ChatGPT for Research and Publication: A Step-by-Step Guide

Introduction

This commentary provides a concise step-by-step guide on using ChatGPT, an advanced natural language processing (NLP) model, for research and publication purposes. The guide assesses crucial aspects, including data preprocessing, fine-tuning techniques, prompt engineering, and ethical considerations. By addressing challenges related to biases, interpretability, and plagiarism, this commentary offers insights and recommendations for the responsible and ethical use of ChatGPT. The guide empowers researchers to ethically integrate ChatGPT effectively into their workflows, enhancing productivity and improving the quality of their scientific publications. Through clear instructions and guidelines, researchers can tap into the transformative potential of ChatGPT, driving scientific progress in a language-driven world.

In recent years, the field of NLP has witnessed remarkable advancements, bringing us closer to the realm of humanlike language generation. Among these advancements, ChatGPT, based on the groundbreaking GPT-3.5 architecture developed by OpenAI, stands as an impressive language model capable of generating coherent and contextually relevant text responses. With its ability to understand and respond to user inputs, ChatGPT has opened up new possibilities for various applications, including research and publication. 1 – 3

The traditional process of conducting research and publishing scientific papers has been significantly transformed by the emergence of ChatGPT. Researchers and authors can now leverage the power of this sophisticated language model to streamline and enhance their workflow, leading to improved efficiency and higher-quality publications. However, using ChatGPT effectively in the research and publication domain requires a comprehensive understanding of its capabilities, limitations, and best practices.

In this commentary I offer my thoughts for a step-by-step guide for researchers and authors who seek to harness the potential of ChatGPT in their research endeavors and publication efforts. By exploring various aspects, such as data preprocessing, fine-tuning techniques, prompt engineering, and ethical considerations, this guide will equip researchers with the necessary knowledge to harness the full potential of ChatGPT in their scientific pursuits. Moreover, this commentary will delve into the challenges associated with using ChatGPT for research and publication, including biases, interpretability, and concerns regarding plagiarism. By addressing these challenges directly, I aim to provide researchers with valuable insights and recommendations to navigate these important issues and ensure the responsible and ethical use of ChatGPT as a research tool. 4

The significance of my guide lies in its potential to bridge the gap between the rapid progress of language models like ChatGPT and the research and publication process. By elucidating the intricacies of integrating ChatGPT into scientific workflows, researchers will be empowered to leverage this advanced technology effectively, thereby enhancing the overall quality and impact of their research output. 5 In the following sections, I present a comprehensive overview of the steps involved in using ChatGPT for research and publication.

Step 1: Title and Title Page Creation by ChatGPT

ChatGPT can be a valuable tool in generating titles for research papers. Its ability to understand and generate humanlike text allows it to analyze and synthesize information provided by researchers to craft concise and impactful titles. By leveraging its vast knowledge base and language capabilities, ChatGPT can assist in capturing the essence of a research paper, conveying the main focus and contributions succinctly. Researchers can collaborate with ChatGPT by providing relevant information, such as the subject, objectives, methodology, and key findings of their study. ChatGPT can then generate multiple title options, offering different perspectives and angles that researchers can consider. This collaboration with ChatGPT can save time and stimulate creativity, helping researchers refine their titles to accurately represent their work and engage potential readers. ChatGPT can then be used to create the entire title page and then can also customize based on each journal’s recommendations.

Thus, we see that ChatGPT can write an entire title page based on just the title and author details. We notice that ChatGPT has created an email address that is incorrect and needs manual rectification. However, the rest of the title page, including keywords and the running title, is appropriate.

Step 2: Abstract/Summary Creation by chatGPT

ChatGPT can assist in condensing complex information into a clear and engaging abstract/summary, helping researchers communicate the significance and novelty of their research to a wider audience. By leveraging the language proficiency of ChatGPT, researchers can save time and effort in crafting abstracts while ensuring that the key aspects of their study are accurately represented.

In this example, we demonstrate that ChatGPT can create an entire abstract just by using the title alone. However, the more information researchers provide (preferably the entire body of the paper should be entered into chatGPT), the more accurate the abstract becomes.

Step 3: Introduction Creation by ChatGPT

By collaborating with ChatGPT, researchers can provide key information, such as the background, significance, and objectives of their study. ChatGPT can then generate a well-structured introduction that sets the context, highlights the relevance of the research, and outlines the paper’s objectives. Also, ChatGPT can be used to generate keywords and generate an abbreviations list from the article by using prompts. However, it is important to note that the generated introduction should be reviewed, customized, and refined by the researchers to align with their specific study and writing style.

In the example below, we note that ChatGPT has not only created an introduction but also the objectives of the study, which can then be edited by the human author.

Step 4: Can ChatGPT Create a Literature Review?

Yes, ChatGPT can help generate a literature review, but it is important to note that it may not have access to the most up-to-date research articles and studies due to copyrights and limited access to some journals. Additionally, a literature review typically requires a comprehensive analysis of multiple sources, so the generated response may not cover all relevant studies. Nonetheless, it can assist in providing a basic literature review on a given topic, which will need human authors to add to and edit it.

As we can see, ChatGPT is not as good at giving a detailed review of the literature as it is at summarizing contents or creating an introduction. Thus, its use is limited, if there is any at all, in this section of the paper.

Step 5: Can ChatGPT Assist in Brainstorming the Methodology of Studies?

ChatGPT can be a helpful tool in conceptualizing the methodology for research papers. By engaging in a conversation with ChatGPT, researchers can discuss their research objectives, study design, data collection methods, and data analysis techniques. ChatGPT’s natural language understanding allows it to provide suggestions and insights based on its knowledge base and understanding of research methodologies. Although ChatGPT can assist in generating ideas and providing guidance, it is important for researchers to critically evaluate and adapt the suggestions to align with their specific research goals and requirements.

Although the methodology is something that is unique to each paper and needs a human researcher to conceptualize it, we see in this example that ChatGPT can assist by giving ideas and examples based on the input of the title by the human researcher. Thus, ChatGPT can be part of brainstorming sessions when conceptualizing a study, although this section needs significant editing by a human, unlike the introduction or summary.

Step 6: Do Not Use ChatGPT for Fabricating Patient Data or Results!

This section of the paper must be authentic, and ChatGPT has a limited role, if any, because patient data have to be original. ChatGPT also currently cannot analyze clinical data compared with statistical software, like SPSS Statistics and Base SAS. However, Microsoft appears to be developing an Excel copilot that uses AI to create graphs and plots, and its use needs to be evaluated once it is released to the public. 6

Step 7: Discussion and Conclusions

This section of the paper can be generated by ChatGPT if all results are pasted as input; however, this section also needs manual editing because inaccuracies are common. By discussing their research with ChatGPT, researchers can also identify potential limitations, discuss the broader implications of their findings, and propose future research directions. Although ChatGPT can generate suggestions and facilitate the thought process, it is important for researchers to critically evaluate the information provided and ensure that the Discussion and Conclusion sections align with the specific research objectives and findings of their study. Ultimately, ChatGPT can serve as a supportive tool in developing a comprehensive and well-rounded discussion and conclusion for research papers.

Step 8: References

As per the author's experience, although ChatGPT is capable of creating references for an article, most of them are incorrect. So, using ChatGPT for creating references is not recommended. However, ChatGPT can convert references into any journaling style if the references are entered into ChatGPT and it is asked to convert them into a specific style.

Disadvantages of Using ChatGPT in Research

Although ChatGPT offers numerous advantages for assisting in the writing of research papers, there are also some important potential disadvantages to consider:

  • Lack of domain expertise: ChatGPT is a general-purpose language model trained on a diverse range of Internet text, which means it may lack the specific domain expertise required for certain research topics. It may generate responses that are not accurate or well informed in specialized fields, potentially leading to incorrect or misleading information in research papers.
  • Inconsistency and variability: ChatGPT’s responses can be inconsistent and vary depending on the input phrasing or prompt formulation. This can lead to unpredictability in generating reliable and coherent content, requiring additional effort to refine and ensure accuracy in research papers.
  • Limited control over output: Although researchers can guide the model’s responses through prompts, ChatGPT’s generation process is still primarily autonomous. Researchers have limited control over the precise content and structure of the generated text, which may require careful editing and review to align with specific research goals, standards, and above all, accuracy.
  • Biases and ethical considerations: Language models like ChatGPT can inadvertently reflect biases present in the training data. These biases may perpetuate existing societal or cultural biases in research papers, potentially leading to unfair or discriminatory content. The careful examination and mitigation of biases are crucial to ensure ethical and unbiased research output. 7
  • Lack of interpretability: ChatGPT’s decision-making process is complex and not easily interpretable. Researchers may struggle to understand the reasoning behind the model’s generated responses, making it challenging to assess the reliability and credibility of the information provided. Ensuring transparency and interpretability in research papers becomes more challenging with such models. ChatGPT should cite the sources for its data, like Google Bard does.
  • Plagiarism concerns: Because of its vast training data from the Internet, ChatGPT may inadvertently generate text that resembles or replicates existing content without proper citation or attribution. Researchers must be cautious about unintentional plagiarism and ensure that generated content is appropriately referenced and original. So, all ChatGPt-generated articles need to be double checked using antiplagiarism software.

In this commentary I have provided a comprehensive step-by-step guide for researchers and authors on harnessing the power of ChatGPT in the realm of research and publication. By exploring crucial aspects, such as data preprocessing, fine-tuning techniques, prompt engineering, and ethical considerations, the guide equips researchers with the necessary knowledge and tools to effectively integrate ChatGPT into their scientific workflows. 8

Through clear instructions, examples, and guidelines, researchers can navigate the complexities of using ChatGPT, leading to enhanced productivity and improved quality in their research output. However, and to reiterate, I cannot overemphasize that ChatGPT has, at present, many disadvantages, including inconsistencies, bias, and plagiarism concerns, that must be addressed by the human author before the article is submitted for publication to a journal, as well as prior to publication, because the human author(s) is solely responsible for their research integrity and accurate reporting.

In conclusion, I have attempted to provide researchers with a comprehensive understanding of how to effectively leverage ChatGPT for research and publication purposes. It has also highlighted the problems and precautions that the human author(s) must take before publishing ChatGPT-generated content. By embracing this step-by-step guide, researchers can unlock the full potential of ChatGPT, driving scientific progress and shaping the future of research and publications.

ChatGPT is often thought of as a tool that will replace human work on tasks such as writing papers for students or professionals. But ChatGPT can also be used to support human work, and research is an excellent example. 

Whether you're working on a research paper for school or doing market research for your job, initiating the research process and finding the correct sources can be challenging and time-consuming.

ChatGPT and other AI chatbots can help by curtailing the amount of time spent finding sources, allowing you to jump more quickly to the actual reading and research portion of your work.

Picking the right chatbot 

Before we get started, it's important to understand the limitations of using ChatGPT . Because ChatGPT is not connected to the internet, it will not be able to give you access to information or resources after 2021, and it will also not be able to provide you with a direct link to the source of the information.

Being able to ask a chatbot to provide you with links for the topic you are interested in is very valuable. If you'd like to do that, I recommend using a chatbot connected to the internet, such as Bing Chat , Claude , ChatGPT Plus , or Perplexity . 

This how-to guide will use ChatGPT as an example of how prompts can be used, but the principles are the same for whichever chatbot you choose.

1. Brainstorm

When you're assigned research papers, the general topic area is generally assigned, but you'll be required to identify the exact topic you want to pick for your paper or research. ChatGPT can help with the brainstorming process by suggesting ideas or even tweaking your own.

For this sample research paper, I will use the general topic of "Monumental technological inventions that caused pivotal changes in history." If I didn't have a specific idea to write about, I would tell ChatGPT the general theme of the assignment with as much detail as possible and ask it for some proposals. 

My prompt: I have to write a research paper on "Monumental technological inventions that caused pivotal changes in history." It needs to be ten pages long and source five different primary sources. Can you help me think of a specific topic? 

As seen by the screenshot (below), ChatGPT produced 10 viable topics, including "The Printing Press and the Spread of Knowledge", "The Internet and the Digital Age", "The Telegraph and the Communication Revolution", and more.

You can then follow up with ChatGPT to ask for further information. You can even tweak these topics with an angle you like more, and continue the feedback loop until you have a topic you are settled on. 

2. Generate an outline

Once you have selected a topic, you can ask ChatGPT to generate an outline, including as much detail for your assignment as possible. For this example, I used the first topic that ChatGPT suggested in the previous step.

My prompt: Can you give me an outline for a research paper that is ten pages long and needs to use five primary sources on this topic, "The Printing Press and the Spread of Knowledge"? 

ChatGPT generated a 13-point outline that carefully described the areas I should touch on in my paper, as seen in the photo (above). You can then use this outline to structure your paper and use the points to find sources, using ChatGPT as delineated below. 

3. Tell ChatGPT your topic and ask for sources

Now that you have a topic and outline established, you can ask ChatGPT about the topic of your project and ask it to deliver sources for you.

My prompt: Can you give me sources for a ten-page long paper on this topic, "The Printing Press and the Spread of Knowledge"?

ChatGPT outputs a list of five primary and five secondary sources that you can include in your paper. Remember, because ChatGPT can't give you internet links, you will need to seek out the specific resources on your own, whether that's Googling or visiting your school library.

When I asked Bing Chat the same question, it provided sources with clickable links that you can use to access the material you need quicker. For that reason, I would use Bing Chat for this step. 

4. Describe a specific idea and ask for sources

Instead of describing the whole topic, you can also use a chatbot to find sources for a specific aspect of your paper.

For example, I asked ChatGPT for sources for a specific bullet in the paper outline that it generated above. 

My prompt: Can you give me sources for the social and intellectual climate of when the printing press was generated?

As in the prior example, ChatGPT generated five primary and five secondary resources for the topic. 

Using this feature for smaller chunks of your essay is a good alternative because it gives you more options on sources and provides tailored insight that you can use to carefully craft your piece. 

5. Ask for examples of a specific incident

I use this prompt a lot in my workflow because I can sometimes remember that something specific happened, but can't pinpoint what it was or when it happened. 

This tool can also be used when you need to find a specific example to support your topic.

In both cases, you can ask ChatGPT to help you identify a specific event or time period, and incorporate those details in your article. 

In our essay example, if I wanted to include a rebuttal and delineate a time when implementing technology had negative impacts, but couldn't think of an incident on my own, I could ask ChatGPT to help me identify one.

My prompt: What was a time in history when implementing technology backfired on society and had negative impacts?

Within seconds, ChatGPT generated 10 examples of incidents that I could weave into the research as a rebuttal. 

6. Generate citations

Creating a page of the works you cited, although valuable and necessary for integrity, is a pain. Now, you can ask ChatGPT to generate citations for you by simply dropping the link or the title of the work, and asking it to create a citation in the style of your paper.

I asked ChatGPT to generate a citation for this article for ZDNET. As seen by the photo (above), the tool asked me to include the access date and the style for the citation, and then quickly generated a complete citation for the piece.

How to Use ChatGPT Effectively as a Researcher

Unless you’ve recently been hiding under a rock, you’re probably aware of the hype surrounding generative AI platforms and specifically ChatGPT. But you may not have considered how to effectively make use of this new tool as a researcher.

In this post we’ll explore how you can harness the full potential of ChatGPT to streamline your research process. From practical use cases and tips on mastering prompt engineering, to the ethics of AI assistance.

So, let’s dive in and discover how to use ChatGPT effectively as a researcher!

Sidenote – Honestly, I was slightly skeptical before writing this, however having tested it for the examples in this article I’m now impressed and plan to make use of it myself! It does have its limitations but I still see a value in making use of tools such as ChatGPT.

What is ChatGPT?

A brief overview of generative ai.

Before we discuss ChatGPT, I just want to briefly touch on the wider topic of generative AI. I constantly see headlines about generative AI in the news and on LinkedIn, and as a researcher it’s useful to be aware of what’s happening in this space.

Generative AI is artificial intelligence that is capable of creating content, whether that be text, audio, images, videos or other media (slideshows etc). Until the last few years, when AI tried to create things it usually wasn’t that great and there were no fears from creatives that their own work could ever be matched, but recently that’s all started to change.

Generative AI works by using existing content as a reference point and learning from it to make its own creations. But as it’s learning from work which humans created in the first place, that’s given rise to concerns around copyright and the urgent need for regulation. It also raises concerns around jobs, as seen with the strikes in America. Actors have raised concerns around unauthorised use of their images by AI and writers are worried about scripts being AI generated.

Things are moving quickly, but on a personal level I find it incredibly exciting that there are so many generative AI tools emerging that can allow anyone easily to realise their ideas, even if you have limited skills in a particular area. It’s becoming easier than ever to bring an idea to life.

I’d encourage all of you to keep an eye out as new generative AI tools are announced, to consider if they could have a role in assisting with your work. Beyond ChatGPT and other text-based tools, there are many generative tools for creating presentations, images, logos and more.

An Intro to ChatGPT

So, where does ChatGPT fit in with all of this? Well ChatGPT is a conversational tool based on an advanced large language model designed to generate human-like text responses. In simple terms, you write a question and it will write a response.

It’s by no means the only large language model, but as of the date of writing it’s certainly the most well known. Another large language model you may have heard of is Bard from Google. For those who use the Bing search engine you may have also spotted BingGPT and this is built on top of the same technology as ChatGPT.

Each of these AI models has been trained on a vast body of text and they act as a reasoning engine. They take your question, work out what you’re asking and then formulate an answer to your query. It’s important to be aware that they can only provide responses based on the text they were trained on. Therefore, if that text contained any inaccuracies they will relate that information, as there’s no way for them to verify whether it’s true.

ChatGPT can write everything from poems and articles, to travel itineraries. It can also format information into tables.

You can currently access ChatGPT3.5 for free or you can pay to access ChatGPT4, which has an expanded knowledge of events beyond September 2021.

Prompt Engineering

To make the most of ChatGPT’s capabilities, it’s essential to master the art of prompt engineering.

A prompt is the text you provide to ChatGPT in order to request it to perform a task. This could be as simple as “Write 5 puns about cats”.

Not bad… especially considering it came up with them in less than four seconds!

But while simple prompts can be tempting to use, to increase the likelihood that ChatGPT can answer your question effectively it’s worth investing some time in crafting your prompts. This will greatly influence the chance that the responses meet your specific need.

There are loads of guides and courses popping up specifically for prompt engineering but here are four best practices for creating effective prompts:

  • Be Clear and Specific: Make sure that your request is clear, with no room for ambiguity. The more specific you are, the better ChatGPT can understand and address your needs.
  • Break Down Questions: Have a complex query? Consider breaking it down into simpler sub-questions. This helps ChatGPT to provide more accurate responses by addressing each component of your question individually.
  • Provide Context: Adding relevant context to your prompt helps ChatGPT better understand your intentions and generate responses aligned with your requirements. This could involve explaining who you are (e.g. a researcher) and what you need the answers for (e.g. you’re planning an experiment).
  • Experiment and Iterate: If ChatGPT doesn’t get it right on the first try, have another go. As it stores the memory of your conversation you can have a back and forth dialogue until you manage to secure the answers you’re looking for.

Remember, if you don’t like the result you can very easily iterate, making small tweaks to the wording of the prompt to get the desired outcome.

It’s also important to make use of the ability to have a conversation with ChatGPT, asking follow-on questions to drill down and gain a better understanding. We’ll go through an example of this shortly.

Now that we’ve discussed prompt engineering, let’s dive into some practical use cases for how you could use ChatGPT effectively during your research.

How to Use ChatGPT Effectively As a Researcher

Here are five ways you could leverage ChatGPT as a researcher:

Writing Assistance

Whether you’re drafting a thesis chapter, a research paper, or a conference abstract, ChatGPT could provide valuable assistance. Share your rough drafts or specific sections and seek input on sentence structure, paragraph coherence, grammar, or even suggestions for more effective arguments. ChatGPT could be a virtual writing partner, offering a fresh pair of eyes and helping you to refine your work.

This also applies to creating catchy titles for your research paper. Feed in your abstract and receive suggestions for the title. For example, I fed it an abstract of a paper I recently had accepted and asked for it to suggest a title for me.

Needless to say, I’m impressed!

Important: Just be mindful to not share any information that you don’t want stored by OpenAI.

Literature Review and Knowledge Expansion

Navigating through the vast expanse of academic literature can be overwhelming. However ChatGPT can serve as your personal research assistant, helping you to conduct literature reviews, summarising relevant papers and identifying key concepts within your field.

Since you can converse back and forth with ChatGPT, you can ask for clarification. For example, I asked why these articles in particular were important to read:

Although hallucinations are a very real thing you need to be aware of when using tools such as ChatGPT, I have found that it can often provide useful information when it can’t provide a solid answer:

ChatGPT can help to broaden your understanding, potentially enabling you to discover new perspectives and explore connections between various research studies. But always remember to critically evaluate and verify the information provided by ChatGPT and don’t use it as your only source for papers.

As mentioned earlier it’s also worth being aware that the free version currently only includes content up to September 2021, so you’ll have to look elsewhere (or pay) for content from the last few years.

Experiment Design

Designing rigorous experiments is integral to many research projects and it turns out this is another area where ChatGPT can come in useful.

ChatGPT can help you to refine your research methodology by suggesting alternative approaches, highlighting potential pitfalls, or offering recommendations based on existing studies. It can also provide an overview of considerations and required methods for conducting certain types of experiments.

Engaging with ChatGPT can help you to optimise your experiment design and ensure robust results.

However, it is still crucial to consult with your supervisor and colleagues to ensure the validity and reliability of your proposed research approach.

Presentation Preparation

Whether you’re getting ready for a conference presentation or your PhD viva, ChatGPT can help you to prepare effectively by suggesting common questions you may receive.

It can also share tips on how to communicate complex topics to audiences who may not share your in-depth understanding.

Skill Developmen t

If you’re anything like me you’ll constantly be keen to acquire new skills and knowledge. ChatGPT can help by recommending relevant books, online courses, or research articles. You can also engage in discussions with ChatGPT to deepen your understanding of tricky concepts or seek explanations on topics outside of your area of expertise.

For example, one potential prompt for ChatGPT could be:

These examples are just some of the many ways for how to use ChatGPT effectively as a researcher. I’m sure you’ll come up with plenty of your own use cases too!

The Ethics of Using ChatGPT as a Researcher

Before using ChatGPT to assist your research it is important to consider the ethical implications of incorporating AI assistance.

Here are some key considerations to keep in mind:

  • Acceptable usage : Before you use ChatGPT for a certain purpose, check that you’re okay to use it for that purpose. For instance, using it as an editing tool for drafts of your thesis might not be acceptable at your university. Also some journals have statements around acceptable use of tools such as ChatGPT. If you’re unsure, do your research and speak to your supervisor.
  • Academic Integrity: While ChatGPT can be an invaluable tool, it is important to uphold academic integrity by clearly distinguishing between your original work and the contributions made by ChatGPT. Ensure that you give proper credit to ChatGPT or any other AI assistance utilised in your research when appropriate.
  • Transparency and Bias: AI models like ChatGPT are trained on vast amounts of data which can be subject to inherent biases, these can carry through to ChatGPT’s responses. Be aware of potential biases and critically evaluate the information provided by ChatGPT. It is crucial to verify the accuracy of the generated content with reliable sources.
  • Data Privacy: When interacting with ChatGPT, be mindful of the information you share. Avoid sharing sensitive research data or personally identifiable information, as the conversations may be stored or analysed.
  • Responsible Use: ChatGPT can be a great tool to assist your research efforts, but do not rely solely on its outputs. Exercise critical thinking and maintain a balanced approach. Engage in discussions with colleagues and your supervisor to validate any insights gained.

Also be sure to check if your university has a policy around the use of generative AI. This will be the best guide of where it is and isn’t appropriate to make use of it. Here is an example of one from Imperial and another from Bristol .

Conclusion: How to Use ChatGPT Effectively

ChatGPT can be a helpful tool to assist you with your research. By mastering prompt engineering and following best practices, you can effectively utilise ChatGPT as a valuable resource for writing assistance, literature reviews, experiment design and skill development. However, ChatGPT should only be used to supplement your own expertise and critical thinking.

Incorporating AI assistance into your research process also comes with ethical considerations. It’s vital to uphold academic integrity by being transparent about AI contributions, critically evaluating the generated content and respecting data privacy. By using ChatGPT responsibly, you can leverage its power while ensuring the integrity and rigor of your research.

It’s an intriguing new addition to our research toolkits and I’m personally really excited to explore its potential!

Module 1: Exploring ChatGPT in Research and Education

How did we come here, where are we headed.

If you have Internet access, I’m willing to bet this is not the first time you heard about ChatGPT. It’s all over Twitter, LinkedIn, and, as students, educators, and researchers more and more adapt the tool, it’s in classrooms and scientific journals.

A large language model trained to chat in a way humans are used to, ChatGPT offers immense potential for students, educators, and researchers. Students, educators, and researchers need to learn how to make the most out of this tool, respecting some foundational principles we have collectively crafted both in education and research; while shedding some practices that might not serve us anymore in this new era of knowledge transfer and dissemination.

To that end, let’s first learn about the candle to understand the light bulb.

Human-generated Ideas That Lead to Generative AI

Humans have been obsessed with machines doing things for us since at least as far back as Ancient Greece . The main motivation behind this obsession has been our desire to do as little as possible for as much work as possible. Starting with the domestication of plants and animals, we have exploited the natural, horses for transportation and trees for heating are two examples. With the discovery of other forms of energy such as the magnetic field and electricity, we gained the ability to exploit the artificial, AKA electronic devices such as the computer.

Machines either amplified what we already could do (microscopes and telescopes helped us see the tiny or the far away) or they gave us the ability to do what we couldn’t (planes helped us fly). We also wanted machines to do what we could and maybe more. As far back as the 18th century, people tried to create devices that could produce human sounds , and later, with the invention of computers, tried to emulate human dialogue, as in the case of ELIZA , a bot that manipulates the language input by a human and twists the statement to form a question with words such as “I” replaced with “you”, and throws it back at the human, which gives it the illusion of understanding human speech.

However, maybe until a couple of years ago, most of us didn’t think computers could achieve cognitive tasks, let alone use natural language, almost indiscernible from the way we use it. Computers, after all, were very good at executing tasks that could be expressed in formal language, a set of unambiguous instructions, whereas the language we use is natural language, polysemous and often ambiguous. The more nuanced and semantically flexible nature of natural languages meant that machines couldn’t process them. That is, until natural language processing matured enough.

We observe that attempts were made to make computers intelligent in the 1950s , with neural networks, each neuron a mathematical function that can talk to other neurons; but we didn’t have the computational power or data necessary to fully make use of this new approach. As a result, they didn’t gain traction. Not until computers became more powerful, and data abundant (particularly in the 2000s), did people start to realize that with neural networks complex tasks could be achieved. Having computers analyze data, find patterns, and generate data similar to the data they have seen was finally possible. Since language has many of these patterns (once impossible to capture fully by formal, rule-based systems), the new methods in machine learning such as the transformer model  coupled with super-powerful computers have led to language models that could produce and understand natural language.

ChatGPT Entered the Chat

As big organizations such as Google and Stanford University built artificially intelligent systems for their own purposes, a company that wanted to open up such systems to “benefit all of humanity” was born. That company was, and still is, OpenAI. In 2018, OpenAI published the paper where they introduced the Generative Pre-trained Transformer system (GPT), a large language model that was able to generate textual data and was pre- trained on a very large corpus, built on the transformer model Google scientists describe in their revolutionary paper “Attention is All You Need.” This pre-trained model was then trained further to chat like a human in a positive reinforcement and punishment fashion that many social scientists would find familiar. And just like that, ChatGPT entered the chat.

And soon ChatGPT exploded in popularity . This popularity was partly thanks to its omnipresence enabled by the Internet and an intuitive interface that looked like any instant messaging app. For me, the biggest factor in ChatGPT’s popularity was that something about this tool spoke to our desire to create a human-like machine.

Bridging the Gap: ChatGPT in Research and Education

As ChatGPT gained traction in various domains, its applications in research and education became increasingly evident. Educators, researchers, and students have started to explore the potential of ChatGPT as a tool for transforming traditional practices in various ways. Educators used it to enhance their teaching . Researchers put a bunch of ChatGPT’s with different personalities and watched the way they interacted . One of my students used it to create a YouTube video about ChatGPT helping a student write the perfect essay and won an award for it.

Revolutionizing Research: Simulating Complex Social Phenomena

One of the most significant applications of ChatGPT in research is its ability to simulate complex social phenomena, enabling researchers to study human behavior with unprecedented precision. By generating realistic scenarios, ChatGPT allows for the exploration of social learning, observational learning, and imitation in controlled settings, much like the classic experiments of Solomon Asch and Albert Bandura.

As computational social science gains momentum, ChatGPT facilitates the analysis of social systems, helping researchers test hypotheses and uncover new social patterns. In this sense, ChatGPT is analogous to the impact of statistical software packages like SPSS and R, which have transformed the way researchers analyze and interpret data. ChatGPT can be used to help explain data to the researchers within the web app, or write code in R to analyze data.

Enhancing Education: Personalized Learning Experiences

ChatGPT’s potential is not limited to research; it also holds the promise of reshaping education. By leveraging AI-driven personalization, educators can create customized learning experiences tailored to each student’s unique needs and strengths. This can lead to improved educational outcomes and reduced achievement gaps.

Moreover, AI-generated scenarios enable students to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills by exposing them to diverse perspectives and complex situations. It is as easy as asking ChatGPT to provide two different perspectives on a topic. For instance, in my multimodal rhetorical class, I asked ChatGPT to provide debate topics about AI and provide two different viewpoints for each topic. My students, then, voted on one topic and chose one side to further debate the topic voted.

Navigating Ethical Considerations: A Responsible Path Forward

The responsible use of ChatGPT in research and education requires addressing potential ethical concerns. Researchers must ensure that AI-generated scenarios do not inadvertently perpetuate stereotypes or reinforce harmful beliefs. Data privacy and informed consent must also be considered when using AI-generated content in research and education.

One major concern regarding ChatGPT's use in research and education is that it can come between the student and teacher or literature and researcher, potentially leading to misinterpretations or misunderstandings. Additionally, the widespread use of ChatGPT may result in a loss of uniqueness and personality in writing, as the model tends to generate content in a more homogenized manner.

We will discuss similar concerns and address criticism, such as that from Dr. Chomsky, Dr. Roberts, and Dr. Watumull , in the upcoming posts.

For now, let us remember the simple fact we have taught and conducted research with less powerful tools. Let us also remember that the telescope that will let us see some of the first galaxies in our universe started with a telescope that helped us barely make out the mountains on our moon . As we integrate conversational agents such as ChatGPT into our current practices, these challenges should not deter us from harnessing the potential of ChatGPT.

By embracing this technology and addressing its ethical implications, we can usher in a new era of knowledge production, personalized education, and AI-enhanced human-directed science.

However, we advise against using it to find sources directly. It’s not designed for this and, if asked to do it, often just creates fake sources and presents them as real. Search a database like Google Scholar instead.

As we’ve stated earlier, under no condition should you ask ChatGPT to write your whole essay for you. Not only is that lazy and deceitful, but it could also open you up to plagiarism and submitting incorrect information.

Ensure that every line in your essay is typed with your hands. Besides, if you’re writing an academic essay where you must cite sources, you will still need to corroborate all the points you’ve made with a corresponding authority. That means you’ll have to go and fact-check everything ChatGPT has written and find a corroborating source.

This could even take more time than just writing it yourself because the AI could have hallucinated some of its facts, leading you on a wild goose chase as you try to find a citation for something that doesn’t exist.

Lastly, ChatGPT doesn’t match the nuanced knowledge of a human professional in heavily specialized fields or journals that need up-to-date information. Reading a book or article by an expert, internalizing it, and writing it in your own words will give you far better results than relying on ChatGPT.

7. Polish the Style and Citation With ChatGPT

After writing, you can paste portions of your essay and ask ChatGPT to shorten, lengthen, or optimize the style. ChatGPT is good at mimicking popular styles, and you can use that to your advantage. If you want your writing to sound a little more professional, it can help rephrase it.

If you’re having trouble with citation styles and how to integrate them into your essay, you can present your essay to ChatGPT, give it your sources, and ask it to weld them together for you.

ChatGPT Is a Tool, Not a Solution

You can’t “ChatGPT” away academic or professional work; you must use it the same way you would use a tool. Take a calculator, for instance; it doesn’t replace the mathematician but improves the mathematician. You should use ChatGPT the same way a mathematician will use a calculator: for the boring, repetitive, rote work.

Let the ideas and story come from you and your experiences. And if you want to keep using ChatGPT as a student, make sure you know what you shouldn't do.

ChatGPT for keyword research can be a powerful assistant. Understand any topic for keyword research in minutes with these prompts.

Anyone not using ChatGPT for keyword research is missing a trick.

You can save time and understand an entire topic in seconds instead of hours.

In this article, I outline my most effective ChatGPT prompts for keyword research and teach you how I put them together so that you, too, can take, edit, and enhance them even further.

But before we jump into the prompts, I want to emphasize that you shouldn’t replace keyword research tools or disregard traditional keyword research methods .

ChatGPT can make mistakes. It can even create new keywords if you give it the right prompt. For example, I asked it to provide me with a unique keyword for the topic “SEO” that had never been searched before.

“ Interstellar Internet SEO : Optimizing content for the theoretical concept of an interstellar internet, considering the challenges of space-time and interplanetary communication delays.”

Although I want to jump into my LinkedIn profile and update my title to “Interstellar Internet SEO Consultant,” unfortunately, no one has searched that (and they probably never will)!

You must not blindly rely on the data you get back from ChatGPT.

What you can rely on ChatGPT for is the topic ideation stage of keyword research and inspiration.

ChatGPT is a large language model trained with massive amounts of data to accurately predict what word will come next in a sentence. However, it does not know how to do keyword research yet.

Instead, think of ChatGPT as having an expert on any topic armed with the information if you ask it the right question.

In this guide, that is exactly what I aim to teach you how to do – the most essential prompts you need to know when performing topical keyword research .

Best ChatGPT Keyword Research Prompts

The following ChatGPT keyword research prompts can be used on any niche, even a topic to which you are brand new.

For this demonstration, let’s use the topic of “ SEO ” to demonstrate these prompts.

Generating Keyword Ideas Based On A Topic

What are the {x} most popular sub-topics related to {topic}.

The first prompt is to give you an idea of the niche.

As shown above, ChatGPT did a great job understanding and breaking down SEO into three pillars: on-page , off-page & technical .

The key to the following prompt is to take one of the topics ChatGPT has given and query the sub-topics.

What Are The {X} Most Popular Sub-topics Related To {Sub-topic}?

For this example, let’s query, “What are the most popular sub-topics related to keyword research?”

Having done keyword research for over 10 years, I would expect it to output information related to keyword research metrics, the types of keywords, and intent .

Let’s see.

Again, right on the money.

To get the keywords you want without having ChatGPT describe each answer, use the prompt “list without description.”

Here is an example of that.

You can even branch these keywords out further into their long-tail .

You can even ask ChatGPT what any topic’s semantically related keywords and entities are!

Tip: The Onion Method Of Prompting ChatGPT

When you are happy with a series of prompts, add them all to one prompt. For example, so far in this article, we have asked ChatGPT the following:

  • What are the four most popular sub-topics related to SEO?
  • What are the four most popular sub-topics related to keyword research
  • List without description the top five most popular keywords for “keyword intent”?
  • List without description the top five most popular long-tail keywords for the topic “keyword intent types”?
  • List without description the top semantically related keywords and entities for the topic “types of keyword intent in SEO.”

Combine all five into one prompt by telling ChatGPT to perform a series of steps. Example:

“Perform the following steps in a consecutive order Step 1, Step 2, Step 3, Step 4, and Step 5”
“Perform the following steps in a consecutive order Step 1, Step 2, Step 3, Step 4 and Step 5. Step 1 – Generate an answer for the 3 most popular sub-topics related to {Topic}?. Step 2 – Generate 3 of the most popular sub-topics related to each answer. Step 3 – Take those answers and list without description their top 3 most popular keywords. Step 4 – For the answers given of their most popular keywords, provide 3 long-tail keywords. Step 5 – for each long-tail keyword offered in the response, a list without descriptions 3 of their top semantically related keywords and entities.”

Generating Keyword Ideas Based On A Question

Taking the steps approach from above, we can get ChatGPT to help streamline getting keyword ideas based on a question. For example, let’s ask, “ What is SEO? ”

“Perform the following steps in a consecutive order Step 1, Step 2, Step 3, and Step 4. Step 1 Generate 10 questions about “{Question}”?. Step 2 – Generate 5 more questions about “{Question}” that do not repeat the above. Step 3 – Generate 5 more questions about “{Question}” that do not repeat the above. Step 4 – Based on the above Steps 1,2,3 suggest a final list of questions avoiding duplicates or semantically similar questions.”

Generating Keyword Ideas Using ChatGPT Based On The Alphabet Soup Method

One of my favorite methods, manually, without even using a keyword research tool, is to generate keyword research ideas from Google autocomplete , going from A to Z.

Example prompt:

“give me popular keywords that includes the keyword “SEO”, and the next letter of the word starts with a”

“Give me five popular keywords that include “SEO” in the word, and the following letter starts with a. Once the answer has been done, move on to giving five more popular keywords that include “SEO” for each letter of the alphabet b to z.”

Generating Keyword Ideas Based On User Personas

When it comes to keyword research, understanding user personas is essential for understanding your target audience and keeping your keyword research focused and targeted. ChatGPT may help you get an initial understanding of customer personas.

“For the topic of “{Topic}” list 10 keywords each for the different types of user personas”

You could even go a step further and ask for questions based on those topics that those specific user personas may be searching for:

Generating Keyword Ideas Using ChatGPT Based On Searcher Intent And User Personas

Understanding the keywords your target persona may be searching is the first step to effective keyword research. The next step is to understand the search intent behind those keywords and which content format may work best.

For example, a business owner who is new to SEO or has just heard about it may be searching for “what is SEO.”

However, if they are further down the funnel and in the navigational stage, they may search for “top SEO firms.”

You can query ChatGPT to inspire you here based on any topic and your target user persona.

SEO Example:

“For the topic of “{Topic}” list 10 keywords each for the different types of searcher intent that a {Target Persona} would be searching for”

ChatGPT For Keyword Research Admin

Here is how you can best use ChatGPT for keyword research admin tasks.

Using ChatGPT As A Keyword Categorization Tool

One of the use cases for using ChatGPT is for keyword categorization .

In the past, I would have had to devise spreadsheet formulas to categorize keywords or even spend hours filtering and manually categorizing keywords.

ChatGPT can be a great companion for running a short version of this for you.

Let’s say you have done keyword research in a keyword research tool, have a list of keywords, and want to categorize them.

You could use the following prompt:

“Filter the below list of keywords into categories, target persona, searcher intent, search volume and add information to a six-column table: List of keywords – [LIST OF KEYWORDS], Keyword Search Volume [SEARCH VOLUMES] and Keyword Difficulties [KEYWORD DIFFICUTIES].”

Using Chat GPT as a Keyword Categorization Tool

Tip : Add keyword metrics from the keyword research tools, as using the search volumes that a ChatGPT prompt may give you will be wildly inaccurate at best.

Using ChatGPT For Keyword Clustering

Another of ChatGPT’s use cases for keyword research is to help you cluster . Many keywords have the same intent, and by grouping related keywords, you may find that one piece of content can often target multiple keywords at once.

However, be careful not to rely only on LLM data for clustering. What ChatGPT may cluster as a similar keyword, the SERP or the user may not agree with. But it is a good starting point.

The big downside of using ChatGPT for keyword clustering is actually the amount of keyword data you can cluster based on the memory limits.

So, you may find a keyword clustering tool or script that is better for large keyword clustering tasks. But for small amounts of keywords, ChatGPT is actually quite good.

A great use small keyword clustering use case using ChatGPT is for grouping People Also Ask (PAA) questions.

Use the following prompt to group keywords based on their semantic relationships. For example:

“Organize the following keywords into groups based on their semantic relationships, and give a short name to each group: [LIST OF PAA], create a two-column table where each keyword sits on its own row.

Using Chat GPT For Keyword Clustering

Using Chat GPT For Keyword Expansion By Patterns

One of my favorite methods of doing keyword research is pattern spotting.

Most seed keywords have a variable that can expand your target keywords.

Here are a few examples of patterns:

1. Question Patterns

(who, what, where, why, how, are, can, do, does, will)

“Generate [X] keywords for the topic “[Topic]” that contain any or all of the following “who, what, where, why, how, are, can, do, does, will”

“Generate 50 keywords for the topic “{Topic}” that contain any or all of the following “for, vs, alternative, best, top, review”

3. Brand Patterns

Another one of my favorite modifiers is a keyword by brand.

We are probably all familiar with the most popular SEO brands; however, if you aren’t, you could ask your AI friend to do the heavy lifting.

“For the top {Topic} brands what are the top “vs” keywords”

4. Search Intent Patterns

One of the most common search intent patterns is “best.”

When someone is searching for a “best {topic}” keyword, they are generally searching for a comprehensive list or guide that highlights the top options, products, or services within that specific topic, along with their features, benefits, and potential drawbacks, to make an informed decision.

“For the topic of “[Topic]” what are the 20 top keywords that include “best”

Again, this guide to keyword research using ChatGPT has emphasized the ease of generating keyword research ideas by utilizing ChatGPT throughout the process.

Keyword Research Using ChatGPT Vs. Keyword Research Tools

Free vs. paid keyword research tools.

Like keyword research tools, ChatGPT has free and paid options.

However, one of the most significant drawbacks of using ChatGPT for keyword research alone is the absence of SEO metrics to help you make smarter decisions.

To improve accuracy, you could take the results it gives you and verify them with your classic keyword research tool – or vice versa, as shown above, uploading accurate data into the tool and then prompting.

However, you must consider how long it takes to type and fine-tune your prompt to get your desired data versus using the filters within popular keyword research tools.

For example, if we use a popular keyword research tool using filters, you could have all of the “best” queries with all of their SEO metrics:

And unlike ChatGPT, generally, there is no token limit; you can extract several hundred, if not thousands, of keywords at a time.

As I have mentioned multiple times throughout this piece, you cannot blindly trust the data or SEO metrics it may attempt to provide you with.

The key is to validate the keyword research with a keyword research tool.

ChatGPT For International SEO Keyword Research

ChatGPT can be a terrific multilingual keyword research assistant.

For example, if you wanted to research keywords in a foreign language such as French. You could ask ChatGPT to translate your English keywords;

But don’t worry, there is a workaround: If you have access to a competitor keyword research tool, you can see what webpage is ranking for that query – and then identify the top keyword for that page based on the ChatGPT translated keywords that do have search volume.

Or, if you don’t have access to a paid keyword research tool, you could always take the top-performing result, extract the page copy, and then ask ChatGPT what the primary keyword for the page is.

Key Takeaway

ChatGPT can be an expert on any topic and an invaluable keyword research tool. However, it is another tool to add to your toolbox when doing keyword research; it does not replace traditional keyword research tools.

As shown throughout this tutorial, from making up keywords at the beginning to inaccuracies around data and translations, ChatGPT can make mistakes when used for keyword research.

You cannot blindly trust the data you get back from ChatGPT.

However, it can offer a shortcut to understanding any topic for which you need to do keyword research and, as a result, save you countless hours.

But the key is how you prompt.

The prompts I shared with you above will help you understand a topic in minutes instead of hours and allow you to better seed keywords using keyword research tools.

It can even replace mundane keyword clustering tasks that you used to do with formulas in spreadsheets or generate ideas based on keywords you give it.

Paired with traditional keyword research tools, ChatGPT for keyword research can be a powerful tool in your arsenal.

Before we get into the nitty-gritty of using ChatGPT for market research, here are some important tips to keep in mind as you go.

Get specific. ChatGPT isn't a mind reader. The only way you can get quality results is to tell it exactly what you want (and don't want) it to do. Don't just ask who the target audience is for your industry. Instead, specify the product/service idea you want to get information about, and tell it exactly what you want to know (i.e., their income level, education, gender, location…or something totally different).

Imagine you're a vegan restaurant in Chicago. You want to start an online delivery program where your customers can order healthy salad bowls via an app and have the food delivered to their doorstep. 

Let's dive in.

1. Gather and present publicly available data 

The first step in market research is to gather data on your demographic. There are many ways to do this, including market research surveys and customer interviews, but ChatGPT can speed up the process for publicly available information.  

Prompt: I want to start an online delivery program where my customers can order salad bowls via an online app and have the food delivered to their homes in Chicago. Act as a market researcher and give me information on the demographics of people most likely to order salads in Chicago—including age groups, income, education, gender, and specific location.

2. Develop buyer personas

Prompt: Can you create detailed buyer personas for this online delivery program that delivers salad bowls to customers? Provide demographic info, psychographic info, needs, likes, and dislikes.

They may not be perfect, but they give you an idea of the spectrum your customers might be on. On one hand, there's a high-earner who just wants top-notch salads. On the flip side, you have a low-income person who's trying to get a decent salad, while saving money on food expenses. 

3. Identify competitors

Prompt: Can you make a table of the top 5 brands in the food delivery space, their website URLs, Instagram handles, and some important data about each of them?

This table shows that, if you create your own online delivery program, you'd be competing against some of the largest food delivery brands in the world. Now, you're faced with two choices: create your own online delivery app and have only your loyal customers use it, or partner with one (or more) of these food delivery brands to bring your salad bowls to many people, loyal customers or not.

If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

3. Get suggestions for how to fill in market gaps

Prompt: Are there any market opportunities or unique selling propositions (USPs) that current food delivery brands, like Grubhub, DoorDash, and Deliveroo, don't take advantage of?

I ran this prompt through ChatGPT twice, and (after admitting that it doesn't have real-time data), here's what it came up with.

While some suggestions overlap in both answers, there are suggestions unique to each response (a good reminder to always run your prompts more than once). Now, you have a bunch of ideas of what to do to set your online delivery program apart from similar brands in the industry.

ChatGPT, the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot designed to assist with language-based tasks, can effectively extract data for research purposes from physicians' clinical notes, UT Southwestern Medical Center researchers report in a new study.

Their findings , published in npj Digital Medicine , could significantly accelerate clinical research and lead to new innovations in computerized clinical decision-making aids.

"By transforming oceans of free-text health care data into structured knowledge, this work paves the way for leveraging artificial intelligence to derive insights, improve clinical decision-making, and ultimately enhance patient outcomes ," said study leader Yang Xie, Ph.D., Professor in the Peter O'Donnell Jr. School of Public Health and the Lyda Hill Department of Bioinformatics at UT Southwestern.

Dr. Xie is also Associate Dean of Data Sciences at UT Southwestern Medical School, Director of the Quantitative Biomedical Research Center, and a member of the Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Much of the research in the Xie Lab focuses on developing and using data science and AI tools to improve biomedical research and health care. She and her colleagues wondered whether ChatGPT might speed the process of analyzing clinical notes—the memos physicians write to document patients' visits, diagnoses, and statuses as part of their medical record—to find relevant data for clinical research and other uses.

Clinical notes are a treasure trove of information, Dr. Xie explained; however, because they are written in free text, extracting structured data typically involves having a trained medical professional read and annotate them. This process requires a huge investment of time and often resources—and can also introduce human bias.

Existing programs that use natural language processing require extensive human annotation and model training. As a result, clinical notes are largely underused for research purposes.

To determine whether ChatGPT could convert clinical notes to structured data, Dr. Xie and her colleagues had it analyze more than 700 sets of pathology notes for lung cancer patients to find the major features of primary tumors, whether lymph nodes were involved, and the cancer stage and subtype.

Overall, Dr. Xie said, the average accuracy of ChatGPT to make these determinations was 89%, based on reviews by human readers.

Their analysis took several weeks of full-time work compared with the few days it took to fine-tune data extraction from the ChatGPT model. This accuracy was significantly better than other traditional natural language processing methods tested for this use.

To test whether this approach is applicable to other diseases, Dr. Xie and her colleagues used ChatGPT to extract information about cancer grade and margin status from 191 clinical notes on patients from Children's Health with osteosarcoma, the most common type of bone cancer in children and adolescents. Here, ChatGPT returned information with nearly 99% accuracy on grade and 100% accuracy on margin status.

Dr. Xie noted that the results were strongly influenced by what prompts ChatGPT was given to perform each task—a phenomenon called prompt engineering. Providing multiple options to choose from, giving examples of appropriate responses, and directing ChatGPT to rely on evidence to draw conclusions improved its performance.

She added that using ChatGPT or other large language models to extract structured data from clinical notes could not only speed clinical research but also help clinical trial enrollment by matching patients' information to clinical trial protocols. However, she said, ChatGPT won't replace the need for human physicians.

"Even though this technology is an extremely promising way to save time and effort, we should always use it with caution. Rigorous and continuous evaluation is very important," Dr. Xie said.
