The phrase "این نیز بگذرد‎" (pronounced "in nīz bogzarad") is often associated with Persian Sufi poets and is translated as "This too shall pass." It was said to reflect the transient nature of life and the impermanence of both joy and sorrow.

In the Western world, the phrase gained popularity through a story involving the king of Persia and a wise advisor, although many believe the term was coined by King Solomon . According to Rabbi Lisa Rubin, “King Solomon was trying to humble his wisest servant, so he asked him to perform a seemingly impossible task: to find something that did not exist. He requested a magic ring — one that, if a sad man wore it, he would become happy and if a happy man wore it, he would become sad.” 

The story suggests that the servant could not find anything of such nature. So, King Solomon decided upon himself to go to a jeweler and design a ring with the inscription in Hebrew saying, “Gam ze ya’avor,” which means, “This, too, shall pass.”

History of 'This Too Shall Pass'

The phrase "This too shall pass" may have been popularized by Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States. Lincoln is quoted using the expression during a speech to the Wisconsin State Agricultural Society in Milwaukee on September 30, 1859. The context was related to the agricultural challenges faced by the nation at the time. The exact wording may vary in different accounts, but the essence of the message was that both the successes and the difficulties faced by the nation were temporary.

“It is said an Eastern monarch once charged his wise men to invent him a sentence, to be ever in view, and which should be true and appropriate in all times and situations. They presented him the words: "And this, too, shall pass away." How much it expresses! How chastening in the hour of pride! -- how consoling in the depths of affliction! "And this, too, shall pass away." And yet let us hope it is not quite true. Let us hope, rather, that by the best cultivation of the physical world, beneath and around us; and the intellectual and moral world within us, we shall secure an individual, social, and political prosperity and happiness, whose course shall be onward and upward, and which, while the earth endures, shall not pass away.” ( Collected Works of Abraham Lincoln ).

Is 'This Too Shall Pass' in the Bible?

Although this information is great, this does not seem to explain why people believe “This Too Shall Pass” is in the Bible. So, I conducted a search in the Bible to see where people may see that phrase. 

In Deuteronomy 28 , the phrase, “ It shall come to pass ” is repeated twice. “Now it shall come to pass, if you diligently obey the voice of the Lord your God, to observe carefully all His commandments which I command you today, that the Lord your God will set you high above all nations of the earth” ( Deuteronomy 28:1 ). God clearly states that if you obey His commands then all of these blessings will come to pass. 

But God also states in Deuteronomy 28:15 , “But it shall come to pass, if you do not obey the voice of the Lord your God, to observe carefully all His commandments and His statutes which I command you today, that all these curses will come upon you and overtake you…” 

A lot of the times we are afraid of the outcome of circumstances. If we don't obey or heed God's voice, then we are following our own voice. We fear God, but we also fear man. Proverbs 29:25 states, “The fear of man brings a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord shall be safe.”

In Matthew Henry’s Concise Commentary, he states, “The blessings are here put before the curses. God is slow to anger, but swift to show mercy. It is his delight to bless. It is better that we should be drawn to what is good by a child-like hope of God's favor, than that we be frightened to it by a slavish fear of his wrath” ( Nehemiah 9:17 ).

  Here are some other scriptures that use this phrase:

“‘And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your young men shall see visions, Your old men shall dream dreams” ( Acts 2:17 ).

“It shall come to pass, That before they call, I will answer; And while they are still speaking, I will hear” ( Isaiah 65:24 ).

“’For I am the Lord. I speak, and the word which I speak will come to pass; it will no more be postponed; for in your days, O rebellious house, I will say the word and perform it,’ says the Lord God’” ( Ezekiel 12:25 ).

Even in the book of Genesis, part of the phrase “it came to pass” is mentioned more than once: “And it came to pass at the end of forty days, that Noah opened the window of the ark which he had made” ( Genesis 8:6 ).

“And it came to pass in the six hundredth and first year, in the first month, the first day of the month, the waters were dried up from off the earth: and Noah removed the covering of the ark, and looked, and, behold, the face of the ground was dry” ( Genesis 8:13 ).

In some ways, we all hope that things in life will come to pass. Sometimes things in life we don't want to come pass come about anyway. Our hope may be so focused on how things will come to pass. We have this perspective on how we see certain circumstances coming to pass. But when those circumstances don't come the way we thought, we begin to question or lose hope. 

In the Bible, we see God's reassurance of this hope that he gives us. 

“For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen” ( 2 Corinthians 4:17-18 ).

“Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer” ( Romans 12:12 ).

“Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope” ( Romans 5:3-4 ).

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope” ( Romans 15:13 ).

Trust that God has the best plan for your life. Do not look at your circumstances, rather look to the God of hope.

We all have probably heard this phrase from time to time in our lives, usually said when someone is going through a troubling time or when you aren’t sure what to think about a situation’s outcome: the phrase “this too shall pass.” That might be the sentiment we all felt in the year 2020 where no one escaped the year unscathed and wondered how we would be able to move forward from this unbelievable time. Yet the phrase, “this too shall pass” seems appropriate while awaiting change in life, knowing that at some point any difficult matter will be in your rearview mirror instead of your windshield.

Many wonder if this phrase came from the pages of the Bible, maybe from the lips of the Lord Jesus Christ or one of His faithful disciples. Where did the phrase originate from, and how should we consult it as we enter a time of change? The answers lie ahead.

The Origins of 'This Too Shall Pass'

Let’s get to the heart of the matter: this exact phrase isn’t stated in the Bible. There are several verses that are very close to the wording, but the exact phrase of “this too shall pass” cannot be found in the pages of God’s Word.

According to an article from Christianity.com , the phrase may be pinpointed to a well-known figure within the biblical text, that of the wise King Solomon. There is an ancient Jewish story involving the king, where King Solomon wanted to humble his wisest of servants by asking him to find a magic ring that would make a sad person happy and a happy person sad. When the servant couldn’t find such a thing, King Solomon had a ring made bearing this phrase in Hebrew, “Gam ze ya’avor,” which means, “this too shall pass” (attributed to Israel Folklore Archive #126 ).

Some believe that this phrase may have conveyed to the king that “this,” meaning his fortune, will pass from him as well, which in some ways it did. One interpretation conveys that the servant was successful in his mission from King Solomon and presented him this ring with the inscription on it, thus surprising and unnerving the king in realizing his wealth would soon slip away.

Such a phrase gained traction over the years and was most famously stated by Abraham Lincoln in a speech he gave before the Wisconsin State Agricultural Society fair in 1859. Using the phrase, “this, too, shall pass away,” Lincoln was giving the speech before becoming president one year later in 1860, as he campaigned for free labor and education that could work together to facilitate agriculture. Two years later, while president, he signed a bill to set up the Department of Agriculture for the United States.

Are There Companion Verses to 'This Too Shall Pass'?

Though the phrase “this too shall pass” isn’t listed in the Bible, there are several verses that closely resemble this term and could be interpreted as sharing the same sentiment.

Most notably is 2 Corinthians 4:17-18 : For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far exceeding and eternal weight of glory, while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.

It can be seen that “our light affliction, which is but for a moment,” could easily be connected to “this too shall pass” in saying this issue we are dealing with now will soon be behind us. Many know the verse from 1 Corinthians 10:13 , reminding believers that temptations will not overtake us because, “ God is faithful , who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.”

You can see how “this too shall pass” can be connected to this verse in saying that with God being faithful and not giving you anything that will overwhelm you, whatever trying time you are in will have an escape for you so you can get through it. There are several other scriptures that resemble the understanding of “this too shall pass,” as an article from our very own Crosswalk.com features a more through glimpse into this phrase. Some include John 16:33 , Hebrews 13:6 , Romans 2:2-5 , and Philippians 3:8 , 12. Many also consider the book of Ecclesiastes, also penned by King Solomon, to exemplify even more that this phrase may have come out of his own life story.

I would think the book of Proverbs wouldn’t be too far behind in connection with “this too shall pass,” (also written by King Solomon) as there are countless reminders telling readers to trust God and His plan, knowing the difficult times will pass soon.

'This Too Shall Pass' in a New Season of Life

As we all enter into a new season of life, the thought of “this too shall pass” is probably coming to mind several times, or maybe is the choice phrase people want to tell you right now as we move forward into a new year and hopefully life out of a pandemic. What might be most important to consider with “this too shall pass” is to remember that trials are part of living life on earth and that God didn’t promise our road through life would be easy once we became Christians. If it isn’t being faced with deadly illnesses (ex: COVID-19), natural disasters, famine, or other issues on this planet, we also can contend with spiritual attacks that can make us doubt the God who loves us unconditionally.

Yet before you think it’s a never-ending series of trials, “this too shall pass” is to remind us that whatever trial staring us in the face right now, from big to small, it will eventually be behind us as we embrace God’s blessings and peace. We love and serve a God who created everything and has shown in His Word that He has already defeated the evil that was before us, is present with us and is ahead of us. Even if all you can focus on is eventually being with God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit in heaven, freed of the constraints of this fleshy life, it still means that you will pass through your current challenges and reach the blessing of heaven.

With a statement of “this too shall pass,” it isn’t surprising that most would believe the term is somehow written in the Bible, but in its exact phrase, it is not found in the Bible. Yet, the simple phrase has inspired many to remain hopeful in bleak conditions. The sentiment of “this too shall pass” can be found throughout the Bible in various verses, reminding readers that no matter the circumstances around us, there is hope ahead.

As we continue to progress into a new year and new changes ahead in life, whatever state you might be in right now, remind yourself that joy will return in the morning for us and God still sits on His throne.

However, the closest the Bible comes to saying this phrase is in Galatians 6:9, which says, “And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.”

However, the precise wording of ‘this too shall pass’ appears to stem from the writings of medieval Persian Sufi poets.

There is a citation of ‘this too shall pass’ in a writing from 1848. However, the reason that this Persian phrase is so widely known in the Western world has to do with the English poet Edward FitzGerald’s retelling of a Persian fable in the 19th century.   He retold the fable entitled “Solomon’s Seal” in 1852 and included the phrase ‘this too shall pass away.’

This fable is thought to originate in the works of Persian Sufi poets, such as Rumi , Attar of Nishapur, and Sanai. It told the story of a nameless “Eastern monarch.” The story goes that this king asked wise men to make him a ring that would make him happy when he was feeling sad. The sages, after much deliberation, gave him a ring with etched words reading, ‘this too shall pass.’ This did, in fact, make the king happy when he was feeling down.

Before Abraham Lincoln became the president of the United States, he also notably used this phrase in a speech. Here are the words he spoke:

"It is said an Eastern monarch once charged his wise men to invent him a sentence, to be ever in view, and which should be true and appropriate in all times and situations. They presented him the words: "And this, too, shall pass away." How much it expresses! How chastening in the hour of pride! How consoling in the depths of affliction!"

The same story shows up in the folklore of the Jewish tradition. At the University of Haifa, The Israel Folklore Archive has recorded many versions of the fable. In the Jewish versions of the story, Solomon is sometimes the one who delivers the adage to another person and other times the king that is humbled by it.

This Too Shall Pass by David Yuen

Continuing to share his altogether discerning, literary journey through life, author David Yuen supplies another artistic tour de force with his work in This Too Shall Pass. A thought-filled work that artfully presents an insightful collection of his poetry, prose, and essays, while inviting the mind, heart, and soul of readers to experience life from his decidedly intelligent and Christian perspective. Immediately, author Yuen engages the mindset with his stirring discourse, This Too Shall Pass, an essay that is also the title of the book. This well-known adage presents a penetrating and thoughtful look at the true experience of life’s events, which does well to set the poignant tone for the remainder of the book. Moreover, positing the general theme throughout the book that while change is inevitable whether good or bad there is always a reason for it and nothing that happens in life occurs and remains in a stage of permanent stasis but eventually will pass, as life is always a series of emotion rending fluxes. This essay is just the beginning of many well-written excerpts which show the impermanence of life’s events, while many of author Yuen’s poetic works serve to inspire, with elegant locutions embodying stalwart personal strength, morality, faith, and endurance.

Meanwhile, throughout the remainder of the book, there is a diversity of themes covered including multiple essays containing revelations on the Invasion of Ukraine, War in Ukraine, and the atrocities thereof. As well, author David Yuen also presents with eloquent articulation his personal experiences with COVID. Also, he presents many meditative works which flow like stream-of-consciousness narratives where he covers topics including; Fasting, Atrocity and Death, and Impermanence.

Additionally, the poetic works included are stellar intimations of reflection, as they are thoughtful, provoking, insightful, and fulfilling. While I enjoyed all his poetic entries a few remained with me, well after reading them; I Am Man See Me Stand; which engages the prowess of inner strength, All That Remain; which focuses on surviving adversity through maintaining a strong character, So Much So Little; demonstrates the character strengths and weaknesses of appreciation and disregard, My Fragile Foolish Self; embodies a stark look at negative perspectives. Albeit most of the included works were more of a serious nature, there is also included humor with A Poet Argues with His Coffee over Coffee, (this is my personal favorite).

Altogether, I enjoyed David Yuen’s expressive works in his book, This Too Shall Pass, the whole of his works this collection promotes faith in God’s hand in our lives, and although life can be imperfect, it is actually perfectly imperfect because God is always there teaching us through the perceived imperfections. This is a work of intellectual depth, both well-written and observant, which may bring about a change in perspective for readers toward life and all that it entails. As a whole, this luminous literary culmination penetrates the reading experience with lucidity and aplomb and I do highly recommend it.

was no consolation to the woman whose husband was strung out on opioids.

Gone to a better place : useless and suspect intel for the couple at their daughter’s funeral

though there are better places to be than a freezing church in February, standing

before a casket with a princess motif.  Some moments can’t be eased

and it’s no good offering clichés like stale meat to a tiger with a taste for human suffering.

When I hear the word miracle I want to throw up on a platter of deviled eggs. Everything happens

for a reason : more good tidings someone will try to trepan your skull to insert. When fire

inhales your house, you don’t care what the haiku says about seeing the rising moon. You want

an avalanche to bury you. You want to lie down under a slab of snow, dumb as a jarred

sideshow embryo. What a circus. The tents dismantled, the train moving on,

always moving, starting slow and gaining speed, taking you where you never wanted to go.
