Is World Peace Possible? By M Wajahat Sultan

The eternal peace of the World in the 21st Century could be possible due to fading war-mongering ideologies and the introduction of Cyber-Warfare technology which had changed the paradigm of military wars and now the world is more conscious to wage a war.

Concept of violence, wars, and crimes are not inherited in human nature but are executed due to other goals.

Domination, Sadism, and Ideology in history played a role to perpetuate wars and violence in the world.

World peace is possible if humans understand the moral sense and reason over sadism and ideology.

Philosopher Peter Singer in his book “The Expanding Circle” argues that a sense of empathy and an ability to rationalize the dependence on one’s own life through others have extended in the last centuries which caused the decline in violence and wars.

The rising value of human life and circle of empathetic instincts can control the impetus of war in the 21st Century.

The computational theory of mind in the arena of neurological evolution also asserts that the perception of human beings about war and violence has shifted in the last 200 years which is a clear manifestation that war is not more a profitable agency for humans to rationalize their interests.

The reasons for war have changed from rivalry to competition. The neoliberal economy has created a sense of competition and cooperation to advance the global society in the era of Globalization.

The connected ambitions and interdependence establish the reasons to ensure peace and abolish the grounds for envy.

Russia has invaded Ukraine with hegemonic motives. USA and EU refused to send their troops directly into the Ukrainian favor which is obvious that the inevitability of War among Great Powers or War among multiple states has reduced.

Now the war is equal to organized crime. The traditional concept of War has declined and the eventual process of peace for global progress is paved in the 21st Century.

The irenic forces like enlightened progressive values of liberty and life are more revered than the conflicts and clashes.

Democracy established peace because the democratic leaders don’t make moves because of their “malignant narcissism” and the general will prevails.

The people are rational enough to comprehend the war consequences so they never favor the war in general.

The establishment of democratic governance is the check over the War favoring sentiments.

Apart from democracy, progressive values like mutual growth and global reciprocity also curtailed the sentiments of war in global arenas.

Yuval Noah Hariri argued that Cyber-Warfare technology in the 21st Century hampered the chances of Wars.

In the past, if London planned to capture New Delhi there was no threat to London for their people.

In the 21st Century if Israel initiates an attack on Iran the cyber retaliation of Iran can destroy Tel Aviv with the same intensity.

So cyber-warfare gadgets have minimized the threats of mutual wars for the collective interests of the states.

The rising environmental deterioration has created social discontent in various states, the matrix of misinformation has also created malfunctioning rhetoric’s among states and both former and latter have the potential to wage a global war again.

The rising climatic destruction can create a social deficit of trust among nations.

The use of social ventures against the harmony and sovereignty of states can cause a potent threat to new wars.

It is now on the global community to continue the continuum of established peace or initiate a new variant of war sentiments.

World Peace is possible with sincere effort from the global community to prefer humanitarian values over materialistic aspects.

The rising global inequalities shift of powers, and natural calamities are ready to plague world peace but humans are rational to decide again that it is peace and advancement that can embark the world on the journey of progress.

Human nature can be tamed through positive enforcement and democratic processes.

The liberal order needs to reconsider its roots and revitalize the structure of economic struggle in an ethical way to combat all the variants that can disturb the harmony of the world.

The world is again at the stage of evolution and decisive struggle to ensure world peace. We should prefer the interests of humankind rather than the interests of our nations and ethnicities for the overall and generalized goodwill of mankind and humanity.

World peace is possible if we discount human stupidity with forces of pacifism and progressive liberal order.

Is World Peace Possible?

Peace may be closer than we think..

Posted December 24, 2020 | Reviewed by Gary Drevitch

Robert Atkinson

Peace is a timeless and universal vision belonging to all, and it has forever been a multidisciplinary interest. The great ideals and perennial values of the world’s religions serve not only as beacons to better times, when all will live together in harmony and good will, but they are also designed, when put into practice and lived by, to represent a promise of what humanity is capable of, maybe even created for.

The Golden Rule can be seen as a foundation for a principle of justice that, when extended from the individual to the global level, becomes the basis for the fulfillment of the promise of peace on earth.

At the end of the 18th century, philosopher Immanuel Kant proposed in his essay Perpetual Peace a program to be implemented by governments that would abolish standing armies, eliminate interference of one state with another, and prevent national funds from being used to create friction with other nations. These steps and more, including the rights of all people, as citizens of the world, to experience universal hospitality, would be the foundation on which to build a lasting peace. This essay influenced not only European thought and political practice but was also well represented in the formation of the United Nations.

The founder of experimental psychology, Wilhelm Wundt, who also founded folk psychology— what became cultural psychology—wrote in 1912 of how the psychological and cultural development of humanity has evolved through stages toward a consciousness of “mankind as a unity,” when national affiliations give way to world-wide humanistic concerns. This evolutionary stage can now be seen as where we are headed, and as a prerequisite to world peace.

World unity seems to be where the evolutionary flow is heading, favoring cooperation over competition . But is world peace a promise to be fulfilled, or one that will never be kept? Is it possible that world peace is an inevitable outcome of our collective evolution?

As Rev. Michael Bernard Beckwith makes clear in his chapter “Is World Peace Possible?” in Our Moment of Choice: Evolutionary Visions and Hope for the Future , “peace isn’t something that only a group of world leaders will achieve, no matter how good their intentions. When peace erupts on Earth, it will come from individuals everywhere who have entered a new state of consciousness.”

He believes peace is inherent in our species, that it is now exerting itself on an increasingly global scale, and that it is the people who know they are facing a daunting task and work at it anyway who are making a significant difference. This is the way it has always been. When faced with a problem that seems intractable, people find a way around it instead of resigning themselves to it. People have always brought about change in this way, whether it was fighting the challenges of seemingly incurable diseases or achieving civil rights. Those who have won against great odds have pioneered paradigm shifts. This is what makes global peace possible.

It helps a great deal to know what peace really means. It’s not just an absence of conflict. Beckwith says, “peace is the dynamic of harmonizing good. It is a quality within us.” This understanding opens up so many options, not only to be a peace-builder, but also to live peace from within in everything one does in life. As an inner quality, peace becomes something others can pick up on, notice on an energy level, and emulate in their own actions. This way, peace becomes contagious.

As Beckwith puts it, being able to really see “something from another’s point of view leads to the birth of compassion. With compassion, there is understanding; from understanding comes dialogue. When dialogue emerges, then a way out of no way emerges. With empathy, compassion, understanding, and dialogue, people can see a solution that wasn’t there before; a shift in consciousness happens to enable a new insight.”

War is part of our dysfunction; it’s not a reflection of who we are in our highest form. There are many encouraging signs of a new paradigm emerging, of green markets, solar markets, holistic medicine markets, and more, leading a transformation toward a peaceful world.

As Beckwith reminds us, “peace is in the journey, with every step we take. We carry it with us, and its impact is felt on a much wider scale. We all have to find our own neighborhood, in our own community, where we’re willing to share our gift. Many people don’t realize that small groups of people around the world doing things with compassion have an impact on the mental and emotional atmosphere of the entire world. By having peace within, we build peace all around us.”

The promise of world peace has been there for millennia; it is up to us—now—to bring it into reality.

Is World Peace Possible?

“Genuine “world peace”–meaning effective consensus regarding shared sacrifices as well as voluntary cooperation–is theoretically possible.

But “world peace” imposed by a dominant power assisted by a few partners is unlikely because global power is becoming increasingly diversified and contentious.

Worldwide peace is most likely only some decades from now, when threats to humanity’s existence generated by global warming, pollution, etc., become an imminent threat to all.

In brief, only world peace driven by a recognition of the threat to everyone’s survival is the most likely source of salvation for a shortsighted humanity currently not able to see and think beyond the immediate.

“World peace is possible if all of us think it is possible.

It’s not easy to list all of the things John and I, jointly and separately, did hopefully to make a better world for all of us. However, now, so many people are activists, working seriously day and night to make world peace happen. We are very, very close since we know that there is no recourse. We are about to conquer all prejudices–racism, sexism and ageism. We are now getting the taste of working as activists, and how exciting that is. I think we are on the right track. Don’t you? I love you with all my heart!

ARTIST AND ACTIVIST

“When violence occurs, it is usually because of people’s incentives, which depend on their beliefs.

Extremist echo chambers, and their social networks, are serious threats. If leaders and citizens think that enemies are everywhere, or that their best chance to get ahead (or to heaven) is to attack, then peace will be a pipe dream.

But incentives and beliefs can change in a hurry. Democracies do not generally go to war against each other: their leaders have strong incentives to maintain the peace, and information flows freely, breaking down echo chambers and enabling people to find conflict-free paths. As self-government and freedom of speech spread, world peace becomes more feasible.

Team Leader, Prevention of Violent Extremism, UNDP's Global Focal Point on MHPSS; Religion; and Hate Speech

COVID-19 has shifted our world. Over the last six months, no matter where we live, our lives, assumptions, and relationships have changed. Now, more than ever, we have witnessed people from all backgrounds and all ages rise to assist each other

While communities have formed networks of mutual support, many of the institutions mandated to support them have failed to fully harness and amplify the wealth of capacities and support structures that already exist. In international development in particular, a key blind spot that limits the effectiveness of our work exists in the rhetoric we use to understand the communities we work with.

UNDP, along with many other partners, continues to advance new approaches to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, but our continued use of terminology that fails to fully embrace the power of people impedes the transformative potential of our work. This can also lead to inadequate policy and programming, or to insufficient – or inappropriate – action. One of the most prominent examples of this is our tendency to target support to individuals and communities facing poverty, conflict, or other sources of instability by identifying them as ‘vulnerable’ people.

For example, the problem with categorizing  women as vulnerable group project women’s passivity and helplessness, denying them agency and power in the processes of change. A radical reaction to portraying women as vulnerable in recent years has been an over glorification of women’s role as fighters in support of violent extremist groups, hindering their capacity and role as peacebuilders.

Words matter. They shape mindsets, and mindsets shapes approaches and outcomes. There is an important distinction between a vulnerable person and a person living in a vulnerable circumstance. When we define people by their circumstances, we fail to engage with them as multidimensional beings. It’s time for UNDP to move from using ‘vulnerability’ as a means of defining the people it supports, to considering all people as protagonists for change.

This might allow us  to meet people’s aspirations  and assist us in assessment and conceptualization of where inequality stems from and who has a role in combating it. By moving away from a deprivation perspective, which leads to divisive mentalities about the capacity of particular groups of people, we are better positioned to recognize the reality of humanity’s common journey in building a peaceful world, and the role of each individual as a protagonist in it. We can start this journey by changing the words we use and therefore the whole narrative from vulnerability to empowerment and constructive resilience.

Whether this reconceptualization of what unites us to be reached only after a global crisis such as this pandemic has revealed the cost of humanity’s stubborn clinging to old patterns of behaviour, or is to be reached through consultation and dialogue, is the choice before all.

We can choose to graduate from the idea of labeling women, youth, racial, religious and ethnic minorities as ‘vulnerable groups in the discussions that guide our decision-making. We can embark on a journey with greater clarity of vision and determination to question and reflect on how our policy and programming promote the nobility of them and draw on their experience.

To accept that the individual, the community, and the institutions of society are the protagonists of civilization building, and to act accordingly, opens up great possibilities for human happiness and allows for the creation of environments in which the true powers of the human spirit can be released.

Several opportunities to enhance our work with peacebuilders, activists, and other populations in bringing about sustainable change and to ensure we recognize and articulate with greater clarity their latent capacity may include the following:

  • To  stand with women peacebuilders to ensure they are recognized for their work and courage, have full inclusion and representation in local and global peace and recovery processes and are protected against threats and are receiving the resources  to carry out their work. This year will mark the 20th anniversary of WPS, and UNDP is proud to join the International Civil Society Action Network(ICAN) and the Women’s Alliance for Security Leadership (WASL) as they launch the global #shebuildspeace call to action and campaign building on our partnership on Invisible Women .
  • To recognize the powers endowed in people of faith, especially women of faith, at all levels. Women of faith are actively engaging in the local peace process and they are advocating against hate speech, initiatives addressing issues connected to the environment, like climate. UNDP and UN Women report on Conflicting Identities: The Nexus between Masculinities, Femininities and Violent Extremism in Asia recommend Programming take a whole-of-family and hole-of-community approach when designing interventions.
  • To recognize the essentiality of community-based peacebuilding as parallel or pre-requisite to high-level negotiations. The effects of COVID-19 proved that local trust, access and resilience is essential part of social cohesion .
  • To include and appreciate young climate change advocates , environmental defenders and environmental journalists who have recognized that creation is an organic whole and they are promoting systems required to respect the earth and to organize and fully utilize its raw materials. Their inclusion in essential in programs that promote just, peaceful and inclusive societies.
  • To acknowledge the role of storytellers who provoke conversations, initiate reflections and ; and work of volunteer online defenders  and work of volunteer online defenders from across the globe combating trolls who spread hate speech.
  • To show gratitude to the unique contribution of Indigenous peoples to our planet and our common future.
  • To recognize persons with disabilities as having significant experience and innovative approaches to navigating barriers in their daily lives.
  • To learn how people make decisions and act on them, how they think about, influence, and relate to one another, and how they develop beliefs and attitudes. We are working with young people to apply behavioral insights to address violent extremism in countries such as Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

The innovation and resilience shown by communities amidst the pandemic have underscored the need for more expansive understandings of human relationships, and to place more emphasis on identifying the latent capacities and desires of those we hope to serve. This means believing in people and their desires to be sources of peace and justice. This means opening our eyes to the extent of people’s capacity so that we can see more peacebuilders and changemakers in more places. This means embracing the oneness of humankind and human nobility as a foundation for how we develop our policies and programmes.

Peace Is More Than War’s Absence, and New Research Explains How to Build It

A new project measures ways to promote positive social relations among groups

Today, the misery of war is all too striking in places such as Syria, Yemen, Tigray, Myanmar and Ukraine. It can come as a surprise to learn that there are scores of sustainably peaceful societies around the world, ranging from indigenous people in the Xingu River Basin in Brazil to countries in the European Union. Learning from these societies, and identifying key drivers of harmony, is a vital process that can help promote world peace.

Unfortunately, our current ability to find these peaceful mechanisms is woefully inadequate. The Global Peace Index (GPI) and its complement the Positive Peace Index (PPI) rank 163 nations annually and are currently the leading measures of peacefulness. The GPI, launched in 2007 by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), was designed to measure negative peace , or the absence of violence, destructive conflict, and war. But peace is more than not fighting. The PPI, launched in 2009, was supposed to recognize this and track positive peace , or the promotion of peacefulness through positive interactions like civility, cooperation and care.

Yet the PPI still has many serious drawbacks. To begin with, it continues to emphasize negative peace, despite its name. The components of the PPI were selected and are weighted based on existing national indicators that showed the “strongest correlation with the GPI,” suggesting they are in effect mostly an extension of the GPI. For example, the PPI currently includes measures of factors such as group grievances, dissemination of false information, hostility to foreigners, and bribes.

The index also lacks an empirical understanding of positive peace. The PPI report claims that it focuses on “positive aspects that create the conditions for a society to flourish.” However, there is little indication of how these aspects were derived (other than their relationships with the GPI). For example, access to the internet is currently a heavily weighted indicator in the PPI. But peace existed long before the internet, so is the number of people who can go online really a valid measure of harmony?

The PPI has a strong probusiness bias, too. Its 2021 report posits that positive peace “is a cross-cutting facilitator of progress, making it easier for businesses to sell.” A prior analysis of the PPI found that almost half the indicators were directly related to the idea of a “Peace Industry,” with less of a focus on factors found to be central to positive peace such as gender inclusiveness, equity and harmony between identity groups.

A big problem is that the index is limited to a top-down, national-level approach. The PPI’s reliance on national-level metrics masks critical differences in community-level peacefulness within nations, and these provide a much more nuanced picture of societal peace . Aggregating peace data at the national level, such as focusing on overall levels of inequality rather than on disparities along specific group divides, can hide negative repercussions of the status quo for minority communities.

To fix these deficiencies, we and our colleagues have been developing an alternative approach under the umbrella of the Sustaining Peace Project . Our effort has various components , and these can provide a way to solve the problems in the current indices. Here are some of the elements:

Evidence-based factors that measure positive and negative peace. The peace project began with a comprehensive review of the empirical studies on peaceful societies, which resulted in identifying 72 variables associated with sustaining peace. Next, we conducted an analysis of ethnographic and case study data comparing “peace systems,” or clusters of societies that maintain peace with one another, with nonpeace systems. This allowed us to identify and measure a set of eight core drivers of peace. These include the prevalence of an overarching social identity among neighboring groups and societies; their interconnections such as through trade or intermarriage; the degree to which they are interdependent upon one another in terms of ecological, economic or security concerns; the extent to which their norms and core values support peace or war; the role that rituals, symbols and ceremonies play in either uniting or dividing societies; the degree to which superordinate institutions exist that span neighboring communities; whether intergroup mechanisms for conflict management and resolution exist; and the presence of political leadership for peace versus war.

A core theory of sustaining peace . We have also worked with a broad group of peace, conflict and sustainability scholars to conceptualize how these many variables operate as a complex system by mapping their relationships in a causal loop diagram and then mathematically modeling their core dynamics This has allowed us to gain a comprehensive understanding of how different constellations of factors can combine to affect the probabilities of sustaining peace.

Bottom-up and top-down assessments . Currently, the Sustaining Peace Project is applying techniques such as natural language processing and machine learning to study markers of peace and conflict speech in the news media. Our preliminary research suggests that linguistic features may be able to distinguish between more and less peaceful societies. These methods offer the potential for new metrics that can be used for more granular analyses than national surveys.

We have also been working with local researchers from peaceful societies to conduct interviews and focus groups to better understand the in situ dynamics they believe contribute to sustaining peace in their communities. For example in Mauritius , a highly multiethnic society that is today one of the most peaceful nations in Africa, we learned of the particular importance of factors like formally addressing legacies of slavery and indentured servitude, taboos against proselytizing outsiders about one’s religion, and conscious efforts by journalists to avoid divisive and inflammatory language in their reporting.

Today, global indices drive funding and program decisions that impact countless lives, making it critical to accurately measure what contributes to socially just, safe and thriving societies. These indices are widely reported in news outlets around the globe, and heads of state often reference them for their own purposes. For example, in 2017 , Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez, though he and his country were mired in corruption allegations, referenced his country’s positive increase on the GPI by stating, “Receiving such high praise from an institute that once named this country the most violent in the world is extremely significant.” Although a 2019 report on funding for peace-related projects shows an encouraging shift towards supporting positive peace and building resilient societies, many of these projects are really more about preventing harm, such as grants for bolstering national security and enhancing the rule of law.

The Sustaining Peace Project, in contrast, includes metrics for both positive and negative peace, is enhanced by local community expertise, and is conceptually coherent and based on empirical findings. It encourages policy makers and researchers to refocus attention and resources on initiatives that actually promote harmony, social health and positive reciprocity between groups. It moves away from indices that rank entire countries and instead focuses on identifying factors that, through their interaction, bolster or reduce the likelihood of sustaining peace. It is a holistic perspective.

Tracking peacefulness across the globe is a highly challenging endeavor. But there is great potential in cooperation between peaceful communities, researchers and policy makers to produce better methods and metrics. Measuring peace is simply too important to get only half-right.

Extensive English Essay and Precis Course for CSS & PMS Aspirants

Cooperation is indispensable for humanity’s peace, prosperity, and development in this globalized world. A cooperative community grows exponentially when it knits to uplift all regional social indicators. A glaring example of achieving prosperity through coordination is European Union. Europe, which has once been a food deficit and poverty-driven region, has successfully turned itself into the world’s most developed region through collective efforts. The example of Europe is enough to understand the fact that the countries cannot fight global terrorism, climate change, global warming and human trafficking by themselves if they do not come together collectively. Ostensibly and clearly, the world must come on the same page – through cooperation, not competition – to attain Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for its bright, peaceful, and prosperous future. However, on the other hand, competition always results only in chaos and calamity, and world wars have been evident examples. Therefore, the world must understand the significance of collaboration, and the global community must work hand in hand to make the earth livable. This essay eludes why cooperation, not competition, is necessary for a peaceful and prosperous world.

Cooperation Not Competition Leads the World Towards Peace and Prosperity Essay Cooperation, Not Competition, Can Lead the World Towards Peace and Prosperity Essay How Does Cooperation, Not Competition, Lead the World Towards Peace and Prosperity? Click on any to start reading the essay

Competition robs the world of a peaceful and prosperous future; however, cooperation among the states would lead the world toward a bright and thriving future. Cooperation among societies is pivotal for better understanding each other and collectively mitigating problems. As it can also be understood by an old saying,  “United we stand, divided we fall.”  Furthermore, collaboration among personnel is also essential as it leads towards the exchange of ideas and helps innovation. Moreover, through coordination, the world can face any calamity and counter it collectively; therefore, cooperation has much significance for developing a prosperous society.

It is pertinent to elude how cooperation is necessary for peace and prosperity of the world. To begin with, the biggest challenge the planet faces today is growing social evils, such as poverty, unemployment, and hunger. Millions of people around the globe are the victims of these social evils, and individual efforts to curb them are not proving fruitful. Therefore, to make the world peaceful and prosperous, cooperation among the states worldwide is essential to eliminate these evils.  For instance, countries of Southeast Asia, under the flag of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, have started free trade and technology exchange, resulting in a 20% decrease in poverty in the last decade.  Moreover, the per capita income of the people increased, and the unemployment ratio decreased drastically. Hence, it is evident that countries all around the globe must coordinate to eliminate these evils.

Additionally, terrorism- a dagger in the heart of world peace- is an ever-growing menace that disrupts society’s social peace. Terrorism is not an issue of a single country or a region, but the whole planet is a victim of this heinous evil.  According to Global Terrorism Index, terrorist activities account for 5526 losses of lives in 2021.  This violence not only disrupts the social peace of society but also engraves everlasting psychological marks in people’s minds. Terrorism cannot be tackled alone by a single nation, but global efforts and communication are required to end this threat. Therefore, global collaboration in the exchange of information, technology, and expert personnel is a must to curtail terrorism.

Furthermore, another issue that needs global cooperation is climate change-average rise in the Earth’s temperature due to human activities- it is not due to a single country but mostly due to developed countries, such as America and China. Climate change has proven to be a bane to the social and economic prosperity of the world, causing several large-scale calamities. It has affected all areas of life: agriculture, infrastructure, fresh, land water.  For instance, due to changes in weather patterns, recent flooding in Pakistan has caused significant loss of lives and economic losses.  Moreover, the western region of Iraq has been facing impacts of climate change in the form of dreadful droughts. Therefore, the need of the hour is to develop a mechanism of cooperation among the globe to mitigate the impacts of climate change for a peaceful and prosperous future of the world.

In addition to this, curtailment of evils like human and drug trafficking and smuggling of goods need collaborative effort. These evils are sore for the sustenance of peace in society. Inter and intra-state high-level and honest communication is required to curtail crimes like these.  According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), approximately 10-15 billion dollars of drugs enter America through the Mexico border, eventually leading to the corruption of youth in society.  Moreover, the eradication of human trafficking from Africa and the selling of human organs in the black market need global efforts. Therefore, cross-border cooperation is a must for the elimination of these evils.

Last but not least, global cooperation is a must to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations for a prosperous future in the world. In fact, if the states remain unable to work together, the dream to achieve these goals – no hunger, no poverty, education for all, and economic sustainability- would be elusive.  For this purpose, developed countries, such as America, France, and China, must work hand in hand with developing countries to address their issues and support them in every possible field.  As a result, the world can become a comforting home for every individual rather than some specific one.

On the one hand, cooperation makes the world a place worth living in, and on the other hand, competition has always led the world towards chaos. Countries around the globe are at daggers drawn owing to competition. They hate each other and do not want their rival to progress in any regard.  A glaring example in this regard is India and Pakistan.  Both countries loathe each other and can do anything to stop the other from progressing. Moreover, they are fighting the world’s most expensive war at Siachen just to overpower the other. Hence, competition has always been an obstacle to a peaceful and prosperous world.

In addition to this, economic tussles between superpowers have become a blight for underdeveloped countries. This is because they are facing the consequences of the war, which they were never part of.  For instance, Thailand and Vietnam have concurred loss of around $4 billion in exports to China due to the China-America trade war in 2019, reported by the Asian Development Bank.  Moreover, the trade war has also impacted many countries in Africa. Therefore, competition has always been a ladder leading to chaos and war.

In order to ensure peace in the world, global organizations, such as the United Nations, must mediate between warring countries, such as Pakistan and India, for a better and prosperous future for both countries. Moreover, the South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation organizations must play their role for the betterment of the region by increasing trade and cultural exchange opportunities between the member states. Hence, global and regional organizations can play a pivotal role in boosting cooperation among the states.

Moreover, developed countries, such as America, and France, can play a crucial role in the world’s prosperity by giving trade incentives to developing countries. In this regard, developed countries can offer tariff-free trade and set up manufacturing plants in developing countries to uplift their social indicators, making the world prosperous. Furthermore, World Trade Organization can play its role effectively by offering incentives to developing states. Therefore, by increasing economic cooperation between developed and developing countries, the social indicators of developing countries improve, and the world becomes prosperous.

Additionally, the world must cooperate with the United Nations Environment Program to mitigate the effects of global warming on the globe. Cooperation with the world’s largest greenhouse-releasing countries, such as America, China, and India, is required. Moreover, global campaigns in every country to minimize fossil fuel use are required. Mutual aid is essential in order to fight this global calamity. Therefore, cooperation is vital in the world to fight problems like global warming.

Last but not least, cooperation among countries can be boosted by boosting the role of anti-terrorist organizations, such Financial Action Task Force(FATF). Terrorists’ financial aid can be curbed with the help of FATF. For this purpose, communication among the world is necessary. Therefore, to deal with evils like terrorism, global cooperation has become essential. Hence, peace and prosperity can only achieve through the world’s cooperation.

Critically, competition always leads the world towards chaos and calamity. History has provided a lesson in the form of world wars that competition is a ladder leading to society’s crumbling and falling. However, cooperation builds a peaceful and prosperous foundation of society. In the wake of several challenges, the world faces cooperation among the globe has more significance than it ever had. World leaders must unite and develop a joint mechanism to deal with these issues efficiently. Therefore, to build a better future for future generations, the world must act now; otherwise, it would be useless to cry over spilt milk.

In a nutshell, sustainable peace and prosperity can only be achieved with cooperation. The world needs to join hands to alleviate people of poverty and eliminate hunger. Moreover, cooperation among the countries is crucial to deal with critical challenges. These challenges in the form of terrorism and climate change hinder world peace and prosperity. World leaders must cooperate in curbing these challenges and ensuring peace on Earth. Therefore, the need of the hour is to propagate cooperation among different states and build trust for a peaceful and prosperous future.

WORLD PEACE CANNOT BE ACHIEVED WITH AN OUTDATED UNITED NATIONS

October 19, 2017 CSS Special , October 2017 Leave a comment

By: Asadullah Khokhar

Since time immemorial, the humankind has been coveting for peace. All religions, philosophies and civilizations have praised the virtues of peace and have strove for its attainment. The abhorrent ugliness of war and violence compels the suffering humanity, from time to time, to reflect and make concerted efforts to restoring peace. So, harbouring this desire of a peaceful world, the international community created, out of its collective wisdom, the United Nations Organization in 1945 in the wake of the horrendous and excruciating experiences of World War II. In comparison to its predecessor i.e. the League of Nations, the United Nations (UN) proved more successful; given that it averted a large-scale war, helped in decolonizing the world and prevented violent conflicts in many parts of the world. Notwithstanding its feats, today the UN is beset with myriad structural and organizational flaws which hamstring the vital role it can play in achieving what has hitherto proved to be a pipedream: the global peace and security. Therefore, a holistic reform of the UN has become a pressing need of the time. Many nations around the world believe that peace and security will remain a distant dream without a renovated, restructured and fairly-represented United Nations that must be ready to respond, rapidly and proactively, to the perennial problems and newly-emerging challenges in the twenty-first century. Addressing a session of the UN General Assembly, former Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon echoed, “I have been pushing hard for the UN reform to make UN faster, more mobile, more effective, result-oriented, transparent and accountable.”

William Hazlitt’s words that “[t]hose who are at war with others are not at peace with themselves” underscore the importance of peace which actually is the raison d’être of the United Nations. The history, dyed red with the blood of the innocent millions, serves as a lesson for those with the penchant for waging wars. The significance of peace can also be gauged from the ruinous results of the dropping of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It was the collective failure of human experience. The worrisome and dreaded presence of deadly nuclear weapons in the world portends ill for the human race which, beyond doubt, is in imminent danger of complete annihilation. The present sabre rattling between North Korea and the United States, with veiled threats to attack each other with nukes, reminds one of the words of a Shakespearian character who said: “Mend your speech a little lest it should mar your fortunes.” Therefore, war is not the solution, peace is; and peace can be achieved only through understanding and dialogue. Hence, the UN is the only forum where nations can iron out their differences peacefully and amicably.

Therefore, in order to ascertain as to how far the United Nations has succeeded in its quest for the peaceful common destiny of humanity, it is important to have a glimpse of the successes the world body has achieved.

One of the greatest successes of the UN, so far, is the prevention of a large-scale war. Furthermore, it was the UN that accelerated the decolonization process post-World War II through certain mechanisms such as the Declaration on the Decolonization adopted on 14 December 1960. Likewise, the UN Peacekeeping Missions –the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan, for instance – deployed in most of the conflict-ridden regions of the world reflects the commitment and victory of the UN.

Contrarily, all these accomplishments of the United Nations stand dwarfed by its inaction on matters of peace, which, as discussed earlier, is still a pipedream. The UN triumphed in the areas that matter the least and failed in those that matter the most. In fact, it has fewer successes and more failures to its credit. Resultantly, “such failures defy the very reason the UN was created for,” says Charles W. Kegley in his famed treatise ‘The World Politics: Trends and Transformations’.

For instance, Kashmir dispute is yet to be resolved. The UN has miserably failed to bind the bellicose India to its Resolution 47 which called for holding a plebiscite in Kashmir. So, emboldened by the weakness of the world body, India still keeps cursing Kashmiri souls under the heavy heels of its barbarism and brute force. Another fiasco that stigmatizes the UN is the protracted problem of Palestine. Palestine bleeds under the naked eye of the UN which stands still like a silent spectator with its seventy-nine Resolutions having created no dent to the obduracy and arrogance of Israel. The growing trend of nuclearisation is no less than a mortal blow to the global peace and prestige of the UN. The instruments such as the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (1975), Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty (1972), Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) and the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) I and II, could not deter the states from going nuclear. Besides, the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962, Vietnam War of 1955-75, brutal and cold-blooded 1994 genocide of Tutsis at the hands of Hutu-led government in Rwanda, which led to the creation of the International Criminal Court in 2002 under the Rome Statute, speak volumes about the abject failures of the UN.

Even today, deafening silence of the UN on the Muslim blood being mercilessly spilled in Syria, Yemen, Myanmar, Iraq and Afghanistan, shows that it has become a toothless tiger. Moreover, the tensions brewing up in the South and East China seas and the monster of global terrorism are reflective of the poor performance of the UN, which has let the global community down. It is true that in order to deal with the menace of terrorism, the measures such as the ‘International Convention for the Suppression of the Terrorist Bombing (1997), International Convention for the Suppression of Financing of Terrorism (1999), the International Convention on Acts of Nuclear Terrorism (2005) and the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy’ have been carved out but to no avail.

So, the UN’s failures to keep such acts of aggression in check are numerous. However, one wonders what ails the UN? What causes its failure in delivering on the promises laid out in its Charter? In truism, there are a host of factors that have enfeebled the UN.

First and foremost of them is its outdated structure. In fact, the UN is ill-equipped and incapable of dealing vigorously with the geopolitical and economic realities of the twenty-first century. It serves only the interests of the privileged few. It lacks accountability, transparency, efficiency and innovation, which are traits much needed to respond to the tectonic shifts consistently taking place in a world heading toward multilateralism and global governance. It also cannot cater for the needs and aspirations of the most of the under-represented global community. The UN has become like an old first-generation computer unable to operate faster and smarter and gets hanged while burdened with a little more workload. So, the rust of ages has piled upon it. It needs a complete overhaul; otherwise, it would be useless to expect the twentieth-century machine to respond to the needs of the twenty-first.

Moreover, the second cause of the UN’s breakdown is an unrepresentative, corrupt-to-the-core but tremendously powerful Security Council. Functionally, it is the ‘principal crisis-management body that is empowered to impose binding obligations on the member states to maintain peace and security.’ However, today, it does not truly reflect the current geopolitical realities which have sparked off much debate over its restructuring. For example, there is deep-seated rivalry simmering inside the UN. Japan, Germany, India and Brazil aspire to become permanent members of the Security Council. They voice their demands through an interest group called “G-4”. Their demands are rivalled and opposed tooth and nail by another larger group called “Uniting for Consensus,” which advocates that non-permanent membership of the Security Council must be on regional basis. This group includes Italy, Pakistan, Mexico and Egypt to name a few. Worse, the SC remains bedevilled by the clash of interests among the Big Five – the United States, Britain, France, China and Russia, the 5 permanent members of the UNSC, also known as the Permanent Five, or P5. This naturally flops the UN. Furthermore, absence of authority and legal force with the UN also emboldens its members to openly flout International Law. And, due to its spinelessness, it cannot bring perpetrators to book.

Worse still is the scourge of veto power exercised by the five permanent Security Council members. The veto gives undue deference to the political interests of the P5; thereby leading to inaction and indecision; the UNSC often gets stuck in, especially amidst the critical crises such as Syria. This keeps the UN ship anchored in the fast flowing waters of change.

Likewise, the UN’s economic dependence solely on the West has made it their puppet. The US alone accounts for twenty-two percent of the UN’s budget. So, no wonder that the Western powers call the shots in the UN. This is evident from the UN peacekeeping missions sent to those areas where are involved the vital interests of its rich masters, while many war-torn regions bear no trace on the radar of the UN.

As a matter of fact, the challenges that await the UN in the twenty-first century might be daunting but not impossible to tackle. The first among them is achieving durable peace and security in the world. Besides, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), global terrorism, transnational organized crime, modern slavery, drug-trafficking, child abuse and smuggling of weapons and illegal goods also are at the heart of challenges which could hardly be tackled by a UN that is outmoded and ill-prepared. Thus, the UN needs to be revamped for the survival of human existence on this planet that is exposed to impending but unknown dangers in the age of science and technology and modernity. In the cogent words of Kofi Annan, “More than ever before in human history, we share a common destiny. We can master it only if we face it together. And that is why we have the UN.”

Besides democratizing itself, the UN needs to promote democracy in the world as well. Other ordeals for the UN to prevail over include the promotion of democratic values such as the dialogue among civilizations, tolerance, freedom of expression, inclusiveness, protection of human rights, religious and cultural diversity and a peaceful coexistence. The UN can achieve this once it is morphed into a modern weapon of cooperation and smart diplomacy.

True, such a response is hardly possible but some key reforms in certain areas of the UN’s structure are indispensable for the cultivation of world peace. At present, the reform of the UN is being vociferously advocated by the anxious global community. Pakistan is also a staunch supporter of the UN reforms. This is reflected from the address of the Prime Minister of Pakistan to the UN General Assembly on 30 September 2015 wherein he said, “We need a more democratic, transparent Security Council, not an expanded club of the privileged and powerful.” In fact, the world needs a new and innovative, simple but sophisticated UN.

In this regard, democratization of the UN General Assembly should be the top priority. As it is at this august forum that the will of the majority should manifest itself and control the conditions that shape the policies and decisions. Besides, the SC should fully and fairly be made representative in a manner that the grievances of all those concerned are comprehensively addressed.

In order to drag the belligerent and rogue nations into the dock of justice for their illegal acts and violations of international law, the International Court of Justice will have to be empowered and reinvigorated to make it a powerful judicial organ of the UN. Moreover, the UN’s financial dependence solely on the Western powers should be reduced and budget of the UN must be made a shared responsibility based on a transparent system of checks and balances. Furthermore, eradication of corruption from UN’s bureaucracy, transparency, efficiency, proactive—not reactive—approach toward resolving the disputes and maintenance of peace and security should be the foundations on which the sophisticated and efficient superstructure of the UN should be rebuilt.

World peace

World peace can be referred to as the state of people from all countries in the world being happy and living harmoniously with each other.

World peace creates one international community that can concentrate on greater issues that are affecting the planet like climate change.

When countries work together, they benefit their citizens since they can freely move from one country to another for employment, education or tourism.

Importance of world peace

  • World peace leads to  increased globalization . Globalization is the act where people from different countries are able to interact freely with each other in various aspects.
  • World peace also leads to the  promotion of tourism . With peace, people are freer to tour any country of their choice without fear of violence.
  • World peace also contributes to  cultural exchanges . People are able to interact freely with each other and they can learn different cultures from other people.
  • World peace also contributes to  more   developed economies . This is because people are able to carry out both domestic and foreign investments without fear of the risk of future violence.
  • World peace also contributes to the  unification of people to fight unfair vices.  People are able to speak with one voice to get rid of vices like racism, religious discrimination and gender inequality.
  • World peace also contributes to the  reduction of wars . Warring countries or internal nation conflicts can be reduced if world peace existed. War is the main cause of human suffering in the world.
  • With world peace, you are also assured of  increased freedom of people . People get more freedom whether they are from different religions, race or country. This promotes global cohesion.

How to achieve world peace

  • We can achieve world peace through having  international bodies  that will ensure that every nation upholds world peace. Such a body is United Nations and other world organizations that ensure every country has the responsibility of promoting peace.
  • We can also achieve world peace through  upholding democracy . The main cause of world violence is dictatorship. When countries have the freedom to vote, they are able to choose the right leaders who are peace friendly.
  • World peace is also achieved through  globalization . When globalization is encouraged, countries will uphold peace since they will avoid going into war with countries that have economic ties with them.
  • We achieve world peace when there is  equal representation of nations in international bodies.  This will ensure that no nation is oppressed and no nation is left behind. When some nations are not represented, it creates inequality which may stir violence.
  • World peace can also be achieved by  raising awareness  of the importance of world peace. Nations can create awareness to their citizens by teaching them on the benefits that they will get when they have peaceful coexistence with other nations.
  • World peace can also be achieved by  sharing the country’s wealth equally . This is by giving equal opportunities to all and not overtaxing the poor. This will reduce the cases of rebel movements.

World peace is very important in the growth and prosperity of the entire global community. This is because with world peace, we are able to have more social cohesion and interactions that are beneficial to everyone.

I. introduction.

World peace is a state in which there is no war or violence. All nations and people coexist in harmony. It is the absence of conflict, both on a global and regional scale, and the presence of stability, justice, and prosperity for all. The current state of the world is complex and multifaceted, and there are many challenges to achieving peace. Some of the most significant challenges include political instability and conflicts, economic inequality, ethnic and religious tension, the arms race and the threat of war, and many more.

1. Political and Economic Inequality

In many parts of the world, political and economic power is concentrated in the hands of a small elite. Political and economic inequality refers to the unequal distribution of political and economic power and resources within a society or between different societies. This type of inequality can lead to a number of challenges to world peace. Some of these challenges include social unrest, political instability, economic disparities, and lack of representation.

2. Ethnic and Religious Conflicts

Ethnic and religious tensions continue to be a major source of conflict in many parts of the world, with ongoing struggles between different groups over land, resources, and political power.

3. The Arms race and the Threat of war

Many countries continue to invest heavily in military capabilities, raising the risk of war and the potential for accidental conflicts.

4. Cyber warfare and the Emergence of New Technologies

As cyber-attacks become more prevalent and the use of technologies such as drones and artificial intelligence in warfare increases, the risk of cyber warfare and unintended conflict becomes higher.

5. Climate Change and its Impact on Global Conflicts

Climate change is expected to cause more natural disasters and displacement which could lead to conflicts over resources and territory.

6. Terrorism

The rise of terrorism, particularly from extremist groups, has led to increased violence and instability in many parts of the world, making it difficult to achieve peace.

7. Immigration and Refugee Crisis

The current refugee crisis and the subsequent rise of nationalist sentiments in some countries are threatening world peace and stability.

These are just a few examples of the many challenges to world peace that continue to affect the world today.

  • International cooperation and multilateralism : International cooperation and multilateralism can help to address global challenges such as poverty, climate change, and terrorism through collective action.
  • Conflict resolution and peacebuilding: Conflict resolution and peacebuilding can help to prevent and resolve conflicts, and promote stability and reconciliation between conflicting parties.
  • Economic development and poverty reduction: Economic development and poverty reduction can help to address the root causes of conflicts, such as economic inequality and lack of access to basic needs, and create the conditions for sustainable peace.
  • Human Rights protections: protecting and promoting human rights, through international treaties and laws, can help reduce conflicts by ensuring that all individuals are treated with dignity and equality.
  • Diplomacy and negotiations: Diplomacy and negotiations can help to resolve disputes peacefully, and prevent conflicts from escalating.
  • Address the underlying issues of migration and refugee crisis: Addressing the underlying issues such as poverty, political instability, and climate change, that force people to flee their homes could help to reduce the number of refugees and migrants and ease the tensions caused by the crisis.

It is important to note that peacebuilding is a complex and long-term process, and a comprehensive and holistic approach that addresses multiple aspects and causes of conflicts is needed.

V. Conclusion

In conclusion, world peace is an ideal state that has been sought after throughout history, but has yet to be fully achieved. The current state of the world is complex and multifaceted, and there are many challenges to achieving peace, including political and economic inequality, ethnic and religious conflicts, the arms race, and the threat of war, climate change, and terrorism.

Historically, there have been many attempts to achieve world peace, such as the League of Nations, the United Nations, treaties and international agreements, diplomacy and negotiation, and peacekeeping and peacebuilding operations, but despite these efforts, conflicts continue to occur.

However, there are possible solutions that can help to address these challenges, such as education and awareness-raising, international cooperation and multilateralism, conflict resolution and peacebuilding, economic development and poverty reduction, human rights protections, and diplomacy and negotiations.

It is important to note that peacebuilding is a continuous process that requires a comprehensive and holistic approach, addressing multiple aspects and causes of conflicts. Achieving world peace will require the collective effort of individuals, governments, and international organizations. It’s a challenging goal but one worth striving for, as it will create a better future for all.
