Unpacking “New Year, New Me”

essay for new year new me

This article is part of the Unpacking Culture series in which we examine a well-known axiom and weigh any true or positive aspects of it against any negative or misleading connotations of the phrase.

Resolutions Gone Wrong

I like to make New Year’s resolutions as much as anyone. I declare with many Americans every January, “New year, new me.” My resolutions, like most, surround my physical and spiritual health, as well as investing more time in things that matter (like family) and avoiding spending time on things that don’t (like my iPhone screen).

Studies show that almost 40% of American adults make New Year’s resolutions. 1 We’re all captivated by the flip of the calendar and a fresh start. New beginnings pull like gravity.

Enough about Me

Enough about Me

This book calls women to look away from new self-improvement strategies in order to find the abundant life and joy God offers them in Jesus.

Exercising more is the top New Year’s resolution for Americans, with 48% of resolution makers setting that as their primary goal. The next top five resolutions are eating healthier, losing weight, saving more money, pursuing a career ambition, and spending less time on social media.

While our collective declaration of “New year, new me” is powerful on January 1, it loses strength and steam quickly. The second Friday in January is known as Quitters Day because so many of us give up by then. Only 9% of us successfully carry our goals to completion.

What’s True behind “New Year, New Me”

The desire to remake ourselves is universal because, being made in the image of God (Gen. 1:27), his truth resonates with us. It’s innate within us. And especially here in the US, where our culture and values have been historically shaped by Christian influences, we have a collective worldview that borrows biblical truth. Here are three examples of Biblical truth hidden inside “New year, new me.”

We understand our lives are limited . Americans declare, “YOLO!” You only live once. We know and feel the brevity of life. Whether we acknowledge it or not, that’s a biblical truth. James puts it this way, “What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes” (James 4:14). Our God has impressed on each of us that this life is short, and we each only have one.

We want to spend our lives well . Living in the reality that our lives are brief, we want to make them count. While many Americans fall short of wanting to make their lives count for the sake of Jesus, most sense that they’re meant to make an impact, to help others, or to somehow leave a mark on this world. The psalmist says, “So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom” (Ps. 90:12). Whether for God’s glory or our own, we want to spend our lives well.

We understand we have a purpose . We ask even very young children, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” As adults we ask one another, “What do you do?” There’s a universal awareness between us that we have a purpose, that we’re all meant to be busy about something that matters. While the non-believer may not acknowledge it, we Christians know “we are [God’s] workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them” (Eph. 2:10).

These truths are universal because they are from the very heart of the Creator who made us. But when we separate these truths from the foundation of our Maker, who also desires to be our Savior, it leads to destruction. Untethered from God in heaven, the drive behind “New year, new me” leads to the idolatry of self.

“New Year, New Me” in the Age of Self

In the 21st Century we claim we are self-made and self-sufficient. Everything from online college degrees to bathroom renovations is DIY—do it yourself. For most of us, when we say, “New year, new me,” we mean that we will pursue self-improvement via self-help and self-control. Pulling ourselves up by our bootstraps is as American as apple pie. But when our New Year’s resolutions are rooted only in ourselves, we discover some tough truths about our human condition. Here are just three, which reveal the flimsiness of depending on ourselves rather than on the God who made us.

We find we are finite . Humans are limited creatures. We don’t have endless motivation, energy, and will. Everyone who has ever made a resolution has hit a limit. In our own strength, we simply cannot go on forever. It takes more than sheer force of will to make a real change.

To pursue the good life outside of Christ is futile.

We find we need infinite affirmation . When we determine our own identity, our own goals, our own purpose—when our values are self-made and not rooted in something outside of ourselves—we must hold ourselves up and convince ourselves that we are enough. When we insist on being self-made, the source and supply of our motivation must also be self-made. We depend on endless affirmation to know we are doing it right.

We ultimately defeat ourselves . The self-help cycle of self-empowerment fueled by self-praise ultimately proves self-defeating. The primary reason people give for failing in their New Year’s resolutions is losing motivation. To be self-dependent is just too much. We are finite and fallen and fragile. While it may feel like we have what it takes on January 1st, we all know from personal experience that our own determination runs out. Self-help ultimately leads to self-defeat.

Being Made Truly New

Desiring to become a new version of ourselves is not a twenty-first century idea but a biblical idea. It’s precisely what happens when we embrace the gospel. The apostle Paul says, “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me” (Gal. 2:20).

Jesus loves us and gave himself for us so that we might become new creations, reconciled to our Father in heaven. Created by God and for God, it is his kindness and mercy alone that make us new from the inside out. “For by grace [we] have been saved through faith. And this is not [our] own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast” (Eph. 2:8–9).

The process of being made new is initiated and completed by our Maker and Savior—not you or me. Our God is at work within us, “for those who love God, all things work together for good for those who are called according to his purpose. For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son” (Rom. 8:28–29). The Lord is growing us and changing us, making us more like Jesus every single day.

This New Year’s Day, let’s not settle for “New year, new me.” Let’s not settle for self-will and self-help and self-control. Let’s not settle for quick fixes and superficial changes because New Year’s resolutions will not satisfy or sustain if they are rooted in ourselves. Rather, Christ in us is the hope of glory (Col. 1:27).

Here’s what’s true this New Year’s Day and every other day: you and I and all humans were made by God and for God (Col. 1:17). Therefore, we will not find purpose, peace, or satisfying soul-deep change outside of God. He is the source of our lives, the goal of our lives, and the substance of our lives. To pursue the good life outside of Christ is futile.

By all means, “New year, new me” this year and every year. But may the new versions of you and me be truly new. Together let’s pray, God in heaven, make us new, day by day, more and more in your image, for your glory. Help us to settle for nothing less .

Essays About New Year: 5 Examples and Prompts

The new year marks a new beginning for everyone. If you are writing essays about new year, you can start by reading some essay examples.

On new year’s day, everything resets. The calendar returns to January, the year’s first month, and the year starts anew. In the same way, most people see the start of a new year as the start of something better for themselves.

They want to improve themselves in specific ways by picking up good traits, being kinder, and trying to get out of bad habits and mannerisms; they set new year’s resolutions to attempt to break these habits. New year’s eve and new year’s day are undoubtedly some of the most important days of the year.

If you are writing an essay about new year, start by reading these examples.

1. The New Year: A Time for Reflection and a Time to Move Forward by Susanne Carlson

2. my new year’s resolution by francisco sĂĄez, 3. my lonely new year’s eve party will consist of sadness, hope, and life-changing gratitude by dawn bevier, 4. the psychology of new years eve reflection by ben farrell, 5. why is new year’s eve so depressing by leila ettachfini, 1. what is the importance of new year’s resolutions, 2. different new year celebrations, 3. is new year a new beginning, 4. why some people find new year’s celebrations depressing, 5. are new year’s resolutions a waste of time.

“With reflection and attention to positive change, taking note of what we have learned on our journey up until now, can give us the opportunity to apply it to the future, to take with us what is helpful and to leave behind what is not.”

Carlson writes about the importance of reflection and learning from one’s mistakes for the new year ahead. She sees the new year as a time for new beginnings; she wants it to be the start of positive change for others, just as it has been for her. Reflection is essential, as it allows us to see what we can improve on and do better in the coming year.

“According to Goleman, the link between attention and excellence is behind almost all our achievements. Attention is needed not only to understand, learn or remember, but also to read the emotions of others, generate empathy and build good relationships. It is an asset that, despite being little known and despised, has great relevance in how we face life.”

SĂĄez briefly explains his new year’s resolution: to be more attentive. He wants to improve his attention and focus on forming better relationships with others, healthily using technology, and better his mental health. By reading the book Focus: The Hidden Driver of Excellence , he hopes to hone his attention for the new year and do better in the future. You might also be interested in these essays about celebration .

“And yes, I know this pandemic is not done with its destruction, but I also know we’re fighting back like hell and making progress. And that long-awaited day of celebration is now coming sooner rather than later. And when that day comes, I can’t help but believe that the world will be a better place. I know I will be a better person and millions of you will be as well.”

In this solemn piece, Bevier laments new year’s celebrations during the COVID-19 pandemic, which has killed millions. She is sad for those she has lost and the loss of the pre-pandemic life she loved. However, she hopes the next new year will not be like the last, and she has learned to be grateful for the more minor things in life. The pandemic has taught her a lot, but most importantly, to be optimistic for the future and to look ahead to the new year with hope, kindness, and gratitude.

“In reality, new years eve is no different to any other night of the year yet; we can’t help but assign some special meaning to the 31st of December. The psychological significance of the night can be a good thing, but it can also create tremendous anxiety for us.”

Farrell explains the psychological pressure of New Year’s Eve. This one night is no different from any other, but since it is the last one of the year, people feel the need to reflect not only on the day but the entire year. The imagery of big parties and “new beginnings” further add to the pressure, as people feel the need to have the “picture-perfect” new year. He says that while it can be helpful to use the beginning of the year as the start of positive change, it is more important to learn from one’s mistakes, no matter what time of the year.

“‘Anytime you let social convention dictate what you do rather than doing what feels best for you, you run the risk of anxiety, depression, and so on,’ says Dr. Kubiak. New Year’s Eve leaves this group with a tough choice: go out even though you really don’t want to or deal with the uncomfortable task of telling your friends that you’re going to sit this one out.”

Ettachfini explains new year’s eve from the perspective of those who get anxious or depressed during this time. Failure during the year, social anxiety, and the feeling of having to say goodbye to the year are all contributing factors. She cites information from Dr. Larry Kubiak, who says that depression and anxiety are normal, but it is essential to talk about them with a loved one to prevent their consuming of your life.

The Psychology Behind 'New Year, New Me'

The Psychology Behind 'New Year, New Me'

Each year, many women experience a surge of determination and set New Year’s resolutions in hopes of becoming the best version of themselves. The new year, with its promise of fresh beginnings, often brings about a level of introspection, leading us to confidently proclaim the popular mantra: “New year, new me.” But if we’re honest, how many of us vowed to swap our sugar-filled morning lattes for kale smoothies only to have a bad day and immediately revert to our old habits?

In our journey of self-growth , resolutions can play a pivotal role, but their effectiveness hinges on understanding the “why” and crafting a plan that allows for successful implementation. It’s not just about setting goals; it’s about delving into the reasons behind them and devising a concrete plan to ensure we follow through.

Numerous surveys have highlighted the phenomenon of New Year’s resolutions. It’s estimated that approximately 45% of Americans participate and set goals at the top of each new year.

“This aligns with the findings of the psychosocial study, ‘The Fresh Start Effect,’” says Barbara A. Prempeh, Psy.D., a New Jersey-based licensed psychologist and founder of B. Resilient —a counseling practice specializing in trauma and helping individuals and organizations develop resilience. “The research delves into the influence of temporal landmarks like the new year on driving aspirational behavior. These landmarks help us mentally distance ourselves from past actions, offering hope and renewed motivation to pursue our future objectives.”

New Year’s resolutions leverage “the fresh start effect” by aligning with the symbolic significance of the start of a new year. According to the study, people are more likely to set ambitious goals during this time, driven by a sense of renewal and a desire to make positive life changes.

Prempeh believes that the new year is an ideal time for transformation, but emphasizes the importance of analyzing the origin of our resolutions . Why do we really want to change?

“Is the resolution something that you want to accomplish for yourself because you discovered an area of your life that needed growth or change, or is it a resolution that was created based on what others are doing?” she challenges.

In other words, are you considering becoming vegetarian because you’re drawn to the potential health advantages of a meat-free diet, or are you following a current trend? Do you want to write the book because you genuinely have an interest in storytelling, or are you merely caught up in the hype of bestseller lists? Moment of truth: Are these resolutions from the heart, or just chasing the latest social media buzz?

“There is nothing wrong with seeing someone accomplish something or growing in a certain area and feeling as though you want that growth for yourself, too; but make sure it is aligned with who you truly desire to be,” she says. “Make sure to examine the source and the ‘why’ to your resolutions.”

Goal-setting coach Nisheena Clemons, founder of Phoenix Rise Wellness , believes that understanding your why can also be beneficial in actually making your goals stick.

According to her, a solid plan is the starting point, but true sticking power comes when you grasp the purpose and motivation behind your decision-making. Clemons utilizes the conventional S.M.A.R.T. model (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound) for resolution setting, but she offers a slight remix to the traditional acronym, urging women to dream bigger.

“Instead of the A for achievable, I like to replace it with ‘audacious,'” she says. “When we are thinking about goals, we are thinking about things that are beyond us. Audacious goals are about purpose. Remembering your purpose can be motivating when it gets tough.”

Once you’ve assessed your why, Clemons recommends devising the plan by first breaking goals down into smaller tasks.

“I think of the African proverb—there is only one way to eat an elephant, one bite at a time,” she says. “The same is with our goals. We break them down to do something almost every day—if not every day—towards that goal. When you break it down so small, it builds your confidence and momentum to keep on doing it. And it compounds over time.”

And if you need a bit of extra support, enlisting a life coach can help you map out your dreams, tackle obstacles, and keep you on track when you need that extra push. And there is power in community.

“A life coach, workshops and empowerment groups can help you connect with like-minded people to experience a collective momentum to keep you going,” Clemons says. “Having an accountability partner is crucial in achieving your goals.”

As you navigate the maze of the new year, remember that resolutions are less about grand declarations, quotes, and magic wand transformations. Instead, focus on the beauty of your journey of self-discovery and growth. Embrace each moment and cherish the lessons you’ll learn along the way. And if resolutions are about aligning with your purpose, as suggested by Clemons—here’s to fulfilling New Year’s resolutions that guide you in living not only your purpose but your best life in 2024.

New Year Essay for Students in English

New Year's Eve is a joyous festival celebrated all over the world. According to the Gregorian calendar, it marks the start of a new year (which contains 12 months and January 1 is counted as the first day of a new year). People all over the world begin making plans for new year's resolutions and preparations one month in advance.

New Year's Eve is a universal celebration that transcends cultural and caste boundaries, bringing joy to people worldwide. Celebrated with enthusiasm, people of all ages engage in various activities. Many schools and educational institutions observe a winter break, starting from Christmas Eve and extending until New Year's (January 1). The significance of New Year's lies in its representation of a fresh start, ushering in happiness as people bid farewell to the past year. This festive occasion symbolises hope and optimism, uniting individuals in the shared anticipation of new beginnings and the possibilities the upcoming year holds.

The New Year is a time for people to put all of their bad experiences behind them and take a positive step into the future. Everyone wishes for their own and their loved ones' happiness, health, and prosperity in the coming New Year. For children, a new year is incomplete without three things: a Christmas tree, a New Year's Eve party with new dresses, and the required New Year's essay as part of their winter vacation homework).

How do People Around the World Celebrate?

A unique custom has been followed these days in every household – a New Year tree. In order to define this, it is nothing but the Christmas tree that gets decorated during the festive season and year-end. All the family members take part in decorating the Christmas tree/ New Year tree with various kinds of toys, bells, stars, candies, mistletoe, and colourful fairy lights.

New Year’s day is followed by different other customs and traditions in every household across the globe. Each culture celebrates this day in its own unique way. Some people start planning for a mini-vacation beforehand while some plan to spend quality time with their loved ones. The preparation begins with buying gifts, decorating houses, and purchasing new clothes.

India's New Year's Eve Celebration

Everyone in India celebrates New Year on different days depending on their religion. Nonetheless, due to the influence of Western civilization, most people now celebrate New Year's Day on January 1 st as well.

The advent of the New Year in India is marked by vibrant and diverse celebrations that resonate with cultural richness. These festivities underscore the unity in diversity as India welcomes the promise of a new year with enthusiasm and reverence.

January 1 as New Year’s Day

The early Roman Calendar has 10 months and 304 days, and each new year begins on the spring equinox; according to tradition, it was created by Romulus, the founder of Rome, in the eighth century B.C. Numa Pompilius, the second king of Rome, later added the months of Januarius and Februarius to the Roman Calendar in 1713 B.C.

Over the centuries, the calendar has been out of sync with the Sun. The emperor Caesar then decided to solve the mystery in 46 B.C. by consulting with the most prominent astronomers and mathematicians of the time. Caesar introduced the Julian calendar, which was very similar to the modern Gregorian calendar, which is still used by the majority of countries around the world.

Caesar established January 1 as the first day of the year, partly to honour Janus, the Roman god of beginnings (whose two faces allowed him to seem back to the past and forward into the longer term which was a part of his reforms). To commemorate the New Year, the Romans exchanged gifts and offered sacrifices to God Janus. They also went to loud parties and adorned their homes with laurel branches.

Traditions for the New Year

Many countries celebrate New Year from the evening of December 31 (also known as New Year's Eve) until the early hours of January 1 st , often with several meals and snacks to bring good fortune in the coming year. Grapes are known as a symbol of hope for the coming months and are thus used by people in Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries.

Legumes, such as lentils in Italy and black-eyed peas in the southern United States, have been a traditional New Year's dish in many countries and places because they are thought to resemble coins and future financial success. Pork is also a popular New Year's dish in some countries, including Austria, Hungary, Cuba, and Portugal, and it is believed that pigs represent progress and prosperity.

Rice pudding with an almond hidden inside it is served on New Year's Eve in many countries, including Sweden and Norway. It is said that whoever finds the almond will be blessed with 12 months of good fortune. In contrast, ring-shaped cakes and pastries are served during the New Year in the Netherlands, Greece, Mexico, and other countries. It denotes that the year has completed a full circle.

The Importance of the New Year

New Year's Eve is like a big, happy party that everyone in the world joins! It's a special time when we say goodbye to the old year and welcome the brand-new one with excitement. The New Year is like a magical reset button; it encourages us to start fresh, try new things, and bring more happiness into our lives.

We make promises to ourselves, called resolutions, to be kind, work hard, or learn something new. It's like setting goals for ourselves.

The New Year is a bit like a festival, but instead of lights and decorations, it's full of positive vibes and energy. This energy helps us tackle challenges and reach our goals. So, New Year's Eve is not just a date on the calendar; it's a special time that fills us with enthusiasm and makes our lives even more exciting!

Table of Contents

New Year Resolution Essay Tips

Reflect on the past year: Begin by reflecting on the experiences, achievements, and challenges you encountered in the previous year. Consider what you learned, what you would like to improve, and what goals you want to set for the upcoming year.

Set specific and realistic goals: Choose resolutions that are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART goals). Avoid vague or overly ambitious resolutions that may be difficult to achieve. Instead, focus on specific actions or behaviors that can be realistically implemented in your life.

Prioritize your resolutions: Identify the most important resolutions that align with your values, aspirations, and personal growth. It’s better to focus on a few meaningful goals rather than overwhelming yourself with an extensive list.

Provide context and personal anecdotes: Share personal stories or anecdotes that illustrate why each resolution is important to you. This will add depth and authenticity to your essay, allowing the reader to connect with your experiences and motivations.

Outline your action plan: For each resolution, outline the steps or strategies you plan to take to achieve it. Break down your goals into manageable tasks and establish a timeline or milestones to track your progress. This demonstrates your commitment and shows that you have thoughtfully considered the path to achieving your resolutions.

Discuss potential challenges and solutions: Acknowledge potential obstacles or challenges you may face while pursuing your resolutions. Address how you plan to overcome them and develop strategies to stay motivated and resilient in the face of setbacks.

Emphasize personal growth and self-reflection: Discuss how your resolutions contribute to your personal growth, well-being, and overall happiness. Reflect on the positive changes you anticipate in your life as a result of achieving these goals.

Be honest and authentic: Your essay should reflect your genuine aspirations and beliefs. Avoid writing what you think others want to hear and instead express your true intentions and values.

Edit and revise: Once you have written your essay, review it for clarity, coherence, and grammar. Edit out any unnecessary details or repetition, ensuring that your ideas flow logically.

Conclusion: Conclude your essay by summarizing your resolutions and reaffirming your commitment to achieving them. End on a positive note, expressing optimism and excitement for the new year.

New Year Resolution Essay Example #1

As the calendar turns and a new year dawns upon us, it is a time of reflection, renewal, and the opportunity for personal growth. New Year’s resolutions have long been a tradition, allowing individuals to set intentions and goals for the coming year. For me, this tradition is not just a fleeting promise but a chance to embark on a journey of self-improvement.

One of my resolutions for the upcoming year is to prioritize my physical and mental well-being. In the fast-paced world we live in, it is easy to neglect self-care amidst the demands of daily life. By making a conscious effort to exercise regularly, eat nutritious meals, and practice mindfulness, I aim to cultivate a healthier lifestyle. Taking care of my physical and mental health will not only enhance my overall well-being but also provide me with the energy and resilience necessary to tackle life’s challenges.

Another resolution I have is to expand my knowledge and broaden my horizons. Learning should be a lifelong endeavor, and I believe that continuous education is key to personal growth. Whether it’s through reading books, attending seminars, or taking up new hobbies, I aspire to constantly seek knowledge, explore diverse perspectives, and embrace new opportunities for intellectual development. By doing so, I hope to nurture my curiosity, deepen my understanding of the world, and become a more well-rounded individual.

Additionally, I resolve to foster stronger connections with loved ones and build meaningful relationships. In today’s digital age, it is easy to get caught up in a virtual world, often overlooking the importance of genuine human connection. I want to invest time and effort in nurturing my relationships, engaging in meaningful conversations, and creating lasting memories with family and friends. By being present and actively listening, I hope to strengthen the bonds that enrich my life and bring joy to those around me.

In conclusion, the start of a new year holds immense potential for growth and positive change. Through my resolutions to prioritize my well-being, expand my knowledge, and foster stronger connections, I am committed to embracing personal development and striving for a more fulfilling life. While resolutions may not always be easy to achieve, I am determined to approach them with dedication, perseverance, and a mindset open to learning from both successes and setbacks. As I embark on this journey of self-improvement, I am excited about the possibilities that the new year holds and the person I can become through embracing growth and positive change.

New Year Resolution Essay Example #2

As the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve, a sense of possibility fills the air. It’s a time when we bid farewell to the old and eagerly embrace the new, armed with resolutions that promise personal growth and positive change. This year, I am determined to embark on a transformative journey through my New Year’s resolutions.

First and foremost, I resolve to cultivate a mindset of gratitude and positivity. In a world often defined by negativity and challenges, it is crucial to acknowledge and appreciate the blessings that surround us. Each day, I will strive to find something to be grateful for, whether it’s a simple pleasure or a significant achievement. By shifting my perspective to one of gratitude, I hope to nurture a positive outlook that permeates every aspect of my life.

Additionally, I am committed to prioritizing self-care and well-being. In the hustle and bustle of daily life, it’s easy to neglect our own needs. However, I believe that taking care of ourselves is not a luxury but a necessity. I will make a conscious effort to engage in activities that nourish my body, mind, and soul. This may include regular exercise, meditation, pursuing hobbies, or simply allowing myself time to rest and rejuvenate. By prioritizing self-care, I aim to create a solid foundation for overall well-being and resilience.

Furthermore, I aspire to embrace personal growth by stepping out of my comfort zone. Growth often occurs when we challenge ourselves and push beyond familiar boundaries. I will seek opportunities to learn and develop new skills, whether it’s taking on a new project at work, enrolling in a course, or engaging in meaningful conversations with people who possess different perspectives. By embracing discomfort and embracing the unknown, I believe I can unlock my full potential and continue evolving as an individual.

Lastly, I resolve to make a positive impact in the world around me. Small acts of kindness can create ripples of change that extend far beyond our immediate sphere. I will strive to contribute to my community through volunteering, supporting causes I care about, and spreading kindness wherever I go. By recognizing the power of my actions, no matter how small, I can be part of a collective effort to create a more compassionate and harmonious world.

In conclusion, New Year’s resolutions offer a pathway to personal transformation. Through cultivating gratitude, prioritizing self-care, embracing growth, and making a positive impact, I am committed to embarking on a journey of self-discovery and self-improvement. While the road may be challenging at times, I am determined to stay focused, resilient, and open to the opportunities that lie ahead. As the New Year unfolds, I am excited to see the person I can become and the positive changes I can bring to my own life and the world around me.

First and foremost, I resolve to achieve a healthier work-life balance. In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to become consumed by professional responsibilities, leaving little time for personal pursuits and relationships. I will set clear boundaries, carve out dedicated time for self-care, and strive to be fully present in my personal life. By nurturing a harmonious balance between work and leisure, I aim to enhance my overall well-being and cultivate stronger connections with loved ones.

Moreover, I am committed to practicing mindfulness in my daily life. Mindfulness is the art of being fully present and aware of the present moment, without judgment. I will incorporate mindfulness techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, and mindful eating into my routine. By cultivating a heightened sense of awareness and living in the present, I hope to reduce stress, increase focus, and find greater joy in the simple pleasures of life.

In addition, I resolve to prioritize self-reflection and personal growth. Regular self-reflection allows us to gain insights into our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, enabling us to make intentional choices. I will dedicate time for introspection, journaling, and setting personal goals. By embracing self-reflection, I can identify areas for improvement, celebrate achievements, and chart a course for personal growth and development.

Furthermore, I aspire to embrace sustainability and contribute to a healthier planet. I will adopt eco-friendly practices such as reducing waste, conserving energy, and supporting sustainable initiatives. By making conscious choices that minimize my ecological footprint, I can contribute to the preservation of our environment and inspire others to do the same.

Lastly, I resolve to foster a spirit of gratitude and kindness. Each day, I will make an effort to express gratitude for the blessings in my life and extend acts of kindness to others. Whether it’s through a simple smile, a heartfelt thank-you, or a charitable act, I believe that small gestures can have a profound impact on both the giver and the recipient.

In conclusion, my New Year’s resolutions revolve around embracing balance and mindfulness in all aspects of my life. By prioritizing work-life balance, practicing mindfulness, engaging in self-reflection, embracing sustainability, and fostering gratitude and kindness, I am committed to nurturing my well-being, personal growth, and contributing to a better world. As the New Year begins, I am excited to embark on this transformative journey, knowing that each step I take brings me closer to the balanced, mindful, and fulfilled life I aspire to lead.

essay for new year new me

Personal Essay Sample: New Year, New Me

This year, I want to get higher grades than I did last semester, keep losing weight, and start going to mass every Sunday. To accomplish my goals, I know that I will have to work hard and stay persistent and consistent. All of these goals take effort and concentration. I want to fight and put forth my best effort towards accomplishing my goals. I hope that I can prove to myself that I can be trusted to reach my goals.

My first goal is to get higher grades than I did last semester. Last semester, my lowest grade was a 95. I always want to improve, or at least get the same grades. I know that basketball and volleyball seasons were slowing me down last semester, so I want to prove that I can be better without distractions like sports. The first step in accomplishing this goal is to completely understand the topics we work on in class. Sometimes, I feel like people expect me to know what we’re learning as soon as the teacher says it, so I feel too embarrassed to ask questions. I want to feel comfortable asking questions in class. I also want to stay consistent with my effort. I often change the amount of effort I put into a class based on what topic we are on or what I have going on in my life. I want to be strong and work through any conflicts I have to deal with. I will know that I have accomplished my goal once I get my report card in May.

My second resolution is to continue my weight loss journey. I have been exercising more and eating healthier, and as a result, I have lost 25 lbs. I am very proud of my progress, but I want to keep going. I know that many people who go on diets or start weight training often lose their momentum and gain the weight back. This defeats the whole purpose of their effort and all of their hard work. I don’t want to be like those people. I want to keep my momentum and keep working towards my goal of losing 50 lbs. One of the reasons that many people give up on diets is because they take one cheat day and can’t stop eating outside of their diet. I want to gain trust in myself to know that I can take a cheat day and recover quickly and get back on the diet. Another reason why people fail diets is because they get tired of eating similar foods and want something different so they go back to unhealthy eating. I think that I can prevent this downfall by finding new recipes and dishes to try so that I have an expanded palette and can continue working towards my goal weight. I will know that I have accomplished my goal when I reach my goal weight.

My third goal is to start going to mass every Sunday. A fact about me that I am ashamed of is that I haven’t been to a Sunday mass since 6th grade. I’ve wanted to start going to Sunday masses for years now, but I’ve always been too embarrassed to ask my family because I thought they would say no. I’m in an interesting situation when it comes to my family’s religion. My mom and I are both Methodist, but I only know Catholic education. My step-dad is Baptist and my brother has not said anything to us about his religion, but he knows Catholic education. I now feel comfortable asking my family about Sunday masses because my step-dad said that he wanted to start going to mass if we would go with him. I told him that I was very open to going to mass and that I would love to start attending mass with the family because we haven’t in a long time. The new issue is figuring out which church we should attend. My brother and I would understand a Catholic mass while my parents would understand a Methodist or Baptist mass. This year, I hope that I can solve this problem and start attending mass on Sunday’s. I will know that I have accomplished this goal when my family and I go to Sunday mass for at least 2 months straight.

This year, I want to get higher grades than I did last semester, keep losing weight, and start going to mass every Sunday. I am very excited to attempt accomplishing my goals and see how far I can get. I may go beyond my goals, or maybe even fail. Either way, I will be proud of myself for trying my hardest. I can’t wait to get started with the year and to go head-first at my resolutions. I’m ready to work hard and fight for my goals. 2023, here I come.

The Perfect New Year's Resolutions Essay

So it’s that time of year when you are thinking about your New Year’s resolutions and you’ve heard about this thing call a “New Year’s resolutions essay”. Now you’re asking yourself what a New Year’s resolution essay even is, if you should write a New Year resolution essay, and how to even go about it if you wanted to.

Or maybe you’re a school student and your teacher has tasked you with writing about your New Year resolutions for school, or you are a college student and your professor has asked you to stand up in front of the class and talk about your New Year resolutions for college.

Well, never fear, because this post will tell you exactly what a New Year’s resolutions essay is and how you should go about writing one if you are convinced to (or have to!) do so.

And, non-students out there, do not leave this page thinking it is just for students, because you couldn’t be more wrong. As I hope to convince you of, a New year’s resolution essay can be a powerful thing for adults and students alike.

Richie Norton quote on New Year resolutions - “Last year told you
what you needed to know.
Now it's go time.”

What Is a New Year’s Resolutions Essay?

A New Year’s resolutions essay is simply an essay that someone writes at the end of the year or beginning of the year, talking about what they learnt from the previous year and what they want to commit to doing the next year.

The New Year is often a time where people reflect on what they have and have not achieved, what they are happy about, what they are unhappy about, and what they want to change going forwards. A New Year resolution essay simply puts those thoughts in to an essay format that is either written, printed, posted online, or spoken by way of a speech.

People often use them as a way to keep themselves accountable in the year ahead. They post them online, give them to friends, put them on the wall and even on the fridge in order to give themselves the pressure of making the resolutions public. This is actually a very effective tactic to stick to your resolutions as the external pressure keeps you accountable purely from wanting to avoid embarrassment.

Jason Soroski quote on New Year resolutions - “There is nothing
magical about the flip
of the calendar, but it
represents a clean break,
a new hope,
and a blank canvas.”

What is the Purpose of a New Year’s Resolution Essay?

The purpose of a New Year resolutions essay is to get someone to really think about what they did over the last year and how they want to adjust going in to the next year. If you are at school or college and have been tasked with writing a New Year’s resolutions essay and think it is just a boring, pointless chore, I implore you to take it seriously and use the opportunity to think about your life and what you want for it.

Although arbitrary in its date, taking stock of what you have and haven’t done, what you have and haven’t achieved over the last year compared to your goals, and how you might want to improve or adjust going forwards can be an extremely powerful thing. After all, what gets measured gets managed, meaning if you take stock of where you are, or where you are not, with your goals or personal development, you have an easier time adjusting to make sure you get back on track or stay focused if you already are so.

If you are keen on personal development and self-improvement, then a New Year’s resolution essay should be something you keep in your toolkit. Ideally you would be taking stock of where you’re at throughout the year, but if you’re just getting started with personal development or have fallen off the wagon with it of late, then a New Year resolution essay could be a great place to (re)start.

Mehmet Murat ildan quote on New Year resolutions - “Every year is a
chess game.
New Year is a new
chess game! You make
the right moves,
you win the game!”

Why You Should Write a New Year Resolution Essay

You should write a New Year resolution essay because, as mentioned, it can be a really powerful tool to help you make sure you are living the life you desire. Think about it – if you are forced to sit down and actually take stock of what you did over the last year, you will be confronted with the thoughts of what you wanted to achieve when you thought about this same topic the year before and whether you actually achieved those things. Although confronting and uncomfortable, you can use that as an opportunity to make adjustments and new, better plans for this year.

Or maybe it will give you the chance to look book and realise you absolutely rocked it, nailing all your goals and then some. So maybe your essay will help instil more confidence in you and help you think about the even greater things you can achieve in the next year.

This is a great opportunity for personal reflection – something most people don’t do. This could be a way to make sure you have the best year next year. This essay could be your chance to make new goals, new targets, and new promises to yourself.

Vern McLellan quote on New Year resolutions - "What the new year
brings to you
will depend a great deal
on what you bring
to the new year."

How to Write a New Year Resolutions Essay

How to get ideas for a new year’s resolution essay.

The best way to write a New Year resolutions essay is to self-reflect. Think back on your year and what you are glad you did and what you regret not doing. Then think how you wish you had behaved or where you feel you did well. Those things will likely point towards your resolutions or at least give you some ideas on what your resolutions could be.

You could also read other people’s resolutions online, getting ideas from what they have said. Perhaps there is an actor, athlete, politician, or other public figure you are a fan of. How do they act? How do they carry themselves in public? What do you like about them? Would you like to be similar to them in any way? This could also give you ideas on what your resolutions might be.

Did you witness something that upset you or inspired you during the year? Have you read something that made you think deeply? What was it about those things that made you feel that way? Every situation you have been in or witnessed affected you in some way. What ways were you affected? How you feel about those things could point you towards your resolutions in regards to the kind of person you want to be and how you want to act.

Taylor Duvall quote on New Year resolutions - "This year, be structured enough
for success and achievement
and flexible enough
for creativity and fun."

Perhaps you’ve been thinking about making a career change lately. Maybe you hate your job and want to move on. What could you do and how could you act over the next year that will help you move in to a career or field you want to do? Do you like your job and want to do better and get promoted? What resolutions could you have that will make you stand out to your boss?

Have you been working hard enough at school or college, or have you been slacking off? Have you been taking part in extra-curricular activities and want to do more, or have you been keeping yourself isolated and regret it?

Do you keep making the same mistakes in love or with your diet? Do you want to get in shape, exercise more, and make sure you eat the right things going forwards?

In essence, think about where you are unhappy, dissatisfied, or wanting to improve in life. Those things can point to possible resolutions. On the other hand, think where you feel you are doing well, where you have succeeded and excelled. Do you want to make resolutions to improve those things even further or simply to make sure your are continuing to do those things?

Tips for students: if you are looking for some inspiration to come up with your New Year resolutions, you should check out this post on The Best New Year Resolutions to Help Students Succeed .

Cyril Cusack quote on New Year resolutions - "If you asked me for my
new year resolution,
it would be
to find out who I am."

Writing a New Year’s resolution essay

Do you want your essay to be short – one you can simply stick up on the fridge and look at quickly every morning? Perhaps bullet points are the way forwards for you.

Do you do better and connect more when you get deep in to something? Maybe you want to write something longer-form or even a full-blown manifesto if you think that would help you!

There are no rights or wrongs when it comes to your New Year resolution essay. The point is to write something that makes you think, means something to you and is something you want to stick to.

The most usual way to write an essay is to write an opening statement – what you propose to say in your essay, the argument you are going to make, where you are going to take your audience – then make your points – in this case, talk about what you learnt about yourself over the last year and how you would like to adjust or improve over the next year – then make your conclusion – a short summary and ending to what you have said.

Melody Beattie quote on New Year resolutions - "The new year stands
before us like a chapter in a book,
waiting to be written.
We can help write that story
by setting goals."

When Should I Write My New Year Resolution Essay?

You should write your New Year resolution essay when you are in the best frame of mind to do it, when you can give it the most dedication. You should also try and write it as close to New Year’s Eve as possible, as this will mean you can take full stock of year you just had and start fresh the next day – on New Year’s Day – having just written your New Year’s resolutions essay.

You may choose to write it with a friend, write it alone, with loud, inspirational music on, or in a quiet room only lit with candles. However you do it, just be sure to put your full focus on it in order to get the most benefit.

Michael Josephson quote on New Year resolutions - "Approach the new year
with resolve to find the
opportunities hidden
in each new day."

When it comes to writing your New Year’s resolutions essay, remember that this could be a really good opportunity to improve your life, to make sure you are going after your dreams , to make sure you aren’t wasting your life or wasting your time as you go through the year, so that you avoid feeling like a failure again if that is a pattern for you and that you feel successful throughout the year as you stick to your resolutions and achieve your goals.

Use this opportunity to make this your best New Year ever… no… your best YEAR ever. Go in to January with your essay in hand. Put it on the fridge, share it online, do whatever your must to make sure the resolutions you made stay in the forefront of your mind throughout the year (and not just the first few weeks of January). And then make sure you act on and stick to those resolutions.

Therefore, diversify your goals across professional, educational, health, or personal domains. Consider listing out specific goals for the year.

Step 4: Prepare a concise Thesis Statement

This thesis statement will encompass all the goals and objectives we listed, aiming to provide a succinct response to our question. Incorporate this thesis statement into your introductory paragraph.

New Year Resolution Thesis Statement

Step 5: Start your introduction

The next step is to write your introductory paragraph; remember, the introduction helps your readers understand what they are going to be reading about as they move forward in your essay. So, in this introduction, we can incorporate a hook - something that will engage the reader and help them understand the goals you're selecting and why you're selecting them. A great example of a hook for your New Year's resolution essay could be:

"New Year's magic whispers promises of growth. This essay is my map to a year brimming with purpose and triumphs."

Pro tip: Begin your introductory paragraph with a motivational quote to make the introduction more compelling and engaging.

Step 6: Create your Topic Sentences

Once we have our thesis statement, it's crucial to write clear topic sentences as openers for each goal. These sentences should briefly introduce and discuss each objective. Remember, at this point, our main tasks are to ensure our goals are noted down and well-understood. This step is pivotal, taking up a significant portion of the initial writing process for the New Year Resolution essay.

Step 7: Write Body Paragraphs

Now that we have our entire plan – the question we are addressing, our statement, and our goals – it's time to craft body paragraphs for each goal. In these paragraphs, we'll outline the action plan we've decided upon. For instance, if your goal is to read a book every month, you should have a clear set of instructions, such as the genre you're interested in, the number of pages you aim to read, and what to do if you miss a day.

New Year Resolution Body paragraphs

Pro Tip : It's always beneficial to include your motivation for achieving each goal. This way, if you ever feel lost, a quick review of your essay can provide guidance and get you back

Step 8: Conclude

Now that we are at the end of our essay, it is important to conclude it thoroughly. How can we do this effectively? Reconnect with the hook that we started in the introduction. Discuss how the journey outlined in your essay leads back to the promises of growth mentioned in the hook. The Importance Of New Year, New Me

essay for new year new me

Show More The majority of people start their new year with a list of resolutions. “New Year, New Me” is often said each time a new year comes. The reason for that is because every new year is a new chapter in our lives, and everything in the past that we were looking forward to changing can be changed or improved in a new year and we can add set that as a goal to become one of our new year's resolution. Setting goals can be very important. One of the reasons setting goals is a must is for you to point out what you want to do and not feel like you are just floating throughout the year. If you don’t set goals or think about them, this will leave you wondering what you actually did and accomplished the year before. Setting goals and making a list of resolution …show more content… Motivation is also very important while trying to achieve your goal. One of the most important things to keep in mind is to not give up or feel hopeless and to keep on trying no matter what if you did not reach and fulfill your goal. As long as you know that you tried, then keep on doing it because aiming and attempting to achieve a goal is the key to accomplish it, and right before when you achieve it or at least achieve some of it you will feel satisfied and proud of your own achievements or the fact that you tried your best. Goals make you feel that you are in control of your life. Goals are not all the same. Some of your goals might be about your health and to get in shape or about changing your lifestyle by trying to reduce the amount of waste you generate by living the “less waste lifestyle” or to even go vegan. In …show more content… What I mean by that is to learn more about it and know where I can get the right food also to have a balanced meal. I also aim to live a less waste lifestyle by producing less waste and to aid my home, planet earth. I also hope to encourage people to follow that lifestyle because one person makes a difference. In order to achieve this, I have a made my personal project about it. For my 3 year goal, I will be hopeful of entering a university I have been thinking about for a long time (insha'Allah). I will make sure to work hard and be the best I can be in order to achieve this goal. Finally, I have been thinking of my 10-year goal for a while since its years after, however, I might still be in university, so this goal will fall in my business category. My goal is to start a business with my sister. The business that we are planning to start is a vegan shop with healthy goods and sell reusable products to replace disposable ones in order to motivate people to produce less waste and save our home. The plane is to first deliver the goods then open a shop as the business grows.

Over 15 years ago, Robert Nash (2011) developed a new academic writing style called Scholarly Personal Narrative (SPN). Before SPN only the ‘objective they [we]’ was appropriate for research because scholars believed that only experts could support an agreeable or disagreeable topic. Nash (2011) wanted SPN to become, “a respectable research genre in higher education, particularly in the professional schools” (p. 4), so he wrote his first book, Liberating Scholarly Writing: The Power of Personal Narrative (2004).…

Goals are what you think you deserve; you're setting goals, because you want to be more, DO more than what everyone else thought you would.…

[introduction music]

Welcome to Easy Stories in English, the podcast that will take your English from OK to Good, and from Good to Great.

I am Ariel Goodbody, your host for this show. Today’s story is for beginners. The name of the story is New Year, New Me . You can find a transcript of the episode at EasyStoriesInEnglish.com/New . That’s EasyStoriesInEnglish.com/New . This contains the full story, as well as my conversation before it.

So, Happy New Year to everyone! As I record this, it is the 1st of January, and this morning it snowed and it was really pretty. So hopefully, that means we are going to have a good year. Hopefully, 2021 will be better than 2020!

I hope you had a fun New Year’s Eve.

New Year’s Eve is the 31st of December. It’s the last day of the year, and people have big parties on this night. ‘Eve’ is short for ‘evening’.

Personally, I had a very relaxed New Year’s Eve. I watched a film called The Princess Bride , I ate some food, I chatted with a friend online and I read a book.

Maybe you had a more exciting New Year’s Eve than I did. I would love to hear what you did. So come to EasyStoriesInEnglish.com/New and leave a comment and tell me, what did you do on New Year’s Eve?

Anyway, today’s story is all about New Year’s resolutions.

A New Year’s resolution is when you say, ‘Next year, I’m going to change this thing in my life.’ Usually, people make New Year’s resolutions a few days before the New Year. Most people make resolutions like, ‘I’m going to go to the gym every day this year,’ or, ‘I’m going to stop smoking this year.’ Personally, I don’t think New Year’s resolutions work. I don’t make them myself. Hopefully, this story will show you why!

Another phrase that is in this story is ‘slow and steady wins the race’. This means that it’s better to work, to move, slowly and steadily. We work a bit at a time. We shouldn’t run ahead really quickly because then we’ll get tired.

This phrase comes from a very popular story called The Rabbit and the Tortoise , and you can read this story on the podcast! So go to EasyStoriesInEnglish.com/Rabbit . This story will really show you the meaning of this phrase.

In other news, I finally finished Billy and Dim !

If you don’t know, Billy and Dim is a longer story that I wrote for the podcast. So you can listen to the first three chapters on the podcast, and you can read the whole story at EasyStoriesInEnglish.com/BillyAndDim .

The reason I didn’t release all the episodes on the podcast is because it’s an advanced story, and I know that it’s too difficult for many of you.

If you want to hear all of the story and not just read it, you can do that at Patreon. For just $5 a month, you can get all of Billy and Dim , as well as a bonus story every month. So that’s at Patreon.com/EasyStoriesInEnglish .

essay for new year new me

So Billy and Dim is a love story about two werewolves, two men who can turn into wolves. It’s kind of based on Little Red Riding Hood , but really, I just like writing stories about werewolves and kissing!

Anyway, I’m so sorry it took me so long to finish the story, but I’m really happy with it, and if you want to read the whole thing for free, go to EasyStoriesInEnglish.com/BillyAndDim .

It’s longer than the usual stories on here. It’s eight chapters long. So if you want a challenge for your English in 2021, this could be the perfect thing!

OK, I’ll just explain some words that are in today’s story.

A wise person is someone who is clever, always acts after thinking and has good judgement. Older people are usually wiser, because life has taught them many lessons. For example, Dumbledore in Harry Potter is a very wise character.

A spontaneous person is someone who does things without thinking. For example, maybe one day you wake up and think, ‘Today, I’m going to drive to a new place and make a friend.’ Or someone invites you to a party, and you say, ‘Sure!’ without thinking. Then you are a very spontaneous person. Personally, I am not spontaneous at all. I think carefully about everything, and I like to have plans. I hate doing things without a plan!

Some people are very fun. They like to play games, make jokes and go to parties. But some people are serious . They like to stay at home, read books and have long conversations. Personally, I’m quite a serious person… Well, I do like to make jokes and play games a lot, but also I don’t like going to parties very much!

The time when you are a child is your childhood . Your childhood goes from ages 0 to 13, usually. After that, you’re a teenager. Your childhood is very important, because if you have a bad childhood, it can be difficult to have a happy life later. People often think about their childhood when they’re older.

essay for new year new me

A gym is a place where you go to exercise. You pay some money every month, and then you can go to the gym and do exercise there. Gyms have all kinds of machines you can use, weights to lift and so on. Some gyms even have swimming pools and saunas. Personally, I have never gone to a gym. I am very nervous about doing exercise in front of other people. But now I work out at home. Maybe after coronavirus, I’ll join a gym… We’ll see!

essay for new year new me

When you frown , you push your eyebrows together. Your eyebrows are the hairs above your eyes, on your head. When you are angry, or you don’t understand something, you frown. You shouldn’t frown too much, though, because then you’ll get wrinkles, lines on your forehead.

When you do something all at once , you don’t do it in small parts. You do 100% at the same time. For example, maybe you have a big chocolate cake. Normally, you would eat it slice by slice. Maybe it would take you a few days to eat it. But you love chocolate cake so much, so you eat it all at once! Mmm… Well, then you’ll probably have a stomach ache. Ouch! Children usually like to eat things all at once, but adults eat more slowly.

When you have water in a bottle, but you want to have it in a glass, you pour it. I am very bad at pouring drinks. Usually, half of the drink goes into the glass, and half goes onto the floor! When you pour beer, you have to be careful so that the beer does not all turn into white stuff called foam, because the foam then goes away and you have less beer to drink.

When you smile , you move the sides of your mouth up. It is like a laugh, but smaller. You want to show that you are happy. If you like someone, you smile at them. In some countries, people smile a lot more than in other countries. Sometimes, Thailand is called ‘the land of smiles’.

In the morning when you wake up, what’s the first thing that happens? Your alarm clock goes off ! It makes a horrible, loud sound and you run across the room to turn it off. When someone rings your phone, it goes off, too. Finally, if someone tries to steal your car, the alarm will go off. Well, hopefully it will!

If you enjoy the podcast and want more, you can support us on Patreon. For just $2 a month you can get exercises with each episode, and for $5, you get an extra story every month, as well as Elevenses with Ariel , a daily conversational podcast for intermediate learners. Last week I talked about how the UK government cancelled Christmas, quitting technology for a day, the end of Brexit, strange New Year’s traditions and the film You’ve Got Mail . You can support the show and get all the extra content at Patreon.com/EasyStoriesInEnglish . That’s Patreon.com/EasyStoriesInEnglish .

A big thank-you to our new patrons: David Meir, Choi Wai and Agnieszka Lupa. Thank you so much. Your support really means a lot to me.

OK, so listen and enjoy!

Once, there were two sisters. One of them was very wise, and always thought before doing something. She was called Minerva. The other one was very spontaneous. She always started new things without thinking, and she often had many problems. She was called Diana.

One year, Minerva and Diana were spending New Year’s Eve together. Usually, Minerva spent New Year’s alone. She read books, thought about the year, and planned the next year. Usually, Diana spent New Year’s with other people. She partied, drank lots of alcohol and felt very bad the next day.

But Minerva and Diana hadn’t seen each other all year, so they decided to spend New Year’s together. Minerva thought, Oh no, it’s going to be so boring for Diana! It will just be me and her. Diana thought, Oh no, I’m going to bother Minerva so much! She’s so serious , and I’m always so loud and spontaneous.

But actually, they had a lovely time together. They ate dinner and drank wine, and laughed a lot as they remembered their childhood.

Finally, Diana said, ‘Oh, Sister. I suppose usually at this time you are making your New Year’s resolutions.’

Minerva laughed. ‘No, no. I don’t make New Year’s resolutions.’

Diana was surprised. ‘ You don’t make resolutions? But you’re the most serious person I know! You go to the gym, and cook healthy food, and read books… How do you do all that without New Year’s resolutions?’

Minerva drank some wine. ‘Let me ask you something. How much are you planning on drinking tonight?’

Diana frowned. ‘You plan how much you’re going to drink?’

‘ No ,’ said Minerva. ‘But just tell me. Around how much are you going to drink?’

Diana thought. Usually on New Year’s, she drank a lot. But tonight, it was just her and her sister. So she would probably only drink one bottle of wine.

‘One bottle,’ she said finally.

‘And are you going to drink it all at once?’

‘Of course not!’ said Diana. ‘I know I drink a lot, but I don’t drink that much.’

‘Ah,’ said Minerva, ‘but you are still drinking one bottle. You are just drinking it all at once.’

‘We were talking about resolutions,’ said Diana. ‘Why did you ask me about wine?’

Minerva laughed and poured Diana more wine. ‘Tell me then, Sister. What are your resolutions this year?’

‘Oh, this year, this year!’ said Diana. ‘This is going to be the year I change my life. I’m going to change everything , you understand? Actually, this bottle of wine is going to be my last. In the New Year, I’m only going to drink water and tea. And I’m going to exercise every day, just like you. Yes, I’m going to go to the gym! And of course, I need to change what I eat. I always eat burgers and chips, and look at what happens.’ She showed Minerva her stomach. ‘Horrible! No, next year I will make salads and soups and all kinds of healthy food.’

‘Mm-hmm,’ said Minerva. ‘And which will you do first?’

Diana frowned. ‘I’m going to do all of them at once, of course! What about you? You don’t have any resolutions?’

Minerva sighed. ‘I suppose I have one resolution. But it’s a bit different. I’m going to learn to draw.’

‘Oh! That’s a good idea. So you’re going to practise every day?’

‘Yes, I think so,’ said Minerva.

‘How much do you have to draw, then?’

Minerva frowned. ‘Well, I don’t have to draw anything. I’m doing it because I want to. But I’m planning on doing five minutes a day.’

‘Hah, five minutes!’ said Diana. ‘You really are quite strange, Sister. Wait!’ Diana stood up. ‘I have an idea. Let’s have a competition. Oh, we always had competitions in our childhood! Next year, we’ll talk again, and we’ll see who completed their resolution better.’

Minerva smiled. ‘OK, Sister. But you know I’ll win.’

So the next day, on the first of January, Diana woke up early to go to the gym.

Well, her alarm clock went off, but she felt horrible, so she turned the alarm off and went back to sleep.

Two hours later, she got up and went to the gym. It was filled with people.

Aha, thought Diana. Everyone else has the same idea. That means it’s a good idea! I’m going to be so healthy.

She had eaten so much the night before, so she needed to work hard today. She got on the exercise machine and ran. She lifted heavy things. She rode exercise bikes. She swam.

In the end, she exercised for two hours. She was so tired, and her body hurt so much, but she was happy.

‘I’m going to show Minerva!’ she said.

But the next day, when Diana’s alarm clock went off, she couldn’t get out of bed. Her whole body hurt too much!

‘That’s OK,’ said Diana. ‘Everyone needs a break. I’ll do something else today. I’ll cook a healthy meal!’

But Diana didn’t cook very often. She didn’t know what food was healthy, and she didn’t know how to cook it. She went to the supermarket to buy food, but it took an hour, because she didn’t know what food to buy. Then she had to carry the heavy bags home, and her arms hurt so much.

When she got home, Diana said, ‘I’ll just take a short break.’

She poured a glass of wine and then stopped.

‘No!’ She remembered what she had told Minerva. ‘I can’t drink wine! I’ll have tea.’

She made a cup of tea, but she left the glass of wine on the table. The glass of wine stood there, looking at her. The tea wasn’t very nice. It was a strange, healthy tea. Diana didn’t know what was in it. But it wasn’t good. And the wine looked so good…

‘Well, it’s just one glass, isn’t it?’

Eleven months later, Diana was at a party.

‘So, Diana!’ said her friend Victor. ‘What are you doing for New Year’s?’

Suddenly, Diana remembered her competition with Minerva.

‘Oh no!’ she cried.

She had forgotten about her New Year’s resolutions. She had stopped going to the gym, but she still paid money to the gym every month. She had stopped cooking healthy food, and there were still old carrots in her fridge. And she had drunk lots of wine and beer all year.

‘What is it?’ said Victor.

Diana ran to the bathroom and poured her wine into the toilet.

‘I still have a month!’ she said. ‘I have a month to win the competition… This is going to be the healthiest month of my life!’

Victor didn’t understand what she was saying, but she left before he could ask.

For the whole of December, Diana was healthy. She went to the gym every day, she cooked healthy food and she didn’t drink any alcohol. Oh, it was hard!

But she had to win. All her childhood, Minerva had won their competitions. Just once, she wanted to win. Today, she wasn’t going to be spontaneous. No, she would be wiser than Minerva!

When New Year’s Eve arrived, Diana was very tired. She had worked so hard. She had exercised for hours every day.

‘Now who’s serious?’ she said. ‘If Minerva only did five minutes a day, she will still be very bad at drawing!’

So Diana went to visit her sister. When she came into the house, she gasped.

All of the walls had pictures on them. They were big, beautiful pictures that Minerva had drawn!

‘How is that possible?’ said Diana. ‘You only drew for five minutes a day!’

Minerva smiled. ‘Well, yes, at first I did. But after a month, I really enjoyed drawing. So I drew for ten minutes. Then twenty minutes. Now I draw for over an hour every day.’

‘You can’t do that!’ said Diana. ‘That’s… how did you do that? All year? I exercised so much on the first day, and then…’

‘Then you stopped?’ said Minerva.

‘Yes! How did you know?’

Minerva smiled. ‘You can’t change your whole life in one day. You know what they say, slow and steady wins the race .’

‘Ugh!’ said Diana. She sat down on the sofa. ‘Do you have any wine? I’ll drink it slowly and steadily.’

‘I love you, Sister,’ said Minerva, and kissed her on the head. ‘Maybe next year, just go to the gym for five minutes a day? At first.’

Diana smiled. ‘You’re so wise, Sister. I want to be like you.’

‘Now, now,’ said Minerva. ‘I want to be spontaneous like you. All our childhood, everyone said that you were so fun, and I was so serious and boring.’

Diana was surprised. ‘You want to be like me ? But I do everything wrong!’

‘No, you don’t,’ said Minerva. ‘There’s one thing you know how to do very well.’

Diana thought, but she didn’t know what it was. ‘What do you mean?’

Diana laughed. ‘Alright, then. This is going to be the best New Year’s Eve ever!’

What a nice story Ariel ! with an incredible message 🙂 . In New Year’s Eve I helped my mom to decorate a part of my house with balloons and other things for the night. Then at the night we took pictures and celebrated listening and dancing 80’s pop music, salsa and cumbia ( a popular genre of music in Peru ) Was a fun day.

The day I returned home after being kidnapped by Islamic terrorists

Beth and Tommy in Portaledge in a tent on the side of a cliff

Beth Rodden is a professional rock climber who, along with three other climbers, was kidnapped and held hostage by Islamic militants in 2000 while on a climbing trip in Kyrgyzstan. The following is excerpted from her new memoir, “A Light Through the Cracks,” about the day she returned home to the U.S.

Amsterdam, August 2000

By the time my boyfriend, Tommy Caldwell, and I made it to Amsterdam’s gleaming, sterile airport, we had been passed along a half dozen times, like an important but increasingly well-worn package. Military helicopters had brought us and our other two climbing partners from base to base. We’d endured a surreal ride on a private jet from the last military base to the capital, Bishkek, traveling alongside the tipsy and jovial president of Kyrgyzstan. He’d patted us on the shoulders like a grandfather and claimed us long enough for a photo op and a speech to local media in a language we couldn’t understand. Then he handed the four of us off to the American embassy, which scrambled to find us flights home. A few days later, Tommy and I drove across the Kazakhstan border, in a hired car with a diplomatic escort, to the international airport in Almaty, and finally a commercial jet took us from Central Asia to the edge of the Atlantic. Now we had just one more flight to go.

Our tickets were a last-minute mess, and we needed to check on our connection. As we crossed the terminal, I carried a brown paper gift bag from the airport candy shop — despite what we’d been through, I still wanted to bring my older brother a present from this trip. I watched the families clustered around the gates, the lone business travelers perched at the bars, scanning each face around me. I’d been on edge through practically every step of the journey: The embassy in Bishkek had felt almost safe, but at the hotel where they’d sent us to get some sleep, I’d felt vulnerable and stayed vigilant.

Book

In the airport, I was hungry again. When we’d made it to the second army base, the one that felt like a cluster of portable classrooms set down on a vast brown plain, we’d stuffed ourselves with barley and warm buttered bread, but I could not stay full. I had just eaten two chocolate croissants. Still, my stomach felt like a cavern. My brother didn’t really need a present, did he?

I ate half the chocolate in the bag before we got to our gate.

The line at the KLM Royal Dutch Airlines counter felt so orderly. The whole airport did. Just existing there felt like getting a big, soothing hug. When we’d boarded the flight in Kazakhstan, the passengers had formed no line. Everybody just pushed in a scrum toward the plane. Tommy and I stood frozen, like the good, shocked scouts that we were, and got lost in the flood. I felt so fragile, so extremely fragile, and so resigned to that fragile state.

We weren’t safe. That was obvious to me. No line, no order, no rule of law. I loved rules. People smoked openly on that first plane.

“Next,” the flight attendant said as we arrived at the counter. Her voice was as professionally cheerful as her uniform: light blue skirt, light blue jacket, white blouse underneath.

“We’re here to check in for our flight,” I said.

“Wonderful. May I please have your boarding passes?”

I mumbled something apologetic and handed her a few crumpled, dirty sheets of paper. “I think we have to get our seats and stuff from you.”

She pinched her brow as she read our mess of documents. She typed vigorously. I was sure this meant we weren’t going to make it home.

“Can you wait one second?” she asked, flashing a strained smile. She disappeared behind a wall.

Beth Rodden climbing a boulder

I looked at Tommy. He stared into the blank space where the woman had just been. I couldn’t tell if he was as scared as I was, if he was also monitoring the people pooling and flowing around us for any threat. I felt like I had grown an invisible antenna that vibrated continually, never at rest. Never letting me rest. A memory tried to surface inside me: a body in silhouette, sailing off a dark cliff. A crunch, and an exhale. I forced it back down.

Two blond attendants now appeared where there had been one.

“Can you tell me: Was it something KLM did?” the new flight attendant asked.

I looked back at Tommy. Did he know what she was talking about? Did she know what had happened? Tommy shrugged.

“Wait, what?” I said. “What was something . . . ?”

“Well, um, how to say this,” the flight attendant said. “It says on your tickets, ‘Emotionally distressed passengers, please take care.’ So, we are just wondering if it’s something KLM did.” She looked concerned and defensive in her caring, like a hospital billing manager. She didn’t want to know the answer, but she had to ask.

I didn’t want a stranger to try to comfort me, but I did feel the need to comfort her. So I said, “Oh no, definitely not. We were just kidnapped and we want to go home.”

I couldn’t believe how easily the sentence came out. We were just kidnapped . . . I’d never said it so plainly before.

The flight attendant exhaled all her breath at once, stunned and relieved. “Well, good,” she said.

Well, good?

“KLM does our best. How about business-class seats for you two?” She printed our fresh, flat boarding passes. Tommy and I boarded the plane.

We ate every meal and every snack that was offered to us on the long ride home. My hunger was like a portal opened into a galaxy — infinite, absolute. When I was in middle school, I used to watch my older brother, David, eat, stunned by the mountain of food he could consume. Now, it felt strangely freeing to eat with that type of abandon. I hadn’t done that since ninth grade, when I became obsessed with climbing.

I could eat, but I still couldn’t sleep. My anxiety kept me wide awake, and my wakefulness in turn meant I had nothing but space and time for the anxiety to spin itself tighter in my body. I kept wondering if the plane would crash. That seemed possible, maybe even probable, given how the rest of our trip had gone. An appropriate ending, in a way. I wondered if I’d be scared. What would Tommy say to me before impact? Would it hurt? Our backpack, stuffed at our feet, was filled with souvenirs purchased in a blur during our strange interlude in Bishkek, between our flight with the president and our diplomatic drive across the border. I had stuffed the paltry remains of the airport chocolate into our bag alongside the rest of the things we’d acquired: a hand-carved wooden chess set, a wool hanging. Proof that we’d done something major and been somewhere cool. What were we thinking?

Beth Rodden

The backpack that sat at our feet had been lost in transit when we’d first landed in Kyrgyzstan, full of hope for our climbing adventure, and was waiting for us, perversely intact, at the hotel in Bishkek after our escape. We’d left San Francisco with 20 expedition duffels, and all I had left was this backpack filled with trinkets from a country to which I’d never return. Maybe that was why we’d bought them, with the money Tommy had wadded up in his sock just before we were marched away from our camp at gunpoint. Maybe it was some attempt to fabricate a decent memory of the place.

My hands trembled the whole 12 hours to San Francisco. I knew I needed sleep, but if the plane did crash, wasn’t I supposed to be awake for that? I had no idea how to act, what to do or say or who to be when we saw our parents. I’d left as a 20-year-old girl full of herself, ready for the world, sure I was doing something extraordinary. I was living out the dream I’d stared at in the posters I hung on my bedroom wall: climbing to incredible heights in far-off places. My mother had hardly traveled, certainly not by my age. I’d felt so awfully superior as I’d walked down the jetway when we left. I didn’t even turn back to wave.

My parents had given me everything — pride, freedom, confidence. They trusted me. They trusted my decisions. They trusted the world. Now I was returning home a broken mess. I’d spoken to them a few times from the embassy in Bishkek, the words mainly drowned in my tears. I wanted to be small again, so small I could crawl through the phone into their arms, where they’d hold me and shush me and stroke my head. I wanted my mother to say, “Mama’s here, Mama’s here,” just like she always did when I was a girl. I wanted to shrink back into that little-girl body and lay my head in her lap and cry.

How was I supposed to carry myself getting off the jetway? Was the idea to act strong, like I was fine? I was weirdly good at that. Or should I literally run into their arms?

Now — how to do this? How was I supposed to carry myself getting off the jetway? Was the idea to act strong, like I was fine? I was weirdly good at that. Or should I literally run into their arms, like I had been dreaming of doing for the past eight days? I’d never spoken easily with my parents about feelings. They were so kind, so present, and gently but firmly on my team. But inside, I always felt nervous, like there was a line I was afraid to cross, like I needed to be tougher, solid, unbreakable. And even if I could lay my head in my mother’s lap and have her say, “Mama’s here,” would that still work to soothe me? I was not the same person I had been when I left. My thoughts flapped like the loose end of a film in an old-fashioned movie projector, the front reel spinning empty.

I looked over at Tommy. Maybe he’d know what to do. His head was slumped at a 45-degree angle to his chest, his mouth dropped open, snoring. He was sick. His brain was more lucid and less spastic than mine, but his body was breaking down. He had a fever. I envied Tommy’s oblivion. I felt so alone.

We landed. My palms were sweating, but Tommy’s hands felt strong. That felt like a plan: I’d hold his strong hand and we’d present a united front, though I hadn’t told him about my looping, flapping mind. I was trying to stay composed — for him, for me, maybe for my parents too. We collected our bag of souvenirs from under the airplane seats. The souvenirs promised our trip was normal. We were normal. I grabbed a free chocolate bar and a package of cookies from the plane’s galley as we exited. I never did anything like that, but now instead of saying, “Don’t eat that, Rodden,” I thought, “Just in case we don’t have any other food.”

I didn’t race off the plane like I had seen people do in movies, straight into their loved ones’ arms. Instead I walked so slowly that other passengers started passing us. I was desperate to return home, to the narrow twin bed in my parents’ house, on our quiet block filled with minivans and white Honda sedans, to replant myself in the flat farmland around Davis, California, to recommit to the safe wide sidewalks. I just didn’t know how. I wondered if people could tell we’d changed: if we walked differently or stood slightly less straight, if we’d absorbed so much fear and terror that we now emitted it.

New Year, New Me: Set Goals That You’re Excited About

Posted on December 30, 2020

It’s that time of year when people are either looking back on their accomplishments or wondering “Where did all the time go?”

Whether you belong to the first camp or the second, we hope that you’re celebrating your wins, big or small. And in a year that’s been filled with uncertainty and challenges, every small step counts as a big leap. So even if you had to put your goals on the back burner, try to celebrate what you did accomplish. Maybe you found time to send a card to a loved one or take long walks or read a good book.

Every small act is a big achievement.

This time of year is also synonymous with new beginnings and goals. A blank slate. A new chapter. A chance to refresh our lives. It seems only fitting to use this time to reflect on the successes and challenges of the past year, and define goals and visions for the new one.

On the flip side, the new year can also be a harsh reminder of lost potential. And 2020 definitely didn’t help in that department. Whether it was unmet deadlines or sneakers that were stuffed in the back of the closet, we’ve all had goals fall by the wayside.

So here are some compassionate ways that we can approach our goals and new year’s resolutions for 2021.

  • Instead of being hard on yourself, use this time of year for gentle reflection and lessons learned.
  • Instead of feeling pressured to be the new and improved version of yourself, set goals that feel authentic to you.
  • Instead of wondering where did all the time go, commit to living mindfully, starting right now.

Below are tips and exercises to help you set goals that you’ll be excited about. Plus, ideas on how to hold yourself accountable and stick with it when things get tough. So find a quiet space, light a candle or make a pot of tea, and grab your favorite planner . Here’s to a safe and prosperous 2021.

Set goals that you actually want to achieve

This seems like a no-brainer, but how many times have you set a goal that actually made you miserable? We think that we want to “lose weight” or “be more productive” but in our pursuit of our ideal, improved selves, we end up restricting our lives. We ban sugar, alcohol, TV, and well, fun. We force ourselves to wake up early or go for a run in the bitter cold.  No wonder so many people end up abandoning their resolutions by February !

So instead of setting goals that you *think* you should achieve, try setting goals that will actually make you feel happy and fulfilled.

  • What is something that I’ve always wanted to do?
  • Who are people or organizations I admire and want to develop relationships with?
  • What is something that will help me grow? Either spiritually, intellectually, or professionally?
  • What do I find fun?

If you’re not sure what the answers are, trying journaling for a few minutes a day. See what comes up for you. You can also reference old journal entries or even old photos from your phone. What moments brought joy? What experiences energized and inspired you?

So, if you’re proud of the time you baked a cake from scratch, then make sure it’s compatible with your new goal to eat healthier. Instead of restricting sweets from your diet, you might want to try a healthier option.

If you’re trying to be more productive but you hate waking up early, explore other peak times for you. Maybe late afternoon is your ideal time. Or maybe you’re more of a night owl. Or maybe you just need to spend small increments of time every day to work on your goal.

If your goal is to meditate more, but you can’t just stick to a routine, then see if there are other ways to practice mindfulness. Maybe you’ll find that going for a long walk is a meditative act for you or drawing in  your coloring book or taking a long bath.

It’s about aligning your goal with your natural rhythms and desires. If cherishing a morning cup of coffee is meaningful to you, don’t use that time to work on writing your novel or go for a run. You don’t want your goal to upend your life, you want it to support your life and make it more fun and fulfilling.

Set smaller goals

After an uncertain year like 2020,  it’s natural to want to give up goal setting altogether. But making plans is actually key to our well-being . Human beings actually like to set goals and look forward to things, it’s in our very nature.

That’s why setting smaller goals can be helpful.  In fact, smaller goals might actually even be better for you.

Smaller goals can hold your attention span and sustain your energy. And when you achieve smaller goals, your confidence will grow and set you up for achieving even more success.

Create quarterly goals/projects

You’re more likely to achieve a goal when it’s time-bound. That’s why quarterly goals are highly effective. 90 days is short enough to sustain your energy and interest, while also long enough to complete a big project. You can track your progress with a 3-month planner and visualize your project with a project planning pad.

Here are some ideas for quarterly goals:

Plan a community project. Try organizing a clothing drive or distributing food or hygiene kits to your community. Not only will managing all the different aspects keep you energized and productive, but helping your community will make you feel so fulfilled.

Cook through all the recipes of a cookbook. You can use the 3-month planner to keep track of your favorite recipes and lessons learned. By the end of the 3 months, you’ll be cooking like a pro in no time.

Do a mindful activity everyday. This can include meditation, coloring books, yoga, knitting, or a leisurely walk.

Develop a gratitude practice. You can add a gratitude practice to your morning or evening routine. Keep a gratitude journal on your bedside table as an easy reminder to write something down every day.

Learn a new language. Try doing DuoLingo for a few minutes a day. You’re more likely to maintain a habit if you start off small and then slowly build on it. Use the 30-day challenge in the 2021 planner to monitor your progress and sustain your routine.

Meet new people. Reach out to people you admire on social media or sign up for new online classes.

Need more ideas? You can find inspiration for new goals here .

Check-in with your goals

After defining your goals, it’s good to check in with them on a regular basis so that you can keep yourself motivated and accountable. Here are some ways to stay on top of your goals.

Use visual reminders. Write down your goals on post-its notes and place them around your workspace to motivate yourself. Keep a project planning pad on your desk to help you stay organized and see key dates and action items.

Hold a planning session. Conduct a Sunday night planning session to review progress on your goals  on a weekly and monthly basis.

Have a support system. It’s easier to stick with your goals when you have positive reinforcement. Listen to inspiring podcasts . Establish a check-in with friends and email each other once a week or hold monthly zoom calls to discuss progress and challenges. Talk about your goals on social media and find like minded people share goals with.

Remember: be gentle with yourself during this process. When it comes to goals, it’s completely normal to lose motivation and confidence from time to time. Don’t let yourself be discouraged by the pace of your progress, just make sure to stick with it. It’s okay if you haven’t picked up a paintbrush in weeks, it’s never too late to pick it up again. It’s okay if you’ve abandoned your meditation routine, just start right now.

If you experience setbacks with your goals, try to reflect on them and gauge any lessons learned . By gaining clarity on failure and rejection, you’ll be better equipped to handle any bumps in the road in the future.

Billie Eilish finally remembers who she is

essay for new year new me

Billie Eilish's third album, created as always alongside her brother and collaborator Finneas, is titled Hit Me Hard and Soft.

Billie Eilish has won nine Grammys, two Oscars and two Golden Globes, and every single album she's released has hit No. 1. You'd be forgiven if you forgot she's just 22 years old. But that swift and early rise also means she's grown up in the public eye, and the spotlight of social media.

On Eilish's new album, Hit Me Hard and Soft , her voice resounds with new confidence when a song calls for it, though she can still return to her signature whispered vulnerability when she wants to devastate. The song "Lunch" is one of the catchiest songs she and her brother and collaborator Finneas have ever served, with openly lustful lyrics that are equal parts silly and sultry. "Skinny," meanwhile, is a delicate masterpiece, with Eilish exposing inner thoughts about her body while turning the public's gaze back on itself.

Morning Edition host Leila Fadel talked with Billie Eilish and Finneas about how their years of collaboration have changed them, as artists and as people, and the new sides of their creativity that have surfaced on Hit Me Hard and Soft . Hear the radio version at the audio link, and read more of their conversation below.

This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

Leila Fadel: I want to start with your voice, Billie: You seem more confident pushing your voice in different ways. What's different about this album?

Billie Eilish: So many things. You know, I started recording when I was 13 — my voice was very young, and I could only do so much with it. And of course, at the time, the way we always do, I was like, "This is my voice, and this is how it's going to sound forever." I didn't think about how you grow up and everything changes. Over time, touring for many years and getting back into voice lessons, my voice has completely matured and changed and grown. I'm able to do things that I never thought I would be able to. It's been the most amazing journey ever.

Hit Me Hard and Soft was really the first time that I was aware of the things that I could do, the ways I could play with my voice, and actually did that. That's one thing I feel very proud of with this album — my bravery, vocally.

Billie Eilish: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert

Billie Eilish: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert

Fadel: Is there any one song where you were like, "Hey, I did that with my voice?"

Eilish: "The Greatest" — that one, for sure. But I think the main one that I couldn't even believe that I hit was "Birds of a Feather" — there's a belt on the last chorus. I was playing around with different melodies because I wanted it to be a little different than the others. And I remember being like, "Oh, I should probably go up there , but I really don't think I can," and trying everything else that I could possibly do instead of that, to get away from it. Then I was like, "You know what? I'm just going to have to try."

Fadel: You told Rolling Stone about the making of this album, "This whole process has felt like I'm coming back to the girl that I was. I've been grieving her." What do you mean by that?

Eilish: I think that a big part of us being able to finish this album was me needing to be shoved out of my comfort zone: I had to be pushed out of it to figure out what I was doing and what I wanted and who I was. I started out really young, and people decided who I was for a long time, and that made me feel insane — so I really wanted to prove everyone wrong all the time. For this album, I finally got over the need to prove everyone wrong. I just figured it out myself, and it wasn't about explaining myself — it was about expressing myself. I think that's what we did.

Fadel: Has that been hard? I mean, it's kind of incredible what you've done at just 22, all that you've already created and been recognized for. But you've grown up very much under scrutiny in the public eye.

Eilish: You know, so much of my life is f***ing awesome, and I'm so aware of how privileged I am. But becoming an adult in front of everyone is very scary and stressful and really means that you never grow up, in a way. I'm not complaining, but I also am: It's kind of horrible, you know, starting at 13, and then " Bad Guy " came out when I was 16. It was a lot, and it still is a lot. Every day I struggle with figuring myself out. Instead of just getting to feel how it feels to learn something about myself, I have to hear about what everyone else thinks about it.

Fadel: Finneas, some of these arrangements are spare; some are very lush and layered. I'm interested to know about the secret sounds a producer layers into a mix.

Finneas: What I always try to go for when I'm working with any artist — but Billie and I obviously work the closest, she's really in the room for 99.9% of everything that I'm doing, production-wise — it's to inspire her. If there's drums that we're writing on a song like "Lunch" — or "Skinny," where I'm sitting with an electric guitar playing as we're sitting there writing — to me, it's just about helping to articulate the story and the sentiment of the song. If there's a line that I think should suddenly be three-part harmony, it's because of the content or the emotionality of it. I think production is all about context.

The thing that was novel for me on this album, as opposed to our other albums, was the incorporation of a string quartet [the Attacca Quartet ]. I've spent a fair amount of time in the last two years composing for film and have had the opportunity to write parts for string quartets and have loved doing it, learning that craft.

Fadel: How has your approach to working together changed since " Ocean Eyes ," that first single of yours?

Finneas: I think that it hasn't changed in some ways — and it's changed immensely. The real truth is that we've just gotten better and better at communicating and articulating. Like Billie is talking about with her vocal confidence, I had barely ever produced anything. Now, we've made her albums together, I've produced music for other artists, and I feel more confident. I've just had more hours behind the keyboard, so to speak.

Billie Eilish Can't Wait To See The Future

Music Interviews

Billie eilish can't wait to see the future.

Making this album felt, for me, like two people who had the opportunity to learn their craft over the last seven years. We were just kind of having fun with it, with all the tools that we developed.

Fadel: I'm one of five kids — and I love my siblings, but we also fight like crazy. I feel like that's part of love. Do you guys ever get sick of each other? Do you ever fight over the process?

Eilish: We don't get sick of each other, but we definitely fight — I mean, we're siblings, that's going to happen. But honestly, it's almost better that it happens. I feel like when you work with somebody who isn't a sibling, when you have a disagreement, it's really hard to say it. You really don't want to offend them. What if they never want to work with you again? With your family, it's much harder to burn a bridge and break up. It takes a lot of effort. I think that when Finneas and I have a disagreement, we don't waste time trying to be nice. We, politely- ish , say, "I don't like that." And then, if we do get into an argument, we're siblings and we'll get through it because we love each other. It's nice, honestly.

Fadel: Is there any specific song on the album where you kind of duked it out, and the finished product was a product of you guys working through it?

Finneas: I feel like "Blue" was a song that really puzzled us.

Fadel: And I hear you singing on that one, right?

Finneas: No — we wrote that part in a different key, and then we shifted it into the key that it was in. When you shift the vocal, it changes the formant. It's just Billie's voice pitched down — but I'm prepared for everybody to think it's me.

"Blue" has elements of a piece of music from before Billie's first album came out. It has elements of a piece of music from Billie's second album that never came out. I don't know that we had it out or anything, but we were both so puzzled by it that we had a debate about what to do for various parts. It was something that was driving Billie crazy. We always knew we loved the second half, but the first half, we were like, "It doesn't feel right." I remember I just layered tons of drums on it, and it changed the whole vibe.

Fadel: We have to ask about "Lunch." It's about raw, animal attraction. What inspired that song?

Eilish: This was one of the first ones that we made for the album. We only had the hook, and then, honest to God, like a year later, we came back and we wrote the rest of it.

As soon as we wrote that hook, it was like, "Oh, OK, we got something here!" — but we were stumped on it for a long time. It's really hard to know that something could be really good, and also could be bad if you make it bad. We put a lot into that one once we finally got back to it. I love that song. It's so fun and it's silly and it's ... I don't know. Life is so unserious. It's important to remember to have a little fun with it.

Billie Eilish Is The Weird Achiever Of The Year

Best Music Of 2019

Billie eilish is the weird achiever of the year.

Fadel: How do you stay so open and vulnerable in your music as you also deal with being so public, because of what you chose to do in life?

Eilish: When we write a song, I'm not really thinking about, "Everyone's going to hear this and have something to say!" That headspace can really block you. I think it's important to write songs with the idea, "I don't have to put anything out if I don't want to." You should just be as vulnerable as you can without thinking about how people are going to hear it, and then go from there. Make the song while thinking, "No one's going to hear this." Then, if you love it and you feel comfortable, you discuss if I'm OK with this out in the world.

Finneas: Two things. One: She makes music with her brother. You know I'd never play anyone anything that she was uncomfortable with. And then the other thing is, sometimes a song can feel incredibly vulnerable the day that you write it, because you're living through it. And then that song comes out a year later, and you have perspective. The situation has become history.

Fadel: It must be a blessing to have that safe space with somebody you've known your whole life, that you know you can trust in those moments when you're figuring it out with the music before anybody else ever hears it.

Eilish: Oh my God, it's such a blessing. I can't even. When I talk to fellow artist friends of mine and they say they're in the studio with some random person they don't know for the next two weeks, I'm like, "How the hell are you going to do that?" It's so crazy to me.

Having Finneas is the coolest thing in the world for me. I'm an open book — maybe to a fault — in my life. But I also am not super-comfortable with vulnerability or weakness. Being with my brother and having him be someone who knows me so well, sometimes he can see something that I'm doing or feeling before I even know that I'm doing or feeling it, and that is really powerful and special. I think without that, it would be really different.

I Was Shot in Vermont. What if It Had Been in the West Bank?

A photo illustration with pictures of forests and scrubby hills in the background, and the closeup of an eye in the foreground.

By Hisham Awartani

Mr. Awartani is a Palestinian American student at Brown University.

That frigid autumn night in Burlington, Vt., was not the first time I had stared down the barrel of a gun. It was not even the first time I had been fired at. Half a world away, in the West Bank, it had happened before.

On a hot day in May 2021, a classmate and I, both of us 17 at the time, were protesting near a checkpoint in Ramallah. Bullets, both rubber and metal, were flying into the crowd, even though we were unarmed. I was hit with one of the former; my classmate, the latter. Before, we had been students cramming for our chemistry final; then, on the other side of Israeli rifles, we were a mass of terrorists, disqualified from humanity.

So that night in November, when my two friends and I were shot while we were walking on North Prospect Street, I was not particularly surprised to find myself lying on the lawn of a white house and blood splattered across the screen of my phone. Back home in Ramallah, I knew that I was one wrong move away from bleeding out; Israeli soldiers have been known to prevent or hinder paramedics from tending to injured Palestinians. But I had never expected to feel this on a quiet street in Vermont, on a stroll before Thanksgiving dinner.

The shooting of three Palestinian Americans in Burlington has received more sustained coverage than any single act of violence against Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank since Oct. 7. Why did reporters and news channels interview our mothers and take our portraits when young men my age have been shot at by snipers , detained indefinitely without trial and treated as a statistic?

It’s a question that has eaten away at me these past months. Was it the shock of such a violent crime in peaceful Vermont? Was it that my friends and I went to well-known American colleges? Did the timing of our shooting during a holiday weekend play a role? I’m sure it did, but to me, the determining factor is the reframing of the crime: Instead of settlements, the Oslo Accords or the intifada, the conversation around our shooting involved terms such as “gun violence,” “hate crimes” and “right-wing extremism.” Instead of being maimed in Arab streets, we were shot in small-town America. Instead of being seen as Palestinians, for once, we were seen as people.

Death and dehumanization are status quo for Palestinians. We grow used to being funneled through checkpoints and strip-searched, assault rifles trained on us all the while. The result is a constant existential calculus: If an unarmed autistic man , an 8-year-old boy and a journalist wearing a vest emblazoned “Press” could be perceived to be such a threat that they were shot dead, then I must accept that by existing as a Palestinian, I am a legitimate target.

This dynamic was so ubiquitous to me that I could not quite put it into words until I left the West Bank to attend college in the United States. My classes gave me the vocabulary to understand dehumanization, the portrayal of the colonized as a violent primitive. I realized that the infrastructure of the occupation — the checkpoints, the detentions, the armed settlers encroaching — is built around the violence I am assumed to be capable of, not who I am.

This system of othering — Israeli-only roads, fenced-off settlements, the “security” wall — is an inherent part of the Israeli state psyche. Yet far from ensuring Israelis’ safety, it instead inflicts mass humiliation on Palestinians. Close to half of the Palestinians alive today were born after the violence of the second intifada, and have interacted with Israelis only in the confines of the security apparatus built in its wake. The military apparatus in my home in the West Bank is a judge, jury and executioner. While settlers in the West Bank are subject to Israeli civilian law, Palestinians are subject to military law. It is as if we are all already combatants.

The dehumanization we face is twofold: Beyond the day-to-day aspects of our lives, it permeates the media coverage of what we experience. In the news, our militancy is presumed, our killers unnamed, and our deaths repackaged into statistics. Somehow, we die without being killed. The very veracity of our deaths is called into question . The extent of the civilian death toll in Gaza should not come as a surprise when Israel’s defense minister, Yoav Gallant, can speak unchecked of “ human animals .”

My story is one drop in the ocean of suffering faced by Palestinians, and compared to the immense and indescribable suffering of the people of Gaza, frankly trivial. As I wheeled myself down the smooth corridors of the hospital where I received care after the shooting, I thought of those in wheelchairs in Gaza, struggling to navigate the rubble-strewn streets as they fled their homes. I thought of the reports about a woman being shot dead as she held her grandson’s hand while he clutched a white flag. I thought of a 17-year-old shot in the back by settlers in the West Bank . The pain of knowing their fates is fathomless, and it has yet to cease.

I think back to the circumstances in which I was shot with my two friends, Kinnan Abdalhamid and Tahseen Aliahmad, and imagine them instead in the context of the West Bank. A Hisham, Kinnan and Tahseen shot there could have been left to die. Our names would circulate for a day or two in pro-Palestinian circles, but in the end, we would be commemorated only on a poster in the streets of Ramallah, our faces eventually worn down with time like the countless others I’ve walked past in the streets of my home. If that scenario does not stir the same feelings in you as my shooting, if your first instinct when a Palestinian is shot, maimed or left handicapped is to find excuses, then I do not want your support.

When I was still in the hospital, my family and I were visited by a friend who had just recently made it out of Gaza. He recounted how he saw the beginning of the Israeli bombing from his balcony, and soon after showered and left his house with a prepacked bag. He told me of tents, of hunger, of explosions, but there is one thing that really stood out for me as he recounted his ordeal.

He explained how the only way for him to survive in Gaza was to accept that he had already died. Only after he had come to terms with the realization that his life as he knew it was over could he enjoy a puff of a cigarette and a sip of coffee in the morning. This acceptance is the goal of the Israeli dehumanization complex. To be Palestinian today is to accept this fate.

I have been back on campus since February, and the adjustment has been tough. The man who is accused of shooting me has pleaded not guilty to three counts of attempted second-degree murder. But my mind is elsewhere. Every morning when I wake up, I check for one number . It has exceeded 35,000. It’s difficult for me to come to terms with the reality of so much loss.

In class, between Mesopotamian myths and commutative algebra, a few thoughts play on a loop in my mind: How can we come back from so much grief? How could we let this happen? What are we supposed to make of the world when Palestinian deaths are excused by talking points, repeated again and again on the news? I yearn to return to my home, to my olive trees, my cats and my family.

I realize, though, that when I cross the King Hussein Bridge from Jordan into the West Bank, I will return to my designation as a potential terrorist. I cease to be a junior at Brown University, a student of archaeology and mathematics, a San Francisco Giants fan, a Balkan history nerd. My entire identity will be reduced to my capacity for violence, not as a human being, but as a Palestinian.

Hisham Awartani is a Palestinian American student at Brown University studying mathematics and archaeology. He grew up in Ramallah, West Bank.
