sentences, you can use the verbs – enquired, inquired, asked, etc. and remove the question mark . In case you are reporting imperative sentences , you can use verbs like requested, commanded, pleaded, ordered, etc. If you are reporting exclamatory sentences , you can use the verb exclaimed and remove the exclamation mark . Remember that the structure of the sentences also changes accordingly.
  • Furthermore, keep in mind that the sentence structure , tense , pronouns , modal verbs , some specific adverbs of place and adverbs of time change when a sentence is transformed into indirect/reported speech.

Transforming Direct Speech into Reported Speech

As discussed earlier, when transforming a sentence from direct speech into reported speech, you will have to change the pronouns, tense and adverbs of time and place used by the speaker. Let us look at the following tables to see how they work.

Here are some tips you can follow to become a pro in using reported speech.

  • Select a play, a drama or a short story with dialogues and try transforming the sentences in direct speech into reported speech.
  • Write about an incident or speak about a day in your life using reported speech.
  • Develop a story by following prompts or on your own using reported speech.

  • Santana said that she would be auditioning for the lead role in Funny Girl.
  • Blaine requested us to help him with the algebraic equations.
  • Karishma asked me if I knew where her car keys were.
  • The judges announced that the Warblers were the winners of the annual acapella competition.
  • Binsha assured that she would reach Bangalore by 8 p.m.
  • Kumar said that he had gone to the doctor the previous day.
  • Lakshmi asked Teena if she would accompany her to the railway station.
  • Jibin told me that he would help me out after lunch.
  • The police ordered everyone to leave from the bus stop immediately.
  • Rahul said that he was drawing a caricature.

Transform the following sentences into reported speech by making the necessary changes.

1. Rachel said, “I have an interview tomorrow.”

2. Mahesh said, “What is he doing?”

3. Sherly said, “My daughter is playing the lead role in the skit.”

4. Dinesh said, “It is a wonderful movie!”

  • Pronouns may change in reported speech, depending on who is speaking and who is being spoken to.
  • Reported speech may use modal verbs , such as "could," "should," or "would."
  • Punctuation is important in reported speech, especially when using quotation marks. Commas and periods should be placed inside the quotation marks.

Types of reported speech - statements, questions, and commands

There are three types of reported speech: statements, questions, and commands. Each type has its own set of rules and grammar.

Statements are the most common type of reported speech. They are used to report what someone has said in the past. Here are some examples:

  • Direct speech : "I'm tired," she said.
  • Reported speech : She said that she was tired.

Questions are also commonly reported. They are used to report a question that someone has asked in the past. Here are some examples:

  • Direct speech : "What time is it?" he asked.

  • Direct speech uses the speaker's exact words, including any mistakes or errors. Indirect speech does not include mistakes or errors.

Reported speech vs. direct speech

Note: A sentence in Simple Past (verb 2nd form or Did + Verb 1st form) need not always be converted to Past Perfect (had + Verb 3rd form) . But it is safe to convert to Past Perfect as others (evaluators) may not be knowing it. Even CBSE marking schemes seem to follow the safe rule i.e. Changing Past Tense to past Perfect tense. An example is given below.

Direct: He said, “I saw the thief myself.”

Indirect: he said that he had seen the thief himself. (The safe rule to follow) OR He said that he saw the thief himself. (It is also correct – but mostly not followed)

Garima: So, after a decade in the industry, are you truly ‘satisfied’? Karan: I love the film industry. It has its flaws though. Garima: What do you mean by this statement? Karan: We are a bunch of competitive, ambitious, sometimes petty people. But the passion cements us together.

The White House rarely allows President Biden to sit down for interviews, and Wednesday’s chat with CNN’s Erin Burnett shows why.

In a brief 17 minutes, Biden told 15 lies — nearly a lie a minute.

From whoppers about the economy to prevarications on Israel, Biden spun a fantasyland of a presidency that voters know is false.

Here’s a rundown:

LIE 1: “I’ve created over 15 million jobs since I’ve been president.”

Biden’s favorite falsehood, told over and over and over again no matter how many fact-checks call him out.

He took office at the tail end of a pandemic that blew a hole in the economy, when lockdown policies wholeheartedly endorsed by Democrats took people out of the office and onto COVID stimulus checks.

He “created” nothing — after the introduction of the vaccine, people returned to the workforce.

If anything, Biden’s policies slowed the recovery — it took until July 2022 for the US economy to regain all the jobs lost due to the pandemic.

LIE 2: “Other than Herbert Hoover, [Donald Trump] is the only president who has lost more jobs than he created.”

The corollary lie.

Trump didn’t “lose” jobs; he was president during a global pandemic.

And liberals were thrilled to put people on government checks and shut down the world during COVID.

They cannot argue that the job market would have been any different in 2020 under a Democrat.

LIE 3: “Look at what he says he’s going to do if he gets elected. Says he’s going to do away with what I’ve done on Medicare, reducing the price of Medicare.”

There’s no basis for this, as Trump has said he “will never do anything that will hurt or jeopardize Social Security or Medicare.”

Further, Trump pursued the exact same executive orders to lower prescription drug prices as did Biden.

LIE 4: “You know we have 1,000 billionaires in America. Know what their average federal tax is? 8.3%.”

Factcheck.org notes, “The top 0.1% of earners, with more than $4.4 million in expanded cash income, pay an average rate of 25.1% in federal income and payroll taxes.”

LIE 5: “We’ve already turned it around [on the economy].”

Burnett quoted some tough figures on the economy, noting that the cost of buying a home had doubled, and “Real income when you account for inflation is actually down since you took office.”

Biden’s response?

LIE 6: “The polling data has been wrong all along.”

They are all of them, from dozens of different sources, wrong?

LIE 7: “There’s corporate greed going out there. And it’s got to be dealt with.”

Labor costs increased 4.2% between 2023 and 2024.

They increased 5.1% from 2021 to 2022.

The costs of everything, from supplies to shipping, rent and taxes, have gone up.

Because of the huge amount of government money injected into the system, minimum-wage increases by California and other states, and pent-up demand by consumers.

How is Biden going to “deal with it”?

Tell companies they can’t raise prices to avoid losing money?

LIE 8: “[Inflation] was 9% when I came to office.”

This is the lie of the night.

Biden continues to pretend that the US was in terrible shape when he took office, when it was already on the rebound — thanks to Trump’s Warp Speed project that vaccinated people quickly against COVID.

Inflation was a measly 1.4% in January 2021.

Then Biden went on a first-year drunken-sailor spending spree, and inflation skyrocketed.

LIE 9: “They have the money to spend. It angers them and angers me that they have to spend more.”

They have the money to spend?

According to Bankrate, 76% of adults making less than $50,000 a year are living from paycheck to paycheck, an increase from 71% the year before that.

Biden need only watch the nightly news to see people cutting back on groceries, gas — even trips to McDonald’s — because their spending power has decreased.

LIE 10: “Civilians have been killed in Gaza as a consequence of those bombs, and other ways in which they go after population centers.”

It’s libel to suggest that Israel is deliberating targeting population centers .

Hamas embeds itself among the civilian population, creating bases inside hospitals and digging tunnels under residential apartments.

Israel has been warning the people of Rafah for more than a week to move to a safe zone outside the city.

They do not “go after” population centers, they work hard to minimize deaths while stopping the terrorists who kidnapped, raped and murdered Israeli civilians.

LIE 11: “We’re not walking away from Israel’s security. We’re walking away from Israel’s ability to wage war in those areas.”

But defeating Hamas is integral to Israel’s security.

Biden brought this up, saying he warned Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu not to “make the mistakes” we made in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Except Biden voted in favor of invading Iraq.

So Biden may regret that decision today, but it made sense to him back them.

LIE 13: “You can’t only love your country when you win.”

Someone had better tell all the celebrities and elites in the Democratic Party who claim they are going to move if Trump is re-elected, or say they “don’t know their country anymore,” or who burn American flags as they rally for Hamas .

Biden’s chiding of Trump with this line would carry more weight if he said it to his own voters.

LIE 14: “I travel around the world, other world leaders, know what they all say, 80% of them, ‘You gotta win. My democracy is at stake.’ ”

Maybe we can’t say this is absolutely a lie, but it sure sounds like one of those statements for which the press loves to go after Trump.

Are other world leaders really pulling Biden aside after his nap and saying “democracy is at stake” if he loses? Give us a break.

LIE 15: “Then [Trump] is going to put in a 10% tax that’s going to increase average Americans’ cost $1,500 a year.”

Trump has proposed no such tax. Perhaps Biden means Trump’s plan for a 10% tariff on imported goods, which may or may not cost Americans more money.

You know who else is considering imposing tariffs? Biden. Just this week, under the headline “Biden Looks to Thwart Surge of Chinese Imports,” the New York Times notes that China is using unfair business practices and Biden wants to counter it.

FAMU donor, CEO speaks out after skepticism around record $237 million donation

As excitement ran into online disbelief related to this past weekend's record $237 million donation to Florida A&M University , donor and CEO Gregory Gerami says he doesn't understand the misgivings about the gift.

“The stocks have been held by the university for over a month now, so I don't know where the confusion or the skepticism would be since it's already in a financial account with the university,” Gerami said.

The 30-year-old hemp farmer, investor and entrepreneur drew the national spotlight with his gift, which appears to be both the largest in history at FAMU and any of the other 100-plus historically Black colleges and universities, or HBCUs, in the country.

But little is known about Gerami, his business or the Issac Batterson 7th Family Trust that put up the money. They have a remarkably small online footprint, and news that his $95 million "transformational" planned gift to Coastal Carolina University fell through last year has further fueled alumni concerns.

FAMU's communications office set up a late-afternoon online news conference Monday afternoon with Gerami — founder of the Batterson Farms Corporation — to clear up “miscommunicated” information and “set the record straight” on the historic stock donation worth $237,750,000.

FAMU Vice President of Alumni Affairs Carmen Cummings and Vice President for University Advancement Shawnta Friday-Stroud — who also is executive director of the FAMU Foundation — also were on the call, organized for the Tallahassee Democrat, Bloomberg and the Inside Higher Ed.

Cummings told the Democrat the university has full faith in the donation and are expecting "great things" on the horizon.

But university officials, who have said they are bound by a non-disclosure agreement on details of the donation, left it largely up to Gerami to answer questions.

“This is a main example why I don't have an internet presence, nor do I care to have one,” Gerami said of the online skepticism. “People take things out of context. They run and they damage and hurt people with information that's incorrect and just not appropriate.”

'We are fully aware of the skepticism,' FAMU says

Gerami announced the donation during Saturday’s spring commencement ceremony at the Al Lawson Center on campus. The announcement has been stirring up mixed reactions from FAMU supporters and alumni, with some believing the donation is too good to be true. Others have criticized those who are questioning the university's due diligence and planting seeds of doubt about the philanthropist.

As the discussion swirled online, FAMU issued a statement Sunday.

"We are fully aware of the skepticism that sometimes comes with such a large gift," the university said in the statement. "As expected, some individuals in the public are and will continue researching Mr. Gerami.

"Please know that FAMU has done its due diligence when it comes to this matter. Additionally, Mr. Gerami has and continues to do his own due diligence on things that have been and are happening at FAMU."

Friday-Stroud told the Tallahassee Democrat Saturday that Gerami and the Issac Batterson 7th Family Trust have already transferred the stocks — some of which are invested in hydroponic farming and agriculture businesses — to the FAMU Foundation’s account, and the university holds certificates for those stocks.

Sunday's statement went further.

"Mr. Gerami’s $237,750,000 stock transfer was received in the same manner in which we have accepted all other stocks donated to the University through the FAMU Foundation Inc," FAMU wrote. "As with any non-cash gift received, such as cryptocurrency, real estate and stocks, it will be converted to cash and recorded appropriately."

The transfer was made over a month ago, and the donation amount represents what the stock price was at the time they were transferred.

Although the plan is for the university to sell the stocks before the year is over, specifics about a potential date cannot be shared due to the non-disclosure agreement, Gerami said.

By Tuesday afternoon, the vice chair of  Florida A&M University’s  Board of Trustees was calling on FAMU President  Larry Robinson  and board chair  Kristin Harper  to convene a public “emergency” meeting for the university community to learn more about a recent $237 million donation.

“As Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees, I have a responsibility to safeguard the integrity of the university I cherish," he said in a prepared statement, "but I have deep concerns that this process is moving too quickly to embrace a gift without proper scrutiny.”'

Gerami traces his path to prosperity, but declines to release net worth

Gerami says the multi-million-dollar gift to FAMU is the first donation he has ever made at that level.

It comes after someone from his team initially reached out to FAMU’s Office of University Advancements about the donation proposal about six months ago, in which they were connected to Audrey Simmons Smith, the office’s director of development and corporate relations.

During Monday's call, Gerami explained how his journey of building up his wealth over time started with a landscaping and property management business that he owned before selling it in 2016.

He then launched an investment company called Batterson Southeast Capital Group from 2017 to 2020 before shifting to hydroponic farming of plants with Batterson Farms Corporation, which was established in 2021.

The corporation is a hydroponic produce business with industrial hemp . He says the company makes money through an agreement with a farming buyback program, where the company is provided with seeds and grows them so that the seed’s products — such as cannabidiol (CBD) oil — can be bought back.

Hemp plants contain a percentage of CBD oil that often varies, and the oil can be bought back at 15 cents for each percent of CBD oil found in a hemp plant. He said such an arrangement could yield about $53 million a year.

In April 2023, Lubbock, Texas-based TV station KAMC reported that Gerami, said to be the youngest African American hemp producer in Texas, bought 114 acres of land with seven warehouses  with a goal of hiring 600 people and building the largest commercial hydroponic site in West Texas.

Gerami said he currently has only a few full-time administrative employees but about 7,000 indirect and contract employees that he expects to grow to a little bit over 10,000 by the end of the year. He also says his company — with offices in Van Horn and San Antonio, Texas — is expanding to about four more new warehouses across the country in the next year or so.

He said he has about 2,500 plants per acre, but he declined to share his annual revenue or net worth.

"I gave all the money away, I can tell you that," he said.

Although he did not go into the specific of his stock investments, he says his company has benefited from investments in hydroponic farming-related businesses as well as other companies that invest in hydroponics, which is a method where plants are grown by using a water-based nutrient solution instead of soil. 

He also said the non-disclosure agreement and his "fiduciary responsibilities to the trust" barred him from revealing any more details about the Isaac Batterson family trust, which he described as a holding company for the assets that funded the FAMU endowment.

When asked why he chose FAMU, Gerami says the university’s mission, direction and research capabilities in the area of hemp production strongly align with the work and goals of his farming company.

“When we look at our legacy and our business — and as I exit out of my business, which should happen in the next couple of years — FAMU is the designated spot as I expand on charitable giving in research,” Gerami said. “I’ve gotten to know the folks at FAMU really well and I consider them like family.”

Beyond philanthropy, he hopes to have a continued role at FAMU by being able to utilize the university’s research and agriculture programs for testing new products, among other things.

Gerami says he likes to stay in the background

While a lot of multi-millionaire entrepreneurs have a large online footprint and vast volume of news clips, Gerami said he intentionally stays in the background. His family is the reason for that, he says.

“I have a family, I have younger kids and I come from a large family,” Gerami said. “I was born one of eight kids and I have nine siblings even in my adopted family. Being a parent and being a family person, I have to protect my family, and their safety is the most important thing.”

He says he does well at “keeping things off the web and keeping things under the radar.”

“I will say everything is out there,” he added. “The only thing that you cannot find is the money. That's really the only thing you can't find online.”

Gerami responds to viral post asking 'has FAMU been fooled'

Among the individuals who question the validity of Gerami's $237 million donation to FAMU is Howard University alum Jerell Blakeley, who wrote a column in Education News Flash’s HBCU Digest titled “For the Love of Money, has FAMU been fooled?”

Blakeley questioned how quickly Gerami built up his wealth, the lack of a money trail with Batterson Farms and his scattered social media presence.

"If this turns out to be a scam, the entire university leadership should resign for a massive lack of vetting," Blakeley wrote in the viral piece.

He also noted that Gerami made headlines last year after he was identified as an anonymous donor behind a $95 million "transformational" planned gift to Coastal Carolina University. But things went sour over the span of four months,  according to reporting by the Myrtle Beach Sun-News.

In a press release at the time, the university said that it was " terminating its agreement  with the donor, citing an unfulfilled early expectation of the arrangement."

Gerami, however, told the Sun-News "he felt disrespected" by officials, which is why the deal fell through. He said the circumstance at FAMU and CCU are completely different because no money had ever changed hands. He said they never made it to the stock transfer at CCU, which is completed at FAMU.

While addressing the HBCU Digest column, Gerami said Blakeley called him at around 10 p.m. Sunday with “a bunch of questions” and information that was “completely wrong.”

In his column, Blakeley wrote, "If I am wrong, I will publicly apologize in the same manner I raised my inquiries. More importantly, I hope I am wrong. I would love nothing more for historically black colleges to get their fair share of this nation's wealth."

What Gerami’s told students during FAMU commencement speech

FAMU formally introduced Gerami to the university community as the keynote speaker for its last spring 2024 graduation ceremony, where three total commencement events were held over the weekend.

Before the announcement of the $237 million, Gerami, in a seven-minute speech, gave the FAMU graduates a brief look into his background and delivered a message of hope.

“From the moment of my birth, I faced obstacles that would shape the course of my life," Gerami said. "Born to a single mother who was 24 with eight kids at the time, I entered the world facing circumstances beyond my control.”

He shared that due to his mother’s struggle with addiction, he was born with an opioid addiction and Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. He was also diagnosed with cerebral palsy, seizure disorder and severe attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD.

But with support from a foster family that adopted him at a young age, and mentorship from former Arlington, Texas Mayor Robert Cluck, as well as a Merrill Lynch financial advisor, he says they helped him “find the strength to overcome the challenges."

“My journey like yours is a testament to resilience, innovation and service,” Gerami said in his remarks. “Despite facing formidable challenges in my early life, I have dedicated myself to making a positive impact in the world of agriculture.”

He dubbed himself the youngest African American industrial hemp producer in Texas — a part of his speech that was followed by a round of applause as the crowd cheered him on.

“As you prepare to embark on your journey, I urge you to embrace the challenges that lie ahead of you,” Gerami said. “May you go forth with the knowledge that the greatest gifts in life are not found in what we receive, but in what we give.”

Ahead of the donation announcement, he received a President’s Award from FAMU President Larry Robinson for being a commencement speaker.

“The message here is that somebody is watching all of the time,” Robinson told the graduating students after the donation was announced. “They’ve heard about the great things that you are doing here at this institution under the stewardship of our outstanding faculty and staff.”
