Personal Narrative Essay: My Relationship With God

How I picture God

To me, God is like the father I do not deserve. Of course I love my birth father, but in my mind, God has always represented my true father. He loves and supports me, sent His son to die for me, and despite my wrongs, has kept His word of eternal kindness and acceptance. God represents someone I could sit next to at a campfire and have the most personal discussion I have ever experienced in my life, someone I could count on to listen when I need Him the most. He represents the most personal form of friendship, love, and care I could ever imagine.

Physically, God strikes a different note; he is not perfectly gleaming, and the peak form of human. He is beyond that, he is so personable to us, that He takes the form of a Father, the perfect form of anything past a human. To me, He is similar to the appearance of Albus Dumbledore. He is wrinkled and experienced, but his sense of humor and swagger is untouchable. He is loyal to all who call him “Father” and wants to love us no matter our innermost pain and desires. He has a long silver beard and spectacles, and despite his friendly and comforting appearance, He displays immense power.

What God means to me

God means everything to me; He is my savior and my redeemer. Besides sending His own son to die for me, He has saved me in my own lifetime apart from the miracles of the Bible. For example, when I was 10, He saved my mom and dad in a car crash that resulted in another man’s death. The car was totaled and the windshield smashed in, yet my mom and dad received no injuries, cuts, bruises, or any other minor scrapes.

Again, when I was twelve or thirteen I attended a Blazers basketball game with my dad. After the game I begged my dad to take me to the store in the stadium to buy a jersey. I only had $15 which could buy me a sticker or something small. Along the way, A random guy bumped into me and handed me a stack of papers, he immediately kept walking by. I turned around to ask him what they were and he was gone. I was in a wide open hallway with no immediate exits so I was freaked out. I looked down at my papers and they were coupons for the store that added up to $60 credit in the Blazers shop. I realized this person was an angel.

To me, God is love. He is everlasting, evereaching, and the strongest form of love. God has chosen me and has only assisted me. I do not deserve His love or at the least His mercy, but He has proven where He stands and has not changed.

How I communicate with God

I have received many messages and proofs of God, but the fact that they all are acts of kindness rather than an act of proving His existence really sell the existence of His love for me. He could appear in the sky and shout at me of His proven existence, but He instead sends me gifts and reminders of His love.

I communicate with God through everything around me. The direct form of my communication with God is found in my prayer, praise, and worship towards Him. Besides these lines of connection, I find communication in how I act each day. Putting on a smile when I do chores, helping others in my everyday life, and being a friend to those in need are forms of communicating with God outside of verbal praise or prayer. This communication is there for me whenever I need it, because God wants to support me whenever I feel down. He wants a truly real relationship with us; He seeks a two-sided relationship where we can treat each other like the closest form of friends; He seeks a relationship where I am His son, and He is my father.
