Why a homework club could work for your child

Girl in library

What is a homework club?

Homework clubs offer a place for your child to work in a supportive environment out of school hours.

Why choose a homework club?

Some children are so self-motivated that they’re able to work diligently on homework and ignore the distractions of normal family life, but not everyone finds it so easy.

Learning journey programme

Boost Your Child's English & Maths!

  • Weekly programme for each school year
  • Worksheets sent direct to your inbox
  • Keeps your child's learning on track

Doing homework requires a quiet space to work at home and support from you. If your job or other children make it tricky to provide those things you might want to consider the option of a homework club.

Who runs homework clubs?

Schools and many public libraries offer them, usually after school finishes for the day. Check what’s available with your school and local authority. The biggest advantage of a school-based homework club is that it’s on the same premises, so children don’t have to travel to the club.  Familiarity with teachers is also a plus point, and your child is in an environment where they are already relaxed.

If your child would prefer a change of location at the end of the school day a library homework club might be the answer. They usually run from 4pm to 6.30pm and sometimes for a few hours on a Saturday morning. “We find that children start getting more homework from the age of nine onwards so our clubs are of most benefit for eight to 14-year-olds,” says Lucy Love, manager for children and young people at libraries run by Enfield Council. “Under-eights can come to the club but a parent or carer must be with them.”

What benefits do clubs offer?

“The great thing about library homework clubs are the homework centre assistants – while they don’t do the child’s work, they have the knowledge and experience to guide them to the relevant books or online resources such as encyclopaedias,” explains Lucy. “We encourage children to use online data, as it’s usually the most up-to-date, and can offer equipment such as protractors and SATs papers. Homework clubs are also a great way of helping the child’s transition to secondary school.”

What to do after homework club

  • When you get home, ask your child to explain what their homework is – this will show you they have understood it properly themselves.
  • Help your child to settle down and concentrate by making sure there are no distractions around them when they go over their homework with you.
  • Encourage your child to check their work to reinforce the learning they have done.

Guidelines for a successful experience at the club

School work isn't always fun but it can be a positive learning experience. In order to maximize your student's 30 minute session we ask that you read the following tips:

  • Show up to your weekly sessions - Even if the student doesn't have homework. Our dedicated staff will have materials and fun educational games ready on hand to continue to strengthen the students core subject knowledge.
  • Missed sessions-  Please call, text or email at least one hour before your appointment time so we don't worry. We will Call, Text or Email you if, we need to cancel your session.
  • No Ghosting - This program is seven months long; students are not required to participate the entire length of the program. Most don't, and that's okay. Life happens, schedules change, students no longer need help. Whatever the reason, let us know and we will take on a new student.

student studying

  • During session-  Focus, focus, fun! Only the student and homework helper are present during the appointment. No siblings, pets or parents. Students will be supervised during their entire session.
  • After Session - We know you don't want to leave because the session was oodles of fun. " Parting is such sweet sorrow".  You must exit the room/area so the next session can begin. Students can hang out in the library unsupervised while they wait for their rides to pick them up.
  • Your opinion matters - Students and parents will periodically be asked to complete program surveys. Surveys are short and sweet and you might get a treat!

Vista View Homework Club

Homework Club is a free service offered to our Vista View students.  It generally begins the third week of school, and ends when SBAC testing begins in May.  It is held from 2:30pm - 3:30pm, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday . There is no Homework Club on minimum days.

Vista View's Homework Club is generally split into 1- 4 different rooms.  There will be occasions that your child's regular Homework Club may be canceled unexpectedly.  If this happens, your child may seek out a different Homework Club room. If all Homework Club rooms are full, your child will be asked to walk home, call for pickup, or go home on the first after-school bus.

Homework Club Rules and Guidelines

Students who go to Homework Club should be staying for the entire hour.  Please do not pick up your students early from Homework Club, as they may not receive a stamp (credit) if they are picked up early.  Students who check in to Homework Club and leave of their own accord to 'hang out' elsewhere will receive a consequence. Students must be picked up from Homework Club by 3:50pm - 4:00pm at the latest. Students should bring homework to Homework Club.  Students without homework or a library book to read should not be in Homework Club. Students who are not working are a distraction to others and will be removed and may receive a consequence. Repeat offenders may lose the privilege of attending. Only students who attend Homework Club, or stay under the tutelage of a teacher, may ride the late bus home, which arrives around 3:40pm - 3:50pm . Students without a Homework Club stamp will be denied entrance to the late bus and may receive a consequence.

The Dakota Center Homework Club is a curriculum-based after-school program open to K-8 students in Montgomery County. Our objective is to help students succeed in school by providing a safe learning environment, homework assistance, and character development opportunities.

We strongly believe that the demonstration of good character provides a foundation for success in all other areas of life. Our values are reflected in current educational reform initiatives, such as the Common Core Standards, that seek to grow independent, discerning, and persistent learners. We utilize Character Counts’ Six Pillars of Good Character (Responsibility, Respect, Trustworthiness, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship) as a framework for our character education.

Enrollment in the program is opened in advance of each school year and again before the second semester. We currently enroll approximately 60 students. Students are invited to participate on a first-come, first-serve basis. Every student is required to attend weekly activities in etiquette, character development, Dakota Leadership and financial literacy. Choice activities vary during the year, including arts and crafts, cooking, games, gardening, basketball, service opportunities, and more.
