Research Assistant in Machine Learning for Clinical Data Analysis - UK Dementia Research Institute

Imperial college london - faculty of medicine.

Location: White City campus

Job Summary

We are recruiting a Research Assistant in the research group of Dr Cynthia Sandor (Edmond J Safra Lecturer in Parkinson’s Disease Research, UKRI Future Leader Fellow, UK DRI Group Leader) for a project identifying earlier and more accessible biomarkers for Parkinson's disease , including digital biomarkers and blood biomarkers. The candidate will evaluate the predictive value of these biomarkers extracted from deeply phenotyped cohorts and biobanks by providing probabilistic forecasts for future medical events associated with the risk and progression of Parkinson's disease. This will involve data-driven feature extraction and the training and optimization of various machine learning models. The research will focus on analysing data from deeply phenotyped cohorts of patients affected by Parkinson's disease (PPMI, UK Tracking, UK) and from different biobanks (UK Biobank, All of Us, FinnGen, NHS-CPRD).

Dementias represent one of the greatest medical and economic challenges facing our society today.  The UK Dementia Research Institute ( UK DRI ) – a national, distributed network of centres – was created to address these challenges.

You will be a member of the UK DRI, based in the Department of Brain Sciences at Imperial and work collaboratively with Professor Payam Barnaghi ( UK DRI Care Research & Technology Centre ).

Duties and responsibilities

The successful candidate will be collaborative. You will play a central role in developing the neuroscience and machine learning work, and will be highly motivated and interested in the development and application of computational approaches to identify earlier biomarkers in Parkinson's disease. You will be organised, able to prioritise and manage your workload effectively.

Candidates will be supported in their career development. Imperial and the UK DRI encourage continued professional development and you will be encouraged to develop skills in emerging computational approaches.

Essential requirements:

  • A relevant master’s degree in Neuroscience, Computer Science, Mathematics, or related disciplines with a focus on machine learning, deep learning, or data science.
  • Proficiency in machine learning and computational modelling.
  • Capable of developing and implementing new concepts autonomously.
