Now when the SBI PO Prelims exam is over, you must have geared up with your Mains preparation. SBI PO Mains conducts a descriptive test once the aspirants are done with their objective test. This test incorporates letter writing (formal & informal) and essay writing tests. Let’s have a look at some quick facts about these tests and then we will share some preparation tips. The tests will carry a total of 50 marks and it needs to be completed in 30 minutes. You need to type your answer on the keyboard as these tests will be online.

Tips on Letter Writing Test

The Letter Writing test checks how well a candidate is able to handle written communication with others. To start with, you should understand the difference between an informal and a formal letter.

Formal Letter: A formal letter is addressed to authorities, professionals etc. and it should be limited to the subject at hand. It can start with Respected, Sir etc. and should end with Yours Faithfully. 

Informal Letter: On the other hand, an informal letter can be addressed to anybody with whom you want to share any informal story. The tone is casual and you have comparatively more flexibility in driving the flow of the letter. It often starts with Hello, Dear etc. You may end the letter with Yours Sincerely, Yours affectionately etc. You must stick to the below format when writing a letter. Please note that all content should be left-aligned.

• Sender’s Address (Three lines maximum)
• <Space>
• Date (MMM DD, YYYY or DD MM YYYY)
• Name, Title, and Address of the Recipient (Three lines maximum)
• Subject (Not required in an informal letter)
• Closing (Thanking You/ Yours Faithfully/ Yours Sincerely)

Keep the word limit (if any) in mind. In any way, keep the letter short and to the point. While starting the body of the letter you must introduce yourself and the purpose of writing the letter. The conclusion of the body should have a polite reiteration of what action you want to be taken from the recipient’s side.

The essay writing test intends to assess how well an aspirant is able to structure his or her ideas on a given topic and write them on a computer. It needs imaginative as well as good writing skills. The aspirant also needs to have some basic idea of the issue on which he/she is asked to write an essay on. Providing some relevant & updated data can garner bonus points to him/her. Read the editorials of a couple of newspapers and try writing them in your own words on a computer. It will also help you in your general awareness preparation. Use a dictionary if you come across a difficult word and understand the context in which the word is used. This will increase your word power as well. In the exam, comply with all the instructions mentioned. Divide your essay into 3-4 paragraphs where the first paragraph should be the introduction and general idea of the topic. Next one/two paragraphs will have the body and the last paragraph will be the conclusion.

The descriptive writing test is a supreme part of many banking exams including IBPS PO Mains Exam 2021 which is scheduled to be held on 4th Feb 2021. In this section, there are only two questions of 25 marks each that are: letter and essay writing. This section can help the aspirants in stretching and increasing their overall marks. But what are the tips that the candidates must keep in mind while attempting essay and letter writing questions? In this article, we will be answering this question with some of the most important tips for the descriptive writing test of various banking mains Exams.

Essay and Letter Writing Tips for Bank Mains Exams

Let us first look at the tips that the candidates must follow while attempting the letter-writing question:

Letter Writing

The basic agenda for a letter-writing question is to judge a candidate how he/she conveys a message formally or informally to the addressed person. Letters are broadly classified into two types: formal and informal/personal. Both these letter types have their own set of formats which the candidate must follow while writing the letter.

Informal Letter

These letters are addressed to your near and dear ones like family members, relatives, friends, etc. Informal type of letter follows and Informal tone throughout. No professionalism is shown in the Informal type of letter. Let us now look at the format of an informal letter.

• The content of the letter should be left-aligned.
• Candidates must follow the format as per the question: formal/informal.
• For formal letters , words for salutation or greetings can be, respected sir/ma’am or sir/ma’am.
• For informal letters , words like dear or hello can be used Greetings.
• Make sure that the conclusion of the letter is written in a separate paragraph. Keep the entire letter clean and tidy .
• Conclude the letter with Your Faithfully/ Sincerely.
• Avoid Grammatical mistakes and follow the tone as per the question ( formal or informal).

Essay Writing

Essay writing can be a scoring question for banking aspirants. But to ensure scoring good marks it is important to follow some tips while writing an essay in banking Mains exams.

• Read the question carefully. Is very important to understand the question and each instruction that is given in the question before beginning an essay. Mostly there are some important key points that are mentioned in the question that the candidates have to include in their essay. If the candidates go lenient while reading a question they might miss important key features that they have to include in their essay.
• There will be two questions from essay writing that will be asked from which the candidate has to choose and attempt one. It is advised that the candidates must choose the topic which he/she is aware of and have ample knowledge about that topic.
• Make sure that every point makes thorough sense and follows the main concept/topic of the essay throughout.
• Avoid spelling or grammatical mistakes as it will leave a bad impression on the readers.
• Candidates must ensure that they connect the essay from top to bottom. The readers shouldn’t feel that the candidate has left some points unexplained. For that candidates must start each paragraph with a sentence that clearly connects it to the rest of the essay.
• Finish the essay with an interesting and thought-provoking comment that is relevant as well. This will convey to the readers that the candidate is open for discussion.

Note: For both letter and essay writing questions candidates must take care of time management. Limited time will be given for both these questions so the candidates are advised to divide the time accordingly.

Descriptive Test will be conducted immediately after completion of the Objective Test. Marks obtained in IBPS PO Mains & SBI PO Mains 2021 Exam including both Objective Test and Descriptive Test scores will be added to the marks obtained in the third phase, i.e., Group Exercise & Interview Round for preparing the final merit list in SBI PO and Interview Round for preparing the final merit list in IBPS PO.

I would like to express my views on the sad state of pollution of all sorts in Parkview colony. Kindly include it in the columns ‘Letter to the Editor’ of your esteemed Daily. Recently air, water and sound pollution in this colony has crossed all limits. The increase in the number of smoke – spewing vehicles has added misery to the life breathe in fresh air without contracting some respiratory disease. Equally distributing is the fact that mounds of garbage are seen all around. The piped water gets contaminated due to leakage at many places in the water supply line. The sound pollution has also become alarming. The loudspeakers blare kirtans, Bhajans and film music all the twenty – four hours. A peaceful sleep has become a dream only. I urge the authorities to enforce the regulations vigorously to check this proliferation of pollution. I am afraid, if nothing is done in this direction, some diseases are likely to erupt.

SBI PO Prelims Exam Pattern 2024

The SBI PO Prelims Exam will have 3 sections:

• Quantitative Aptitude

English Language

The following points are the highlights of the SBI PO Prelims Exam:

• There will be three sections.
• Category-wise merit list will be drawn based on the aggregate marks scored in the Preliminary Exam.
• There will be no sectional cut-off . However, there will be an overall cut-off.
• There will be a negative marking of 0.25 marks for every incorrect answer.

SBI PO Prelims Syllabus 2024

The preliminary examination of the SBI PO exam comprises Reasoning Ability, Quantitative Aptitude, and English Language. The complete details of the heading and sub-heading of the sections asked in the Preliminary Exam of the SBI PO exam are discussed below:

SBI PO Mains Exam Pattern 2024

Candidates meeting the required cut-off in SBI Prelims will be eligible to appear for the Mains Exam. There are changes in the Mains Section with an increase in the weightage of General Economy/ Banking Awareness and the duration of the test will be 3 hours.

The  Descriptive Test has a duration of 30 minutes with a score of 50 marks . This test is conducted to test the writing skills of candidates via Letter Writing and essay Writing.

The following points are the highlights of the SBI PO Mains Exam:

• All the questions will be objective.
• This main paper will have four sections for a total of 200 marks.
• The duration of the SBI PO Mains Exam will be 3 hours.
• The objective test will have separate timing for every section.
• There will be no sectional cut-off . There will be only an overall cut-off.
• There will be a penalty of 0.25 marks for every incorrect Multiple Choice Question.
• The Descriptive Paper of 50 marks is compulsory to attempt.

Note: The descriptive  paper of a candidate will be checked only if they qualify in the Objective test as per the qualifying marks decided by the Bank.

SBI PO Mains Syllabus 2024

The Mains Examination of the SBI PO exam comprises 4 sections:

• Data Analysis & Interpretation
• Reasoning & Computer Aptitude
• General/Economy/Banking Awareness
• The SBI PO Mains syllabus comprises a descriptive test as well. The descriptive test consists of two questions, one letter writing and one essay each of 25 marks making a total of 50 marks.
• Candidates need to score passing marks in the descriptive test as well to qualify for the SBI PO mains exam.

SBI PO Interview 2024

Psychometric Test- The Bank may conduct a Psychometric test for personality profiling, of those candidates who will be shortlisted for Phase III. The findings of the test may be placed before the Interview panel to have a thorough perspective on the candidates.

This is the final stage of selection for successful candidates who qualify for the first two phases of the SBI PO exam. The Group Discussion accounts for 20 marks while the Interview is for 30 marks.

• The aggregate marks of all the candidates clearing both the Objective Tests and Descriptive tests will be arranged in descending order in each category.
• The decided number of candidates in each category, as governed by the Bank will be called for Group Exercises and interviews.
• The qualifying marks in Group Discussion & Interview will be as decided by the Bank.

SBI PO 2024 Final Selection

The final score for the  SBI PO Exam  is calculated keeping the below points in mind:

• Marks secured in the Preliminary Exam (Phase-1) will not be considered for selection
• Candidates must qualify for Phase-2 and Phase-3 separately to be eligible
• Marks secured by the candidates in the SBI PO Mains Exam (out of 250 marks) are converted to out of 75 and marks secured in Group Exercises & Interview (out of 50 marks) are converted to out of 25. This makes the new total score (Mains + GD/PI) to be 100
• The aggregate score out of 100 is used for the final merit list for each category. Candidates with top merit rank in each category are finally selected.
